It’s essential for reinforcing learned concepts and enhancing general language proficiency.

Homework Ideas for ESL Students

ESL students need more than just traditional classroom lessons.

Homework is a vital part of their language development and serves as a bridge between acquired knowledge and practical application.

The following homework ideas are designed to captivate students’ interest, deepen their understanding, and enhance their fluency in English in the classroom and real-life situations.

Let’s dive into these creative and effective homework strategies that promise a richer, more interactive language learning experience:

1. Daily Journaling

This is a great idea to engage students by embracing the habit of maintaining a daily journal.

Writing about their daily experiences, emotions, thoughts, or selected topics can sharpen their writing skills while learning to articulate their feelings and ideas in English.

This journaling process serves a dual purpose: it strengthens their grasp of the language and provides a personal space for self-expression.

As they regularly engage with this practice, English becomes an integral part of their daily routine and will facilitate a more natural and fluent use of the language in their everyday lives.

This activity bolsters their linguistic abilities and fosters a deeper connection with English as a medium of personal reflection and expression.

2. Making Flashcards

Students can develop their vocabulary skills through the classic and effective method of creating flashcards.

This exercise involves students writing down new words and their meanings on individual cards.

They can add illustrations or use words in sentences to make the learning process more engaging and impactful.

This visual and contextual approach helps better retain and understand new vocabulary.

By regularly reviewing these flashcards, students can gradually build a robust vocabulary base, which is essential for fluency in English.

This method will reinforce their word knowledge and encourage active engagement with the language, making vocabulary learning a more interactive and enjoyable experience.

Flashcards are suitable for students of all ages and can be fun.

3. Reading Comprehension Exercises

Immerse more advanced students in the world of English reading by assigning short stories or articles complemented by comprehension questions.

This exercise is pivotal in enhancing their reading skills and deepening their understanding of various contexts in English.

Students encounter different writing styles, vocabularies, and themes by engaging with diverse texts, enriching their language experience.

The follow-up questions serve to test their understanding and encourage critical thinking about the content.

This approach bolsters their ability to comprehend English texts and stimulates their analytical skills, making them more adept at interpreting and engaging with the language in its written form.

Such reading exercises are fundamental in helping students gain confidence and proficiency in navigating English literature and media.

4. Podcasts and Songs

Teachers can offer listening exercises in their curriculums by using English podcasts and songs.

This method exposes students to a variety of accents, speaking speeds, and vocabulary in a natural context.

After listening, students can engage in activities like writing summaries or answering questions about what they heard.

These post-listening tasks are crucial for enhancing their comprehension and retention.

This approach is great at improving listening skills while making the learning process more enjoyable and relatable.

By regularly interacting with authentic English content, students develop a better ear for the language and learn to appreciate its rhythm and nuances in different forms of media.

This not only aids in language acquisition but also connects them culturally to the English-speaking world.

This task provides them with a platform to practice speaking about a variety of topics in English.

Whether they choose to talk about their daily life, share opinions on current events, or discuss their hobbies, these video diaries offer a unique opportunity for students to engage actively with the language.

This activity not only improves their spoken English skills but also significantly boosts their confidence in using the language.

It helps them to overcome any hesitation or fear of speaking by providing a safe, personal space to express themselves.

The process of recording and watching their own videos can also be a powerful tool for self-evaluation and progress tracking.

This innovative approach to language learning empowers students to become more fluent and self-assured English speakers.

6. Role-play in Real-world Scenarios

Ask your students to prepare role-plays that mimic real-world scenarios, such as shopping, ordering food, or making appointments.

This practical approach to learning takes them beyond the confines of traditional classroom exercises and immerses them in everyday situations. T

Through role-playing, students get to practice conversational English in a structured yet dynamic context.

It allows them to apply their language skills in practical situations, enhancing their ability to communicate effectively in real-life settings.

This method is particularly effective in familiarizing them with common phrases and vocabulary used in daily interactions.

Additionally, role-playing can be a fun and interactive way to learn, helping to reduce the anxiety often associated with speaking a new language.

By engaging in these simulated experiences, students gain confidence and fluency, which are crucial for their overall language development.

This methodical approach allows students to focus on one aspect of grammar at a time, ensuring a thorough grasp of each concept.

Such targeted exercises help correct common mistakes and deepen their comprehension of the language’s structure.

By consistently working through these grammar worksheets, students build a strong grammatical foundation, which is vital for effective English communication.

As students play, they receive immediate feedback on their performance, which helps reinforce correct usage and understanding.

Choosing books that are appropriate for their language level, the book club encourages students to dive into stories and themes, expanding their vocabulary and comprehension.

Discussing the book with their peers allows them to share perspectives, articulate their thoughts, and engage in meaningful conversations in English.

This interactive and social approach to learning also builds a sense of community among the students, making English learning a shared and enjoyable experience.

The book club thus becomes a platform for growth, not just in language proficiency but also in cognitive and social skills.

10. Pen Pal Program

The tenth great homework idea for ESL students is to start a pen pal program with English-speaking individuals from different parts of the world.

This initiative provides a unique opportunity for students to engage in regular written communication with native English speakers.

Through exchanging letters or emails, students practice their writing skills in a real-world context, learning to express their thoughts and ideas clearly in English.

This regular interaction not only improves their language proficiency but also offers valuable insights into different cultures and lifestyles, enhancing their cultural understanding and global awareness.

The pen pal program is more than just a language exercise; it’s a bridge that connects students across cultures, promoting international friendships and broadening their perspectives.

This kind of cultural exchange can be a highly rewarding and motivating experience, encouraging students to apply their language skills in meaningful and authentic interactions.

However, some families find that too much screen time, even educational screen time, causes more problems than it solves . This is especially true among elementary age kiddos. I always noticed a decline in behavior in my own kids after a screen heavy day.

Homeschool workbooks allow you to teach or review grade-level-appropriate material with your kids.

When choosing homeschool workbooks keep a few considerations in mind:

  • Do you want one workbook to cover multiple subjects?
  • Do you want new teaching or just review?
  • Are colorful pages important to you?
  • Will the workbook be used as a full curriculum or as a supplement?

Welcome! My name is Jennifer. I am a teacher at heart. Before my children were born I was a public school teacher. Now, I am a homeschooling mom of two.

Hi there, I have a 10 year old boy who is super smart – he can do very complex math problems in his head, but absolutely HATES writing! Any suggestions for a workbook he might enjoy? He enjoys gaming, has a short attention span and likes to be moving…all the time! LOL Hard to get him to focus and get the work done.

Suggestions?

He might enjoy the workbook/journal Revolting Writing by Jennifer Cabrera. I haven’t used this one, but I think my son would like it and our sons sound similar. 🙂

10 Best Chinese Workbooks for Language Learners

This article may contain affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. For full information, please see the disclaimer  here .

As the age-old saying goes: Practice makes perfect. This is especially true when it comes to learning new languages like Chinese/Mandarin. While learning through Chinese learning apps or tuning in to Chinese podcasts is fun, it is only through constant practice that you can truly master the language.

Girl using Chinese workbook

To help you out, here are 10 of the best Chinese workbooks for language learners that even native speakers sometimes secretly use!

1. HSK Standard Course (Series)

HSK Standard Course 1 SET - Textbook +Workbook (Chinese and English Edition)

  • Jiang Liping (Author)
  • Simplified Chinese (Publication Language)
  • 12/12/2018 (Publication Date) – Beijing Language & Culture University Press (Publisher)

When it comes to the best Chinese workbooks to help practice and improve your Mandarin,  the HSK Standard Course is in fact, THE gold standard. After all, the Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi is literally the standardized test that is used to determine the efficiency of non-native speakers in China!

Start with the HSK 1 textbook and workbook. First, use the textbook to build a solid foundation in beginner-level Mandarin. Learn the basics of reading and writing, and expand your vocabulary with essential words and phrases using audio recordings.

Then, make use of the accompanying workbook to review the lessons and practice until you’re comfortable moving on to the next level. As a native speaker, there isn’t any Mandarin workbook that I recommend more than this series.

This workbook is best for:

  • Building a holistic understanding of Mandarin
  • Reading and writing practice
  • Revising vocabulary

2. Chinese Made Easier

Chinese Made Easier Workbook (4)

  • unknown author (Author)

I’m not gonna lie, out of all the Chinese workbooks on this list, Chinese Made Easier reminds me the most of the workbooks I used to use during my childhood. As emphasized in the name, this textbook-workbook combo focuses on the most fundamental aspects of Mandarin.

Expect topics such as self-introduction, telling the time, and more in the textbook. You’ll pick up important vocabulary and certain grammatical rules as you flip through the pages of this elementary yet essential book.

Once you’re done, switch over to the activity sheets in the workbook to review what you’ve learned.

  • Building a strong foundation in basic Mandarin
  • Learners who prefer a more simple, straightforward approach
  • Practicing basic functional Mandarin

3. New Practical Chinese Reader

New Practical Chinese Reader, Vol. 1: Workbook (W/MP3), 2nd Edition (English and Mandarin Chinese Edition)

  • Liu Xun (Author)
  • English (Publication Language)
  • 140 Pages – 01/01/2010 (Publication Date) – BLCUP (Publisher)

New Practical Chinese Reader is another one of those Chinese workbooks that come attached to an accompanying textbook . As the name suggests, this Chinese textbook for beginners emphasizes the most practical parts of the language.

Over the six volumes of the textbook, you’ll learn the basics of Mandarin sentence structure, new vocabulary, conversational nuances, and even Chinese idioms. The lessons are designed to increase in difficulty as you progress in proficiency, providing a decent challenge even for intermediate learners.

This New Practical Chinese Reader workbook is, unsurprisingly, best used alongside the textbook as each exercise is connected with a corresponding lesson. They range from writing and reading comprehension to grammar exercises.

  • Learning and practicing functional Mandarin
  • Progressing from beginner to intermediate proficiency
  • Reviewing several aspects of Mandarin in one session

4. Integrated Chinese (4th Edition)

Integrated Chinese 4th Edition, Volume 1 Workbook (Simplified Chinese) (English and Chinese Edition)

  • Yuehua Liu (Author)
  • 198 Pages – 11/01/2017 (Publication Date) – Cheng & Tsui (Publisher)

Integrated Chinese is another one of the most trusted Chinese textbooks on the market. The Integrated Chinese workbook is just as popular as a choice for non-native speakers to practice Mandarin.

Like the textbook which accompanies it, this Chinese workbook focuses on core language skills that are designed to help learners achieve fluency faster. There are plenty of reading and writing exercises, most of which come in the form of listening exercises.

More importantly, there are also exercises on Hanyu Pinyin and tone to help beginners quickly grasp the complicated nuances of speaking Mandarin. What’s more, some of the questions are open-ended ones, which helps learners personalize and internalize their answers in Mandarin.

  • Practicing Hanyu Pinyin and reading
  • Learning how to think in Mandarin
  • Getting used to writing Mandarin characters

5. Colloquial Chinese

Colloquial Chinese (Colloquial Series)

  • Kan, Qian (Author)
  • 438 Pages – 01/26/2021 (Publication Date) – Routledge (Publisher)

Even though Colloquial Chinese isn’t strictly a Chinese workbook (it is a textbook with plenty of exercises), I have to include this one because of how well-rounded it is as a learning resource for beginners.

The main strength of the textbook is that it teaches you the most basic yet essential Chinese vocabulary that is commonly used in daily conversations. It also exposes the reader to fun facts about modern Mandarin slang terms.

The exercises in this book, on the other hand, focus on grammar and listening exercises. Since all these go hand-in-hand with each other, Colloquial Chinese presents itself as a practical Chinese workbook for beginners that helps learners quickly get accustomed to reading, writing, and speaking Mandarin.

  • Learning an array of essential Mandarin words
  • Mastering the correct way to use certain phrases
  • Honing your Mandarin listening skills

6. Modern Mandarin Chinese Grammar Workbook

Modern Mandarin Chinese Grammar Workbook

  • Ross, Claudia (Author)
  • 364 Pages – 07/28/2014 (Publication Date) – Routledge (Publisher)

Compared to vocabulary and writing, Chinese grammar books are quite rare. The same goes for Chinese grammar workbooks. However, don’t fret, because there is indeed one such book that can help meet all your Chinese grammar needs: Modern Mandarin Chinese Grammar .

Known as one of the best Chinese textbooks to help learners break down complex topics like sentence structure, speech patterns, and more. The tie-in workbook reinforces the lessons in the textbook, providing ample opportunities for you to practice forming proper sentences in various scenarios.

If your goal is to speak proudly like a native speaker one day, then this is arguably one of the most essential Chinese workbooks you need to get!

  • Mastering Chinese sentence structure and grammar
  • Practicing proper speech patterns

7. Fundamentals of Chinese Characters

Fundamentals of Chinese Characters

  • Yin, John Jing-hua (Author)
  • 401 Pages – 05/20/2006 (Publication Date) – Yale University Press (Publisher)

As most native speakers will agree, the first step to mastering Mandarin is improving your vocabulary. One of the best Chinese workbooks in that regard is this gem from Yale University Press.

To be fair, it is not strictly a Chinese character workbook. Instead, it is an essential book of the most common Chinese characters in the language, and weaved in between the many lessons are interactive exercises that help you quickly learn and recognize these words.

As you better understand the morphology of Mandarin characters, the exercises help you get a practical sense of how to use these words better, helping you quickly expand your word bank.

  • Memorizing commonly-used Mandarin characters
  • Learning how to properly use essential vocabulary
  • Mastering how to write basic Chinese characters

8. Basic Mandarin Chinese – Reading & Writing

Basic Mandarin Chinese - Reading & Writing Practice Book: A Workbook for Beginning Learners of Written Chinese (Audio Recordings & Printable Flash Cards Included) (Basic Chinese)

  • Kubler, Cornelius C. (Author)
  • 224 Pages – 10/17/2017 (Publication Date) – Tuttle Publishing (Publisher)

Even though there is in fact a Basic Mandarin Chinese textbook, this Chinese character workbook is actually one of the few of its kind that can actually be effectively used on its own.

There are plenty of practice guides, both in the form of written and audio exercises in the book. The aim is to get you comfortable with over 200 of the most basic Chinese characters and use them in the correct way.

You’ll learn to write each character, stroke by stroke, read it in the correct tone, translate it, and use it in the correct conversational context. By the end of the book, you’ll also be able to easily identify radicals ( bushou ) which will be a great help for looking up new words in the dictionary later on.

  • Learning the most important Chinese words in daily conversation
  • Mastering the concept of Chinese radical
  • Translation practice

9. Easy Peasy Chinese Workbook

Easy Peasy Chinese Workbook: Mandarin Chinese Practice for Beginners

  • Greenwood, Elinor (Author)
  • 128 Pages – 08/03/2015 (Publication Date) – DK Children (Publisher)

While Easy Peasy Chinese is a holistic Chinese textbook for beginners, its corresponding workbook leans slightly more toward the vocabulary aspect of Mandarin.

It focuses on helping learners master different character strokes and memorize everyday words used in conversations. As you work on the exercises alongside studying with the textbook, you’ll find that Easy Peasy Chinese is actually quite a decent Chinese character workbook that makes it easy to remember what you’ve learned.

While it may be a little too elementary for intermediate learners, it’s certainly one of the best Chinese workbooks for those who are just starting out in the language!

  • Practicing writing Chinese characters in the right sequence
  • Memorizing basic vocabulary and phrases

10. Practical Audio-Visual Chinese Workbook

Practical Audio-Visual Chinese Student's Workbook 1 2nd Edition (Chinese and English Edition)

  • Practical Audio-Visual Chinese Student’s Workbook 1
  • Practical Audio-Visual Chinese
  • Chinese (Publication Language)
  • 10/01/2008 (Publication Date) – Zheng Zhong/ Tsai Fong Books (Publisher)

Most Chinese vocabulary workbooks try to get learners to understand how certain words can be used in a sentence. This textbook/workbook tie-up , however, dives deeper by providing in-depth explanations about each character and teaching learners how to use every one of them in sample sentences.

Once you’re familiar with the range of vocabulary in the textbook, it’s time to transfer over to the activity sheets and try constructing sentences of your own. It’s a great challenge to help non-native learners quickly grasp sentence-making in Mandarin.

That said, take note that this book uses Traditional Mandarin characters. While it’s fun learning to transcribe between Simplified and Traditional Mandarin once you reach a certain level of proficiency, I do recommend beginners to look elsewhere for Chinese character workbooks.

  • A deep dive into Chinese vocabulary
  • Learning to read Traditional Chinese characters

Bonus: Tian Zi Ge Books

Chinese Writing Practice Book: Tian Zi Ge Chinese Character Notebook - 120 Pages - Practice Writing Chinese Exercise Book for Mandarin Handwriting Characters - Kids and Adults

  • Press, Red Tiger (Author)
  • 120 Pages – 01/13/2020 (Publication Date) – Independently published (Publisher)

Fun fact: Did you know that all Chinese characters, even the most complex ones, can essentially be broken up into four distinct sections? That’s why most Chinese workbooks that offer writing practice come with these boxes with intersecting lines in the middle.

The squares are meant to help you write Chinese characters using proper strokes and sequences and can be used for both normal writing practice and Chinese calligraphy. Rather than view them as workbooks though, I recommend getting one for some therapeutic Chinese writing practice. I suggest figuring out your Chinese name, and learning how to write that first!

And there you have it: 10 of the best Chinese workbooks for language learners. Of course, before you can even start practicing Mandarin, you need to learn the language first! I suggest starting with these Chinese textbooks or other books to learn Chinese ! Better yet, check out this list of the best Chinese learning resources !

Language Arts Level 3

Academic year language arts.

The third level course builds the foundations students need to become independent problem solvers in language arts. Over the course of the year, students explore ancient Greece while developing targeted reading, writing, critical thinking, and grammar skills.

The course is divided into four quarters.

In the first quarter, students read Greek myths while they create their own mythological stories, learning the craft of narrative .

In the second quarter, we extend our study of Greek mythology by exploring the history of ancient Athens. Through this lens, students learn about the practice of history and produce an argument about Socrates, developing skills for reading and writing persuasive nonfiction .

In the third quarter, students are introduced to Greek theater, which becomes a platform for writing and staging their own plays .

Finally, in the fourth quarter, students embark on Homer's Odyssey, reading adaptations of the original stories while developing sentence-building , research , and narrative writing skills.

All of the projects, readings, and activities in the class are designed to foster reading, writing, critical thinking, and public speaking skills at a level that is appropriately challenging.

What happens in class?

Each unit of Language Arts Level 3 is framed as an overarching language arts problem that students need to solve. In the course of solving this problem, students learn and apply skills across the spectrum of language arts: reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, interpretation, and critical thinking. Each day of class includes a blend of the following types of activities:

  • A critical reading and discussion component that introduces students to strategies for understanding and interpreting challenging reading material, and gives them practice engaging in a collaborative discussion with their teacher and classmates.
  • A writing component, where students practice writing and grammar skills related to the text they explored at the beginning of class.
  • A puzzle or performance component, where students engage in a challenging puzzle, class game, or performance to develop a deeper understanding of the day's topics.

Students should expect to spend about 1-2 hours on homework every week. Homework will include practicing the reading, writing, and grammar skills covered in class, working on ongoing writing projects, and completing reading assignments. Students are expected to read independently throughout the year from assigned novels and nonfiction books. Students will take weekly reading quizzes on the course homepage to ensure that they are keeping up with the reading.

Teacher Feedback

Students will receive direct, oral feedback from their teacher during class. This in-person feedback is key in helping students revise and improve their writing while they are working on the writing projects. At the end of each writing project, students will submit their work to receive evaluative written feedback from their teacher.

Students will take four in-class exams, one at the end of each quarter: weeks 9, 18, 27, and 36. Exams will focus on the grammar, vocabulary, reading, and writing skills students are learning in class. Each exam day will also include time for students to present their writing project for that quarter.

Course Texts

  • Beast Academy Language Arts Practice Book 3A
  • Beast Academy Language Arts Practice Book 3B
  • Beast Academy Language Arts Practice Book 3C
  • Beast Academy Language Arts Practice Book 3D

Note: To ensure students have the best experience, it is recommended that they do not read the course texts before class starts.

Reading Tab

Students will spend time reading at home every week. On the first day of each new unit, students will choose either a primary or alternate book to read. Students will receive a copy of the primary book during class. However, if students want, they can also choose to read the alternate book, which must be acquired either from a library or bookstore. Every week, students will read a part of their book for homework and then take a quiz on the Reading tab.

Primary Books

  • Gifts from the Gods
  • DK Eyewitness: Ancient Greece
  • How to Stage a Catastrophe
  • The Atlas Obscura Explorer’s Guide for the World’s Most Adventurous Kid

Alternate Books

  • Percy Jackson’s Greek Gods

Our family regularly talks about AoPS. We try to think about how our life would be different without you all. What if my daughter hadn't learned to love math? What if she never experienced being pushed to her limits? Overcoming failure? She wouldn't be who she is. And she is AWESOME! A very proud mom here. We are so fortunate that we found AoPS Academy. I credit AoPS for much of her confidence.

Instructor To Be Announced

We have not yet announced an instructor for this class, but we are working on it! It can take time to match all of our classes to our instructors' daily schedules. However, all AoPS instructors are exceptional educators, and each section of this course will cover the same basic material. Students can confidently enroll in this class and expect that one of our outstanding instructors will be assigned soon.
