Electronic Audio Experiments - Hypersleep

The Hypersleep is a solid-state analog reverberator. It evokes the immediate acoustic reflections of metal and tile, but with a darker timbre and a ringing, fluttering decay—forgoing epic atmospherics in favor of liminality.

At the heart of the Hypersleep is the obsolete MN3011 bucket brigade device. Unlike other BBDs with one input and one output, the MN3011 uses an array of staggered delay outputs to produce a smeared-out echo. Feeding this echo back upon itself produces a reverberant texture. The reverb length can be modulated via the onboard LFO for atypical chorus and vibrato effects, or the haunting sound of a room changing size in real time.

Electronic Audio Experiments Hypersleep V2 Analog Reverb + Modulation

Electronic Audio Experiments Hypersleep V2

The Electronic Audio Experiments Hypersleep V2 is an analog reverb. But – some may say – “don’t you need springs to make an analog reverb?” Well, not if you are after something that’s not necessarily vintage-sounding or realistic.

The Hypersleep is based on the unusual MN3011 bucket-brigade device, obsolete to the point of being cool again, just like 8-bit music. It works like this:

The MN3011 uses an array of staggered delay outputs to produce a smeared-out echo. Feeding this echo back upon itself produces a reverberant texture.

The pedal also features a modulation circuit to add extra character or wavey motion.

Hypersleep V2 offers upgraded silent switching, power and filter scheme improvements, and a more finely tuned feedback control.

The Electronic Audio Experiments Hypersleep is probably not the right reverb for those looking for a realistic space emulator, but the niche of character seekers should find something quite unique in this device.

All Hypersleep units carry a lifetime warranty tied to the original owner.

  • Page 4 Warning: Hypersleep V1 units have a current draw of 180mA and will be dam- aged if a supply other than 9V is used. Use standard shielded 1/4” cables to patch the Hypersleep into a pedal chain. The input jack is on the top right and the output jack is on the top left.
  • Page 5 5 Detailed Operating Instructions At the heart of Hypersleep is a clock controlled directly by the Space knob. In turn, this clock sets the delay/reverb time for the BBD. The lowest settings yield a slapback echo with a blurry decay. As the knob is turned clockwise, the echoes begin to separate and smear out, until the delay time of the longest tap reaches a maximum of approximately 200 milliseconds.
