Students hiking in the mountains

From outdoor leadership to camp management to environmental awareness, our program covers every dimension of outdoor education. Numerous opportunities for practical experience complement our curriculum.

Exceptional Faculty

Professors Amy DiRenzo, Charles Yaple and Anderson Young teach many courses in this concentration. They have held leadership positions with the North American Association for Experiential Education, the Coalition for Education in the Outdoors and the Association of Outdoor Recreation and Education. They also are published authors and boast a wealth of experience with programs such as Outward Bound, the Wilderness Education Association and Leave No Trace.

Outdoor Pursuits

Housed in the Student Life Center, this hub of activity strives to bring students into the outdoors. The office is open seven days a week, overseeing various trips, workshops, outdoor gear rental, the Cortland Bike Project and the climbing/bouldering wall. Monthly trips take students backpacking, kayaking, camping and even skydiving.

Program Highlights

Located in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains, the William H. Parks Family Center for Environmental and Outdoor Education at Raquette Lake stretches more than 400 acres and is the only National Historic Landmark in the SUNY system. This educational site applies to many different disciplines and provides a natural environment for hands-on learning.

Career Potential

Our graduates direct university outdoor pursuits programs, lead trips for the National Outdoor Leadership School, guide clients on Adirondack whitewater trips and teach outdoor education in schools. They serve in management positions with state and federal agencies such as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, New York State Parks and the U.S. Forest Service. They also teach in local parks and nature centers or direct summer camps and retreat centers.

OAL – Master of Outdoor Adventure and Expedition Leadership

SOU OAL Student Chelsilyn Ball on Rupina La

Offered as a Master’s Degree in Outdoor Adventure & Expedition Leadership

The Master of Outdoor Adventure and Expedition Leadership (MOAEL) is designed to meet the needs of outdoor adventure leaders and educators in the regional, national, and international communities. This program targets outdoor educators and adventure leaders seeking a high-level graduate program with a strong foundation in theory and experiential learning, and equips students with the interdisciplinary skills required to grasp and develop new concepts, technologies, methods and trends in the outdoor adventure leadership field. The MOAEL will provide outdoor adventure leaders with the experience, knowledge and tools needed to advance into leadership roles and shape the future of this dynamic field. Above all, students will grasp and embody the concept of the “explorer” mindset: being determined, resilient and inquisitive to meet the demands of an uncertain, complex and ambiguous world.

By completing the program, students will gain leadership skills associated with the outdoor adventure industry, with an emphasis on learning to transfer and redirect their abilities towards any endeavor. In short, MOAEL students will gain the skills to lead any group, in any environment, towards any goal. To achieve this objective, students will develop their own regional, national, and international expeditions to gain key skill-sets that are critical for experiential leaders and modern day adventurers. Our students will become leaders, activists and explorers; developing their own unique and innovative leadership styles to shape the future of the outdoor adventure industry and to tackle the unstable, inexact, multifaceted, and unclear obstacles and challenges associated with any transformational expedition.

Cohort Model The MOAEL will incorporate a cohort model, with a new cohort starting every fall quarter and progressing through the academic program together. The cohort model fits perfectly with the expedition mindset; teams engage in tightly-knit learning communities of 10-12 students, encouraging their members to think deeply, participate actively, and work collaboratively towards a common goal. Cohorts are inherently student-centered, and designed to elicit collaboration, as each cohort member acts as the leader and learner; and students are encouraged to support everyone’s contribution to the group. Members build strong bonds through shared learning experiences, reflective in-depth group discussions, and an intense and demanding extended international expedition.

Program Layout MOAEL courses will be offered on SOU’s main campus, off-campus, nationally and internationally. The course of study will consist of five consecutive quarters, starting in the fall and ending the following fall, and including the summer quarter. Fall quarter will include a comprehensive self-assessment course, a graduate-level research methodology course, and an adventure leadership course. Winter quarter will include two more theoretical courses, focusing on adventure programming and risk management. During the winter, students will apply course content to planning the intensive spring undergraduate course and planning their summer international program. Spring quarter will involve helping to guide and teach undergraduate OAL students during the intensive spring quarter. Summer quarter will include a five-week international expedition. The second fall quarter will comprise reflection, including a final thesis that will involve a presentation at a professional conference that synthesizes students’ graduate study experience. Students will also take six to twelve elective graduate courses during both fall quarters and the winter quarter.

See Required Courses

To help fuel innovation and creativity in the outdoor recreation field, sound research is needed to contribute to the body of knowledge surrounding outdoor adventure. Every MOAEL students is required to write a thesis during the program. Students will start in the Fall with the methodology course and continue their research throughout the consecutive quarters. Each graduate student will work with a graduate advisor who will help guide and mentor their progress. Students will wrap up their research during the second Fall quarter and present their work at a professional conference such as the Association for Outdoor Recreation and Education.

The cohort will plan and execute an international expedition, combining the team’s shared experiences, individual skill sets and knowledge into a culminating transformational journey. The expedition will utilize the adventure and explorer mindset to advance a cause. In other words, the expedition will represent adventure with purpose: adventure that makes a difference and positively impacts the world. Each expedition will include a final documentary that will be shared with the SOU community during the Fall semester. The expedition will challenge every aspect of the student, mentally, physically, academically and spiritually.

The Children and Youth in Communities option is concerned with the support of positive child and youth development in community-based settings, and focuses on the ways in which societal and cultural institutions – including schools – shape developmental pathways, as well as the ways identities are formed as children and youth interpret their own academic, social, community, sexual, and political experiences. The program emphasizes an ecological and strengths-based view of children and youth, and sees individual learning and development as reciprocal with community growth and cultural transformation.

The  Children and Youth in Communities  option is a joint effort between the College of Liberal Arts and College of Health and Human Services faculty.  This approach provides students with a comprehensive scholarly and professional understanding of the social, cultural, psychological, physical, emotional and academic experiences of children and youth in local, national, and global contexts.

Curriculum and Instruction/Teacher Education

In the Curriculum and Instruction/Teacher Education program students study curriculum understanding and teacher development at all levels of schooling, ranging from early childhood to adulthood.  Students integrate theory and classroom practice in preparation for a future in teaching.

Curriculum and Instruction/Teacher Education are combined here because these two areas have considerable overlap, both in subject matter and in the career patterns of graduates, and as such have considerable overlap in course selection.

Experiential/Outdoor Education

Experiential/Outdoor Education area of inquiry is selected by those interested in the fields of adventure programming and experiential education in schools and other educational settings.  It is a collaborative area of inquiry, in which doctoral students work with faculty from the Education Department in the College of Liberal Arts and from the College of Health and Human Services.   Foci of doctoral studies in this area of inquiry have included the following topics:

  • Moral development changes in outdoor education majors at universities
  • Integrating experiential learning in K-12 classrooms
  • Experiential teacher training models
  • The use of rites of passage and rituals in educational settings
  • The effects of adventure orientation programs on incoming and continuing students at university settings
  • Adventure therapy as an evidenced-based practice
  • Social skill development of middle school children in adventure programs

Leadership and Policy Studies (LPS)

This specialization draws from such fields as educational administration, school law, collective bargaining, policy analysis, leadership, and higher education. Individuals who seek faculty positions in educational administration, higher education, and policy analysis often select this strand for specialization. Similarly, individuals who seek leadership positions in elementary and secondary schools as well as in higher education select this strand for their concentration. Graduates of this doctoral strand have assumed positions in higher education both as faculty members and as administrators. Our graduates have also used their preparation in leadership and policy to assume such positions as superintendent, director, and principal.

Our doctoral students have written quality dissertations on such subjects as school finance, supervision of employees in K-12 settings, as well as higher education cooperative extension, the role of chief information officers in higher education, and sexual harassment.

How to Apply

Blaze your professional trail.

The Outdoor Recreation Economy program at CU Boulder provides learners with a variety of opportunities to expand their knowledge and advance their careers in the outdoor recreation industry. This program’s flexible options allow you to engage in a way that fits both your career goals and your budget. Become an innovative leader, foster sustainable business operations, govern and promote access to public lands or leverage outdoor amenities to grow local, sustainable economies.

This program explores four central areas of the outdoor recreation business and how they intersect:

  • Outdoor recreation business and leadership: The manufacturers, retailers, tour operators and guides who facilitate the public’s enjoyment of open spaces and who can motivate consumer spending toward sustainability and public lands stewardship.
  • Public lands policy: The policies and regulations that govern access and sustainable use and that are crucial to the appropriate use, conservation and enjoyment of public lands.
  • Resilient communities: The communities that leverage natural resources to enhance or create new recreation economies. They face a variety of challenges, including competition and stressed infrastructure, but also the opportunity to diversify, showcase their culture and grow.
  • Inclusivity: The best practices for developing a more welcoming and inclusive outdoor recreation economy and expanding access to the outdoors to everyone.

I ultimately knew that I’d be working full-time while I was earning my master’s degree, and I loved that the classes were so flexible to fit around my job and spending my weekends outdoors. But at the same time, I wanted to have fully involved and collaborative online classes that were focused on the outdoor industry, which is exactly what the program has offered me. – Cassie Elrod | Outdoor Recreation Economy Program Student
