  • On Jan-08-2021, UPSC Conducted Civil Services Mains Exam (CSM-2020)’s Essay Paper (Because of the Corona lockdown, the exam cycle is running late).

No Essay topic on women empowerment since 2017 Finally makes a re appearance in relation to patriarchy
Artificial intelligence asked in context of job skill -2019 Artificial intelligence and technology asked in context of international relations
2018, 2019- Majority of the papers focused on philosophy, ethics abstract quotation type of titles – Same pattern continues. Main challenge is the entire Section-A is devoted to such philosophy, ethics, quotation essays So whether you like it or hate it, you have to attempt at least one of them.

– Whereas, all the conventional areas (culture, women, technology, economy-social justice) are ask in section-B- So even if you are good at 2 of them you can attempt maximum one in section-B!

  • New aspirants need to take care not to get brainwashed by one sided analysis of coaching-classes that “ just because so many philosophical topics are asked so you should blindly take philosophy as an optional subject And automatically you will get a ticket to IAS selection! ” – As per the latest annual report of UPSC uploaded on their website, the number of UPSC selection from Philosophy was 53 candidates among 1056 candidates selected in 2017 i.e. 7% (btw, It seems UPSC uploads the annual reports with a lot of delay so as to avoid controversies about selections)

What to do for Essay Preparation/Strategy/Booklist?

  • In the market there are lot of readymade books available for the essay. However, as far as the Civil Service exam is concerned they’re not very useful.
  • you have to manually gather the content and cultivate the skill for essay writing. Common resources include:
  • Last 3 years Yojana and Kurukshetra magazines: They are available in English, Hindi and other Vernacular languages. They can be downloaded for free from their official website: http://yojana.gov.in/Recent_archive_2018.asp (Tip: Replace the year in URL, when you want to access previous years). There is no need to read each and every article, at least go through the preface / Editor’s Note in the beginning of each PDF.
  • Last 3-5 years economic surveys available for free at https://indiabudget.gov.in/bspeecha.asp No need to read entire PDFs, just the introductions and conclusions of each chapter.
  • IGNOU MPS-003 module. Available for free at https://egyankosh.ac.in
  • NCERT textbooks, especially those related to Sociology, Political Science and World History.
  • Newspaper Columns: English (TheHindu or IndianExpress), Hindi (JanSatta). In the vernacular language newspapers (e.g. Divya-Bhaskar Gujarati etc)= the quality of the column is not worthy of civil service exam essays.
  • Ethics (GS Paper 4) related preparation would also come handy here.

UPSC Mains 2024: 5 tips for effective preparation

Here are some tips and tricks that will help to ace upsc mains exam..

Listen to Story

upsc mains essay previous papers

The UPSC Mains is a critical competitive exam that marks the second stage of the Civil Services Exam in India. As a predecessor to the interview process that determines the eligibility of candidates to hold civil service positions in India, the UPSC Mains consists of nine papers in total: two qualifying language papers, an essay paper, four General Studies (GS) papers, and two papers on the optional subject chosen. The consolidated marks from these papers amount to 1750.

As the UPSC Mains tests individuals on a wide variety of topics, ranging from Indian heritage and history, Indian polity, governance, technology, environment, ethics, integrity, etc., it becomes important to have a comprehensive strategy to enhance preparation to ace the UPSC Mains.

1. UNDERSTAND THE UPSC MAINS SYLLABUS

As UPSC Mains involves 9 papers that span multiple topics, such as history, culture, technology, governance, ethics, and the like, and also involve essay questions on topics that are factual and philosophical, it becomes necessary for aspirants to understand the range of topics included in the syllabus. A great way to enhance understanding is to connect the topics to real-world situations and events, which helps analyse such topics.

2. DESIGN A COMPREHENSIVE BUT ACHIEVABLE STUDY PLAN

Through familiarisation with the syllabus, it becomes important for aspirants to set achievable daily, weekly, and monthly goals to track progress and explore areas of improvement. Organising a study plan in such a manner where one's weak subjects are prioritised and strengths are highlighted becomes a proactive approach toward establishing a balanced study structure that covers all areas effectively.

3. EMPHASISE THE OPTIONAL SUBJECT

As optional subjects are significant determinants of the subsequent positive results of a UPSC candidate, it is important to choose the subject accordingly. Selecting a subject based on personal interest and expertise, and overall relevance to the UPSC exam, can be beneficial for increasing scores.

4. CONSISTENTLY PRACTICE WRITING ANSWERS

Though writing is a key requisite in UPSC Mains, the art of writing is another area to focus on. Due to the highly stressful environment and the pressure for candidates to analyse and interpret the questions, and accordingly, recall and express their thoughts and ideas during the exam, it becomes important to focus on writing value-added answers to increase their chances of getting good marks to qualify for the next stage.

5. ATTEND TO ONE'S PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH

As the UPSC Mains is a source of stress for many individuals, right from preparation to writing the exam, it becomes crucial for candidates to look after their physical and mental health. Individuals must engage in physical exercise (either low or high effort), as such movement helps enhance concentration through increased stamina and drive.

Staying mentally fit by partaking in one's hobbies and interacting with family and friends is also important to reduce stress and enhance performance.

Essay Paper UPSC 2022 (Mains): Question Paper and Analysis

Last updated on September 16, 2022 by ClearIAS Team

Essay Paper UPSC 2022

The Essay Paper in UPSC CSE 2022 was easy compared to previous years. Please find the questions in the Essay Paper of the UPSC 2022 Civil Services Mains Examination (written).

UPSC conducted the Essay Paper , as part of the Civil Services Main Exam 2022 on 16-09-2022. The question paper was not as shocking as last year.

There were 8 Essay topics, out of which candidates were asked to write on two topics in 3 hours.

Candidates were supposed to answer about 1000 words for each essay (about 10-12 pages).

Table of Contents

Essay Paper UPSC 2022 Instructions

  • Total Marks: 250 marks, Time duration: 3 hours.
  • The essay must be written in the medium authorized in the admission certificate which must be stated clearly on the cover of this question-cum-answer (QCA) booklet in the space provided.
  • No marks will be given for answers written in a medium other than the authorized one.
  • Word limit, as specified, should be adhered to.
  • Any page or portion of the page left blank, must be struck off clearly.

Essay Question Paper – UPSC Civil Services Main Exam (Written) 2022

Write two essays, choosing one topic from each of the following Sections A and B, in about 1000-1200 words each:

  • Forests are the best case studies for economic excellence.
  • Poets are the unacknowledged legislators of the world.
  • History is a series of victories won by the scientific man over the romantic man.
  • A ship in the harbour is safe but that is not what a ship is for.
  • The time to repair the roof is when the sun is shining.
  • You cannot step twice in the same river.
  • Smile is the chosen vehicle for all ambiguities.
  • Just because you have a choice, it does not mean that any of them has to be right.

UPSC , as always, has ensured that the essay topics were much different from the GS questions.

A philosophical theme is clearly evident in most of the essay topics in Section A as well as Section B. This was the case in 2020 and 2021 as well. It is a clue about what UPSC expects from the essay paper.

Rather than asking candidates to write on topics most aspirants are familiar with or trained with, UPSC is now evaluating the essay writing skills of aspirants by providing them with abstract or philosophical topics.

This year, most of the topics were either proverbs or famous quotes.

All 8 topics presented this year will test the spontaneous thinking, comprehension, writing skills, and time management of aspirants.

Thinkers, Philosophers, and their Quotes

Let’s analyse the source of some of the question topics.

POETS ARE THE UNACKNOWLEDGED LEGISLATORS OF THE WORLD

This essay topic is one of the best-known and most frequently quoted lines from the Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822).

Shelley thinks that poets can institute laws and create new materials for knowledge, determining the role of poets as legislators.

Shelley’s account of poetic language seeks to find an order to the chaos, which, possibly, Shelley sees in human society: the mess that only poets can fathom.

Therefore, he thinks, the poets’ enhanced poetic language can re-institute order in human society.

A SHIP IN HARBOUR IS SAFE BUT THAT IS NOT WHAT A SHIP IS FOR

This essay topic is connected with John A Shedd , an author and professor, who is attributed to this quote. Reference: his book Salt from My Attic , a collection of quotes and sayings (1928).

This phrase means, that getting out of your comfort zone is key to experiencing new things and broadening your horizons.

Only taking risks helps us grow as people—to either achieve our goals or do the things we’ve always wanted to do.

THE TIME  TO REPAIR THE ROOF IS WHEN THE SUN IS SHINING

This essay topic was connected with John F. Kennedy. In his 1962 State of the Union Address, John F. Kennedy declared, “The best time to repair the roof is when the sun is shining”.

The primary message of the quote is fixing a leak is best done when the weather is good, rather than when it is not.

Ideally, you should begin the work of fixing the roof as soon after the leak was found. The first sunny day would be ideal. It is not easy to fix a roof when it is raining.

This statement is being used to remind us to do the right things at the right time. It also points us to take the advantage of favourable time.

YOU CAN NOT STEP TWICE IN THE SAME RIVER

This essay topic was quoted by Heraclitus, a Greek philosopher born in 544 b.c.

This means that you cannot step into the same river twice because the flow of the river will change each second. You will also change each second.

It is not possible to repeat past experiences, as time changes all things. You won’t get the exact experience twice. You need to live in the present and enjoy each moment.

A SMILE IS A CHOSEN VEHICLE FOR ALL AMBIGUITIES

This essay topic was quoted by Herman Melville, an American novelist.

JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE A CHOICE DOES NOT MEAN THAT ANY OF THEM HAS TO BE RIGHT

This essay topic was quoted by Norton Juster, an American academic, architect, and writer in his book The Phantom Tollbooth

What should aspirants preparing for next year do for an essay paper?

First of all, you should take the essay paper seriously.

Unless properly trained, it is not easy to write 10-12 pages on an abstract or philosophical topic.

You need to polish your comprehension and analytical skills.

Read different kinds of essays – particularly philosophical essays.

Give stress to the thoughts of philosophers like Immanuel Kant, Thomas Aquinas, John Locke, Friedrich Niche, Karl Marx etc. Start writing essays on famous quotes.

Also, be prepared to write essays touching on other areas like society, politics, economy, or technology. UPSC is known for surprises.

Remember that there is nothing like a constant trend with respect to UPSC questions.

What you get by analysing the previous year’s question papers are clues. And only those are what you need from UPSC questions!

UPSC Botany Syllabus 2024 for Mains Papers I and II

by Vajiram & Ravi

The Botany syllabus for UPSC Mains is designed for candidates who have a strong foundation in plant sciences and wish to opt for this subject as their optional. It covers a broad range of topics, from the fundamental concepts of plant anatomy and physiology to more advanced areas such as genetics, biotechnology, and ecology. The syllabus is structured to test both theoretical knowledge and practical application, ensuring that candidates can demonstrate a deep understanding of the subject matter in relation to the demands of the Civil Services Examination.

UPSC Botany Optional Syllabus

The Botany optional in UPSC consists of two papers—Paper I and Paper II—each carrying 250 marks. These papers are structured to evaluate the candidate’s grasp of botanical concepts and their analytical skills. Paper I is divided into two sections, each containing four questions. Candidates must answer Question 1 from Section 1 and Question 5 from Section 2, as these are compulsory. For the remaining six questions, candidates can strategically choose those where they feel most confident, allowing them to maximize their score by selecting the questions they can answer best.

UPSC Botany Syllabus for Paper 1

Paper 1 of the UPSC Botany syllabus covers foundational concepts in plant biology, including plant anatomy, taxonomy, physiology, and ecology. This paper requires a strong grasp of basic botanical principles and their applications. It forms the backbone for advanced topics in the subject.

Paper I Syllabus

UPSC Botany Syllabus for Paper 2

Paper 2 focuses on applied botany, emphasizing the economic and social relevance of plants. This paper also addresses plant pathology, tissue culture, and the impact of climate change on vegetation. It is designed to test the candidate's knowledge of how botanical science can be applied to solve real-world problems.

Maximize Your UPSC Score in GS Paper 3 with Abhyaas Mains 2024

Abhyaas Mains 2024

As the UPSC Mains draw closer, the real challenge isn’t just about covering the syllabus-it’s about mastering it with precision and clarity. With only a month left, it becomes essential to sharpen your analytical skills and ensure that your answers in General Studies Paper 3 are not only comprehensive but also well-articulated and precise.

This blog will guide you through strategic preparation for GS Paper 3 and demonstrate how Abhyaas Mains 2024 can play a pivotal role in your journey toward UPSC success.

Maximize Your Score in GS Paper 3

To excel in GS Paper 3, it’s crucial to focus on the sections that hold the most significance and ensure your answers are backed by robust data and clear examples. Here’s how you can strategically approach each topic:

A) Economics

In the past five years (2019-2023), Economics has contributed 41 questions to GS Paper 3, with a focus on several key areas. Questions have frequently examined government schemes and policies , such as PM KISAN, MGNREGA, and the National Health Mission, assessing their effectiveness in driving economic growth.

Another significant theme has been banking and financial reforms , including the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) and reforms within the banking sector, alongside the role of the RBI.

Agriculture and allied activities also feature prominently, with questions on Minimum Support Prices (MSP), farm subsidies, and reforms in agricultural marketing. Lastly, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have been a recurring focus, with questions evaluating India's progress toward achieving economic inclusivity and sustainability.

Preparation Strategy:

  • Incorporate Statistics and Examples: Use relevant data from authoritative sources like the Economic Survey, Union Budget, and NSSO reports to substantiate your arguments. This adds credibility to your answers and demonstrates your understanding of current economic realities. For example, while discussing the impact of government schemes, back up your points with statistics on their reach and effectiveness.
  • Reference Constitutional Articles, Committees and Policies: Linking economic policies to Constitutional provisions (e.g., Article 39 for equitable distribution of wealth) strengthens your answers. Additionally, referencing government schemes and policies, such as PM KISAN, provides depth and context, showing that you understand both the legal and practical frameworks guiding economic governance.
  • Highlight Best Practices and Case Studies: Drawing from successful examples in India or globally helps illustrate your points more effectively. For instance, referencing the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) as a case study of agricultural insurance can enrich your answer on risk management in agriculture. Highlighting economic experts' views can also provide a well-rounded perspective.

B) Internal Security

Internal Security contributed 20 questions between 2019 and 2023, with a strong emphasis on key issues. Cyber security threats have been a major theme, with questions assessing India's readiness to counter cyber-attacks and safeguard its digital infrastructure.

Another crucial area has been terrorism and insurgency , with a focus on counter-terrorism measures, insurgency in the Northeast, and the effectiveness of government policies like UAPA and the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Additionally, border management has been an important theme, covering the challenges India faces on its borders with Pakistan and China, and the role of paramilitary forces in maintaining security.

  • Understand Current Challenges: Stay updated on current internal security challenges and the government’s responses. This includes cyber security measures, counter-terrorism strategies, and anti-insurgency operations.
  • Support with Data and Case Studies: Use data and examples to strengthen your arguments. Where relevant, link security issues to governance and international relations for a comprehensive perspective.

C) Science and Technology

Science and Technology has featured prominently in GS Paper 3, contributing 17 questions between 2019 and 2023. A dominant theme has been artificial intelligence (AI) and automation , with questions exploring the impact of AI on sectors such as healthcare, education, and governance, as well as associated ethical concerns.

Biotechnology and genetic engineering have also been recurring topics, particularly the application of biotechnology in agriculture (e.g., GM crops) and healthcare, along with discussions on ethical implications. Furthermore, space technology has garnered attention, with a focus on India's space missions like Chandrayaan and Mangalyaan, and ISRO’s international collaborations, emphasizing their strategic importance for India.

  • Stay Updated: Focus on understanding the latest advancements in AI, biotechnology, space technology, and other relevant fields. Government initiatives and their societal impact should be a core part of your preparation.
  • Use Visual Aids: Utilize diagrams and flowcharts to explain complex concepts, ensuring your answers are both clear and impactful.

D) Environment & Disaster Management

Environment & Disaster Management has contributed 22 questions over the past five years, reflecting a range of critical issues. A significant portion of the questions focused on climate change and global agreements , exploring India’s role in international accords such as the Paris Agreement and the effectiveness of the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC).

Biodiversity conservation has also been a recurring theme, with questions addressing the conservation of endangered species, the role of protected areas like tiger reserves, and initiatives like CAMPA. Additionally, disaster preparedness and response have been vital topics, with an emphasis on the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the effectiveness of early warning systems in mitigating disaster risks.

  • Link Topics to Policies and Agreements: Stay updated with the latest developments in environmental science, global agreements like the Paris Agreement, and government policies. Highlight the interconnections between environmental issues and other GS papers, such as their impact on the economy and governance.
  • Use Maps and Diagrams: Incorporate maps to depict geographical aspects of environmental challenges and use diagrams to clarify disaster management strategies.

PYQs and Toppers' Copy Analysis

A critical step in refining your preparation is analyzing Previous Years' Questions (PYQs) and reviewing Toppers' Copies . This process provides valuable insights into exam patterns and effective answer-writing techniques.

  • Review PYQs: Analyzing the questions from previous years helps identify recurring themes and important topics that you should prioritize. This ensures that you are focusing on areas with the highest likelihood of being tested.
  • Study Toppers' Copies: Observing how successful candidates structured their answers, incorporated key terms, and presented their arguments provides practical insights into effective answer writing. Adopting these techniques can significantly enhance the quality of your own responses.
