Overcoming Obstacles in Assisting Others: How to Conquer Challenges

In the pursuit of extending aid and support to those in need, individuals often encounter various obstacles that can hinder their efforts. However, with determination and innovative approaches, these challenges can be overcome to ensure effective assistance and make a positive impact on the lives of others.

Tips for Dealing with Resistance and Building Empathy

When it comes to helping others and making a positive impact on their lives, it is important to understand that not everyone may be receptive to our efforts. There may be resistance and barriers that prevent us from truly connecting with those we wish to help. However, by employing certain strategies, we can overcome these challenges and build empathy in the process.

One tip for dealing with resistance is to approach the situation with an open mind and a non-judgmental attitude. It is essential to empathize with the feelings and experiences of others, even if we don’t fully understand or agree with them. By suspending our own biases and preconceived notions, we can create a safe space for open dialogue and establish a foundation for mutual understanding.

Another strategy is to actively listen and validate the emotions and concerns of those we are trying to help. Instead of dismissing or disregarding their feelings, we should make an effort to truly hear and acknowledge them. By doing so, we demonstrate respect and compassion, which can help break down barriers and foster a sense of trust between us and the individuals we are assisting.

Building empathy also requires us to educate ourselves and develop a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by the people we want to support. By learning about their experiences, cultures, and backgrounds, we can gain insight into their perspectives and foster a stronger connection. This knowledge not only enhances our ability to provide effective assistance but also helps us tailor our approach to be more culturally sensitive and respectful.

Lastly, it is crucial to approach helping others with humility and a willingness to learn. We should acknowledge that we don’t have all the answers and that the individuals we are assisting are experts of their own lives. By collaborating and involving them in the decision-making process, we empower them and allow their voices to be heard. This inclusive approach not only promotes shared ownership but also helps us build genuine relationships based on trust and equality.

In conclusion, dealing with resistance and building empathy are essential aspects of helping others. By approaching situations with open-mindedness, actively listening, educating ourselves, and practicing humility, we can overcome barriers and establish meaningful connections. These tips not only enhance our ability to make a positive impact on the lives of others but also pave the way for collective growth and understanding.

How Helping Others Can Create a Positive Ripple Effect

How Helping Others Can Create a Positive Ripple Effect

One of the most powerful acts a person can do is to lend a helping hand to others. The act of giving selflessly can have a profound impact not only on the individuals directly involved, but also on the larger community and society as a whole. When we choose to extend kindness and support to others, we set in motion a ripple effect that has the potential to create positive change.

Helping others creates a sense of unity and connection among people. When we come together to help those in need, we build relationships and bridge the gaps that often divide us. This sense of unity can lead to a stronger community, as people are more likely to work together towards common goals when they have experienced the power of collective action.

Furthermore, helping others can inspire and motivate those who witness the act. When others see someone selflessly giving their time and resources to help those in need, it can serve as a reminder of the impact we can all have when we choose to make a difference. This inspiration can create a domino effect, where more and more individuals are compelled to extend a helping hand to others.

Additionally, the act of helping others can have a profound effect on our own sense of well-being and happiness. Studies have shown that when we engage in acts of kindness, our brains release endorphins and oxytocin, which are neurotransmitters that promote feelings of happiness and positivity. By helping others, we not only make a positive impact on their lives, but also enhance our own mental and emotional well-being.

In conclusion, the act of helping others creates a positive ripple effect that extends far beyond the individuals directly involved. 7. Inspirational Story on helping others:

Once upon a time, in a small village surrounded by lush green fields and blooming flowers, there lived a young boy named Rohan. He was known for his kind heart and willingness to help others without expecting anything in return.

Rohan grew up with his parents who were farmers. They taught him the importance of hard work and helping those in need. Every day, Rohan would help his parents in the fields, and after finishing his chores, he would spend time with the villagers.

The villagers adored Rohan for his kind nature and willingness to lend a helping hand. They often shared stories of how he had helped them during difficult times. But little did they know that Rohan’s kindness was not limited to just humans.

One day, a severe storm hit the village and destroyed most of the crops. The villagers were worried about how they would survive without food. Rohan’s parents were also affected by the storm, and they had no other option but to leave their village in search of better opportunities.

Seeing his family and villagers in distress, Rohan knew he had to do something. He remembered how his parents had taught him to help others in need, and he decided to put that lesson into practice.

Rohan went from house to house, asking the villagers if they needed any help. He helped them fix their homes, gather whatever food was left after the storm, and even offered his own food supplies to those who needed it desperately.

However, Rohan’s helping nature did not end there. He ventured into the forest to find wild fruits and berries, which he distributed among the villagers. Some even called him a hero for his selfless acts.

But Rohan remained humble and continued to help without seeking recognition or praise. His kindness was contagious, and soon other villagers joined in to help each other during difficult times.

Slowly but steadily, the village was back on its feet, and the crops were growing again. Everyone in the village had learned an important lesson from Rohan – that helping others not only benefits them but also brings joy and satisfaction to oneself.

Years passed, and Rohan grew up to be a kind-hearted man who continued to help those in need. The villagers never forgot his acts of kindness, and they passed on his lessons to their children and grandchildren.

Rohan’s selfless actions had a lasting impact on the village, and it became known as the village of kind-hearted people who always helped each other. And Rohan’s name was remembered for generations to come as a symbol of kindness and compassion.

From this story, we can learn that helping others is not just about lending a hand during difficult times, but it is also about spreading kindness and making the world a better place. As they say, “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.” So let us all follow Rohan’s example and make helping others a way of life

In our fast-paced and competitive world, the concept of a “helping hand” has become more important than ever before. In simple terms, a helping hand refers to an act of assisting or supporting someone in need. This could be in the form of physical, emotional, or financial support.

One might argue that the idea of extending a helping hand is not new and has been a part of our society for centuries. However, the changing dynamics of our global community have made it even more crucial for individuals to lend a helping hand to those around them.

In today’s world, where people are constantly chasing success and material possessions, there is a growing sense of isolation and loneliness among individuals. This is where the concept of a helping hand comes into play. By reaching out and supporting those in need, we not only make a positive impact on their lives but also create a sense of community and belonging.

Moreover, extending a helping hand is not only beneficial for the receiver, but it also has several benefits for the giver as well. It allows us to step outside of our own problems and focus on someone else’s needs. This can bring a sense of purpose and fulfillment in our lives. Additionally, helping others can also boost our self-esteem and confidence, knowing that we have made a positive difference in someone’s life.

Furthermore, a helping hand can also have a ripple effect. By assisting one individual, we may inspire them to pay it forward and help others in need. This creates a chain reaction of kindness and compassion, ultimately leading to a more caring and supportive society.

In today’s interconnected world, where news of tragedies and disasters spread rapidly, it is easy to feel overwhelmed and helpless. However, by extending a helping hand to those affected, we can make a tangible difference and contribute towards rebuilding communities and lives.

In conclusion, the concept of a helping hand is more relevant now than ever before. It not only benefits individuals in need but also has positive effects on our own well-being and society as a whole. So let us all strive to be someone’s helping hand and create a world where kindness and compassion are the norm rather than the exception. 9. Short Essay on how helping others benefit you:

Helping others is a fundamental human trait that has been ingrained in our society for centuries. It is an act of kindness that not only benefits the recipient, but also brings immense joy and satisfaction to the person who is offering help. In this short essay, we will explore how helping others can have a positive impact on your life.

Firstly, helping others allows us to develop empathy and compassion. When we lend a helping hand to someone in need, we put ourselves in their shoes and try to understand their struggles. This helps us build stronger connections with others and become more understanding individuals. Moreover, by seeing the impact of our actions on others, we learn to appreciate what we have and not take things for granted.

Secondly, helping others can boost our self-esteem and confidence. When we use our skills and knowledge to assist someone, it gives us a sense of purpose and accomplishment. This, in turn, helps us feel more confident about ourselves and our abilities. It also reminds us that we are capable of making a positive impact on others’ lives.

Thirdly, helping others can improve our mental health. It is a well-known fact that acts of kindness can release feel-good hormones in our brain, such as oxytocin and endorphins. These hormones are responsible for making us feel happy and content. By helping others, we can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression levels in ourselves and others around us.

In addition to the above benefits, helping others also allows us to expand our social circle and make meaningful connections. When we volunteer or engage in acts of kindness, we meet like-minded individuals who share the same values as us. This can lead to long-lasting friendships and a sense of belonging.

Lastly, helping others is a powerful way to contribute to society and make a positive impact on the world. By giving back to our communities, we can create a ripple effect of kindness and inspire others to do the same. This can lead to a more empathetic and compassionate society, creating a better world for future generations.

10. Short Essay on Satisfaction Comes from Helping Others:

We’ve all heard the saying, “It’s better to give than receive.” And while it may sound cliché, there is truth to this statement. There is a certain sense of satisfaction that comes from helping others. Whether it be through volunteering, lending a helping hand, or simply being there for someone in need, the act of helping others brings a sense of fulfillment that cannot be replicated by any material possessions.

So why is it that helping others brings us satisfaction? One of the main reasons is that it gives us a sense of purpose. In today’s fast-paced world, we often get caught up in our own lives and forget about the needs of those around us. By taking the time to help someone else, we are reminded that there is more to life than just our own personal pursuits. We are able to make a positive impact on someone else’s life and in turn, feel good about ourselves.

Moreover, helping others allows us to step outside of our comfort zones and gain new perspectives. It’s easy to get stuck in our own routines and thought patterns, but when we help someone else, we are exposed to different ways of thinking and living. This can broaden our understanding of the world and also help us appreciate what we have.

Another aspect of helping others that brings satisfaction is the connections we make with people. When we lend a helping hand or volunteer, we are often working alongside like-minded individuals who share similar values and goals. These shared experiences can lead to meaningful relationships and a sense of belonging.

Furthermore, the act of helping others can also boost our own self-esteem and confidence. By making a positive impact on someone else’s life, we are reminded that we have something valuable to offer. This can give us a sense of purpose and worth that may have been lacking before.

In conclusion, while it may seem counterintuitive, true satisfaction does not come from acquiring material possessions or achieving personal success. It comes from the act of helping others and making a positive impact in their lives. So, let us strive to be kind, empathetic, and selfless individuals who find joy in giving rather than receiving. As Mahatma Gandhi once said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”

Whether it is through small acts of kindness, volunteering my time, or using my skills and knowledge to help those in need, I am always looking for ways to lend a helping hand.

One of the reasons why helping others is my greatest passion is because it allows me to connect with people from all walks of life. I have had the opportunity to work with individuals from different backgrounds, cultures, and experiences, and each interaction has taught me something valuable. By helping others, I am also able to learn and grow as a person.

Furthermore, helping others is not just about making a difference in someone else’s life; it also brings immense fulfillment and happiness in my own life. Knowing that I have made a positive impact, no matter how small, fills me with a sense of purpose and motivates me to continue helping others.

In today’s world, where there is so much negativity and division, I believe that acts of kindness and compassion towards others are more important than ever. My greatest passion for helping others will always be a driving force in my life, and I hope to inspire others to do the same. After all, as Mahatma Gandhi said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”

Lending Hands to Someone is Better than Giving a Dole

  • 28 Jul 2018
  • 11 min read

–Aditya Choppa

Those who are happiest are those who do the most for others. According to Dalai Lama, our prime purpose in life is to help others. Helping each other is what makes us humans special. Compassion and altruism are the basic components of humanness. Even the most hard-hearted person might have helped someone in need at some point of time. Helping others is the fundamental characteristic of humans, but different people do it in different ways. Some tend to donate money to charitable organisations , some people give money to the poor directly, some people volunteer to do social work, while some create work for others. It is important to understand which type of help is most beneficial to humankind. As a Chinese proverb says, "Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime." This essay gives examples of alternative ways of helping people that are more helpful than just donating money.

Recently, Chennai experienced one of the worst floods in over 100 years. Life had come to a standstill. The repercussions were such that almost all aspects of life were affected in the city, from public transport, railways, flights to electricity supply. In such crisis , help poured in from different corners of the world. Many contributed to flood relief fund. But this help couldn't reach the Chennai residents in time as the transportation facilities were derailed. This money could be only used for rehabilitation. But the helping nature of the locals, the various business entities in Chennai and initiatives by tech companies helped immensely in avoiding a major disaster. Individuals opened their houses while schools, movie theatres and marriage halls welcomed families and persons who needed a safe and dry shelter. Facebook initiated a Safety Check feature for Chennai floods, BSNL gave users in Chennai free local and STD calls, Paytm gave residents of Chennai a Rs 30 recharge to help them stay connected during floods, Ola joined hands - and resources - with the Chennai fire department to help residents reach their homes safely and Zomato launched 'Meal for flood relief' wherein people could order free meals for flood victims. Chennai floods made people united and take efforts to combat the disaster. Clearly, the helping hand lent by individuals and different companies helped the Chennai flood victims more than the money donated to the flood relief fund.

This principle can be seen in our day-to-day life too. Many of us tend to give money or food to beggars. This doesn't really help them to get out of poverty. In India, begging is quite often carried out in organized gangs. Beggars have also been known to deliberately maim and disfigure themselves to get more money. In these circumstances, real help would be, to provide some source of livelihood to them, rather than giving them money which incentivises them to continue their lifestyle. It would be more compassionate to buy an item from a street hawker, even if we don't require it, to provide him livelihood . Many of us tend to donate money to different welfare organisations , orphanages, old-age homes, NGOs etc. But some of them could be just scams, while some organisations may waste money on managerial duties instead of actually helping the needy. It would be much more useful if we give clothes, blankets, food or time to these organisations depending on the need. Instead of giving money, it would be much more useful if one can lend his/ her expertise to help others. For example, a teacher can provide free tutions for the poor, a doctor can volunteer some time in a week at a free clinic, a lawyer can provide his legal services to the poor and a software engineer can help in decreasing digital divide. In this way, one can ensure that their contribution directly benefits the people in need.

In democratic states, the governments have a tendency to provide a number of freebies, especially during election year. Loans are waived, electricity is subsidized, water is subsidized, free television and laptops are given and so on. But the need of the hour - better governance, timely public services, corruption free state, good public infrastructure, good business environment, reliable law and order etc - are not provided. If there are no irrigation canals, the subsidized fertilizers are of no use to a farmer in drought years. If there are constant power cuts, the subsidized electricity doesn't help the industries in the area. Providing free education without increasing the number of quality teachers doesn't solve the problems of education. Clearly, doling out money instead of providing good governance is not a step in the right direction.

Even in international relations, the utility of rendering a helping hand rather than giving aid in money can be recognized. America has been giving billions of dollars in aid to Pakistan to keep a lid on the Taliban issue. Much of the American money is not making its way to frontline Pakistani units. Money has been diverted to help finance weapons designed to counter India, not Al Qaeda or the Taliban. This is an illustration of how aid money can be wrongly utilized and in fact can be counter-productive to the intended purpose. In contrast, India's aid to Africa is quite productive as it contributes by supporting human resource development, building Pan African e-network which now connects 48 African countries, increasing foreign direct investment, sending peacekeeping forces etc. Clearly, there is larger scope for misuse of financial aid than the aid provided in kind. Projects like developing roads, developing human resources, constructing dams, providing medical services in countries like Afghanistan will nnot only ensure that aid has reached the deserving people, but it will also increase the goodwill towards the country providing aid. This principle can be used in Climate Change negotiations too. More than the money given for the less developed countries to counter climate change, giving them technology that enables development at lower carbon emissions will help them more. This has to be recognized and focus should be on transfer of technology rather than on increasing money for Green Climate Fund (GCF).

It is not that money and financial resources are unimportant, in fact they are essential part for success of most of the humanitarian efforts. While a major disaster during the Chennai floods was averted due to the helping nature of the locals, the rehabilitation was possible because of the money donated by philanthropic people. While some of the beggars are part of an organized gang, there are a lot of people languishing in poverty who do need financial assistance. Social security net for the poor is essential even in developed countries. Many under-developed and developing countries do need aid money, so that the help received can be utilised in accordance to the needs at ground level. Clearly, money is intrinsic part of most of the help being given, but one should recognize that there is much more to helping others than just providing money. Doling out money should not become the de facto method of helping others. There are many more valuable ways in which one can help others. Giving financial help is just one of the ways.

Helping others should be the primary motivation of any human being. The help need not always be in the form of donating money. Rendering a helping hand through offering services or expertise is much more valuable. Moreover, one should recognize the kind of help that is required. Different circumstances require different kinds of help. In the example of Chennai floods, the most appropriate help at that time was to provide shelter and food, which could be arranged at a short notice, thanks to the helping nature of Chennaites. In most circumstances, one should help people help themselves. As Henry Ford has said, "Time and money spent in helping men to do more for themselves is far better than mere giving".

Reflections: A Helping Hand…

“The glory of friendship is not the outstretched hand, nor the kindly smile, nor the joy of companionship; it’s the spiritual inspiration that comes to one when he discovers that someone else believes in him and is willing to trust him with his friend.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

Reflections: A Helping Hand… The harpist ‘s hand

I’ve been thinking about hands lately… As all those brilliant posts on “Hands,” for the photo challenge, fly through the blogosphere, we get a moment to reflect on the subject. What do we appreciate most about our hands? I’ve been using mine a lot of late as I continue to play catch up with your blog posts, tinker around the house, write a lot and pray… Also as gardening season is upon us, getting our hands in the earth and doing some weeding and planting will do us all some good. But the point of this post is really about the power of a helping hand; the hand that helps and uplifts another. How often do we extend our hand? When do we reach out to others for help? Hariprasad’s uplifting, meditative music will set the right mood as you read this. Below, I will share a story about the power of a helping hand…

“Bear in mind that the wonderful things you learn in your schools are the work of many generations. All this is put in your hands as your inheritance in order that you may receive it, honor it, add to it, and one day faithfully hand it on to your children.” Albert Einstein

Reflections: A Helping Hand… The Buddha ‘s hands ( Kamakura Daibutsu )

A story about hands that has stayed with me is a popular one you might have heard too. One of my teachers shared it. Once, a man had a dream in which he found himself in hell. The hell of his dream was not made of fire and brimstone but of a banquet table filled to the brim with all his favorite foods. He was permitted to eat the food as long as he used an extra long spoon that was impossible to lift and sheer hell to feed with. In the dream, he and many others sat at the banquet table weeping and lamenting the tragedy of being in the presence of food they could not feed themselves. They cried bitterly, as they sat and stared at all their favorite foods go to waste, because they couldn’t lift that gigantic spoon to feed themselves a morsel of manna. He was shocked and joined in the lamentations. When he woke from this nightmare, he sat and pondered it. More on the story below!

“To see a world in a grain of sand and heaven in a wild flower Hold infinity in the palms of your hand and eternity in an hour.” William Blake

essay on helping hands

Reflections: A Helping Hand… helping hands

The next night, he fell asleep and found himself in the same place. We may call it a modified hell, heaven, or the place where care meets compassion and actions bear fruit. Again, he was presented with the banquet of exquisite foods, and the challenge to eat it with the extra long and equally heavy spoon. As the man approached the banquet table, he suddenly stopped, gasped, blinked his eyes, and then rubbed them to be sure he wasn’t hallucinating. He blinked because the sight before him made him weep … not sadly but joyfully.  What did he see? Around the banquet table sat many of the same people from the night before. They had figured out that if each of them joined forces with others, lifted the spoon and took turns picking up the delicious food, they could serve and feed each other and not starve. So he watched them feed each other and soon joined in, taking his place at the table and extending a hand to lift that spoon and feed his fellow man. By extending a helping hand in what could have been a hellish situation … to starve in the presence of abundance … they learned a profound lesson that remains a mystery to the greedy on this earth. What lesson did they learn? Ponder it. May we all be blessed by the divine within and without.

What about you? What are your thoughts? Do you need a helping hand? When do you extend a helping hand? What helps you remember to share and care? What impact might it have on your life? Do share! Thank you. 😉

*Please bear with me as I continue to catch up on your blogs and commenting… Thank you all for your patience! 🙂

Positive Motivation Tip: Extend a hand to help another… you never know when you’d need one too.

related to the topic HELPING HANDS my reflections are often wandering to the subject immigration – emigration – migration – as written today: AFRICAN immigrants

TY for your feedback and I have left a comment on your post on the boat people from the continent… It’s a complex situation with many players; overt and covert.

Beautiful! It made me remember being given a little child’s harp when I was around 7!

Do you still play it? Such a beautiful instrument. 😉

No – I don’t even know what happened to it. I want to find one now!

Go for it then! 🙂

Like yourself, I play catch up with the blogs I follow. It always seem to me that I choose to catch up with yours right when I need it most. I have a lot of hands helping me right now in my job search and am so grateful. I’m using my hands more and more for my photography. My garden is growing like a wild thing because of the dirt on my hands. And it is those held, busy, dirty hands that write this note of thanks :).

Beautiful… TY for sharing your gratitude! 🙂

You’re welcome 🙂

Reblogged this on mycreativevoice and commented: The perfect reminder of how giving and receiving a helping hand makes our world better.

TY also for the re-blog! Appreciated. 😉

What a lovely interpretation of ‘Hands’!

TY Madhu! The photo challenge got me thinking and after I completed mine, I felt a pull to explore the topic again in another way. 🙂

I’ve always been hesitant to ask for a helping hand but always ready willing and able to give it. I’m getting better at receiving. b

Good for you! It is a dilemma for some to give and receive but we need both. 🙂

Helping hands moved by loving hearts. A helping hand motivated by a friend who believes in you and trusts you. Very moving and heavenly, indeed!

TY Granbee! I love your interpretation too! 🙂

I enjoyed the “hands posts” more than any others, I think! Our hands are so connected to our personalities. We talk with our hands, comfort with our hands and conversely some hurt with hands. Maybe they express what comes from our heart. I love the quotes you’ve shared…especially the Einstein quote. 🙂 Debra

TY Debra! I enjoyed it too but not sure it was as great a hit with my overall readers. Perhaps it is a subject much covered? IDK but enjoyed it too. TY! 🙂

What wonderful music by Raag. Thanks

TY Bluebee! Hariprasad is a genius and has won many awards for his skill on the bansuri, the Indian bamboo flute.

Again Liz, as I commented in your other post. I feel the need to reach out. To see if someone is alright. But I am afraid. I feel safe not doing so. Sad and selfish. Like I am not doing what a compassion man would do. I thank you for this post. It is encouraging. Even if I do not act directly, I will send prayers to my friend.

Please reach out… even if it is to leave a simple message saying “I am thinking of you! ” If you sense their pain then act… don’t leave it be as spirit might be calling you to intervene or show your concern/support for their well-being. Go for it without expectations of the outcome. Prayers and blessings!

Beautiful thoughts and the music of Hariprasad Chaurasia – Raag Shivanjali is so haunting!

Yes, TY! He is an amazing musician and I love this raag… it is haunting. 😉

I’m lending a helping hand – as much as I can – at the moment trying to get our government to free a young pregnant mother from detention. Terrible situation. I have to be careful where I direct my energies, as I have so little time available these days.

Take it easy Robin… Perhaps my latest post on emotional vampires would help with your choices. It is great to help but self care is imperative… Sorry to read about the young lady and pray it gets resolved for her too. TY! 🙂

Yes, I know I have to be careful. And I am. No protest marches for me, I am just lending my voice. And my writing.

' src=

Inspiring with a so much to give. We are blessed in so many ways thus we also need to share those blessings. It starts with a generous heart, and the hand follows. The more we give in love and faith, the more we move one step closer to heaven.

So true and I wish all will learn the blessing of that statement… “The more we give in love and faith, the more we move one step closer to heaven. ” TY! 🙂

The Importance of a Helping Hand in Education and in Life

This paper discusses the importance of incorporating personal assistance into interventions aimed at improving long-term education and labor market success. While existing research demonstrates the cost-effectiveness of low-touch behavioral nudges, this paper argues that the dynamic nature of human capital accumulation requires sustained habits over time. To foster better habits, social connections are critical for encouraging enduring effort and intrinsic motivation. The paper showcases examples from various stages of human capital accumulation, including early childhood, adolescence, and adulthood, in which interventions that incorporate personal assistance substantially out-perform less intensive nudges. We underscore the importance of interactive support, guidance, and motivation in facilitating significant progress and explore the challenges associated with implementing cost-effective policies to provide such assistance.

This paper came about in part from a presentation for the David and Cecilia Ting BMO lecture series at Simon Fraser University. We received very helpful feedback from participants at the CIRANO workshop on Behavioral and Experimental Economics for Innovative Policy Making in memory of Claude Montmarquette. We also thank Marigen Narea, Gonzalo Gallardo and Maria Paz Monge for their helpful feedback, and funding from FONDECYT Regular, grant number 1220044. The views expressed herein are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the views of the National Bureau of Economic Research.

Henry Ford once said, "Life is a series of experiences, each of which makes us bigger, even Though its is hard to realize this. For the world was built to develop .              character, and we must learn that the setbacks and grief's which we endure help us in our marching onward. Personally, I agree with this statement because I, myself have .              experienced certain things that I now realize have made me the person that I am today and have also taught me about the world. Over the years, I have volunteered in many places, but mostly at hospitals in the intensive care unit. Not too long ago did I realize that I enjoyed caring for others and that it had become a hobby of mine. Of all the things that I could have had as a hobby, I chose nursing people back to health.              .              During my pre-teen years, I began to volunteer at St. Francis Medical Center, alongside my mother, who worked there as a nurse. My mother was the person who encouraged me to become a volunteer worker, but little did she know that I dreaded the fact of going with her. Every weekend I would go with her and perform my assigned duties sluggishly. After a few weeks, my mother noticed that I did not like volunteering at the hospital. As a result, she told me that it was up to me to decide on whether or not I wanted to continue volunteering at St. Francis. Surprisingly enough, I was saddened when she said this to me and this was when I discovered that I wanted to be of assistance to others. Thus, I continued to assist the employer, patients, and visitors at the hospital.              .              While working at St. Francis, I witnessed many astonishing things. For the first time in my life, I saw the incredible miracle of birth. A woman had gone into labor and my help was needed, so I was called into the labor and delivery room. I was taken aback when the woman gave birth to a baby boy. I was ecstatic when the mother said that I have done a good job I keeping her relaxed.

Tick… Tock… Tick… That was all he heard in the hospital’s main room. He had been visiting the same hospital for the fifty-fourth day in a row, climbing the stairs to the 3rd floor. He had memorized the place as if it was his own home, there are 60 steps to reach the 3rd floor, on the left side of the waiting room was the hospital's pharmacy and on the right, was another waiting room for adults. Apprehension had swept through his mind every second he was standing in the hospital. The waiting room was absolutely noiseless, you could hear the clock tick away every second.

He was visiting his grandmother at the exact same time as when he first came here, after learning his grandmother had been diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. He sat in a crusty, tatt

ered chair, biting his fingernails, which had slowly become a habit due to being in the hospital for fifty-four days straight. Finally, he was able to enter his grandmother’s room, feeling as if the time had gone in slow motion. She laid on the freezing, dense hospital bed, emotionless as if her soul had left her body.

On her fifty-fourth day of being treated, he had been given the most horrifying news. The physician had stated that her body had slowly started to give up and become debilitated. The physician reviewed her results and had told him that they had no more options the hospital could provide. Her body began to shake and the palms of her hands began to sweat as she was told the news. Terror was written all over her face.

Every day before he left

his grandmother would whisper to his ear, “Please… Please end my life”. He could tell that she wanted to die now and that his grandmother wanted to be put out of her misery. He had considered assisted suicide abundant times but would hate to watch another family member suffer from extensive agony. What will he do?

I fell in love with this story and I soon began to wonder: How does assisting with suicide affect a physician’s mental health? I chose my topic about assisted suicide because I am interested in how assisted suicide is performed and how it differs from euthanasia. I first heard about assisted suicide on my way to school. Just like any other ordinary morning, I was late, as always. Stumbling to put on my shoes as I got into the car, my father turned on the radio and my brother and I were listening to an interview.

Not just any tedious interview, but it happened to be between a news reporter and a doctor. Half asleep, I was already dead inside, feeling incredibly exhausted. I was slowly falling back asleep until I heard the word suicide. “Suicide?” I whispered. The interview was extremely depressing and heavy, as the doctor did not favor assisted suicide and has never enjoyed performing it on patients. The doctor was explaining how she had to execute this situation and believed that it was necessary in some cases.

I was drawn in. Suicide was the exact opposite of happiness. It was as if children were carving pumpkins in the fall and scraping the insides out. The feeling of emptiness washed numerous emotions towards me. I felt those feelings as

I listened to the interview. I gradually became more and more attentive to the topic.Throughout the interview, I gathered negative thoughts, believing the patient had given up hope of getting better. During class on that day, I researched the topic and realized, assisted suicide is illegal everywhere, except for a handful of states and countries.

Therefore, I chose my topic because of an interview between a reporter and a doctor talking about assisted suicide. This topic interests me because this form of suicide is only legal in a few states. Assisted suicide is one of the most brought up topics and is debated all over the world. My interest stems from always wanting to be a doctor growing up and this brings an emotional feeling to my chest. As a human being, we are given choices in life that can determine what may happen in the future.

As I began my I-search topic, my first interest was on gene editing, slowly realizing that I knew absolutely nothing about it. Eventually, I decided to do my topic about dance, later finding out there were too little amounts of sources to make a satisfactory research topic. At last, I decided to choose my I-search about assisted suicide because of my curiosity to learn more about its effects on the world. My first question started off as, “How does assisted suicide affect society?” At first, I believed I made the million dollar question until I received my family’s opinion.

Soon I began to realize that my question was way too broad and would only contain opinions from others. After a decent amount of days thinking, I formed another research question, “How

does assisting with suicide affect a physician’s mental health?” I already know that assisted suicide became legal in California in 2016, but should a terminally ill patient have the right to decide when they want to die? I soon began to think of more questions, like what is the difference between assisted suicide and euthanasia?

What are the pros and cons of assisted suicide? How many states are assisted suicide legal? I believe that as a person, this form of suicide is not right, but it is needed in some situations. I hope to learn how assisted suicide is requested and performed on a patient. I will find information about this form of suicide through reading books and looking through websites. The perfect people to interview for this project would be a physician at the local hospitals around me. I hope to discover an immense amount of information about assisted suicide and how it affects our society.

Fires burn in a street with a vehicle also alight in front of ambulances and police officers.

By Esther Bintliff and Eve Sampson

Esther Bintliff reported from London, and Eve Sampson from New York.

Violent unrest has erupted in several towns and cities in Britain in recent days, and further disorder broke out on Saturday as far-right agitators gathered in demonstrations around the country.

The violence has been driven by online disinformation and extremist right-wing groups intent on creating disorder after a deadly knife attack on a children’s event in northwestern England, experts said.

A range of far-right factions and individuals, including neo-Nazis, violent soccer fans and anti-Muslim campaigners, have promoted and taken part in the unrest, which has also been stoked by online influencers .

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has vowed to deploy additional police officers to crack down on the disorder. “This is not a protest that has got out of hand,” he said on Thursday. “It is a group of individuals who are absolutely bent on violence.”

Here is what we know about the unrest and some of those involved.

Where have riots taken place?

The first riot took place on Tuesday evening in Southport, a town in northwestern England, after a deadly stabbing attack the previous day at a children’s dance and yoga class. Three girls died of their injuries, and eight other children and two adults were wounded.

The suspect, Axel Rudakubana , was born in Britain, but in the hours after the attack, disinformation about his identity — including the false claim that he was an undocumented migrant — spread rapidly online . Far-right activists used messaging apps including Telegram and X to urge people to take to the streets.
