Information to include in your homework planner

If you want to improve your time management skills through a homework planner, make sure to use the planner wisely. Avoid any crisis and conflict by including this information:

  • Regular times for you to do your homework
  • The due dates of your homework assignments
  • The dates of your tests
  • Any special events you have to attend wherein you won’t have time for homework
  • The deadlines of signing up for standardized tests
  • The due dates for school-related fees
  • The dates of school holidays

Tips for creating your own homework planner

It can be quite tricky to keep track of all the due dates of your homework without using a homework planner, a student planner template or any other kinds of organizational strategy. If you plan to create your own homework planner printable template, here are some tips:

  • Think about the types of weekly homework planner sheets to include. If you want to remain organized, you must use different types of planning lists, one of which is the homework planner printable.
  • Select the type and color of the paper to use when you print out your student planner template. You may also want to think about the type of template to use to organize all the information you need for school. After choosing and downloading a template, either customize it according to your needs or use it as it is.
  • After printing out the sheets of your daily, monthly or weekly homework planner, arrange the sheets in the order you want them to appear in your binder or notebook. Think about how you plan to use the sheets of your planner to find the perfect arrangement.
  • Organizing the different sections of your template allows you to keep all of your similar sheets for planning in one place. This is what successful planners to and it’s what allows you to remain flexible as you deal with your daily tasks.
  • Create different sections for your homework planner. Mark these sections using sheets of colored paper, stick-on dividers or other types of dividers to make it easier for you to locate the different sections.
  • Design the front cover of your planner. Here, you can express yourself using your own ideas and creativity. You can either create a design on your computer or use craft supplies to come up with a lovely design. If you think it will motivate you more, come up with a design that makes you feel inspired.
  • Name the sections of your planner. You can use the different subjects in your school as the names of the sections, the months of the year, and more, depending on what you need.
  • After marking the sheets and sections clearly, bind the sheets together. The simplest way to do this is with a stapler. Then fold a strip of paper over the entire side of the bound sheets to give your planner a neat look. After this, you can start using your planner!

Using a notebook or binder for your homework planner

Apart from creating your homework planner from scratch, you can also use either a notebook or a binder. Here are some steps to guide you:

Standard notebook

  • Select a notebook to use. Although using a homework planner printable is very convenient, decorating a notebook and using it for your planner is an excellent way for you to express yourself.
  • Decorate the notebook by starting with the cover. Use paint, stickers, and other craft supplies to do this.
  • Divide the notebook into how many sections you need for your planner. Think about how many sections you need then think about how many pages of the notebook you need for each of the sections.
  • Label the sections either by hand or using printed labels. You can also decorate the label covers of the notebook as you may see fit.
  • Create a calendar for your planner or print out a calendar template and attach it to your notebook in some way. This makes it easier for you to keep track of dates and deadlines.
  • Create the daily, weekly or monthly planning sheets. You can organize your plans easily by dividing the sheets or pages into equal sections for you to write your notes . Then you can start using the notebook to plan your homework!
  • Select the binder to use for your homework planner. In your selection process, consider the size of the banner. If you need a lot of space for your planning, you may choose a bigger binder. However, a smaller one is a lot easier to carry around. Therefore, considering the size is very important.
  • Think about the planning method you’d like to use. You can have daily, weekly or monthly planning or to-do lists . Using a binder is a lot easier, especially in terms of adding new sections when you need them.
  • Print out the homework or student planner templates you need after downloading or designing them. You can either use the templates you’ve downloaded or customize them as needed.
  • Insert all of the planning sheets and dividers into your binder. As you insert these sheets, separate them using standard dividers to make it easier for you to find the different sections. Using dividers also makes it easier for you to label the different sections for better organization.
  • After this, you can start using your homework planner!

How to use your homework planner?

Sometimes it’s hard to think about how you can accomplish all of your homework when your teachers keep piling everything on as if there’s no tomorrow. But as a student, the only thing you can do is to deal with what you’re given. The best way to do this is to remain organized by using a homework planner.

Without the proper organization and time management skills, you might not be able to get the top grades you’re hoping for. Now that you know how to create a daily, monthly or weekly homework planner, here are some tips for using it:

  • Select the right type of planner When you’re thinking about the type of planner to use, take your time. Select one which can accommodate all of the information you need but which still fits into your bag. Also, stay away from the store-bought ones with zippers or locks which are a challenge to open.
  • Name your planner Small as this detail may be, it’s important to name your planner to remind you to keep using it. When you assign a name to an object, you’re also giving it a strong purpose in your life. Choose whatever name you want, make sure that it stands out!
  • Incorporate the planner into your daily routine Make sure to bring the planner along with you at all times, especially when you go to school. Also, make sure to check the information written inside at the start and at the end of each day.
  • Jot down the information ASAP As soon as your teachers assign you with homework, jot down the most important details right away. Make this a habit and it soon becomes automatic for you. Write down the assignment on your planner, the due date, and other relevant details.
  • Learn how to use backward planning Whenever you write down any due date in your planner, keep going back to that homework to remind yourself that the due date is fast approaching.
  • Color-coding systems work wonders Use colored dividers, stickers, papers, highlighters, and more to organize your planner. This makes it easier for you to understand and identify the information written on your planner.
  • Make sure to include everything in your homework planner You must write down all the possible information in your planner, even the information about events, holidays, and other times which might take you away from doing your homework. If you don’t include this information, you can’t manage your time effectively.
  • Use tabs and flags Using tabs and flags makes it easier for you to indicate due dates, finished homework, end of terms, and more. These serve as an excellent visual tool which constantly reminds you of what you need to accomplish.
  • Keep the old pages and sheets in a separate file Since you’ll input everything in your planner, this means that each of the sheets contains important information. Therefore, you must keep the old pages in a separate file in case you need to use them as for reference later on.
  • Congratulate yourself for creating an organizational system After creating your homework planner and following all of these tips, congratulate yourself for creating your own organizational system. As long as you stick with the planning, doing your homework becomes a lot easier.

Printable Homework Planners to Help Students Get Organized

This post may contain affiliate links. Please read my disclosure for more info.

free printable homework planner

If you’re a parent, you know how incredibly overwhelming it can be for students to stay on top of studying and all other homework assignments.

Especially when they’re juggling multiple classes.

Due dates can pile up quickly if they aren’t staying organized and managing their time wisely.

However, there is a tool that can be quite helpful – A printable homework planner! You’ll find a few different styles below.

Weekly homework planners

These free printables will help students plan and track all their assignments for each day of the week.

They can write down the class, a description of the homework assignment, and when it’s due. Once it’s completed it, check “done” and move on to the next!

I recommend printing a few copies at a time. Encourage your middle schooler or high schooler to keep one in their binder.

free printable assignment tracker

Monthly homework calendars

In addition to weekly planners , older students may benefit from a blank homework calendar as well.

It’s nice to have a bird’s-eye view of each month.

Some of these templates have extra lines below the calendar for writing down reminders and other misc. notes.

homework calendar printable

Monthly assignment and exam trackers

Some students may prefer a simple running list of what’s due each month.

With these trackers, they can write down the class, jot down a quick description of what’s due (whether it’s a basic assignment, project, or exam), and the due date.

And, of course, once the assignment is finished, they can mark done.

I often get asked what paper I recommend. For regular copy paper this 5 ream case of paper is one of the better deals. For cardstock I really like this card stock paper on amazon . It is much cheaper than I have found in stores and has a good thickness for most projects without being so thick that it jams the printer.

College Student Planner

Free digital or printable college student planner to get you organized both at school and after school and to help you study.

student planner

I graduated years ago and yet I still have nightmares that I didn’t prepare for an exam or I have an assignment to submit that isn’t ready. College is stressful with so many commitments, deadlines, things to remember, and on top of all of that you most probably want a social life. If you are not organized, things will fall through the cracks. Assignments won’t be ready on time and you will find yourself cramming for exams with not enough time to finish the material. The only way to stay on top of homework, assignments, tests, and other commitments is by planning meticulously and staying organized. It will save you time and headaches and keep you calm so you can enjoy what should be a fun and exciting period of your life that you will look back on for years to come.

One of the reasons that I did well in law school was that I always used planners to get and stay organized. I used those same planners when I did my MBA years later and they proved helpful yet again.

I am happy to share my college student planner with you and I hope that it can help you as much as it helped me. There are different versions for each page so you can mix and match planner pages to create the perfect college planner for your needs. This is a 12-month academic year calendar and you can start any month you want.

There is also an additional and optional section to prevent procrastination, help you study less, and get more done.

If this is not the ultimate student planner for you then see the best planners for college .

There is a section for each month with a daily planner , weekly planner , monthly planner , study tracker, assignment tracker, homework tracker , project planner, essay planner and a to-do list . If you don’t want daily and weekly planning pages then you can delete pages on the digital planner or not print them on the printable academic year planner.

The calendars are available in daily, weekly and monthly formats to help you plan your days and weeks. You can use the monthly calendar to plan ahead when you need to schedule exams or assignments.

Many of the sections are unique to an academic planner such as a study tracker, assignment tracker, essay planner, project planner, etc. Add the due dates of assignments in the month they are due or the month during which you want to prepare them. Whatever works for you.

Keep track of important dates such as exams, assignments, and extracurricular activities in the monthly calendar so you can see the bigger picture. The monthly overview is an important tool to ensure you are organized and help you with time management.

If you don’t check your schedule on a regular basis then set notifications on your phone so you don’t forget to submit papers or study for exams.

notes, sketches and checklist

There are note pages, space for sketches, and checklists. Use these sections to draw things like a vision board , mind map, class tracker, etc.

The advantage of a DIY planner is that you can totally customize each section to meet your specific needs. There are sections on the site that you might want to add to your planner.

A daily planner , weekly planner , monthly planner , homework tracker (there is one in the planner but this section has more options), goal planner and goal tracker , gratitude list or gratitude journal , password log , and a to-do list .

The college planner includes 12 months and has tabs from January to February. You can start your year any month and continue for 12 months. For example, if you want to start in July 2023 and end in June 2024 then click on the July tab to start and keep going until June.

You can add pages from other planners such as a habit tracker , self-care section, goal planner sheets, morning routine , etc.

Is there a way to change the name of the tabs because I want to delete some of the pages and things I don’t need and I’d like the months to be on the right side instead of the bottom, like switched, for the student planner.

Hi Carmina, There isn’t really a way to change the name of the tabs (unless you write on them). You might find one of the other digital planners better for your needs.

Student Planner Printables

Included in this Student Planner Printable Set:

Blank calendar pages.

  • These monthly calendars can be customized for a nice overview of each month (be sure to print the entire year at once). They're super simple and can be customized for Sunday or Monday weekly starts.

Weekly Schedule Printables

  • Have your student customize these schedule printables with their daily class and activity schedule. They're perfect for either traditional or block scheduling.
  • As you can see in the image above, you can even add times to the left of the boxes, if desired.

Daily Schedule Printables

  • These daily planner printables are the biggie ...the one you'll need a print of for every school day (easy to do with your home printer). It is broken down into hourly slots from 5am-10pm with additional areas for daily to-do lists, daily goals, and notes. They can be filled in with different subjects, activities, and appointments. There should be plenty of space for alllll of the info.

Assignment Trackers

Homework Trackers

  • These are for weekly homework assignments. If you want to simplify things a bit, you can omit the assignment trackers and just use the homework ones, instead.

Upcoming Tests and Quizzes Trackers

  • These are similar to the homework and assignment printables, but geared for testing. There is even space to include what needs to be studied.

Checklist Printables I absolutely love instilling an affinity to set goals. I think these list-specific printables will certainly help with that. The following are included: To-Do List Weekly Goals Monthly Goals Semester Goals

Using Your Planner Printables

  • You can download the printables you choose to include in your planner below the following two images.
  • Print these onto regular paper using your home printer.
  • I have a tutorial on customizing printables like this on my Printable Tags and Labels post .
  • I created a slightly offset printable with each sheet...the left margin is larger for hole punching. Use a standard three-hole punch with these to keep them in a binder.
  • Grab a three-hole punch here on Amazon.
  • My kids carry those larger, fabric binders (they come with a shoulder strap) to all of their classes. They also keep all of their homework and assignments in these binders. I designed this student planner printable set to be kept inside a binder like that, since they're the go-to for most students these days. However, a traditional three-ring binder would work, too.
  • This is the exact binder both of my boys used last year. It's from Amazon. Again, we like the strap feature on it.

Customizing Student Planners

  • You can download my Free Printable Planner Stickers to use with this planner, too (they are more geared to adult schedules, but many of them work perfectly with the student planner.
  • And grab some fun patterned washi tape here on Amazon.
  • Or, if you prefer, the plain washi tape may be more to your liking (here on Amazon).
  • And be sure to grab some adhesive tabs here on Amazon (my kids use these with their planners to mark their calendars/daily pages).

Between schoolwork, online work, homework, products, submitting work, and more, you might feel like you don’t have enough time in the day to plan and complete it.  To keep track of these things and make them a little more manageable, we wanted to give you this free homework planning sheet.  It will help you and your child stay on top of their work.

Homework and Organization sheet

I think the hardest part of the homework is learning how to budget time.  This lesson is hard for students to learn (even adults still struggle in this area!).   It’s important to teach our kids to budget & organize their time.  Time management skills are one of the best things we can teach our children. To help our kids tackle the time-management portion of homework, I give them this Homework Planning Sheet  every week.

On top of that, making a “to-do” list helps kids see what has to be done and allows them to check things off once it’s finished.  This gives them a sense of accomplishment.

This homework planner offers students the benefit of writing down all their tasks, reviewing what they must do, and budgeting their time to fit it all in.

Homework planning sheet for kids

It gives them a chance to look at the upcoming week and write down everything that they have to do for the week.  They can see exactly what needs to be done and when they need to do it.    We write in things like practice or appointments on certain days, so they can see where they will have limited time.

This homework planner is an easy way to help our kids with time management and organization.

Why do children fall behind on classwork?

  • Procrastination.   Are they setting aside enough time to complete their work?   Are they doing it before other things each day (before relaxing, sports, etc.)
  • Confusion.  Does your child understand the material and what they are asked to do for their homework?  Sometimes children ignore their homework because it is too confusing, and they are embarrassed to ask for help, admitting failure.

Tips to Remember While Doing School Work at Home:

homework station

  • Have a system for completed work.   When our kids finish their work and it has been submitted, we keep it in case the teacher can’t find it later (emails get lost, and I didn’t want our kids to have to repeat the work).   We kept one bin per child. We would paperclip the work from the week together and a piece of paper with the date on it (paperclipped to the top of the pile).  We’d throw it into the bin.  Simple.
  • Use this time to teach your child time-management skills.  Work before play.   It’s a lesson best learned when your child is young.
  • Use our Homework Organization Tip (which has worked for us for several years.)

When life threw everyone a curveball last spring and schools shut down, we were flustered but I felt an incredible need to organize as much as I could (especially with everything else totally outside of my control.) My daughter is the same way, she loves a good checklist and thrives on following schedules. While the teachers were trying as hard as they could, we knew we needed a way to keep track of what was due, and when.

child woing work on laptop on couch

That’s when I created this printable student weekly planner to organize assignments. It can also be used to write down that week’s schedule, homework, and even habit tracking. It really came in handy to organize everything during a stressful time!

free printable weekly planner

It’s great for all ages– for younger kids, you can draw icons to represent what you’re doing when. Older kids can fill it in themselves. Heck, it’s versatile enough that awesome adults like you can use it to plan meals, write down virtual learning schedules, or plan your homeschooling lessons!

(I even added a chore block to my kids’ schedule… they’re pitching in around the house and writing down one big chore a day was helpful for all of us.)

How to Download the Free Printable Student Planner

How to Use the Free Printable Student Planner

  • Download it to your computer and print (see instructions above.)
  • Fill out the far left column with time blocks or subject areas, depending on how you’re using the planner. Writing in time blocks creates a ‘block schedule’ that shows what is happening at that time each day, and writing subject areas allows for writing down the assignments or lessons for that subject each day.
  • I recommend clipping to a clipboard or protecting with a clear plastic dry erase pocket . You can then hang it on the wall using Command Strip Hooks . Another idea is to three hole punch it or place in a page protector and add it to a binder.

I hope this helps you and your family adapt to the ever changing school situation! Whether you homeschool, virtual school or go in person my goal is to make it as easy and stress free as possible with simple ideas to add systems and routines into your home life.

Putting Your Planners Together

Helpful tools to have on hand.

Below is a list of items that will help you put your student’s binder together.

If you homeschool you probably already have some of these.

Some of the items are optional but will help put you put your planners together faster and easier:

  • binders (approximately 9″ x 12″ or 22.9 cm x 30.5 cm)
  • hand-held hole punchers
  • reinforcement labels
  • self-seal laminating sheets
  • sticker paper
  • page protectors
  • colorful paper (optional)
  • colored pencils

free student planners

Before You Start Printing

Before printing your pages, I suggest going through each page first.

Decide on which pages you’d like to print multiple times such as the note-taking pages.

Next, look for pages you’d like to pair up so that you can print these back to back and save on paper .

For pages that may get some wear as the year goes by as well as the resource pages that they will use often, I suggest doing one of the following:

  • laminating pages
  • print on heavy copier paper or cardstock
  • insert into page protectors
  • use reinforcement labels

For the stickers , you can use sticker paper or you can simply have your child color the markers, cut them out, and just glue them into their planner.

Also, when printing your planner make sure your printer settings are set to “actual” size.

This will optimize your pages.

If you use the other settings, it tends to shrink the pages by adding wider margins.

printing instructions for planners

If you prefer to use the bookmarks at the end of the planners, you’ll want to print them on separate pages.

I suggest printing them on cardstock, having them laminated, or using reinforcement labels so that they don’t tear out.

In the pics below, I cut out the name portion of the bookmarks so that it could stick out even more.

I also made sure to hole punch each bookmark at least 2 inches above where the hole punch normally would go.

I suggest marking the holes first before hole punching just to make sure they stick out above the pages.

weekly page

Prefer to use index tabs ? I get it. Below I used index tabs on the top and side.

tab dividers

Printing Free Student Planner Versions

For the free version, you will want to pair up the first monthly spread page with either the graph paper or the oodles of doodles page.

You’ll also want to do the same for the second weekly page of the last week of the month.

Printing the Student Planner Deluxe

Since your pages are dated, you don’t have to worry about making multiples of those pages.

However, you may want to make multiple pages of the reading log, grade recorder, note-taking sheet, and brain dump pages as needed.

Again, go through the pages and see if you really need to print every page.

Some may be too advanced for your student’s grade level and others may be too basic.

Best Practices for Some Pages

Naturally, most of the sheets are self-explanatory, but I want to share with you different ways you can use your sheets as well as some best practices.

Weekly Spread Columns

Each day on the weekly sheet has a small column to the left and an even smaller column to the right. You can use the left boxes to enter the hour of the day or to just number each activity.

weekly page

Use the right column for symbols such as a checkmark for those activities that are completed and an X for those that are not finished.

Kids can use this sheet for notes, calculations, and doodling. I personally like using the graph page to help keep numbers straight when calculating math problems.

graph sheet for math

Attendance Sheet

We use colored highlighters on our attendance recorder.

Yellow for holidays, green for school days, pink for weekends, etc.

attendance record

If your student is not homeschooled, then please be careful when filling out the web resources page .

Instead of entering the actual password, I would fill in a hint for that password.

This way, if they misplace their planner, then you don’t have to worry about someone getting a hold of their internet information.

Note-Taking Pages

I created my version of the Cornell note-taking system that we use in our homeschool.

notes page

To learn more about this system if you are unfamiliar with it and so that you can apply it to the note-taking page, check out the video below.

Final Thoughts on Our Student Planners

Don’t forget to fill out the form at the end of this post to get your free version.

If you’d prefer to go with our student deluxe planner, click here –> to visit our shop .

No matter which planner you get, please go through the pages first to see how best to put it together.

You may or may not need every page saving you both paper and ink.

I hope that your student(s) find their planners helpful as they get through this school year.

Weekly Student Planner Templates

Students in Middle School and High School need some way to keep track of their assignments and activities. Some schools put together a spiral-bound "student agenda" that each student is required to purchase and use. These "agendas" (I prefer the term "student planner") typically include calendars, school rules, and a lot of weekly planner pages for listing assignments. If your school doesn't provide something like this, you can buy your own student planner or print your own planner pages using templates like the ones on this page.

Printing Two-Sided (Duplex Mode): These 2-page weekly planner pages are designed for printers that can handle printing on both sides of the page. Some instructions are provided on the cover page within each template. If your printer cannot print two-sided, your printer may allow a manual duplex mode (where you flip the pages yourself and reinsert them into the printer). Follow your printer's instructions for manual duplex printing. Experiment with a few pages at first to avoid wasting paper.

Student Planner - Weekday Columns / Subject Rows

Student Planner - Weekday Columns

⤓ Download XLSX For: Excel 2010 or later

This is one of the most popular weekly student planners. It lists the weekdays along the top and includes rows for up to 7 different subjects. You can list other activities on the bottom row and weekly action items and notes on the right side of the second page. You only need to edit the subjects on the first page. All the other pages will update based on the first page.

Student Planner - Subject Columns / Weekday Rows

Student Planner - Subject Columns

This version lists the Subjects along the top with the weekdays as rows. The to-do and notes sections are included on the second page at the bottom. Like the other templates, the Excel file allows you to edit the subjects listed at the top.

Weekly Student Planner - Basic

Weekly Student Planner - Basic

This is a basic version that lists subjects along the top and rows for each weekday. It doesn't include an action items or notes section, but it does still include the columns that can be used to check off the daily assignments.

How does a printable homework planner help special education students.

Special education students can benefit from using homework planners, as these tools address various challenges they may face in managing their school work. A well-structured homework planner provides clear visual cues, enabling special education students to better understand their assignments, due dates, and progress. By breaking down tasks into smaller, more manageable steps, homework planners can help reduce feelings of overwhelm and frustration, allowing students to focus on one task at a time.

Planners foster a sense of routine and consistency, which is especially beneficial for special education students who may struggle with executive functioning skills, such as organization, time management, and prioritization. In essence, a homework planner can serve as a supportive scaffold for special education students, empowering them to take ownership of their learning and ultimately fostering increased independence and academic success.
