Some love stories are so iconic that they become timeless. We all have a favourite love story. Strangely, in what can only be described as a nation-wide serendipity, for most Indians, it is Shah Rukh Khan and his wife, Gauri Khan’s love story.
It is only fitting that the man who taught romance to an entire generation, and more, has a love story that’s straight out of a 70mm film. It’s been almost three decades to their love and yet, they still remain one of the most loved, admired and talked about couples in Bollywood. A mansion, three kids and an empire together later, we can never stop gushing every time they make a public appearance together. Is that the power of stardom? Sure. But also the power of love. Here’s taking a look at the incredible love story of the King, Shah Rukh and his wife Gauri Khan.
How shah rukh khan and gauri khan first met.
Born on November 2, 1965, into a middle-class family, Shah Rukh Khan first met Gauri in 1984, when he was all of 18, while Gauri was just 14. He bumped into her at a party where she was dancing with her friend. At first, SRK was quite shy to ask for a dance, since she was already dancing with another guy.
Finally when SRK mustered up courage to ask Gauri for a dance, she turned him down saying that she was waiting for her boyfriend. But in reality, she was waiting for her brother. Of course, SRK found out about this later and got a new lease on life and his chances with Gauri Khan.
According to Shah Rukh Khan’s several interviews, his first date with Gauri Khan was at Delhi’s Panchshila Club, as two nervous teenagers. After their first date, the romance began, what can only be described as a classic scene out of a 90’s Bollywood movie.
Gauri too fell for Shah Rukh Khan’s wit and charm. Well, who wouldn’t? SRK would keep calling at Gauri’s residence pretending to be her friend. Their romance was going smooth, but just like all classic love stories, this one had its fair share of drama.
While their relationship was going smoothly, Gauri’s parents had their doubts about the interfaith relationship and didn’t approve of it. Shah Rukh Khan too, didn’t make things easy on her. As a young man in love, he grew possessive of his lady love, and didn’t like when Gauri would talk to other men.
Gauri Khan reached a point where she just grew frustrated with it all and decided to take a break. A day after she celebrated SRK’s birthday with him, she just left for Mumbai along with her friends the next day, without informing him.
This drove Shah Rukh Khan mad, and this is when he realised his love for her and was absolutely terrified of losing her. Not knowing what to do, he confided in his mother, who gave him Rs 10,000 to go to Mumbai and look for Gauri.
In true Bollywood style, SRK immediately left for Mumbai along with his friends. Clueless about where to find Gauri, they kept searching all over the city, but without any luck. They were all broke and just didn’t know where else to look. That is when SRK remembered that Gauri really liked beaches, and as luck would have it, he found her at a beach.
That is when they reunited and SRK asked Gauri to marry her, to which she said no. In an interview, SRK revealed that a year later when his mother passed away, Gauri felt bad for him and they decided to get married. But if you thought this is the happy ending, you’re wrong.
Like any Indian family, Gauri Khan’s strictly Hindu family was against this interfaith marriage. Gauri’s father was a strict vegetarian and they even had a temple inside their house. Not just that, her father also thought that they were far too young and immature to make such a big life decision.
But of course, it’s Shah Rukh Khan. How can he not bowl over absolutely anyone he ever meets? Gauri Khan’s parents were no different, and it was only a matter of time until they developed a liking for him. Finally after overcoming all hurdles, Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan got married on October 25, 1991, in a Hindu wedding.
More than 30 years later since that day, the couple today has three beautiful kids, a mansion that is a tourist attraction in its own and one of the biggest production houses in the country. They are still what we call couple goals.

It's been close to three decades since Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan tied the knot. And yet, after all these years, the couple continues to be one of India's most discussed and admired Bollywood couples. Whether the Khans are spotted flying out of the country with their three kids, celebrating with their close-knit group of friends, or supporting each other's projects—they never fail to receive lots of love from their millions of fans on social media. And despite their popularity, Shah Rukh and Gauri Khan have always managed to keep relationship private. Here's a look back at some of their biggest milestones together.
Few know it, but Shah Rukh first fell for Gauri when he was 18 years old. The Delhi teen bumped into Gauri at a party when she was just 14. Rumour has it that the couple's first date was at Delhi's Panchshila Club. Anupama Chopra's book King of Bollywood: Shah Rukh Khan and the Seductive World of Indian Cinema also reveals that the young couple spent their first meeting (which barely lasted five minutes) sitting by the pool, ‘nervously sipping colas’. Once Shah Rukh got Gauri's number, he'd call her at home pretending to be a friend named Shaheen.

Shah Rukh and Gauri Khan's road to settling down together wasn't the easiest. During their courtship years, the couple are said to have faced several hurdles. One fight between the two led Gauri to leave Delhi for Mumbai without letting Shah Rukh know. With just Rs 10,000 in his pocket, Shah Rukh followed Gauri to the city that would eventually become his home, and made up with her at Mumbai's Gorai beach. The couple finally got married on October 25, 1991. Turns out, Shah Rukh Khan had to borrow a suit from the costume department of his movie Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman for the occasion.

Having worked in several TV series, Shah Rukh took the decision to move to Mumbai reportedly as a way to escape the feeling of loss left behind after his mother's death. But believe it or not, Gauri wasn't always on board with her husband's career plans. “She prayed for Shah Rukh's film to fail so that they could move back to Delhi,” director and close friend Karan Johar once told Vogue . “I had no patience for films,” Gauri agrees. “It was only after I met Shah Rukh that I learnt to enjoy his passion for cinema.” Over the years, Gauri hasn't just stood by her husband's projects; she's endorsed them too. Gauri has played producer for many of Shah Rukh's films including Main Hoon Na (2004), Om Shanti Om (2007) and Dear Zindagi (2016). Which of his roles is her favourite? “I loved him in Chak De! India (2007). I thought he looked and performed his best.”

Six years after their wedding, the Khans welcomed their first son, Aryan, on November 13. Since then, the celebrity duo's family has grown by two more. Shah Rukh and Gauri's only daughter, Suhana, was born on May 22, 2000, while their youngest, AbRam Khan, came via surrogacy on May 27, 2013. While Shah Rukh Khan has always been in the spotlight, his family is seldom seen at public outings. “My life is with Shah Rukh and the kids,” Gauri Khan once revealed to Vogue . “He is the best husband and father I could ever ask for. I always say that I am so fortunate to be with Shah Rukh Khan, the man. I don't come from a space where I gush and praise—the world is doing enough of that. I like to keep my love for him private and inside the doors of Mannat .” In Shah Rukh's words, “We give marriage too much importance; we're trying too hard. Things that are done with ease, acceptance and love will always be successful. The best thing we do is wake up in the morning and have a cup of tea and family time. I can't understand the importance given to Gauri and my marriage—if you can keep a marriage ordinary, that's what makes it special.”

These days, Gauri Khan is busy with interior designing projects and her new store, Gauri Khan Designs. When Shah Rukh isn't celebrating his wife's milestone moments, you can expect to see him bringing his birthday in with her at their Alibaug home, or attending award shows by her side. Amidst the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, Shah Rukh even cooked food for Gauri and the family has been spotted spending time together.

Actor Shah Rukh Khan and wife-interior designer Gauri Khan have been married for over three decades now. Did you know Gauri's parents were initially against their marriage as Shah Rukh was a Muslim? In the first season of Koffee with Karan, Gauri had shared her thoughts on changing her religion and said that she respects Shah Rukh's religion, as he does hers. In a video from that Koffee with Karan episode that has appeared on Instagram, Gauri was seen on the couch along with Hrithik Roshan 's then-wife Sussanne Khan. In that episode, Gauri had said, “Aryan [Khan] is so into Shah Rukh, that he would follow his religion I feel. He will always say, ‘I am a Muslim.’ And when he tells this to my mother, she gets, ‘What do you mean?’ She's dealing with it and it is true.”

She continued, "There is a balance. I respect Shah Rukh’s religion but that doesn’t mean that I would convert and become a Muslim. I don’t believe in that. I think everybody is an individual and follows their religion. But, obviously there should be no disrespect. Like Shah Rukh would not disrespect my religion as well.”
A few years ago during his visit to the sets of Dance Plus 5, Shah Rukh had said, “Humne koi Hindu-Musalman ki baat hi nahi ki. Meri biwi Hindu hai, mai Musalman hoon. Aur mere jo bacche hain, wo Hindustan hain Jab wo school gae to school me wo bharna padta hai ki religion kya hai. To jab meri beti choti thi, usne aa ke pucha bhi mujhse ek baar, ‘Papa hum kaun se religion ke hain?’ Maine usme ye likha ki hum Indian hi hain yaar, koi religion nahi hai. Aur hona bhi nahi chahiye. (We have never discussed Hindu-Muslim. My wife is Hindu, I am a Muslim and our kids are Hindustan. When my daughter was small, in her school they had to write their religion.
