ஃபர்ஹானா Review: சுவாரஸ்யம் கொடுத்ததா த்ரில்லர் திரைக்கதை?

சென்னை ஐஸ்ஹவுஸின் நடுத்தர முஸ்லிம் குடும்பத்தைச் சேர்ந்த பெண் ஃபர்ஹானா (ஐஸ்வர்யா ராஜேஷ்). தனது கணவர் கரீம் (ஜித்தன் ரமேஷ்) நடத்தி வரும் செருப்பு கடையின் வியாபாரம் கைகொடுக்காததால் வேலைக்கு செல்ல முடிவெடுக்கிறார். அதன்படி கால் சென்டர் ஒன்றில் வேலைக்குச் சேர்ந்த பின் ஃபர்ஹானாவின் குடும்ப பொருளாதார சூழல் முன்னேற்றம் காண்கிறது. இதனிடையே தனது குழந்தைக்கு உடனடியாக ஆப்ரேஷன் செய்ய வேண்டிய கட்டாயத்தில் தள்ளப்படும் ஃபர்ஹானாவுக்கு மேலும் பணம் தேவைப்படுவதால், அவர் வேலை செய்யும் கால் சென்டரில் 3 மடங்கு அதிகம் இன்சென்டிவ் கொடுக்கும் மற்றொரு பிரிவில் பணியாற்ற ஒப்புக்கொள்கிறார். அந்த வேலை ஃபர்ஹானாவின் வாழ்க்கையை எப்படியெல்லாம் புரட்டிப்போடுகிறது என்பது தான் படத்தின் மீதிக்கதை.

‘ஒருநாள் கூத்து’, ‘மான்ஸ்டர்’ படங்களை இயக்கிய நெல்சன் வெங்கடேசன் இம்முறை இஸ்லாமிய குடும்பத்தைச் சேர்ந்த பெண்ணின் வழியாக முகமறியாதவர்களுடனான இணையவெளித் தொடர்பு உரையாடல்களில் இருக்கும் ஆபத்துகளையும், மனம் விட்டு பேசுவதன் முக்கியத்துவத்தையும் படைப்பாக்கியிருக்கிறார். இஸ்லாமியர்கள் கணிசமாக வாழும் சென்னை ஐஸ்ஹவுஸின் நெருக்கடியான வீடுகளுக்குள் பிரவேசிக்கும் முஸ்லீம் பெண் ஒருவரின் அன்றாட வாழ்க்கையின் சுழலோட்டத்தையும், அவரைச் சுற்றி வரையப்பட்டிருக்கும் கோடுகளின் எல்லைகளையும் படம் பதிவு செய்கிறது. அந்தப் பெண்ணின் அக-மன வெளிச்சிக்கல்களை நோக்கி படம் நகரும்போது காட்சிகள் உயிர்கொள்கின்றன.

குறிப்பாக ஒரு பெண்ணுக்கான ‘பொருளாதாரா விடுதலை’யின் தேவையை உரைத்துக்கொண்டேயிருக்கும் படம் ஓரிடத்தில் சாலையோர பெண்மணியின் குரலின் வழியே அதன் அழுத்தத்தை கூட்டுவது ‘நச்’ ரகம். செல்வராகவனுடனான ஐஸ்வர்யா ராஜேஷின் அந்த மொத்த உரையாடலை கவிதைகளாக்கி ரசிக்க வைத்திருப்பது எழுத்தாளர் மனுஷ்யபுத்திரன், சங்கர் தாஸ், நெல்சன் தீலிப்குமாரின் வசன மேஜிக். ‘எல்லா விதிக்கும் ஒரு விதி விலக்கு இருக்கு’, ‘நீ சொன்ன வார்த்தையோட அந்த நிமிஷம் கடந்து போகாத படி உறைய வைச்சிருக்கேன்’, ‘நான் இந்த போன கட்பண்ணிட்டா அடுத்து பேசுறவன் குரல் வழியாகவே உன்ன தடவி பார்ப்பான்’ போன்ற வசனங்கள் கவனம் பெறுகின்றன.

அழுவது, எழுவது, பிரச்சினையை எதிர்கொள்ள போராடுவது, தனியொரு பெண்ணாக குடும்ப பொருளாதார நெருக்கடியை சமாளிப்பது என ஐஸ்வர்யா ராஜேஷை மறக்கடித்து ‘ஃபர்ஹானா’ மட்டுமே திரையை ஆக்கிரமித்திருப்பதால் கதையுடன் எளிதில் ஒன்ற முடிகிறது. தொப்பியும், தாடியுமாக அதிகம் பேசாமல் மௌனத்தாலேயே உணர்வைக்கடத்தும் புரிதல் கொண்ட கணவராக ‘ஜித்தன்’ ரமேஷ் நடிப்பில் அத்தனை யதார்த்தம். ‘சர்ப்ரைஸ்’ கொடுக்கும் செல்வராகவன் தன் குரல் வழியே ஆதிக்கம் செலுத்துவதுடன், அந்த கதாபாத்திரத்திற்கு கச்சிதமாக பொருந்திப்போவது பலம். அனுமோல், ஐஸ்வர்யா தத்தா உள்ளிட்டோர் தேவையான நடிப்பை வெளிப்படுத்த தவறவில்லை.

லாஜிக் மீறல்களும் முரண்பாடான கதாபாத்திரங்களும்தான் படத்தின் ஆகப்பெரிய பிரச்சினை. தன் மனைவியை வேலைக்கு அனுப்பும் அளவிற்கான புரிதல் கொண்ட ஜித்தன் ரமேஷ் கதாபாத்திரம் மனைவியை வீட்டு லேண்ட்லைன் போனை தொட அனுமதிக்காமலிருப்பதும், ஐந்துவேளை தொழுகையுடன் தஹஜ்ஜத் தொழும் அளவிற்கான இறைபக்தி கொண்ட ஃபர்ஹானா கதாபாத்திரம் பணத்திற்காக தேர்ந்தெடுக்கும் தொழிலும், அந்த தொழிலில் ஆபத்துகளை அறிந்தும் அதில் தொடர்வதும் முரண். ஸ்மார்ட்போன் யுகத்திலும் ஃபர்ஹானா மொபைல் பயன்படுத்தாமல் இருப்பது குறித்து புரியவில்லை. பள்ளியில் கூட முஸ்லீம் குழந்தை ஹிஜாப் அணிந்திருப்பது, உருது பாதி தமிழ் பாதி என கலந்து பேசும் ‘அரிய’ இஸ்லாமியர் வீடு, இஸ்லாமியர் என்றாலே அவர் தலையில் நிச்சயம் தொப்பியும் ஜிப்பாவும் அணிருந்திப்பார்கள் போன்ற யதார்த்ததுக்கு மிகையான ‘ஸ்டீரியோடைப்’ காட்சிகள் 2023-லும் தொடர்வது நெருடல்.

முந்தைய தலைமுறைக்கும் தற்போதைய தலைமுறைக்குமான வித்தியாசத்தை ஐஸ்வர்யா ராஜேஷின் அப்பா மற்றும் கணவர் மூலம் காட்சிப்படுத்தியிருந்ததும், தன் மனைவி மீது பழி வந்தபின்பும் அதனை குர்ஆன், ஹதீஸின் வழியே எதிர்கொள்ளும் கணவர் கதாபாத்திரமும் பாராட்டுக்குரியது. சர்ச்சையான கொலைக்குப் பின்பும் கால் சென்டர் மீண்டும் இயங்குவதும், ஜித்தன் ரமேஷ் குடும்ப பொருளாதார சூழலை எதிர்கொள்ள எந்த நடவடிக்கைகளையும் மேற்கொள்ளாததும், செல்வராகவன் கதாபாத்திரத்தின் பின்னணியில் தெளிவின்மை, தனியாளாக அவர் எப்படி எல்லாவற்றையும் கண்டறிகிறார் உள்ளிட்ட லாஜிக் சிக்கல்களும் இல்லாமலில்லை. தவிர, ஒரு கட்டத்தில் படம் அடுத்தடுத்து நகராமல் ஒரே இடத்தில் சுற்றிக்கொண்டிருப்பது அயற்சி.

ஜஸ்டின் பிரபாகரன் பின்னணி இசை, காட்சிகளுக்குத் தேவையான பங்களிப்பில் கச்சிதம் சேர்க்கிறது. நெருக்கடியான வீடுகள், குறுகலான சந்து, பெரிய பள்ளிவாசல் என திருவல்லிக்கேணியை குறுக்கு வெட்டுத்தோற்றத்துடன் கோகுல் பினோயின் கேமரா பதிவு செய்திருக்கும் விதம் ஈர்ப்பு. லீனியரான கதை தான் என்றாலும் தனது கட்ஸ் மூலம் காட்சிகளை நேர்த்தியாக்கியிருக்கிறார் சாபு ஜோசஃப். எல்லாவற்றிற்கும் மேலாக இஸ்லாமிய குடும்ப பின்னணியிலிருந்து இந்த கதையை அணுகியிருப்பதற்கான தேவையையும், அதற்குரிய நியாயத்தையும் படத்தின் காட்சிகளோ, திரைக்கதையோ சேர்க்காமலிருக்கும் சூழலில் ‘ஃபர்ஹானா’வாக இந்தப்படம் உருவானது ஏன் என்ற கேள்வி இறுதி வரை தொக்கி நிற்கிறது.

Farhana Review: பரபர திரைக்கதை, க்ரைம் த்ரில்லராக மிரட்டல்; ஆனால் படத்திலிருக்கும் பிரச்னைகள் என்ன?

சர்ப்ரைஸ் பேக்கேஜாக செல்வராகவன். பாதி படம் வரைக்குமே அவரின் முகம் காட்டப்படவில்லை என்றாலும் அவரின் குரலே தேவையானதைச் செய்துவிடுகிறது. குறிப்பாக, அவரின் குட்டு உடைந்தபின், வெளிப்படும் அந்தக் குரல் பயமுறுத்தவே செய்கிறது.

ஒரு குடும்பத்திலிருந்து முதன்முதலாக வேலைக்குச் செல்லும் ஒரு குடும்பப் பெண், ஆபத்தானதொரு பிரச்னையில் மாட்டிக்கொண்டால் என்னவாகும் என்பதே `ஃபர்ஹானா' (Farhana).

இஸ்லாமியக் குடும்பத்தைச் சேர்ந்த ஐஸ்வர்யா ராஜேஷ் (ஃபர்ஹானா), அப்பா, கணவர் மற்றும் சொந்தங்களுடன் வாழ்ந்து வருகிறார். ஒரு கட்டத்தில் குடும்பச் சூழ்நிலை காரணமாக அவர் வேலைக்குச் செல்ல நேரிடுகிறது. பெண்கள் என்றாலே வீட்டு வேலையையும் குடும்பத்துக்குத் தேவையான பணிவிடைகளையும் செய்தாலே போதும் என்ற பிற்போக்கு எண்ணம் கொண்ட அப்பாவையும் மீறி கால் சென்டர் வேலைக்குச் செல்கிறார். வேலை நன்றாகச் சென்றாலும் அதிக ஊக்கத்தொகை கிடைக்கும் மற்றொரு டிபார்ட்மென்ட்டின் பணி ஐஸ்வர்யா ராஜேஷின் ஆசையைத் தூண்டுகிறது. பணத்தேவை இருப்பதால் அந்த டிபார்ட்மென்ட்டுக்கு மாற்றலாகிப் போகிறார். ஆனால், அங்கிருக்கும் பணி அவர் நினைத்ததைவிடவே விபரீதமாக இருக்கிறது. வேறு வழியின்றி அங்கேயே பணியைத் தொடர்பவர், சமய சந்தர்ப்பத்தாலும், நிறுவன விதிமுறைகளை மீறிச் செயல்படுவதாலும் பெரியதொரு ஆபத்தில் மாட்டிக்கொள்கிறார். அதிலிருந்து அவர் எப்படி மீண்டார் என்பதே கதை.

ஃபர்ஹானாவாக ஐஸ்வர்யா ராஜேஷ். வேலைக்குச் சென்று சுயமாக முன்னேற வேண்டும் என்ற விருப்பம், அன்றாட பணிக்குச் செல்லும் பெண்களை வீட்டின் ஜன்னல் வழியே பார்த்து வெளிப்படுத்தும் ஏக்கம், அதிர்ந்து பேசாத குணம் எனச் சிறப்பானதொரு நடிப்பை வழங்கியிருக்கிறார். பிற்பாதியில் வெளிப்படும் குற்றவுணர்வு, கணவருடனான தயக்கம், புதிய நட்பு தரும் உற்சாகம் என வேறொரு பரிமாணத்தையும் யதார்த்தமாகக் கண் முன் நிறுத்துகிறார். கணவராக வரும் ஜித்தன் ரமேஷுக்கு வசனங்கள் குறைவுதான் என்றாலும், தன் கதாபாத்திரத்தின் தன்மை உணர்ந்து நடித்திருக்கிறார். சிக்கலான பிரச்னைகள் தலைதூக்கும்போது கூட இவர் வெளிப்படுத்தும் அமைதி, நம் பரிதாபத்தைச் சம்பாதித்துவிடுகிறது.

சர்ப்ரைஸ் பேக்கேஜாக செல்வராகவன். பாதி படம் வரைக்குமே அவரின் முகம் காட்டப்படவில்லை என்றாலும் அவரின் குரலே தேவையானதைச் செய்துவிடுகிறது. குறிப்பாக, அவரின் குட்டு உடைந்தபின், வெளிப்படும் அந்தக் குரல் பயமுறுத்தவே செய்கிறது. 'ஃபர்-ஹா-னா' என்று அவர் உச்சரிக்கும்போதே ஒருவித கிலி உணர்வு நமக்குமே எட்டிப் பார்க்கிறது.

பழைமைவாதம் நிரம்பிய மனிதராக, ஐஸ்வர்யா ராஜேஷின் அப்பாவாக கிட்டி என்கிற கிருஷ்ணமூர்த்தி. கோபத்தில் வெடித்துச் சிதறும்போது தன் அனுபவத்தைச் சிறப்பாகப் பறைசாற்றுகிறார். கால்சென்டர் ஊழியர்களாக, நண்பர்களாக வரும் ஐஸ்வர்யா தத்தா, அனுமோள், சக்தி ஆகியோர் தங்களுக்குக் கொடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ள பணியைச் சரியாகச் செய்திருக்கின்றனர்.

ஒரு க்ரைம் த்ரில்லர் படத்துக்கு ஏற்ற இருக்கை நுனி திரைக்கதையை அமைத்து முடிந்தளவு பரபரப்புடன் படத்தை நகர்த்தியிருக்கிறார் இயக்குநர் நெல்சன் வெங்கடேசன். குறிப்பாக அந்த மெட்ரோ ரயில் நிலையத்தில் வரும் இடைவேளை காட்சி, அதன் எடிட்டிங், ஒளிப்பதிவு, பின்னணி இசை என அனைத்துமே கவனிக்க வைக்கின்றன. முதல் பாதியின் தொடக்கத்தில் மிஸ்ஸான த்ரில் மோடை, இரண்டாம் பாதியில் முதலிலிருந்தே சேர்த்து கடைசி ஒரு மணி நேரம் அந்த எனர்ஜி குறையாதவாறு பார்த்துக் கொள்கிறார். அந்த வகையில் திரைக்கதை அமைத்த நெல்சன் வெங்கடேசன், சங்கர் தாஸ், ரஞ்சித் ரவீந்திரன் கூட்டணிக்குப் பாராட்டுகள். மனுஷ்யபுத்திரன், நெல்சன் வெங்கடேசன் கூட்டணியின் வசனங்கள் கவித்துவமும் அழுத்தமும் இணைந்து மனதை ஈர்க்கின்றன.

கோகுல் பினாயின் ஒளிப்பதிவு, ஐஸ்ஹவுஸின் குறுகலான சந்துகள், நெருக்கமான வீடுகள் போன்றவற்றைச் சிரத்தையுடன் காட்சிப்படுத்தியிருக்கிறது. மெட்ரோ ரயில் காட்சிகள், அதிலும் குறிப்பாக டிராக் மாறும் காட்சிகள், அண்டர்கிரவுண்ட் ரயில் காட்சிகள் ஆகியவைப் படமாக்கப்பட்ட விதமும், அதைக் கதை சொல்லும் யுக்தியாகத் தேவையான இடங்களில் பயன்படுத்திய விதமும் சிறப்பு. சாபு ஜோசப்பின் படத்தொகுப்பு த்ரில் காட்சிகளுக்குக் கூடுதல் பலம் சேர்த்திருக்கிறது. முக்கியமாகப் படம் முழுவதுக்கும் உயிர் கொடுப்பது ஜஸ்டின் பிரபாகரனின் இசைதான். பாடல்கள் ஈர்க்கவில்லை என்றாலும் த்ரில்லர் காட்சிகளுக்கு உயிரூட்டி இருக்கிறது.

இந்தக் கதையில் இஸ்லாமியக் குடும்பமாகக் காட்டப்படுவதற்கான அவசியம் பெரிதாக இல்லாவிட்டாலும் இஸ்லாமிய மக்களின் வாழ்க்கையை முடிந்தவரை எதார்த்தமாகக் காட்சிப்படுத்தியிருக்கிறார் இயக்குநர். முதன்முறையாக ஒரு பெண் வேலைக்குச் செல்கிறாள், அவள் ஒரு குற்றப் பின்னணியில் சிக்கிக் கொள்கிறாள், அவளுக்கும் அவள் குடும்பத்துக்கும் ஆபத்து என்பது போன்ற காட்சிகள் மறைமுகமாக அந்தப் பெண் பொருளாதார ரீதியாகச் சுதந்திரம் அடைவதற்கு எதிரான கருத்தியலாகவே பார்க்கப்படும் ஆபத்தும் உண்டு.

அதே சமயம், பிரச்னைகளைக் கண்டு முடங்கிவிடாமல் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட பெண்ணே துணிச்சலுடன் எதிர்கொள்வதும் புரிதலுடன் கணவன் துணை நிற்பதும் பாராட்டத்தக்கவை. பிரச்னையிலிருந்து மீண்டபின் மீண்டும் ஃபர்ஹானா இயல்பாக வேலைக்குச் செல்லும் காட்சி வரவேற்கத்தக்கது. கிருஷ்ணமூர்த்திக்கும் பக்கத்துக் பழக்கடை அம்மாவுக்குமான அந்த உரையாடல் வலிந்து திணிக்கப்பட்ட ஒன்றாகவே தெரிந்தாலும், அதில் சொல்லப்பட்ட கருத்து பாராட்டுக்குரியது.

மொத்தத்தில், ஒரு க்ரைம் த்ரில்லராக திருப்தியளிக்கும் படைப்பாகவே வந்திருக்கும் `ஃபர்ஹானா'வில் இருக்கும் சில அரசியல் சிக்கல்களைக் களைந்திருந்தால் இன்னும் சிறப்பானதொரு படைப்பாக மாறியிருக்கும்.

Farhana Movie Review: A Technically Sound Thriller Powered By Nuanced Writing

We all come across several strangers every day. While a few remain just random faces, some become a part of our life. But does every individual mean well? And if you trust the wrong person, are you the one to be blamed, especially if you are a woman; a working woman? 

A woman's fight doesn't end when she procures a job by overcoming patriarchal beliefs; it is only the tip of the iceberg. The real deal is how she manages to continue working. One wrong move, and bam — her life might take a reverse gear. Nelson Venkatesan ’s  Farhana  focuses on this battle of a woman with her inner self, family and society.

Farhana’s ( Aishwarya Rajesh ) father Ajeez Bhai (Kittu) and husband Karim (Jithan Ramesh) run a small footwear store together. When their business takes a hit, Farhana, a mother of three who was confined to household chores until then, decides to take up a job at a call centre. But her father, conditioned by patriarchal thoughts, does not understand why a woman should go to work. He sarcastically says, “When a man can’t earn, even his wife and children won’t pay heed to him. Since the business is dry, ellarukum rekkai mulaichu pochu (everyone got their own wings).”

But yes, when Farhana goes to her new job at the call centre, rekkai mulaichiruchu (she does get wings). And the film’s visuals portray the emotions beautifully; we get glimpses of Farhana swirling her dupatta around before wearing it as a hijab. And every time she does it, you can see how much that freedom means to her, that  dupatta  signifying her wings to fly. 

While she pays her children’s fees and manages the expenses, one of her kids gets hospitalised and Farhana shifts to a different department for better incentives. However, it is too late when she learns that it is a sex chat call centre. She is shocked and decides to shift back to her old department until she receives a call from a musician named Dhayalan. Unlike others, Dhayalan strikes up a friendly conversation. The call soon becomes a window of liberation for both, as they exchange thoughts and memories that they have not been able to share with anyone else. Credits to the dialogue, even though Dhayalan’s face is not revealed and the visuals are restricted to just the call centre, the sequences are poetic and rarely get boring. But what if Dhayalan is not benign as his voice? With a bang-on intermission, the film, breezy and poetic until then, takes a thrilling turn as Farhana finds herself caught in a mess.  

Be it an old man who harbours patriarchal ideas or people who work in a sex chat center, it is easy to pass a judgemental opinion. Nelson, however, refrains from doing so. The film deftly mirrors the different people as they are, which is the biggest strength of  Farhana . That said, in an otherwise organic plot, some of Farhana’s and Dhayalan’s decisions stick out like a sore thumb, especially during the climax. 

Four out of five recent films by Aishwarya Rajesh are women-centric. She has been wonderful as the daughter who takes revenge in  Driver Jamuna  or the woman who fights a patriarchal household in  The Great Indian Kitchen 's   Tamil remake .  But  Farhana  is arguably the best among the lot. Backed by nuanced writing, Aishwarya lives as Farhana. Be it the newfound joy in going to work or the suppressed fears and remorse she feels later on in the film, Aishwarya lets her eyes do all the talking. And since the film relies heavily on Aishwarya’s expressions to instill tension, her performance helps the film to a great extent. Apart from her, Gokul Benoy’s cinematography and Justin Prabhakaran’s music complement the tense mood of the film. From the gloomy underground passages of the metro train to the ticking moments of a credit card being swiped, the camera focuses on external objects to induce the fear of a ticking clock, which keeps us at the edge of our seats.

For a thriller, the film   is beautiful in the least expected ways and the   magic lies in the minute details it subtly focuses on. Watch out for the sequence where a fruit seller makes Ajeez Bhai realise why women should go to work. Similarly, in one scene, Farhana rushes back to her home, and out of nervousness, she forgets her  parda . Her husband questions her for forgetting it, but also instinctively closes the screen of her father’s room, to shield her from his potential anger if he finds out the same. Karim, as a progressive husband, is the solution to all her problems. Maybe all we need is a supportive family who trusts us no matter what. 

Nelson and his co-writers Sankar Dass and Renjith Ravindran have crafted each character with great detail. It is impressive that most of them are not mere tools to drive the narrative forward. For instance, Sakthi Raj who plays as a quality-checking employee in Farhana’s office, has a crush on her. Often, he is the funny sidekick who sprinkles humour. But even he goes out of his way to ensure her safety and happiness, even if it means his job is at risk. From Sakthi to a random old woman who lets Farhana rest on her lap as the latter cries her heart out in a crowded metro, the film portrays several kind-hearted people in  Farhana’s  world, representing strangers who change our life for the better.

‘Farhana’ movie review: Aishwarya Rajesh pillars this intriguing drama on empowerment and freedom of choice

Despite an extremely simple story, the treatment and performances from its cherry-picked cast make ‘farhana’ deserve a place on a higher pedestal.

After one of Farhana ’s several nail-biting stretches, an emotionally tired Farhana (Aishwarya Rajesh), travelling back home in a metro, falls on the lap of a random old woman and begins to weep. Another stranger, a woman, noticing this and the attention it garners across the compartment, moves a little towards Farhana, covering her from the unsolicited eyeballs. At a time when lovers of cinema are taking to social media to celebrate men characters written by women — which we truly can’t get enough of — it’s nice to notice a male filmmaker add such nifty and endearing sequences we rarely see in women-fronted films. Director Nelson Venkatesan, who did the same with his debut film Oru Naal Koothu , after a brilliant sophomore in the form of SJ Suryah’s Monster , is back on his tried-and-tested grounds to give us Farhana , a fascinating drama that touches upon several topics.

In Farhana , Nelson narrates the story of a Muslim woman from a conservative family who “allow” her to work because of their dire financial situation. When she learns of a different team within the call centre she works at that provides better incentives, she signs up for it only to realise that it’s a value-added service that’s used by sex-starved men hoping to satiate their cravings by talking to women. Initially appalled by the idea, Farhana comes to terms with it thanks to the positive impact her salary has on her family and finding a friend in a caller with whom she develops a strong bond. Like a bird out of her cage, Farhana flies high only to later realise that not all branches she rests on are trees that provide solace and that some could be vicious traps. There’s more to it than meets the eye and when Farhana bypasses her company protocols and tries to meet the stranger on the call, hell breaks loose.

Macroscopically, Farhana is an extremely simple and straightforward story. But it’s the treatment and performances from its cherry-picked cast that make the film deserve a place on a higher pedestal. Akin to the lines from AC/DC’s ‘Back In Black’ track that the film starts with, Farhana is about the titular character taking control of her life and rising up to the occasion. The poetic choices and returning to similar scenarios that have a different result without spoon-feeding the parallels are Farhana’s biggest strengths. There are the obvious cues like the scene where Farhana longingly looks at working women carrying large handbags that she eventually gets for herself. And then, there are the not-so-obvious ones like not having a phone for herself or not being allowed to pick up the landline calls at her house only for her to buy one thanks to a job that involves phone calls. The film is a repository of such expositions that never feels excessive. My favourite must be a shot of Farhana, hurrying to meet someone, looking at a clock with a tube of Moov ointment next to it.

The poetic touches hit a crescendo when Farhana virtually acquaints Dhayalan (Selvaraghavan) and their conversation, though quite indulgent after a while, makes a case for the need for a soul that’s just there for us, to listen to our blabbers and share our secrets and vulnerabilities with. These sequences, despite being a tad excessive, aid in transitioning the drama into a thriller that it ends up becoming towards the end. What doesn’t work in favour of the film is the simple storyline stretched to the length of a film and this is more visible after the introduction of Dhayalan. But Farhana makes up for it with how well it stays true to the world it creates. Despite showcasing the struggles of a woman from an orthodox family, the film intentionally never questions the religious aspects that turn into expectations women are still forced to live up to. In fact, Farhana , despite her situation, upholds the tenets of Islam. Over the course of the film, we see her adhering to the pillars of her faith such as Shahada (profession of faith), Salah (prayer), Zakat (almsgiving) and Sawm (fasting during the holy month of Ramadan). Farhana wears her identity on her sleeve like the purdah she tucks herself into.

Farhana’s biggest pillar is Aishwarya who, as Farhana, in one of her best roles in recent times, shows her resilience in her actions rather than words. Jithan Ramesh as Karim, a progressive and caring husband with his own set of insecurities, is a pleasant surprise while Kitty, as Farhana’s father Ajeez Bhai, scores as the patriarchal patriarch of the family; after Bombay , the veteran once again hits it out of the park as a Muslim man who values his faith as much as his family. Selva amazes us by being an extension of the characters from the films he directed in his earlier days. Behind the camera, it’s Justin Prabhakaran’s background score and dialogues by Nelson, Shankar Dass and Manushyaputhiran that add flavour to the film. The film is laced with interesting lines, like the one Nithya (Anumol) says that’s on the lines of how an average Indian man’s sex life is mostly inside his head, or the one where Karim, who runs a footwear store, explains the difference between falling and touching someone’s legs inside and outside the shop.

Farhana might not be a perfect film but its heart is in the right place. Like the meaning behind the name, Farhana is a joyous ride that skips the preachy and loud path towards sharing its message and prefers to say it as a breezy whisper.

Farhana Movie Review: A conversation, confinement, and solace stir this engaging drama

At one point in  Farhana , Selvaraghavan's Dhayalan says that a face is a blanket of oneself that an individual does not wish to see. This statement plays on an undercurrent tone, as well, when  Farhana  cleverly chooses to play with Dhayalan's physical identity and use it as equipment of sorts to bring the film's necessary diabolical shift. A strange psyche is also in place, and Selvaraghavan's presence, too stirs the conflict that  Farhana  poignantly rests upon. 

Farhana's (Aishwarya Rajesh) hijab never leaves her ears, but the fierceness of tucking in reduces gently. Over time, we realise how Farhana's relationship with her hijab stands as a metaphor for her metamorphic growth. It is a relief to see that Farhana's religious identity is never sacrificed, compromised, or criticised, thus correcting recent films that take the onus of talking about issues for women, with maybe not-so-noble intentions.

Farhana comes from a staunch, lower-middle-class Indian Muslim family. She is seen wearing a  Metti  (toe ring), prays five times a day irrespective of the place and situation, and shoulders household responsibilities. The initial 30-odd minutes rivetingly reflect the confinement that Farhana goes through while living with her husband Karim (Jithan Ramesh). Even as he, who runs a footwear store, expresses a subtle support for Farhana by getting a new pair of work footwear, there seems a confinement that she is looped into. 

She is someone, who is restrained from dancing at her friend's wedding and having a cell phone, considered more impious by her father Ajeez Bhai (Kittu). Nelson Venkatesan delectably sets up the world of  Farhana  so much that you heave a sigh of relief along with her when she steps into her office for the first day of work with her newly bought favourite handbag. And she says it is "jolly" even when the smallest weight is put down. 

Her job at the call centre does not come with her pursual of passion, but rather proceedings of poverty that drives Farhana's decision. And just like any other middle-class thought process, Farhana wishes for more, which puts her in a situation that also comes with vexatious results. 

One of the most heart-warming themes of  Farhana  that propel the central conflict is solace. Nelson makes a compelling argument for how it becomes child's play to open up to someone whose identity is not involved. Farhana also encounters a situation where she is expected to talk to lonely, pervert men for as long as possible. It is also left to interpretation if the callers are only men and if only women are on the other side. Perhaps, a commentary on how sexually liberating talks are yet to be made by women or that men are yet to hear what women got to say. But that's a discussion for another day. Let's come back to Farhana. 

Amidst those wanting to know her body type, comes a voice who wants a conversation of silence, in-between the sounds of water, wind chimes and guitar strings. The conversation-driven stretch makes up for the heart of the film, humbly dismissing how the number of people around you does not matter in front of the number of ears that will pay heed to your silences. There is indeed a poetic stretch of understanding between strangers until  Farhana  decides to make a tonal shift in its genre. 

There is a religious touch to this, and strangely, a Hindu reference to  Lakshman Rekha  is drawn to bring out an emphasising effort of Farhana moving out into the danger zone, or can we say a battleground where she is the warrior and saviour of herself?

Farhana  is effectively anchored by its cast, primarily led by Aishwarya Rajesh. Her portrayal of a Muslim does not only come up with the actor's smart performance but also with in-depth writing. There is no alienation of sorts, and it is wise that Farhana's Islamic identity is never an example of tokenism to show women from a minority community or for milking the religion for its gender-bias practices. Instead, the film understandably takes you into the world of a subjugated woman just against the backdrop of a Muslim household. But what adds to this is the supporting cast that brilliantly sums up the world of the film. Kittu as the staunch elderly patriarch, who is taken aback that Farhana bought a new phone for herself, free-wheeling Sophie (Aishwarya Dutta), and an accepting colleague Nithya (Anumol), to name a few. While Jithan Ramesh carries the role with ease as a husband who goes to all lengths to be progressive within the frameworks of a typical Indian patriarchal house, Selvaraghavan adds a touch of psyche exampling.

At times,  Farhana  lacks due to tepid stretches, especially in the latter half. But for the storytelling shift that it takes, the film fairly understands itself and gets past it with noble intentions and promises. Farhana is a film that effectively brings the themes of solace, independence, and most importantly, the message that worldly notions need not leave one bereft of their fundamental rights.

Farhana review: A daring film starring a superb Aishwarya Rajesh

Farhana, a young married Muslim woman, defies a conservative father to start work at a call centre. Her father and husband make little money from the tiny shoe shop they own in the busy bylanes of Triplicane in Chennai. Farhana’s job will make life easier, but her father doesn’t believe in women working outside the home. Her husband Karim, on the other hand, is a soft-spoken, supportive presence, as Farhana steps into a corporate world dazzlingly new to her. She does well on the job, discovering exhilarating new independence. These are rare portrayals in Kollywood or any other Indian cinema industry—so there is much that director Nelson Venkatesan gets right in Farhana , starring Aishwarya Rajesh as the titular character.

A mainstream movie with an empowered Muslim woman character in times of virulent Hindutva politics is quite rare. Even rarer is a film that neither patronises its Muslim woman characters nor bases them on Islamophobic rhetoric like The Kerala Story does, for example. Yet, Farhana has been caught up in controversy, perhaps because of a very particular plot point.

When Farhana asks to be moved to a new department at her office that offers better incentives, she doesn’t realise until it’s too late that the job is in the phone sex chat industry. The film doesn’t attempt to pass judgement on people who use these facilities, nor does it vilify those who work in such companies. But it does give Farhana the space to express her shock, discomfort, and ultimately her own reasons for staying on the job.

She strikes up an unlikely friendship with one of her callers–a man whose identity and the actor playing him, the film takes great pains not to reveal for most of the run time. I’ll refer to him as The Caller so as to not spoil the big reveal.

Farhana finds herself comfortable speaking her mind to The Caller who seems interested in talking about anything but sex. She feels heard and seen in ways she does not around her own family, but of course, rather predictably, The Caller turns out to be an obsessive, predatory man.

How Farhana deals with the sudden, sickening turn of events with The Caller keeps you thoroughly engaged. While there are moments wherein the film verges onto unnecessary dramatics, such sequences are only a handful.

This is Farhana’s story—a daring, vulnerable, movingly realistic young Muslim woman who ultimately, albeit with a little help, saves herself. There are no larger-than-life male heroes to swoop in at the last moment to rescue the woman in distress. No man here is mouthing punch dialogues to resounding cheers from fans. Instead, when Farhana speaks her last words to The Caller after saving herself, she radiates a quiet power and dignity impossible to forget.

Such representation is quite precious both for itself and for its rarity in cinema. Even rarer is an actor who pulls it off with such conviction, you see the character leap to life in front of your eyes, even though she wears the face of someone as recognisable as Aishwarya Rajesh. The actor has repeatedly proven from as long ago as Vetrimaaran’s Vada Chennai that given a well-written female character (another rarity), she can outshine everyone else in the scene with her.

From her first longing gaze at a working woman’s handbag to the delight in her everyday defiances, her exchanges with other female colleagues to the warm glow of her initial friendship with The Caller, Aishwarya lets you keenly experience each moment alongside Farhana. The actor has you wishing deeply for more such portrayals of women, particularly from marginalised communities.

The rarity of a Farhana in cinema is also perhaps why there is so much scrutiny of this film. Some of the pushback to the film is clearly misguided, claiming that the film shows a Muslim woman doing sex work. The story of Farhana is more complex than that.

It also asks how we view the practice of sex chat facilities. Is it possible to have a liberated view of sex and simultaneously point out how such facilities can be used to cause harm? Contrarily, is it also possible to consider the benefits of sex chat facilities without moralising the theme?

The film makes an attempt to urge viewers to ask these questions of themselves, though it does water down its own stance a little bit. Besides such films being rare in Indian cinema, the film is ultimately made by an outsider to the community it turns its gaze on. This aspect of the film leaves me with one last question:

When will more individuals from minority and marginalised groups be able to tell their own stories, and how would a Muslim woman director have chosen to tell us a story like Farhana ?

Nelson Venkatesan's 'Farhana' gives Aishwarya Rajesh a fine chance to shine in the midst of a middling thriller

With Oru Naal Koothu , Nelson Venkatesan showed us he could do drama. The film was a sobering look at modern-day marriage. His next film, the very entertaining Monster , was a total U-turn: it was a live-action cartoon about a man who battles a rat. With Farhana , the director proves that he really does not want to be slotted in any genre-box: broadly speaking, this is a thriller. But after a clumsily staged opening stretch (which exaggerates a certain kind of "danger" that awaits free-spirited women), we land in a drama very much like Satyajit Ray's Mahanagar . A middle-class woman (Farhana, played by Aishwarya Rajesh) takes up a job to ease the financial pressure on her family. In both films, the father-in-law disapproves, and in both films, the job is rather unconventional. In the 1960s, when women were meant to be homemakers, Ray's heroine stepped out and became a door-to-door saleswoman. In Farhana's case, the job is at a call centre, where she sex-chats with men. The hitch is that she is a devout Muslim.

The film does a fine job of bringing to life a patriarchal family that talks in a Hindi-Tamil mix, where Farhana is not allowed to have a phone and has to use a landline with the constant reminder that everyone around can hear her words. Nelson focuses on his heroine's face, her expressive eyes – and Aishwarya gives us everything from timidity to disgust to fear to controlled rage. Even when she's caught in  a stretch that makes her seem like a detective in an action movie, we never lose sight of the conservative Farhana she was and will always be. Jithan Ramesh plays her understanding husband with a lot of goodness and grace. He may not be very happy that his wife has to support the family, but he doesn't feel emasculated either. Once the decision has been made, he supports her fully. He works in the failing family footwear store, and on Farhana's first day of work, he gets her new pair of footwear. He attended the job interview with her, and saw the fancy footwear everyone else was wearing. He does not want his wife to be found lacking in at least that department, the department that is his specialty.

The plotting is very convenient – from the way Farhana gets a contact who gets her a job, and how she impresses her boss on her very first day at work. The way Farhana "unknowingly" finds herself in the sex-chat centre is unconvincing (wouldn't someone tell her what the job is?), as are scenes like the one where the cops land up at her home and shame her in front of everyone. To make things palatable for audiences, a coworker (very nicely played by Anumol) is used to keep underlining the fact that Farhana cannot digest this kind of job. But Nelson is much better at writing characters, and the film really blooms when Farhana begins  talking to a lonely man with the kind of poetic streak you'd find in a Mysskin movie. (You probably know the special guest star who plays this part.) Farhana and her husband talk only about practical things affecting the family, and for the first time, she finds a friend who liberates the trapped soul inside her. She is able to speak out her inner thoughts.

To keep Farhana "pure" in our eyes, we never see (or hear) the other men she talks to – and very refreshingly, these men are not painted as creeps but simply as people with needs they cannot express verbally to others. Around the midway mark, the film turns into a version of Fatal Attraction , with the spurned woman being replaced by a spurned man. Farhana now faces a psycho-stalker, and while Justin Prabhakaran's super-fun techno score keeps amping up the scenes, the plot itself takes too long to move. It inches ahead, and except for a tense pre-interval stretch, we never get to that nail-biting zone that we expect from a thriller. There's too much talk, and the psycho-stalker does not come across as a menacing figure at all. But again, the bits of character writing are good, like the scene in the metro where Farhana is comforted by other women – we sense a sisterhood. And Aishwarya Rajesh keeps makes us invest fully in her character, a woman who is almost "punished" for doing something against her religion. Flaws and all, I look forward to the genre Nelson Venkatesan takes up next.

'Farhana' movie review: Aishwarya Rajesh is the highlight of this intriguing thriller

A purdah-clad Muslim woman who leaves for work after putting her children in her husband's care, is quite the unusual protagonist, as far as Indian movies are concerned.

In that way, 'Farhana' featuring Aishwarya Rajesh as the titular character, is different as it makes an attempt to represent a section of women who are usually relegated to the shadows or misrepresented in Indian cinema. That the film hit theatres exactly a week after the controversial Sudipto Sen directorial 'The Kerala Story' released, is quite interesting.

For unlike 'The Kerala Story', the Muslim community in 'Farhana' are shown as people who are capable of love and care, though some hold views that are quite regressive. Farhana's orthodox father is one such character. He believes women are meant to stay at home and take care of their children and that they need not own a mobile phone or even get a good education.

The 'regressive' tone of the characters ends there. Farhana's husband (Jithan Ramesh), though not worldly, is portrayed as a kindhearted man who is in favour of his wife going to work, despite the odds. Though his not preferring that Farhana attend any phone calls may seem contradictory to his otherwise liberal nature, his character is quite interesting.

Farhana takes up a job at a call centre, which isn't your conventional 'what's wrong with your product?' BPO. Here, the job entails having to engage in simulated sex with customers over the phone. Despite being an educated woman who is clearly uncomfortable with the nature of the job, Farhana's financial constraints leave her with no other option. However, one call she attends while at work changes her life. The intrigue and the treatment of the movie make it an interesting watch.

The movie's trailer had come under criticism for portraying Aishwarya's character as a woman working at a phone sex call centre. Her character being a Muslim did not sit well with the community with some even saying the film was an insult to Muslim women.

However, director Nelson Venkatesan has made an attempt to ensure that the character does not seem controversial. More than being a Muslim woman, Farhana has her own identity. Like any other woman who steps out into the world, she too has to face some challenges to move up in life.

Nelson has done a good job of keeping the intrigue flowing, though the film suffers from moments of lull, too. The mysterious man behind the voice, who falls in love with Farhana, is the highlight of the movie, which turns dark in the second half.

The performances by all the actors, including Selvaraghavan, Kitty, Anumol and Aishwarya Dutta, were commendable, though Aishwarya Rajesh is the highlight of the film. Her facial expressions, her composure and the way she carried herself, prove that she is someone who can carry an entire film on her shoulders.

இஸ்லாமியர்களை தீவிரவாதிகளாகவும் வேற்றுகிரக வாசிகள் போலவும் சித்தரித்து வரும் சினிமாக்களுக்கு மத்தியில் இஸ்லாமிய குடும்பப்  பின்னணியைக் கொண்ட நாயகியை மையப்படுத்தி, ஐஸ்வர்யா ராஜேஷ் நடிப்பில் ஹீரோயின் சென்ரிக் படமான ஃபர்ஹானா திரைப்படம் இன்று திரையரங்குகளில் வெளியாகியுள்ளது.

ஒரு நாள் கூத்து, மான்ஸ்டர் படங்களின் வரிசையில் இந்தப் படத்தை இயக்குநர் நெல்சன் வெங்கடேசன் இயக்கியுள்ளார். இஸ்லாமிய அமைப்புகள் படத்துக்கு தடை கோரி குரல்கள் எழுப்பிய நிலையில் இப்படம் எப்படி இருக்கிறது? இஸ்லாமியர்களை சரியாக திரையில் சித்தரித்துள்ளதா? 

ஃபர்ஹானா திரைப்பட விமர்சனம்

கட்டுக்கோப்பான இஸ்லாமிய தந்தை, அன்பான கணவர், மூன்று குழந்தைகளை கொண்டு, ஐந்து வேளை தொழுகை உடன்  கூடுதலாக ஆறாவது வேளை தொழுகை செய்து வாழும் சராசரி இஸ்லாமிய குடும்பப் பெண் 'ஃபர்ஹானா' ஐஸ்வர்யா ராஜேஷ். படித்த பெண்ணான ஃபர்ஹானா, குழந்தைகளுக்கு ஸ்கூல் பீஸ் கட்ட முடியாமல், மருத்துவ செலவை ஏற்க முடியாமல் திணறும் குடும்பத்துக்கு உதவ தன் மன, குடும்ப தடைகளை உடைத்து, வீட்டினரை சம்மதிக்க வைத்து வேலைக்கு செல்கிறார்.

வங்கிக் கடனுக்காக கஸ்டமரிடம் பேசும் கஸ்டமர் கால் சர்வீஸ் வேலையில் சேரும் ஃபர்ஹானா தன் அலுவலகத்தில் மற்றொரு துறையில் அதிக சன்மானம் கிடைப்பதைப் பார்த்து அங்கு மாற்றலாகி செல்லக் கேட்கிறார். அங்கு வற்புறுத்தி மாற்றலாகி அவர் சென்ற பின் தான் தெரிகிறது அது ஃப்ரெண்ட்ஷிப் கால் எனப்படும் நட்புலகம் கால் சேவை.

தனியாக உணர்பவர்கள் முகம் தெரியாத எதிரில் இருப்பவர்களிடம் பெரும்பான்மை உரையாடலில் ஆபாசத்தை அள்ளி வீச, இவர்களுக்கு மத்தியில், கனிவான குரலில் தன் உணர்வறிந்து பேசும் மற்றொரு குரலை ஐஸ்வர்யா ராஜேஷ் சந்திக்கிறார். அந்த நபர் ஃபர்ஹானாவின் ரெகுலர் அழைப்பாக மாற ஒரு கட்டத்தில், அந்நபருடன் தனி பிணைப்பைக் கொள்ளும் ஃபர்ஹானா அந்த நபரை நேரில் சந்திக்க எண்ணி அழைக்கிறார். 

ஐஸ்வர்யா ராஜேஷின் நடிப்பு

ஆனால் தொடர்ந்து நிகழும் ஒரு அசம்பாவித சம்பவத்தால் தன்நிலை உணர்ந்து தன் முடிவை மாற்றிக் கொண்டு தன பணியைத்  தொடர்கிறார். இந்நிலையில் போனில் பேசிய நபரை ஃபர்ஹானா நேரில் சந்தித்தாரா? கணவர், குடும்பம் என பலகட்ட சிக்கல்களை தாண்டி வேலைக்கு வந்த ஃபர்ஹானாவின் நிலை என்ன? என்பதை சுவாரஸ்யம் கூட்டி சன்பென்ஸ் கலந்து கொடுத்திருக்கிறார்கள்.

அன்பான கணவர், ஸ்ட்ரிக்ட்டான இஸ்லாமிய தந்தை ஆகியோருக்கு இடையே ஹேண்ட்பேக் சுமந்து வேலைக்கு செல்லும் பெண்ணைப் பார்த்து ஏங்கும் பக்கத்து வீட்டு இஸ்லாமிய பெண் ஃபர்ஹானாவாக ஐஸ்வர்யா ராஜேஷின் நடிப்பு மிகச்சிறப்பு!

தடைகளை உடைத்து வேலைக்குச் செல்வது, காலருடன் ஏற்பட்ட பிணைப்பை பதின்ம வயது சிறுமியைப் போல் மாறி வெளிப்படுத்துவது, அந்த நபரின் உண்மை நோக்கம் அறிந்து குடும்பத்திடம் பகிர முடியாமல் திணறுவது என ஹை வோல்டேஜ் பர்ஃபாமன்ஸ் கொடுத்து கம் பேக் தந்துள்ளார் ஐஸ்வர்யா ராஜேஷ்.

அவரது கண்களே பாதிக் காட்சிகளில் நடித்து விடுகின்றன. வாரம் ஒரு படத்தில் நடிக்கிறார் எனும் கிண்டல் மீம்களுக்கு தன் நடிப்பால் பதிலடி கொடுத்துள்ள ஐஸ்வர்யா ராஜேஷுக்கு பூச்செண்டுகள்..!

சர்ப்ரைஸ் தந்த செல்வராகவன்:

வேலைக்குச் செல்லும் தன் மனைவிக்கு நல்ல செருப்பு அணிவித்து தயங்கித் தயங்கி அன்பை வெளிப்படுத்தும் இஸ்லாமிய கணவராக ஜித்தன் ரமேஷ். அப்பாவி கணவராக வலம் வந்தாலும், சந்தேகங்கள் தாண்டி மனைவிக்கு பக்கபலமாக நிற்பது என வெகு நாட்களுக்குப் பிறகு கவனம் ஈர்த்து ஸ்கோர் செய்துள்ளார்.

ரசிகர்களுக்கு மிகப்பெரிய சர்ப்ரைஸ் எண்ட்ரியாக செல்வராகவன்! முதல் பாதி முழுக்க குரலாலேயே நடித்து பார்வையாளர்களை காதலில் விழ வைக்கும் செல்வராகவன், இரண்டாம் பாதியில் செய்வது அதகளத்தின் உச்சம்! நடிகராக செல்வா மிரட்டி ஸ்கோர் செய்திருக்கும் முதல் படம், நெட்டிசன்களின் ஆதர்ச மீம் கன்டென்ட் பாத்திரமாக இனி ஒரு ரவுண்டு வருவார். செல்வராகவனின் வசனங்களை இரவல் வாங்கிப் பேசி ஸ்கோர் செய்து, கால் அழைப்பை கண்காணித்து எமோஷனல் ஆகும் இளைஞர் அப்லாஸ் அள்ளுகிறார்.  

கட்டுக்கோப்பான அப்பாவாக  கிட்டு,  ஃப்ரி ஸ்பிரிட் மாடர்ன் பெண்ணாக ஐஸ்வர்யா தத்தா, தோழிக்கு ஆறுதல் கூறும் அனுமோல் என அனைவரும் தங்கள் கதாபாத்திரங்களை சரியாக செய்துள்ளனர்.

நிறை, குறைகள்

லக்ஷ்மி குறும்படத்தை நினைவூட்டி ரசிகர்களை புன்முறுவல் பூக்க வைக்கும் முதல் பாதிக்கு நேர் எதிர் துருவத்தில் சஸ்பென்ஸ் கூட்டி  விறுவிறுப்பாக பயணிக்கிறது  இரண்டாம் பாதி. மனுஷ்யபுத்திரன் - சங்கர் தாஸ் - நெல்சன் கூட்டணியில் வசனங்கள் ஈர்க்கின்றன. குறிப்பாக செல்வராகவன் பிக் அப் லைன்களை அள்ளித் தெளிக்கும் முதல் பத்தி வசனங்கள் பெரும் பலம்.

“வேலைக்கு போற படித்த பெண் கர்வமா இருக்கணும்” என ஜித்தன் ரமேஷ் ஃபர்ஹானாவிடம் சொல்லும் காட்சி, கட்டுக்கோப்பான தந்தை கிட்டுவுக்கு பக்கத்து கடை பெண் அறிவுரை சொல்லும் காட்சிகள் நச் ரகம்!

ஜஸ்டின் பிரபாகரனின் இசை முதல் பாதியில் கவிதையாகவும், இரண்டாம் பாதி சேஸிங் காட்சிகளுக்கு பலம் சேர்த்தும் படத்துக்கு பக்கபலமாக அமைந்துள்ளது. முதல் பாதிக்கு நேர் எதிரே பயணிக்கும் இரண்டாம் பாதி இரு வேறு படங்களை பார்க்கும் உணர்வைத் தந்தாலும் விறுவிறுப்பு குறையாமல் இறுதி வரை பயணிக்கிறது.

நெற்றித்தடம் இருக்கும் 'பாய்', புகை போடும் 'பாய்', செல்ஃபோன் பயன்படுத்தாத இஸ்லாமிய பெண் என சில ஸ்டீரியோடைப் காட்சிகள் இருந்தாலும், தீவிரவாதியாகவோ, வேற்றுகிரக வாசி போலவோ இஸ்லாமியரை சித்தரிக்காமல், அவர்கள் வாழ்வியல் பின்னணியில் வெகு நாட்களுக்குப் பின் ஒரு தமிழ்  கமர்ஷியல் திரைப்படம் வெளியாகியுள்ளது ஆறுதலான விஷயம். 

இஸ்லாமிய பின்னணி என்றாலே சர்சசை எனும் முள் மேல் நடப்பது போன்ற சூழலில்,  வேலைக்குச் செல்லும் இஸ்லாமிய பெண்ணை சுற்றிய கமர்ஷியல் கதையை முதிர்ச்சியாக கையாண்டு, முத்திரை பதித்திருக்கும் இயக்குநர் நெல்சன் வெங்கடேசனுக்கு வாழ்த்துகள்.

தயாரிப்பு - டிரீம் வாரியர் பிக்சர்ஸ் இயக்கம் - நெல்சன் வெங்கடேசன் இசை - ஜஸ்டின் பிரபாகரன் நடிப்பு - ஐஸ்வர்யா ராஜேஷ், ஜித்தன் ரமேஷ், செல்வராகவன் வெளியான தேதி - 12 மே 2023 நேரம் - 2 மணி நேரம் 21 நிமிடம் ரேட்டிங் - 2.75 தமிழ் சினிமாவைப் பொறுத்தவரையில் முஸ்லிம் குடும்பத்து வாழ்க்கையைப் பற்றிய கதையோ, அதைச் சுற்றிய கதைக்களங்களோ அதிகம் வந்ததில்லை. இந்து குடும்பம், கிறிஸ்துவ குடும்பம் பற்றிய கதைகள் தான் அதிகம் வந்துள்ளன. ஆனால், இந்தப் படம் பலருக்கும் அதிகம் தெரிந்திராத ஒரு சராசரி முஸ்லிம் குடும்பத்து வாழ்வியலைப் பதிவு செய்திருக்கிறது. முஸ்லிம் குடும்பத்தைச் சேர்ந்த ஒரு பெண் தனது குழந்தைகளுக்காக அவர்கள் தன்னைப் போல வறுமையில் சிக்கித் தவிக்கக் கூடாது என்பதற்காக வேலைக்குச் செல்கிறார். வேலைக்குச் சென்ற இடத்தில் அவர் சந்திக்கும் சிக்கல்கள், அதை அவர் எதிர் கொள்ளும் விதம், அவரது குடும்பத்தினர் அவரை எதிர்கொள்ளும் விதம், அதிலிருந்து மீண்டாரா இல்லையா என்பதை இயக்குனர் நெல்சன் வெங்கடேசன் இந்தப் படத்தில் கொடுத்திருக்கிறார்.

சென்னை, திருவல்லிக்கேணி பகுதியைச் சேர்ந்த ஏழை முஸ்லிம் குடும்பத்தைச் சேர்ந்தவர் ஐஸ்வர்யா ராஜேஷ். கணவர் ஜித்தன் ரமேஷ், மூன்று குழந்தைகள் என அருகருகே மற்ற உறவினர்களுடன் கூட்டுக் குடும்பமாக இருக்கிறது. தனது குழந்தைகளின் எதிர்காலம் கருதி புதிதாக வேலைக்குச் செல்கிறார். வேலைக்குச் சென்ற இடம் ஒரு கால் சென்டர். கூடுதல் சம்பளம், இன்க்ரிமென்ட் கிடைக்கும் என்பதற்காக 'பிரண்ட் ஷிப் சாட்' என்ற பிரிவுக்குச் செல்கிறார். அங்கு வரும் 'டெலிபோன் கால்'கள் அனைத்துமே ஆபாசமானவைதான். தங்கள் அடையாளத்தைச் சொல்லாமல் பணி செய்பவர்கள் வரும் போன்கால்களில் பேச வேண்டும். இப்படியெல்லாம் கூட 'கால் சென்டர்' இருக்கிறதா ?. ஒரு வாரம் அதில் வேலை பார்க்கலாம், பிடிக்கவில்லை என்றால் விலகலாம் என அப்பணியைத் தொடர்கிறார் ஐஸ்வர்யா. அப்படி வரும் ஒரு போன்காலில் ஒருவரிடம் அன்பாகப் பேச ஆரம்பிக்கிறார் ஐஸ்வர்யா. ஆனால், ஒரு கட்டத்தில் அவர், ஐஸ்வர்யா யார் என்பதைத் தெரிந்து கொண்டு அவரை மிரட்ட ஆரம்பிக்கிறார். அதன் பின் என்ன நடக்கிறது என்பதுதான் படத்தின் மீதிக் கதை. எந்த மதப் பெண்களாக இருந்தாலும் பல பெண்கள் அவர்களது விருப்பம் போல வாழ்க்கையை அமைத்துக் கொள்ள முடியாத ஒரு கட்டமைப்புதான் நம்மிடம் உள்ளது. தங்கள் கனவுகளை, ஆசைகளை, லட்சியங்களைத் துறந்து ஏதோ ஒரு சூழலில் அவர்களது வாழ்க்கையை அமைத்துக் கொள்ளத் தள்ளப்படுகிறார்கள். அப்படியான ஒரு கதாபாத்திரமாகத்தான் 'பர்ஹானா' கதாபாத்திரம் சித்தரிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. இருப்பினும் அப்படிப்பட்ட பெண்கள் தங்களது பிரச்சினைகளைச் சமாளிக்க வேலைக்கு வந்தால் அவர்கள் சில தரம் கெட்ட மனிதர்களால் எவ்வளவு தொல்லைகளுக்கு ஆளாகிறார்கள் என்பதையும் இப்படம் சொல்ல முயல்கிறது. முஸ்லிம் குடும்பத்தைச் சேர்ந்தவர், மூன்று குழந்தைகளுக்கு அம்மாவான 'பர்ஹானா' கதாபாத்திரம், 'கால் சென்டர்' வேலையில் அதுவும் ஆபாசமான ஒரு வேலையில் இருக்கிறார் என்பது படத்தில் பெரும் முரணாக அமைந்திருக்கிறது. அது அக்கதாபாத்திரம் மீது அனுதாபத்தை வரவழைப்பதற்குப் பதிலாக எதற்கு இப்படிப்பட்ட வேலை, நாட்டில் வேறு வேலையே இல்லையா என யோசிக்க வைக்கிறது. எந்தக் கதாபாத்திரமாக இருந்தாலும் அதில் ஐக்கியப்படுத்துக் கொள்ளும் நடிகைகளில் படத்திற்குப் படம் தன்னை மெருகேற்றி வருகிறார் ஐஸ்வர்யா ராஜேஷ். இந்த 'பர்ஹானா' கதாபாத்திரத்திலும் அப்படியே தன்னை மாற்றிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார். யாரென்றே தெரியாத ஒருவன் தன்னை மிரட்டுவதைக் கண்டு ஆரம்பத்தில் பயந்தாலும் ஒரு கட்டத்தில் அதைத் துணிச்சலாய் எதிர்த்துப் போராடும் போது, பெண்களுக்கு எதையும் எதிர்கொள்ளும் தைரியம் வரவேண்டும் என்பதை உணர்த்துகிறது. நடிகர்கள் அனைவருக்கும் திருப்புமுனையான ஒரு கதாபாத்திரம் ஒரு நாள் வந்தே தீரும். அப்படி ஒரு கதாபாத்திரம் 'ஜித்தன்' ரமேஷுக்கு இப்படத்தின் மூலம் கிடைத்திருக்கிறது. படிக்காதவராக இருந்தாலும் வேலைக்குச் செல்லும் மனைவி ஐஸ்வர்யாவுக்காக உறுதுணையாக இருக்கும் ஒரு நிறைவான கதாபாத்திரம். நல்ல கதாபாத்திரங்கள் கொடுங்கள், நான் நடிக்கத் தயாராக இருக்கிறேன் என ஜித்தன் ரமேஷ் உணர்த்தியிருக்கிறார். ஐஸ்வர்யா ராஜேஷ் உடன் வேலை செய்பவராக அனு மோள். இப்படியான ஒரு ஆதரவு பணியிடத்தில் கிடைத்தால் அவ்வளவு ஆறுதலாக இருக்கும். தங்கள் விருப்பப்படி வாழ்க்கையை அமைத்துக் கொள்ளும் பெண்கள் கொஞ்சம் தடம் மாறினால் எப்படியான பிரச்சினையை எதிர்கொள்ள நேரிடும் என ஐஸ்வர்யா தத்தா கதாபாத்திரம் மூலம் சொல்லியிருக்கிறார் இயக்குனர். சில காட்சிகள்தான் என்றாலும் அழுத்தமான நடிப்பைப் பதிவு செய்திருக்கிறார் கிட்டி. செல்வராகவன் கதாபாத்திரம் படத்தின் சர்ப்ரைஸ். சென்னையின் மற்றுமொரு நெருக்கடியான பகுதியை இயல்பு மாறாமல் பதிவு செய்திருக்கிறார் ஒளிப்பதிவாளர் கோகுல் பினாய். ஜஸ்டின் பிரபாகரன் பின்னணி இசையில் சிறப்பிக்கிறார். ஐஸ்வர்யா ராஜேஷ், செல்வராகவன் இடையிலான தொலைபேசி உரையாடல்களை அவ்வளவு நீளமான காட்சிகளாக அமைத்திருப்பது ஆரம்பத்தில் தொய்வைத் தருகிறது, பொறுமையையும் சோதிக்கிறது. அதன்பிறகே படம் அதன் இலக்கை நோக்கி நகர்கிறது. சில கருத்துப் பரிமாற்றங்களை, கருத்து மோதல்களை, ஏன் சர்ச்சைகளைக் கூட இப்படம் உருவாக்கலாம். பர்ஹானா - பதட்டத்துடன்...

சின்னத்திரையிலிருந்து வௌ்ளித்திரைக்கு வந்தவர் நடிகை ஐஸ்வர்யா ராஜேஷ். 1990ம் ஆண்டு ஜனவரி 10ம் தேதி, சென்னையில் பிறந்த ஐஸ்வர்யா, இங்கு பட்டப்படிப்பு எல்லாம் முடித்து விளம்பரங்களில் நடிக்க ஆரம்பித்தார். பின்னர் சின்னத்திரையில் மானாட மயிலாடா நிகழ்ச்சியில் பட்டம் வென்று, அவர்களும் இவர்களும் என்ற படத்தின் மூலம் வௌ்ளித்திரையில் அறிமுகமானார். ஆனால் அதன்பின்னர் அவர் அட்டகத்தி படம் தான் அவரை அடையாளம் காட்டியது. தொடர்ந்து ரம்மி, பண்ணையாரும் பத்மினியும், திருடன் போலீஸ் போன்ற படங்களில் நடித்து பிரபலமான ஐஸ்வர்யா ராஜேஷ், காக்கா முட்டை, இடம் பொருள் ஏவல் உள்ளிட்ட பல படங்களில் நடித்து வருகிறார்.

Farhana review: Dispels the wrong perceptions about working women

However, director Nelson Venkatesan’s film subconsciously portrays men as monsters and turns boring after a point.

Director Nelson Venkatesan, known for films like Oru Naal Koothu (One Day’s Ado, 2016) and Monster (2022), comes up with a slow-moving crime drama titled Farhana .

Though the film is supposed to be a crime story, it comes across more like a romantic drama at first. It is only in the second half that it turns into a crime drama.

Farhana (Aishwarya Rajesh), a deeply religious and devout Muslim woman, lives with her husband Kareem (Jithan Ramesh) and their three children in her dad Ajeez Bhai’s (Played by Kittu) residence.

Like most other Muslim families in the vicinity, Farhana is a homemaker. Her husband and dad make a living through their footwear shop.

Business at the once-prosperous shop slows down and forces the family into penury. The financial status reaches an alarming state with the men unable to make even enough to pay the children’s school fees.

Out of desperation, Farhana, who is educated, expresses a desire to take up a job. While her dad is against letting women go to work, her husband supports her.

Through the help of a friend, she gets a job at a call centre. Her job is to call on behalf of a bank and get customers to sign up for credit cards.

Farhana is pleased with her job as it gives her financial independence.  She feels empowered and gains confidence.

As time goes by, she notices that her colleagues in another department make more money than her. She realises that employees working in that department receive three times more incentives than what she receives.

Farhana, too, expresses a desire to move to this new department so she can make more money. Though her friend Nithya (Anumol) advises her against the move, Farhana persists and succeeds in changing her department.

But it is only after joining the department that Farhana realises that the huge incentive her company is paying is not to sell anything but to have conversations, often of a sexual nature, with men. The longer the calls last, the more money the company makes.

Initially, Farhana feels repulsed by the sexual chats that people have. But just when she starts to hate the callers, she receives a call from a man called Dhayalan (Selva Raghavan) who refrains from making any sexual comments.

Soon, Farhana starts taking a liking to this caller who keeps calling her daily. Also, she gets drawn to him. What happens next is what the film is all about.

Addresses issues but turns boring

Nelson Venkatesan, who is known to advocate feminist thoughts in his films, does exactly that in Farhana , too.

He is spot on when it comes to addressing certain points like dispelling the myths and the wrong perceptions that some people have about working women.

However, the director should have taken more care while penning a script that is as sensitive as this.

For instance, Farhana’s firm, which is initially shown as an entity that deals with selling banking products, is also shown to have a division dealing in sex chats.

Also, the movie makes monsters out of men and tries to subconsciously drive home the point that all that men can think of is sex.

Besides, the film moves at a snail’s pace for the most part. The conversations that Farhana has with Dhayalan are long and turn boring after a point.

Actors at their best

Coming to performances, Aishwarya Rajesh delivers a splendid performance as Farhana. Be it her body language, mannerisms or dialogue delivery, she looks every bit the part.

Equally good is Jithan Ramesh who plays her husband. He comes up with a performance that can be termed his career’s best.

Director Selvaraghavan plays his part as the antagonist to perfection.

On the technical front, Justin Prabhakaran’s music is a big plus.

Be it the background score, which is apt, or the mellifluous songs, Justin impresses.

Quite A Satisfying Dramatic Thriller!
