A chemical reaction is a representation of chemical change in terms of symbols and formulae of reactants and products. There are various types of chemical reactions like combination, decomposition, displacement, double displacement, oxidation, and reduction reactions. Reactions in which heat is released along with the formation of products are called exothermic chemical reactions. All combustion reactions are exothermic reactions.

(ii) The massive force that pushes the rocket forward through space is generated due to the (a) combination reaction (b) decomposition reaction (c) displacement reaction (d) double displacement reaction

Answer: (b) The massive force that pushes the rocket forward through space is generated due to the decomposition reaction. Hydrogen peroxide decomposes and provides it with a considerable reaction force thrust.

(iii) A white salt on heating decomposes to give brown fumes and the yellow residue is left behind. The yellow residue left is of (a) lead nitrate (b) nitrogen oxide (c) lead oxide (d) oxygen gas

Answer: (a) A reaction in which two or more reactants combine to form a single product is known as a combination reaction.

Statement 2:  The burning of magnesium is an example of ‘Y’ reaction. In a chemical reaction, reactants are converted into products. The conversion of reactants into products in a chemical reaction is often accompanied by some features which can be observed easily. These easily observed features which take place as a result of chemical reactions are known as characteristics of chemical reactions. Some important characteristics of chemical reactions are:  (I) Evolution of heat  (II) Formation of a precipitate (III) Change in color (IV) Change in temperature (V) Change in state

Case Study 3: Chemical reactions and equations are fundamental concepts in chemistry that help us understand the transformation of substances. A chemical reaction involves the rearrangement of atoms to form new substances with different properties. Redox reactions are those reactions in which oxidation and reduction occur Simultaneously. A redox reaction is made up of two half reactions. In the first half reaction, oxidation takes place and in second half reaction, reduction occurs. Oxidation is a process in which a substance loses electrons and in reduction, a substance gains electrons. The substance which gains electrons is reduced and acts as an oxidising agent. Mahatma Gandhi’s thoughts on Satyagraha

‘It is said of “passive resistance” that it is the weapon of the weak, but the power which is the subject of the article can be used only by the strong. This power is not passive resistance; indeed, it calls for intense activity. The movement in South Africa was not passive but active….’ Satyagraha is not physical force. A Satyagrahi does not inflict, pain on the adversary; he does not seek his destruction…. In the use of Satyagraha, there is no ill-will whatever.’

‘Satyagraha is pure soul-force. Truth is the very substance of the soul. That is why this force is called Satyagraha. The soul is informed with knowledge. In it burns the flame of love … Nonviolence is the supreme Dharma …’

‘It is certain that India cannot rival Britain or Europe in force of arms. The British worship the war-god and they can all of them become, as they are becoming, bearers of arms. The hundreds of millions in India can never carry arms. They have made the religion of non-violence their own …’

One could win the battle through non-violence and this could be done by appealing to the conscience of the oppressor. Also, the people had to be persuaded to see the truth instead of being forced to accept truth through the soul-force.

Gandhiji described passive resistance as a weapon of the weak and did not exclude the use of physical force or violence for the purpose of gaining one’s end. He explained passive resistance as the concept to fight against something evil but never hurting the opponent.

Nationalism in India

Modern nationalism in Europe come to be associated with the formation of nation-states. It also meant a change in people’s understanding of who they were and what defined their identity and sense of belonging. New symbols and icons, new songs and ideas forged new links and redefined the boundaries of communities. In most countries the making of this new national identity was a long process. How did this consciousness emerge in India?

In India and as in many other colonies, the growth of modern nationalism is intimately connected to the anti-colonial movement. People began discovering their unity in the process of their struggle with colonialism. The sense of being oppressed under colonialism provided a shared bond that tied many different groups together. But each class and group felt the effects of colonialism differently, their experiences were varied and their notions of freedom were not always the same. The Congress under Mahatma Gandhi tried to forge these groups together within one movement. But the unity did not emerge without conflict.

People understood the nation as a community of people formed on the basis of a combination of shared features such as language, history, ethnicity. culture and/or territory. Thus, a nation refers to the collective identity of a group of people understood as defined by those features.

(ii) Question Paper is divided into five Sections – Section A, B, C, D and E .

(iii) In Section– A question number 1 to 18 are Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and question number 19 & 20 are Assertion-Reason based questions of Answer (VSA) type questions of 2 marks each.

(v) In Section– C question number 26 to 31 are Short Answer (SA) type questions carrying 3 marks each.

(vi) In Section– D question number 32 to 35 are Long Answer (LA) type Questions carrying 5 marks each.

(vii) In Section– E question number 36 to 38 are Case Study based questions Carrying 4 marks each. Internal choice is provided in 2 marks question in each case study.

(viii)There is no overall choice. However, an internal choice has been provided in 2 questions in Section- B , 2 questions in Section- C , 2 questions in Section- D and 3 questions in Section- E .

(ix) Draw neat diagram wherever required. Take pie =22/7 wherever required not stated.

(x) Use of calculators is not allowed .
