Introduction

  • Vision & Mission Statement
  • Academic Programmes
  • Publications

English language and literary studies, both products of British colonialism, found their institutional roots first in the colonies and later at home. It's noteworthy that some of the oldest centers of English literary studies reside in the South Asian subcontinent. The Institute of English Language and Literature at GCU stands as a testament to this rich legacy, established in 1873 under the auspices of Calcutta University before affiliating with the University of the Punjab. This tradition endured until 1997, when Government College Lahore transitioned into a degree-awarding institution. A pivotal moment came in 2003, symbolized by the addition of the letter "U" to the revered acronym "GC," signifying its elevation to university status. Through these transformations, the Institute has remained steadfast as the oldest center for postgraduate studies in English in the country.

Despite the passage of time and shifting socio-political landscapes, English maintains its status as the official language of Pakistan, serving as the lingua franca of governance, commerce, and education at the postgraduate level. Thus, the Institute of English Language and Literature at GCU serves a dual purpose: nurturing proficiency in English language alongside fostering literary inquiry and appreciation. Additionally, our curriculum extends beyond English to include courses in French language and Education, further enriching the academic tapestry of our institution.

At the heart of our endeavors lies a dedicated and qualified faculty, committed to fostering effective pedagogy, conducting cutting-edge research, and actively engaging with the public and the community. Aligned with the core values of GCU, our faculty embodies the ethos of "courage to know" and "educating people for tomorrow."

Aligned with these values, we prioritize: Freedom of expression and association: We support the right to freely express ideas and opinions, creating an environment where diverse perspectives are welcomed. Inclusivity: We embrace diversity and strive to create an inclusive space where everyone feels valued. Democratic participation: We encourage active engagement in academic and civic life. Equality: We believe in equal rights and opportunities for all individuals. Pluralism, tolerance, and mutual respect: We promote a culture of respect for diverse perspectives. Combatting discrimination and prejudice: We stand against discrimination, prejudice, sexism, and other barriers to social progress.

The programmes we offer aim to produce empowered learners with strong academic and transferable skills. We, at the Institute of English Language and Literature, welcome you to this ancient and prestigious seat of learning.
