Today is 5th September and like every year we have assembled here to celebrate the Teachers Day. I am extremely honored to have been given the opportunity to host this program. On the day of teacher’s day, I would like to talk about one of the greatest personalities who I admire a lot, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. I am sure everyone admires the great missile man for his notable contributions to our nation.

Dr. APJ Kalam has been a great motivation for me and his entire life journey has played a very significant role in transforming my life in a positive way.

We all know that Dr. Kalam was an Indian scientist and a benevolent politician who served India as the President from the year 2002 to 2007. His full name was Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam. Born on October 15, 1931, into a Muslim family, Dr. Kalam was a sharp student and an obedient child who helped his family in earning the livelihood. He was born in Dhanushkodi located on the southeastern coast of India. As a child, Dr. Kalam developed a great fascination with air travel by watching birds. This hobby of Kalam later developed into a mission to join aeronautics; the mission got stronger after he saw an article in the newspaper about a British fighter plane.

His father’s profession was to build and rent boats. Kalam was a very bright and hardworking student. He distributed newspapers in his locality to support his father. But he always had great interest towards studies; he was a very promising student and showed enormous likings towards science and mathematics. Dr. Kalam went to St. Joseph’s College after passing from school and attended Madras Institute of Technology to earn his degree in aeronautical engineering.

He was always a promising student and grasped as much knowledge as possible in his school and college. Dr. Kalam joined the defense department of India after completing his graduation. Today is 15 th of October, which is the birth date of the world famous ‘Missile Man of India’ Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. He has been one of the most renowned figures at DRDO and this is why we at DRDO celebrate his birthday with much enthusiasm. The entire life journey of Dr. Kalam has been an immense inspiration for everyone and especially for the people working at DRDO.

Abdul Kalam was a renowned scientist and a well-known engineer. He also served as India’s President from the year 2002 to 2007. He was already an accomplished and much-loved individual when elected as the president in the year 2002.

Dr. Kalam had spent over four decades as a science administrator and scientist at various prestigious institutions like the DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organization) and ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization).

Dr. Kalam was born into a very humble South Indian family in Tamil Nadu. His father built and rented boats to fishermen working on the coast. As a child, Dr. Kalam was a highly promising student; he had an enormous fascination towards flight and later he went on studying aeronautics. He completed his degree in aerospace engineering from the Madras Institute of Technology. Though he wanted to turn into a fighter pilot but he did not qualify for the IAF (Indian Air Force) .

He then joined the DRDO as a scientist and later he was transferred to the ISRO. Because of his notable contributions in the field of research and developments, he ultimately became the Chief Scientific Adviser to the then Prime Minister Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee. As a national adviser too, he played a prominent role in the world famous nuclear tests: Pokharan II.

Popularly known as the People’s President, Dr. Kalam left the presidential position after serving for one term. He later became the professor at Anna University and taught Aerospace Engineering. He was also a visiting professor and motivated numerous young students and people at several other institutions.

The entire life journey of Dr. Kalam has been a great inspiration for each one of us. He was an ardent nationalist and the world knows him by the nickname “the missile man of India”.

Though a practicing Muslim, Dr. Kalam involved himself in the broader culture of India. In his spare time, he studied Indian classical music and one of the most sacred texts of Hinduism: Bhagavad Gita.

Dr. Kalam earned several accolades as well as honorary doctorates from over 40 universities. He received the Padma Bhushan award in the year 1981, the Padma Vibhushan in the year1990 and the highest civilian award of India ‘the Bharat Ratna’ in the year 1997 for his remarkable contributions in modernizing the defense technology of India. Apart from being a great scientist and a great personality, he was an avid writer too. He wrote several books including his autobiography Wings of Fire in 1999 which is a huge motivation for the youths of India.

Dr. Kalam always lived a simple life and he was a benevolent personality. He was always passionate towards doing something recognizable for India. He created “What Can I Give Movement” in the year 2011; it was created with a purpose of developing a compassionate society.

Dr. Kalam passed away on July 27, 2015, due to massive heart attack. During his last journey too, he was delivering a lecture at the IIM (Indian Institute of Management), Shillong.

This is all I have to say about this legendary personality, who strove hard during his tenure as an Indian President to strengthen the military base of the nation and enlighten the world through his edifying intellectual and moral thoughts.

Today’s class is going to be a little different from the rest as I am not going to discuss anything from your textbooks, but would like to talk about one eminent personality who I think everyone admires and looks up to as a source of inspiration even if he is not alive. The personality that I am talking about is Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. Yes students he is the one accredited with a title called The Missile Man of India and was the 11 th President of India. He was a great scientist, deep thinker and motivational speaker as well.

What makes him truly an inspirational figure for all of us is the fact that he hailed from a very humble background in a remote southern village of India called Rameswaram. It was the place where he got his first job of collecting newspaper bundles thrown from a moving train. He has shared his life experiences with everyone, especially with children and mentioned how he used to be filled with pride after recollecting those days of earning money on his own for the first time.

But even this great man, who has inspired millions of people, drew inspiration from many people who helped him in becoming what he was and of course earning the sobriquet The Missile Man of India. Let’s know about one of those personalities who shaped his personality and mentored him. Firstly, he was Iyadurai Solomon who was Kalam’s teacher and Kalam shared a great bond with him. This teacher greatly influenced Kalam’s thinking process as he gave him the mantra, “To succeed in life and achieve results, you must understand and master three mighty forces—desire, belief and expectation.”

Iyadurai Solomon was indeed a great teacher because he helped in shaping the personality of his students and finding a sense of self worth. He also told Abdul Kalam that “With faith, you can change your destiny.” From there began Kalam’s actual journey as he aspired and worked for greater things in life.

He even had this firm belief that he too can leave an impression on the society despite the fact that his parents didn’t enjoy the benefits of education. Abdul Kalam also used to get captivated by the mysteries of the sky and observe the flight of the birds from his early childhood days. Interestingly, he became the first child to fly from Rameswaram.

Many years later when Abdul Kalam visited Madurai Kamaraj University to become a part of the convocation address his most favorite teacher Rev. Iyadurai Solomon was on the dias. When he finished his lecture, Dr. Abdul Kalam bowed down in front of him and said, “Great dreams of dreamers are always transcended”.

His teacher in turn said in a choked voice, “You have not only attained my goals, Kalam, but you have eclipsed them”. Such a man was Kalam who excelled in everything that he did and made not only his teacher, but the whole nation proud. Since the beginning of his days, he was a very hardworking and diligent person. In his early childhood, he helped his family to earn livelihood along with the studies. Being very intelligent and promising, he started his career and life soon.

He saw a lot of hardships on his way to success. There was a time when his sister sold her jewelry to pay his college fees. After completing his graduation, he joined the defense department to serve the nation. And from there the journey of the famous scientist started to a never-ending tale of success. He was one of the various scientists in India who worked for the development of nuclear power. For his work, he also earned various awards and prizes.

The Missile Man of India and the former president of the world’s largest democracy, Dr A P J Abdul Kalam, was one of the most successful and inspiring leaders of independent India. He taught the youth to not only handle success but also how to handle failures. He said that the management of the failure is very important as there will be problems and failures in whatever one does. According to him, learning leads to creativity, creativity leads to thinking, thinking provides knowledge and knowledge makes you successful. The ones who dare to dream the impossible are the ones who break the chains of all the human limitations. Although being from a science background, he also gave equal importance to all the courses of study and profession and he believed that one who can think and work beyond the imaginations are the ones who achieve the actual success in life. 1. Plan, Prepare, Proceed

Once you have set a goal, whether it is to score a certain percentage, rank higher in your class or clear an examination in the first attempt, always make a plan.

The next step is to prepare yourself as per the plan. And once you are ready with that strong intention, nothing can stop you!

As the Wings of Fire author writes - Desire, when it stems from the heart and spirit, when it is pure and intense, possesses awesome electromagnetic energy.

2. Have a Clear Vision

We know what we want to become. But do we have a process envisioned in our minds? If not, then we most certainly must. Your dream must not look like a blurry vision on a rainy day outside your window. It must be crystal clear to you.

Once you have clarity over the process, you have a set course of actions to take. You create a strategy and work towards it. You know how many miles you have covered and how many more are still left to achieve your dream.

Dr Kalam says, “A dream is not that which you see while slee ping. It is something that does not let you sleep .”

3. If You Fail, Never Give Up.

Have you ever been called to the first bench by your teacher for sitting in the last bench and dreaming away? Dr Kalam would have taken your side had he been in your class.

Truly, “If you want to shine like a sun, first burn like a sun.”

6. Believe and Become

All of us have doubted our capabilities at some point of time. We have thought we really can never get that medal or that trophy or, can never score beyond this. What are we doing here? We are undermining ourselves and telling ourselves we are not the ones who can believe and become.

You know what Kalam would have told us?

He would have said, “ Be active! Take on responsibility! Work for the things you believe in. If you do not, you are surrendering your fate to others .”

7. Be Consistent and Persevere

Did you know Kalam’s first major project at ISRO failed in its first launch in 1979? And yet we know him as the Missile Man today.

It is normal to feel sad if you did not get what you aimed for. But you can rest assured that if you are persistent and single-mindedly dedicated towards your goal, you will eventually succeed.

Dr APJ Abdul Kalam was the son of a boat owner who sold newspapers as a child to help his family. His dedication and passion that led to his success, not only allowed him to serve his family later but his entire nation.

In 1998, he formulated the Technology Vision 2020 that aimed to make India a developed nation in 20 years.

One can recall him saying, “I am not handsome but I can give my hand to someone who needs help. ”

I have three visions for India. In 3000 years of our history people from all over the world have come and invaded us, captured our lands, conquered our minds. From Alexander onwards the Greeks, the Turks, the Moguls, the Portuguese, the British, the French, the Dutch, all of them came and looted us, took over what was ours. Yet we have not done this to any other nation.

We have not conquered anyone. We have not grabbed their land, their culture and their history and tried to enforce our way of life on them. Why? Because we respect the freedom of others. That is why my FIRST VISION is that of FREEDOM. I believe that India got its first vision of this in 1857, when we started the war of Independence. It is this freedom that we must protect and nurture and build on. If we are not free, no one will respect us.

We have 10 percent growth rate in most areas. Our poverty levels are falling. Our achievements are being globally recognised today. Yet we lack the self-confidence to see ourselves as a developed nation, self-reliant and self-assured. Isn’t this incorrect? MY SECOND VISION for India is DEVELOPMENT. For fifty years we have been a developing nation. It is time we see ourselves as a developed nation. We are among top five nations in the world in terms of GDP.

I have a THIRD VISION. India must stand up to the world. Because I believe that unless India stands up to the world, no one will respect us. Only strength respects strength. We must be strong not only as a military power but also as an economic power. Both must go hand-in-hand. My good fortune was to have worked with three great minds. Dr.Vikram Sarabhai, of the Dept. of Space, Professor Satish Dhawan, who succeeded him and Dr. Brahm Prakash, father of nuclear material. I was lucky to have worked with all three of them closely and consider this the great opportunity of my life.

I was in Hyderabad giving this lecture, when a 14 year-old girl asked me for my autograph. I asked her what her goal in life is. She replied: I want to live in a developed India. For her, you and I will have to build this developed India. You must proclaim India is not an underdeveloped nation; it is a highly developed nation.

Good Morning/ Afternoon/ Evening to each and everyone present here today. The Foundation of major educative discoveries and research is embedded in the history of India. There are many personalities in India who have dedicated their lives to the educative fields and achieved great heights in the same. In the journey of science and technology, India grew extensively in the last decades when APJ Abdul Kalam was active. The former President of India and popularly recognised as the “Missile Man of India”, Kalam was the man of the people and probably one of the most loved leaders in the subcontinent.

It would be an understatement to just recognise him as a man who was a beloved President of the nation. He was so much more than just that. Today, I aim to discuss the influential and inspirational life of Dr Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam and pay him tribute by commemorating his contributions to this country.

Born and brought up in a poverty-stricken family of Tamil Muslims that resided in Rameshwaram. His father was a boat owner and imam of a local Mosque while his mother happened a housemaker. He was the youngest of five siblings, four brothers and a sister. It is amusing how a child born in such an underprivileged and minority community rose to fame and name by all right means and for the right reasons.

He even had to sell newspapers in his childhood to meet ends with the general expenses of his family. He is for sure an exemplary personality. Kalam was never an academic topper but always a diligent student who was curious to learn and know about the world, science, and mathematics. His education mainly proceeded based on scholarships, and his constant efforts led him to graduate in Physics, further majoring in Aerospace Engineering at the postgraduate level.

So far, it might seem that Kalam got what he wanted, but one must know that he always wanted to be a fighter pilot. His dreams were shattered when he could not make the list and narrowly missed selection. There were only eight positions in the Indian Air Force, but Kalam was the ninth to qualify. This could have been a huge setback to Kalam but a person destined to rise and radiate his intellect can never fall. He proceeded his career as a scientist in the Aeronautical Development Establishment of the Defence Research and Development Organisation, which we also acknowledge as DRDO.

Initially, he designed a hovercraft, but dissatisfaction followed as he did not self-condone his work because of his lack of interest. Soon, in 1969, he was transferred to the Indian Space Research Organisation or ISRO, as we call it. Do you remember Rohini? Yes, the successful earth-orbiting satellite. Kalam was the Satellite Launch Vehicle -III project director who deployed them. He has been working on the project of expandable satellites since 1965 but received approval from the government in 69. He even contributed to the development of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle.

The Union Council of Ministers disapproved of his Project Devil and Project Valiant but PM Indira Gandhi secretly funded him. While the two projects were discontinued before their completion, they eventually proved helpful in the development of Missile Prithvi. Defence Minister, R. Venkataraman supported Kalam for the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme where he was appointed Chief Executive. This project proved lethal as Kalam and his team developed Prithvi and other ballistic missiles under the same. He surely was the “Missile Man of India” who played a crucial role in the development of the Pokhran-II nuclear bomb tests by the Indian Army .

His developments and contributions are not limited to astronomical science but also extend to India’s Defence Scheme when he served as Chief Scientific Adviser to the Prime Minister and Secretary of the Defence Research and Development Organisation under the Ministry of Defence. But are you aware that Kalam also has a medical contribution under his name? Yes, he and cardiologist Soma Raju developed the Kalam-Raju Stent, which was a low-cost coronary stent, and later, they designed the Kalam-Raju Tablet, which proved helpful for rural area health care.

He was potentially the most loved President of all time. He was backed by the Bhartiya Janta Party and allied parties under the National Democratic Alliance, Telugu Desam Party, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Bahujan Samaj Party, Bahujan Samaj Party, and even Indian National Congress for his Presidential Candidature. He won the elections and was the 11th President of India. It was an easy victory for the Bharat Ratna recipient. Abdul Kalam supported the idea of a Uniform Civil Code and backed the conviction of the rapist of a 14-year-old girl. He was criticised for failing to decide upon 20 other mercy pleas he received in his tenure. His term was a successful one, and on multiple occasions, the public expressed their wish for him to proceed with another tenure as the President. However, things never worked out in that direction.

Dr Kalam was always grateful for the love he received. He was appreciated for his books and advocated for India to become a knowledge superpower. His books are vivid evidence of his rational ideologies. He was widely honoured. Imagine, he received seven honorary doctorates from 40 universities! There is an island in Odisha named after him, Parliament road in New Delhi is now known as Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Road since August 2015, and in 2018, the Botanical Survey of India named a new plant species, Drypetes kalamii after him. His name continues to thrive even after his unfortunate demise due to a cardiac arrest in 2015. His body was laid to rest with complete state honours post his death. He might not be alive and around, but he still lives in the hearts of Indians and will forever be.

His unmatchable diligence changed the path of his life. He was put into this world as a child who had to strive even to achieve the little amenities of life, but he fought against all the problems with the weapon of education. He rose above everything and all setbacks to leave an unwashable imprint on people’s minds. If one reminisces about the greatest man to have existed in India, one can never move past Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, such is his legacy!

In 2002-2007 Dr. Kalam served as the 11th president of India and earned the title of people’s president.

Rajinikanth

Born as Shivaji Rao Gaekwad in 1950, on December 12, Banglore, Karnataka . Rajinikanth was the youngest of all his siblings and his father was a police constable. He faced a lot of challenges and lost his mother at a young age.

Rajinikanth had to work various odd jobs to support his family because of his weak financial status.
His life’s turning point started with his entry into the Tamil film industry where his iconic presence and some hit films turned the scenario upside down.

Students eloquently shared insights into Dr Kalam’s pioneering contributions to India’s research and development in science, particularly his role in advancing the nation’s missile and space programmes. Through engaging presentations and speeches, the students apprised their peers of Dr Kalam’s remarkable achievements and enduring legacy. They recounted his work on the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme and his pivotal role in developing India’s first satellite launch vehicle, among other ground-breaking accomplishments. The assembly not only celebrated Dr Kalam’s scientific contributions but also emphasised his deep love for children and education.
