Student Guides and Templates

On this page we provide a bunch of writing tips, guidelines and templates for you. These guidelines should help you to structure reports and theses and give nice oral presentations. Hence we recommend you to read the guidelines before starting to write or preparing a talk. However, following all the guidelines is neither a necessary nor a sufficient condition to get a good grade, or even to pass the respective module.

There are three different repositories. The first repository contains guidelines for reports, theses and oral presentations.  The other two repositories contain templates for reports and theses. You can find the templates on our github repository or you can directly download them using buttons below.

Student Guide

In the student guide you can find helpful tips and information to consider when writing a report, a thesis or giving an oral presentation. It includes formal aspects (e.g. page limits, correct citations, ...) but also tips for better writing.

Report Template

The report template can be used as a template for lab, seminar and project groups reports. Some modules might require you to use exactly this template, without alterations.

Thesis Template

The thesis template can be used as a template for bachelor and master theses. You may use it as is, or change it to your liking.

Preparation of the Final Thesis

The mathematics degree programs conclude with a Bachelor's or Master's thesis, in which independent work on a mathematical topic is to be demonstrated. The Examination Board has compiled the most important requirements for theses and some assessment criteria as guidelines.

  • Please read the document carefully before you register your thesis.
  • When registering the thesis, you confirm with your signature that you have taken note of the requirements in the document.

The teacher training programs also end with a final thesis. This can be completed in the subject mathematics.

Rules for Theses in the Subject-Specific Study Programs

Here you will find the regulations for registering and submitting final theses that apply to both mathematics programs. Specific deadlines and rules are listed under the respective degree program.

As a rule, students find a supervisor for their thesis on their own initiative.

  • Every professor of mathematics in Bonn can of course assign topics for theses.
  • Many other doctoral lecturers at Bonn Mathematics have been appointed by the Examination Board to supervise theses. You can enquire about this with the person concerned.
  • One of the two reviewers must always be a professor of mathematics at Bonn University.
  • If you have not found a supervisor yourself, you can also have one assigned to you by the Examination Board . In this case, please contact the Bachelor-Master Office Mathematics.

The thesis must be registered using the form Registration of the Thesis .The form must be signed by both you and the supervisor of the thesis.

  • The form must state the topic of the thesis and your first supervisor.
  • You also confirm that you have taken note of the requirements for the final theses of your degree program.
  • At the same time, you will be registered for the seminar accompanying your thesis.
  • The registration form must be submitted to the Bachelor-Master Office Mathematics immediately after the topic has been assigned and within four weeks of the supervisor's signature.
  • If the registration form is received in February or August, the thesis can still be assessed in the semester in which it is submitted.
  • For the accompanying thesis seminar you earn 6 credit points. It is registered for the semester in which your thesis is due for submission.
  • During the time you are working on your thesis, there are usually three presentations in the thesis seminar on the topic of the thesis and the results achieved.
  • The examination of the thesis seminar consists of a graded (final) presentation, which should be held shortly before or shortly after the submission of the thesis.
  • The day on which you give the graded presentation is an examination date and is therefore relevant for your degree.
  • Therefore, please make sure that the presentation takes place before the end of the semester in which you wish to graduate.
  • The deadline for submitting your thesis is calculated from the signature date of your supervisor plus the working time.
  • You can see the submission date of your thesis in BASIS.
  • The deadline for submitting your thesis is strict. If you submit the thesis after this date, it will be failed.
  • Please note that you are responsible for meeting the submission deadline. Your supervisors are not necessarily aware of your submission deadline, and in no case could they change the deadline for you, as this is set by the examination regulations.
  • In the event of illness , the deadline can be extended by up to six weeks.

The thesis must be submitted on time in the required number of copies together with the form Submission of the Thesis at the Bachelor-Master Office Mathematics . On the submission form, you confirm that you have written the paper independently and have not used any sources or aids other than those specified and that you have indicated any quotations.

Requirements:

  • DIN A4, printed on both sides, with cover page
  • in a bound version (no spiral bindings please!)
  • If programming code or similar is available, it must be attached to each copy of the work on a CD or a USB stick that is as flat as possible (do not send it by e-mail). The CD or stick must be glued to the last page of a copy.
  • A single copy of the submission form must be submitted separately.

Options for submitting the thesis:

  • personal delivery during office hours
  • personal delivery after making an appointment outside office hours
  • by post to the Bachelor-Master Office Mathematics The date of the postmark is decisive for the submission.

The thesis is evaluated by two assessors.

  • The first assessor is the person who provided the topic of the thesis.
  • The second assessor must be proposed by you when you submit your thesis. You are therefore responsible for finding a suitable second reviewer. On request, the supervisor can of course help you with this.
  • Both reviewers must be noted on the title page of the thesis (see templates for the title page).

As a rule, the candidate is notified of the thesis' evaluation six to eight weeks after the submission date.

Bachelor's Thesis (B.Sc. Mathematik)

  • The topic of the Bachelor's thesis is usually assigned towards the end of the fifth semester.
  • You need to have earned at leat 90 credit points in order to register the Bachelor's thesis.

The working period of a Bachelor's thesis is five months.

  • The Bachelor's thesis is estimated to require a workload of 360 hours.
  • Therefore it earns 12 credit points.

The text part of the Bachelor's thesis must be between 5 and 50 pages long.

  • Deviations from this require the approval of the Examination Board.
  • In this case, please obtain the consent of both your advisors.
  • Then send an application by e-mail to the Bachelor-Master Office Mathematics .

The language of the Bachelor's degree program is German. You can write your Bachelor's thesis in English if

  • your supervisor agrees with it and
  • the thesis contains a summary in German.

There is a coursework for the Bachelor's thesis seminar, the training in subject-specific literature research . It will be noted in BASIS when you register your Bachelor's thesis and it is a prerequisite for passing the Bachelor's thesis seminar.

The training courses are offered by the University and State Library in the form of a one-off two-hour course. The course imparts knowledge that is very useful for academic work, especially when writing a Bachelor's thesis, for example the use of the relevant academic online archives.

  • The courses are held in the MNL departmental library in the training room on the 1st floor.
  • Usually three dates are offered every semester, each on a Monday or Wednesday from 16.15 to 18.00 hrs.
  • You can register for a date via an online form.

After you have taken part in a course, we will enter the coursework as passed in BASIS.

  • You must complete this training shortly before or during the time you are working on your Bachelor's thesis.

The title page of your Bachelor's thesis must be agreed with your supervisor.

  • In particular, make sure that you name the correct institute to which your supervisor belongs.
  • Please use our LaTeX-template for the title page of your Bachelor's thesis.

The submission deadline for the Bachelor's thesis is 5 months after the date on which the supervisor signed the application.

  • Three copies of the Bachelor's thesis must be submitted.

Master's Thesis (M.Sc. Mathematics)

  • The topic of the Master's thesis is usually assigned towards the end of the second semester.
  • You need to have earned at leat 30 credit points in order to register the Master's thesis.

The working period of a Master's thesis is twelve months.

  • The Master's thesis is estimated to require a workload of 900 hours.
  • Therefore it earns 30 credit points.

The text part of the Master's thesis must be between 10 and 100 pages long.

The language of the Master's degree program is English. You can write your Master's thesis in German if

  • the thesis contains a summary in English.

The title page of your Master's thesis must be agreed with your supervisor.

  • Please use our LaTeX-template for the title page of your Master's thesis.

The submission deadline for the Master's thesis is 12 months after the date on which the supervisor signed the application.

  • Four copies of the Master's thesis must be submitted. One copy will be made available to the Mathematics Library.

If you would like to apply for a PhD position at BIGS Mathematics you should find out about the application process at the beginning of the third Master's semester.

Reimbursement of the Printing Costs for the Thesis

The printing costs for the required copies of your thesis can be reimbursed upon application. This also applies to theses in the teacher training programs that were written in mathematics.

  • Please fill out the application form and hand it in at the Bachelor-Master Office Mathematics.
  • The enclosed original receipt must show the number of copies printed.
  • Please attach the receipts to the separately printed page 2 of the form using a glue stick.

Please submit the form promptly, as the original receipts are only valid for 6 months.

Your thesis and accompanying seminar

Have you already completed most of your degree programme? Congratulations! On this page you will find all the information you need about your Bachelor's or Master's thesis.

1. Schedule

Bachelor's and Master's thesis projects can be started at any time.

The only prerequisite for the Bachelor's thesis project is that you have successfully completed the Projektgruppe. The prerequisite for the Master's thesis project (according to the examination regulations of 2023) is that you have acquired at least 60 ETCS in your Master's programme.

The maximum time you can work on your thesis is:

  • five months in the Bachelor's programmes;
  • six months in the full-time Master's programmes;
  • nine months in the part-time Master's programmes.

This means that the thesis project must be registered five (Bachelor's) or six or nine (Master's) months before the end of the nominal duration of your programme in order to be able to graduate within the nominal duration.

Upon reasoned request to the examination board, using this form , the time you can work on the thesis can be extended by a maximum of six weeks.

2. Topic and Supervision

To obtain a topic for your thesis, please contact a lecturer whose course(s) you took, especially Projektgruppen, seminars or labs. If you have contacted several lecturers without success, please contact the examinations office .

In principle, it is also possible to write your thesis outside the Institute of Computer Science, for example in a company or at another research institute. You can also suggest a topic for your thesis yourself. However, you always need at least one examiner within the institute who is willing to (co-)supervise and grade your thesis. Contact potential examiners in good time.

If the other examiner is not a lecturer at the Institute of Computer Science, (s)he must still fulfil the requirements according to our examination regulations. The external examiner should therefore contact the chairperson of the examination board . The chairperson will then decide, after reviewing the potential examiner's qualifications and possibly an interview, whether an appointment as examiner is possible.

3. Registration

Once you have been assigned a topic, the thesis must be registered immediately . All eligible examiners at the institute have a form for this purpose. The examiners and the student (you) must sign this form. Then you submit the form to the examinations office .

The chair of the examination board then checks whether the topic and the examiners fulfil the requirements of the examination regulations. The chair confirms both the examiners and the topic by signing the form. Only then is the submission deadline entered in BASIS and the student (you) will find the submission deadline as the examination date under the examinations for which you are registered.

4. Application for further studies

If you would like to enrol in one of our Master's degree programmes following your Bachelor's thesis, you must apply before submitting your Bachelor's thesis . Please note the application deadlines !

5. Submission

At least 10 days before your submission deadline, please send an e-mail to  [email protected] stating your surname, first name, matriculation number, the title of the thesis, the names of the examiners, the deadline and, if you plan to submit your thesis before the deadline, the planned submission date.

Achtung:  Only mails that are sent from your university mail address ([email protected]) will be processed.

With the reply email you will receive a link to a Sciebo folder to which you must upload your work as a PDF file by the deadline. Additional files, if any, must be uploaded in a ZIP archive.

In addition, successful submission includes the submission of the declaration of authorship , with which you assure that you wrote the submitted work by yourself. You must make sure that the examinations office receives the declaration with your original signature (on paper, not a scan) within seven days after you uploaded your thesis.

As soon as the submission deadline has passed or the declaration of authorship has been received, the submission link will be deleted. Only then will your work be sent to the examiners for assessment.

If the files are not uploaded on time or if the examination office does not receive the declaration of authorship on time, the thesis project is deemed to have been failed.

6. Presentation

Finally, you must give a presentation on your Bachelor's thesis in the accompanying seminar. You do not need to register for the seminar. You simply need to arrange a date and a time with your examiners. The presentation should take place shortly before or shortly after the submission of the thesis, in the same semester.

Table of Contents

Introduction talk and final presentation, template for the thesis, checklist for your thesis, a note on feedback on drafts, bachelor and master thesis.

This website gives an overview and information on how to write a bachelor's or master's thesis in our group. Always check the institute's website for questions on the formal procedures.

  • If the general topic is approved we meet to discuss the details and determine the second examiner (Prof. Mutzel is the first examiner). Usually, you will be additionally advised by a member of the team.
  • the title of the thesis
  • a very brief introduction of the topic (including references to the most relevant literature)
  • the goals of the thesis
  • the brief description of the ideas about how the goals can be achieved
  • a first outline of the structure of the thesis (optional)
  • After you hand in the exposé you can officially start. To this end, you need to fill out the registration form which will be provided to you at this point. After you and the examiners sign the form and it is sent to the examination office the due date will be available on the basis website.
  • If you are writing a master thesis, you need to do an introduction presentation, see below for details.
  • During your time writing your thesis you have to regularly attend the mandatory bachelor master seminar . Please check for new dates regularly. They can be found here .
  • After finishing your thesis, you hand it in at the examination office. We as a chair are not involved in this final step. Check the institutes website for information . The examination office will send your thesis to your examiners.
  • Shortly after handing in, you can do your final presentation, see below for details.
  • Do I have to register in BASIS for anything? : You do not have to register in BASIS for thesis related modules: Neither for the thesis itself nor for the seminar. The thesis will appear automatically in your records after the registration form got processed (your second examiner might not be displayed, this is normal).
  • How do I hand in the thesis? : See one of the last bullet points in the procedure overview above.
  • Do I have to hand in code? : As long as you use the git-repo supplied by us, there is no need for you to submit your code in any additional form with your thesis.
  • Do I have to attend BaMa-talks in German, if I do not understand German? : No, as there is little benefit for you, you do not have to attend talks in a language you do not speak.
  • Is there a minimum / maximum number of pages for my thesis? There might be one. Check your current “Bachelor Prüfungsordnung” / “Master Examination Regulation”.

For bachelor thesis:

  • Only a final presentation of 30 minutes + 15 minutes discussion and questions

For master thesis:

  • Introduction talk of 30 minutes + 15 minutes discussion, and
  • A final presentation of 45 minutes + 15 minutes discussion and questions

After discussing the date for your presentation, your advisor will add it to our schedule .

Tips for the presentation

  • Seletion of content: not everything you have done can be presented. It is necessary to select the topics to be presented.
  • Target audience: Note that the target group of your presentation are NOT your professor(s) or the reviewers; every student specialized in algorithmics should be able to follow your talk (your colleagues)
  • Make sure you at least mention related work and highlight what has already been done in the field of your thesis and what has been done / added by you
  • Put the right amount of content on each slide. On average about one slide per 1.5 to 2 minutes talk.
  • Use examples and figures to explain complicated content.
  • Use colors for highlighting.
  • Train your presentation. It's a good idea to present to, e.g., a friend.
  • Read and follow the more detailed guidelines here .

Your advisor will provide you a latex template.

For bibliography guidelines see here .

This list is far from complete and its points should be familiar to you, but we want to stress, that all of those points have an impact on your final grade.

  • Spellcheck your thesis (eg. Duden or grammerly ) and/or use a spell checker in your latex editor!
  • Double check your grammar
  • Use precise wording and no informal speech
  • Write in passive (or use the scientific “we”, do not mix), refrain from using “I” (resp. “ich”)
  • Structure your thesis, each chapter and each section in a good and reasonable manner. Write short introductions for each chapter / section.

If you get feedback from your supervisor on drafts of your thesis, neither does the feedback claim to be complete, nor is it meant to be. It is your task to write a thesis fulfilling general scientific and topic specific requirements, you should have internalized from your studies up to this point.

Publishing online on bonndoc

Preliminary considerations

  • Discuss the planned online publication with your doctoral supervisor and, for example, clarify whether an embargo period is necessary. In the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and the Faculty of Agriculture, you will need written consent from your doctoral supervisor (Granted via corresponding forms from the doctoral office. In the case of the Faculty of Math. and Nat. Sciences, you must have Form 2 signed and then submit it to the doctoral office, otherwise we will not receive permission for online publication. ).
  • If you want your thesis to be subject to an embargo period, please read our information on embargo periods .
  • If your doctoral thesis includes (journal) articles , you will first need to check in what form online publication is possible. You can find more information on our web page on cumulative doctoral theses .
  • Please take note of our contractual terms and conditions and legal information (only available in German).
  • Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions, although you should be aware that we are unable to provide legal advice.

Getting your file(s) ready

  • Please check whether your  title page and the following page are complete and match the latest template used by your faculty . Before publishing, you may need to enter the date of your oral examination, update the year of publication (i.e. the year of the online publication on bonndoc) and/or add the names of more reviewers.
  • For data protection reasons, we recommend removing your curriculum vitae if one is included (you are welcome to leave in a list of your academic publications that follows your curriculum vitae).
  • Convert the file(s) for your doctoral thesis into PDF format . Your file(s) must not have any PDF security restrictions, i.e. they cannot be password- or copy-protected. Additional materials and research data can also be published in other file formats.
  • Send your file(s) as a download link (e.g. via sciebo ) or email attachment (max. 10 MB) to [email protected] so that other formal aspects and potential problems can be checked out. We will give you feedback. For doctorates at the Faculty of Arts , please also send a copy of the printing permission (imprimatur).

Registering for online publication

  • Please register your doctoral thesis for publication using our online form (only available in German. By clicking on the field names you get a translation and help texts in English ).
  • You will need to prepare one or more abstracts and some keywords . We require at least one abstract in the same language as the thesis, although abstracts in other languages are welcome too. The abstracts can be up to one A4 page long.
  • Please read the declaration that is displayed below the form carefully (only available in German). After submitting the form, you have the option of downloading the declaration as a PDF file for your records.
  • Unless you have already done so, please send us the final file(s) for publication as a download link (e.g. via sciebo ) or email attachment (max. 10 MB) to [email protected] after you have registered.

PLEASE NOTE: From 2024, printed copies for the USL are not required

From the year of publication 2024, i.e. for all publications from 1 January 2024, printed copies for the USL are no longer required if you publish online on the bonndoc publication server, as the USL has updated and modernized its collection guidelines.

However, some faculties still require you to print one or more copies for other bodies, e.g. for your institute library or doctoral office, despite online publication. The form and content of the printed and electronic version should be identical (except for personal data, if relevant). Therefore, please wait until we have checked your file for online publication before printing. (If you need tips for printing these copies, you can follow the printing requirements on the habilitation theses page in step 2).

Our dissertations department team will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Publishing your doctoral thesis

As soon as we have all the documents we need, we will take care of everything else. We will obtain permission to publish from your doctoral office and will publish your doctoral thesis on bonndoc once this has been granted. After that, we will send the corresponding confirmation of publication straight to your doctoral office. We will keep you informed via email of all the steps and publication via bonndoc.

Final steps

You have now fulfilled your publication obligations vis-à-vis the USL and can obtain your certificate from your doctoral office provided that you have done everything else required by the doctoral office.

Your online thesis will be cataloged so that it can be found in library catalogs such as bonnus and that of the German National Library, which will also put it into long-term archiving.

Would you like to view published doctoral theses?

You can view all doctoral theses that have already been published online in the bonndoc section for the respective faculty. First select the faculty and then click on the "E-Dissertationen" collection.

Design of the PDF file

Each faculty has its own rules regarding formal design. These web pages have templates for you to download:

  • Faculty of Protestant Theology
  • Faculty of Catholic Theology: not available online unfortunately; please ask the doctoral office
  • Faculty of Agriculture: not available online unfortunately; please ask the doctoral office
  • Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences
  • Dr. med/Dr. med. dent.
  • Faculty of Arts (the download is called "Gestaltungsvorschriften für die Pflichtexemplare")
  • Faculty of Law and Economics (the downloads are called "Vorgaben Dissertationsexemplare")

Please read the following explanatory notes:

  • The location to be included on the title page must be your official place of birth (and not, for instance, the town where you live or another place with links to you).
  • For the Faculty of Agriculture, Medicine, Arts and Law/Economics:  the year on the title page must be the year of publication (i.e. the year the work is published online on bonndoc).
  • For the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences:  the year on the title page must be the year the thesis was originally submitted to the doctoral office for review; the year of publication (i.e. the year the work is published online on bonndoc) must be entered on the page with the reviewers’ information.

The title page of your doctoral thesis as described above must be included in your PDF file, usually as the first page. This is followed by another page with details of your reviewers , the day you completed your doctorate and any other relevant information. The specific requirements for the title page and the following page vary from faculty to faculty (see previous question ).

However, if you wish, you can also place a freely designed cover as the first page before the title page, which you can also use as a book cover in the printed copies (e.g. for your institute library and your doctoral office). This cover will be displayed as a preview image on bonndoc. You can find an example here .

Exception:  for doctoral theses in the Faculty of Medicine (Dr. med./Dr. med. dent.), you are not free to choose your own design and may not use a self-designed cover.

Although neither the central administration nor University Communications have any objections in this regard, the design and look of your thesis should always be agreed with your faculty. You can find information on how to use the logo correctly on the University of Bonn’s corporate design web page .

No. PDF files with security restrictions such as passwords, copy protection or blocks on printing are not permitted. We will gladly explain why:

  • bonndoc is an open-access publication server, meaning that we only accept data without any usage restrictions. All documents should be as accessible as possible for all readers, and protective settings such as a block on copying or printing present an obstacle in this regard.
  • The long-term archiving of all files must be guaranteed. A few years or decades down the line, we or the German National Library may be required to convert the files into other formats due to advances in technology. We can only do this if the documents have no security settings.
  • The text has to be extractable in order to be incorporated into our full-text search and to enable your doctoral thesis to be assigned to relevant topics and given keywords in an automated process at the German National Library.

Completing the online form

We recommend using special characters and formatting sparingly. If they are essential, however, please use HTML.

HTML (HyperText Markup Language) describes the content and layout of a page to be published on the Internet. Within the document, HTML instructions (“tags”) go inside angle brackets. Web browsers then interpret the HTML texts and display them correctly.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. You can also find more information and help with HTML online.

Here are a few useful tags if you want to make certain text in your abstract or title bold ,  italic ,  underlined , etc.:

The keywords that you provide for your work yourself by entering them on the online form are put on the Internet as so-called metadata. This makes it easier to do a targeted search for them using various online search engines.

Your keywords should be precise, concise and common in the relevant field. It may help to consider what search terms might be used by other researchers interested in the topics covered by your doctoral thesis. It also makes sense to pick keywords that you are not already using in the title of your work.

We recommend providing at least five keywords. You can enter them in German or English on our registration form (ideally, you will do both).

As the author, you can decide what other people are allowed to do with your work. Creative Commons (“CC”) licenses are frequently used for open-access digital publishing. These are available on bonndoc for your publications. They are a set of predefined licenses featuring various restrictions. You can find out more about Creative Commons licenses and background information on the Open Access Service Center page about licenses .

The USL Bonn recommends using a  “CC-BY” license wherever possible (i.e. reuse allowed if the author is credited). This guarantees the greatest scope for reuse, something that is desirable from a research policy perspective.

Creative Commons licenses are granted voluntarily. If you do not choose a Creative Commons license, your doctoral thesis will be published under a general copyright notice .

You can pick your chosen license in our online form for registering your doctoral thesis (see our step-by-step guide to online publication toward the top of this page).

N.B.: a Creative Commons license can only be granted for cumulative doctoral theses or those including (journal) articles if all the publications that it contains have also been published in an open-access format under a corresponding Creative Commons license. Otherwise, granting a Creative Commons license for these kinds of doctoral thesis is not recommended and the default setting "In Copyright" should be used.

We are seeing very rare instances of a technical fault at the moment, particularly in Google Chrome, that is preventing the form from being submitted. We are working on a solution. Should you experience this problem, please deactivate browser plug-ins such as translators or use a different web browser to complete the form.

Please do not fill in the form again. Instead, send us your desired changes by email and we will update your registration in our system.

General questions about publishing online on bonndoc

You will be able to request an embargo period for your doctoral thesis on bonndoc under certain circumstances. For instance, this may be necessary if parts of your work are yet to be published in academic journals.

  • Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences:  in justified exceptional cases, the doctoral board can grant an embargo period of up to one year for the electronic version of the doctoral thesis upon request by the doctoral student and supervisor. The doctoral board can approve an extension of this period in special exceptional cases if another request is made.
  • Faculty of Agriculture:  doctoral theses published online can be embargoed for up to one year in exceptional cases. The doctoral students concerned make their request to the dean of their faculty in consultation with their doctoral supervisor.
  • Faculty of Medicine:  an embargo period of up to two years can be granted for the data carriers that are accessible online. To obtain this, the doctoral student and first supervisor will have to submit a joint written request to the doctoral office, stating the reasons. An embargo period of more than two years can only be requested from the doctoral board, stating the reasons.
  • All other faculties:  although there are no specific rules on embargo periods, please ask your doctoral office whether you might be able to request one in an exceptional case.

A request does not usually have to meet any formal requirements. Please contact your doctoral office directly for more information on how and where to make your request.

The doctoral office will notify the dissertations department at the USL Bonn about any embargo periods that have been approved. Even if your publication is currently embargoed, you will still have met the criteria for completing your doctorate, meaning that you do not have to wait until the end of the embargo period to obtain your certificate.

As well as making your request to the doctoral/dean’s office, please also let us know that you are planning an embargo so that we can make the necessary preparations in good time. To do this, select “Sperre (Embargo) wurde/wird im Dekanat beantragt” (“Embargo has been/is being requested from the dean’s office”) in our registration form for publishing online (alternatively, email us at [email protected] if you do not opt for an embargo until after you have submitted the form).

Yes. However, how exactly additional materials can and should be published varies from case to case. Materials that form an integral part of your doctoral thesis and that are enclosed with the printed copies, e.g. on a CD/DVD, generally have to be published along with the electronic version too. They can be published on our publication server bonndoc directly in many cases. If research data is involved that other researchers can continue working on, however, it is often a good idea to publish it elsewhere, e.g. in specific research data repositories such as bonndata.

Please note that publishing additional materials/research data for a doctoral thesis on personal websites or your department’s website should be avoided as this will not guarantee their long-term availability.

We would be happy to advise you and will refer you on to the Research Data Service Center at the University of Bonn if necessary.

You can find further information on publishing and archiving research data on the center’s pages:

Publishing and archiving research data (accessible only in the university network)

Research data repository bonndata

Once the thesis is on the server, it can no longer be removed from there or modified for legal and integrity reasons.

A doctoral thesis can only be embargoed retrospectively—both on the bonndoc publication server and on the German National Library’s server—in exceptional cases (in the event of e.g. problems with patent procedures, ongoing legal proceedings involving plagiarism, retrospective revocation of a doctorate, unforeseeable problems with a publisher that also published the thesis) and with special permission from the dean’s office for your faculty. In some cases, an amended version of the thesis can be uploaded that is linked to from the embargoed publication.

Well before your work is published, therefore, you should clarify all details (not least with your doctoral supervisor), e.g. whether an embargo period is necessary due to upcoming publications or patent applications.

Although we endeavor to put doctoral theses online as quickly as possible, processing times vary considerably. How long a thesis will take to process depends on numerous factors including:

  • How complete your documentation is when you submit
  • How soon we receive permission for publishing online from your doctoral office

As soon as we have received all the correct and complete documents, we can finalize the publication within a few days.

Tip: please also think about submitting any forms from the doctoral office there once they are complete (particularly the form 2 on which your doctoral supervisor grants their consent to publishing online if you are with the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences). Otherwise, the doctoral office will not allow us to publish and the process will be delayed.

The USL Bonn does not have any objections in this regard, as you only grant us a simple right of use for publication via bonndoc. All other rights remain with you, so you can use your thesis at any time and publish it elsewhere. However, the various publishers have differing views on the matter. Although some view publication online as additional advertising, others are categorically against digital publication of the full text because they tend to view it as competition.

If you sign a contract with a publisher, you must make sure that it will not adversely affect your original electronic publication on bonndoc and, if necessary, remove any clauses that give the publisher sole distribution rights. The electronic version on bonndoc cannot be removed or amended retrospectively.

Yes, of course! University of Bonn doctoral theses can be published subsequently online on bonndoc for free. If you have already used a publisher, however, you must first clarify with them whether your work is permitted to be published online.

Essentially, you can follow our step-by-step guide to online publication (see top of this page).

However, you should bear in mind the following:

  • The electronic version of your doctoral thesis must have the same content and form as the version that your faculty approved for publication. Please leave your file in the condition it was in originally when you published your thesis for the first time and do not change the year of publication.
  • We do not need permission from your faculty or your doctoral supervisor.
  • When you are registering via our online registration form, please select “ja” (yes) when you get to “Nachpublikation” (“Subsequent publication”).

Electronic publications on our server can be cited as shown in the example below. However, the exact form the citation will take depends on the citation style you want to use. Different fields tend to use different citation styles. What is important is that the URN link (or handle/DOI link) is always specified, as these are unchangeable persistent identifiers (see also “ What are URNs, Handles and DOIs? ”).

Last name, first name: title of thesis : subtitle, if there is one Location, year of publication Type of thesis, university URN link (you will find this on the page for your thesis on bonndoc)

Example:  Doe, John: Online publications at German universities : an empirical study. - Bonn, 2023. - Doctoral thesis, University of Bonn. Online edition on bonndoc: https://nbn-resolving.org/urn:nbn:de:hbz:5-XXXXX

URN (Uniform resource name), Handle or DOI (Digital object identifier) are to electronic documents what the ISBN is to books, i.e. they act as unchangeable persistent identifiers that are valid internationally.

Any thesis published on bonndoc is given a URN and a Handle, which are displayed on the publication’s bonndoc page in the “Zitierbare Links” (“Citable links”) box. Upon request, you can additionally receive a DOI for your thesis.

In principle, the URL displayed in the address bar of the browser (e.g. https://bonndoc.ulb.uni-bonn.de/...) only specifies the server on which it is stored, not the document itself. If the document is moved to a different server, this URL will change.

By contrast, the URN, Handle or DOI — as identifiers of the document itself — will remain unchanged. Should the document be relocated to another server one day, a system running in the background will update the destination linked to by the URN, Handle or DOI to the new location. This allows a logical and traceable citation method that will last for decades.

For this reason, you should never use the URL displayed in your web browser’s address bar when citing a publication on bonndoc — always use the URN or Handle link (or the DOI link, if applicable) instead (starting with https://nbn-resolving.org/..., https://hdl.handle.net/ or https://doi.org/...). Which of the  identifiers you use is up to you, as all are of equal value.

No. bonndoc does not support VG WORT’s standard payout scheme using the METIS process. However, you can participate in VG WORT’s special payout scheme if your texts can be copyrighted. Please see the information provided by VG WORT on academic publications and online texts for details (only available in German).

Uni-bonn msc thesis latex template.

  • Version: 0.1
  • Author: Tomas Cassanelli

License

The folowing TeX files contains all necessary packages and LaTeX structure for the Uni-Bonn master thesis. The main motivation for this project was the lack of resources and the messy structure for the current Uni-Bonn template. Please notice that the following document is not an official template for the Uni-Bonn master thesis.

The thesis is divided into:

  • Dedication (optional)
  • Declaration
  • Acknowledgements (optional)
  • ToC, LoF, LoT
  • Bibliography

In Chapter 1 I have written several examples on basic functions, not common for TeX users. If this is your first time using LaTeX, stop reading this and start looking at some introduction, e.g. the not so short introduction to LaTeX (worthwhile giving it a look even though you're an experienced user!).

Recommended LaTeX editor

Once you have installed LaTeX, I strongly encourage you to use Sublime, the editor is great and it works ridiculously good along TeX files. See LateXTools: A LaTeX Plugin for Sublime Text 2 and 3 .

I don't want to make a (LaTeX) package out of this template, I only want to point out what are the useful enviroments and a way to structure text that you'd like. In this sense I'll add some examples, check this webste once in a while and I'll have new stuff and ideas to improve your thesis!

  • Table example
  • Big table example
  • Tikz example
  • Image example
  • Python scaling figures
  • Minipage and placing the caption on the side

LaTeX useful links:

  • By far the best LaTeX forum TeX .
  • When you know the symbol but you don't know how is it called, then draw it with Detexify .
  • Tikz examples, TeXample .
  • LaTeX colors .

Doctoral theses in Open Access

Open Access means that your doctoral thesis is available for free without others having to pay for it. At the University of Bonn, the publication server bonndoc is suitable for this purpose. Financing of Open Access doctoral theses is possible via the publication funds of the University of Bonn.

The Open Access Service Center and the Dissertations department  will be happy to help you!

Publishing a doctoral thesis in Open Access?

The good news: Yes, it is possible to publish a doctoral thesis in open access! There are different ways:

  • Publication on the repository bonndoc of the University of Bonn. Here you will find instructions from the University's Dissertations department.
  • Publication of articles in an Open Access journal (for cumulative dissertations, in many cases you can also publish them on bonndoc).
  • Publication as an Open Access book in a publishing house
  • However, it is important to check your department's policies to ensure that your dissertation publication complies with all formal requirements. Therefore, please also note the general information on publishing your doctoral thesis from University of Bonn .

Funding an Open Access dissertation

There are various ways to fund the publication of your doctoral thesis in open access. Here are some options:

  • Use university resources and take advantage of our publication funds! You can easily apply for our publication fund for articles . Doctoral theses published as monographs are also funded under certain criteria .
  • Apply for scholarships and grants! For example, there are funding programs and foundations that support Open Access.
  • Negotiate with the publisher! Some publishers offer open access options. Check your publishing contract and the option to publish for a second time .

Information & Best Practices

Exchange and visibility are especially important for PhD students. At the same time, open access publication during the writing process is still not very common, especially for monographs.

But there are options. A good example is the project "Open PhD Thesis" ("Offene Doktorarbeit"): For the first time, a dissertation was published directly and immediately during the writing process for everyone, freely accessible at any time, under a free license (CC-BY-SA).

Division of Biology and Medicine

Brown center for biomedical informatics, master of science in health informatics.

A graduate degree program that blends theoretical foundations with real-world applications.

The Master of Science (ScM) in Health Informatics program places a strong emphasis on practical application through hands-on projects and practicums, ensuring that learners not only grasp theoretical concepts but also gain valuable experience applicable to real-world challenges in health and healthcare.

Biomedical informatics has become a core element across the entire spectrum of biomedicine, from bench biology to medicine to development of public health policy. This transdisciplinary field “studies and pursues the effective uses of biomedical data, information, and knowledge for scientific inquiry, problem solving and decision making, motivated by efforts to improve human health.” ( Kulikowski et al. )

Computers and Health

The demand for individuals with formal training in health informatics, a sub-discipline of biomedical informatics, is growing rapidly, particularly in light of national emphasis on electronic health records (EHR), artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare, learning health systems, clinical and translational science, healthcare reform, population and public health surveillance, and global health. Opportunities and careers in health informatics exist in a broad range of environments including clinical care and research, personal health management, public and population health, health policy, and translational science.

Competencies

The ScM in Health Informatics program consists of a combination of coursework and practicum experiences, which are organized into seven major competency areas:

  • Health and Healthcare
  • Data Science
  • Social and Behavioral Science
  • Health Information Technology and Digital Health
  • Professionalism
  • Team Science

The program aims to provide foundational and applied training for learners with diverse backgrounds, interests, and career paths (e.g., computer science and data science graduates, medical students, clinicians, and other health professionals). The adapted curriculum for each learner involves participation in and engagement with the following four components:

  • Projects and Practicums
  • Seminar Presentations, Journal Club Discussions, and Workshops
  • Community Resources and Events

The ScM in Health Informatics program is designed to be completed in 2 years (4 semesters) or at an accelerated pace in 1 year (2 semesters and 1 summer). The latter would accommodate undergraduate students interested in the Fifth-Year Master’s Degree option or medical students who could take a leave of absence to participate.
