More About The Certified Professional Resume Writer CPRW Certification
By Teena Rose
Chances are you’re here reading about the CPRW because you’re new to resume writing and looking into what you need to get certified.
Let’s start at the beginning…
The CPRW test and certification are administered through the Professional Association of Resume Writers and Career Coaches (PARW/CC).
This is the oldest credentialing organization for resume writers, founded in 1990. Prior to their formation, associations for resume writers or career professionals were non-existent.
The organization was started with a few goals in mind.
The most important one being to set quality standards in resume writing as well as help resume writers learn, network, and share information about all things resumes. 😉
Today, the CPRW is the most widely held certification among resume writers and is believed to be the most respected certification a resume writer can hold.
The Nationally Certified Resume Writer (NCRW) certification is ranked high as well.
Details: Prospective professional resume writers must pass a multi-part test comprised of multiple-choice questions and essay questions, all dealing with the different aspects of resume writing.
There is a study guide that applicants have several days to learn, and the final part of the CPRW exam involves writing a resume and cover letter from mock client data.
The examination is timed, and the applicant can obtain and return the test via email or fax. Tests and sample resumes are reviewed by a team of resume writing/industry professionals, and then a grade is issued.
The price of the study guide and examinations is $250, and applicants must demonstrate basic skills in resume writing before being approved to take the examination.
Active membership with the PARW/CC is required to take the exam and subsequently “keep” the CPRW certification once obtained.
Because the CPRW is both the most recognized designation in the industry and the most highly regarded, more resume writers pursue this certification than any other. This is both a good and bad situation for new CPRWs, because it means having a true industry-standard certification but may also mean not standing out from the crowd anymore.
In addition to the CPRW certification, the Professional Association of Resume Writers and Career Coaches (PARW/CC) also offers the following certifications:
Certified Employment Interview Professional (CEIP)
Certified Professional Career Coach (CPCC)

- The CPRW credential is awarded to those who have earned the credential by passing the PARWCC resume writing exam and abiding by the Code of Ethics established by PARWCC.
- The CPRW is designed for individuals who have previous résumé writing experience. This is not a program to learn how to write a résumé (see: Fundamentals of Résumé writing).
Active PARWCC membership is required to enroll and use all certifications. If you are not a current member, you will be prompted to join at checkout (PARWCC Membership is $175).
- Successful CPRW Candidates Recieve:
Become A Certified Résumé Writing Professional
- Not only does the general public now have a means of selecting the industry’s best résumé professionals, but others in the career field have taken notice.
- Publishers of career books request that résumé samples be submitted exclusively by those with the CPRW credential, including individual practitioners, universities, military career counselors, and state Departments of Labor, etc.
- Upon completion of registration, an automatic email will be sent to you with a link to download the CPRW instructions. (Link will expire in 30 days)
- The instructions are a short guide to help prepare for the test, not to teach basic résumé writing skills.
- There is a one-year time frame from registration to complete the testing process.
- The CPRW timed test is sent via email and returned via email. Complete instructions are in the study guide.
- Tests are graded anonymously by a Certification Committee who have also earned the CPRW credential and received training in test scoring. Results are available in approximately 8 weeks.

Should You Get Certified as a Resume Writer?Deciding if certification is right for you will depend on your career goals. Here are a few key questions to ask yourself: Will it help my business? Having certifications can significantly increase your credibility with clients and help you command higher rates. If you’re struggling to get clients, it can give your marketing a boost. Do any clients require it? Some employers specifically seek out certified resume writers. So if you want to work with certain companies, certification may be necessary. Does my experience qualify? Make sure you meet any experience requirements before investing time and money into certifications. Can I afford it? The costs may fit easily into your budget, or they may be prohibitive. Consider the potential earnings increase versus the investment. Do I have time? Properly preparing for certifications takes significant time and focus. Make sure you can devote the needed study and class hours. The more “yes” answers you have, the more pursuing certifications is likely to benefit your resume writing career. Key Tips for Earning Your Resume Writing CertificationIf you decide to go for certification, here are some tips to help you succeed: Start with an “entry level” cert – Don’t bite off more than you can chew. Build your confidence with a foundational certification before attempting advanced ones. Set a study schedule – Break preparation into small, manageable tasks instead of cramming at the last minute. Leverage provided study materials – Use any textbooks, sample questions, webinars or learning tools offered to prep for exams. Don’t rely solely on your own knowledge. Read carefully – Understand exactly what content or writing samples you need to submit to certification sponsors. Follow all directions. Focus on your weak areas – Use any practice tests to identify gaps in your knowledge and spend more time strengthening those skills. Partner with colleagues – Studying with peers can help you stay motivated. Offer to quiz each other on resume topics. Don’t let setbacks derail you – If you don’t pass on your first try, use it as a learning experience and try again! Persistence pays off. With smart preparation and dedication, you can earn those coveted credentials and take your resume writing career to new heights. FAQs About Resume Writing CertificationHere are answers to some common questions about getting certified: Do I need an educational degree to get certified? Most certifications do not require any specific educational degree or college major. They focus on demonstrating your practical resume writing skills. How long does the certification process take?It varies significantly by program – some take just weeks to complete exams while extensive training programs can take many months. Give yourself ample preparation time. Can I use credentials like “CPRW” right away?Typically you cannot advertise credentials until you have officially passed all requirements and been awarded the certification. Each program has specific usage guidelines. Do I have to join an organization to get certified? Will I need to renew my CARW certification?Once attained, the CARW Certification must be renewed every two (2) years by earning 30 industry-related continuing education units (CEUs). This can be completed through a variety of activities such as: employment-related book reviews, career-related community service, completing related coursework or study, publishing resumes, winning resume awards, and/or authoring articles, blog posts, and related materials on resume writing. The renewal fee is $50.00 for members. The renewal fee for non-members is $100.00. Download the Renewal Form. Why is renewal necessary? Because the craft of resume writing is dynamic and is swiftly changing with the advances in computer technology and applicant tracking / scanning as well as emerging legal issues involving resume fraud. These are just a few concerns that make it necessary for professionals to demonstrate ongoing education and knowledge of modern resume writing techniques. Are there resources that can help me prepare or that CDI recommends?Yes. The CDI Certification team has prepared a comprehensive manual outlining the criteria we look for when evaluating resume samples submitted for any of our certifications. This 50-page manual, which covers everything from grammar and punctuation to formatting, is included in your CARW step one fee of $50 US. Additionally, there are numerous resume writing resources available (lessons, infographics, video tutorials, and more) in the CDI member section including successful resume submissions by TORI award winners. Not all résumé writers get certified, and the question we’ll cover in this article is if it’s worth doing so. We’ll go over the reasons it might be worth getting certified, if résumé writing could be a good career choice for you, and we’ll give you our top choice for a résumé writing certification program. What is a Résumé Writer?A résumé writer is a professional who helps clients write or improve their résumés to help them get jobs. The client will tell the writer about their job history, skillset, and education. Then, after studying the job description and researching industry norms, the writer turns the client’s experience into a clear, impressive, and properly stylized document to help them get an interview. A résumé is an applicant’s first impression. And many job seekers don’t know what makes a résumé compelling and attention-grabbing or how to tailor a résumé to a position. So, working as a résumé writer can greatly boost clients' chances of getting an interview. It can also be a meaningful job because you get to support folks in their career advancement and help them uncover opportunities they may not have otherwise had. Some résumé writers only provide clients with résumé support. Others also help write cover letters and LinkedIn profiles. And others work as full-fledged career coaches and help clients with interview prep , networking, and clarifying career direction. Is It Worth Getting Certified as a Résumé Writer? If you want to work as a résumé writer, then the short answer is yes, it is a good idea to get certified. Not all résumé writers choose to get certified. And you can certainly be good at résumé writing and make this career work without it. However, spending the extra time and money on a certification course will give you three main benefits: credibility, skill development, and networking. Getting certified will increase your credibilityCredibility refers to how qualified, trustworthy, and skilled your potential clients perceive you to be. Having a credible reputation is one of the best marketing tactics you can employ. And there are a lot of ways to gain credibility . You might have worked in HR for years and seen thousands of résumés, you might have glowing testimonials on your website, or perhaps you simply have a confident and persuasive presence. One surefire way to gain credibility is to get trained. Studies suggest that we trust doctors more when they wear white lab coats. Why? Because the formality of a lab coat means “I’m a professional,” and signals authority and credibility. It’s the same reason lawyers hang their degrees on their office walls. The same is true of certifications. If a potential client knows you’ve been certified with a reputable organization, then this is your lab coat. It signals that you are a professional and will help clients feel reassured and trust your expertise more. Getting certified will enhance your skill setAnother great reason to get certified as a résumé writer is to build your skill set. A résumé is ultimately a marketing document, and crafting one is a skill. While self-study can get you far, to become excellent at any skill it helps to learn in a structured format, get feedback from a teacher, and practice with other learners. Training in this type of format can fill in your blindspots, make sure you have all the fundamentals covered, and take you to the next level. It can help you write résumés that portray your clients as the all-star that the employer has been looking for. Completing résumé writing training will likely give you greater confidence that you are setting your clients up for success. Getting certified (in a cohort-based program) will expand your networkNot all certification courses will introduce you to other people, but if you can find a cohort-based training, this can be a boon for your professional network. You’ll meet other ambitious colleagues and teachers who share a similar career path to you, some of whom may even refer you clients down the road. How Do You Get Certified in Résumé Writing? To get certified in résumé writing, you’ll need to pick and enroll in a program. Most programs require you to pass assignments or a final exam. There are many types of certifications for résumé writing. But don’t let all the options confuse you; as long as the organization administering the training is reputable, then you can’t go wrong. One solid option is the Senior Professional Résumé Writing Certification . It’s widely applicable to most types of clients and would benefit both entry-level and more experienced résumé writers. What Type of Person Would Be a Good Fit to Become a Résumé Writer? If you are not yet a professional résumé writer but are considering the possibility, here are some clues that it could be a good career path for you. You want to help others succeed. Effective résumé writing ultimately comes down to empowering others to create more career opportunities for themselves. If you like the idea of helping someone achieve their goals, this could be a good fit. You excel at distilling complex information. As a résumé writer, you are turning a complex and multifaceted person into a piece of paper. Can you find key threads and locate the signal amidst the noise? You thrive on variety. One day, you might be crafting a résumé for a corporate lawyer switching to government law, and the next day it might be a non-profit coordinator making a career advancement. The skillset is consistent, but each client will be different. And while some résumé writers stick to a single niche, they’ll still work with clients from a variety of backgrounds. You enjoy research. Because of the variety of clients, you’ll need to get used to researching different industries and roles. A doctor’s résumé and a graphic designer’s should look very different. You stay up-to-date on job market trends. The best résumé writers continuously research evolving hiring practices, in-demand skills , and how different industries change. If you have a natural curiosity about the job search process, this could be a great fit. You like writing. While career coaches help people through meaningful conversations, résumé writers help people through writing. Many people weave both skill sets into a single career, but to be a good résumé writer, you have to enjoy working by yourself and with words. What education or work experience is required to be a résumé writer? While there is no formal education required, a bachelor's degree will be helpful to work as a résumé writer, as this can signal some level of credibility to corporate clients. And at the very least, proficiency with writing and editing is a must. You don't necessarily need extensive work experience to become a successful professional résumé writer. It is possible to break into this field with just certification training and a natural talent for writing compelling résumés. That said, the more career experience and success you’ve had, the better. First-hand experience with the hiring process will give you more empathy and knowledge. If you have figured out what it takes to get hired for multiple roles throughout your career, then you can use that knowledge to help others. And while it’s not necessary, if you’ve worked as a recruiter, hiring manager, or in HR, those experiences will give you a huge advantage. Which Résumé Writing Certification Program Should You Pick? There are dozens of programs out there. Though one choice you might be interested in is the Senior Professional Résumé Writer Certification from the International Association of Career Coaches (IACC). This course is based on a video curriculum with seven lessons. The course covers: How to gather client information for their résumé The components of a high impact résumé Résumé designs and templates (and which to use for different industries) The purpose of each résumé section Writing job description paragraphs Writing eye-catching achievements How to increase efficiency as a résumé writer Writing engaging cover letters In addition to the video lessons, there are weekly calls with a cohort of other trainees. This is a great opportunity to build your network, and learn from others. Lastly, you’ll get live feedback from the résumé writing staff to help sharpen your skills. Most graduates can comfortably complete this course in 8-9 weeks. Taking a training like this can take your résumé writing skills from good to great. As one graduate from the program wrote, Before working through the Senior Professional Résumé Writer course, I thought the résumés I had written were pretty good. Well, “pretty good” doesn’t land you at the top of the pile on an employer’s desk! By the time I received my SPRW certification, I had already seen my clients’ interview and hiring rates skyrocket, and I felt so blessed to have been able to help them land incredible jobs. If you feel on the fence, you can book a free 30-minute consultation with Cara Heilmann, president of the IACC. Just find a time in this calendar. Whether you choose to get certified through this program, a different one, or none at all, best of luck in your career journey helping others get jobs. Do You Really Need a Writer Certificate?Whether or not you need a writer certificate depends on what type of writing you are planning to do. If you are writing for publication, such as books, magazines, newspapers, or websites, then it is likely that you will need some kind of certification. Many publishers and editors require writers to have some kind of professional credential in order to be considered for publication. However, if you are an aspiring writer who just wants to write creative pieces for yourself or to share with friends and family, then a writer certificate may not be necessary. Even if you want to get published one day, there are many other ways to build your portfolio and credibility as a writer without having a formal certificate. You could take courses on writing from online schools or community colleges; join writing groups; attend workshops; volunteer for literary magazines; read books about the craft of writing; practice your skills by joining online forums and submitting work for feedback; and submit articles and stories to publications. All of these activities can help you hone your craft and build your reputation as a writer without needing a formal certificate. Ultimately, whether or not someone needs a writer certificate depends on their individual goals as a writer and what they hope to accomplish in their career. If becoming certified is something that will help them reach their goals faster, then it might be worth pursuing. However, if they plan on taking more time-consuming but ultimately more rewarding routes towards achieving their goals as writers, then they may decide that it’s not necessary for them at this stage in their career. Unlike the CARW, the CERM requires a bit more before someone can complete this resume writing certification course. There are also two stages that a writer needs to pass.
Anyone can get a CERM without becoming a member of the CDI. But that will cost you a lot compared to what a member has to pay. For CDI members the fee is $297. Seeing as how CDI offers some other resume writing certification free services, you should definitely get the membership. Advantages and Disadvantages of the CRS+XThe CRS+X is the best resume writing certification for those who’d like to stick to their preferred niches. It’s also one of the cheapest certifications in resume writing courses. For specialists, there is no better option. Although the pricing is good for one specialization, when you take into account multiple specializations at once, the amount gets quite large, and there are no discounts. 5. To get the ACRW course, there are two payment options. You can make a one-time payment of $1895. You can also divide this into 3 payments of $650 and pay it in instalments. Advantages and Disadvantages of the ACRWSince all writers receive 3-months of training, upon completion, they become ready to handle professional work from the industry. If you want to pay it all in one go, it will be an amount of $2195. You can also make 3 payments of $735 each. Advantages and Disadvantages of the ACRW-FederalThe ability to write federal resumes has to be one of the key takeaways for the ACRW-Federal. But for some writers, the workload of the training becomes a bit too much. 8. Academy Certified Career Storyteller (ACCS)Similar to the CCST, this program from the RWA trains writers to incorporate story-telling elements in resumes. It’s an advanced-level certification from the RWA. Applicants must have an industry-recognized prior certification to qualify for the ACCS. Pricing for the certificationFor members of the RWA, the ACCS certification course will only cost $669. For non-members, on the other hand, that will go up to $869. You can also use CPRW credentials in your name. For downsides, the requirement to be a member is an additional cost. Other than that, there are no issues. 10. Nationally Certified Resume Writer (NCRW)The Nationally Certified Resume Writer (NCRW) certification is provided by The National Resume Writers’ Association (NRWA). This is one of the most challenging certificates out there. Those who want the NCRW, need to offer proof of Continuing Education Units (CEU) that are gained from the association. Writers also have to pass a sample quiz followed by the main NCRW exam itself. And collecting the CEUs is no easy task either. The membership for the NRWA costs $175. For the sample quiz, it costs $75, and for the exam registration, it’s an additional $250. Advantages and Disadvantages of the NCRWSimilar to the CPRW, you can use the NCRW credentials after your name. You also have the right to use the logo on your website. Additionally, adding random certificates to your resume makes you look indecisive and confused about your career, painting a negative picture of your personal brand to employers. That’s why we filtered through more than 1,000 resume writers covering the United States and Canada in order to hand-pick the top certified resume writers in North America. Below, we will also briefly discuss what it means to be a Certified Professional Resume Writer (CPRW) and if you should choose a writer that is certified. Best Certified Resume WritersWhat Is A Certified Resume Writer? In order for a resume writer to become certified, they must first select one of the major resume certification companies to get certified with. As of now, these options are somewhat limited to two main companies:
Once you have decided which certifying company to go with, you will typically have to undergo some level of testing. The testing usually requires the writer seeking certification to write a sample resume and cover letter, then send it to the certifying organization for review. If the resume meets the basic standards, the writer will become a Certified Resume Writer! The entire process takes ~4 weeks. Should You Hire A Certified Resume Writer? The answer is: Yes and no. If the writer that you choose happens to be certified, that’s a great bonus. But more important than a writer’s certifications are the writer’s skills. A friendly writer with excellent resume samples and amazing reviews would take the cake any day! There is absolutely no guarantee that a certified professional resume writer will yield greater results than someone who is not certified. It’s important to keep in mind that there are 1,000s of “certified resume writers”. Bad seeds slip through the cracks. If you’ve been out in the field for a while, you typically list your experience first. However, if your recent education is relevant to procurement, such as a degree in supply chain management, you should highlight it by placing it before your experience. Your education can show your commitment to the procurement field. Include any certifications like a Certified Purchasing Professional (CPP) that prove your skills. Remember, education is not just degrees but also workshops and trainings that hone your ability to negotiate and manage contracts. Certifications and coursesInclude any relevant certifications such as Certified Professional in Supply Management (CPSM) or courses in supply chain management. These can make you stand out to employers in procurement fields. Add details of any procurement software you are proficient with, such as SAP or Oracle. Proficiency in these tools is often crucial in procurement roles. Entry-Level Procurement Officer Resume SampleIdeal resume length. As you prepare your resume for a procurement officer role, aim for one page if you have less than 10 years of experience in this field. This length is enough to show your work, skills, and education. Focus on your most recent and relevant experiences. You can use strong verbs like 'managed' or 'negotiated' to clearly explain your past job duties and achievements. If you bring more than 10 years of experience or have reached a senior level, a two-page resume is suitable. On the first page, put your most critical information, such as recent jobs where you saved money or improved efficiency. Use the second page to list other roles and projects that show your growth to a procurement officer. Make sure everything on your resume is clear and that the font is not too small. Good readability is crucial. A well-organized resume will help you stand out. Senior Procurement Officer Resume SampleHighlight negotiation skills. Explicitly mention your negotiation skills and any successful deals or contracts you have managed. Being able to negotiate effectively is a key part of procurement roles. Include metrics like cost reductions you achieved through negotiations. This quantifiable evidence shows your impact in previous positions.
