Listening to music during class should not only be allowed, but encouraged

Listening to music in class allows students to tune out distractions and focus more on their work.

Listening to music in class allows students to tune out distractions and focus more on their work.

William Chastain , Staff Reporter January 7, 2021

Listening to music during class was always a risky move, especially back in middle school, when it seemed like the only goal of the teacher was to snuff out the students with one AirPod in their ear listening to popular rap music. But what these administrators who make the “no music during class” rule don’t understand is that music helps students perform better in class.

The same rules apply in high school, where the pressure to perform is even more intense and the distractions we faced in middle school are amplified due to the more intense stress and higher stakes. For example, going on your cell phone in middle school isn’t a huge deal and the long term effects are minimal. But in high school, getting distracted by a notification can mean missing an assignment and getting a poor grade. The “no music during class” rule was already unwanted by many students even before the pandemic, but with social distancing having been implemented across the country, the demand from teachers for students’ undivided attention is more difficult to comply with.

School through Zoom is challenging, to say the least. Distractions are everywhere when class takes place on a computer. There are chatting services, social media, YouTube videos, Reddit and video games available to students on technological devices. It’s these distractions that make completing work on time and succeeding in school much more difficult. Every computer application that isn’t school- related becomes a distraction during distance learning. When it comes to staying focused in class, it’s necessary to have a way to tune out distractions. Some students use a different computer than their personal device so as to avoid the many distractions that come with having non-school related applications installed on their computers. Some students uninstalled most of the distractions on their computers, while others have had their parents step in and install parental control programs onto their computers, which is something many dreaded as young kids but find somewhat necessary during these times. But the most successful and common tactic as far as I’ve noticed, is listening to music.

Going back to middle school, listening to music was risky, but in my case, necessary. I have always had trouble focusing in class due to my Attention Deficit Disorder. Listening to music served as a tool I could use to tune out distractions and focus on my work. When I sat down in humanities class to write an essay, instead of constantly being distracted by a weird looking cloud outside or some kids making noise in a physical education class, I was able to turn on a relaxing song and bust out six paragraphs, with little to no distractions and breaks. As someone who has struggled with staying focused, I can say that listening to music is an excellent way to cope with these problems.

Although it may seem like listening to music is yet another distraction, it isn’t, when used properly. But the question remains, how do we utilize music in an effective way, to tune out distractions, while not allowing it to distract from the task at hand? Well, the general rule is to only listen to music when you’re doing independent work, and to turn music off when listening to lectures or completing group work. As for the type of music, something calm and relaxing is preferred since you’re trying to tune out distractions, not create a new one. Following this rule allows a student to tune out distractions when necessary and focus better when completing independent work.

Grinding out work can be challenging when you’re getting pinged in Discord or when you get a Steam invite from a friend, and music can provide a diversion that allows you to focus on work while allowing part of your brain to wander freely. Of all the ways to avoid distractions in class, music is the easiest and most effective, and therefore our school should encourage and allow it during class.

Increased test anxiety may be lowered by allowing students to listen to music.

For as long as headphones have been allowed in schools, teachers have been fussing at students for listening to music in class. Many in the past generation remain unaware of the effects of music in a learning environment due to the recent jump in sound technology. Music is actually known to lower stress levels, provide a sense of familiarity, and allow students to zone in when used properly in an educational context.

One popular point is that music can decrease stress levels, allowing students to perform better on tests or quizzes. Researchers at Stanford University found that listening to music can reduce blood pressure and heart rate in some patients , which are both known signs of stress. The researchers also found that although slower music calms the muscles, a faster tempo can both help students concentrate easier and synchronize with brainwaves to keep a person relaxed and conscious.

Additionally, listening to something familiar in a setting where everything else is confusing can be a deciding factor in whether or not a person is able to make it through a situation — or in this scenario, pass a test. According to ADD Coach Academy’s website, most people find silence naturally awkward. Many students find that when they are uncomfortable they are unable to focus, and as a result, they receive lower scores on assignments. Even genres such as rap or pop, which are not known for increasing productivity, can boost a student’s performance based solely on the fact that they create a positive environment.

Students with ADHD, anxiety, or other mental disorders can especially suffer from the silence because it leaves them with only one thing to zone in on. As someone who has experienced anxiety for most of my schooling career, I can easily say that the quieter the room gets, the easier it is to hear my racing thoughts. Music has always provided an outlet for me by filling the silence and allowing me to focus on something else anytime I get too overwhelmed. Although I tend to listen to quieter music while I’m studying, I can understand why some students would just listen to whatever they feel comfortable with.

However, teachers should still take caution when allowing students to listen to their own music. Some kids may take the opportunity to call friends, watch videos, or otherwise take advantage of their newfound freedom.

How can educators prevent this? Ask students to keep their phones faceup on their desk, put on their music, and then leave their devices alone. My physics teacher adopted this method earlier this year, and almost all of the students have respected his restrictions thus far. These rules also make it easier to focus on the assignment, as I am not worried about switching back and forth between playlists — I queue up everything that I want to listen to and then leave my device alone.

All of this information leads to one conclusion: music can improve educational progression, and teachers should allow students to listen to music in school. Even those who choose not to listen to music in a professional setting can agree that almost everyone can benefit from a little bit of Beethoven, the Beatles, or some good old-fashioned beats.

Should Students Be Allowed to Listen to Music in Class: 7 Benefits of Music in the Classroom

I *almost* forgot Twitter Tuesday. BUT I had to post our soothing Christmas vibe in the classroom lately. Listening to Christmas music while sitting in front of a fire and the lights dimmed. Makes for for the perfect learning environment 🎄🔥 #oesrams pic.twitter.com/onnRKeUQAl — Lauren Ward (@WardsWiseOwls85) December 9, 2020

But background music is only one tool in our arsenal; there are many, many others worth using and understanding. As a music educator, I’m thrilled to share what I know about the power of music and how it can be applied in the regular education classroom.

How Music Modifies Behavior

Not only does music help create a sense of calm, but it can also:

Why Should Students Listen to Music in Class — 7 Benefits of Music in the Classroom

When it comes to illustrating the value of music in our schools, music educators are seasoned and passionate advocates and have generated a plethora of research for us to draw from. While a good chunk of that research focuses on music classrooms specifically, there is much that regular education teachers can apply to their own practices.

1. Auditory Development and Language Skills

2. long-term brain development and health.

Music education in the classroom has been shown to offer long-term benefits for brain development and health, a fact supported by various studies:

3. Improved Academic Performance

These points illustrate the broad impact of music education, not just on academic performance but also on the overall well-being of students. By incorporating music into the curriculum, schools can provide an enriching and holistic educational experience that supports both intellectual and personal growth.

4. Emotional and Behavioral Growth

5. social skills and cooperation.

Incorporating music into classroom activities has been shown to significantly enhance social skills and foster cooperation among students:

These benefits demonstrate that music is not just an artistic endeavor but a powerful tool for social and personal development. By integrating music into educational settings, educators can provide students with essential life skills that go beyond academic learning.

6. Stress Reduction and Emotional Well-being

Music in the classroom serves not only as an educational tool but also significantly contributes to stress reduction and the enhancement of emotional well-being among students:

7. Motor Skills and Coordination

Addressing opposing views on music in the classroom.

In conclusion, while it’s important to consider the potential downsides of allowing music in the classroom, it’s equally important to recognize its potential benefits and consider flexible policies that cater to different student needs and preferences.

5 Strategies for Incorporating Music

Of course, designing impactful instruction is much easier said than done. I’ve spoken with many colleagues who feel at a loss to know how to strategically use music in their classrooms. You might feel the same way, but I promise—it’s easier than you think!

We’ve already talked about how using background music in the classroom can be helpful for students and for improving the classroom atmosphere. The usefulness of music does not — and should not stop there.

As a music teacher, one of my favorite strategies is to use storybooks to make a literature connection. This can be done with beloved early childhood books like “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See,” “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom,” and others. Seasoned music educators like Tracy King and Aileen Miracle are my go-to resources when it comes to planning a music-anchored literature lesson — they will work perfectly in any elementary classroom!

Of course, there are high-tech ways to use music in the classroom, too! Google’s Chrome Music Lab allows students to create and explore different sounds, colors, and patterns. Any one of the different available apps could be used as a structured activity or as a creative brain-break. I love using my SMART Board to have students come up and create in front of the class.

For more ideas and strategies, check out this YouTube video!

The Mozart Effect

Addressing whether “should students be allowed to listen to music in class” in the context of the Mozart Effect is intriguing. The term refers to the idea that listening to Mozart makes you smarter…sort of. A 1993 study claimed that participants showed better spatial reasoning skills after listening to ten minutes of Mozart’s sonata for two pianos. However, because the enhancing effect only lasted a few minutes and was difficult to replicate in other studies, the results were controversial.

Still, the idea of the Mozart Effect became wildly popular—though it was later proved that listening to other types of music achieved the same outcomes. A large study done in 2006 showed that children responded even better to pop music. So, if Mozart’s music isn’t what makes students “smarter,” then what is? It seems that enjoyment and engagement are the key.

If we want to use music in the classroom and make the most of whatever boost the Mozart Effect can give, we need to be intentional with our selections. Delving into pop, K-pop, electronic, and international genres and artists, to find what students respond to, will greatly impact their engagement.

Useful Resources

I also believe that no matter the grade level or content area you teach, this post has something that you can put in your pocket and use in your classroom. Don’t be afraid to research and customize the perfect way to incorporate music for you and your students.

You’ve written it so nicely, and you’ve come up with some great ideas. This is a fantastic post!

Thank you so much!

Welcome to Ashlee's School Blog.

Just something i have to have for school., persuasive essay: should students be allowed to listen to music during a test.

Any STAAR test, I think we all can agree, is an excruciating five-hour experience. During that time period, many students undergo stress and exhaustion. However, if schools were to allow students to listen to music while testing, this could make these five hours of torture a little sweeter. Although some may argue that this causes students to be more so distracted, studies have shown that music improves the brain’s function and can prevent student distractions, like boredom or fellow classmate disruptions. Some will argue that music would be a bigger distraction than the everyday pencil drops and chattering. If a student is distracted easily, music is not advised… Dr. Perham, research of music, stated, “…listening to music may dismay your cognitive abilities… memorizing things in order… thrown off or confused by the various words or notes in the song…” However, music can improve awareness, the ability to do mental math, and even lessens depression and anxiety. In contrast, music can also improve brain functionally. For example, while taking the math test, music is a major bonus. Music and math are inextricably compatible, from counting rhythms to reading symbols. Information pertained from the “National Education Longitudinal Study” by the U.S Department of Education, discovered that students involved in music had a higher mathematical achievement and proficiency in high school. Music not only strengthens your academic levels, it also prevents the issue of student interruptions, such as drowsiness, boredom, or other classmate disruptions. When a task is clearly given and repetitive in nature, studies have shown that music is consistently helpful. For example, HelpScout.org presented, “… a series of experiments have investigated the relationship between the playing of background music during the performance of repetitious work and efficiency in performing such a task…. gave strong support.” Also, HelpScout.org stated, “…assembly line workers showed signs of increased happiness and efficiency while listening to music.” While music may be distracting for some, for others, music helps brain functioning attributions. A five-hour STAAR test could be enlightened with this proposal. Let us, as a society, change the amount of stress that children endure through school, increase their brain activity, efficiency, and mood through the privilege of music.

An Argument for Music

Critic alex ross keeps "classical" music current..

July-August 2008

The first movement of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto ended, and Carnegie Hall erupted in applause. Joshua Bell, whose dazzling solos and severe good looks had fired the crowd, pulled a handkerchief from his pocket and wiped it theatrically across his brow. The audience remained enthralled, but Alex Ross ’90, sitting in the critic’s traditional perch halfway up the left aisle, jotted down his thoughts in a small black notebook.

Ross was less interested in Bell than in how conductor Kent Nagano was molding his new group, the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. Already, Ross heard hints of Nagano’s signature sound: a cool, elegant balance. But the concerto itself, he noted during the intermission, wasn’t quite together. “Bell performed very brilliantly. But I didn’t feel he and Nagano and the orchestra were totally in sync,” Ross said. “Bell seemed to be in his own world a bit, and the orchestra was a little eeeehhh…” He made a nervous motion with his hands, as if someone were trying to hand him a small, rambunctious animal.

Ross wasn’t planning to review the concert for the New Yorker , where he is a staff critic. He simply wanted to keep up with a favorite conductor and hear the American premiere of a piece by Unsuk Chin, a Korean composer whose opera he had reviewed favorably the previous summer. “Absolutely essential to my mission as a critic is talking about living composers,” he said. “It wouldn’t be interesting to me to spend all my time evaluating the right way to play Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. I enjoy writing that kind of column, but the greatest excitement is when works come into being.”

Ross’s approach is both thorough and adventurous. He once spent three months listening to Mozart’s complete works (180 CDs) for a single essay, but he’s just as likely to seek out music that breaches the pop/classical divide. In recognition of his eclectic and exacting criticism, the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers has honored him twice, and his book, The Rest Is Noise: Listening to the Twentieth Century , won the 2007 National Book Critics Circle Award for criticism and was a finalist for the 2008 Pulitzer Prize in general nonfiction.

He first aired some of the ideas that appear in his book while an undergraduate English concentrator who spent “an ungodly amount of time” at WHRB, the student radio station. During his junior and senior years, Ross hosted a program called Music after 1900 and he now describes the mini-essays he wrote to introduce each segment as precursors to his book.

After graduation, Ross moved briefly to northern California, where he co-wrote a screenplay for a romantic comedy. (“That didn’t quite go anywhere,” he says.) In 1992, he began reviewing music for the New Republic but, uncertain about pursuing a career in journalism, he also applied to Ph.D. programs in English. He was accepted at Duke, but turned that down when he received an offer to freelance for the New York Times .

In New York, Ross attended five or six concerts a week, taking notes in programs that quickly crowded his apartment. Almost every morning he had to wake up and write a brief review for his noon deadline. “I had a hard time with it, actually,” he says; the writing “felt kind of like an official communiqué.” He preferred having space to write about both music and the culture surrounding it. Discouraged, he applied for graduate school again in 1993.

This time he got into Harvard and nearly returned to Cambridge, but an experience writing a book review for the New Yorker gave him pause. Although the editors’ eagerness to rip up and reassemble his review had been intimidating, Ross liked joining his scholarly bent (the book was about the history of opera’s gay fan base) with his desire to connect the music he loved to a broad, adventurous readership. “There’s this great notion at the New Yorker that any topic, no matter how obscure, can be made interesting or made comprehensible,” he says. “Classical music fit in very well with that.” After writing a few more freelance pieces for the magazine, he joined its staff in 1996.

Ross does his New Yorker writing in a Chelsea apartment or his office in Times Square. But writing a book, he found, required a different approach. To escape distractions, he ensconced himself in a coffee shop on Eighth Avenue whenever he could steal time away from his normal duties. In magazine pieces he tries first to grab the reader’s attention, then provide context, and finally zero in on details. “That basic rhythm doesn’t work for a book chapter at all,” he reports. “You don’t need to seize the reader’s attention at the beginning of chapter seven.”

The first draft, completed in 2005 after four years of work, was a whopping 390,000 words long. Ross e-mailed his final draft—half the original size—to his publisher from a Los Angeles hotel room overlooking the recently constructed Walt Disney Concert Hall, where conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen had reinvigorated the city’s orchestra by injecting contemporary music into the program. “It was kind of nice looking down at Disney Hall, because it symbolized what the L.A. Philharmonic has achieved,” he says. “It’s what I try to achieve as a writer.”

Ross’s most common vehicle for highlighting new music is his critical column, which he writes at least once every few weeks. It may be as straightforward as a review of a new production at the Metropolitan Opera or as unexpected as a round-up of talented student composers. “I do feel that a big part of my mission is not merely to write these reviews, but to write intelligently and appealingly about classical music itself for an audience that may not know a lot about the topic,” he says. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to make an argument for music.”

His most pointed argument appeared in a 2004 essay, “Listen to This.” He aims his opening salvo at the very term “classical music”—arguing that “It traps a tenaciously living art in a theme park of the past…The phrase is a masterpiece of negative publicity, a tour de force of anti-hype”—and then makes a case for music appreciation based on emotional investment. “Music is too personal a medium to support an absolute hierarchy of values,” he writes. “The best music is music that persuades us that there is no other music in the world.” Whether that’s a concerto, a pop song, or an electronic noise experiment is up to you. He concludes by imagining himself a 36-year-old who goes to the symphony for the first time and encounters a rigid ritual that seems designed to keep him from having fun. He coughs; people “glare.” He applauds at the end of a movement; people “glare again.”

Ross worries that the concert-going ritual sometimes runs counter to the spirit of the music. Mozart’s operas draw on sounds both high and low. Beethoven’s music is full of earthy dance rhythms. Gustav Mahler, Ross says, embraced just about everything. “It’s ironic if we start taking those pieces and confining them in a space that’s so regulated,” he argues. “It almost betrays the spirit of those pieces.” But despite these small irritations, Ross still believes that classical music—especially as heard in concert halls, with the resonances and overtones that are lost in recordings—offers something unique. “It’s like escaping into some wide-open empty landscape,” he says. “There’s almost a spiritual dimension to the experience. At its best, it can be like religion without dogma—the feeling of a bigger presence looming above you, requiring nothing but a certain stillness.”

Nine Teaching Ideas for Using Music to Inspire Student Writing

persuasive essay about listening to music in class

By Natalie Proulx

  • May 10, 2018

Some of the greatest written works of our time have been inspired by music. Walt Whitman conceived of and wrote “Leaves of Grass” while listening to opera . Alice Walker, Langston Hughes, Ntozake Shange and Ralph Ellison were all moved by spirituals, jazz and blues . And Lin-Manuel Miranda’s rap musical “Hamilton” was born of his love of hip-hop . These writers understood what many educational researchers know — that music opens up pathways to creative thinking, sharpens our ability to listen and helps us weave together disparate ideas .

In this teaching resource, we suggest nine exercises to use music to inspire student writing — from creating annotated playlists and critical reviews to music-inspired poetry and personal narratives. Each idea pulls from Times reporting, Opinion pieces and multimedia on music to give students a place to start. The activities are categorized according to three genres: creative and narrative writing; informative and explanatory writing; and persuasive and argumentative writing.

How do you use music in your classroom? Let us know in the comments.

Creative and Narrative Writing

Exercise #1: Write a story or poem inspired by music.

One way you might let your students be inspired by music is to have them describe in words what they hear, a method Jean-Michel Basquiat employed in his poetry and paintings.

In “ Bowie, Bach and Bebop: How Music Powered Basquiat ,” Ekow Eshun writes:

In 1979, at 19, the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat moved into an abandoned apartment on East 12th Street in Manhattan with his girlfriend at the time, Alexis Adler. The home, a sixth-floor walk-up, was run-down and sparsely furnished. Basquiat, broke and unable to afford canvases, painted with abandon on the walls and floor, even on Ms. Adler’s clothes. The one item that remained undisturbed was Ms. Adler’s stereo, which had pride of place on a shelf scavenged from the street. “The main thing for us was having big speakers and a blasting stereo. That was the only furniture I purchased myself,” said Ms. Adler, who still lives in the apartment. When Basquiat was around, she recalled, “music was playing all the time.” On Thursday, the exhibition “Basquiat: Boom for Real” opened at the Barbican Center in London. The show focuses on the artist’s relationship to music, text, film and television. But it is jazz — the musical style that made up the bulk of Basquiat’s huge record collection — that looms largest as a source of personal inspiration to him and as a subject matter.

Invite your students to read the article and then listen to the Times-curated Spotify playlist “ The eclectic taste of Jean-Michel Basquiat ” as they view his art and read his poetry . Discuss what they notice about the musical influence in Basquiat’s work. How do the content, colors, textures and shapes in his paintings resemble the sounds they hear? How are these reflected in the words, phrases, mood and rhythm of his poems?

Do you want your essay on music to be interesting and expressive? Then you may want to use descriptive vocabulary. Here are some of the terms that you can use in your essay to make it sound more professional:

  • Tempo is the “speed” of music. There are fixed expressions to define tempo—for example, largo, moderate, or presto. You can also describe how fast the music feels.
  • Timbre is the term that evaluates the “color” of music. Even if two instruments play the same note of the same volume, the sound is still different. This is how you can notice the color of the tone. For example, gentle, clear, heavy, or warm can be the adjectives to describe timbre.
  • Dynamics define the volume levels of music. The volume can be the same all the time, for example loud or soft. If the volume of music changes, you can use such expressions as “gradually gets louder” “or suddenly becomes soft.”
  • Harmony characterizes how all the notes and chords sound together. The sequence of chords—chord progression—defines how satisfying the melody is for the listener. For example, if the transitions are smooth, you can use such words as “relaxed” or “warm.”

Music Essay Outline

Like any other assignment, writing about music requires a proper essay outline that will guide you through the writing. The following sections will help you with that.

Before you start, here are some tips that will help you prepare for writing:

  • Do some prior research. Try to learn as much as possible about the piece you will be writing about. It’s also helpful to listen to the music several times with headphones to notice more details.
  • Don’t be afraid of asking questions. Consult your instructor if you’re unsure about your topic or the piece you have chosen.
  • Choose the topic that you like. If you’re passionate about a subject, it is always easier to write about it. Who said that homework could not be interesting?
  • Follow the recommendations that your instructor gives. It includes word limit, formatting style, deadline, and essay type.

Music Essay Introduction

The introduction is the section where you come up with a brief explanation of the topic. You may start it with a quotation, definition, or short statement that catches your reader’s attention and leads them to the essay subject.

A thesis statement is usually the last sentence of the introduction that defines the content of body paragraphs. It needs to be specific and not longer than two sentences. If you decide to shift the focus of your essay while writing, it’s crucial to change your thesis too.

Different types of essays require different thesis statements. Let’s take a closer look:

Essay typeExplanationThesis example
You need to evaluate an issue or idea. It can be a review of a concert or music piece. Pink Floyd’s use of multimedia in enriched the listener’s experience and created additional meanings.
Here you need to explain an idea, problem, or opinion to your readers. Modern rap performers influence behavioral patterns among teenagers through their lyrics and visuals.
Your aim is to introduce a claim and justify it by using evidence. David Bowie became one of the most significant musicians of the 20 century by mastering various music genres.

Music Essay Body

Your essay’s body is the most significant part of your writing. Here, you provide evidence and explanations of your claims.

The typical body paragraph structure includes:

  • A topic sentence explaining the argument for a particular paragraph.
  • An introduction to the evidence you gathered to support an argument.
  • Quotes and facts (don’t forget about proper citation!) and their explanation.
  • A connection between the evidence and the essay topic.
  • Paragraph transitions  leading your reader to the next section.

Topic Sentence about Music

Topic sentences can be used as a roadmap to writing your essay. Each body paragraph begins with a topic sentence that defines what the paragraph is about. It introduces the argument or main thought that will be explained. It’s also connected with the thesis statement.

It’s essential to make your thesis easy to understand, so it’s better not to overcomplicate it. For example, here’s an unsuccessful topic sentence with unnecessary words:

As stated above, the guitar is an essential musical instrument in rock music that defines how it sounds.

Instead, you can formulate it like this:

The guitar is the most iconic musical instrument in rock music that defines how it sounds.

Music Essay Conclusion

When writing a conclusion for your essay on music, you can use the following structure:

  • Summarize the text in a few sentences.
  • Review the key points of your paper.
  • Paraphrase the thesis.

To make your essay conclusion more effective, avoid the following:

. Try to and analyze it, and add some information from the body paragraphs.
You don’t have to fully paraphrase your thesis statement. However, you can mirror it in some way.
It’s like finishing a movie with an unsolved problem. It’s also better to avoid rhetorical questions as they are not specific enough.
You can use quotes in the introduction or body paragraphs, but make sure to use only your own words in the conclusion. Otherwise, the readers might think you don’t have a personal opinion on the topic.

✏️ Music Essay FAQ

Music is a vast topic. An essay might deal with anything ranging from trends in the 1950s to the best guitarists of all time. Writing an introduction to certain music styles or bands is also possible. In any case, the paper should be well-structured, logical, and cohesive.

Writing about music doesn’t necessarily require any specific skills. If you’re not familiar with the theory of music and can’t play musical instruments, you can just write about the music you like. Here are some topic ideas: favorite music band, style, or how you perceive music.

You can interpret music as a topic in various ways. If you are getting a degree in this field, you might want to write something more specific and technical. If your essay aims to merely inform and entertain, write about your favorite music style or band.

If you are writing an essay for school, a good choice would be an expository essay. It doesn’t require any specific knowledge of the music industry. Title suggestions might be: “My perception of music,” “My favorite band,” “How music can change the world.”

How To Write a Why Us Essay

Hospital nurse staffing and patient mortality, nurse burnout, and job dissatisfaction, nurse-staffing levels and the quality of care in hospitals, reasons to look for inspiration in music essay sample, example.

The styles of music can vary greatly. It takes a discerning listener to classify a particular song, as it may have strains of several music trends. Besides trends, each culture produces its specific music. To me, music is more than just a way to relax and take a break. Music is my companion for life, my indicator of mood, my best adviser, and my own little world. I would never call music a hobby, as I cannot imagine my life without my favorite music. There is a playlist for when I am sad, for when I am happy, for when I am thoughtful, excited, angry, adventurous, or sleepy. Music helps me to cope with the emotions that I experience. Sometimes, music is a way to hide from everything and everyone. Other times, music is the best way to share my feelings with people I care about, or even with complete strangers. Music is the most inspirational phenomena I can think of for a multitude of reasons.

Music is a world of emotions and every time I hear a song I like, it shares some of these emotions with me. Music can bring up the most tender and anxious feelings. It can move you in time and space by bringing back special memories of which you were craving to relish. There were many cases when music sent shivers down my spine, so honest and strong were the tunes, so powerful the memories they awakened. I am sure it happened to everyone at least once, that a strong memory is somehow linked to a certain song or tune and whenever you hear it playing, you travel back to that situation in your thoughts, able to experience that it again (Connors 65). We sometimes forget how powerful music is and how inspirational its power can be.

In addition, music is able unite people like nothing else can (Poplars 45). Sports, mutual interests, and similar experiences can unite people in a substantial way. But what about those cases when people have nothing in common and are total strangers, yet they suddenly find themselves holding hands and singing along, dancing, or simply silently listening to captivating beats. Music is able to make complete strangers feel like they have connected to a kindred soul. If you have at least once been to a great live concert, you probably know what kind of inspiration I am talking about. It is difficult to describe this phenomenon with words, but is it not what proves again the power of music to inspire? You do not need to speak a foreign language to connect to somebody from a different background, using music instead of words. Music comes in handy in these cases. It inspired you to make new friends or learn more about a foreign culture.

Music is multi-dimensional—you can never get bored of it. While I have a number of favorite artists and bands, I also never stop exploring the musical amplitude and discovering new performers every day. Music adds flavor to my life and this flavor is different depending on “what dish I am eating.” Music can be so much more than an accompaniment—it is a full-fledged spice that can accentuate, muffle, or supplement any experience. If I were to leave for a deserted island and could only take a few items, my player and a couple of solar-charging batteries would be my choice. That way, I could adjust to the environment around me and find inspiration where others might find devastation and frustration.

Though music is nothing new, the creation of new melodies, rhythms, and symphonics will be created every day. In fact, I believe music has been around us for as long as we have existed (Lung 24). When I say that music is everywhere, I first of all mean that music comes from nature—the sound of crackling straw in the field, rustling trees in a grove, or the murmur of a fast mountain stream. Music in all of its forms is around us and the task is only to notice it and learn to appreciate how it can be shared. Music can be a source of inspiration for almost anyone, since it can be a unique key to suite any lock, even the most complicated and tenacious. Music has the power to make us want to smile at every stranger walking by, simply because we are hearing a transcendent song.
