2. Experience / Employment

In the experience/employment/work history section, you should list your previous roles in reverse chronological order, starting with the most recent.

Keep it concise and to the point; bullet points are great for this section as they make it easier for the reader to take in all of what you have written. When writing each point, try and include quantifiable results that demonstrate how successful you were at a particular task or job role.

For example, instead of saying “Provided care for elderly people,” say something like “Assisted 10+ elderly patients per day with personal grooming activities such as bathing, dressing & toileting while adhering to strict safety protocols.”

To write effective bullet points, begin with a strong verb or adverb. Industry specific verbs to use are:

Adding an education section on your resume depends on how far along you are in your career. 6. Contact Info

7. Cover Letter

To work as an aged carer in Australia, you will require a Certificate III in Individual Support, Home and Community Care or Disability Support, as well as a Blue Card and NDIS Workers Screening Clearance.

Once you have these qualifications, make sure they are highlighted in your resume. You might like to discuss the subjects you completed (especially if you did well), particularly if you are struggling to come up with enough work experience to fill out your resume.

Focus on Your Placements or Volunteer Experience

When looking to land your dream job, standing out from the competition can be done through a high-quality aged care resume .  Showing off your invaluable experience and aged care qualifications is essential. This post details how to perfect your aged care resume with examples. Regardless of whether you are looking to transition into the industry , seek a promotion, or are just entering the workforce, this resume builder can be adapted for multiple applications.

An aged care resume should be easy to read but thorough. Condensing your education, skills, and experience down into a one-to-two-page document isn’t the easiest task. We’ve put together an aged care resume example that does just that:

Writing a strong aged care resume

There are blanket rules when it comes to building an aged care resume. Make sure you include your:

  • Contact details (email address and phone number are ideal)
  • Location (suburb, postcode, and state are sufficient)

You can also add in your current job title underneath if you wish. These details should be included at the top and can be structured as you wish (see below for examples):

Do not feel obliged to include your gender or date of birth.

Your personal statement

Next, summarise your experience, aged care qualifications, and personality in a few sentences to introduce yourself. This can be a tricky task; getting all this condensed into a short paragraph is not easy. We would recommend:

  • Highlighting your qualifications and how you have actively put these into practice. Simply listing your qualifications won’t be as effective.
  • Mentioning skills and knowledge you have developed because of your current work or voluntary experience. This will show you’re proactive in personal development and are eager to learn.
  • Stating what you are looking for . Not necessarily salary wise, but you can talk about what you’re looking to get out of a new aged care role. Think about how this new position will benefit your career journey, as well as to the home you’re applying for.

Your aged care qualifications

This is the necessary part of your aged care resume. It must be included to show you have the education requirements for the role you’re applying for.

List the aged care qualification name, the institution, and the years qualified.

You can lay out qualifications in your aged care resume using the following method ( always from most recent to oldest):

As long as the layout you choose displays uniformity, you can change the alignment as you wish.

Your aged care work experience

This is potentially the most vital part of your aged care resume. Whether your experience is paid or voluntary, this is the perfect opportunity to highlight your skills and knowledge. It can also help you to stand out from your competitors.  When you’re creating this section, detail your most recent experience first. You can use the layout above but change it to include your title, place of work and when you worked there. If you’re still in this position, use ‘Current’ as your end date.

You can also split your experience into paid and voluntary roles if you’ve done plenty of voluntary work or don’t have much paid experience. Harness the job advertisement that you are applying for. If the advert hones in on a particular skill set or knowledge area, use this in your application. The experience you have should display the knowledge and the skills that the job description is looking for. Focus on the advertisement’s wants and needs and always back up your claims with examples.

Your skills

This is optional but can sometimes be a key part of an aged care resume. You may want to add a section that lists the skills that you’ve developed through your study or work experience. If you’re going to include this, make sure it is relevant otherwise it will seem that you’re short of things to say about yourself. You can bullet point these, or depending on the layout you have chosen, you can list them at the side of your resume (see example below).

Your references

References are non-negotiable. You need to make sure you have at least two clinical references (if possible) with their permission ready to go. However, you don’t necessarily need to have these on your aged care resume.

Adding in ‘References available upon request’ shows you’re able to fulfill the requirement whilst keeping your referee’s personal details confidential.

  • Remember what you’re applying for . Your resume shouldn’t be stagnant. Read the job advertisement properly and emphasise the skills and knowledge that the employer is looking for.
  • Sell yourself! Your resume is about you and what you bring to the table. Don’t be shy in advocating for yourself and highlight what you are great at.
  • Be honest. As tempting as it is to fabricate some points on your resume, this will ultimately hinder your application. If you don’t have the amount of experience they’re asking for, don’t say that you do. Instead, focus on what you do know and emphasise why you’re the ideal candidate, experience or not.
  • Don’t be afraid to apply for jobs that you don’t meet the exact requirements for. You will need the relevant aged care qualifications, but lacking experience in a certain area shouldn’t necessarily be a reason not to apply. Many employers will consider your application if you display the right attitude, enthusiasm, and willingness to learn.
  • Use the correct formatting. Choose a clear font, a good size text (11 works well), bolding for headers and bullet points for structure. Having a resume that looks good gives the employer all the more motivation to read it
  • Proofread your resume. A resume with mistakes doesn’t look professional and may be neglected, no matter how much of a strong candidate you are.

How to format a Caregiver  resume

Having a properly formatted resume is more important today than before. Many companies are using applicant tracking systems (ATS)  to help sort through the hundreds of resumes they receive for a single position.  

The first step to scoring well with the software is to use the proper margins, spacing, and fonts . These are all standard settings when you create a new document in Microsoft Word, GoogleDoc, or other word processing programs, so no need to worry about setting them. In case you’d like to know what they are, the standard format is:

  • Margins are one-inch all around
  • Line spacing is single-space
  • Font size is set to 10 or 11 points

When listing your education and resume experience, you want to list them in a reverse chronological order, which is the standard for all resumes.

You also want to use a serif or sans serif font. The resume experience  section is where you will list professional and non-professional caregiver experience that relates to the job you are applying for. For each job, you will list the job title, company, or family name, dates of employment, location, and a bullet list of job details

As you create this section, keep in mind some of the common mistakes that caregivers make when adding past work experience:

  • Using vague descriptions when describing details of past work
  • Lack of showing quantifiable  achievements
  • Not tailoring their experience to the job description

Another thing you want to include is a description of the company or work environment. Just listing the name Roseview Home does not indicate whether they cared for one person or multiple.

Let’s try adding in some more details to improve this resume experience:

  • • Assisted 35 residents ages 70 to 89 with daily living activities that include, bathing and dress, eating, and medication administration
  • • Assisted in prepared meals and snacks and ensuring they follow each residents’ medical or dietary restrictions
  • • Supported and encouraged residents to participate in daily mental and physically stimulating activities and exercise programs to build strength and dexterity and restore any lost functions
  • • Monitored vitals and updated doctors of residents condition and maintained a calm demeanor when updating resident’s family of any changes to their health
  • • Provided basic cleaning and service on monitoring devices, wheelchairs, and bathroom aides, in addition to basic housekeeping duties
  • • Able to lift and turn patients of up to 150 pounds
  • • Participated in games and social events with residents, including various activities like playing guitar, reading stories, and board games

From this example, we get a clear example of this person’s performance and some of the tasks they did to help their patients.

This example clearly shows:

  • They have experience in a large care facility and can manage multiple patients effectively
  • The specific details on the duties they performed and how those tasks benefited their patients
  • The types of medical equipment they are comfortable working with
  • Demonstrates how they can talk with medical professionals and family members to discuss health issues
  • Shows how they adapt their creative talents to keep residents entertained and mentally active

Caregivers will sometimes have gaps in employment due to caring for family or for other personal reasons.

Caregiver burnout is a real condition. According to the National Alliance for Caregivers and AARP Public Policy , 40% of professional and nonprofessional caregivers felt emotionally stressed, while 20% felt physical duress.

Using numbers to quantify the impact of your resume experience is an excellent way to show off how your skills benefited your last employer.

When applying for a new job, the environment of the position will determine how you quantify your results.

If you are applying for a large care facility, you can say, “Improved patient mobility by 25% using proven physical therapy techniques.” Whereas if you are applying for a job in a family home, you can instead say, “Encouraged and assisted patients in exercise programs that allowed them to walk unassisted for 20 minutes longer than before.”

Here are some examples of how caregivers can use numbers and percentages to quantify the impact of their work:

Caregivers with five or more years of experience will write a resume summary. This will summarize your work experience along with how that experience makes you the perfect candidate for the role.

A resume objective is for caregivers with little to no real-world caregiver experience and who are looking for their first caregiver position. It focuses on their career goals and passions and their willingness to learn.

A final note about your resume summary or objective.

Writing this section last is the best choice, as you will want to tailor this section to the specific job. You can include keywords from the job description in this section so that recruiters can see you have the experience they are looking for right away.

Additional sections for a Caregiver resume

In addition to the five main sections of your resume, there are a few other ways you can add any relatable work experience and skill set. Some additional sections to consider include:

  • Spoken language – Many care facilities will have patients who speak different languages. Add this section if  the job description calls for knowledge of other languages.
