This may be seen considering the career of students in schools and colleges, and of men engaged in the business of life. The student who cheats in an examination may, if he escapes detection, gain a few marks more than he would otherwise have got. But what is the probable result? He learns thereby to trust to dishonest means of passing his further examinations, and neglects hard work, the only sure means of success, Guess, even if his dishonesty remains undetected, he is likely to be outstripped by his more honest rival, and in addition, he exposes himself to the risk of an ignominious conviction, which will ruin his reputation and surely wound the hearts of parents and friends.

The effects of dishonesty are much the same in the case of clerks, merchants, government servants, and others. They may suddenly make themselves rich by dishonest means. But wealth so obtained is as a rule rapidly squandered, and to regain resource is likely to be had again to new acts of dishonesty. Thus the dishonest man lives all through his life in continual dread that his misdeeds may at any moment be revealed in the light of the day. Success at the beginning of his career only tempts him to become corrupt on a larger scale, and the end is generally disgrace and punishment.

So far we have been considering the question merely from the point of view of material success, and have seen that the dishonest man is very unlikely to succeed in life. But even if by some rare chance he should manage to escape detection to the end and die famous and wealthy, he must nevertheless all through his life suffer pain through fear of detection and consciousness of his own baseness. Had he been an honest man, he would probably have won still more wealth and honor in the eyes of the world and would have been spending the reproaches of a guilty conscience.

Honest people are respected and trusted upon because they are known to stand by their truth. Without honesty, the world would be a bad and sad place to live in. people who constantly lie not only lose their friends but their reputation since no one likes to associate with dishonest characters.

It’s important to always tell the truth because this way we will lead a good and upright life. Some of the dishonest acts are telling lies, cheating, corruption, and smuggling. If all of us can stay away from these acts the world, would be a better place where we all will live in harmony and trust each other

Honesty is an important virtue that we should all aim to have. It helps to steer us in the right direction in life and helps us avoid criminal activities. An honest person is of good character and lives a satisfied and contented life because his conscience is clear.

An honest person’s character is dignified and graceful. You may achieve what you want by lying, but your actions will always haunt you. Be honest and everything will turn out well for you and you will come to realize that truth.

He should not only resist the temptation to get rich quickly by being dishonest but be ready to face the suffering and loss that may be caused by honesty. This is the point of view of morality. The proverb, however, recommends honesty not as a moral ideal, but as a practical policy. We are called upon, to be honest, not because it is moral t0 be so, but because it is profitable to be so.

From one point of view, it is indeed true that honesty is the best policy. Consider, for example, a shopkeeper who, in order to get easy and quick profits, sells things at higher prices and cheats his customers in other ways. He may seem to prosper for some time, but, sooner or later, his customers are bound to see through his tricks and cease to patronize him. On the other hand, an honest shopkeeper is likely to flourish gradually and steadily, attracting more and more customers because of his reputation for honesty. It is true that several black marketers and they’re like have amassed huge fortunes. But they have to spend large chunks of their illicit gains on trying to prevent the detection of their crimes. Besides, they live in constant dread of being found out. It is generally true that dishonesty creates more problems than it solves.

Honesty is the cornerstone of character. If one is found wanting in honesty, he will be found lacking in character as well.

Honesty is not always the easiest way out of a situation. However, for the brave-hearted who do not seek ways -out of situations, it is the only way to deal with a situation or a crisis. Often being honest can mean coming under the wrath of others. There might be the fear of a backlash but one must keep in mind that in the end truth always prevails and honesty is the best policy. It might not be the easiest thing: being honest, but it is the only thing to be.

Sometimes when faced with dire consequences one is inclined to be dishonest because it takes courage, to be honest. While dishonesty may provide an easy exit out of a sticky situation, it is just a matter of time before the lies catch up. When that happens, you lose your credibility and people mistrust you forever. A politician who fails to deliver on the promises he has made to the people during the election campaign loses the people’s faith and stands to lose the elections the next time around. It is difficult to trust someone you have lost faith in.

There are lies and then there are white lies. White lies are perceived as lies that are harmless hence people are often prone to using them. Being honest is difficult especially when you have something to lose like maybe a job, a promotion, the love and respect of a loved one. Taking the help of a white lie seems the easier way out. However, one lie leads to another, and, before long you are entangled in a web of lies that you find increasingly difficult to come out of. Honesty may be a difficult virtue to maintain but it is the only right thing to do.

However, situations don’t always call for brutal honesty. If a friend has bad breath, there is no reason to embarrass her with the truth by telling her she has bad breath. Situations like this, when the truth can hurt someone’s feelings call for prudence. A white lie said at this point to avoid hurting the friend’s feelings would not be in the best interests of the friend. The best way to deal with this situation would be to play down the brutality of the truth. Instead of outright saying,” hey your breath smells awful’ one could instead say “hey nothing a little mint won’t cure”.

The truth however hard to say must be adhered to always. In the long run, it is the best policy. Over a period of time, one will gain a reputation for being honest. And this will prove to be the building block of success. An honest person will be sought for his opinion. An honest man will always receive more responsibility at home and at work. One must remember always that, “To err is human and to forgive divine”. So when you have erred coming clean is the only option. You may be punished for it, you might have to bear the consequences of it, but if you are honest you will earn the forgiveness and respect of those around you. Honesty is undoubtedly the best policy.

The use of the word ‘policy’ gave this saying flexibility, in that a person during the course of his life could adapt different ways if he felt that honesty was not beneficial to his interests. A policy is changeable, unlike a principle that is not. You cannot change the principle even if it causes loss. You suffer and even lay down your life for a principle. On the other hand, policy 1s just a matter of convenience. It is more businesslike and more inclined to think in terms of profit and loss.

Should then honesty restrict itself to just being a policy or should it be made into a principle 2. The answer to this question is that honesty should be made into a principle of life. In the long run, honesty proves to be the best wealth. A person possessing it acquires the strength of character and high esteem in the eyes of society.

Honesty is also necessary for real happiness. Dishonesty may bring wealth and influence but it can never make a person happy. At no point in his life will a dishonest person be able to free himself from the consequences of his actions. Hence he will never be truly happy and content. Fear of being caught and punished for his dishonest acts haunts him and he is never totally free from it.

Similarly, a public servant needs honesty. You cannot become a great leader without honesty. This virtue gives him the strength to do his duty towards the citizens of the country. As a dishonest leader, you may become rich and powerful. But there is every possibility that your actions will catch up with you and make you suffer. The cloud of dishonesty may hide the Sun of honesty for a period of time. It cannot however hide it forever. This proves the greatness of honesty from which no one can escape.

Mental peace

Anyone who has told a lie knows the uncomfortable feelings of guilt that may soon follow the fib. Not being honest can often have unintended consequences, and if those consequences are worse than we anticipate, we are prone to feeling incredibly distressed. There’s no way around this; even telling half-truths can actually be worse than lying outright, studies from the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology show. “Partial confessors” feel higher regret, guilt and shame than do “full confessors” of a lie. Consequently, other research points to improved physical and mental health following reductions in lie-telling. It’s a no-brainer; honesty is the best policy. So, stick with honesty, and your mental health will remain in much better shape.

Slippery slope

Lying is a tangled web, and it’s hard to stop lying once you’ve started. Studies done in the experimental psychology department of University College London show that lying one time makes it physically easier to lie in the future. This is because while we experience initial conflict when trodding on the truth, this discomfort subsides over time, making it easier to be dishonest and serve our own self-interests. Yet, the more lies we tell, the harder it is to unravel the web; the odds of getting caught are high, which means we’re risking severely negative consequences if discovered – like ruining our reputation and reducing the chance of others trusting us in the future

Honesty = reliability

Society is built on trust. We go to stores expecting clerks to give us the true prices of merchandise. We believe food is okay to eat when there’s an expiration date listed by a reliable company. Trustworthy communities allow people to work together, communicate effectively and openly engage with “ the other .” Building trust by separating fact from fiction is especially important in a post-pandemic era, when communities were and still may be wary about receiving vaccines. This shows how if honesty weren’t a basic tenet of society, whole chunks of our social fabric would crumble. Look no further than the Flint water crisis in Michigan in 2014 as an example of dishonesty posing health risks to society; thousands of people were lied to about the unhealthy, lead-ridden state of their water, and many got sick as a result. This also applies on an individual level; lying kills relationships , where honesty protects integrity. Bearing this in mind, honesty is the best policy – it is also the necessary one.

Other Policies are Better

Self-indulgent

While honesty is often hailed as a virtue, our motivation for truth-telling is often more self-serving than it is pure. Sitting on a pent-up thought can be difficult to do, and we may feel great relief in letting go of our secrets, no matter at what cost. In fact, social media has exacerbated this self-indulgence by giving people a platform through which to share. It may also force intimacy of their every innermost thoughts and feelings – ones that everyone else may not want to hear about . Rather than accepting from the get-go that honesty is the best policy, we should evaluate every situation and question whether our motives are pure in telling the truth.

Little white lie

She doesn’t really want to hear that she looks fat; he would like to continue believing that his joke was funny. The white lie – a small lie told to avoid hurting a person’s feelings – originated somewhere, and for good reason: Not everyone is prepared to hear the truth. In fact, honesty can wound the people closest to us ; sometimes, it doubles as a subtle form of assault, by allowing us to unload our angry feelings onto our loved ones through lashing out with true – yet brutal – criticism. In the long run, this kind of honesty may harm our relationships more than it will benefit them.

Benefits of deception

People often derive joy from being deceived. Kids adore hearing stories about Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy; movie-goers enjoy films the most when the acting is believable. In fact, celebrities win prestigious awards for faking identities and emotions. In addition to the entertainment factor, however, deception often puts us at ease. Imagine the panic that would have ensued if, for example, Americans had known how close they were to war during the Cuban Missile Crisis . In fact, research on dishonesty in the workplace corroborates the important and calming effects of lying; it found that duplicity can both help breed trust during difficult times and boost morale. While lying may not be the best policy, it benefits us enough to lose the bad rap.

The Bottom Line: Complete honesty can preserve relationships and keep society peaceful, yet there are instances in which a little fibbing may be required to put out potential social fires. What’s your best policy – honesty, or something else?

According to Rogers (162), honesty is the best policy because it brings forth mental peace. A person who is honest does not develop a guilty conscience or carry the burden of remembering the lies they said in the past. Additionally, being honest cultivates a relationship of mutual trust between people. It shows the maturity of character and ability to stand for a just cause no matter the circumstances. Given that people need one another for material, moral and emotional support, being honest builds strong social and interpersonal relationships which come in handy during moments of difficulties. Dishonest people never get a second chance to convince their victims that they have changed their manners. Thus, it can be quite difficult for a dishonest person to get help from friends, families and colleagues if they lied before. Despite the existence of a myriad of justifications for honesty, some people feel that being dishonest can be helpful under certain circumstances. According to Barbara and Andrew (86), lying can be ethical if it is done to avert a potentially dangerous consequence. For example, lying to robbers is not necessarily bad if doing so can make them change their minds favorably. From my personal experience, I have always found myself in several situations where I had to lie albeit unwillingly. In one occasion, I forgot to switch off the oven after cooking. As a result, the fireplace overheated causing nearby objects to burn. Luckily, the fire was put off before causing any serious damage. When my father came, he was very angry with me. Knowing that he could punish me ruthlessly, I lied that the fire was caused by an electric fault. He forgave me but I have never forgiven myself for lying. Funny enough, I have never had courage to tell my father the truth. Rogers (160) refutes the notion that honesty is the best policy by arguing that there are situations when a lie can save relationships. He gives the example of employment relationships where workers have to make small lies occasionally to get positive recommendations or avoid penalties. In strict organizations, being too honest can lead to dismissal or negative performance ratings. This may compel employees to be dishonest even though that might not be their character. Barbara and Andrew (84) have cautioned that lying too often in the workplace can lead to poor performance and inability to make a sound judgment about oneself. In view of the arguments for and against the debate, this paper takes the view that honesty is a value that should be embraced seriously at all times. Although certain situations may compel people to be dishonest, they should not nurture a spirit of dishonesty because it is not a virtue. Most importantly, people should at all times behave and act in a manner that reinforces a spirit of trust and cordial relationships regardless of the prevailing circumstances.

Debating Covid’s Origins: A Lab or a Market?

Why the Pandemic Probably Started in a Lab, in 5 Key Points

The world must not continue to bear the intolerable risks of research with the potential to cause pandemics.

Re “ Why Covid Probably Started in a Lab ,” by Alina Chan (Opinion guest essay, June 9):

Dr. Chan makes a case for a laboratory origin of Covid-19. Richly illustrated with animated graphics online, the text proposes five main arguments to accuse a team led by Dr. Shi Zhengli, a scientist based in Wuhan, China, of having created the virus causing Covid in her lab, letting it leak, and hiding information linking the pandemic’s origin to her work. Dr. Chan further implied that Dr. Shi’s collaborators could also be hiding incriminating evidence.

These accusations are very serious, yet the case made by Dr. Chan rests entirely on speculation. Critical facts are ignored, such as the presence of live wild animals involved in the emergence of SARS in the market where many of the first people known to have gotten Covid worked or shopped. In my view, proper scientific analyses, which a majority of experts agree support a natural origin, are misrepresented or inappropriately dismissed by Dr. Chan.

While the origin of the pandemic is still not known with certainty, Dr. Chan has identified her culprits without any actual evidence.

Based on the comments in response to this well-presented and compelling article, it appears that many still insist on putting their heads in the sand about the source of the Covid pandemic. They insist the article does not “prove” the origin of the pandemic to be the lab in Wuhan.

However, it should be noted that the headline of the article includes the word “probably,” which is probably as close as we will ever get to knowing the source of the pandemic, because the Chinese government certainly will never come clean about it if it is in any way at fault.
