Studying a PhD in Norway has lots of advantages. Norway has many natural resources and a strong economy yet maintains a welcoming and forward-thinking culture. This is exemplified by its excellent higher education system, which delivers admirable teaching and research. Norway has a small number of universities, yet they often outperform what may be expected of them. Significantly, Norwegian public universities offer free education for their students.

This guide covers everything you’ll need to know about doctoral study in Norway, including information about Norwegian universities, PhD course structure, applications, funding and visas.

PhD opportunities in Norway – what’s on offer for 2024?

Known as a ‘knowledge nation’, Norway prides itself on lifelong learning. Despite the small size of its higher education system, Norway has many world-leading universities that deliver high-quality education.

The country has also produced some amazing artists, thinkers and scientists such as Ludvig Holberg, Edvard Munch, Roald Amundsen, Magnus Carlsen and no less than 13 Nobel Prize winners.

A Norwegian PhD also enables you to study in a beautiful country, with an array of unique natural phenomena that cannot be experienced anywhere else.

There are some fantastic reasons to find your PhD in Norway:

• No tuition fees – There are no tuition fees in the Norwegian Higher Education system. PhD researchers are considered employees and you will earn a doctoral salary and associated worker’s rights
• Happiness – Norway is regularly ranked as a country with the best quality of life in the world
• Natural beauty – Norway is also one of the most beautiful countries in the world. The serene fjords, Arctic tundra, Northern Lights and solar spectacles make it a great place for you to study
• English-speakers – English is widely spoken to an excellent standard in Scandinavia

Norwegian universities

There are four main types of university institution in Norway. The majority are public and state-run but there are a range of private institutions too. Most doctoral students will study at public universities.

• Universities are the main higher education research and teaching institution in Norway. They usually offer a range of postgraduate degrees and have extensive academic powers enabling them to accredit their own programmes. There are ten universities in Norway.
• Specialised universities are much like standard universities but offer postgraduate courses in a focused area of research. There are three of these institutions in Norway.
• University colleges are very similar to universities, except that they are private institutions and must apply for external accreditation. Eight university colleges are accredited.
• Private specialised universities are private higher education institutions in Norway that provide courses in specialised areas of research. Like university colleges, they also require external accreditation. Three private specialised universities are accredited.

Here's a little more about the best-ranked universities in Norway, according to the Times Higher Education 2023 World Rankings.

Unviversity of Oslo

Established in 1811, the University of Oslo is a leading research institution in the heart of Norway's capital. Though all of its undergraduate courses are taught in Norweigan, it offers English-taught Masters degrees and PhDs. Oslo is located at the end of the 100km-long Oslo Fjord and is surrounded by stunning forests, hills and coastlines, making it the perfect destination for nature lovers!

University of Bergen

The University of Bergen is a research-instensive university in Norway's second-largest city. It is particularly well-known for its natural science research in areas such as marin biology and climate change. It educates over 20,000 students, and has a thriving international community with around half of doctoral candidates originating from outside of Norway.

Norweigan University of Science and Technology

The Norweigan University of Science and Technology is an internationally-oriented university offering postgraduate courses in English. Its research priorities are mainly in science and technology, but it offers programmes across a wide range of disciplines including arts and humanities.

UiT The Artic University of Norway

UiT is Norway's northernmost university, located on the very edge of the Artic region, which makes it an ideal destination for environmental and climate research. UiT is at the heart of Tromsø, the largest city in northern Norway, which spans two islands.

Accreditation

The state-run public higher education institutes of Norway (universities and specialised universities) have self-accreditation rights and can organise and award their own degrees. Private institutions must have their postgraduate degrees accredited by the Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education (NOKUT). NOKUT has a key role in the governance of all higher education institutions.

PhD structure

Norwegian PhD programmes are third-cycle qualifications following the Bologna process . As such, you will be required to perform research and write a PhD thesis.

Often, PhDs in Norway follow a structured format . This typically involves a training component prior to commencing your doctoral research and thesis writing. You may also be considered a university employee with accompanying employment rights. In this case, you will have teaching and administrative responsibilities to uphold.

A typical full-time PhD in Norway lasts three years . However, for a structured PhD programme with institutional duties and specialist training, you may be employed by your university for four years .

Supervision

Much like in the UK, doctoral students will have a senior researcher as a supervisor. They will regularly oversee and evaluate your research work, project progression and thesis writing. You may also have additional supervisors with specific responsibilities.

Assessment and examination

Your PhD thesis will be read by a committee of at least three senior academics, with a minimum of one external examiner. After the thesis has been examined and approved by the committee, your research must be defended orally through at least one lecture and a public thesis defence before a reviewing committee of institutional opponents.

Fees and funding

An important and appealing aspect of PhD study in Norway is that tuition is free for all students. However, the country has a high cost of living. Therefore, some form of maintenance funding is usually necessary.

Norwegian PhD fees

There are no tuition fees to pay for PhD programmes at universities in Norway. However, at many Norwegian universities you will be expected to pay a €50-100 fee to the student’s union each semester for membership and a student card.

Norwegian PhD funding

Although tuition fees for PhD study are normally free , Norway has a high cost of living. Most doctoral candidate subsidise this either through university employment (and the associated responsibilities) or through part-time work.

However, there are also a limited number of funding opportunities for international students. These are usually intended to corer maintenance costs during your study. Many of these scholarship and grants have important restrictions and prerequisites that should be noted. Examples include:

• EEA / Norway Grants are offered to EEA students studying in Norway.
• The Anglo-Norse Society in London offers bursaries and grants to British students studying in Norway.
• The Erasmus+ scheme can provide funding and Erasmus loans for EEA students studying abroad.

Applying for a PhD in Norway

PhD applications in Norway are processed by individual research institutions. Therefore, the requirements, documentation and deadlines for doctoral programme applications can vary between institutions . Applications should also be made directly to the prospective university .

Admission requirements

PhD applicants in Norway must have a Masters degree in a relevant subject area. A corresponding degree may be acceptable – you can check the eligibility of your qualifications at the Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education (NOKUT).

The specific application requirements vary between research institutions . You should always check with your prospective university.

PhD candidates will usually be required to write a good research proposal or project description and complete relevant application forms. You may also be required to provide other typical PhD application documents . Some additional materials that may be required could include:

• Certified copies of all documents relevant to your educational background
• A funding plan for your studies (for the full 3-4 years of full-time study, plus information about the funding source and type)
• A statement describing any significant scholarly or material resource requirements
• The name of at least one proposed academic supervisor (unless stipulated otherwise)

PhD entry requirements

The general eligibility criteria for PhD applications in Norway is similar to most other countries in the Europe. Our guide explains entry requirements for a prospective PhD student.

Language requirements

Most PhD programmes in Norway are taught in English. Prospective doctoral candidates from non-native English-speaking countries will need to submit scores of English language tests . The test and scores required can vary between different Norwegian research institutions and may even differ depending on the doctoral programme.

Some PhD programmes may be taught in Norwegian. Similarly, the scores of Norwegian language tests will need to be submitted for non-native Norwegian speakers. The scores required differ depending on research institution and programme of study. Even if Norwegian is not the language of instruction, proficiency in Norwegian will come in useful academically and in daily life.

Application process

In Norway, PhD programme applications are formal job applications . To complete admission, a written contract must be signed between the doctoral candidate, your supervisor, and the university or The Research Council of Norway (or an industry partner / funder, if appropriate).

Student visas

Norway is a welcoming country for PhD students, and this is reflected by the relatively simple immigration process. Doctoral candidates will still need to obtain some important travel documents.

Visa information for UK students in Norway

UK students will no longer be EU citizens from the 2021-22 academic year onwards. This means you may be considered as an international student when studying in Norway. You may be subject to different visa requirements and fee rates, unless otherwise stated.

Norwegian visas

PhD students from EU / EEA / Switzerland will not need a visa to travel to Norway; other international students will require a visa to enter the country.

In Norway, visas are only valid for a period of up to 90 days. Instead, you will require a student residence permit, health insurance and a Norwegian identity number.

Your prospective university will be able to advise and assist you with your visa process. More information can also be found at your nearest Norwegian foreign embassy .

Student residence permit

In order to study a PhD in Norway for more than three months, you may require a student residence permit.

For doctoral candidates from EU / EEA nations , you will only need to register with the local police within the first three months of living in Norway.

For doctoral candidates from non-EU / EEA nations , you will need to apply for a student residence permit . To be eligible for this you will need approximately €12,925 to cover living costs. If you are studying at a private university and will be paying tuition fees, you will need additional funds to cover these, too. This money will usually need to be deposited into a Norwegian bank account. There is also a processing fee of around €560 for each application.

Doctoral candidates from Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Sweden) are only required to report their residence to the National Registry .

Health insurance

All doctoral candidates require a form of health insurance to access medical treatment in Norway.

EU / EEA / Swiss students that hold a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) are eligible for health treatment in Norway. If you do not have an EHIC, you must have another form of medical insurance.

Non-EU / EEA / Swiss international PhD students (who are studying in Norway for more than one year) will be insured under the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme upon registering at a research institution and receiving a student residence permit.

Nordic students (Danish, Finnish, Icelandic and Swedish) automatically become entitled to healthcare upon registering in the National Population Register.

Norwegian identity number

To live in Norway for more than six months, you will also be required to report your move and receive a Norwegian Identity Number. To do this, you must book an appointment at a Norwegian Tax Office before you move in order to report your relocation within eight days of arrival.

The documents that are usually required to report you move are:

• Your passport or national ID card
• Police registration certificate
• Property contract (purchase or rental)
• Employment contract (for employed PhD students)
• Confirmation of study place offer
• Any other additional documents (this will be requested by the Norwegian Tax Administration)

This will enable you to open a Norwegian bank account and receive a student card.

Studying a PhD in Norway provides an opportunity for globally-recognised high-quality research and should be a considerable qualification for future work.

As an employed doctoral researcher in Norway, you will receive professional experience of Norwegian work that will be useful for future endeavours.

Norway welcomes international workers, and the immigration process is relatively simple. The country has a highly-regarded welfare and social system with many benefits.

BI Presidential Scholarship 

BI Norwegian Business School is the largest business school in Norway and the second largest in the country. The university offers a fully funded master’s scholarship called the BI Presidential Scholarship .

This scholarship is available for application by both domestic and international students. 

For Norwegian and international applicants who are residents of Norway chosen, the scholarship will cover the full tuition fees for each semester for up to two years.

While international applicants chosen will be entitled to full coverage of tuition fees and a 70 per cent stipend to help students with living expenses.

You can choose to apply for this scholarship simultaneously as you you apply to the university. All you have to do is write a scholarship application letter.

NORAM Scholarship

The Norway-America Association (NORAM) offers a scholarship to provide financial support for students to further their studies in Norway.

This scholarship is specifically catered towards American students who are pursuing their post-graduate studies or research. 

In establishing this scholarship, the main aim was to bring the two countries closer together and promote studies of mutual interest for both. 

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must be a full-time postgraduate student in a programme that is longer than three months. 

Every year, ten scholarships are granted to students based on their academic performance and financial situation.

Erasmus+ Scholarship Programme

Through the Erasmus+ Scholarship Programme , students from programmes of partner countries will be offered the opportunity to be supported in their studies abroad. 

This opportunity is offered to students pursuing their bachelor, master’s or postgraduate studies. Applicants chosen will be supported anywhere from three to 12 months.

To apply for this programme, students must contact their home country’s higher education institute.

Norwegian-Russian Scholarships

Are you a student in Russia looking to study in Norway? With the Norwegian-Russian Scholarships, your dreams might just come true. 

This scholarship allows students to study in Norway for a semester or two. Offered by the Directorate for Higher Education and Skills in Norway, students from Russian universities can apply to study in selected universities in Norway. 

Every year 30 scholarships will be granted, 15 of which are given to those pursuing Norwegian language and literature and the remainder to other fields of study.

Applicants will not have to pay tuition fees and other expenses if selected.

High North Fellowship Programme

The High North Fellowship Programme was established to support international students coming to Norway to study, making this another option to tuition free universities in Norway. 

This programme is open to students from Canada, Russia, South Korea, the US, and Japan interested in studying in Northern Norway.

Students enrolled in a university in those countries will be eligible to apply for the fellowship. If selected, the scholarship will cover one or two semesters of study, and students will be required to stay in the country for a minimum of four months.

The programme will cover living expenses as institutions in Norway do not charge tuition fees for international students. Applicants will receive a monthly stipend and travel grant of approximately 9,440 Norwegian krone.

Hello, for Bachelor’s, all courses are taught in Norwegian so you need Norwegian proficiency, not English. For Master’s, according to their English Proficiency Page , you need at least 6.5 on IELTS.

Emer student earns scholarship to pursue phd while providing therapy to those in need.

As a Registered Behavioral Technician for Los Angeles County, Sir Malik Clark provides autism and behavioral therapy for young people with moderate to severe special needs. At the same time, he has also spent the past two years as a graduate student in CSULB’s Master of Science in Emergency Services Administration (EMER) program. In recognition of his academic excellence and commitment to higher education, he was honored with the prestigious 2024-25 Sally Casanova Scholar Award from the CSU Chancellor’s Office. 

“I’ve been blessed and fortunate enough to be raised in an environment where school was an expectation,” he said. “The EMER program has done a phenomenal job with truly correlating the curriculum to a practical sense that can be readily applied when facilitating a job.” 

As an undergraduate political science student at Cal Poly Pomona, Sir Malik competed on their Model United Nations National team, where he was first inspired to contribute to improving the quality of life for those in need. His passion for this type of work led to the EMER program in 2022, where he received the training required to help communities on a larger scale. 

“Dr. Shirley Feldmann-Jensen and Professor Margaret Gutierrez have been invaluable during my time spent at CSULB,” he said. “I could not help but follow through on the career support and suggestions made on my behalf from these individuals.” 

Professor Gutierrez shared her specialty in emergency services for Native American tribal groups, which helped Sir Malik understand how to work with demographics that have been historically underserved. His mentor, EMER program coordinator Dr. Feldmann-Jensen, guided Sir Malik through the process of applying for the Sally Casanova Scholarship and ensured his readiness to pursue a PhD. The scholarship was launched by the late Dr. Sally Casanova, who worked in the Chancellor’s Office and served as dean at CSU Dominguez Hills, and has awarded funds and mentorship to more than 2,300 CSU students over the past 30 years.

“CSULB has been the cargo ship that is transferring all the skills, curriculum, and practical applications of theory to the destination,” he explained. “Hopefully I can unpack these skills in the furtherance of innovation and organizational development.”

As Sir Malik prepares to finish the EMER program this year and take his academic pursuits to the next level, his intensive professional work continues to be enriching for both himself and his clients.

“To say the least, young people ranging from the ages of 3-21 can most definitely keep you on your toes!” he exclaimed. “This job is truly allowing me to be a part of the change and development that will hopefully impact these young ones and their families for the rest of their lives.”

Pathways to the PhD programme at MF

There are three alternatives for admission to the PhD programme:

1. Application for a Doctoral Research Fellowship

MF regularly advertises Doctoral Research Fellowship positions. An application for such a position is to be submitted through the application portal JobbNorge. Applicants employed as Research Fellows will automatically be enrolled in the PhD programme.

2. Application for admission to the PhD programme 

Twice a year, applicants who seek to complete a PhD with full funding from their employer, or who can otherwise demonstrate sufficient self-funding to undertake a PhD project, may apply for admission. The application deadlines are 1 March and 1 October, and applications are submitted through MF’s Søknadsweb. 

3. Application for a collaborative PhD  In some cases, MF may enter into an agreement for a PhD project to be completed as an institutional collaboration, wherein salary expenses are shared between MF and the PhD candidate’s own workplace, institution or organisation. Requests for such a PhD project should be directed to the Prorector. Admission to the programme is otherwise conducted in the same manner as outlined in point 2 above. When a proposed project is accepted, a separate institutional collaboration agreement is drafted, in addition to the standard PhD agreement. 

Regardless of how admission takes place, a well-developed project description is essential, as it forms the basis for admission. The project description will undergo an academic assessment before it is sent for deliberation by MF’s Research Committee.

The application portal (Søknadsweb) opens on 1 February/ 1 September.

MF's programme is open to applicants from other universities and colleges in Norway and abroad. Students in the PhD programme must attend mandatory teaching for the coursework, 50% and 90% seminars, and public defense at MF (Oslo, Norway). Exceptions may be granted for digital attendance.

In order to be admitted to the PhD programme, you must

- have completed at least five years of higher education, and received a master’s/cand.theol. degree or equivalent in a relevant subject area. The master’s degree should include a written thesis of minimum 30 ECTS credits and be graded B (or equivalent) or better.

- submit a project description in line with MF's template for project descriptions .

- submit documentation of finances/external funding for the PhD period and project.

In cases where the applicant does not meet the grade requirement or does not have a master's degree, but is clearly qualified, the Research Committee can consider the application on an individual basis.

- Educational background

Relevant degrees from institutions of higher education must be documented by uploading copies of the original diploma, transcript of records, and diploma supplement. If any of these documents are not originally in English or a Nordic language, an official translation must accompany the copies of the original documents.

- Finances/Funding

Applicants who have external funding for their PhD, for example through their current employer, grants, or scholarships, must provide documentation of this.

Applicants who plan to finance their PhD with private funds, must provide a statement addressing how they plan to finance thei PhD period and project.

- Project description

Applicants must upload a fully developed project proposal in line with MF's template for project descriptions.

- CV (curriculum vitae)

The CV should include references.

- List of publications (if any)

There are three different programme structures offered depending on the method used in the PhD project. Please see your supervisor and/or the PhD coordinator for help in setting up your plan.

Method of instruction

Whereas the PhD program aims at individual and specialised studies, the quality of such studies also depends on participating in a research community where topics and problems are discussed in courses where other students participate. These courses are structured around four areas:

- Philosophy of science (10 ECTS)

- Methodology (10 ECTS)

- The Status of the discipline (10 ECTS)

- Thesis (150 ECTS)

Specialists in their field teach all courses. The format consists of lectures, panels of responses and discussions, seminars, and work groups. Some seminars are offered in cooperation with other (national or international) institutions. The literature for each course should generally be read before the seminar starts.

The different parts of the coursework provide the opportunity for a hermeneutical interplay, by which the Candidate becomes skilled in understanding the context of their research. The work on the PhD thesis nevertheless constitutes the major part of the program work. (150ECTS). The course components support, inform, guide, and inspire the individual research project of the candidate, but some of the coursework contents also provide a broader context of knowledge than what is required for the thesis. Hence, the program educates for research in general, as well.

1 ECTS (= European Credit Transfer System, ’studiepoeng’) requires 25-30 hours of work from the candidate.

Philosophy of science (10 ECTS)

Two courses are required on this topic. The fundamental perspectives in these courses place the PhD specialisation and the PhD thesis within the context of scholarly work, and the students can develop their understanding and be enabled to document the larger horizon within which the research takes part.

PHD901 (5 ECTS) and PHD902 are mandatory for all students. These courses focus on fundamental questions in the study of and research on Religion and Values.

Methodology (10 ECTS)

Two courses are required on this topic: MET910 (5 ECTS) and MET920 (5 ECTS). The courses focus on methodological issues and train students to discern, choose and employ proper scientific/scholarly methods. Two courses are offered in each of the following fields:

A. History and exegesis

B. Systematic Theology

C. Social sciences and empirical research

The student normally takes both courses from either A, B or C, but combinations may be granted by application.

PHD930 The Status of the Discipline (10 ECTS)

This course aims to give a thorough understanding of the present stand and status of the discipline. To achieve this, the student participates in activities relevant to the thesis topic. The course requires participation in two international conferences or an academic stay abroad. In addition, involvement in Research groups, seminars, or complete courses from Research Schools may be considered fulfilling part of the course requirements.

PHD950 Thesis (150 ECTS)

The central part of the program is the writing of the thesis. The thesis may consist of a single work or several shorter works with an extensive introduction. Research seminars are offered regularly, and students must attend and present their work in these.

Equivalation

By application, equivalent courses may be accepted to fulfil the program.

Learning outcome

The aims of the PhD program can be described as follows:

- is at the forefront of knowledge within their academic field and masters the field’s philosophy of science and relevant methods.

- can evaluate the expediency and application of different methods and processes in research and scholarly development projects.

- can contribute to developing new knowledge, new theories, methods, interpretations, and forms of documentation in the field.

- can formulate problems, plan and carry out research and scholarly development work.

- can carry out research and scholarly research work of a high international standard.

- can handle complex academic issues and challenge established knowledge and practice in the field.

General competence

- can identify relevant ethical issues and carry out research with scholarly integrity.

- can communicate research and development work through recognised Norwegian and international channels.

- can participate in international scholarly discussions.

The totality of the qualifications acquired is assessed at the end of the PhD programme. When the coursework is completed, the successful defense of the PhD thesis and the trial lecture indicates that the qualifications are achieved).

After reworking, the final version of the course paper should be sent to the responsible course convener for final approval, usually within three weeks after the course. It will be subject to the exam that term.

Papers are approved by the course convener(s) or the supervisor(s). The courses are graded passed/failed based on fulfilled course requirements

Application opens for  Norway scholarships for international students from Africa and developing countries every year. These are either partial or full fee scholarships for undergraduate, master or PhD/doctoral degrees.

Here is our shortlist of Scholarships in Norway for international students in 2024-25

#1.Norwegian Quota Scholarship scheme

The Quota Scheme is a mobility program that provides scholarships to students from underdeveloped nations(eg South Asian, African countries), Eastern Europe, and Central Asia to pursue Master’s or Ph.D. degrees in Norwegian higher education institutions. The Scholarship is intended for students pursuing bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in Norwegian universities and university colleges. The major goal of the Quota Scheme is to contribute to capacity building via education, which will help the students’ home countries when they return.

The Quota scheme is used by the majority of Norwegian universities and colleges. Each year, the participating institutions are allotted a certain number of students through the program. The majority of programs are at the Master’s or Ph.D. level, but the Quota Scheme also offers some Bachelor’s degree programs.

Each student receives the same stipend as a Norwegian student in an identical school program. A grant of 40% and a loan of 60% are provided. The loan component, however, may be waived if the student returns to his or her native country after finishing the term of study.

Students who stay in Norway after completing their education or move to a country other than their native country must return the loan.

#2.High North Fellowship Program

The High North Fellowship program provides scholarships to students from Canada, Japan, Russia, South Korea, and the United States who study at a Northern Norwegian university as part of their higher education. The High North Fellowship Program is aimed at studies that are important to the North and is only available to students studying in specific fields.

The program is primarily aimed at Master’s and Bachelor’s level students, although it is also available to PhD students. Bachelor and Master students must attend courses for credit in Norway, although PhD students might come as research fellows.

Each fellowship recipient receives a monthly salary of around NOK 9,440 as well as a travel grant of the same amount. Higher education institutions in Norway do not charge international students tuition, and the stipend is designed to cover housing and living expenses.

#3.University of Oslo Fully funded Masters Scholarships

The University of Oslo Fully-paid Masters Scholarships 2024 are available to students from Africa, Asia, Oceania, Central America, or South America who want to study for a master’s degree in Norway. The scholarships are sponsored by the International summer school.

#4. NORAM scholarships for USA Citizens

NORAM scholarships give financial support for Americans to study or conduct research in areas of common interest to Norway and the United States in order to promote the two nations’ friendship. NORAM awards up to ten scholarships ranging from $1,500 to $5,000 to American students each year, depending on merit and need. The size of the individual grants is determined by the study topic, objective, and length of stay in Norway. Candidates must be US citizens and hold a Bachelor’s degree by the application deadline.

#5. Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) Scholarships

NTNU does not charge tuition. But, students  must bear their own living expenses. Furthermore, in order to be granted a student visa, all foreign students who are not nationals of the EU/EEA/EFTA nations must be able to demonstrate that they have sufficient funds to live in Norway. You just need to apply for NTNU programs and you will be considered for scholarship automatically upon acceptance.

3 tuition-free universities in Norway with English as medium of instruction

1) nord university .

Nord  University,  founded   2016,  is  one  of  the  country’s  newest  institutions,  yet  it  provides  a  high-quality  education. It  provides  a  range  of  English-taught  programs  at  various  levels.

You have to only pay  a nominal semester  fee  of  725  Norwegian  krone( Approx. $72 USD). 

You  must  also  demonstrate  that  you  have  sufficient  funds  to  meet  your  living  expenses  in  Norway  –  roughly  NOK130K per  year (Approx. $13K/year).

2) University of Bergen

The University of Bergen provides two year master’s degree programs.

Around 25 Master’s programs are taught in English. eg Humanities , social sciences. psychology, fine art, music, design, medicine, natural sciences and technical topics

Students will only pay the Student Welfare Organization a semester charge of NOK590 ($60USD). Sammen Housing, the student welfare organization, provides guaranteed and inexpensive housing to all students.

3) Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL)

In the west of Norway, HVL has five campuses: Førde, Sogndal, Bergen, Haugesund and Stord. Except for the Frde campus, most universities offer English-taught master’s programs. Only the Bergen and Stord campuses offer an English-taught Bachelor of Community Arts degree.

According to HVL, students are simply need to pay a small study fee every semester.

Makerere University in collaboration with Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) , Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) and Regional Universities Forum (for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM) are implementing a five year CoSTClim project (Collaborative Action for Strengthening Training Capacities in Climate Risk and Natural Resource management). It is envisaged that the successful students will leverage the time at NTNU to advance their progress on the PhD programme they are enrolled in. Clear outputs, benefits and outcomes from the mobility should be well articulated by the applicants. Potential applicants are encouraged to familiarize with the resources including staff and research focal areas at the collaborating department at NTNU ( www.ntnu.edu/geography ). The main supervision responsibility for the PhD students will remain with the supervisors at Makerere, but NTNU scholars will provide some complementary supervision, mentorship or assistance towards a publication. Nkrumah’s Legacy, Influence on Future Generations Endures

On September 21, 2024, the walls of the Yusuf Lule Auditorium at Makerere University reverberated with tributes of the powerful legacy of Kwame Nkrumah, a titan of Pan-Africanism and a visionary leader whose influence continues to shape the aspirations of the African continent. As the university celebrates the 70 th anniversary of Nkrumah Hall, tribute was paid to titan’s unwavering commitment to African unity, as students, scholars, and dignitaries gathered to reflect on the profound impact of his ideals.

This momentous occasion which featured a public lecture and celebrations at Nkrumah Hall grounds, was a resounding call to action for today’s students and young people to embody Nkrumah’s dream of a unified and independent Africa. With the weight of history on their shoulders, speakers such as Rt. Hon. Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda inspired the audience to envision a future where African nations stand together against the forces of division and exploitation.

Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, Prime Minister Emeritus and special envoy of His Excellency the President of Uganda, urged the younger generation to embrace the legacy of Kwame Nkrumah in the pursuit of a unified and independent African continent, calling for collective action in the face of adversity.

He highlighted Kwame Nkrumah as a prominent African leader and a pivotal figure in the quest for African unity. He emphasized that African continental agreements are a direct outcome of the philosophy of Pan-Africanism and African unity that Nkrumah championed during the challenging times when many African countries were still under colonial rule.

Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda noted that there is much to learn from Kwame Nkrumah, but what stands out most is his unwavering commitment to seeing Africa united, free, and independent—determining its own destiny, making its own decisions, and achieving enlightenment. He stressed that Nkrumah’s vision for a united Africa was rooted in the belief that political and economic cooperation among African nations is vital for achieving true independence and sustainable development. He argued that colonialism and imperialism can only be effectively confronted through unity and collective action.

“Upon Ghana’s independence in 1957, Kwame Nkrumah stated that the freedom of Ghana would be meaningless unless it was linked to the liberation of the entire continent. To this end, he ensured that Ghana served as a political and military base for training African freedom fighters to prepare for their respective nations’ liberation. This commitment inevitably created tension between Nkrumah and several oppressive colonial regimes across Africa, but he remained resolute in his mission. Ultimately, his efforts gained significant momentum,” Dr. Rugunda remarked.

Dr. Ruhakana further highlighted that Nkrumah, alongside his political party, the Convention People’s Party (CPP), collaborated with numerous freedom fighters and Pan-Africanists both from the diaspora and within the continent. He emphasized the mutual influence among these leaders, which propelled their shared causes forward. Dr. Ruhakana identified key allies such as Julius Nyerere (Tanzania), Gamal Abdel Nasser (Egypt), and Patrice Lumumba (Democratic Republic of the Congo), along with Dr. W.E.B. Du Bois from the diaspora. He noted that Dr. Du Bois, the first Black individual to earn a PhD from Harvard University, was dedicated to connecting the diaspora with the African continent. He was also a pivotal intellectual leader in the struggle for African American rights and equality.

He explained that Nkrumah recognized how colonial powers aimed to weaken and divide Africa in order to exploit its natural resources and people, leading to the enslavement of Africans while developing other parts of the world. This exploitation served the interests of others, rather than those of the African people. Consequently, Nkrumah understood that Africans needed protection.

“Nkrumah realized that without protection, Africans would continue to be exploited. He asserted that Africa must unite. He authored a classical text titled ‘Africa Must Unite,’ in which he passionately articulated the importance of trade and collaboration among African nations. Even 45 years ago, his insights into the dangers of colonialism and neo-colonialism, which he described as the final stage of independence, were profoundly relevant,” he stated.

“President SékouTouré of Guinea declared Kwame Nkrumah co-President of Guinea—an honor I have not heard being bestowed upon anyone else in the world. His special duty as co-president was to champion the cause of African liberation. He had previously done so in Ghana, and President Sékou believed he would do it again. A year later, in 1967, Nkrumah organized the All-African Peoples’ Conference in Accra, resolutely inspiring the struggle for independence and liberation across Africa,” Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda noted.

Reflecting on his time at Makerere University, Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda shared that he joined the institution in 1969 as a medical student under the chancellorship of Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, a distinguished alumnus of Makerere. At that time, the university was relatively small, and had only a few halls of residence. He was assigned to a hall known as New Hall, which was later renamed Nkrumah Hall in 1970.

Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda emphasized the significance of the renaming of the New Hall. He recounted that when he joined Makerere University, there was considerable student activism that mirrored the broader movements both in Uganda and across the African continent. The struggle against colonialism was intensifying, and Africa was on a path to liberation, with Kwame Nkrumah serving as an iconic figure in this quest. He was a leader who dedicated Ghana’s resources to the collective benefit of the continent.

“So, the students at New Hall convened in the Senior Common Room and passed a resolution to give New Hall a name that honored its significance. The name selected was Nkrumah. This resolution was passed overwhelmingly, and I am proud to have been part of that decision. The name Nkrumah was then forwarded to the warden and the university administration, who accepted it. That is how the name came about. I am also glad to see that there is an appropriate statue in front of the hall, commemorating an iconic figure in Africa’s history,” Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda remarked.

He urged the audience to continually add value to the teachings and philosophy of Kwame Nkrumah in order to support the independence, self-determination, and decision-making of the African people, as well as to promote their unity. He emphasized that unity is essential for harnessing Africa’s vast natural resources, which are often exploited by others. He commended Makerere University for hosting the event and suggested that it should become an annual celebration.

“I would like to express my gratitude to Makerere University and the leadership of Nkrumah Hall for organizing this event and fostering an environment conducive to symposia and discussions of this nature. I recommend that this become an annual event to ensure that more students and the general public are reminded of the vision, ideals, and significant contributions of the iconic Pan-Africanist Kwame Nkrumah and what he advocated for,” he concluded.

Reflecting on the colonial powers’ efforts to weaken and divide Africa, Maj. Gen. Henry Masiko, Chief Political Commissar of the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF), remarked that Africa was treated like a cake, with its resources plundered and controlled. He noted that Nkrumah recognized that independence would be meaningless without addressing the distortions, particularly the issue of division.

“Nkrumah understood the four essential goals of independence, which can be summarized as five key objectives: First, ensuring that liberation is not exclusive to a select few. Second, that Africa must be free, as the struggle in many places was for immediate independence. Third, it is not enough for people to be free, they must also prosper. Nkrumah viewed the prosperity of the African people as a crucial aim of independence. Fourth, reassembly of Africa as one united entity. Lastly, the need to recover African dignity, heritage, culture, and identity. He fully grasped these five objectives and was especially passionate about the reintegration of Africa,” Maj. Gen. Masiko stated.

In his description of Africa, Maj. Gen. Masiko referred to it as the cradle of humankind, a continent rich in resources and the origin of civilization. He emphasized that Africa pioneered civilization, boasting of great empires like the Ghana Empire, the Mali Empire, and the Timbuktu civilization. Despite this, he noted that over the last 600 years, Africa has found itself at the bottom of the global hierarchy, regarded as the most marginalized and despised continent. He pointed out that this represents a contradiction that intrigued heroes namely Kwame Nkrumah and his compatriots.

“Africa, glorious in many ways, is now seen as the last. They understood that this decline resulted from a combination of mistakes and natural challenges that led to disastrous outcomes. The first disaster was the enslavement of our people, forcibly shipped away and scattered across the globe. This was a degrading catastrophe, as many Africans were reduced to the status of slaves. Following the horrors of slavery came the further degradation through colonization, which devastated Africa,” Maj. Gen. Masiko lamented.

As a champion in the formation of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), Maj. Gen. Masiko highlighted that Nkrumah’s dream during the founding meeting in Addis Ababa was to establish a United States of Africa (USA). According to Maj Gen. Masiko, Nkrumah urged all those gathered in Addis Ababa to leave their individual flags behind and raise the flag of a united Africa, advocating for one president, one army, and one government. He even expressed his willingness to step down as President of Ghana if other leaders would agree to form a unified African government in Addis Ababa. While he envisioned a cohesive and united Africa, today we still find ourselves categorized as the Fragmented States of Africa (FSA)! He reiterated that as we gather to commemorate Kwame Nkrumah, we must embrace his dream of unity.

“Kwame Nkrumah had a dream of reuniting Africa, and we must return to that vision. It remains relevant today. Nkrumah leaves us with the challenge he could not fulfill, but his spirit lives on. Imagine that reality of a unified Africa—why not? Perhaps in your lifetime, you could serve as a commander of the United Forces of Africa or serving in the federal government for the continent. That dream should not be regarded as in vain,” Maj. Gen. Masiko stated.

Reflecting on the Berlin Conference, which resolved to scramble and partition the continent, Maj. Gen. Masiko noted that European colonialists spent four months – from November to February devising ways to divide and share Africa among themselves, with no African representatives present at that meeting. He suggested starting a symbolic initiative by declaring these months as a “Months of Disaster” for Africa.

“The meeting in Berlin took place over November, December, January, and concluded in February. So why don’t we designate these four months as African Month of Remembrance for the disaster that occurred in Berlin? We could preach about and condemn the outcomes of the Berlin Conference while wearing black ribbons on our shoulders. I believe this could help awaken Africans to the reality of that disaster,” he proposed.

He revealed to the audience that there is still hope for Africa to reunite, citing a notable example: if Berlin, a city once divided to form East and West Germany, was reunited after the fall of the Berlin Wall, why can’t Africa, which only has imaginary borders, do the same? He thus urged the younger generation to carry forward the gospel of unity as Kwame Nkrumah did.

“The same Berlin was divided, not by rivers or natural boundaries like ours, but by a brick wall that separated Germany. I don’t know how many years they spent as East and West Germany, but they eventually woke up, broke down the wall, and reunited. For us Africans, since 1884, there have been no brick walls. So, young people, if we are unhappy with the divisions that exist, what should we do? I often hear phrases like ‘porous borders.’ Who told you there are porous borders? Porous implies there are holes, but these are merely artificial, imaginary colonial lines in your minds, and you call them porous borders,” he highlighted.

Discussing regional integration, particularly the East African Community (EAC), which currently comprises seven member states, including South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), he shared his experience visiting refugee camps in Uganda. He noted that most of the refugees in these camps were from South Sudan and the DRC. He questioned the efficacy of the EAC by asking, “How can members of a community be refugees within their own community?”

In her speech, Mrs. Lorna Magara, Chairperson of the Makerere University Council, emphasized that Kwame Nkrumah’s vision for a politically united and economically independent Africa is as relevant today as it was during his lifetime. As a champion of Pan-Africanism, Nkrumah advocated for a united front against colonialism and the self-determination of African nations. Mrs. Magara asserted that Nkrumah’s dream extended beyond Ghana; it encompassed the aspiration for the entire continent to unite as one.

“Kwame Nkrumah was a great and charismatic man who inspired the fight for independence for Africa. His vision for a politically united, economically independent, and socially equitable Africa is an ideal we must integrate into our educational culture, social, and political environments. Today, we learned of Kwame Nkrumah’s tremendous influence and how he inspired the change of name from New Hall to Nkrumah Hall. Listening to these stories reaffirms the importance of intergenerational conversations to inspire the young generation to live by conviction and for a greater cause,” she said.

She called for a renewed commitment to Nkrumah’s ideals, particularly among the youth, who represent the future of Africa with 73% of Uganda’s population under the age of 17. She said that it is crucial to inspire the next generation to embrace the values of unity and cooperation that Nkrumah championed. She encouraged young people to engage in conversations about their history and the legacies of those who fought for their freedom.

“There is a growing and urgent need to prioritize these conversations, where values and norms are communicated from one generation to another. The recent population census statistics recorded that 45,900,000 Ugandans, out of which 73% are under 17, and only 5% are above 60. With these statistics, there is an incredible opportunity and also a challenge to influence the most significant percentage of the population. The idea of passing on values and knowledge from the old to the young through conversations and storytelling, like we used to do in the past, is the heart of this effort. This is one of the reasons why this engagement of bringing our esteemed alumni to engage with current students is of great importance,” Mrs. Magara stated.

Mrs. Magara proposed the establishment of “Ekyooto,” a fireside discussion for young people to engage in discussions about Nkrumah’s vision and explore ways to actualize it in today’s context. She emphasized the importance of bridging the generational gap and empowering the youth to carry forward the torch of unity and purpose.

“We have begun having what we call “Ekyooto” where young people and university students, come around to discuss these matters. I have a proposal that from this discussion, we have a ‘kyooto’, to articulate together with our elders what we need to do, to actualize the ideals of Kwame Nkrumah and his colleagues.We have to bridge the gap. We talked about passing on the baton, and we heard that Kwame Nkrumah picked the baton from his elders,” she said.

In today’s digital age where social media significantly shapes the cultures and attitudes of the young generation, often to the detriment of their mental and social well-being, Mrs. Magara emphasized the importance of prioritizing mentorship and guiding students toward purposeful living. She expressed particular delight, acknowledging the efforts of students, especially the chairperson and her council, in initiating the vital dialogue. Mrs. Magara urged them to remain curious about the history and the narrative of the African continent as well as the legacies of the great leaders who fought for independence and shaped the society we have today.

Mrs. Magara expressed her gratitude to all participants for their dedication to preserving Nkrumah’s legacy. She said that their presence was a testament to their commitment to the shared cause of preserving and promoting Kwame Nkrumah’s legacy whose ideals are vital for shaping a future where Africa stands united and strong.

Prof. Buyinza Mukadasi, the Acting Vice Chancellor of Makerere University, reaffirmed that Kwame Nkrumah remains a symbol of African pride. His vision and hope for a united Africa continue to inspire leaders across the continent and instill pride in Africans regarding their heritage and identity. He commended the students and residents of Nkrumah Hall for organizing the event, with support from the Office of the Dean of Students.

“I am very much delighted to join you all in celebrating the legacy and the day of birth of our African icon, the late Kwame Nkrumah. It is an indication that his ideals and legacy continue to inspire these generations. And for this, we shall be grateful for his contributions and his works for eternity,” he remarked.

Prof. Buyinza Mukadasi credited the Guest of honor, Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda for his contribution towards good leadership and revolutionary ideas. He also welcomed him and Maj. Gen. Henry Masiko back to Makerere University, their alma matter.

With profound pleasure, Dr. Winifred Namuwonge Kabumbuli, the Dean of Students at Makerere University, remarked that the name Kwame Nkrumah has stood the test of time, resonating like a beautiful horn across the African continent and beyond. She emphasized the importance of focusing on Nkrumah’s views on integration and Pan-Africanism that he championed and articulated to address the challenges of our time.

“Nkrumah saw all those things and realized that there was a need to have home-bred solutions to address the challenges of Africa in order to have a stable and strong nation. Therefore, this symposium aims to honor the legacy of Kwame Nkrumah as well as inspire a new generation of leaders to work towards a strong, prosperous, economically and politically strong African nation.

Kwame Rugunda, son of Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda and named in honor of the great Pan-Africanist Kwame Nkrumah, acknowledged the responsibility young people have to continue the work laid down by previous generations of Africans. He reiterated that while Kwame Nkrumah is celebrated as the father of Pan-Africanism, he also inherited the baton from earlier Africanists who championed the ideals of unity and cooperation across the continent.

“Kwame Nkrumah picked up the baton from a previous generation, leading Ghana to independence in 1957 and continuing the vital work of Pan-Africanism. As a remarkable champion for the continent, he eventually passed the baton to the next generation, including leaders like Dr. Rugunda and others. Our task as young people is to receive this baton and carry forward the significant mission of advancing the African cause,” Kwame Rugunda emphasized.

He called upon young Africans to contribute actively to the ongoing struggle for their destiny, unity, and Pan-Africanism. “If there is one lesson to take away from today, it is the importance of learning from those who came before us and playing our part in advancing the African continent. We must not look to the West or the East for our direction; we are the architects of our own destiny,” he concluded.

The celebration of Kwame Nkrumah at Makerere University serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring legacy of one of Africa’s greatest visionaries. His unwavering commitment to Pan-Africanism and unity continues to inspire generations, urging us to confront the challenges of our time with a collective spirit. Makerere university renews partnership with the cgiar to enhance equitable agrifood systems.

Makerere University and the CGIAR, in August 2024, renewed their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to accelerate efforts to create more inclusive agricultural systems in Africa. With funding of US$ 99,935 through the CGIAR GENDER Impact Platform , Makerere University will implement the activities through the Gender-responsive Researchers Equipped for Agricultural Transformation ( GREAT ) Project, co-implemented by the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and the School of Women and Gender Studies.

This renewed partnership focuses on developing and enhancing postgraduate training and research in gender and agrifood systems at Makerere University . This is in line with the broader aim of nurturing a cadre of gender-responsive agricultural researchers (both social and biophysical scientists), equipped to contribute to inclusive and effective agricultural systems that address the priorities of both women and men in Sub-Saharan Africa and beyond.

Dr. Florence Kyazze, the GREAT Principal Investigator, emphasized the significance of the MoU, stating that, “This renewed partnership is an opportunity to enhance the curriculum in gender and agriculture and align it with changing needs, the latest knowledge, and best practices in gender and agrifood systems”.  

In the new partnership, Makerere will initiate the development of a Masters program with an intermediary postgraduate diploma in gender and agricultural development. The interdisciplinary program taught by faculty members in the fields of agriculture, gender studies, rural development, and sociology, drawn from the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, the School of Women and Gender Studies, other relevant units of Makerere University , and other universities, will emphasize the integration of theory and practice.

The proposed program will embrace a blended and more flexible learning environment to enable learners to maneuver the multiple roles that balance school, work in gender and agrifood systems, and other spheres of life.  “It is important to equip students with the necessary tools and skills that can be used in real-life agricultural programming situations;  from research to community interventions and policy levels using flexible approaches to drive gender equality in agriculture ”, remarked Dr Kyazze.

The MoU marks a critical step in reinforcing the commitment of both institutions to promote gender-responsive agricultural innovations, ultimately fostering a more equitable and sustainable future for all, contributing to Sustainable Development Goals 2, 4, and 5.

About GREAT:

GREAT started as a 5-year collaborative capacity-building program between Makerere University and Cornell University in the USA with core funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (2015-2020). Co-led by Prof. Margaret Najjingo Mangheni (Makerere) and Prof. Hale Ann Tufan (Cornell), GREAT later transitioned into a broadened tripartite two-year partnership to include the OneCGIAR through the GENDER Impact Platform (2021-2023).

At Makerere University , GREAT is implemented by the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES) and the School of Women and Gender Studies (SWGS), with the secretariat at CAES.

Vision and strategy:

GREAT equips researchers to create more inclusive and effective agricultural systems by addressing the priorities of both women and men in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). From inception, the strategy to achieve this vision was through i) supporting Makerere University to become a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for gender-responsive agricultural research and training in sub-Saharan Africa (evidenced by adequate staff capacity, visibility, and high reputation in the region), ii) capacity building of researchers to conduct gender-responsive agricultural research, ii) fostering information exchange, dialogue and collaboration on gender-responsive research; and, iv) triggering support of gender-responsive research in the National Agricultural Research Systems (NARS) and building a cadre of champions – all which have been achieved to a larger extent.

Towards this vision, GREAT has:

• Strengthened ample technical capacity of 14 staff at Makerere University to conduct gender-responsive agricultural research and training;
• Established a track record for delivering high-quality courses evidenced by growing demand for fee-paying short courses beyond the BMGF grant.
• Established connections with renowned international scholars and experts in gender and agriculture who contribute to course offerings as short-term consultants based on need.
• Established strategic partnerships with various institutions such as the One CGIAR, US Universities- Cornell, Michigan State, University of Georgia, and National Agricultural Research Institutions of Uganda, Burundi, and Burkina Faso
• Delivered five (5) mainstream gender-responsive plant breeding (Level 1) courses, One (1) Level 2 course, One (1) gender-responsive plant breeding and seed systems in South Asia course, and 10 custom courses (tailored to suit clients’ needs)
• Trained a pool of 362 fellows drawn from Africa, South Asia, Latin America on gender-responsive agricultural research
• Published three special journal issues with over ten articles, and two trainers’ manuals on gender-responsive plant breeding
• Contributed to the enhancement of the curriculum on gender and agriculture-related course units at Makerere University taught by GREAT trainers
• Created various knowledge products and communication channels to amplify the visibility of the work on gender-responsive agriculture research.  
• Raised 3.58 million US Dollars in grants to Makerere University

The Master in Impact Entrepreneurship program caters to students who already hold a 4-year Bachelor or Master degree in any fields and wish to study entrepreneurship in an international setting.

Scholarships

Eiffel Scholarship

The Eiffel Excellence Program offers funding for a Master’s postgraduate degree course and PhD. It is run by the French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs. Focusing on three key subject areas of sciences, economics and management, law and political science, its primary aim is to offer scholarships in French higher education establishments to future public and private sector decision-makers in foreign countries. As regards the Master’s degree course, students pursuing careers in teaching and research are not eligible as they can benefit from other grant programs.

It also seeks to encourage applicants from developing countries, particularly in Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and the new EU Member States, although this does include industrialised countries for the PhD component. The Eiffel Programme is designed to help French higher education establishments attract high calibre overseas students. Only French higher education establishments can submit applications and, if successful, they must enrol the candidates in the requested courses to obtain the Eiffel grant.

Grant – 150 NOK or INR 15000 (Approx.) per year This scholarship in Norway is offered to all international students studying a Masters’s course at BI Norwegian Business School. The letter is expected not to exceed a single page. Along with this letter, your academic grades and previous experiences are considered also considered in the selection process.  

Grant – Covers entire tuition fee + Provides a stipend to cover the cost of living  Awarded to candidates with exceptional academic records, this scholarship in Norway is for all Master of Science students enrolled in the university. It is mandatory to have a grade of A on the ECTS scale or equivalent to apply for this scholarship. It is mainly offered to the 3rd year MS students. You have to submit a 1-page long scholarship essay covering all the essential points regarding your career plans and economic status. GMAT/GRE scores are also considered in the selection process. 

Grant – Covers entire tuition fee The Norwegian University of Science and Technology offers an exclusive scholarship to international students which covers the entire tuition fee of the course. The scholarship in Norway is for Master level courses only. It does not include the cost of living. It is mandatory to have at least a grade of C in your bachelor’s degree. Student Notebook: Applying for Research Funding as a Female International Student in Psychology

A recent review revealed that women received just under a quarter of all research fellowships or grants (Schmaling & Gallo, 2023). This systematic review analyzed data from 55 studies across 14 countries, including the United States, Canada, and countries in the European Union, from 1975 to 2020, and the authors examined gender disparities in grant award outcomes, success rates, and funding amounts. Their findings indicated that women led fewer awarded grants on average (24%) than men (76%), despite constituting 30% of the applicants.

Although success rates for grants led by women (23%) were comparable to those led by men (24%), female researchers received approximately half the amount of research funding per grant: Female researchers received an average of US$342,000, while male researchers received an average of US$659,000. This disparity highlights the need for grants and funding opportunities that not only provide the necessary resources for conducting impactful research but also empower international women to become leaders and role models in their academic communities. In this column, I outline funding options for international women studying psychology, and I provide a few tips to help strengthen your applications.

As a researcher, applying for funding is an important factor in advancing one’s academic and research career, especially for female international students in psychology. For these students, securing funding is important not only for their individual success but also for increasing diversity and representation in academia. Diversity enriches the field with varied perspectives and drives innovation . Research funding not only alleviates the financial burden of research expenses but also allows students to focus on their studies and research without the constant worry of funding. Being awarded a grant can significantly enhance a researcher’s career by investing in their skills and honing their research quality, making them more competitive for future academic and professional opportunities. By actively seeking and securing grants, international female researchers can also contribute to increasing the visibility and representation of women in their respective fields. This is vital for inspiring future generations of female scholars and researchers, and it helps to create a more inclusive academic environment where diverse perspectives are valued and integrated into mainstream research. 

Funding challenges  

Female international students often face limitations in the number of available scholarships and grants for their research and living expenses. For example, many grants from organizations such as the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) are inaccessible to international students because they do not meet the eligibility criteria. Observing peers receiving these opportunities can be disheartening for international students who are ineligible. The grants available to female international students are not only limited in number but also highly competitive.  

Support from organizations  

Despite the funding challenges, a few organizations offer funding specifically for female international students. Groups such as Graduate Women in Science (GWIS), the American Association of University Women (AAUW), and the Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO) provide significant funding opportunities to female international students. GWIS offers fellowships that support research in science, technology , engineering, and mathematics, including psychology. AAUW provides international fellowships for women pursuing full-time graduate or postdoctoral studies in the United States. PEO offers international peace scholarship funding for women who are seeking an advanced degree from an accredited college or university in the United States or Canada.  The GWIS National Fellowship provides US$10,000 to help cover a year of research costs. The PEO International Peace Scholarship gives US$12,500 for a year to female students to help with their living expenses.

The AAUW International Fellowship provides US$20,000 a year to master’s students, US$25,000 a year to doctoral students, and US$50,000 a year to postdoctoral students to support their research projects. Although these funding sources are available to female international students, they are limited and extremely competitive, and often students are unaware of these opportunities. However, if you have a strong application and are dedicated to your research, you can significantly increase your chances of success. Persistence, thorough preparation, and a well-crafted application that emphasizes the impact of your research can make a substantial difference in securing funding.  

Writing a successful funding application  

Writing a successful grant application requires strategic planning and meticulous attention to detail. One of the most critical aspects of a successful application is clearly articulating the significance and impact of your research because this demonstrates the value of your work, highlights its potential contributions to the field, and shows why it deserves funding or support. To better your chances of securing funding, focus on conveying how your research addresses a gap in the existing literature and its potential to contribute valuable insights to psychology. Your application should align with the goals and priorities of the funding organization, demonstrating how your research objectives resonate with their mission. For example, if you are applying for a grant that prioritizes community well-being , emphasize how your research can lead to improved support strategies that address unique challenges within specific populations I secured over US$60,000 in funding for my research in 3 years of graduate school as an international student. Based on my successful experience in securing research funding, I have provided some key steps below that will help you navigate the application process and increase your chances of success.  

Conduct thorough research. It is important to understand the purpose and selection criteria for the grant to ensure that your application aligns with the funder’s goals. The first step to creating a successful grant application is to review the agency’s mission and grant guidelines. For 4 consecutive years, I applied for the highly competitive American Association of University Women (AAUW) International Fellowship, which is a prestigious award for female scholars in psychology. Despite not being selected in my first three attempts, my perseverance paid off this year when I was awarded the fellowship to support a key research project in the area of gender income inequality. The key difference in my successful application was my thorough examination of the fellowship guidelines and my diligent effort to address every specific requirement and preference. This experience underscored the importance of thorough research in crafting a compelling application.  

Craft a compelling narrative. Highlight your research objectives, methodology, and expected outcomes. Make sure to clearly articulate the significance and impact of your research and how it aligns with the funding agency’s goals. For example, I conduct research on gender stereotypes , including gender income inequality and attitudes about female leaders. In my first 3 years of applying for the AAUW fellowship, I did not craft a compelling narrative even though my research focused on a subject relevant to the organization. Understanding how to strengthen my research narrative made a significant difference in my successful application this year. 

Organize your application. Make sure your application is well-organized, free of errors, and to the point. Avoid unnecessary jargon and keep your language clear. Clearly label each section and make your application easy to navigate. This helps reviewers find the information they need quickly and increases the chances of your application making a strong impression. 

Letters of recommendation. Another important aspect of your application is obtaining strong letters of recommendation. Secure these from esteemed academics who can provide compelling endorsements of your capabilities and underscore the significance of your research. Their external validation adds credibility to your application and strengthens your overall case. 

Seeking feedback. The last and most important step of grant writing is seeking feedback from mentors or colleagues who can provide valuable insights and help refine your application. Experienced researchers can offer guidance on improving the clarity and impact of your proposal. Revising your application based on their input can significantly enhance its quality.  

Benefits of funding for female international students  

International female students should make the most of grant and funding opportunities during their time in school for several compelling reasons. Firstly, securing financial support through grants can alleviate the stress of financial constraints, allowing these students to focus more intently on their academic and research pursuits. For example, I experienced firsthand how financial stability enabled me to dedicate more time and energy to my studies, leading to more impactful research outcomes and academic performance. This stability is particularly important for international students who may face limited financial resources and fewer employment opportunities compared to their domestic peers. 

In addition to relieving financial burdens, applying for and receiving grants can significantly enhance the professional development of international female students. Being awarded a grant not only validates a student’s research potential but also provides a competitive edge in the job market. Grants can lead to valuable networking opportunities, professional collaborations, and invitations to conferences and workshops, all of which are critical for career advancement. For instance, my grant funding opened doors to numerous academic and professional opportunities that would have otherwise been inaccessible to me, including cross-cultural collaborations, opportunities to attend prestigious conferences, and publications in reputable journals. Furthermore, a history of successful grant applications can make international students more attractive candidates for future funding, academic positions, and postdoctoral fellowships, ultimately contributing to their long-term career growth and success.
