Fully Funded PhD Programs in Anthropology

As part of our series  How to Fully Fund Your PhD , here is a list of universities that offer fully funded PhD programs in Anthropology. PhD in Anthropology can lead to a variety of exciting careers, including academia, museum work, resource management, and forensics, among others.

“Full funding” is a financial aid package for full-time students that includes full tuition remission as well as an annual stipend or salary during the entire program, which is usually 3-6 years. Funding usually comes with the expectation that students will teach or complete research in their field of study. Not all universities fully fund their doctoral students, which is why researching the financial aid offerings of many different programs, including small and lesser-known schools both in the U.S. and abroad, is essential.

Boston University (Boston, MA): Each year, The Boston University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences offers incoming PhD students Dean’s Fellowships, which include full tuition, a living stipend, and health insurance for five years.

Brown University (Providence, RI): The Graduate School offers incoming doctoral students five years of guaranteed financial support, including a stipend, tuition remission, health services fee, and health and dental insurance subsidies.

Duke University (Durham, NC): Graduate Fellowships provide tuition plus a living stipend for five years, contingent on continued appropriate progress toward the Ph.D. degree. Stipends and fellowships require service in the form of teaching assistance. Other university awards are given on a competitive basis to outstanding students.

Emory University (Atlanta, GA): The Department of Anthropology funds all its graduate students and keeps its class size small to maximize financial support and faculty responsiveness to the needs of each student. Anthropology Graduate Fellowships cover tuition costs and afford an additional 12-month living stipend of at least $31,000/year for five years, pending satisfactory progress.

Harvard University (Cambridge, MA): The financial aid for the PhD in Anthropology features guaranteed funding for the first five years for all PhD students and a variety of funding options and fellowships for other students.

The City University of New York (New York, NY): Every applicant to The Graduate Center’s doctoral programs will automatically be considered for five-year institutional funding packages. The aid we offer — including fellowships, tuition awards, and assistantships — is based on merit.

The University of California – San Diego (San Diego, CA): Graduate students receive financial support for up to five years. Year 1-4 graduate students receive full payment of tuition fees, plus stipend/salary and first year of non-resident tuition paid. Year 5 graduate students receive a one-year Research Stipend for a research fellowship.

The University of Kansas (Lawrence, KS): KU Anthropology is committed to providing four-year funding packages to admitted graduate students. The majority of departmental funding comes in the form of Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) and Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) positions. GTA and GRA positions include a full tuition waiver and health insurance.

The University of Minnesota ( Minneapolis ,  MN): All students admitted to the PhD program are offered a five-year funding package, contingent on satisfactory progress toward the degree. The funding package provides payment of tuition up to 14 credits per semester, partial payment of the health insurance premium, and a stipend.

The University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, PA): All accepted full-time PhD applicants are offered the Benjamin Franklin Fellowship which includes the cost of tuition, fees, and health insurance as well as providing an annual stipend.

The University of Virginia (Charlottesville, VA): All incoming students for the PhD are supported with a five-year funding package as well as additional grants for foreign language study, conference travel, and preparatory research during summers.

Rhoda O. Lewis Award

The R. O. Lewis Student Fund of the George C. Frison Institute provides support to nontraditional undergraduate and graduate students who are pursuing a degree with a focus on archaeology at the University of Wyoming. The disbursement of funds will be by the Frison Institute Advisory committee. Any request related to degree completion will be considered, including book purchases, travel to meetings, fieldwork, and labwork needs. Available funds will be determined and distributed on a regular basis (semester or yearly) based on income generated by the R. O. Lewis Fund share of the Frison Institute endowment.   1. Letter explaining the nature of your non-traditional status (such as: “I returned to school to study archeology after raising a family…” or “After a career in aerospace engineering I decided to pursue studies in archeology…” or whatever describes you status as a nontraditional student).  Please discuss your reasons for pursuing archeology and the intended use of the award (such as books, travel to conference). 12 point font, double space, one page. Please state separately 2. Your GPA. 3. Your status in the program (freshmen, sophomore…1st year graduate studies…). 4. Your career goals. 5. Admissions to the PhD in social anthropology and the AM in medical anthropology have been paused and will not be accepting applications for fall 2025. The PhD in archaeology will be accepting applications, and the MD/PhD program will be accepting applications.

The Department of Anthropology is one of the world’s leading institutions for anthropological research. Our PhD programs provide in-depth conceptual and methodological training in archaeology and social anthropology , with faculty whose work covers every time period—from the Paleolithic to the present—and every major world area. The department also offers an AM in medical anthropology .

You will have the unique opportunity to work with a world-renowned faculty that has a long tradition of foundational research across nearly every continent. You will have access to a wide range of resources including the Harvard Medical School, Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health, various area centers such as the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies, Korea Institute, Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies, Asia Center, and Weatherhead Center for International Affairs. You will also have access to extensive archaeological and anthropological collections of the Peabody Museum, an important resource for both research and teaching.

Projects that students have worked on include “Archaeology of the 19th and 20th Century Chinese Labor Migrants,” “Zooarchaeology in Ancient Mesopotamia,” and “Mass Media in Indonesia.” Our PhD graduates are now on the anthropology faculties at some of the top universities in the world. Others have secured positions with Facebook, the World Bank, and various museums.

Academic Background

Previous concentration in anthropology is not required; however, applicants must be able to clearly state their interests in anthropology and demonstrate familiarity with intellectual issues in current anthropological theory and method.

Writing Sample

For PhD applicants, a writing sample is required as part of the application and can be a term paper or thesis no longer than 20 pages (double spaced) not including bibliography. Do not submit a longer sample with instructions to read a particular section. Applicants should select an example of their best academic writing that demonstrates their capacity for rigorous analysis and independent work. It is not essential that the writing sample be directly related to the topics or areas that you are proposing to study in the future.

Statement of Purpose

A statement of purpose is not a biographical narrative. A persuasive statement of purpose (1) clearly describes the applicant’s proposed areas of research; (2) justifies the applicant’s research interests in terms of the relevant existing scholarship, the applicant’s personal intellectual motivation, and the applicant’s background and/or training; (3) explains why the anthropology faculty and curriculum at Harvard are ideal for supporting the applicant’s training and research. We strongly encourage applicants to read the publications of the faculty they are applying to work with. A clear connection with faculty research and teaching is the best gauge of an applicant’s potential “fit” with the Department.

The Department of Anthropology offers several scholarships to both graduate and undergraduate students. All Scholarships are award based on academic achievement and/or demonstration of financial need. You must be admitted to Boise State University and have an active myBoiseState account in order to apply.

The Cynthia Bradbury Scholarship provides support to Anthropology majors with a demonstrated interest in Biological Anthropology.

In 1992 the John and Florence Schaertl Scholarship in archaeology was established in support of students pursuing a career in archaeology. As co-founders of the Idaho Archaeological Society, the Schaertl’s had long supported anthropology at Boise State University. This scholarship is available to degree-seeking students, who have declared Archaeology major and are pursuing a career in archaeology.

• Full-time Anthropology degree-seeking student at Boise State University.
• Upper-division standing or graduate level.

Application Deadline – March 31st

• Proven interest in archaeology.
• Request a letter of recommendation from a Boise State Faculty member.
• Provide an essay or resume that outlines your commitment to archeology with the following information: 1) Participation in paid or volunteer setting in research labs, club participation, conference attendance, participation as volunteer or presenter; 2) Academic achievements

AZIZ F. HASNAIN SCHOLARSHIP FOR UNDERPRIVILEGED STUDENTS

NAHID S. HASNAIN SCHOLARSHIP FOR UNDERPRIVILEGED STUDENTS

Wesley r. and mary hurt archaeology research fellowship.

The Wesley R. and Mary Hurt Endowed Scholarship Provides support for student research projects in archaeology.  The award may be made up to $1,000. Recipients of this award are expected to provide a report detailing the results of their research that includes acknowledgment of the Hurt Fellowship.

• Applicants must provide a 3-4 page prospectus outlining their proposed research that includes a description of the problem, the timeline for completion of data collection, analysis, and report writing, and a proposed budget.

LAURA BASSI SCHOLARSHIP

The Laura Bassi Scholarship, which awards a total of $8,000 thrice per annum, was established by Editing Press in 2018 with the aim of providing editorial assistance to postgraduates and junior academics whose research focuses on neglected topics of study, broadly construed. The scholarships are open to every discipline and the next round of funding will be awarded in April 2021:

All currently enrolled master’s and doctoral candidates are eligible to apply, as are academics in the first five years of full-time employment. Applicants are required to submit a completed application form along with their CV through the application portal by the relevant deadline.

Scholarships for Anthropology Majors

The study of anthropology has an ambitious goal: to discover what it means to be human. Since that question has no easy answer, anthropologists study cultures, biology, languages and ancient ruins in order to gain more insight. If you’re an anthropology major and you need help paying for your higher education, a scholarship might be the answer for you. A number of the available scholarships are offered by individual universities, such as Colorado State University, University of West Georgia and Northern Arizona University. Others are funded by professional organizations, such as the Archaeological Institute of America, the Firebird Foundation for Anthropological Research and the American Anthropological Association. The advantage of undertaking advanced research in UCL Anthropology is the breadth of expertise available within the sections of the department. Most anthropology departments specialise in the sub-disciplines of social or biological anthropology. However, students at UCL can tackle research in interdisciplinary areas and expect to receive expert supervision in social and cultural, biological and medical anthropology, as well as material, visual and digital culture. Additionally, each of these sections in the department offers a diverse range of theoretical, methodological, topical and geographic interests and specialisms.

One factor that supplements this breadth and interdisciplinarity is the existence of a flourishing Research and Reading Group (RRG) culture in which staff and students informally come together outside of area sections to share knowledge and discuss individual research on subjects of shared interest. This leads to formal workshops, conferences, and publications that engage broader audiences and offer platforms for students to present their work.

Teaching and learning

You will have continuous support to develop your research throughout the programme. In the first year, you will undertake rigorous training in research methods (Methods Seminar) and will explore the academic skills required to plan and carry out a successful PhD (ResDesPres Seminar), with a focus on writing skills, research ethics, wellbeing and policy and media engagement, etc.

The PhD is examined by a viva committee comprising of two experts in the field, an external examiner who can be based anywhere in the world, and an internal examiner who is normally from the University of London. You should not have had much prior contact with either examiner. Your supervisor nominates suitable examiners during your final year, in consultation with you, and the nominations are scrutinised by UCL’s examinations office who may approve or reject them. 

The examiners have several weeks, or sometimes months, to read your thesis in detail. The viva exam is a meeting in which the examiners and yourself discuss your work, both through direct questions and more informal conversation, and it normally takes two or more hours.

We expect you to use 15 hours each week for the taught element of the programme, and 20 hours for self-directed study and research planning.

Research environment

The MPhil/PhD takes place in a research environment that includes the following components. These are:

• Weekly research seminars, organised according to sub-disciplinary section. Doctoral Researchers are strongly expected to attend their seminar series every week.
• RRGs – Research & Reading Groups which PGRs set up and/or join.
• Supportive courses, notably Research Design and Presentation (Year 1); Thesis-Writing Seminar (Years 2 & 3); Research Methods (Year 1)
• Peer-group interaction facilitated by common-room and hot-desk office spaces

Workshops organised in the department at the rate of up to 10 per year.

In Year One, you will crystallise your project with your Primary Supervisor, select a Secondary Supervisor and prepare for upgrade from MPhil to PhD as UCL requires. The upgrading normally comprises in a panel of staff, chaired by your subsidiary supervisor, who probe your detailed research review and proposal. This panel normally takes place after 9 months, before fieldwork commences but (a) may occur at 12 months and sometimes (b) after the period of fieldwork.

You will usually spend between 12 and 15 months undertaking data collection. For ethnographic projects this means being  ‘in the field’, but data collection can also take place in laboratory or archive settings (for example in Biological Anthropology or some Material Culture work). For some projects, shorter periods in the field are appropriate. Undertaking fieldwork is subject to approval as regards data protection, ethics, and risk issues.

You will usually return from fieldwork to write up in your third year and during the final CRS year (CRS means Completing Research Status, during which you do not pay fees). Your third year should ideally be devoted to writing exclusively. Assuming your PhD progresses well during that year, you are encouraged to gain teaching experience during your CRS writing-up year, or to undertake some similar vocational experience such as publications. Minor variations of this structure occur within the sub-disciplinary sections of the Department.

The degree promotes advanced skills in qualitative and quantitative methods and expert knowledge of the anthropological issues pertinent to their sub-disciplinary field of study. You will collect original data through methodologies that include but are not limited to participant observation, formal and informal interviews, ethnographic recordings, surveys, object and visual analyses, archival research, auto-ethnography, oral and genealogical histories, laboratory work, excavation, and participatory action research.

The MPhil/PhD programme is expected to be completed by full-time researchers in three years plus one in CRS (ie. it is officially three years of registration but researchers are permitted to take up to four years). For part-time researchers, the work is to be completed in five fee-paying years, plus two in CRS. You enter CRS when you are judged to be within less than one year of submitting, so if you have not made sufficient progress at the end of the third year, you may not be able to enter CRS.

A part-time MPhil/PhD takes place over five years, plus two in CRS.

There is no standard placement programme. Some anthropologists do work in institutions for up to a year as a part of their fieldwork, and many form collaborations with other institutions.

We take account of three things in an application:

• CV (ie. Does the candidate have the background to execute this work to a world-class standard of excellence).
• Project proposal (ie. Is it anthropological and does it have academic merit for new knowledge).
• Prospective supervisor (ie. Whether we have the expertise to advise on this research).

Every anthropology project is a little different. Normally candidates require the support of a prospective supervisor in the department, with whom they have talked through their proposal, their interests, experience and ideas.

It is not an official requirement to have a previous academic background which includes anthropology, but the project and the candidate should clearly be equipped to undertake research in an anthropology department and which contributes to anthropology. In general, projects supervised in the Social and Cultural Anthropology and in the Medical Anthropology subsections do tend to require you to have an anthropology background. Biological Anthropology and Material Visual & Digital Culture are more mixed, with some candidates coming from areas such as biological sciences, palaeontology, archaeology, design, design history, HCI, and museum studies.

As an anthropology major , you will study the origins of humankind, how our humble beginnings shaped us into the people we are today and what the future could possibly bring based on the past. Classes in history , biology and archaeology are typically required in addition to the departmental classes on culture and language and for good reason: New information is being discovered and implemented every day by students at the undergraduate and graduate levels…though the one thing yet to be determined is how these students can pay for school most effectively. But we know: anthropology scholarships!

Anthropology bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate holders have a variety of employment opportunities at their fingertips and often use their knowledge to branch off into ancillary fields including medicine , education and marketing. Obtaining these positions means getting through school first and to do this, financial aid is vital. The government offers a number of federally-funded grants and loans , while many colleges have their own university-based anthropology scholarships. And then there are fellowship opportunities, like those provided by Diversity Abroad , the Society for Visual Anthropology and the Fulbright Program , that get students out of their armchairs domestically and abroad and into getting their hands dirty (sometimes quite literally) in the field they are studying.

Undergraduate awards, curtis wienker anthropology awards for undergraduate students.

The department permanently established four annual "Wienker Awards" for undergraduate distinction, through the generous donation of department alumnus, Curtis Wienker. Each year we recognize, with financial awards, the Best Undergraduate Honor's Thesis and Best Anthropology Essay - one each for archaeology, biological anthropology, and sociocultural anthropology. A faculty committee selects the papers for each award.

Other Support for Undergraduates

Additional support for anthropology undergraduate students comes from the Gerald G. Eck Student Fund, to help with the expenses related to honors program research, and the Senturia Family Fund, to support undergraduate students with financial need, to take part in field schools, study abroad programs, or purchases that make a difference and allow students to complete their studies. 

Graduate Awards

Pre-dissertation pilot research awards.

The department helps to support pre-dissertation pilot research projects and travel to national academic conferences for graduate students. Pre-dissertation pilot research awards provide graduate students with critical support that is not typically available from any other source of funding.

Each year we fund as many graduate students as possible to conduct pre-dissertation pilot research. This research is used to identify a field site, make important connections at the location, and undertake preliminary data collection. These awards are made in amounts ranging from $600 to $1,500 each. This research is funded directly by donations to several department gift accounts.

One significant source of support comes from the Student Training in Anthropological Research Tools and Skills (STARTS) endowment fund. In January 2014, the department hosted an event to honor its founders, David Notkin and Cathy Tuttle. (You can read Cathy’s comments here.) To see the many ways in which STARTS has supported graduate student research, the department created a  45-page booklet   that highlights 21 of the STARTS recipients with descriptions and photos of their research.

Anthropology Graduate Student Conference Funds

The Department of Anthropology allows up to $200 per year in travel support to graduate students to support conference or other approved official travel. To apply complete the online form available here . 

Additional travel support may be available through the Graduate Student Conference Presentation Award managed by the Graduate School. For more information regarding funding limits and eligibility requirements visit the  Graduate Student Conference Presentation Award website . Though not managed by the Department of Anthropology, to apply for a Graduate Student Conference Award one uses the Anthropology Graduate Student Conference Funds application linked above. 

Other Support for Graduates

Additional support for anthropology graduate students comes from the Evan David James Fellowship to support deserving graduate students conducting research in the pacific northwest, and the Ronald Leroy Olson Fellowship to support either students who are members of a Native American or Native Alaskan Tribe, or those conducting research in the Pacific Northwest.

Shared Support

The Brett Baldwin Scholarship is open to both anthropology undergraduate and graduate students, and is awarded on academic merit.

Anthropology comprises the entire human experience, including societies, cultures, and behaviors. Curriculum 

You have the opportunity to explore the human and pre-human past through archaeology, the history of how humans became what we are through biological anthropology, and the human present through cultural anthropology. 

Majoring in Anthropology: 40 hours 

Our introductory courses acquaint you with the basic history, methods, and perspectives of Anthropology, whereas our upper division and elective courses feature in-depth, topical, and theoretical investigations into specific dimensions of the human experience.

Many of our courses allow you to be involved with community-engaged, hands-on, applied work in your own backyard. Featured topics include: 

• Cultural Diversity in the Modern World —gather oral histories from family and community members and present those stories in a compelling way
• Immigrant Health —conduct fieldwork projects with immigrant and refugee-serving agencies 
• Zooarchaeology —through hands-on lab work identifying and analyzing animal skeletons recovered from archaeological sites, learn about the biological and cultural evolution of human behavior
• History of Human Environmental Impacts —assess the claim that environmental and ecological factors have played a key role in human societies through a longitudinal and cross-cultural lens

Non-Anthropology majors can add a minor in Anthropology to their degree by completing at least 18 hours of specified coursework. You will need to see your CLAS advisor to declare this minor.

Demonstrate familiarity with the history of anthropological thoughts, theories, and current major schools of thought within the discipline. 

Demonstrate familiarity with human diversity, particularly people and cultures in at least one geographic region of the world over time (ELO of intercultural knowledge and competence, civic knowledge and engagement on a local and global level). 

Apply anthropological research methods in collecting, organizing, and analyzing data in at least one subfield of anthropology (ELO of inquiry and analysis, critical thinking, quantitative literacy, information literacy, problem solving, ethical reasoning and action, foundations and skills for lifelong learning and integrative and applied learning). 

Demonstrate competence in reading and critical evaluation of information from the perspective of behavioral science and from the perspectives of anthropological theory and ethics, thus fulfilling requirements for the well-rounded liberal arts education (ELO of critical thinking, reading, quantitative literacy, information literacy, problem solving, ethnical reasoning and action, foundations and skills for lifelong learning, and integrative and applied learning). 

Demonstrate their ability to effectively communicate their thoughts orally and in writing (ELO of written communication and oral communication). 

Students will demonstrate an understanding of Anthropological ethics. This includes being able to identify and articulate the purpose, use and relevancy of a study, and being well versed in issues of informed consent, ownership of data/images, rights of descendent and/or local populations, rights and access to archaeological/paleoanthropological sites, and the protection of vulnerable populations.  

The  cost of tuition  for the Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Anthropology is different for in-state and out-of-state students. See the link for the current table of rates.

Residents of western states may qualify for reduced tuition rates. The Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) program requires students to maintain current residency in WICHE state until degree completion.

Other opportunities

The department of Anthropology and other departments have paid positions (both in the work-study program and outside of it) which may include jobs as graders, teaching assistants, and learning assistants. Please expect to have to apply. Learn more here.

Admission Requirements 

If you are an incoming freshman to CU Denver (in-state, out-of-state, and international applicants), you can apply through either the Common Application or the Milo Application. Transfer students will need to submit the Milo Application.  

Incoming first-year students 

CU Denver requires that students complete the Colorado Higher Education Admission Requirements (HEAR). You will not have to meet all Minimum Academic Preparation Standards (MAPS) for admission, but you will need to complete CU Denver coursework by graduation. 

Transfer Students 

We have strong connections with other four-year and community colleges. If you have completed more than 24 hours of transferable coursework, you will be evaluated for admission on the basis of your college GPA without regard to your high school performance. If you have fewer than 24 hours, you will be evaluated based on both your high school and college GPAs. If you are in your first or second semester at one of the participating  Colorado community colleges  and plan to transfer to CU Denver after earning your associate degree,  CU Denver’s Admission Promise  might be a great program for you. To qualify, you must meet the criteria including meeting regularly with your assigned CU academic advisor while you are attending community college. International Students 

You will need to begin your application through the  Office of International Affairs . They will help you manage your application process. 

Domestic Application:  January 1  International Applications:  Priority is September 15, and Final is October 15

Jamie Hodgkins Publishes Article on Late Pleistocene Prey Mobility and its Implications for Neanderthal Ranging Behaviors

Jamie Hodgkins , Associate Professor of Anthropology, published an article in  Quaternary Science Reviews  on Late Pleistocene prey mobility and its implications for Neandertal ranging behaviors. 

Courtney Manthey-Pierce and Anna Warrener Publish Article on Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

Courtney Manthey-Pierce,  who received her MA from the Department of Anthrology, coauthored an article with her thesis advisor, Anna Warrener, Assistant Professor. The article shows that Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome may have evolved because it provides protection against fractures. They tested this hypothesis by examining rates of fracture occurrence in female athletes. Courtney is also a Junior Fellow with the Human Biology Association.

Insight into Pandemic Eldercare Impacts for Mexican Immigrants from Sarah Horton

Sarah Horton , Professor and Graduate Program Director for the Department of Anthropology, recently published an article based on interviews conducted with undocumented Mexican immigrants about their pandemic eldercare burdens. “ Praying for More Time: Mexican Immigrants’ Pandemic Eldercare Dilemmas ,” published in  Medical Anthropology Quarterly , details how they struggled to help elderly parents obtain health care despite their own exclusion from pandemic relief.

Bound to fail

For almost as long as cannabis has been legal in Colorado, Marty Otañez has been studying it. Not the drug itself, but issues surrounding it, such as the health and safety of workers in the industry and ways to reduce stigma for users.

Otañez is an associate professor of anthropology at CU Denver. One of his latest projects involves conducting hour-long video interviews with people about their experiences with psychedelics.

Through my time as an undergraduate anthropology student at CU Denver, I have embraced the words of Anthony Kwame Harrison, who said, “the discipline does not showcase diverse human lifeways to further exoticize those who live differently from us. In contrast, anthropology showcases cultural variation to illustrate the possibilities and potential for human life, and to demonstrate that the way of doing things we know best is neither normal nor necessarily right. It is just one way among a multitude of others. “Everybody does it but we all do it different”; this is culture”.
