Essay on My First Day in School in 100 words

It was a cloudy day when I took my first step into the compound of my school. I was carrying a new backpack that was filled with notebooks. Though the backpack was a bit heavy, instead of focusing on the weight, I was excited about the beginning of my journey on my first day in school.

My classroom was at the end of the corridor. As I entered my classroom, my class teacher introduced me to the class and made me feel welcome. Activities like reading, solving problems in groups, and sharing our lunch boxes slowly and steadily transformed the new student with a sense of belonging.

The whole day progressed with mixed excitement as well as emotions. As the bell rang, declaring the end of the school day, the school felt like a world of possibilities where the journey was more than textbooks.

It was a sunny day and the sun was shining brightly. With my new and attractive backpack, I was moving through the school gate. It was my first day in school and I was filled with nervousness and excitement. From the tower of the building to the playground everything was bigger than life. As a school student, I was about to enter a new world. 

The corridor was filled with the echo of students. As I entered the classroom, wearing a mix of curiosity and excitement, my classmates and class teacher welcomed me with a warm smile. After a round of introductions and some warm-up activities, strangers gradually started tuning into potential friends. At lunchtime, the cafeteria was filled with the smell of delicious food. However, I hesitated before joining the group of students but soon enough, I was laughing with my new friends and sharing stories. The unfamiliar were now my friends and transformed my mixed emotions into delightfulness. 

The bell rang for the next class and I stepped out for new learning in my new academic home. My first day of school had many memorable stories, with old subjects and new introductions of knowledge. The day was spent learning, sharing and making new memories.

My first day in school started by stepping onto the school bus with a bag full of books and a heart full of curiosity. It was like I was starting a new chapter in my life. After travelling a long way back, I stepped at the gate of my school. The school gate welcomed me with open arms and greeted me with a sense of excitement as well as nervousness.

As I entered the classroom, I found many new faces. Arranging my stuff on the seat, I sat next to an unknown, who later on turned into the best friend of my life. I entered my class with a welcoming smile, and later on, I turned everything in with ease. During our lunchtime, the cafeteria was filled with the energy of students. 

At first, I hesitated to interact with the children, but later on, I was a part of a group that invited me to join the table. At lunchtime, I made many new friends and was no longer a stranger. After having delicious food and chit-chatting with friends, we get back to our respective classrooms. Different subjects such as mathematics, science, and English never left the same impact as they did on the first day of school. 

The teacher taught the lessons so interestingly that we learned the chapter with a mix of laughter and learning. At the end of the day, we all went straight to the playground and enjoyed the swings. Moreover, in the playground, I also met many faces who were new to the school and had their first day in school, like me.

While returning home, I realised that my first day was not just about learning new subjects; it was about making new friends, sailing into new vibrant classrooms, and settling myself as a new student. The morning, which was full of uncertainty at the end of the day, came to an end with exciting adventures and endless possibilities. With new experiences, I look forward to new academic and personal growth in the wonderful world of education.

29 Back-to-School Writing Prompts for Middle and High School

The first day of school is approaching, and as a teacher, your schedule is likely already filling up with organizational and instructional prep work. However, despite all of your efforts, you may find that some students may emerge slowly from their summer hazes.

Before your middle school or high school students start their assigned reading, get them engaged with these back-to-school writing prompts. Fill up some class time with a few warm-up writing prompts below, or send students home with a larger assignment to get them back into the swing of things!

First Day of School Writing Prompts: Middle School Students

Classroom Prompt Assignments

• Stream of consciousness is when a character lets their thoughts continuously flow. Write a stream of consciousness story of your own and see where your thoughts take you.
• For the new school year, what new skill would you choose to learn if you had the time, money, and ability? Why?
• Write a critique of a book, movie, or show you recently read or watched. What were its strong points? What were its weak ones?
• Describe the reigning emotions you felt this summer. Why did you feel that way, and how do you think these emotions might change as the school year progresses?
• Choose a place you traveled to this summer, either locally or far away, and write a blog post about that location. Should other people visit as well? It could be a restaurant, a town, a shop, or a favorite spot to hang out.
• If there is a club, sport, class, or event you are excited about this year, write what you already know about it. Follow up with some expectations that you have for the experience and yourself.
• A flashbulb memory is a very detailed memory that you have from when you were young. Do you have any memories like that, and if so, what are they about? Are there any events that have happened recently that you think you will remember for a long time?
• Do you have any traditions? If not, which one would you want to start this year?
• Describe the most memorable school project that you’ve ever done. Would you like to do a similar project this year, and if so, how can it be adapted to what you’re learning now?
• If you could create a themed book display for your school library, what would it be? Which titles would it include, and why?

Take-Home Writing Assignments

• Write a letter to your younger self, and then another to your older self.
• One important rule of creative writing is to “Show Don’t Tell.” Write a 1,500-word short story in your favorite genre, following this rule.
• Write a local wildlife guide to your backyard, neighborhood, local park, or even the school itself. What flora and fauna exist there?
• Write a 1,000-word essay about an aspect of your summer that focuses on the five basic senses—Sight, Hearing, Smell, Taste, and Touch.

First Day of School Writing Prompts: High School Students

• Set three resolutions for yourself to accomplish this year and describe why those are the ones you chose.
• Write a list of How-To instructions for something that you know how to do. It could be making a meal, cleaning something, playing a game, babysitting, drawing a picture, etc.
• Create a dream college for you to attend once you graduate. Which academic programs does it offer? What sports, art classes, and clubs are offered? Where is it located?
• Write a short story using only dialogue. Work on creating different voices for each character. If it helps, take notes on each character before the dialogue starts. Does one character use slang? Is the other excitable? Is one character older than the other?
• Write a song on a subject that isn’t usually heard in other songs.
• Create a new class for your school to offer. Why do you think that class is necessary? What are the learning goals for that class, and what are the assignments?
• Which app do you spend the most time on? What are the positive aspects of using the app? What are the negatives?
• Is there a cause that you want to be a part of? What is it, and why is it important to you?
• Create a new club for your community or school. What is the club about? What are your goals, and who do you hope will join?
• Describe three things that you are looking forward to this year.
• What is your ultimate dream job? Research the industry, company, or role you’re interested in and report on what it is and how to get there. Conclude with your expectations before and after your research. Is the job what you thought it was?
• Choose a position with the local government to run for and outline a platform to run on. Then, write a speech to voters about your platform. Make sure to research your current representatives to learn what their platforms are.
• What is going on in the town or city that you live in? Research local events, places, volunteer opportunities, parks, clubs, etc. Visit a new place or attend a new event, then write a review of your experiences using descriptive language. Would you go back again? Why or why not?
• An executive summary is an intro to a business plan that is designed to grab the reader’s attention by summarizing what the new business will accomplish. Write an executive summary between 500 and 1,000 words for a product, venture, or business that you wish existed.
• Research a historical figure that looks a little like you do (bonus points if you’ve never heard of them before now). What did they accomplish?

I don’t really remember much of what happened as a child. All I know is that I grew up in a pretty normal household with a mom, dad and an older brother. Not much of the outside world scared me, or even intimidated me. I didn’t even know that there was much of an outside world. Everything I had at home, and around the neighborhood was everything I knew, and that was it. My mom efficiently prepared me for my first day of school in the way she thought to be the best. She would anticipate the day it would come, and assure me that everything was going to be okay. I remember her talking about the games we would play, how I would get to meet other kids my age and that there would be a nice teacher to guide me along my way. It didn’t sound that scary. I mostly liked the idea of getting snacks in the middle and getting to play with new toys, nap time wasn’t really my thing, though; I could always do that at home. There were some things my eager six-year-old self was excited about, but I never understood exactly why I had to go to school. My first day of school, being a big change in my life, is something I will always remember and relate to other dramatic changes which I have gone through. I’m sure that most people can relate to this in a sense that everyone has gone through a significant change in their life, no matter how mundane the event may be.

I wondered what the other kids were like, and why they had to go to school, too. I wondered if they colored, played or did things as well as I did. Probably not. My mom explained to me that I’ll be learning new things, and that I’ll have to go to school five times a week. For me at that age, a week seemed very long. What if I didn’t want to go? What if I just wanted to stay home? I really had mixed emotions about the subject.

After much prepping, the first day of school finally came. I remember getting out of the car and looking up at the structure in front of me. The building had colorful painting on its bricks on the sides, with a bright blue door. My eyes grew bigger, and I didn’t even realize I was holding my breath. All my mixed emotions drained into one at that very moment – fear. I was not sure of exactly what to expect, and I didn’t know anyone in there. How would I call my mom if I wanted something, if I was hungry or if I hurt myself? Suddenly, all of this school business did not seem like such a good idea. I turned to my mom who was holding her hand out to me and smiling. I gave her a worried look, which she caught on to right away. She stepped closer and nudged me towards the door. After she gave me a kiss on the forehead, that was it, she was gone and I was stuck in school, a place I was so unfamiliar with.

The bell rang and I proceeded to walk through the door. I took a big breath and looked around. The room was so bright and colorful and there were so many different artworks posted on the walls. I clearly remember a sea of pinks, yellows, blues and greens. There were pictures of animals, fruits and houses all drawn by other kids decorating the room. I recall there being desks desks with paper and crayons, and there was even a little corner with toys! This calmed me down, and made me feel like it was not as bad as I thought.

I looked at the other kids coming in; I did as they did and left my backpack on a hook near the door, and took a seat in an empty chair closest to me. We were greeted by an older lady; she told us that she was going to be our teacher. She started us off by calling us from a list one by one; to make sure we were all there. I also remember having name tags of some sort, I think we kept those on even a week after school started. At that time, I didn’t get why, I already knew my name after all.

We learned some songs, played a lot of games and because we all did what we were told, we got some time to play with the toys in the corner of the room. Next thing I know, we were given snacks. We then got to play outside on the playground. Because of all the playing, we got tired pretty soon, and they let us sleep. After a bit more games, another bell rang and the teacher told us it was time to go home. The day seemed really long since we did so much, but none of it was boring.

As soon as I grabbed my bag and stepped outside the door, I saw my mom waiting for on the side walk. I ran to her, and clearly remember feeling like I haven’t seen her in such a long time. During the car ride back home, I talked tirelessly about how the day went and all the new things I did, and how the other children were just like me, and most of them like the same things I liked. I asked her when I’ll go back, and I just got excited when she told me when I wake up in the morning, I’ll be going again.

I don’t remember ever feeling that anxious and excited all at once, all my expectations about school were mostly wrong. According to most researchers specializing in childhood psychology, children do tend to have very unrealistic expectations about their first day of school (Kendrick).

I had a pretty average childhood before kindergarten; I guess all my fears about changing my environment just came up because I was not sure of what to expect leaving the comforts of my home. This was the first significant time in which I realized that there is a bigger world out there, and there are so many things to learn, people to meet and things to do. I felt so grown-up at that time, being able to go somewhere where I didn’t need my parents, it was all just me, no help. I guess that this first day of kindergarten is much like all the other first days of school – like the first day of middle school, high school and even college. I built myself up with all these ideas, and you get all worked up about them, but once you’re there and you get the flow of how things are done, it becomes easier. When there is an event in your life, no matter how mundane or usual it may seem, it can change how you view things. Looking back at my first day of kindergarten and evaluating my thoughts as compared to what actually happened, I can say that I got overwhelmed more with the idea of kindergarten more than anything. Once you get over those negative thoughts in your head, you realize that it’s not that bad. You just have to rise above your thoughts and your fears. My first day of kindergarten will always be that event I’ll remember which changed how I saw things in life.

12 Engaging First Day of School Activities for Middle School

Continuing with our back to school series. In today’s post, I am sharing this handy selection of first day of school activities for middle school students. These exercises and games are meant to turn the first day of school into a fun and exciting learning experience setting the tone for a school year full of discovery, learning, and growth.

First Year of School Activities for Middle School

Here are some practical first day of school activities to use with your middle school students:

1. Icebreaker Games

• Two Truths and a Lie : Each student shares three statements about themselves – two truths and one lie. The rest of the class then tries to guess which statement is the lie. This encourages students to share something about themselves and fosters communication among the class.
• Human Bingo : Create a bingo card with different characteristics or experiences in each square (like “has a pet,” “has been to Europe,” “loves to read”). Students then mingle, trying to find classmates who match the descriptions on their bingo card. This not only helps students get to know each other but also encourages conversation and interaction.
• Scavenger Hunt : This can be particularly useful if you have things in your classroom that you want to familiarize students with. You could list various items or features around the classroom or school, and students need to find and document (maybe even with a selfie!) each item on the list.

2. Goal Setting

Starting the year with a goal-setting activity can be very motivating for students. Provide a template or let them design their own vision boards. You can ask students to list down their academic goals (like “Improve my math grade by one level,” “Read five books this semester”) and personal goals (such as “Join the school’s drama club,” “Learn to play a new instrument”). Encourage them to be specific with their goals. Vision boards can be a more creative approach to this. Let students cut out images and words from old magazines or print from the computer, which represents their goals. They can then glue these onto a poster board, creating a visual representation of their goals for the year.

2. Classroom Rules Discussion

Instead of just giving the students a list of rules, engage them in the process of creating them using a student-centered approach. Ask students what kind of environment they think would be most conducive to learning. What behaviors should be encouraged? Which ones should be discouraged? As a class, work together to turn these ideas into a list of “class norms” or rules. This gives students a sense of ownership and responsibility for their classroom culture.

3. Personalized Name Tags

Giving students the opportunity to create their own name tags can be a fun and creative first-day activity. Provide each student with a cardstock rectangle for their name tag. Provide markers, colored pencils, stickers, or other art supplies. Instruct students to include their name prominently on the tag, and to fill the rest of the space with drawings or symbols that represent them, their hobbies, favorite books, favorite subject in school, etc. Once everyone has finished, you can have a sharing session where each student presents their name tag to the class and explains their chosen symbols. This not only makes them feel a part of the classroom, but also helps their classmates (and you) get to know them better.

4. “Get to Know Me” Presentation

This activity encourages students to share a bit about themselves and their lives outside of school. Students prepare a short presentation (maybe 3-5 slides) about themselves. They can include information about their family, their hobbies, their favorite books or movies, what they did over the summer, etc. Encourage them to include pictures or other visual elements in their presentation. Depending on your class size and schedule, students can present on the first day, or you can spread the presentations out over the first week of school.

5. Interview Each Other

Pairing students up for interviews can be a fun and interactive way for students to get to know each other. First, provide a list of questions that students can ask their partners. These could include questions about hobbies, favorite and least favorite school subjects, favorite books or movies, interesting experiences, etc. Have students pair up, and give them a set amount of time (5-10 minutes per person) to interview each other. After the interviews, you can have a few pairs share what they learned about their partner with the class. This not only encourages active listening but also allows the entire class to get to know each other better. This activity also sets a precedent for students working in pairs, which can be a common setup for future class activities.

6. Interactive Quizzes

Using tools like Kahoot or Quizizz can be a fun, interactive way to get students engaged and also assess their prior knowledge. You can create a quiz related to the subject you will be teaching, which can help you understand what students already know, and where gaps might be. For instance, if you’re a history teacher, you could have a quiz on historical events or figures. Alternatively, a general knowledge or fun facts quiz can be a light-hearted way to ease into the school year, particularly if students are feeling nervous. These tools also allow for competitiveness, as students can see their names on the leaderboard. This can be motivating and engaging for many students.

7. Group Project

Group projects are a great way to encourage cooperation and teamwork . For a subject-related project, you might divide students into small groups and have them create a poster or a presentation on a specific topic. For instance, in a science class, each group could be assigned a different aspect of the solar system to research and present. Alternatively, a more creative, fun group project might be creating a class mural or designing a dream school. This can help students bond over shared creativity and problem-solving. Remember to establish group norms and expectations to ensure that all students participate and collaborate effectively.

8. “A Letter to My Future Self”

This introspective activity allows students to reflect on their present state and their hopes for the future. Instruct students to write a letter to their future selves, reflecting on their current feelings, goals, and expectations. They might write about their hopes for the school year, what they’re nervous about, or what they’re looking forward to. Seal the letters in envelopes, and store them away until the end of the school year. Reopening and reading the letters at the end of the year can be a powerful experience for students. It allows them to see their growth over the year and reflect on how they’ve met or adjusted their goals and expectations.

9. Syllabus Quiz Game

To make the review of the syllabus more interactive and engaging, consider turning it into a game. You could use a tool like Kahoot or Quizizz to create a digital quiz, or simply ask questions aloud and have teams write down their answers. This approach encourages students to pay attention to important details in the syllabus and ask any questions they may have.

10. Classroom Scavenger Hunt

A scavenger hunt can be a fun and active way to familiarize students with the classroom and the school. Create a list of items or locations for students to find. These could be things in the classroom (like a certain book or supply), or locations around the school (like the library or the nurse’s office). Using a text relevant to your subject on the first day can set the tone for the kind of work you’ll be doing in class. Choose a short story or article related to the subject you’re teaching. Try to select something engaging but not too challenging, as this activity is more about sparking discussion and less about testing comprehension skills. After reading, lead a class discussion on the text. Ask students about their thoughts, their reactions, and any questions they may have. Make sure to review these surveys early in the year, as they can provide valuable insight into how to best teach and motivate each student. There are many online tools you can use to create and distribute these surveys, such as Google Forms or SurveyMonkey. However, a simple paper survey can work just as well.
