PhD Admissions

The PhD program in Psychology trains students for careers in research and teaching. In addition to a wide range of courses, the PhD program is characterized by close collaboration between students and their faculty advisors.

General Information

The Department of Psychology holistically reviews each candidate's complete application to assess the promise of a career in teaching and research. Consideration is based on various factors, including courses taken, grade point average, letters of recommendation, and the statement of purpose. Additionally, the Department of Psychology places considerable emphasis on research training, and admitted students have often been involved in independent research as undergraduate students or post-baccalaureate settings. Although there are no course requirements for admission, all applicants should have sufficient foundational knowledge and research experience to engage in graduate-level coursework and research.

We accept students with undergraduate degrees and those with both undergraduate and master's degrees. An undergraduate psychology major is not required; the Department welcomes applicants from other academic backgrounds.

Our application portal will open for the AY25-26 admissions cycle on September 15, 2024.

*Graduate student admissions are among the most important decisions we make as a department. Like many other PhD programs around the US and abroad, we have wrestled with the question of whether we should continue to require that applicants to our PhD program submit scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) as part of their application. After extensive review of the scientific literature and robust discussion among our faculty, we have decided to continue to make submission of GRE scores optional, but to Recommend that students submit GRE scores if they are able to do so. We wanted to share our candid thoughts on this here.

A number of empirical and review papers have noted that performance on the GRE is not a strong predictor of performance on a number of graduate school metrics (e.g., correlation with graduate school GPA = .21-.31, which represent small to medium effect sizes; Woo et al., 2023) and that the fact that the significant group differences (by race/ethnicity and gender) in GRE scores suggest it may discourage those from underrepresented groups from applying to PhD programs. Other research has shown that although there are limitations to the GRE, other potential predictors of success in graduate school have even smaller correlations with such outcomes, and removing the GRE would lead us to rely on these other potentially biased factors, such as where a person received their undergraduate degree, what research lab they had the opportunity to train in, and letters of recommendation.(1) We have heard anecdotally from current and former PhD students (including those historically underrepresented in PhD programs) who argue that the GRE helped them demonstrate their abilities when they didn’t attend a top undergraduate institution or work in a well-known research lab.

On balance, we acknowledge that the GRE is an imperfect test and should not be used as the single deciding factor in admissions; however, we fear that excluding it altogether will introduce more, not less, bias into the admissions decision-making process. Thus, we have decided to keep the submission of GRE scores optional, but to recommend that students submit their scores if they are able to do so.

We know that many students might expect that we are looking for near-perfect scores as a requirement for admission. We are not. We do not use a rigid threshold for GRE scores, and take it into consideration with other factors (e.g., strong performance in undergraduate statistics might be used to demonstrate quantitative abilities in place of strong performance on the quantitative section of the GRE). To be transparent about this, we note that our past 10 years’ of admitted PhD applicants have had scores on the GRE ranging on the Quantitative section from the 38th to the 98th percentile, and on the Verbal section ranging from the 59th to the 99th percentile.(2 )

We will continue to work toward determining how to make admissions decisions in a way that identifies the candidates who match best with what our PhD training program has to offer and in doing so may make further adjustments to our admissions requirements in future admissions cycles.

The model PhD Entrance Test Pattern is divided into two parts: Part A comprises of study questions in numerical ability, language skills, and logical thinking. Part B consists of technical questions about the subjects.

Yes, you can pursue a PhD without having to pass the NET or JRF if you pass the written tests and interviews at the various institutions or institutes.

A small proportion of students earn their PhDs in two years, while a small percentage of outstanding students accomplish it in 12 months. It’s difficult to stress how unusual and impressive this is, but it’s always possible. The key to a fast-track PhD is to develop a solid academic CV before you begin.

No, there is no age limit for seeking a PhD in general.

In an official Notice from MHRD dated 27 August 2018, the applicants from SC/ST/OBC (Speaking from Non-Creamy layers)/University category shall be permitted to relax by a 5 percent mark (from 50 percent to 45 percent).

Two components are included in the PhD entrance test pattern: Part A: Research issues in numerical capacity, linguistic skills and logical thinking are generally addressed. Part B: Technical issues linked to disciplines are discussed.

No, it does not. Your 12th class is important if you wish to take UG entrance examinations, certain colleges require admission tests. Although admittance is based on class 12 iare your post graduationn several universities. The issues in your PhD admissions are your postgraduation. In the postgraduate period, the qualifying standards for Phd have been 50%.

Cracking any of the above-mentioned PhD entrance exams can turn out to be a difficult task for many. An alternative option to these tests is to apply for a doctoral degree abroad which can further provide you with international exposure into your chosen field of interest. The jamia millia islamia chapter

  • The ranking of college is very decent so overall it's known everywhere and the research facilities of the institute is very well.
  • The faculties are very well and they work really hard for the students and also support students in the lab work
  • Every coin has two sides, so there are some bug also, in the era of technology, still jamia's documentation is offline
  • Lot of space is available in the campus, but jamia have few no. Of hostels due to which students have to live nearby locality

If you talk about ranking, then I can bet on it it's in the top 3 universities of india, and the engineering research team is well established. I've applied for hbtu kanpur and iet Lucknow and I've participated in jossa where I get admission in pec Chandigarh but I didn't go for them because at the same time I got admission in jamia millia islamia and I've opt it because it's quite renowned and also it's in delhi which is quite near to my home. The engineering ranking also quite better than the others i was getting. I didn't get rejection from any others college's mentioned above but at the same time I've got admission in jamia millia islamia. The admission process of BTech is done through the rank of jee mains, so once we get result of jee then jmi starts their separate counselling for admission in btech and on that basis it release list for admission in which cut-off and all sorts present. The cut-off varies year by year. Sometimes it goes higher and sometimes it closes very soon.

Should we do diploma engineering from jmi or not.

  • Faculty's of jmi is well educated and give proper mentorship
  • The quality of the infrastructure including campus amenities and learning facilities is also so good.
  • Number of students is more.Student should be around 50 but in Mt class there is 72 Student.
  • Lifts is not in proper condition and sometimes you will be stopped by professors or guard to use the lift.

I also applied of aligarh muslim University, but I could not pass the entrance examination. And I also applied for jamia millia islamia and I pass the examination in jamia millia islamia.my ny name is in 3rd list then I go to the jmi to take my admission then further verification will started and I take my admission.

FACTS RELATED TO JAMIA BTEC(MECHANICAL ENGG)

  • Faculties Are Very Well Qualified And Are Expert In Their Domain.Even Few Are In Top 2% Scientist.
  • Since The University Contains About 30K Student So There Are Lot To Interact.
  • Few Of The Labs Equipment Dont Function Properly.

One Need To Score 75% And More In Class 12 And Must Be Jee Qualified. Jamia Has Its Own Councelling System Hence They Dont Participate In Jossa Counselling. One Has To Fill Jamia Form in order to Get Considered For The Counselling. They Release a List Of Selected students and Call Them For Document Verification And If a Seat Is Left Then a Further List Also Comes. Since It Is A Minority College So There Is No Reservstion For Non-Muslim Student They Will Be Treated As General Irrespective Of Their Caste. Every Semester There Are 3 Papers In Which 2 Are Mid-Sem And 1 Is End Sem. The Paper Is Quite Moderate.

Jamia isn't that Jamia the way you think

  • One thing I would say about Jamia is that you won't feel any religion barrier. It is same as the other university.
  • You will have access to library everyday till 12 midnight so if you life nearby library is best option to spend your time.
  • One thing about my course I hate was that they didn't have the placement option so after graduation you have to find job yourself or just go for masters.

You have to be from the medical background or you should have studied biology in 11th and 12th to apply for biotechnology. You have to fill the application online and it is not every difficulty process. I don't remember about the application fees but it is very reasonable. Yes, reservations is their and muslim candidates gets a slight advantage. The paper for entrance in jamia is moderate level and if you have basis clear you can crack that exam. I would say that the fee deposits during the course enrollment can be online rather than standing in a bank line.

B.COM(hons.) From Jamia Millia Islamia( New Delhi).

  • The campus of the college is really big and attractive. Great option for the students who wish to take admission in such a college. The campus is full of greenery and has atleast 5 cafes/canteens. One can always have a great evening in such an env.
  • The people of the university are really cooperative and friendly. The amazing is full of amazing people and are always open for friendship and help. Students of Jamia become one anothers family and spend an amazing time during their study period here
  • Classes get cancelled really often. Every other day after reaching the campus you get to know that the class has been cancelled.
  • They don't seriously check the ID cards before giving people entry in the campus which makes it a spot for all sorts of people.

The eligibility of the course any candidate who has completed their +2 with a minimum of 50% can apply. Candidates who meet the eligibility criteria can fill out the admission form from JMI's official website (www.jmi.coe.in) as soon as the university releases a circular about the availability of the admission forms. The fee for the admission form is generally INR550. There are several reservations also like Muslim reservations, OBC/ST reservations, Muslim women reservations, Kashmiri Migrant reservations, PWD reservations, etc. The admission test is conducted by the university within 20-25 days after the last date of filling out the admission forms and the test is generally 1.5 hours. The BCOM(Hons.) entrance test contains 100 MCQs of 1 mark each and a .25 deduction for each wrong answer. The difficulty level is moderate to hard as the competition is high because of too many applicants.

Jmi b.ed review

  • I like the friendly environment of jamia millia islamia University. Teachers and students are very supportive and friendly in the campus
  • Things i don't like about the campus is class timing there is 2 hr gap i some classes and sometime professors used to skip classes
  • I don't the drinking water of the campus

Anyone can pursue this course after their graduation (any subject). Application form is available on jmi website which is jmi.ac.in The cutoff is different every year it is based on the difficulty of the entrance test when i was selected the cuttoff goes for general category was 125 mark out of 200 . There is 170 marks question will be asked in question paper you have to give ans on omr sheet in just 2 hrs .there 30 marks of interview held as well.

Jamia from the perspective of a fresher

  • I like the campus life of jamia. Its very happening. Since it has been soread across a wide area and interconnected
  • I utterly disliked the outdated use of technologies. During my admission I have to wait in long queue just to submit the fee

The entrance test for JMI B.A.LLB was comparatively easier if we compare it with clat. But since there are so many students for the course, that makes the competition tough and cut off high. Also the number of seats are very limited. So getting into jamia law can be consider as an achievement. The process of regustration is quite easy as everything is available on Jamia's official site. Students should regularly check the site for any valuable information. Jamia is very generous when it comes to reservation. There are reservations for Muslim OBC,muslim women, kashmiri migrants, pwd and a very bare 5% reservation for internal students.

  • Environment, the greenary and peace jamia holds has some different vibe. Infrastructure gives aesthetic vibes.
  • The campus life is also good as I experienced.
  • The less maintainance of infrastructure and low maintainance.
  • Delay paperwork by the office and extra classes.

The student after passing class 10th or 12th can give the entrance exam of this course. The admission process is easy as you have to fill an application form online to register after the entrance date will be announce and the admit card wil be uploaded on the official website. Then you have to qualify the entrance exam which is in the form of written test. the cut off was 80 out of 100.

  • THE 2ND CONS WILL BE ABOUT THE CAMPUS. SMOKING IS BAN IN CAMPUS BUT SOME CANTEENS SELL IT ILLEGALY WHICH IS NOT GOOD. 2. SOME CASES OF RAGING ARE ALSO SHOWN TIME TO TIME

THE ELIGBILITY OF COURSE IS MENTIONED IN PROSPECTUS YOU CAN CHECK IT BY LOGIN WWW.COE.IN THERE IS A PERSONAL WEBSITE OF JAMIA WHICH IS WWW.JMI.AC.IN THROUGH THIS WEBSITE YOU CAN ACCES ALL ABOUT THE JAMIA MILLIA ISLAMIA THE FORMS ARE RELEASE NEARLY IN THE MONTH OF JUNE THERE IS RESERVATION QUOTA BUT NOT FOR EVERY COURSE THERE IS SEAT RESERVED FOR MUSLIM THE TEST CONDUCT BY JAMIA IS FOR 2 HOURS AND 100 QUE AND CUT OFFS NEARLY 79 TO 86 SOMETHING

Jamia Millia Islamia: 4 Answered Questions

Is it difficult to take admission in jamia millia islamia.

Neha Uniyal

Admission to Jamia Millia Islamia can be competitive and challenging, but it ultimately depends on the program and the number of applicants. Here are some points to consider:

  • Jamia Millia Islamia is a central university, which means it has its own entrance exam for most undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
  • The admission process typically involves filling out an online application form, uploading necessary documents, and appearing for the entrance exam or interview.
  • The level of competition varies from program to program. Some programs may have a higher number of applicants and therefore be more challenging to get into, while others may have fewer applicants and be less competitive.
  • It's essential to prepare well for the entrance exam, as it plays a crucial role in the admission process. Make sure you understand the syllabus, exam pattern, and marking scheme for the program you're applying for.
  • The university also has reserved seats for different categories of students, including SC/ST, OBC, PwD, and Kashmiri migrants. These reserved seats may have a lower cutoff than the general category, which can be an advantage for eligible candidates.

Additionally, some programs at Jamia Millia Islamia may have additional criteria for admission, such as work experience, research aptitude, or specific academic backgrounds.
