Would you be able to cancel all your subscriptions, such as Netflix, Amazon, or HBO?

Streaming platforms have become one of the leading entertainment avenues around the world.

Today there are numerous platforms to enjoy the most blockbuster movies, series that will make you die laughing, and even documentaries from National Geographic itself!

Some sites indeed require a subscription and a monthly fee to access them. However, there are other sites where you will find real gems in their catalog that are free and do not require you to open an account. I know what you are thinking, and you can relax because the platforms I will tell you about are completely legal!

P.S.: I have consulted with a friend who studied cinema and is a freak of these webs, so he made me a selection of the best free and paid platforms.

Ready to discover the best streaming platforms where you can enjoy the best movies and series? Let’s start!

Table of Contents ▼ ▶

Best Free Platforms

1. rtve play.

One of the best websites is RTVE Play, the official website of “Televisión Española,” where you will find TV shows, series, and, of course, movies (more than 300) for FREE! Yes, you read it right!

RTVE’s platform offers quality content for all types of audiences, both Spanish and international productions.

If you are looking for a platform to watch classic films, this is the one, and if you are looking for a venue with more modern films, this is also the one.

Like many other platforms, RTVE Play will recommend titles. It will show you lists according to your genres or theme preferences.

You can access its entire catalog whether you are registered or not.

I recommend you register, as you get many advantages! Some of these advantages are saving the movies you like the most, continuing a movie where you left off, and even downloading content to watch offline. All of this registering for free!! This can sound crazy as we pay for most of the platforms we have nowadays, and they give the same service that RTVE Play provides.

You can watch movies such as the viral and multi-awarded movie The Invisible Thread or the famous Britannic comedy series The Durrels. RTVE’s catalog is constantly changing, which is very positive.

Undoubtedly, this free service will delight all types of audiences and will save you a few euros/dollars per month in subscriptions to other platforms!

What words come to your mind when it comes to free online movie streaming sites? You might think of words like “illegal,” “pirate,” and “copyright infringement”… The emergence of Tubi TV completely overthrows these traditional views. Tubi TV could be described in 4 adjectives: free, legal, HD, and full-length. Yep, that’s right! You’re able to have massive access to excellent titles.

How does Tubi generate money if it’s a free website, then? Well, Tubi TV survives by having ad contracts with well-known companies such as Paramount, Lionsgate, and MGM, among many others.

Tubi is known for being a movie streaming website for Spanish films. It offers a thousand Spanish movies, TV shows for adults, and over 30 children’s shows, including plenty of semi-recent hits like The Objects of Love, Aurora , and Raúl.

Do I have to create an account to watch something? In many platforms, you do, but this is not one of those platforms. You don’t have to create an account before watching anything if you don’t want to. You can reduce the resolution of the content you are watching on this platform, and the movies are free to watch. Even better, the website is very easy to navigate, which is a huge plus.

The negative thing is that Tubi is ad-supported. But don’t worry because this problem has an easy solution, as Tubi doesn’t prevent you from streaming with an ad-blocker installer.

Tubi is available in many countries, although the content differs from one country to another. Still, regardless of that, there is always a Spanish-language category that allows you to start learning Spanish!!

In case you’re wondering, here are the best Spanish shows that will help you learn Spanish!

3. Rakuten TV

Rakuten is a free platform where you can see some Spanish movies and series.

Most of the movies you can find on this platform are Spanish, but if you are still learning the language, you can choose to stream in English and put Spanish subtitles.

Some movies and series do not allow you to watch them for free, and you have to rent them by paying a small fee.

To be able to watch movies, you have to register; many people try to avoid this type of procedure as it can take a little bit of time. But think about it, you are registering on a webpage where you can rent movies and even watch some of them for free!

The free movies they have, vary in all genres, from comedy films like Champions , and Toc Toc , crime thrillers like Marshland , to horror movies like REC , among many other genres and films.

Rakuten TV is an ad-supported service, just like Tubi, but don’t worry; as I said before, just by installing an ad-blocker, your problem is solved! However, it is just one minute of ads, usually, before the movie starts, so this isn’t a big issue as it isn’t too annoying. The ads on the platform are less annoying than on TV; the good thing is that you have the ads before you start streaming the movie.

This platform is available in 42 European countries, including Spain, Italy, Germany, France, and the UK.

4. Popcornflix

As I know you like free things, here’s another free platform. Yes, the website is entirely free, which is a tremendous bonus!

Even though it’s a free website, some people argue that the movies are a little bit old, which for other people is fascinating and that they enjoy watching.

Many people know PopcornFlix for its vast catalog of English movies, but did you know that you can find Spanish films on this platform too?

Depending on what you are looking for, this platform will fit you better. There are some incredible Spanish movies on this webpage, which I invite you to watch.

As it’s a free platform, you will see their frequent commercial breaks to generate advertising revenue. In fact, the biggest problem we have with this service is that very few Spanish movies offer English subtitles, and those that do are displayed in the top-left of the screen, which can be a little annoying.

This platform has a huge plus, as creating an account is unnecessary. Which means that you don’t have to share personal information. However, if you want to subscribe, you can, you would put your email address, and that would be it. Signing up allows you to fine-tune your streaming experience, rate content, and do some interactive things like creating GIFs based on what you’re watching.

ViX is another free streaming service. It has more than 20.000 hours of content to watch on demand. You can watch movies, shows, series…

Everything you think of is on this platform, and you can watch it in Spanish! A positive thing about this platform is that no credit card or subscription is required. You can choose your favorite genre and download it to start watching it straight away!

What are you going to love most about the ViX platform? There are thousands of hours of movies and shows. You will not get bored because you will see that they are constantly adding new content. ViX has commercial advertisements like all free platforms, but they don’t have as many ads as on TV nowadays.

ViX has a free app, and it´s available on smartphones, computers, Android TV, Apple TV devices…

Pierluigi Gazzolo, the President and Chief Transformation Officer of Televisa Univision, when he launched ViX in Spain, he said that it was going to mark a before and after in Spanish-language streaming. He believed this was an example of how the world is changing and society and companies are changing with it. With this platform, from his point of view, we are adding another giant step in transforming the new television.

Hundreds of millions of Spanish speakers living in the US will have a dedicated streaming platform made for Spanish speakers and created by Spanish speakers, which is excellent! Go and explore this platform to feel like a proper Spanish person!

Best Paid Platforms

What can I say about one of the most important streaming services in the world? 598 million people have Netflix in Spain!

Keep reading to learn why this platform is so popular! “Bella Chao” is one of the most famous phrases from the renowned series Money Heist , a series that almost every Spaniard has watched, and it’s on this platform.

Netflix is available in over 190 countries, and prices vary depending on your geolocation. This platform has thousands of movies, documentaries, and tv shows.

If you want to know which are some of the most popular Spanish series, you have to click on the following post:

13 Spanish Shows That Will Make It Hard to Leave Your Sofa

To have access, you have to register first, and then you get a free one-month trial, but after that, you start paying for the services. Remember, Netflix is one of the best websites for watching movies worldwide. It is available anywhere you go!

Free platforms are great but immediately when you log in, it becomes clear that there are several significant differences between Netflix and the free services above. First of all, Netflix doesn’t have ads!

Recently, Netflix has included a version with a cheaper subscription that does include ads.

Further, Netflix has a massive library of Spanish movies , such as The Platform , The Invisible Guest , Perfect Strangers , and Spanish Affair , among many others. It also offers thousands of TV shows, documentaries, and cartoons, with more added weekly. Also, the majority have subtitle support, and many even provide audio-descriptive captions.

7. Prime Video

Amazon Prime is just like Netflix, it’s also available anywhere in the world, and there are many Spanish movies.

Amazon Prime is nowadays becoming popular for the documentaries they do with famous people such as influencers like Dulceida. You have to sign up first to start watching it. You will be offered one month of a free trial, like Netflix.

The positive thing is that you have Prime Video included for free with an Amazon Prime account, so you get two services in one. One of the great things about Amazon Prime is that it lets you add channel packs to watch all your content in one place. The platform has no ads, and movies are highly enjoyable and popular!

Prime Video is available almost everywhere, and it makes sense that it’d have an impressive selection of Spanish movies in Spanish-speaking countries.

Amazon Prime Video offers a fantastic catalog; if you are a big fan of Christmas movies, there are plenty! Here’s an article with some of my favorites:

11 Spanish Christmas Movies to enjoy a Lovely Family Evening

Suppose I had to tell you one negative thing about Amazon Prime… You can’t filter titles by language, which can be somewhat frustrating sometimes. To find Spanish movies, you must browse the international category and ignore all of the films that aren’t in Spanish.

Don’t start a movie or a series if you are in Spain and you are going back to the US in one day because if you haven’t finished, you might not be able to continue watching it in your country as Amazon Prime Video changes its content based on your location.

You can access more than 300 series and 700 movies with HBO Max Spain.

Its catalog is updated every week. They create its own production sometimes and have content from other channels. Among the HBO Spain originals, you will find some of the most awarded and critically acclaimed fiction movies and series of recent years.

HBO Max is a platform where you can watch content such as series, movies, or documentaries on streaming. This means that the content you watch will always be online.

HBO is just like Netflix and Amazon Prime; they all do the same thing, but the content is sometimes different. For example, HBO has one of the most popular series called 30 Coins that Netflix doesn’t have. But in exchange, Netflix has Money Heist, and HBO doesn’t. The same happens with many other movies, series, and documentaries.

To access HBO content, you must create an HBO platform account. Once you have it, you can start watching all the content you want, as long as it is available within the HBO Spain catalog. It is as simple as that, although you have to pay every month, you have one week free.

If you run out of Internet connection, you can download what you want to watch and save it to play anytime. In addition, this platform allows you to link multiple devices to your account and more than one simultaneous playback, so you can share it with your family and friends!

9. Disney +

Do you want to remember all the movies you watched when you were a child ? Then Disney+ is your platform!

This streaming service allows you to watch hundreds of movies, series, documentaries, and shorts from production companies like Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic, and Star.

You can find some animated content, such as the kid’s movie Planet 51. Disney + has some of the greatest content creators in history, and you’ll always find something to watch!

If you want to know what are some of the best Spanish movies for kids you cannot miss this article:

7 Spanish Movies That Your Kids Will Absolutely Love!

They also have a section in Disney+ for people over 18 where you can find series such as Only Murders in the Building.

To enjoy this fantastic platform, you must pay 8,99€ per month.

This platform was first launched in three countries: the United States, Canada, and the Netherlands. It then reached Australia, New Zealand, and finally, Europe.

Citizens of Spain have enjoyed Disney content since its official launch in March 2020. They launched this platform when Spanish people were confined as it was during COVID-19. It became trendy during this period and is still very popular nowadays!

Filmin is a streaming platform that offers two options and adapts to you like one of the best. On the one hand, there is a monthly subscription like the ones we usually use. On the other hand, there is the possibility of paying a small amount of money if you just want to see a movie, which in this case, you can rent it.

What do I recommend to you? I believe the best option is the subscription, as you can access the entire catalog. You can see many of the best miniseries of the moment, children’s series, and cartoon movies, both classic and current. The choice is only yours, depending on how much you think you will use this platform.

The advantage of Filmin is that everything is very organized and well-categorized. Everything is very easy to use and very intuitive. You can find collections by genre and by specific topics, such as biographies of writers or the series you watched in your childhood to watch them again! These types of things mark the difference from other platforms.

The great advantage of Filmin is that you will find not only the best-known series or the most popular movies but all kinds of independent movies, series, and short films that are perfect if you are looking for something different!!

What differentiates Filmin from other platforms that offer movies and TV series is that it is based on content specialization. It is full of less commercial and less Hollywood independent films.

I bet you already knew all the paid platforms, but have you heard about any of the free ones?

I have to admit that I’m a big fan of some of them, especially Netflix and Amazon. There’s a great variety of great movies and super interesting documentaries!

But it is true that having so many options sometimes we can feel overwhelmed because it takes us almost longer to choose the movie than to watch it! Does it happen to you too?

If you have any recommendations, we would love to hear from you!

How to watch Spanish movies online for free

Who doesn’t like free movies? Below, we’ll cover the best free streaming services for Spanish movies, and give you an idea as to what kind of films each of them offers. We’ll also let you know if they offer movies in Spanish with English subtitles.

Rakuten TV

Rakuten is mostly known for its movie rental service, but it also offers more than 100 free-to-watch films (including Dredd , La Señal , and St. Vincent ), as well as a handful of free children’s TV shows like Morph and Glumpers .

These are all available in Spanish, although many can be viewed in English with Spanish subtitles. Users do have to create an account before watching anything, but this just requires you to verify your email address.

As Rakuten TV is an ad-supported service, you’ll have to disable your ad-blocker before it’ll let you stream anything. However, there’s usually only one minute of ads at most before the movie starts, so this isn’t a major issue. Note that these ads will pause themselves if you switch to another browser tab.

Available in: 42 European countries including Spain, Italy, Germany, France, and the UK. Spanish movies are only available in Spain, however.

Tubi TV

Tubi offers access to hundreds of free Spanish movies and over 30 children’s TV shows, including plenty of semi-recent hits like The Objects of Love , Aurora , and Raúl . There’s no need to create an account before watching and although this service is ad-supported, it doesn’t prevent you from streaming with an ad-blocker installed.

Users can choose to reduce the video quality if their internet connection is particularly slow. Further, most of the movies offer English subtitles, and the ones that don’t tend to be lower-budget, straight-to-video type releases.

Available: Worldwide, except for in European countries. Content changes from one country to another but regardless of where you are, there is always a Spanish-language category.

Pluto TV

Pluto TV is a bit of a strange service; it’s designed to mimic traditional TV with never-ending playlists of videos sorted into different “channels.” That said, it also offers a strong on-demand library and a dedicated Latino section with 22 live Spanish channels, six of which are devoted entirely to movies.

So what kind of content can you expect to find? Well, there are plenty of recognizable titles including Daybreakers , War of the Worlds, and Friday the 13th , plus an entire channel that just plays old, Spanish-dubbed Bond movies. Ads are shown more frequently than on some other services, but the breaks are far shorter than if you were actually watching on TV.

Many of the titles we tested supported English subtitles, and we were pleased to find a good range of customizable options here. For instance, it’s possible to change the size, color, and opacity of the font.

Available in: Dozens of countries worldwide. That said countries with a large Spanish-speaking population like the US, Mexico, and Colombia have the most Spanish content. Interestingly, users in Spain have no Spanish movies available due to a significantly smaller European library.

Popcornflix

Popcorn Flix

Popcornflix primarily provides English-language content, but it offers a few dozen Spanish movies too, including dubbed versions of The Guilty , Under Heavy Fire , and Turn the River . Most of this platform’s Spanish films are fairly old at this point, and there’s an overabundance of low-budget horror movies, but that’s pretty much parred for the course with a free streaming service.

On the plus side, you can watch without creating an account. The biggest problem we have with this service is that very few Spanish movies offer English subtitles, and those that do display them in the top-left of the screen.

Available: US and Canada. Interestingly, content seems to be blocked on a film-by-film basis, with most Spanish-language titles available worldwide.

Best paid Spanish movie streaming services

Although you may well find something to watch on the platforms above, it goes without saying that paid streaming services tend to have higher-quality content. Below, we’ll explore some of the streaming services with the best collections of Spanish movies.

Netflix Spain

Netflix might be an obvious choice, but that’s only because it’s one of the biggest streaming services in the world. Prices vary from one country to another, but monthly subscriptions start at $8.99 in the US and €7.99 in Spain, and plans come with a one-month free trial.

Immediately upon logging in, it becomes clear that there are several major differences between Netflix and the free services above. There are no ads for a start. Further, Netflix has a huge library of Spanish movies (such as No Estoy Loca , Perdida , and the award-winning Roma ), but also offers thousands of TV shows, documentaries, and cartoons, with more being added all the time. Further, most have subtitle support, and many even offer audio-descriptive captions.

Availability: Over 190 countries worldwide, but the catalog differs depending on your location. Spanish-speaking countries are more likely to have Spanish-language movies and TV shows available.

Pantaya

Pantaya is a lesser-known service but it’s owned by Lionsgate, and as such, can afford to offer a solid mixture of recognizable titles and original content. There’s plenty of variety, too, with everything from reality TV to children’s shows to movies ( Día de Muertos , Soy De Rancho , and 3 Metros Sombre el Cielo , for instance). This service costs $5.99 USD per month, although it comes with a seven-day free trial so you can try it out before committing.

While newer content tends to offer subtitles, many of Pantaya’s classic movies don’t. Additionally, you’ll need a payment method linked to a US address to sign up. On the plus side, users can download most films and TV shows for offline viewing.

Available: Pantaya is only available in the United States, so you will need a US IP address if you’re traveling abroad.

Hulu Spain

Hulu has a huge library of Spanish-language content. As well as letting you stream movies like Desperado , Miss Bala , and Yuli , this service offers telenovelas ( Land of Kings , Cappadocia ), kid’s TV shows ( El Perro y El Gato ), and English-language shows dubbed over in Spanish ( CSI , Fear the Walking Dead , WWE ).

This service comes with a one-month free trial, and afterward costs $5.99 USD per month. English subtitles are available on most titles, but you also have the option of Spanish subtitles on all Spanish-language content and Hulu Original shows like The Handmaid’s Tale .

Available in: Hulu’s Spanish-language content is only available in the US.

Amazon Prime

Spanish Amazon Prime

Amazon Prime Video is available almost everywhere, and it makes sense that in Spanish-speaking countries, it’d have an impressive selection of Spanish movies. In the US, for instance, you can stream titles like No Rest for the Wicked , Il Trovatore , and La Buena Vida . If we had one complaint, it’s that you can’t filter titles by language. This means that, to find Spanish movies, you have to browse the international category and ignore all of the films that aren’t in Spanish.

Prime Video is included for free with an Amazon Prime account. This comes with a free one-month trial, after which they cost $12.99 USD per month. One of the great things about this service is that it lets you add channel packs so you can watch all of your content in one place; Pantaya and Flixlatino offer Prime addons for an extra $5.99 and $2.99 per month, respectively.

Note: Amazon Prime Video changes its content based on your location. As such, you’ll likely find that there are more Spanish movies in places like Mexico, Spain, and Argentina .

Sling TV

Streaming Spanish movies: Frequently Asked Questions

I’ve found a great site for spanish movies - how do i know if it’s legitimate.

Unfortunately, there are thousands of websites out there claiming to let you watch movies in Spanish, and not all of them are legitimate. Remember: if something appears too good to be true, it usually is. This means that if a website claims to have movies that are still in theaters, or that only came out recently, and is willing to let you watch for free, it’s likely not using official sources.

These sites tend to provide very low-quality video, often filmed right there in the movie theater. Further, they’re notoriously unreliable, since their links can be taken offline at any moment for copyright violation. We strongly recommend that you only use reputable, well-established streaming services when trying to watch Spanish movies online.

Can I get in trouble for watching Spanish movies online?

First things first: if you’re watching Spanish movies on a legitimate streaming service (like Netflix or Tubi), you aren’t doing anything wrong. So how do you tell if your chosen service is legitimate? The number one sign is that it’s mainstream; other people are talking about it, and it’s been covered by major news outlets.

One other thing to watch out for: if a site claims to have every movie you can think of, even those that have only just been released in cinemas, it almost certainly uses unofficial sources and should not be trusted.

You’re only really likely to get into trouble if you obtain movies through unofficial means like piracy sites or torrents. We’ve even seen cases where pirates are contacted by a film’s copyright holder and threatened with huge fines. Of course, not all of the consequences are legal in nature, since people who illegally download movies are also at risk of infecting their computers with malware, which could lead to identity theft, loss of data, or blackmail.

Can I use a free VPN to watch Spanish movies online?

It’s recommended to avoid using free VPNs to stream Spanish movies online as they are often unreliable, use lackluster encryption, and struggle to bypass geo-restrictions.

What makes Spanish movies so great?

Spanish movies captivate a global audience with their unique fusion of storytelling, cultural richness, and emotional depth. These films stand out for their ability to craft intricate narratives that delve into universal themes like love, identity, and social justice, while also exploring the subtleties of Spanish and Latin American life. Directors like  Pedro Almodóvar  and  Guillermo del Toro , among others, have played a pivotal role in showcasing the vibrancy of Spanish-speaking cultures on the world stage, presenting a variety of genres from surreal fantasy to gritty realism.

The cinematography in Spanish films is a standout, frequently capturing the breathtaking landscapes and urban settings of Spain and Latin America, adding an extra layer of beauty and atmosphere to the storytelling.

12 Spanish Movies You Can Watch Online For Free

Sharing is caring!

Looking for Spanish movies you can watch online for free?

Finding movies in Spanish online might not always be easy when you are not actually in a Spanish speaking country.

Assuming you have already watched every Spanish-language movie on Netflix (if you haven’t check here how you can easily find foreign language content on Netflix).

spanish movie websites with english subtitles

Does learning languages through movies actually work?

Yes, it most certainly does. Here’s why.

Language is culture

The themes that are featured in movies are often very telling of the things that are big issues in a country. Who are the main characters, who are the ‘good guys’, who are the villains?

Though fictional, most movies give you a great look inside the lives of actual native speakers. You can see which themes are of importance and how people handle different situations in life.

If you don’t have the money to travel across the world and drown yourself in native speakers, watching movies is a good substitute, especially when you can watch them for free.

Language is culture, and culture is language. Understanding more about the culture will make it easier to understand the language.

Language immersion

Another important thing when learning a language is that it is the easiest way to be exposed to real speech. Especially if you don’t live in the country of your target language, watching movies is an excellent way of actually immersing yourself in real speech.

In comparison to most language courses, these conversations aren’t meant to perfectly match the words you just had to study, and they won’t be pronounced clearly with time in between in order for you to process what has just been said.

Much of what you will hear you won’t be able to understand and that is exactly why you should watch it.

The best thing is that you are exposed to the way native people speak without having to respond to it. You also have the ability to add subtitles, be it in your own language or the language you are trying to learn, or pause it and write things down (if necessary).

It’s for any skill level

While most language learning materials are geared towards one skill level, watching movies and series is great for anyone trying to improve their skills. If you are starting out it can make you get used to the sound of the language and the speed of natural speech, and when you are already fluent you can use it to keep up your skills and diversify your vocabulary.

You can watch any movie with subtitles in your own language, subtitles in your target language and ultimately even without (though keeping subtitles in your target language might actually beneficial).

Each person is different, and therefore each person will learn a language in a different way. No matter what your skill level is, the chances are you will learn new words and expressions.

It’s enjoyable

Most importantly – watching movies is fun. Although memorizing words from a book can be an important way of studying vocabulary, most people won’t find much joy in the actual process of repeating these words over and over again.

Finding something you enjoy, like watching movies, and combining it with language learning is the perfect way of learning a new language without feeling like you are actually doing anything.

Not only that, but doing something fun will ensure you actually do it on a regular basis, and consistency is the most important factor for your success.

How to Watch the Best Spanish Movies with Spanish Subtitles

When learning Spanish as a beginner, I recommend watching Spanish movies with English subtitles. For more advanced learners, it’s better to watch Spanish movies with Spanish subtitles. Eventually, you’ll be able to watch Spanish movies without any subtitles at all, which is even more effective!

Ideally, you should watch the movie more than once. First with subtitles, then without. You probably won’t be surprised to find that many characters speak very fast, especially in Spanish movies. It may be easier to start with Latin American films because characters speak the Spanish language a bit slower.

Obviously, if you don’t know any Spanish at all, it’s best to learn basic vocabulary before watching Spanish movies. The  spaced repetition system in the MosaLingua apps is a highly effective tool for learning vocabulary quickly. There is also pronunciation for every flashcard!

It’s not always easy to find DVDs of Spanish movies. You’re never really sure what you’re getting or if it will come with subtitles, even on Amazon! Plus, some DVDs have regional restrictions that prevent you from playing them in certain areas. Be sure to check the region code before you buy (look for a 1 for the US and Canada).

Luckily, you can find more and more Spanish-language movies on all of the major streaming platforms, including Netflix , Hulu , Disney+ , and Amazon Prime . All of the movies listed above are currently available on Netflix.

If you have a library card in the US, you might also have access to Kanopy . It’s a free video-on-demand service that offers mainly independent films and documentaries, some of which are in foreign languages, including Spanish.

If you download movies online, they might not always come with subtitles, which are very useful for learners!

To find movie subtitles, you can use an excellent website called Opensubtitles.org . It has a huge collection of subtitles in many languages and it’s not illegal!

There are also software programs that let you easily download all the subtitles that you want for free. We like SubDownloader .

You need to give the film file and the subtitle file the same name (but keep their respective extensions).

For example:

a_great_film.avi a_great_film.srt

I recommend using VLC Media Player to watch the films with subtitles. This article gives step-by-step instructions on how to sync up your subtitle file with your movie, in case you’re having trouble.

Now, It’s Up to You!

If you know of any other great Spanish films, let us know about them in the comments!

Thank you very much. This is a useful resource, and you have given me a good reason to watch Penelope Cruz.

Anytime! She’s been in a lot of great movies that could also go on this list. Happy viewing and learning!

I think all those movies are OK… but they are old, I’d go for actual movies like ‘La Isla Mínima’ ‘El niño’ or ‘Magical Girl’.

Hi Sabareesh,

are u from Tamil Nadu, are u learning spanish?

You completely forgot Pan's Labyrinth(El laberinto del fauno).

Indeed, it’s a very good spanish movie! Thanks

Nice list. Will definitely add this to my to-watch!

I think that watching movies of the language we’re trying to study is a really effective way to learn it. We learn accents and everyday words we don’t get to read of in the usual books for study.

I personally have been enjoying short films, since they’re not as time-consuming as a full movie – so it’s a great, quick resource, plus there are a number of great ones found online 🙂

List of Sites Where You Can Watch Spanish Videos with Spanish Subtitles or Transcripts Online

by Andrew | Sep 30, 2012 | Popular , Spanish | 0 comments

Tis but a scratch!

It took me a little over a year to scrape together a list for you guys (lots of help from readers like you sending me suggestions), but I’ve finally got a respectable-sized list for you guys.  Just like my List of Best Free Sites to Watch Spanish TV Online , I will be constantly updating and adding to this list, so bookmark it and check back in on it occasionally.

Subtitles vs. Transcripts

There’s no difference, don’t worry about it, that’s why I haven’t distinguished between the two in the list below and the ones with transcripts instead of subtitles are mixed in with the ones with subtitles.  A transcript is just a word-for-word copy of precisely what was said in the language that it was said in, so if you think about it subtitles are just a transcript that’s been embedded into the video for you and synced up so that you see the line as it’s being said, that’s all.  They’re functionally the same for our purposes here.

Alright, here we go!

Spanish TV Shows and Telenovelas (“telenovela” is Spanish for “soap opera”)

1.  Check out  Yabla  for Spanish videos with Spanish subtitles and so much more .  This is a fantastic website and my top recommendation if you’re looking for Spanish videos to learn Spanish with .  I emphasize the last part because that’s specifically and solely what this site is designed for, and it’s the only one on this list that is solely intended for that purpose.  What they do is take Spanish-language media that was originally produced in Spanish-speaking countries and intended for native speakers (TV shows, movies, news casts, cartoons, documentaries, etc.) and then integrate them into a whole Spanish-learning interface they have that allows you to see word-for-word Spanish subtitles and their English translation at the same time  (you can turn either or both off while watching the video), plus you can click on any word in the subtitles and it will automatically pull up the definition in the dictionary next to the video player as well as add that word to your flashcards for later review.  They also include a vocabulary learning game, quizzes, and a flashcard system that’s very easy to use and all on the same page as the video you’re watching.

Also, I did a whole extensive review of Yabla here that I recommend you check out if this sounds like something that might interest you, plus you can just go on over to their site and try out the free demo videos .  Oh, and they do provide volume discounts for educators and organizations.

Quick note: I made separate sections down below for movies, children’s shows/cartoons, and documentaries but I should note right now that Yabla has all of those in addition to Spanish TV shows, I just didn’t want to be listing them under all 3 sections and make it seem like I was pushing them a little too hard.

2.   Netflix , Amazon Prime Video , and Hulu .  I’m grouping them all together because…well, they’re pretty much all the same thing (type of service), aren’t they?  Anymore, for me, Netflix, YouTube, and RTVE are where I’m getting all my Spanish-language content (and a bit on Instagram, too).  For lots of great YouTube content see my post about Spanish-speaking YouTubers who are great for intermediate Spanish practice (most offer Spanish subs), my whole category dedicated to learning Spanish on YouTube , as well as this list of YouTube channels that teach Spanish .

I’m not familiar with Hulu at all so I can’t comment (those who are, please  do comment, below, in the comments), but I have both Netflix and Amazon Prime and…Netflix wins handily.  It’s no-contest.  Amazon’s offerings in general are not as good as Netflix (I really only watch The Grand Tour there), nowhere near as good in fact, and this is doubly so in their foreign-language selection: go with Netflix.

Now, that said…what Netflix movies and series can I recommend here and now?  Several!

  • Narcos (and now, Narcos Mexico ) – it’s about the drug war, obviously.  The original series was set in Colombia during the 1980s and 1990s and dealt with Pablo Escobar, the Medellin Cartel, and then the Cali Cartel.  The new one about Mexico I couldn’t tell you about because I haven’t seen it.  Subtitles are available in both Spanish and English.  Spanish is mainly spoken but you get a repreive every now and then when the DEA agents are on-screen and they speak English.  The Spanish is, obviously, almost entirely Colombian, mostly Paisa dialect since it’s largely based in and around Medellin.  Wikipedia (Narcos) | Rotten Tomatoes (Narcos) | IMDB (Narcos) | MetaCritic (Narcos) . Wikipedia (Narcos Mexico) | Rotten Tomatoes (Narcos Mexico) | IMDB (Narcos Mexico) | MetaCritic (Narcos Mexico) .
  • La Casa de Papel – This is about a robbery of the Spanish mint.  I’ve only seen the first episode but it does look really good and is very highly recommended elsewhere.  The Spanish is Iberian (Spanish from Spain).  Wikipedia | Rotten Tomatoes  | IMDB | MetaCritic doesn’t have an entry for it.
  • El Club de Cuervos .  A Mexican comedy-drama web TV series. The story centers on the football club Cuervos FC, based in the fictional city of Nuevo Toledo, Mexico, and the power struggle that follows the death of its long-time owner and patriarch. Wikipedia | IMDB | Rotten Tomatoes .
  • El Tiempo Entre Costuras .  The story of a woman who became a spy against the Nazis and their allies in WWII.  Wikipedia | Rotten Tomatoes | IMDB .  It should be noted this series is based on a highly acclaimed book by the same title .
  • El Gran Hotel . Mystery Drama in a nice, old hotel.  Per Google: “ Set in Spain in the early 20th century, Julio arrives at a luxury hotel to meet his sister, head chambermaid Cristina only to discover she has disappeared. Julio makes it his mission to find her and infiltrates the hotel under the guise of a footman. ”  Wikipedia  | IMDB .

We really must move on.  I’ve many more but I think what I’ll do is make a separate post out of that list and then link it here later.  Stay tuned ( subscribe , please!).

3. RTVE . This  is Spain’s state-owned corporate television station, very similar to the BBC in the U.K. or PBS here in the U.S.  They’re the largest and most popular broadcaster in Spain, and they show a wide variety of news, documentaries, fictional dramas, reality shows, etc.  Since they’re state-funded, there’s no profit motive and therefore less motivation on their part to restrict who can watch their products, from where, and through which medium.  Consequently, their website,   RTVE.es,  offers a   lot   of material that’s all in Spanish and free to view by anybody, anywhere in the world.

It should be noted that not all of their videos can be viewed outside Spain, but many of them can.  It seems that, with the exception of news, the more recent a show is the more likely it is to not be available outside Spain.

If you’d like more information about them, including show recommendations, check out my post about RTVE here (and skip the first two paragraph, because you just read them).

4. TeleMundo has Spanish subtitles on some of their shows and videos that are available to watch for free via their website and on YouTube.  Here’s their YouTube channel: Telemundo en YouTube .  Currently, as best I can tell, just their telenovelas have Spanish subtitles on YouTube.  Additionally it appears that they’re currently only putting the first of five parts of each episode on YouTube, not the whole episode, which sucks I know but it’s better than nothing and the full episodes  are still available on their website. Thanks to Jennie for being the first to alert me to their YouTube channel.

If you want to use their website , the way you get to them is to simply choose a video and then, once it starts playing, click on the “CC” button on the bottom right and then select “Español” (Spanish).  An important note: I’ve found that you have to wait for the actual episode to start, the subtitles don’t work for advertisements.  I’m not sure how many of their videos they’ve done this for, it appears that all the recent episodes of all of their telenovelas have them (the older episodes don’t appear to), and some of their other shows as well (but not all, they haven’t done it for any of the sporting events).  The way you get to the videos is to just hover your mouse arrow over “Videos” in the blue toolbar at the top, then select a show or type of show from the drop-down menu that appears.  You can also go to the ‘shows’ section and browse around there.  Credit for the original find of the videos on their website goes to a reader who e-mailed me about it: thanks, Darcy!

5. Univision – Univision has now joined the party!  Yay!   They are now putting all of their telenovelas online, for free, and with both Spanish and English subtitles, though you do need to sign in with a participating cable provider (Cox, AT&T, Dish Network, and many others are on the list) to be able to view the full episodes.   Also it does just appear to be the telenovelas right now that have subtitles, not the rest of their shows (regrettably–I’m waiting for the day that Spanish news videos and other TV shows are available online with Spanish subtitles).

6. Destinos – Yes, Destinos !  How many of you remember this from your high school Spanish classes?  Haha!  This is such a fantastic series and just absolutely perfect for beginning to intermediate Spanish learners (which is precisely who it was designed for, what a coincidence).  What’s really cool is that the wonderful people who made it and own the copyright have decided to make it available online for free for everyone to watch, and they’ve finally gotten around to not only completely redesigning their website (it really used to be crap) but also adding Spanish subtitles.

What is it?  Well, I really recommend you just read the Wikipedia article on it , but in short: Destinos is a Spanish TV show consisting of a series of 52 episodes, each about half an hour long, that was specifically designed by Professor Bill Van Patten who was, at the time, Professor of Spanish and Second Language Acquisition at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, to help teach Spanish to beginning and intermediate learners.  The Spanish used in the series is very clearly spoken at a rate of speed that I would classify as being at the low end of normal for native speakers (that is, it’s slow, but not abnormally slow), which makes it very easy to understand even for beginning learners (and with the addition of the subtitles, nobody should have a problem quickly and easily determining what was said).  The story and acting are pretty good (regarding special effects and such: it was 1992 and this was a low-budget educational film, cut them some slack, eh? haha), and I really like that the whole story is spread across 4 different Spanish-speaking countries (they did this intentionally so you would be exposed to a variety of dialects and accents, very clever and an excellent educational technique in my opinion): Spain, Argentina, Puerto Rico, and Mexico.

To watch the entire series online just go to the Destinos homepage , select which series of episodes you’re on from the bottom, then select the specific episode once you’re on that series’ page.  To turn on the Spanish subtitles, wait until the video loads (I’ve found this can take a bit, like 10-30 seconds or so) and then just hover over “CC” in the bottom right hand corner of the video window and select “On- English” – yes, you will get Spanish subtitles.  I don’t know why they messed with this since I last checked but they did: selecting “On – English” doesn’t just get you English subtitles, it gets you subtitles in general, that is when Spanish is being spoken you’ll get word-for-word Spanish subtitles and when English is being spoken you’ll get word-for-word English subtitles.

7. BBC’s Mi Vida Loca – This is a fantastic little show put together by the BBC specifically intended for the sole purpose of teaching Spanish to complete beginners.  It’s filled with drama and action, it’s very interesting and entertaining, you learn a lot about Spanish culture, and it is absolutely not boring.  It’s not just Spanish videos with subtitles in Spanish, they’ve also got numerous tools and activities to help you learn Spanish in addition to offering Spanish and English subtitles for the whole thing (you can have both turned on at the same time! note the screenshots I took below), such as an interactive (human) phrasebook that pops in here and there to teach you important vocabulary and grammar rules that you’re about to see used, as well as quizzes and exercises you can do.  This is really a wonderful resource, especially if you’re a beginner, I can’t recommend it enough.

8. Extr@ (this is a YouTube channel that has all 13 episodes with subtitles in Spanish) – This is a TV show in Spanish specifically designed for Spanish learners, the actors speak slowly and clearly and use vocabulary that’s not too advanced.  I’d say it’s intended for beginner and intermediate adult learners, probably high school and college level, so it’s perfect for most of you.  A summary of the plot, from Wikipedia :

“Sam, with only a very basic grasp of the featured language, comes to stay with his penpal, Lola. Sam’s efforts to get to grips with the language provide the central dynamic for the series’ language learning content. The series is particularly suitable for adolescents and young adults who can relate to the contextual setting and implied meanings in the screenplay.”

I originally found out about this thanks to a reader, Robin, posting a link in the comments below to another YouTube channel that has all the episodes (albeit without subtitles) and then my friend and fellow language blogger, Jennie of ielanguages.com (who has recently started learning Spanish), decided to be awesome and popped in with the transcripts and another YouTube channel that had the videos with subtitles, which is the one I first linked to above.  Here are the transcripts and more (look to the menu on the left for them as well links to the same for other episodes in that series):

Music Videos

I can’t possibly list every single Spanish music video that includes the lyrics, but I will give you some examples and then show you how you can obtain the lyrics for nearly any other one that you want even if the video doesn’t include them.

Of course I have to throw in some Shakira videos…

Here’s  La Tortura with lyrics

And  Inevitable

Ciega, Sordomuda

Antes de las Seis

Te Aviso, Te Anuncio

And for the Juanes fans there are a ton, including…

A Dios Le Pido

Y Es por Ti

…and many more, just search YouTube for “Juanes letras” (“letras” is Spanish for “lyrics”, and you want to search in Spanish because of course you want the Spanish lyrics not an English translation which is what will frequently come up if you say “lyrics” instead of “letras”).

Where to find lyrics for nearly any song

Spanish Children’s Stories and Spanish Cartoons

1. BookBox – Fantastic little site, though they’ve only got 13 videos right now.  What they do is make an animated video based on a children’s story into a video and then read that story out loud during the video.  All videos have complete subtitles and are available in numerous languages.  Just look directly underneath the bottom right side of the video on the front page and you’ll see a menu where you can select whatever language you want.  When you select Spanish the horizontal menu below should change and say “View 13 Stories in Spanish”, then just select whichever story you’d like to listen to.  You can also get directly to these by going to their YouTube channel , and if you’d like the Spanish ones you can just go to their playlist of them here .

Spanish News with Spanish Subtitles (or transcripts)

1. EuroNews – Fantastic site, they provide videos in one of several available languages and then there are transcripts directly below each video.  My link goes to the Spanish version of the site, the main homepage is here where you can select from various languages using the menu at the very top left of the page, the default is English.

2. United Nations Multimedia Page for Spanish – Here you can find videos and radio broadcasts in Spanish , all of which have transcripts with them, plus the videos have subtitles in Spanish, just click the little “CC” button at the bottom of the video.  Their YouTube channel is here , they have about four pages worth of videos.  Not bad, not the most riveting stuff in the world, but it works and you’ll learn about some things going on in the world.

Educational Videos in Spanish (lectures and documentaries)

1. Spanish TED Videos (118 pages of them at the time of this writing) – First contribution by a reader, and only a day after I first posted this–excellent.  Thank you, Dally.  TED, as many of you know, records and publishes free educational lectures and talks online.  The talks are in many different languages, their search function allows you to search by language, and most of their videos have subtitles, however…I did a little investigating before posting this and found that some videos had English subtitles, some videos had good Spanish subtitles (such as this one ), some videos had crappy Spanish subtitles, and some videos had no subtitles at all.  So, you’ve been warned, you’re going to have to do some sifting.

Random Spanish Video Collections

Here is where there’s more sheer quantity than anything else.  Three of the sites I’ve found so far do something very similar: they just take random videos from wherever (usually YouTube) and then the users do subtitles for them for free.  Fantastic sites, they’re adding new videos all the time, and, of course, the biggest benefit is that they’re completely free.  The other two sites are run by educational institutes.  You will, with all of them however, have to sift through them and pick out what you want to watch (I, for one, am really not that picky since the primary purpose is for me to learn Spanish, so as long as it’s at least mildly interesting, I’m happy).

1. Amara aka  UniversalSubtitles.org – Wow.  I just found this one the other day, they currently list 4,626 videos in Spanish with Spanish subtitles (note that you can search and sort by language of the speakers and subtitle language using the search bar on the videos homepage , just pull the menu down and select your languages).  Again, these are just videos that people have found on YouTube and decided to do the subtitles for.  Note that you can sign up for an account and help subtitle videos of any language you speak.

2. Edustation.me’s Video Section – You’ll need to sign up for a free account to use this one, I believe.  Once you’ve done that, look at the menu at the top right and select the language that you’re learning where it says “Idioma para aprender”, then go to the homepage and click “Peliculas” on the bottom left hand side of the screen (between “Artículos” and “Fotos”).  They have a ton of videos there with subtitles, but again these are just YouTube videos that Spanish-speaking users have selected and elected to write up some subtitles for, the community does all the work (again, just like with Amara you, too, can sign up and help out by doing some subtitles in whatever languages you speak).

3. Rhinospike Spanish Transcriptions – Again, these are just a bunch of random videos and audio files that the users have decided to do transcripts for.  There appear to be about 70 transcriptions total.

4. Catálogo de voces hispánicas  by the Cervantes Institute – This is really cool in my opinion, this is a collection of videos of native speakers from all over the Spanish-speaking world speaking their dialect of Spanish, so you can hear and compare how people speak in Buenos Aires, Argentina; Guadalajara, Mexico; Bogotá, Colombia; and Barcelona, Spain; etc.  Each video sample includes a transcript, a list of linguistic characteristics of this particular type of Spanish, and some information about the location.

5. Spanish Proficiency Exercises from the University of Texas at Austin – As best I can tell this is part of their Spanish program.  They have a lot of these videos, all of which have transcripts.  From the website: “A complete index of video interviews and podcasts, as well as related grammar, vocabulary, and phrases contained in this site is listed below.  A topical grammar index and podcast help are also available.”  Each video not only has a transcript, but it also has an accompanying explanation of all the grammar and vocabulary used as well as an associated podcast of it.  This is essentially an entire Spanish course based on videos of native speakers speaking…which is actually pretty good, to be honest, and it’s free–you can’t argue with free.

6. YouTube Subtitler – Subtitles in Spanish – This is one sent to me by a language exchange partner in Colombia–thanks, Diana!  It’s the same thing as the first few, a community of people who subtitle YouTube videos for free in their spare time, basically just helping each other out by subtitling videos in their native language so that people who speak other languages will do the same for videos in their native language.  They have 20 videos per page and 500 pages of Spanish videos as of right now, so that means that they currently have right around 10,000 Spanish-language videos with Spanish subtitles.  This is probably one of the largest, if not the largest, of these sorts of sites that I’ve found yet.

Related Resources

An excellent course that would probably interest you if you’re just getting started in Spanish and want to focus on learning how to speak it with perfect pronunciation, that relies on immitating native speakers in the sort of media that’s on this list, is called  The Mimic Method , specifically their “39 Elemental Sounds of Spanish” .  Check it out, try it, let me know if you like it.

Lastly, it just so happens that I wrote a book about precisely how to learn Spanish from the kind of popular media above!  It’s called  The Telenovela Method and is available on Amazon , Apple iBooks , Barnes & Noble , Kobo , Scribd , and Goodreads (also, your local bookstore  should be able to order a copy if you like).  The e-book version is about $7.99 and the paperback is about $14.99 (varies a bit by retailer).  It’s about how to use popular media of your choice (movies, TV shows, music, books, news, etc.) to learn Spanish on your own.  It’s centered almost entirely around online resources, the overwhelming majority of which are free (those that aren’t are very inexpensive and not necessary).  I called it  The Telenovela Method because the popular media I initially used to learn most of my Spanish about nine years ago was telenovelas (that’s what soap operas are called in Spanish) because they were just about the only thing I could find that, occasionally at least, included subtitles in Spanish.  You don’t need to use telenovelas, no, pick what appeals to you.

Ok, that’s all I’ve got for now.  Please, if you know of any others, leave them in the comments and I’ll add them and give you credit, or if you notice that a link no longer works, please say so in the comments and I’ll fix it straight away.  Any comments left are e-mailed to me and I’ll see them very shortly, believe me I read all of them and respond to most of them, also…   If you thought the above was at all useful and you want to learn (or are learning) Spanish,  please give me a chance and read what I have to say about my book below!   Thank you so much for checking out my blog and I hope you’ve enjoyed my writing.

27 Best Spanish Movies on Netflix (2023)

spanish movie websites with english subtitles

Watching Spanish-language movies on Netflix is a great way to practice vocabulary and listening skills. Spanish films also allow you to learn about other cultures and gain exposure to different accents and slang.

Here are some of the best Spanish movies   on Netflix in the US as of January 2, 2023. If you’re not in the US, click the title to check if the film is available in your country. If it’s not available, it’ll display an error or redirect to Netflix’s homepage.

Netflix originals should stick around, but watch the rest while you can, because content disappears as licensing agreements expire.

If you are an intermediate or advanced learner, I recommend watching with Spanish subtitles as studies show it enhances language learning . I also jot down any interesting new vocabulary to add to my Anki flashcards later.

To amp up your Spanish learning, try Google Chrome browser’s free Language Reactor (LR) extension. It allows you to add subtitles in two languages, listen to dialogue one line at a time, and change playback speed. There’s also a pop-up dictionary, and LR suggests the most important words for you to learn.

There are so many great Mexican movies on Netflix that I created a separate list for them. Also, don’t miss my recommendations for  Spanish TV shows on Netflix .

If you’re an Amazon Prime member, be sure to check out my lists of top Spanish movies   and Spanish-language TV shows on Amazon Prime Video.

Suggested reconsideration of your terms:

Peninsular Spanish Continental Spanish (Latin America)

HOWEVER, there is not one form of Castilian spoken in Spain but multiple, with a diversity of slang terms, accents, cadences, deliveries, etc. ….now multiply that by 100++ across the many regions of the Spanish speaking Americas (including migrant to 3rd generation mixed speakers in “anglo” America).

Just thinking of the country with the largest amount of Spanish speakers in the world, Mexico and its diaspora, one would have many differences across regions, education levels, vocational jargons, ancestries and socio-economic strata. Just like English.

Thanks for your comment. I know the term peninsular Spanish is often used in Spain; I’ve been using European Spanish instead, as I thought it would be less confusing for my mostly North American audience.

And agree with you on the mind-boggling diversity of dialects… I’ve mainly focused on Mexican and European Spanish and keeping the vocabulary and grammar differences straight is a real challenge at times!

December 29, 2020 at 6:14 pm

Thanks for being so open, while I am replying months later. Hey there is so much programming available in both Peninsular, Continental and combined Spanish across streamers, i.e. HBO Max, Netflix, Hulu, Pantaya, A3Media, etc.

Thanks for these lists! I appreciate Netflix’s variety of audio and caption languages and wish Amazon offered as many choices. I get a lot out of watching shows in another language dubbed AND captioned in Spanish, such as “Tabula Rasa” and “42.” They must use different translators for audio and captions so I get to see synonyms: sometimes I know one and then can learn the other on the fly. It’s also interesting to see one translator use the second person form when the other chooses the more formal third person in dialog. I don’t feel so bad being confused about when to use which when separate professional translators make different choices

November 9, 2019 at 11:51 am

Thanks, Dave, that’s a good tip for learners to watch their favorite shows dubbed into Spanish. And interesting idea to compare and contrast the audio and caption translations!

I always look forward to the updates on your blog as I’m trying to learn Spanish using the Netflix method (plus traveling, community college course, and online Fluencia). One new Netflix show that I really am enjoying is Hache. It uses European Spanish and is a really well done production… very suspenseful.

Bravo Ingrid, formidable esfuerzo! I applaud your pastimes and thank you for these excellent recommendations. I’ve seen some and know those are real gems. Released: 2019 Director: Patricia Font Genre: Romantic Comedy

“In Family I Trust” follows Bea, an architect. She comes back to her family home in a small Spanish town after being cheated on by her boyfriend and fired from her job. It’s a light movie centered on family love and full of the little twists and turns that make romantic comedies.

The Spanish title is a wordplay. Aloud, it sounds like gente que viene y va (“people who come and go”). But va was replaced with bah because they sound alike. Bah is an interjection that means scorn or disdain.

It’s the perfect Netflix choice if you want something light to work on your:

  • Knowledge of modern, everyday Spanish culture
  • Understanding of spoken Castilian Spanish
  • Vocabulary, including idioms (and some swear words)

Side note: Gente que viene y bah is based on the Spanish novel with the same name by Laura Norton.

Palmeras en la nieve is a good Netflix choice if you want to:

  • Learn about a part of the history of Equatorial Guinea. Many tend to forget that Spanish is one of the official languages in Equatorial Guinea and that the country was colonized by Spain.
  • Pick up some dialogue in Aragonese, a dialect from the Aragon and Huesca regions of Spain.
  • Work on your comprehension of regular Castillian.

Palmeras en la Nieve is based on the novel with the same name .

Ocho apellidos catalanes is a great Netflix choice if you want to focus on:

  • Spanish humour, including the stereotypes associated with certain regions.
  • Some Catalan and Basque.
  • Learning about the cultural differences in Spain, even if the movie exaggerates them.

6 Mexican and Other Hispanic Movies on Netflix

Spain isn’t the only country to produce movies you could watch to improve your Spanish.

In fact, if you want to learn the dialect of a Hispanic region that is not Spain, it’s more helpful to check out what movies were produced in that region.

Obviously, I wouldn’t tell you all this and then run away without helping you get started.

You might have already watched some Latin American [ telenovelas ]( https://www.fluentin3months.com/telenovelas/): they’re a popular feature of Latin American television. A little warning before you add this one to your list: it’s not exactly a story with a lot of depth or a good example. It has been criticised a lot for its plot and the behaviour of its characters.

Even though it’s not a cinematic masterpiece, it is a good Netflix choice if you want to:

As you’re reading this article, I assume you already have a reason for why you want to watch Spanish movies on Netflix. But in case you don’t yet, let me tell you why watching Spanish movies is an excellent thing to do if you’re learning Spanish.

You might want to watch the original versions in Spanish to improve your comprehension. Hearing dialogues will help you get used to the accent.

You can watch the movies with English subtitles to learn new vocabulary. You can also watch them in English with Spanish subtitles.

Or if you need a break from intensive language learning, you can watch them in your mother tongue and learn about the culture or history.

Plus, watching foreign movies shows you the world from another perspective. Movie-making techniques aren’t the same in the United States as in Spain. The focus, character arcs, type of humour changes from country to country, sometimes even region to region.

In any case, you never lose.

Here’s a bit of advice to get you started. Now that you’ve had a look at all the movies in this post, select the ones that look the best fit for what you want to learn in Spanish.

Now separate them into categories and:

  • Watch the ones that seem most interesting in Spanish. It will be easier to make the effort to understand if the story interests you.
  • Watch the ones that focus heavily on culture in your native tongue or with subtitles.

Of course, this is based on my personal experience. You might prefer to watch all movies first in your native tongue and then re-watch them in Spanish. Or you’d rather use subtitles for all of them.

For an in-depth guide, check out our tips on learning a language by watching movies here .

You do you!

A side note before I let you go: As you’ve noticed throughout the article, I’ve let you know when a movie is based on a book.

I’ve recently written about how reading in Spanish can help you achieve fluency. If you want to make the most of the movie in terms of learning, you should think about reading the book as well.

First of all, you would get more insight into Spanish culture. There is simply more space in a book to talk about the setting of a story and the habits of characters.

But more importantly, you would have the chance to read the vocabulary from the movie. It’s a very valuable aspect if you rely on written text to learn. You could take notes easily or make flashcards, for example.

This is one of the techniques I use to maintain fluency in the four languages I know, so I can say with confidence that it’s worth the effort!

¡Lo tienes todo listo para ver Netflix en Español! (“You’re ready to watch Netflix in Spanish!”)

After all this reading, I bet you can’t wait to jump on the couch and turn the TV on. And that’s an excellent idea! In fact, I’m on my way to catch up with this list of Korean Movies .

¡Nos vemos!

By watching Spanish TV with English subtitles, you can enjoy the content while improving your language skills.

Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced learner, watching Spanish TV shows with English subtitles can be a valuable tool for language acquisition. Not only does it help you comprehend the audio, but it also enhances your vocabulary, grammar, and listening skills.

In this article, we’ll explore various methods to watch Spanish TV with English subtitles, so you can find the option that suits you best. From streaming platforms to subtitles downloaded from the internet, we’ll cover the different ways you can access Spanish content with English translations.

But why should you bother watching Spanish TV with English subtitles instead of just sticking to solely English-language TV shows? The answer is simple – it’s a more effective and immersive way to learn the language. When you watch shows in Spanish with English subtitles, you can connect the dots between the spoken and written word. This helps you grasp the meanings of words, phrases, and slang terms in context, allowing for a deeper understanding of the Spanish language.

By combining visual and auditory input with English subtitles, you engage different parts of your brain, making the learning process more holistic and enjoyable. With time and practice, you’ll notice a significant improvement in your Spanish comprehension skills.

Now, let’s explore the various methods you can use to watch Spanish TV with English subtitles.

Why Watch Spanish TV with English Subtitles?

Watching Spanish TV shows with English subtitles offers numerous benefits that can greatly enhance your language learning journey. Here are a few compelling reasons why you should consider incorporating English subtitles when watching Spanish content:

  • Improved Comprehension: Spanish TV shows can be fast-paced, and it’s easy to miss certain words or phrases. English subtitles provide a safety net, ensuring you catch every detail and comprehend the dialogue accurately. This allows you to follow the plot and fully understand the context of the show.
  • Vocabulary Expansion: English subtitles expose you to new Spanish words along with their corresponding translations. This helps expand your vocabulary by building associations between English and Spanish terms. Over time, you’ll start recognizing common words and phrases, and gradually incorporate them into your own language usage.
  • Grammar Insights: Subtitles can provide valuable insights into Spanish grammar. By observing sentence structures and word order in both Spanish and English, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of how the language functions. It helps you grasp grammatical concepts such as verb conjugations, articles, prepositions, and more.
  • Listening Practice: Watching Spanish TV with English subtitles allows you to train your listening skills. You get to familiarize yourself with different accents, intonations, and speech patterns. Over time, your ears become attuned to the sounds of the language, making it easier to understand native Spanish speakers.
  • Cultural Exposure: Spanish TV shows provide a window into the vibrant Hispanic culture. By watching these shows with English subtitles, you not only learn the language but also gain insights into the customs, traditions, and everyday life of Spanish-speaking countries. It’s a rich cultural experience that deepens your connection to the language.

These are just a few of the many reasons why watching Spanish TV with English subtitles can be immensely beneficial. It combines entertainment with education, allowing you to learn at your own pace and in a way that suits your individual learning style.

Now that we understand the advantages of using English subtitles, let’s delve into the different methods you can utilize to watch Spanish TV shows with these subtitles.

Method 1: Using Streaming Platforms

One of the easiest and most convenient ways to watch Spanish TV shows with English subtitles is by using streaming platforms. Platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, and Disney+ offer a wide range of Spanish content that you can enjoy with the added benefit of English subtitles. Here’s how you can make the most of these platforms:

  • Search for Spanish Content: Use the search function on the streaming platform to look for Spanish TV shows or movies. You can type in keywords like “Spanish”, “Spanish-language”, or the names of specific shows you’re interested in.
  • Check for Subtitle Options: Once you’ve found a Spanish show or movie, look for the subtitle options. Most streaming platforms provide multiple language options for subtitles, including English. Make sure to select the English subtitle option.
  • Adjust Subtitle Settings: Depending on the platform, you may have the ability to customize the subtitle settings. You can adjust the font size, color, and background to ensure optimal readability.
  • Enjoy the Show: Sit back, relax, and enjoy watching the Spanish content with English subtitles. As the show progresses, you’ll find yourself improving your listening skills, expanding your vocabulary, and gaining a better understanding of the Spanish language.

Streaming platforms offer a vast selection of Spanish TV shows and movies, ranging from dramas and comedies to documentaries and thrillers. Some popular Spanish shows that you can watch with English subtitles include “La Casa de Papel” (Money Heist), “Elite”, “Narcos”, and “Gran Hotel”. These shows not only entertain but also provide valuable learning experiences.

Additionally, streaming platforms often have original Spanish content, including shows produced specifically for that platform. This gives you access to fresh and exciting Spanish content that may not be available elsewhere.

Now that you know how to use streaming platforms to watch Spanish TV shows with English subtitles, let’s explore another method that involves downloading subtitles from the internet.

Method 2: Using Subtitles Downloaded from the Internet

If you can’t find Spanish TV shows with English subtitles on streaming platforms, or if you’re looking for more specific content, you can turn to subtitles downloaded from the internet. This method allows you to add subtitles to Spanish videos or TV shows that may not come with built-in English subtitles. Here’s how you can use subtitles downloaded from the internet:

  • Search for Subtitle Websites: Look for websites that offer subtitles for various TV shows and movies. Popular subtitle websites include OpenSubtitles, Subscene, and Addic7ed. These websites have a vast collection of subtitles in multiple languages.
  • Find the Desired Subtitles: Use the search function on the subtitle website to find subtitles for the Spanish TV show or movie you want to watch. Specify the language (Spanish) and the desired subtitle language (English).
  • Download the Subtitles: Once you’ve found the appropriate subtitles, download them to your device. Subtitles are often available in .srt or .sub file formats, which are compatible with most media players.
  • Play the Video with Subtitles: Open your preferred media player and play the Spanish TV show or movie. Then, load the downloaded subtitles file into the media player. The subtitles should sync with the video, displaying English translations of the Spanish dialogue.

This method provides flexibility, as you can find subtitles for a wide range of Spanish content from different sources. It’s particularly useful if you have specific shows or movies in mind that may not be available on streaming platforms.

Remember to ensure that the downloaded subtitles are synchronized correctly with the video. If there are any timing issues, you can adjust the subtitle timing using media player settings or specialized subtitle editing software.

Downloading subtitles from the internet allows you to watch Spanish TV shows with English subtitles regardless of the source or availability of official translations. However, it’s important to note that the quality and accuracy of subtitles may vary, as they are often created and uploaded by users. Hence, it’s always a good idea to double-check and verify the accuracy of the subtitles before relying on them for language learning purposes.

Now that you’re familiar with this method, let’s move on to another option: using a Spanish TV channel’s official website.

Method 3: Using a Spanish TV Channel’s Official Website

If you prefer to watch Spanish TV shows directly from the source, you can utilize a Spanish TV channel’s official website to access their content with English subtitles. Many Spanish TV channels provide online platforms where you can stream their shows and movies, often with the option to enable English subtitles. Here’s how you can use a Spanish TV channel’s official website to watch Spanish TV with English subtitles:

  • Select the Desired TV Channel: Identify the Spanish TV channel you want to watch. Some popular Spanish TV channels include RTVE (Radiotelevisión Española), Antena 3, Telecinco, and Cuatro.
  • Visit the Channel’s Official Website: Go to the official website of the TV channel. Look for a section dedicated to their online streaming platform, often labeled as “TV en Vivo” or “Directo”.
  • Explore the Content: Browse through the available shows and movies on the website. Look for the ones that interest you and check if English subtitles are provided.
  • Enable English Subtitles: Once you’ve selected the show you want to watch, check if there is an option to enable English subtitles. Usually, there will be a button or settings menu where you can adjust the subtitle preferences.
  • Enjoy the Show: Sit back and enjoy watching the Spanish TV show or movie with English subtitles. Immerse yourself in authentic Spanish content while improving your language skills.

Using a Spanish TV channel’s official website is an excellent way to access high-quality Spanish content and ensure accurate English subtitles. This method provides a direct connection to the source, allowing you to explore a wide range of shows and movies unique to that particular TV channel.

Keep in mind that accessing some Spanish TV channels’ official websites may require creating a free user account or subscription. Check the website’s requirements and registration process to ensure a smooth viewing experience.

Exploring Spanish TV shows through a Spanish TV channel’s official website not only enhances your language learning but also introduces you to popular Spanish TV programming and cultural references. It’s a fantastic way to stay up to date with the latest Spanish television trends and enjoy content directly from the creators.

Now that you’re familiar with this method, let’s move on to another option: using a VPN to access Spanish TV with English subtitles.

Method 4: Using a VPN to Access Spanish TV with English Subtitles

If you’re unable to access Spanish TV shows and movies with English subtitles due to geographical restrictions, using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) can help you bypass these limitations. A VPN allows you to change your virtual location and connect to servers in different countries, including Spain. Here’s how you can use a VPN to access Spanish TV with English subtitles:

  • Choose a Reliable VPN Provider: Select a reputable VPN provider that offers servers in Spain. Popular VPNs include NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and CyberGhost.
  • Install and Set up the VPN: Follow the instructions provided by the VPN provider to download and install their application on your device. Once installed, open the VPN application and sign in or create a new account if necessary.
  • Select a Server in Spain: After logging into the VPN application, choose a server located in Spain from the available server locations. This will assign you a Spanish IP address, making it appear as if you’re accessing the internet from within Spain.
  • Access Spanish TV Channels: With the VPN connected to a Spanish server, visit the official websites or streaming platforms of Spanish TV channels. Explore the shows and movies offered and check if English subtitles are available.
  • Enjoy Spanish TV with English Subtitles: Once you’ve found a show with English subtitles, start streaming and enjoy watching Spanish TV with the added benefit of English translations.

A VPN not only allows you to access Spanish TV shows that might be restricted in your region, but it also ensures that you can enjoy them with English subtitles. It opens up a world of Spanish content that would otherwise be inaccessible, providing a valuable resource for language learning and cultural immersion.

Additionally, using a VPN offers privacy and security while browsing online, encrypting your internet connection and protecting your personal information. However, it’s important to choose a reputable VPN provider and follow their guidelines to ensure a safe and reliable connection.

Now that you know how to use a VPN to access Spanish TV with English subtitles, let’s explore another method: using a language learning website or app.

Method 5: Using a Language Learning Website or App

Language learning websites and apps offer a unique way to watch Spanish TV shows with English subtitles while actively engaging in the learning process. These platforms are designed specifically for language learners, providing interactive tools and resources to enhance your comprehension and vocabulary. Here’s how you can use a language learning website or app to watch Spanish TV with English subtitles:

  • Choose a Language Learning Platform: Select a language learning website or app that offers Spanish courses and resources. Some popular options include Duolingo, Babbel, FluentU, and Rosetta Stone.
  • Find Spanish TV Content: Explore the platform for Spanish TV shows or movies with English subtitles. These platforms often curate their own content or collaborate with streaming platforms to offer language learning material.
  • Watch and Learn: Start watching the Spanish TV show or movie on the language learning platform. As you watch, utilize the interactive tools provided by the platform to learn new words, practice pronunciation, and reinforce your understanding of the dialogue.
  • Pause and Review: Take advantage of the built-in features of the language learning platform to pause the video and review specific scenes or sections. You can replay parts that are challenging or use the platform’s exercises to reinforce your comprehension.
  • Track Your Progress: Many language learning websites and apps offer progress tracking features to monitor your learning journey. Utilize these features to keep track of the shows or movies you’ve watched, words you’ve learned, and areas for improvement.

Language learning websites and apps provide an immersive and interactive approach to learning Spanish through TV shows and movies. They combine the benefits of watching content with English subtitles with built-in language learning tools, creating a comprehensive learning experience.

These platforms often offer a range of difficulty levels, allowing you to progress from beginner to advanced content as your language skills improve. Some platforms even provide personalized recommendations based on your proficiency level and learning preferences.

While using a language learning website or app to watch Spanish TV with English subtitles, you have the added advantage of accessing additional language resources, such as grammar explanations, vocabulary lists, and interactive exercises. This integration of content and learning tools makes language learning enjoyable and effective.

Now that you’re familiar with the method of using a language learning website or app, it’s time to summarize the different approaches discussed in this article.

Watching Spanish TV shows with English subtitles can be a fantastic way to learn the language while immersing yourself in authentic content. Tubi - Watch Movies with Subtitles

Tubi is a legit site to stream movies with SDH English subtitles. Yet, just as its scarce movie resources, the movies that are subtitled are few. You can only watch the most popular movies with subtitles.

On the bright side, Tubi is the last site that would make you worry about site safety issues.

FMovies - Watch Movies with English Subtitles

FMovies is an amazing site to stream movies with subtitles without registration or any payment required. All content, including foreign movies and old TV series, are multi-lingual subbed on this site. You can choose any language you want. They are all SDH subtitles. Yet, for some really old titles, there may be no English subtitles available but rather subtitles in other languages, such as Spanish and Russian.

FMovies is also a place where you are most likely to find any movie you desire, for it has presumably the biggest library of movies and series spanning a hundred years and across genres and countries. And the high level of curation makes exploration on this site a delight.

MoviesJoy - Watch Movies Online with Subtitles

MoviesJoy is one of the best streaming sites with subtitles that you should check out. Reasons are as follows:

It has got almost all the movies and TV series prepared with well-synced English subtitles, even for the weirdest ones. For more popular titles, there are multiple languages to choose from. Moreover, most contents are available with SDH subtitles, which is helpful to people with hearing loss. Another benefit is that it has an extensive content library which you are more likely to find your wanted movie with subtitles right here at MoviesJoy. The last thing is that it requires no signup or subscription, and it has no ads. So you can rest assured to watch movies with subtitles without any worries.

MoviehdKH - Watch Movies with Subtitles

When it comes to finding movies with good-quality English subtitles, MoviehdKH seldom lets people down.

It has a decent movie library covering all the latest blockbusters and the lost gems. And all of these titles are carefully synced with English closed captions. MoviehdKH also allows you to change the subtitle appearance according to your preference.

No signup, no subscription, and no ads. MoviehdKH is a worthy site that should be on your go-to list to watch movies with English subtitles.

FlixTor - Watch Movies with English Subtitles

FlixTor has a good reputation for streaming online movies with subtitles. You can see from the fact that all the movies and TV series on FlixTor have at least SDH English subtitles. And for many popular movies, it has multi-lingual subtitles. These subtitles are well-synced and of good quality. Yet one thing that merits your attention is that movies released older than six months and TV episodes released older than three months are available to VIP users only. Hence the resource is limited for regular users. You are much reassured, however, if all you want is to keep up with the newly released movies with subtitles.

FlixTor has absolutely no ads and is safe to use as well.

WatchSoMuch - Watch Movies Online with Subtitles

WatchSoMuch is another fantastic ad-free place to watch free movies online with subtitles. Oh no, not just movies, but also TV series, programs, and documentaries.

Unlike many other free movie websites with subtitles, besides offering you subtitles in multiple languages (English included, of course), WatchSoMuch gives the users more flexibility to adjust the subtitles since it provides the options to upload subtitles, sync subtitles, and change subtitles style, which adds a lot more fun to the watching experience.

WatchSoMuch has its restrictions, though. It is inconvenient to watch one movie after another for sometimes there will be a three-minute time break in between. And you also can’t watch the 1080P video without becoming a VIP member. But to be honest, HD quality is well enough for the common users.

SolarMovie - Watch Movies with English Subtitles

SolarMovie is another reliable website to watch movies with subtitles. And it has a vast library of movies and TV shows, from brand new titles to everlasting classics. That said, only the most known movies and TV shows are closed captioned with SDH English subtitles. If you want to watch some lesser-known or foreign films, you might not be so lucky to find them with subtitles at all.

SolarMovie also has ads on its site, but it won’t interfere with your video playing as you can always use an ad-blocker to block these ads. No registration or subscription is required for using this site.

VIKV.net - Watch Movies with Subtitles

VIKV.net is a good site to watch free movies with subtitles. It is also a pleasant site to discover movies for all moods. Once you decided on a movie to watch, you’ll be delighted to see that it is carefully closed-captioned in English. You can turn the caption on and off in the three-dot menu at the bottom-right corner of the video player.

English subtitle is not the only option. Multi-lingual subtitles are accessible to cater different language viewers. You can click on the preferred language to change the subtitles. Similar to other streaming sites with subtitles, multi-lingual subtitles are only available for most famous movies.

TinyZone - Watch Movies with English Subtitles

TinyZone is a MoviesJoy alternative. It has the same database as MoviesJoy, and basically all the movies and TV series have English and Spanish subtitles, many of which have even multiple languages to choose from. What differs from MoviesJoy is that TinyZone adapts a YouTube-themed interface. If you are a YouTube addict, you might easily get into the swing of this site.

TinyZone asks for no signup and no subscription as well. And it is one hundred percent safe to use, just make sure you have an ad-blocker functioning well.

AFDAH - Watch Movies with Subtitles

AFDAH is more than an excellent free movie streaming site. It is also an ideal place to watch movies online with subtitles. Most movies on AFDAH have English subtitles available, even the hot new movies fresh out of the oven. However, for the rare old titles, chances are that there won’t be subtitles at all.

AFDAH asks for no signup and no money. In return, it shows ads on its site, and you have to disable the ad-blocker before accessing the content.

Los Movies - Watch Movies with English Subtitles

Still haven’t find the best streaming sites with subtitles? Then give Los Movies a chance to convince you.

Los Movies is one of the few sites that has curated a special section for movies with subtitles. You can effortlessly find English subbed movies and TV series as well as other languages subbed content. What’s more, for mainstream pop movies, Los Movies has prepared them with multiple subtitles.

When you play a video on Los Movies, you might notice that under the video player have listed all the servers in detailed information, including the availability of subtitles, audio quality, and video quality. However, the information may not be so accurate and is only for reference.

Movieforfree - Watch Movies Online with Subtitles

Movieforfree makes another great site to watch movies with English subtitles. Most movies on Movieforfree have the default SDH English subtitles. However, if you are not satisfied with the subtitles, you are allowed to upload subtitles yourself, search subtitles online, and change subtitle fonts as you wish.

Movieforfree maintains the site by promoting the ads. So don’t forget to use an ad-blocker when you want to watch movies on this site.

EMovies - Stream Movies with Subtitles

As one of the leading movie streaming sites, EMovies certainly lives up to its reputation.

In addition to bringing the best movies and TV shows to its users, EMovies also cares for the detail – adding English subtitles to most popular movies, including some foreign films. Some of the trending TV shows are available with English subtitles. You can watch them all for free and without any registration limit on EMovies.

C1NE - Free Movies with Subtitles

You can also watch movies and TV series with English subtitles with no strings attached on C1NE, another free movie streaming site with subtitles.

But not all of them are subbed. C1NE mainly provides subtitles for movies and shows released in recent years. If you want to enjoy older titles with English subtitles, C1NE might disappoint you.

One more thing that needs to be noticed is that you have to select Player 1 if you want to watch movies on C1NE.

Ask4Movie - Watch Movies with Subtitles

Ask4Movie is a Netflix-like website but without the paywall stuff and the geo-restriction. It is open to anyone who wants to watch movies online with subtitles.

All the content on Ask4Movie is available with high-quality subtitles. For movies, it has multiple language subtitles available. For series, it also has English subtitles for each. We also see that Ask4Movie offers content of the best quality that no other sites on the list can compete with. If you are into recent years’ blockbusters, award-winning films, and the eternal classics, Ask4Movie may be your best answer.

You don’t have to register or pay anything to use this site. But considering using an ad-blocker because there will be distracting ads.

We will constantly delete obsolete information and add good new sites to the list, so be sure to bookmark this page and come back often for timely updates!

That’s all for the fifteen websites to watch movies with subtitles. Hope you’ll like it. Thanks for reading!

Netflix has a rotating catalog, so the availability of titles at different times and in various regions of the world can vary. If you cannot find a title on Netflix, check Amazon . If it is not available on Amazon, either, you can try a local store or eBay. If all else fails, there are other movies out there! We have included plenty of options for you to pick from.

35. “ Finding Dory”

Where to get it: Amazon has a DVD with the Spanish dubbed version.

If you want to binge on more Spanish dubbed movies, consider these three websites as your go-to:

Amazon offers a terrific selection of dubbed movies if you know where to look for them. Luckily, it’s not hard.

All you have to do is look at the page for any DVD you might be interested in. Scroll down to “Product Details.” In this section, look for the heading “Dubbed.” If Spanish is listed, then the DVD comes with Spanish dubbing, which you can access by adjusting the language settings once the DVD is in your player. While not all DVDs have this feature, many do.

Netflix is great for binging on entertainment, learning or both. You can easily turn your Netflix binge into a Spanish-learning binge by using subtitles , but what’s less well-known is you can also use dubbing.

Finder.com provides a helpful list of Netflix options available with Spanish audio and/or subtitles to help guide you on your way. While many items on the list are not available for streaming and it’s unclear whether the website refers to DVD rentals or streaming, it’s a good jumping-off point for finding options.

Children’s movies have Spanish audio far more often than other movies, so these are a good option to target if you want to stream Spanish-dubbed movies via Netflix.

Once you’ve found the film you want to watch, you can change the language settings by going to the “Options” panel and selecting “Audio & Subtitles.” Select your language choice, press back to return to the options panel and then press play.

YouTube is usually best for clips of movies and movie trailers. Full-length movies often appear but are generally removed quickly due to copyright issues. Still, if you look every now and then, you’ll generally stumble upon some full-length movies. To find them, it helps to search for the name of the movie and “Spanish.” Otherwise, if you can find the Spanish title of the film, try typing it into the search bar.

If you are anything like me, then it can be hard to make time to study Spanish at the end of a long day. Most days, the only thing I want to do after work is to just lay on the couch and watch TV.

Although I find my lack of motivation embarrassing sometimes, I know that I am not alone. Watching Spanish dubbed movies is a good option to improve your language skills in a fun way that avoids the tedium of sitting down to run through verb conjugation drills.

But you will learn very little if you only watch: You need to be an active watcher to get the most out of your Spanish movie learning.

Here are some tips for boosting the learning power of Spanish dubbed movies:

If you’re familiar with the movie, you’ll have a better idea of what is happening. This will take some of the pressure off and allow you to focus more fully on the language.

Alternatively, you can also watch the movie in English before you try to watch it in Spanish!

“How will this help me learn Spanish?” you might ask. Well, consider this the groundwork to learning. If you’ve already watched the movie in English first, you’ll know what happens. You’ll know what each character is like. You’ll know what each scene is about. This familiarity with the movie will make it easy for you to follow the movie even once it’s in Spanish.

Choose the right level of dialogue for your goals. Obviously, more dialogue means more exposure to the language. However, if you’re a beginning Spanish learner just hoping to hear the language a little more, something action-packed might be less overwhelming.

The genre of the movie matters too. If you want to learn common phrases, try a romantic comedy. If you want to learn legal terms , a legal drama will help you out. If you’re looking to learn police terms, try a police procedural. There’s a movie for every vocabulary need!

Finally, pick something a movie you’d actually like. If you do not want to watch the movie in English, then it is unlikely you will want to try it in Spanish either.

Some DVDs offer subtitling in addition to dubbing. This is a helpful way to get the most out of the movie.

  • Watch the movie in English while reading Spanish subtitles. This is a helpful way to practice your Spanish reading skills.
  • Watch the movie in Spanish with English subtitles. If you can’t quite understand a word or phrase, you can glance down for a quick translation. Just keep in mind that the translation might not be literal.
  • Watch the movie in Spanish with Spanish subtitles. This will help you practice your reading and listening simultaneously. It’s also great for making sense of the words being pronounced by speakers.

If you enjoy learning Spanish from movie subtitles, you might like learning Spanish with FluentU . You’ll find video clips from Spanish movies, TV shows and more, complete with interactive subtitles, transcripts, personalized vocabulary quizzes and more.

As with any activity, putting in a little more work can lead to faster results.

  • Write down words and phrases. If you want quick results from watching dubbed movies, you might want to jot down some notes on key words or phrases you don’t fully understand while watching. You can also make note of words that you’ve heard before and understand but really want to reinforce until they’re committed to your long-term memory.
  • Look up words and phrases afterwards. Keep track of unknown language, but don’t interrupt your movie viewing experience to look everything up right away. This kind of active listening will ensure that you understand the precise meaning of the vocabulary.

Once you’ve learned a scene, try saying the lines along with the movie. This will help improve your speaking and pronunciation. It will also help you remember not just what the word means, but how to use it in context.

You can even memorize famous lines to remember key words and grammar rules. Not only will you have fun quotations to share with your Spanish-speaking friends, you’ll also have a handy model to use whenever you need a little help with vocabulary or grammar.

Try not to stop there! Push your learning even farther by learning one scene at a time. Pick a scene you really love—or one that you really struggle to understand, if you want a little challenge—and use the following learning tactics.

  • Watch the scene. After watching it once, stop and rewind to the beginning of the scene.
  • Watch it again and jot down the words you don’t understand. Look them up.
  • Watch the scene again and again until you understand every word in context. This will help improve your vocabulary and your listening.

A more relaxing learning option is to just sit back and enjoy the movie. Don’t take notes. If you don’t understand something, don’t worry about it. Just try your best to enjoy the film.

This type of passive listening (where you’re not actively trying hard to pay attention and make sense of everything) is still very useful, too. While you might not know the precise definitions of some individual words, you’ll have a better understanding of how the spoken language sounds in general. This will help you improve as a speaker, and it will also help you to get more and more comfortable and confident understanding of spoken Spanish.

With language learning, repetition is always key.

  • Daily viewing. If it’s a movie you love, go ahead and watch it every day.
  • A little a day. If you don’t have the time or energy for that, try watching a little each day—perhaps a scene with rapid dialogue or one you find particularly challenging.
  • Background viewing. You can always leave the movie on in the background while you’re busy doing other things. This is very helpful for passive listening, as you will hear the words and sounds without even having to pay full attention to it.

Get that popcorn ready. Have fun and happy watching!

Emotions are running wild in Disney’s Inside Out 2. Serving as the follow-up to the original 2015 movie, the Inside Out sequel kicks off with a group of new emotions, and even more crazier problems. Riley Andersen (Kensington Tallman) has grown up a lot since the last time audiences saw her. Now 13 years old, Riley embarks on a new chapter of her life at a shiny new school all while navigating foreign social territories. Meanwhile, Riley’s emotions – Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black), Fear (Tony Hale), and Disgust (Liza Lapira) – make sure that things run smoothly at headquarters so that Riley can adapt to her new environment easily. But when the gang receives some unwanted company, operations go haywire, as a group of unfamiliar emotions take over headquarters and bottle up Riley’s existing emotions.

Directed by Kelsey Mann and produced by Mark Nielsen, Inside Out 2 features new cast members Maya Hawke as Anxiety, Ayo Edebiri as Envy, Adèle Exarchopoulos as Ennui, and Paul Walter Hauser as Embarrassment.

In Disney’s Inside Out 2, Riley Anderson (Tallman) is now a full-fledged teenager embarking on the wild ride of puberty and unfamiliar social scenes at her new school. With her teen years in full swing, Riley’s emotional headquarters is thrown into chaos. Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust, the trusty crew from her childhood, suddenly find themselves dealing with a new batch of emotions that disrupt everything.

Riley’s once-sunny personality is overshadowed by a new emotion, Anxiety (Hawke), who attempts to micromanage every aspect of Riley’s life, leading to more chaos than calm. As Anxiety takes over the reins of headquarters, Riley also grapples with anxiety and a desperate desire to fit in with the cool crowd. If that’s not enough, Anxiety is also joined by Envy (Edebiri), Ennui (Exarchopoulos), and Embarrassment (Hauser). As these new emotions take over headquarters, the original crew must band together to restore balance and herself amidst the ups and downs of growing up.
