How Accurate Was The Science In Bones?

Temperance Brennan

Where some procedurals dig into the science of behavioral profiling , others go headfirst into forensics to catch the weekly killer. " Bones " carved a home for itself among the competition by making a production of forensic anthropology in the unique setting of the Smithsonian Institute. On "Bones," most of the victim's bodies are reduced to something closer to a skeleton than a fleshy human, providing ample fodder for the series' titular bones — the heart of their forensics.

The core of the on-screen scientific team is Dr. Temperance "Bones" Brennan, who's based on a real forensic anthropologist, the producer Kathy Reichs. Also in the lab is forensic artist and tech expert Angela Montenegro ( Michaela Conlin ) and the entomologist Dr. Jack Hodgins (T.J. Thyne), who make up the "Bones" forensics team with a rotating array of interns .

Typically, Brennan looks at the skeleton to determine age, sex, and cause of death, while Angela recreates the victim's facial features to identify them, and Hodgins studies any unique particulates found on or near the body in the form of insects, mold, or minerals. Their science fuels the investigation as FBI Agent Seeley Booth ( David Boreanaz ) does the usual talking to suspects and looking for motive thing.

But just how accurate is the science they portray? Well, let's get into it.

What can a skeleton really tell you about sex, age, and ancestry?

Bones holding skull

With each case on "Bones," the victim's body is usually too disfigured — by decomposition or other methods — to be identified by sight alone, so in most episodes Brennan needs to identify the sex, age, and ancestry of the person to get an idea of who they are. She might look at the pelvis or teeth, for example, but every case is different. However, according to the real life anthropologist Kristina Killgrove, her methods usually aren't up to snuff.

Killgrove has reviewed several seasons worth of Bones episodes on their scientific accuracy and this is one topic that crops up again and again. When writing about Season 9's episode "The Master in the Slop," she wrote , "As usual, sex/age/ancestry was super easy – sure, greater sciatic notch is a quick-and-dirty way to estimate sex. Auricular surface can help in age estimation, but I don't know anyone who can just look at one and tell that narrow an age range." The episode's method to narrow down the victim's race to Caucasian didn't hold up, either. For other episodes, she disparaged their use of brow ridge shape and dental wear to estimate age, sex, and ancestry.

However, in some cases, "Bones" does get it right. In the Season 7 episode "The Memories in the Shallow Grave," Killgrove wrote : "The age/sex estimation is reasonable." That might be as high a praise as they get in that department, though, as she ranked that episode as the third best in terms of scientific accuracy.

Bones usually doesn't get a positive ID on a victim

Bones lab skeleton

After identifying the very basics of the victim — age, sex, ancestry — the next step is to look at other details in order to get a positive ID of who the victim actually is. Here's where anthropologist Kristina Killgrove comes across more recurring issues. Those facial reconstruction pictures that Angela often creates? Those simply don't cut it when it comes to positively identifying a victim, Killgrove says.

She gripes that they don't always get confirmation of the victim's ID in an episode, but does acknowledge that they sometimes do it right. She rated the Season 9 episode "The Dude in the Dam" as the best "Bones" episode in terms of scientific accuracy, in part because of how they positively ID the victim. She wrote , "[L]oads of points for using two different genetically-linked traits and dental records to ID the victim."

Yet in another review , she harps on the simplicity of the identification in the episode, saying, "As usual, no osteologist would use just three traits to ID the person. (As a point of reference, I just handed out a packet of 25 pages of data collection sheets to my Human Osteology class today, for use in their final skeletal ID report.)" What audiences see on "Bones" is usually a stretch of the truth — their methods are often too basic, but are rooted in real techniques.

The scientific inaccuracies don't end there

Hodgins laser evidence

While "Bones" gets some science right, a lot of it is inaccurate or exaggerated for the sake of the story. On the subreddit r/AskAnthropology , users with varying levels of expertise chimed in to express their opinions on the science in "Bones" with a general consensus that while some of the base science is accurate, the series often goes into fantastical territory. Sometimes they just get something done far faster than could happen in real life, but other things are practically impossible. User metatronlevel55 wrote: "I raged so hard on the episode where someone wrote a computer virus on bones so when scanned they would corrupt the computer. Just no."

Of course, real life usually doesn't make for good TV. However, there are some areas where "Bones" is lacking for no story-improving reason. The anthropologist Kristina Killgrove points out that the characters frequently mispronounce words or say terms that are out of date. In what she ranks as the worst "Bones" episode science-wise, Brennan kept saying " Homo sapien " instead of " Homo sapiens " — the scientific name for the human species, a name Brennan should absolutely know.

Every episode of "Bones" may be full of scientific terms and procedures and experiments, but the series is just as much science-fiction as it is mystery.

Bones Shocker: TJ Thyne on What That Heartbreaking Twist Means for Angela and Hodgins

Can the couple survive this setback?

adam-bryant.jpg

[WARNING: The following story contains spoilers from Thursday's midseason finale of Bones . Read at your own risk.]

The bomb that went off on Thursday's midseason finale of Bones may have blown up one of the show's key relationships.

The second episode of the two-hour finale opened with an explosion that sent Aubrey ( John Boyd ) to the hospital with some pretty scary injuries, which he sustained by shielding Hodgins ( TJ Thyne ) from the blast. However, the episode ended with a devastating twist: While Aubrey eventually left the hospital and seemed to be OK, Hodgins' bumps and bruises turned out to be much more severe after some delayed swelling around his spinal cord leaves Hodgins paralyzed.

Bones boss on how the midseason finale changes everything But is Hodgins' sad diagnosis permanent? "You can't say never, but as far as we're concerned, he's going to be wheelchair-bound," executive producer Michael Peterson tells TVGuide.com, adding that Hodgins will be put through the wringer as he comes to grips with his situation. "It's a process. There's all these different stages of dealing with a tragedy -- you go through anger, you go through denial -- and he's really going to hit every single one of them. It affects his job, it affects his relationship with Angela and his kids. We're going to see the Hodgins of the first couple of seasons, a guy who had to work with anger management, who used to snap his rubber band on his wrist to keep some of his anger in control. He's going to be a little more Gregory House than Hodgins for a while. He's just pissed at the world. This is not where life was supposed to be take him." And as Hodgins spirals toward his rock bottom, his wife Angela ( Michaela Conlin ) may turn to an unexpected source for comfort: photojournalist Sebastian Kohl ( Gil Darnell ). "Angela's going to need a shoulder to lean on," Peterson says. "We'll play with some tensions that perhaps she's relying on Sebastian a bit too much. For her, Sebastian is this alternative life. She has this wonderful life with Hodgins and she's very happy, but there is this alternative life of adventure and being an artist and traveling all over the world, and he represents that. When she decided last year to not move to Paris and stay at the Jeffersonian and support Hodgins, she was OK with that decision. But there's this dream other life that's out there and he embodies that."

Mega Buzz: Bones nabs Sara Rue for guest arc

But does this actually mean the end of Angela and Hodgins' marriage? And why might Hodgins be partially responsible for Angela running to Sebastian? TVGuide.com chatted with Thyne about this huge twist for his character and what we can expect in the second half of the season.

This story line was originally pitched to happen in the season opener , so you must have known about it for a while now. But what did you think when you first heard the idea? TJ Thyne: I was really stoked. For many seasons, Hodgins and Angela have, for the most part, taken a bit of a backseat, which I don't think is a bad thing. For so many years in the early seasons, they had such struggle and difficulty and stress in their relationship. But for the last many seasons, it's been the happy couple. I feel like we've kind of played that for such a long time that I was stoked finding out that Hodgins and Angela were going to have some conflict and some serious issues to have to contend with.

We don't see Hodgins react to the news in this episode. Will we see that when the show returns? How does he handle what's happened? Thyne: When we come back, it's eight weeks later, so a lot of Hodgins' initial reactions to being paralyzed, we don't get to see. When we pick back up, Jack is very much anxious to prove that he's absolutely going to get out of the chair as soon as possible and it's his struggle to stay as positive as possible while the rest of the team is so desperately concerned about him. The last thing they want him to do is work and the only thing he can think to do is work. So, there's that real struggle. They're taking away from him the one thing that's going to actually give him the hope to be able to walk. So it's a real stressful time for them all, but he believes that he's going absolutely crush this thing and get out of that chair as soon as possible, but I don't know that that's really the truth.

Yeah, Michael made it pretty clear that this is, if not permanent, at least something Hodgins will be dealing with for some time. When does he begin to realize that? Thyne: I think Episode 11 is a almost like a false sense of acceptance because he believes, "Well, this is temporary." Starting with Episode 12 and beyond is when he really, suddenly starts going through the stages of depression, and anger, and frustration. What starts happening is he's literally pushing everyone away, and it's pretty hard for the team, because someone they love is really angry and aggressively pushing them away.

This is obviously even more tragic because Hodgins had just told Angela he was ready to have more kids. Is that part of where the tension between them starts? Thyne: Where we're at right now, he can't physically have a child and so it's forced him to have to put that on the back burner. That's part of the anger that he has, and he's taking that anger out a bit on Angela. It's the one thing that she wants that he now can't provide her, and I think that makes him feel like he's incapable and quite literally incompetent at being able to provide her the one thing she wants.

Mega Buzz: Which Bones couple is splitting up?

And it sounds like the tension in the relationship leads Angela to turn toward Sebastian. Is he a threat to their marriage? Thyne: I think we've maybe all been there in life at times when someone you care about is going through a something .You don't even mean to, but maybe you open up to the closest person or someone that just happens to be there. I have a feeling... that the person around happens to be Sebastian, so she ends up opening up to him. I don't think Angela would ordinarily ever choose to do that and I think because of their long history, the audience would not be comfortable with her talking to Sebastian about Jack for any reason whatsoever. But on the flip side, we've never seen Hodgins push Angela away like this. So, I think the fans will feel what she's feeling, which is, "What am I to do? He won't even talk to me. He won't look at me."

Is Hodgins aware that he's pushing her away or is he just too lost in his anger? Thyne: There are moments in life where you're so upset with yourself that it's almost for the other person that you're pushing them away. You almost are so mad at you that it's like, "I want you to leave me because I'm so pathetic and worthless. I love you too much for you to be stuck with me." It's almost like looking into Angela's eyes is a mirror to him of how he's not the man he wants to be for her. He fought so hard to be the man that she'd fall for, to finally get her and have these wonderful years. Now all of a sudden, he's in a position where he feels she now can't have the guy that she fell for. He thinks he's doing it for her, but instead, of course, he's hurting the person that he cares about the most. It's going to be hard.

With all the contraptions Hodgins has built for experiments through the years, I'm sure he can find new ways to do his work from a wheelchair, right? Thyne: I think we have to see him get through the emotional side of this first. It's about figuring out how much of the story do we have time to tell and how deep can we go with the other story lines and of course, every week having to still tell the tale of whatever that murder is. We have so many ideas. If and when we get to see Jack get to acceptance stage with his current situation, he will definitely have some fun, but he really does have to get there and I don't know how many more opportunities we're going to have. Do we have 10 more opportunities or do we have an entire new season after this?

Is this the last season of Bones ?

That's a pretty big open question. Are you personally interested in a Season 12? Thyne: I think Jonathan and Michael have proven in Season 11 that there's still a lot to be told. I would love to see this journey continue for the characters. Having said that, I think all of us actors on the show have been doing this long enough that it's kind of like we're amazed at how long we've had on one particular journey, and we're so grateful for it. Inevitably, something has to come to an end at some point and if were to, then I think it's going to tearful with lots of hugs and kisses and pats on the back. But there's a part of me though, that I feel like we've got more to say. I don't know how much more, but I feel there's definitely a ton of fuel still in the tank, and I could certainly see it going on and on for a while longer.

Whether the show ends this season or not, do you think Angela and Hodgins will weather this storm? Thyne: I have faith. They've gone through so much just to get together and now to stay together through something that's really going to challenge them. That beauty of true love is what they really define. They truly love each other. They chose each other. They want to be with each other through thick and thin, through difficult and happy. They are meant to be together, but this is really going to test that. Not knowing how this is going to turn out, my faith is in them. I have faith that they will make it through, as difficult as it may be, that they, I think, are the perfect marriage and they will find a way through, for better or worse.

BONES Season Finale Recap: “The Pain in the Heart”

Before we get into Seeleybaby’s recap of the season finale of BONES, I just wanted to take a minute and thank her for bringing this show to GMMR this year. I know many of you are fans, and I was glad that you now had GMMR as an outlet to talk about the show. Just because I wasn’t watching it didn’t mean you weren’t. I’m going to do my best to catch up on BONES this summer. I can’t promise anything, but I’ll try. And once again, thank you Seeleybaby for your great recaps! I’m sure other BONES fans are really happy you came along.

…… Mixed feelings before this episode. Hoping to find out what’s up with our man Booth, hoping the title doesn’t mean a literal pain in his heart, or someone else’s heart because he’s dead or eaten by Gormogon or something.

Within the first ten minutes, we find out Booth is not dead, and Brennan busts in on him when he’s naked in his bathtub. All is forgiven, Bones writers. Sorry for doubting you.

Why was Booth at his own funeral? I don’t actually care. He’s alive. I feel better now, but Booth doesn’t because Brennan slaps him hard across the face.

In the lab Booth says he swears he told the FBI to tell her he wasn’t really dead, and he was a little disappointed Brennan wasn’t crying and that there weren’t that many people there. Hahaha. It seems no one on the team knew he was not dead. Sweets tells Brennan she had a strong reaction because of her strong feelings for Booth, and her punching him was passionate. Booth likes this and kind of gets in her face. She says the emotion was a passionate anger. Booth has heard enough. Zack tells Brennan she has a package. It’s a human jawbone with silver screws courtesy of Gormogon.

The Case: Aforementioned jawbone linked to Gormogon. The team examines the bone, and each makes an observation. Zack and Hodgins do an experiment, and a severe explosion takes place. Zack is suffering third degree burns. The explosion causes a diversion where the silver skeleton has been stolen and everyone at the Jeffersonian is now a suspect.

The Squints: Even though a lot of the blame was shifted onto Hodgins, and then Sweets, I actually thought Cam was the scariest. She was really quick to blame Hodgins and Sweets, and didn’t have much mercy for Zack at the end. Not much Angela this episode; she convinced Brennan to go to the funeral, and she helped stay with Zack. I thought Hodgins was amazing this episode. He was hurting knowing that even inadvertently he may have caused pain to his friend, and he willingly gave evidence that pointed toward himself as a suspect.

As for Zack…well…I don’t know what to say. At least he never ate anybody.

B&B: My girl Bren suffered a lot this episode. First the death of Booth, then the non-death of Booth, and Sweets shoving her emotions in her face as part of an ‘experiment’. She caught on, smart girl. Her emotion toward Zack was very moving to me.

My boy, Booth, he also suffered. He was not happy when his Bones wasn’t too sad about his death, and he also was upset with Sweets for not telling her he was alive. Of course, he’s more upset that Brennan isn’t upset with Sweets’s ‘professional decision’. Don’t you know why, Booth? She takes it, she takes YOU personally!

I’m proud of Brennan for getting on Booth’s case about not telling her personally that he was alive. He goes on about protocol and national security, which is a load of bunk, and Brennan tells him this, seeing as how he almost always does what he wants. She’s taking it personally; good for her. She barges into his bathroom and claims he doesn’t have any concern for her. He’s heard enough and jumps up (naked) and, quite rightly, tells her he took a bullet for her. She wants to know if he trusts her. He does.

I like how even when she is mad at him, Booth is still the one she talks to. His proving to her at the end that Zack knew she cared is nice, and the way she lays her head on his shoulder indicates to me that all is well between them.

Favorite Lines of the Night: 1. Anything Booth said, because (hey, have you heard?) he’s alive, but mostly when he’s trying to get Brennan to punch Sweets in the face (slug him).

2. Hodgins and Zack to Cam: “We want to do one of our experiments.”

3. Brennan’s student:“I’m third in my class.” Brennan: “I’d like the names of the two students ahead of you.” Hahahaha!

Seeleybaby is glad the writer’s strike is over but now has to clear out her DVR for new episodes of Bones, The Office, and Scrubs. She also is still sad Arrested Development isn’t on (COME ON!) and is looking forward to more Flight of the Conchords.

Another mention of Schroedinger’s cat! Are the networks getting together to drill educational things into our heads on purpose!?

' src=

I KNOW!!! I laughed when I went back and watched BBT after Bones…that was funny, and i’m glad they explained it. It helped me understand Zack better 🙂

' src=

I don’t think I am really happy about Zach being a bad guy (even if he didn’t eat anyone) but overall, I loved the B&B interplay. I loved Booth in the tub. He is such a girl! I also thought Hodgins was spot on.

' src=

I thought it was crazy that both BBT and Bones mentioned Schroedinger’s cat, especially since I got into both shows recently through GMMR! I have to start using it now.

I thought it was a great episode, although I’m really, really sad about Zach. Is he coming back next season?

Patti, I agree, although…Booth looked like all man to me in the tub.hahaha Moe…doesn’t look like he will. I mean, he’s not dead, so I guess it’s possible, but everything I’ve read indicates he will not be back, at least not as a regular cast member.

' src=

I noticed the two references to Shroedinger’s cat as well. CSI recently had a murdered cat named Shroedinger, Catherine got the reference, not sure if anyone else did though. Sheldon did an excellent job of explaining the paradox!

' src=

I love these recaps, but wow. This episode I have mixed feelings on, mostly because I love Zack. Some amazing emotions shown, some reallly funny lines. But ZACK? No. I like him so much!

' src=

I HATE that they made Zack the bad guy! It felt so forced and out of nowhere! Did they do it just to write him off the show? Were they planning it all along, because if so I feel like they could have dropped some hints so that looking back I could be like, “Oh, okay, that makes sense.” Because to me right now it just does not make any sense at all. He is such a great character and I am going to really miss his interactions with the others. Boo!

Yes, they did do it to write him off the show. TVGuide.com has an interesting interview with him. Yeah I agree, it felt forced…casualty of the strike and trying to fit everything in, I guess. I really am also going to miss King of the Lab and all the other stuff…we’ll see I guess. I liked that he wasn’t totally evil, and I think he showed remorse at the end. and I think Brennan was right; he sacrificed for Hodgins safety…hahaha…I told GMMR I could have written twice as much, as you can see…but yeah, I agree that I’m not thrilled with how it all worked out.

' src=

I, too, am upset that Zach is gone. I adore Zach and it just won’t be the same w/o him. I’m assuming they’re going to bring that guy back from a previous episode (i don’t remember his name) but he was the one working on behalf of Brennan’s dad during his trial. He may be the one who’s going to take Zach’s spot. He definitely has some shoes to fill b/c i just can’t see anyone taking over for Zach. I hope he comes back in some future episodes or something though i doubt it since he’ll be in a psych ward or something. Sigh. Overall, i was ok w/ the finale. I probably would have liked it more if Zach hadn’t been taken off the show.

' src=

I must not have been paying as much attention during that eppie as I thought, because I totally missed the Schroedinger’s cat reference.

I was really disappointed with this episode – mostly because of Zach. While it wasn’t out of the blue, they did hint in season one when that lady came and did psych evals on everyone that Zach could be dangerous, I think they could’ve explored that without doing something that cuts him out of the show so completely. It also made sense for Zach to blow up his own experiment – very Gormagonish behavior, but seriously why did they have to lose Zach? No more king of the lab…I think they shot themselves in the foot with this and took away a very enjoyable dynamic.

Loved everyone else in this eppie – although I wish we’d had more Angela. Also particularly loved the charactor development with Sweets, he’s been a great addition this season!

' src=

i just wondered after the explosion, who taked away the silver skeleton?ZACK was sent to the hospital, obviously he is not the guy.Sweet has the time, maybe he is the another apprentice.Because ZACK said we don`t call he like this

' src=

Is there any way to see the finale, I just missed it.

' src=

WHERE CAN I SEE THIS EPPISODE! ahg i missed it and i cant find it anywhere on the internet:[

Bones recap: The Next in the Last

There's no place like home (which is the lab, until it's not).

Science was never my favorite subject in school, but Bones makes me feel differently. It’s not because of Hodgins’ experiments, although his love of trial and error is as much the heart of this show as anything. It’s because of the way Brennan uses science to make sense of the world. Science, to Brennan, isn’t a set of answers so much as it is the context for those answers—a pattern that accepts the inevitability of change but leaves room for second chances. It’s safe to assume that one of those second chances will bring Booth and Brennan back to the team, but for now, they’re moving into the unknown.

After everything she and Booth have been through, it’s understandable that Brennan would want a fresh start. Booth takes a little more convincing: He loves the FBI, and what they’re doing is important. But, as Brennan points out, “There are other important things we could do that won’t get us killed.” Before they can make any decisions, the body of Franklin Holt, an independent computer consultant, is found flayed and impaled on an obelisk with a flower in his mouth. All signs point to Christopher Pelant, the hacker who once ruined Brennan’s marriage proposal for literally no good reason, but Pelant is dead. Is this the work of a copycat, or did he have an apprentice? If we find a silver skeleton in anyone’s basement, I’m out of here.

At least the murder’s Pelant undertones have the happy side effect of bringing together the entire team. Hodgins and Angela take a break from packing for Paris to lend a hand, not that Hodgins needs much of an excuse to do lab work, and Wendell and Daisy volunteer their time, too. It’s as good an excuse as any to give everyone a part to play in what might have been the series finale. Brennan could never even consider leaving if she didn’t believe that her interns were up to the task. Which they are—they learned from the best. She’s grilling them a little harder this time, because she cares.

Booth does the same with Aubrey, stepping back to watch him prove himself. Caroline can tell that something’s up, so Booth admits that this is going to be his last case. What are he and Brennan going to do next? He’s got an NSA job offer in Kansas, and she’s got an offer to take over at a nearby university, but they’re both also tempted by the idea of just having their baby and living their lives. In any case, Booth tells Caroline that he’s still got a few bones that haven’t been broken yet. He’d like to keep it that way. “There’s a lot of good agents here,” Booth says. “A lot better than me.” Caroline, speaking for us all, tells him to shut up: “There is no one better than you. But I’ll act like there is if you want me to.” Welcome to my first cry of the hour.

It’s hard to even focus on the case with all of this change in the air, so let’s not waste time: Holt consulted for a firm, Kevin Dunlop Investments, that handled money for dictators, drug lords, and other seedy characters—including Pelant. Using his experience with his father’s Wall Street schemes, Aubrey talks Dunlop into admitting that he had the $4.6 billion account that Pelant stole from Hodgins, but it disappeared when Holt’s body turned up. All of Holt’s hard drives are missing, and the only clue Angela has is a VHS tape of the 1983 movie Strange Brew . ( Bones ! Only you.) Holt encrypted his files on there, but decrypting them will take time that no one has.

Instead, the team focuses on a pizza. Holt had a pizza delivered on the night of his murder, so Hodgins uses an old school machine to test it for particulates. He has better equipment at his disposal; he’s just always wanted to use this one, and this is his last chance. Hodgins looks at isotopes falling on a graph like he’s staring into the sun. The machine does its job—I’m so glad it doesn’t break—and reveals gunshot residue. (“That’s why he didn’t eat the pizza: because he was DEAD.”) Is the pizza delivery man the killer?

NEXT: Chickens on a train

The night of Holt’s murder, someone called to switch his order from delivery to pickup. From the security footage, Brennan can tell that the person who picked up the pizza is a woman, but she does as teachers do and lets her proteges figure it out on their own. The woman, Leelah Strawn, claimed to be Holt’s girlfriend, but she’s actually a hacker. She must have killed Holt for the information on his computer.

Angela tracks Leelah to a rail yard, where Booth and Aubrey chase her to a train—which is, of course, full of chickens, because nothing adds to the drama like a chorus of clucks. Leelah locks Booth out of the train car and tazes Aubrey, who takes it like a pro and makes the arrest anyway. He has to make Booth proud. Booth is, of course, proud, because he cares about this kid in spite of himself. Booth hates being a mentor—anyone who admires him is someone he’s capable of disappointing—but somehow that only makes him a better mentor. He’s just doing his thing, and with the exception of that gambling relapse, it’s worth emulating.

Now that Angela has the hard drives that Leelah stole, she can decrypt more of the information on the VHS, leading her right to Hodgins’ $4.6 billion. She tells her husband that she found his money—all of it. He kisses her, calls her brilliant, and tells her to get rid of it forever. The money is dirty now, it will never be safe, and they don’t need it anyway. Hodgins can trade the money he always resented for money he earned with his own ingenuity, and he can use the old money to help his friends. He asks Angela to give it to hundreds of charities. “Let them find a cure for the cancer that Wendell has,” he says. T.J. Thyne’s face is so bright here that I’m crying again.

Angela agrees, but on one condition: They stay at the Jeffersonian. “I saw you with that crazy machine,” she says, “and your life is here for now, and I’m okay with it. As long as I’m with you.” Hodgins and Angela’s relationship is always going to be about balancing sacrifices, because their interests are so fundamentally different, but this is a functional compromise. They still have a house in Paris, and it’s not like they have to struggle to afford flights. They can take as many vacations as they want.

They just might have to spend a few of them going wherever Booth and Brennan go. Where will that be? Will they go to Kansas? That would be anticlimactic. Brennan is a traveler, and Booth told her right after they met that when he goes on vacation, he thinks about never coming back. I’d like to see them on an adventure. But what matters now is that for the first time, she and Booth are really ready to see more of the world than its dead bodies. They deserve it. I’ve always appreciated their commitment to this job—catching bad guys is a part of their value system—but I’m interested to see what it does to them to get away for a while. I’m glad we’ll get the chance to.

Bits and pieces:

  • “You were going to leave the FBI last year and move to Europe. You remember how great you felt about that?” No? He never felt great about that promotion, even before it turned out to be part of an FBI conspiracy that sent him to jail for three months.
  • “No one’s getting killed.” “That’s what you always say before the shooting starts.”
  • “Now you should know that I actually helped bring down my own father, Mr. Dunlop, so bringing you down will be a piece of cake. And as my friends here can attest, I love cake.” This is either the best or the worst line to ever come out of Aubrey’s obsession with food. I’m just not sure which.
  • Give it up for Cam, whose patience goes uncelebrated every day. She loves these people, even when they tell her nothing.
  • Booth left his bobblehead bobby on the desk just so he could dramatically turn back for it before he left, didn’t he?
  • Pelant left a message on one of the tapes about how death can’t stop him or some other serial killer nonsense, and Brennan shuts it off, because nobody runs Brennan’s life but Brennan.
  • The sight of Booth in Brennan’s doorway in a leather jacket, T-shirt, and jeans was vintage early-season Bones .
  • “In our culture we all search for closure, but closure is an illusion. Science shows us that the universe is constantly in flux. It’s what allows our friendships and our love to constantly surprise us.”
  • Of all the hugs, Brennan’s hug with Hodgins got me most.

Still Reeling From That ‘Bones’ Fall Finale Twist? TJ Thyne Speaks About the Life-Changing Future for Hodgins

Spoiler alert! Do not read this post unless you’ve seen the two-part Bones fall finale!

TJ Thyne, who plays Jack Hodgins, has been a part of Bones since the very first episode, but he’s about to take on one of his biggest challenges on the series: being paralyzed.

The twist was originally supposed to play out in the season’s opening hour, but circumstances led to the show swapping episodes at the last moment. But Thyne was briefed by the Fox drama’s new showrunners, Michael Peterson and Jonathan Collier, over the summer. “I was stoked,” Thyne recalls.

The only problem? He had to keep the storyline from his co-stars. “It was hard to keep it from them, but I kept it from them, as much as I could,” Thyne laughs. “We’re all so close, there were some rumblings between me and Tamara [Taylor] and Michaela [Conlin]. I’d be like, ‘ Maybe something is going to happen.’ But they eventually found out, and we talked about it, together.”

Bones - season 11 fall finale

“The Doom in the Boom,” the second half of the  Bones fall finale, ended with Hodgins’s loved ones getting the news of his paralysis, but Hodgins himself didn’t find out in the hour. When the show returns, it’ll have moved forward about two months.

“Jack is just getting through his hospital stay,” Thyne teases of Bones ’ eventual return. “He’s desperately trying to put on a happy face and show the world that he knows this is temporary; he’s going to get out of this chair, soon, and life is going to return to the way that it was. [Everyone else] is not so sure of that. Cam and Brennan and Angela are all so worried for Jack, for his safety and his health. They don’t want him doing anything to put himself in a worse situation than he’s already been.”

The reality of the situation will eventually hit Hodgins, though. “They’re going to let me go through [the stages of grief],” Thyne says. “Will it be seven episodes? Will it be a touch of each one in lots of episodes? We’re going to have to figure it out. But he’s going to go through all of the stages, and that’s the journey I’m most looking forward to.”

Hodgins’ paralysis will also shake up his marriage to Angela (Conlin). The couple had just decided to try for a second child when his injury appeared, and now they have to figure out where they stand.

“I think Angela and Jack, they had such great storylines early on in this show,” Thyne says. “They went through the wringer. But for the past many seasons, they’ve been the happy-go-lucky couple on the show: Hodgins doing experiments and Angela being a shoulder for others to cry on. We haven’t had much to do. To now have some conflict in our relationship, conflict in our world, it’s exciting as an actor.”

Thyne continued, “I love them, more than any relationship on television. I think they’ve earned their love. [But] they’re going to be put to the test. It is for better or worse right now. I have faith they’ll see their way through, but it’ll get really ugly in the meantime.”

Bones has often tackled real-world important issues (veterans, addiction, Neurofibromatosis, illegal immigration), and Thyne embraces being a part of a challenging story like this. “It’s nice to be able to shed light on an issue that truly affects so many people on this planet—dealing with being chair-bound and paraplegic,” he says. “What is that like, day in and day out? The relationships that are attached to that, let alone the physical strain of that. So I’m hoping to honor those who have to truly deal with this every day. I hope we do a good job of honoring those personal journeys. We try so hard on this show to be respectful of the science, but at the end of the day, it’s a TV show, so there are times we have to take liberties. I hope we don’t take any with this story that distances us too much from those who [have the real] experience.”

To that end, Thyne has also set a goal for himself as Hodgins navigates his new normal: he doesn’t leave Hodgins’ wheelchair on the show’s studio lot, once he goes through hair and makeup. “I’m doing it because I want to honor the character,” Thyne says. “I don’t want to just be jumping up and down between scenes. I want to be respectful to Hodgins and what he’s going through. There is a sense of, this is his life now, so with me in the chair, getting comfortable with it, understanding it. And all the struggles I go through with it: even something like a lot in 2015, it’s amazing how [difficult] it is.”

The (naturally) crowded soundstages have also proven to be an unexpected struggle for Thyne in his chair. “I ask them to give me a 10-minute warning before everyone else, so I can get myself to the stages,” he shares. “I have to know six or seven ways to get around, because in the last 10 minutes [since I left], someone has put a light right there and I can’t move my chair around it. You find these moments where you go, how would I get around? Instead of standing up and picking the chair up over something, it’s like, all right, I have to find a way. There have been one or two times where I found myself a bit stranded. “

But Thyne is very aware he’s lucky. “At the end of a 12, 14-hour day, I’m able to stand up,” he notes. “What a blessing; what a gift. I get to do the thing so many people in this situation would love to do: at the end of the day, I get to file it away and stand up, out of the chair.”

Showrunner Michael Peterson also praises Thyne’s commitment to Hodgins’s new way of life. “TJ is the most committed actor I’ve ever seen when it comes to this,” he says. “When he’s on the lot, he doesn’t leave his wheelchair.” (You can read more from Peterson on all of Bones ‘ finale twists here .)

For his part, Thyne is equally as impressed by his new bosses. “This has been my favorite season since the early days,” he says, noting the duo is constantly open to his feedback on storylines. “Jonathan and Michael kick ass. They’re so good, and I’m having so much fun with them this season. I think they brought such a great energy to an eleventh season of a show.”

The Body and the Bounty

The Body and the Bounty

  • After a skull and decomposing hands are found in a dumpster, the team must not only solve the crime but also search for the rest of the victim's remains. Identified as Ray Raminsky, the victim turns out to be a bounty hunter in search of Charles Braverman, a man indicted for the murder of a co-worker. Meanwhile, Brennan is asked by Professor Bunsen Jude "The Science Dude" if he can shoot an episode of his children's show from The Jeffersonian Lab with Brennan as his special guest. Brennan initially turns him down, but is surprised when he makes her a deal she can't refuse, so she takes him on as a new "squintern." As the team pieces together the details of the crime, they discover that they are not alone in the hunt for Braverman and find themselves in a chase with an unexpected suspect. — Fox Publicity
  • Showing an anti-capitalist friend the 'dumpster diver' ropes in search of a free lunch, Dylan digs up a man's head and beard remnants. Angela reconstructs the face and the head is identified by bail bondsman Gregory Gering as Ray 'Wolf' Kaminski, who was tracking $1,000,000 bail multiple murder suspect Charles Braverman. The beard's contents leads to a tract in West Virginia, where the rest of Ray's body is found. Charles escapes because of rival bounty hunter Janet LeBlanc. Hodgins' experiments identify the cause of the rib fracture immediately preceding Wolf's death. — KGF Vissers
  • Two young freegans discover a mother load in a dumpster near a pair of restaurants. The man smells something "choice" -- probably meat. He's right: HUMAN MEAT! CUT to B&B driving to the scene of the crime. They discuss the "perfect murder" -- theoretically, of course. Bones ( Emily Deschanel ) says she would annihilate the body. No body, no murder. Booth ( David Boreanaz ) says the "perfect murder" is impossible. Moments later, they arrive on the scene and examine a nasty skull and sawed-off hands. Booth theorizes injuries to the fingers would indicate the man handled big guns. Military, perhaps? Back at the Jeffersonian, Camille ( Tamara Taylor ) introduces Bunsen Jude ( David Alan Grier ), the "science dude," a man in a colorful red jacket who hosts his own children's science show. "I would like to shoot a special episode of my show here in your lab," Jude says. Bones immediately refuses. "Children are not rigorous when it comes to critical enquiry," she explains. Jude offers to prove himself. "I'll assist you in this case," he says. "If I'm useful, you do my show." Surprisingly, Bones agrees. Jude examines the remains and discovers that the hair found on the scene was a beard. Then the "science dude" throws up in the waste basket. Angela ( Michaela Conlin ) recreates the victim's face -- complete with giant beard -- on her computer. Later, Booth shows the photo to Gregory Gering ( Thomas Kopache ), a bail bondsman with a terrible rug. He says the victim was a skip tracer called the "Wolf." Turns out the Wolf was tracking a dangerous criminal when he disappeared. Jude, meanwhile, visits Hodgins ( T.J. Thyne ). The latter has discovered the victim had barbeque sauce in his beard. Even better, the sauce has ingredients common to a certain area of Virginia. Combined with a bug leg and a pine needle, Angela deduces the man was in a certain mile-long stretch. So Booth heads out into the woods with a dog that specializes in finding human remains. It's not too long before the dog stops and lies down. She has found something. Moments later, Camille and Booth examine the dug up body, which is missing its hand and heads. "I'd say we found the rest of our victim," Camille says. Caroline ( Patricia Belcher ) quickly arrives on the scene. She explains the victim was chasing the criminal Charles Braverman ( Zac Henry ). Worse: Braverman's wife was going to testify against him -- but she has gone missing. Back at the Jeffersonian, Jude notices a hole in the victim's rib. "Most likely a gunshot," Jude says. Bones quickly points out the damage to the adjoining rib doesn't match. So Bones asks Angela to create a reenactment of the victim's death. Turns out Wolf was NOT killed by a gunshot. He was struck in the rib and a piece of that rib entered his heart, killing him. Sorry, "science dude." Later, Booth informs Bones that he has found Mrs. Braverman. They arrive to question her -- and spot Mr. Braverman outside! The pair gives chase through a nearby parking garage. Braverman runs to the second level and LEAPS through the window. He lands HARD, but manages to limp away. Booth, meanwhile, runs smack dab into a female bounty hunter who was ALSO pursuing Braverman. Booth lets the tough woman go in order to "double the pressure on Braverman." Says Booth: "I don't care who gets him first." Later, Jude and Bones reexamine the victim's ribs -- and make a discovery. Turns out the two disparate wounds are from different injuries. In other words, the victim injured a rib about a week before his death. It was the second injury which propelled the piece of bone into his heart. It appears Jude and Bones are bonding. CUT to Caroline, who brings a video tape from a bar. It shows the victim getting into a fight with bail bondsman Gregory. Sweets ( John Francis Daley ) comments on the man's terrible hairpiece. Caroline explains Gregory has terminal cancer. On the video, Greg hits the much larger Wolf with a pool cue (the first injury to the ribs) and then pulls a gun. The Wolf retreats. Later, Gregory is in the hot seat. He explains to Booth and Caroline that he has about six months to live and doesn't want to die with murder on his conscience. He then plays a recorded conversation from Molly Braverman's cell phone. About 90 minutes ago, she called her husband and said she could meet him. Molly ( Corinne Reilly ) is still helping Charles. Sweets examines a computer grid of the street where the couple was going to meet. He theorizes the Bravermans would drive west (because 87-percent of criminals flee west). Bones says Charles won't have a choice but to stop at a hospital because of the injury he sustained when jumping from the parking garage. Hodgins and Jude, in the meantime, have set up a pair of mock ribs, at which they fire various projectiles. A potato gun "bazooka" is the only weapon breaking the ribs. So what matches the velocity of such an improvised firearm? Either way, Bones is so impressed with Jude that she agrees to appear on his children's show. B&B then get a call. Two people matching the Bravermans' descriptions have checked into an area hospital. They arrive on the scene to find the female bounty hunter, Janet ( Lisa Marcos ), already there. She blocks the door so B&B can't get through. She wants her bounty! Janet then pulls out a shotgun and FIRES. Charles goes down in a heap. "Relax, it's only beanbag gun," Janet explains. Booth's eyes light up. What if Janet shot the Wolf with a beanbag gun, sending the bone from the pool-cue injury into his heart? Janet didn't mean to kill the big guy, but she did. Booth cuffs Janet. Case closed. But not the episode. We see the Jeffersonian set up for an episode of the "science dude" show. Jude introduces the Bone lady ... and Bone emerges wearing a skeleton costume and a big, red tutu. It's hilarious. She leads the children in the "science guy" oath -- which has just about the entire team in tears. Booth is especially impressed.
