The name of my school is St. Xavier School and it is located in the area of Electronic City, in Bengaluru. Our school was established by Mr. Collins and Mrs. Flavia Albuquerque in the year 2010. Our school is affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education and has classes from Lower Kindergarten to 12th. 

Our school campus houses classroom buildings and playgrounds. Our school building is white. All the students of our school have to go to the auditorium for our morning prayer assembly before our classes start for the day. All the students stand in straight lines and sing the prayer song in chorus. Some of the students are half asleep on most of the days, during the morning assembly. Their eyes seem to be closed for the latter part of the morning prayer and they sing the prayer in a sleepy voice. After the morning assembly, all the students go to their respective classrooms and wait for their teachers to come.

There are many classrooms on every floor of our school building and there is a long corridor just outside the classrooms. Some boys play in the corridor when no teacher is there in their classrooms. There is a big room in our school building, where our Principal sits and also there is a room where all our teachers sit. Some teachers are very friendly and loving while some teachers are strict. Most of the teachers ask for the previous day’s homework before starting the class. Few teachers give us homework only for the weekends. 

I study in section-A of class 2 and there are 36 students in our section. Our class teacher changes the sitting arrangement every week so that everyone can get a chance to sit in the front row. The desks and benches smell of fresh paints every year when the school reopens for the new session. Whenever there is no teacher in our class, we play tic-tac-toe on the desks with pencils. 

Our school has computer laboratories where we are taken by our computer teacher twice a week. We have to make groups of two or three before we get to type on a computer keyboard. Every week, there is a period for games, during which we can play games like cricket, football, etc. Some vendors sell potato chips, jellies, and toffees just outside our school premises. My friends and I love to have the jellies they sell.

There are huge playgrounds on our school premises and we all play over there during lunchtime. I have many friends at school and some of them are from other sections. We all play together during the lunch break. I love going to school every day, as I can learn a lot of new things in the class and I can play with my friends. Is this page helpful?

I am a pen. A fountain ink pen. Something so insignificant that you don’t waste even one minute of your life thinking about me. But here I am, telling you my story. The pen that has been used to write different tales of so many people has finally got a chance to inscribe his own. I remember the day I came into existence. It was quite a long time ago. I took birth in a place you humans call a factory. All of my parts were inserted one by one through the hands of factory workers.

I remember moving at a fast pace on a conveyor belt. The workmen were handling me with care, and I was growing in size as well as beauty with each additional touch. I have a matte black and steel grey body along with a golden nib. If there had been beauty pageants for pens, I think I would have been a strong contender for sure. After I and my fellow fountain ink pens were ready, we were put into a transparent case. We were then put into a cardboard box in a batch of 100 pens.

The travel was extremely long and tiring. We started out in the back of a truck and soon found ourselves flying in the mighty sky in an aeroplane. We were then unloaded into a truck again and finally reached our destination after around 10 hours. We were ordered by a shop owner in the city of Mumbai. His shop was in Bandra where I’m told that a lot of famous people live.

My friends and I were kept in a glass cupboard. The owner’s servant used to clean the cabinet and dust us daily. Customers were never allowed to touch us without the assistance of the shop owner. I often wondered why we fountain ink pens got so much attention and special treatment. Why weren’t we treated the same way as other ballpoint pens or gel pens? People would come to the shop and buy other pens.

Some would come and look at us but never take us home with them. I thought that maybe there was some major problem with me. Perhaps I wasn’t handy or convenient. Maybe I was not stylish looking after all. Feelings of self-pity and dejection started taking over my friends and me. But we soon learnt the truth. One fine morning, just like every other day, the owner’s servant was cleaning the cupboard and dusting one of my friends when suddenly the ink pen slipped from his hand and landed straight on the hard marble floor.

The nib of the pen was completely destroyed. I felt sad and unhappy, looking at the incident, but I knew that the servant did it by mistake. As soon as this happened, the shop owner rushed towards the servant and gave him a good scolding. He told him that the pen that he had broken was very costly and that he would not get his salary for three months. After hearing the shop owner’s words, I felt sad for the 14-year old, but my self-esteem had also risen back.

The reason why people were not purchasing me, and my friends was not because we had some or the other flaw, but because we were quite expensive. After that day, the servant was not allowed to come near us, and the shop owner himself did the dusting work. After a wait of more than a year, I was finally picked up by a well-known writer and was taken to his home. He put me with many other of his pens. It seemed like he had a collection.

During the day, I play many games with my cousins, and we complete our school holiday homework. In the evenings, we help our grandfather in the garden. My aunt is a good painter. Every year, she teaches drawing and painting to all of us kids. We also go to a nearby dance school to learn dancing.

After spending a few days with my grandparents and cousins, my parents take me on holiday. Every year, we visit different tourist places, and this year, we plan to go to Goa and spend a few days enjoying the sun, sand and the sea . We plan on exploring the lush waters while trying out some fun new water sports and activities. We also want to walk around old Goa, taking in the architecture and natural beauty and shop from street vendors. We usually return home a few days before the summer vacation ends. I use that tim e to complete my school work and prepare my books for the school reopening. I also spend time playing with my neighbourhood friends in the evening. It suggests that the writers of the world leave a greater influence on people than the soldiers; for the world recognises the name of several famous writers such as William Wordsworth, John Keats, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, Rabindranath Tagore, etc but very few will be able to recognise the names of great soldiers who won wars, battles, etc. For ages, pen has been creating wonders as written information gets spread as knowledge which is preserved with people for their lifetime. The proverb clearly indicates that the writers are more influential than the mighty fighters and the sword cannot build such impact which writers can.

Writing can unite people to stand against social or national evil. Mahatma Gandhi through his preaching and knowledge united the citizens; he didn’t fight but won the nation with his power of wisdom and will. A war may result into victory to one party and defeat to the other at the cost of several lives; but a book can enlighten the world without harming even a single person, without any bloodshed.

Pen is the weapon of writers, which they can use to create history. Pen is constructive, while sword is destructive. A pen has the capacity to write novels, poems, humorous, emotional stories, facts and figures related to Science, Maths, Geography, etc. One can find joy and peace by reading and gain knowledge for lifetime. Writings can induce various emotions such as love, kindness, hatred, enmity, sympathy etc. Writing is regarded with respect and writers are always considered as the strong pillars of society as they have the power to change the world through the magic of their writing. Even on national level, debates and discussions can solve various altercations amongst differing countries, but war can destroy the economical and physical strength of the countries. On personal level too, literature spreads knowledge but fighting induces hatred.

In the world of political war and unrest; we need more pens than swords. The fact is that men are more influenced and guided by ideas than by the fear of sword or physical forces. It is true, that the command of the sword is restrained to a particular time period but the influence of pen is immortal and universal. The writer must use this power with utmost care, for their writing can either make or break the image of huge personalities, because pen is mightier than sword.

National Public Data confirms massive data breach included Social Security numbers

National Public Data, which aggregates data to provide background checks, has confirmed it suffered a  massive data breach  involving Social Security numbers and other personal data on millions of Americans.

The Coral Springs, Florida, company posted on its website a notice this week that "there appears to a have been a data security incident that may have involved some of your personal information. The incident is believed to have involved a third-party bad actor that was trying to hack into data in late December 2023, with potential leaks of certain data in April 2024 and summer 2024."

News about the breach first came from a class action lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and first reported on by  Bloomberg Law . Stolen from National Public Data (NPD) were 2.9 billion records including names, addresses, Social Security numbers and relatives dating back at least three decades, according to law firm  Schubert, Jonckheer & Kolbe , which filed the suit.

NPD said the breached data included names, email addresses, phone numbers and mailing addresses, as well as Social Security numbers. The company said it is cooperating with investigators and has "implemented additional security measures in efforts to prevent the reoccurrence of such a breach and to protect our systems."

Cybersecurity firm Pentester said it got the data and created a tool you can use to see if your information is in the breach – it shows names, addresses, address histories, and Social Security numbers. You will find it at npd.pentester.com .

Because financial institutions use Social Security numbers on applications for loans and credit cards and on investments, having that information that information available to bad actors poses a serious risk, Pentester.com co-founder Richard Glaser said in an advisory on the company website.

He also suggested freezing credit reports. "Names, addresses and phone numbers might change, but your Social Security number doesn't," Glaser said.

NPD also advised consumers to "closely monitor your financial accounts and if you see any unauthorized activity, you should promptly contact your financial institution." Consumers might want to get a credit report and get a fraud alert on their credit file, the company said.

Consumers should do more than that and freeze their credit report, Odysseas Papadimitriou, CEO of personal finance site WalletHub, told USA TODAY. “Placing a fraud alert is not as effective as freezing your report," he said.

"A fraud alert is more of a heads up to lenders, which they can easily ignore. It doesn’t do much in practice," Papadimitriou said. "A freeze, on the other hand, stops fraud in its tracks by preventing identity thieves from opening accounts in your name.”

He and other security experts suggest consumers take that step because the personal data is likely in the hands of hackers.

The class action suit alleges it was cybercriminal group USDoD that accessed NPD's network and stole unencrypted personal information. Then the group posted a database it said had information on 2.9 billion people on the dark web on about April 8, 2024, seeking to sell it for $3.5 million.
