Vedha : Can I tell you a story sir?

Vikram : The silence is too deafening, huh?

Vedha : You look really smart when you smile, sir.

Vikram : But you will look very pathetic if you smile without your front teeth! Don't laugh. Camera is switched off... I'll smash you! Just my arm will swell up a bit... nothing much!

Vedha : Sir, will you treat your guest this way? Vedha no violence sir!

Vikram : Why did you surrender?

Vedha : Just wanted to tell you a story, sir. My own story sir!

Vikram : Your kind of guys just have one story, right? I was down and out... like a mongrel on the mean streets. Did this and that... and grew to be a big man. It's that story, right?

Vedha : Wow! How did you do it sir? Did you watch my whole life unfurl in my own eyes?

Vikram : Can I tell you something about yourself? If I give you 10 crores today in exchange for you quitting your profession you will refuse the offer and walk out. Only to go home and plot a way to grab the money from me! That's you!

Vedha : The same 10 crores, if I give you in exchange for letting me go... Will you let me go sir? You will just send me away and plot to encounter me! That's you, right?

Vikram : Hah, good one!

Vedha : However, you see it, we are both one and the same!

Vikram : How will having just a tail make a cat and mouse the same?

Vedha : Sir, the cat has value only till there's rat problem in the house!

Vikram : But this mouse surrendered fearing the cat, right?

Vedha : But, will any mouse voluntarily walk into a trap?

Vikram : That's right. We're not talking about some simple mouse here, it's actually a bandicoot who has murdered 16!

Vedha : You are not such a simple cat yourself, sir. A cop cat who has encountered 15!

Vikram : 18.

Vedha : Sir, that last encounter... you killed the guys? OK sir. You are in the lead. Killed 18; Killed 16... Convinced?

Vikram : Nah... Criminal! Police... I'm on the right side of line; you on the other.

Vedha : OK sir, I accept. I'm the bad guy; you're the good one. But to project yourself as a good man, you do need a bad man like me!

Vikram Vedha movie review: Madhavan-Vijay Sethupathi's film is filmmaking at its best

Vikram Vedha is the big Tamil release this year. Will it live up to the hype? Here is our Vikram Vedha movie review.

Vikram Vedha Cast: R Madhavan, Vijay Sethupathi, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Shraddha Srinath and Kathir

Vikram Vedha Director: Pushkar Gayatri

Vikram Vedha is a freestyle adaptation of the famous tales of Vikram and Betal. You know the story. We have all grown up with these characters. But how you present the same story is the question. We've had filmmakers who have tried several forms of storytelling. But re-telling a story with the same effect is perhaps the reason why Vikram Vedha stands out. Pushkar-Gayatri's version of Vikram Vedha is one such smartly-written thriller, which has a texture, well-developed character arcs and filmmaking gimmickry.

In some ways, they are mirror images of each other. There's a nod to The Dark Knight because of their character arcs. The battle here is between minds, and not fists. Madhavan and Vijay Sethupathi are not your regular hero and villain. They're not regular actors either. The cinematic high you get when you watch Madhavan and Vijay, who have no craving for stardom, fighting against their sensibilities, is perhaps the soul of Vikram Vedha.

Vikram is an encounter specialist who is far from your stereotypical masala hero who gets a slo-mo shot after a shootout. Here, Vikram pops a cigarette, leaves for home and sleeps with his wife like a perfect gentleman. The interesting link is that his wife, Priya (Shraddha Srinath), is a lawyer. In short, they're a match made in...court.

Take this scene for instance, Vikram's friend Simon (Prem) sets him up with Priya. Vikram walks out after knowing that she's a lawyer. Priya too hates police officers. Both head straight to a bar. Vikram and Priya order whiskey on the rocks. The director allows you to live the moment. The scene is not mawkish. They smile and hit it off immediately. It gets better in the scene after their marriage. It's their first time. There's a hush in the room. Vikram says, " Thungalama? " To which, Priya says, " Happa...padukalam ." Note: They don't mean sleep literally. Thanks to the director duo, this is what we have been missing these days.

Vikram Vedha is a simple story made on a colossal level. Much like folklore, each time Vikram comes close to pinning him down, Vedha narrates a backstory, which leaves us dizzy. The game, however, is intriguing. But Pushkar-Gayatri doesn't want you to judge who's right or wrong. It's not about Vikram and Vedha, but the story you choose to believe. R Madhavan as Vikram is on a hunt to nab Vedha, a small-time gangster-turned-kingpin. There are certain things that Madhavan can do that Vijay cannot. Madhavan's range is unimaginable. Taunt him, and he explodes like a bottle of champagne.

It isn't difficult to see why Pushkar and Gayatri are enamoured by cinema. There's an ingenuity in their films. In Vikram Vedha, you tend to enjoy certain bits better, especially if you're a fan of their Va Quarter Cutting -- a genuinely written black comedy that misfired.

For instance, Vedha's brother Puli (Kathir) asks him to quit everything. Vedha gives his word. Puli says, "Thank you". Vedha is a doing brother before a gangster. He innocently asks, "Naa enna sollanum" . Puli teaches him to say 'No mention'. In the next shot, Vedha, inadvertently, says "Hi" to an old lady. The stretch left the audience in splits. This is the kind of role that Vijay Sethupathi can sleepwalk through in films.

The problem with the film is that you start rooting for both Vikram and Vedha in the last half hour or so. I loved the portion where Puli slaps his girlfriend Chandra (Varalaxmi SarathKumar) and she gives one back. Chandra is two years elder to Puli, who stands with his pants down and says, "Aambala aanalum...pombala aanalum amanama ninadha kovam podium." It's a casual line that reiterates the fact that we're in a Pushkar-Gayatri film.

When Pushkar-Gayatri made their last film almost a decade ago, Tamil cinema was in a different territory. Vijay Sethupathi was trying to make inroads into Tamil cinema, while Madhavan was basking in the success of 3 Idiots. Things have changed. The audience enjoys different a kind of films now. Being relevant in cinema is important too. That said, if Vikram Vedha is is the result of 10 long years of a sabbatical, there's no harm in waiting. Welcome back, Pushkar-Gayatri! We have missed you.

In an alternate perspective, Vikram Vedha reminds of a quote from Kurosawa's Rashomon: "In the end, you cannot understand the things men do."

Vikram Vedha on Jio Cinema Review: Hrithik Roshan and his Beard Do Their Best to Distract You from the Flaws of this Remake

Vikram Vedha on Jio Cinema Review: Hrithik Roshan and his Beard Do Their Best to Distract You from the Flaws of this Remake

Directors : Pushkar-Gayatri

Writers : Pushkar-Gayatri

Cast : Hrithik Roshan, Saif Ali Khan, Radhika Apte

Even though it follows the original storyline with unwavering faith and is helmed by the same writers and directors, the Hindi version of Vikram Vedha is, on paper, not a Xerox copy of the 2017 Tamil film. While R. Madhavan and Vijay Sethupathi played cop versus gangster in the grey-toned metropolitan clutter of modern Chennai, the Hindi Vikram Vedha is set in Lucknow and Kanpur, which directors Pushkar-Gayatri depict as peak, north Indian exotica: Mughal architecture; a palette of saturated, warm colours; labyrinthine slums with brightly-painted buildings; Ram leela actors and explosive Dussehra celebrations in the background; Hrithik Roshan prowling with his trademark, feline grace in the foreground. Technically, all this should serve to make the Hindi Vikram Vedha look and feel different from the original. Yet barring Roshan’s solo action sequences, there are few moments in this remake that don’t make you nostalgic for the original.

It’s not that Vikram Vedha isn’t competently made. To begin with, there’s Pushkar-Gayatri’s clever script, which takes the legend of Vikram-Betaal and transposes it into a modern-day thriller. Vikram ( Saif Ali Khan ) is a trigger-happy police officer who is known for his single-minded determination to wipe out bad guys. On one hand, he seems incorruptible. On the other, he doesn’t hesitate to plant evidence to make the victim of an encounter look like the aggressor, even though it was Vikram and his team that entered the scene, guns blazing. The man that Vikram is looking for is Vedha (Roshan), the craftiest gangster of the Lucknow underworld. When Vedha walks up to a police station and surrenders voluntarily, Vikram knows there’s more to this than meets the eye. It turns out Vedha has his own agenda and it begins with a simple request: “Can I tell you a story?” Twisty, intelligent, packed with complex characters and punctuated with excellent stunts, the script of Vikram Vedha is an actor’s dream.

Add to that Pushkar-Gayatri’s directorial flair. The duo has a gift for crafting moments that convey information to the audience without spoon-feeding and with style. For example, they weave beloved songs from vintage Bollywood films into the background score as a stylish hat-tip to the music that has been the soundtrack to our lives for at least two generations now. Combined with the slow-mo that is distinctive of the south Indian action spectacle, the filmmaking in Vikram Vedha often feels like a cinematic version of the famous slogan of ‘unity in diversity’. This is not a bad thing. Neither is the sight of Roshan and Khan — both ageing aesthetically — striding across a screen or towards the camera. Considering how handsome both these actors are, you wouldn’t think that covering half of their faces with beards would be an improvement, but it turns out that less sometimes really is more.

However, while they are worthy poster boys for middle-aged sex appeal, neither actor is able to excel as you’d expect them to. Khan’s Vikram is not just flat and uncharismatic, he also has one of the unwittingly funniest moments in the film when an idea sparking in his head is mirrored by the sparks that literally fly because he’s using a welding machine. We’ve seen Khan bring out complex, flawed characters before in films like Omkara (2006) and the first season of the streaming series Sacred Games , but despite being gifted a beautifully-written role, he fails to bring that magic as Vikram.

In sharp contrast, Roshan dominates every scene he appears in with his sheer physicality. Yet he has little chemistry with any of his co-stars. His solo scenes crackle with charm as though the real rapport is between the star and his audience. Few actors are as graceful as Roshan and the actor can make everything, even being beaten up, look elegant. So what if he’s a low life from a Kanpur slum, when he’s being pummelled within an edge of his life, Vedha’s legs are ramrod straight, his torso curves with fluid dignity and his toes are so perfectly pointed it would probably bring a single tear to a ballet dancer’s eyes. You can tell Roshan is enjoying himself in Vikram Vedha and he is a joy to watch — but what we see on screen is a star revelling in the way he can command attention rather than Vedha, who is a man grappling with grief and obscuring his pain and darkness with a façade of mischief and menace. Roshan is the only who delivers memorable moments in the Hindi Vikram Vedha , but they’re all instances of the actor’s impressive physical abilities — like the scene in which he navigates a path across the rooftops of a slum — rather than Vedha’s character or personality.

vikram vedha 2017 movie review

It doesn’t help that the supporting cast, despite looking their parts, all feel strangely generic and flat. Whereas supporting roles like those of Vikram’s colleague and Vedha’s brother felt crucial in the Tamil original, in this Hindi version they fail to make any impact. Radhika Apte, playing Vikram’s wife and Vedha’s lawyer, looks lovely but has no chemistry with her star co-actors, and she fades from memory the moment her scenes end. The cops and gangsters who make up Vikram and Vedha’s posses feel like a blur of moustaches, rather than distinct individuals. Vikram Vedha needs the audience to care about these minor characters, especially the ones that are reduced to becoming dead bodies. When a lethal bullet reaches its target, the film needs you to feel the impact, but this doesn’t happen in the Hindi version. Instead, the film feels like a star vehicle for Roshan and the deaths become monotonous. Consequently, whenever Roshan isn’t on screen to dazzle us with his athleticism, Vikram Vedha lags.

Usually in mainstream Hindi cinema, it’s the writing that fails the actors and directors. However, that’s not the problem in Vikram Vedha . The film’s cleverly-constructed plot is good enough to hold an audience’s attention, particularly if they haven’t seen the original. Yet, despite the strength of the script, it feels as though Pushkar-Gayatri’s direction has lost some of its gleam in translation. More worryingly, the cast of the Hindi Vikram Vedha can’t capitalise on a script that is ripe with potential and opportunities. We’ve seen the Tamil cast milk this story for all its dramatic worth. It’s worth wondering why Bollywood’s actors struggle to do the same.

Vikram Vedha review: a work of sheer brilliance

Madhavan and Vijay Sethupathi

That moment when Pushkar and Gayathri were struck with the idea to shape their new film in the mold of the fables of Vikramaditya and Vetal must have been epiphanic, for any filmmaker in the country who grew up listening to the magical tales. We don't know if the director couple chose to fit their gangster story into the fable mode at a later stage. In any case, the outcome is a work of sheer brilliance by two filmmakers, who know the perfect blend of style and substance when it comes to pop culture.

Skin it deep, you have a typical gangster drama, which has its balanced share of action, revenge, and romance. Yet what makes Vikram Vedha special is its treatment, performance and the perfect weaving in of a philosophical subtext, which you seldom come across in popular cinema.

 alt=

Pushkar, Gayathri wedded to the same dream: Maddy

The ever-impish madhavan turns ebullient as he....

Vikram (R. Madhavan) is an encounter specialist cop, and a sincere one to be specific. Then we have Vedha (Vijay Sethupathi), a notorious gangster. In other words, we have the hunter and the prey, ready with their convictions of duty, responsibility, and ethics.

Madhavan and Shraddha Srinath

In the course of action that follows, such convictions are put to test, each time with a question that ends the tales of Vedha, the modern day Vetal. The complex, yet neatly and tightly woven narrative comes to a close with an open ending that would surely leave you in a quandary for at least a few moments.

Just like their characters, Madhavan and Sethupathi compete with and complement each other when it comes to performance. Their penchant for subtlety explores the gray area of the characters who were presented as the personifications of the good and the bad in the beginning.

Vijay Sethupathi

Varalaxmi, Hareesh Peradi, and Shraddha Srinath offer a realistic portrayal of their characters. The script, by the directors themselves, is well-nigh perfect with its neat handling of the various settings and characters with moderate emotions.

This is one of those few films whose BGM thrills you so much that it reverberates in your ears even after the show ends.

If you are in search of a movie that makes sense even as it keeps you thoroughly entertained, go grab your ticket for V-V.

Vikram Vedha Review: Hrithik Roshan And Saif Ali Khan Deliver Standout Performances

A still from Vikram Vedha trailer. (courtesy: T-Series )

Cast: Hrithik Roshan, Saif Ali Khan, Radhika Apte, Rohit Saraf, Yogita Bihani

Director: Pushkar and Gayatri

Rating: 3 Stars (out of 5)

A remake is a remake even if it overruns with style and swag. Banish that thought and calibrate your expectations accordingly and Vikram Vedha , Pushkar and Gayatri's reshaping of their own 2017 Tamil smash hit of the same title, is a meaty mass entertainer that packs quite a punch.

Working with a screenplay that has yielded dividends before and banking on a pair of Bollywood stars who give a solid account of themselves, the directing duo cash in handsomely on the film's intelligently assembled resources.

Minor tweaks in the story, a drastic backdrop change and Hindi dialogue that alternates between the conversational and philosophical enable them to craft a movie that not only does not appear like a once-too-often exercise but also possesses the potential to pull the crowds in.

Saif Ali Khan and Hrithik Roshan face off in a battle of attrition that is crammed with intrigue and energy, what with an array of characters orbiting around the cop and the criminal engaged in penetrating mind games. The two male leads, on their parts, deliver performances that stand out amid the orchestrated din.

Fleshing out characters that have been drawn from a centuries-old folktale and placed in present-day Lucknow, the actors are aided in rising above the stereotypical nature of the two men - one a policeman, the other an urban brigand; one on the side of good, the other against it - by the out-of-the-ordinary situations and the questions of ethics and emotions that the screenplay hinges on.

Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Vikram (Khan) is drafted into a special task force and pressed into an operation aimed at nabbing the sly and slippery Vedha (Roshan), who lords over the Lucknow underworld and keeps the law enforcers on their toes.

Vikram Vedha kicks off with a shootout in which a few gangsters are killed, which sparks off a round of violent confrontations between the STF and the vengeful Vedha. The end of violence seems nigh when the dreaded Vedha turns himself in to the police.

Vedha's surprise move is only the beginning. He has more up his sleeves than the cops anticipate. One of his trump cards is lawyer Priya (Radhika Apte), who happens to be Vikram's wife. A woman doing her job, her husband doing his and the two at loggerheads with each other - this recipe for marital discord adds a layer to the story that occasionally yanks it away from the hurly-burly of the police station and deposits it within the walls of domesticity.

Thrice in the course of the narrative, delivered as a series of flashbacks that spring out of twisted and protracted tales that Vedha narrates to Vikram, the cop is close to eliminating (or at least outwitting) the criminal. Each time, the latter convinces the former to hear a story rooted in his own life. Every story ends in the manner of a fable with a question of moral import centred on good and evil, the nature of crime, policing and culpability, and the dynamics of revenge and justice.

Inspired by the folktale Baital Pachisi in which King Vikramaditya sets out to capture a wily demon who repeatedly foxes the righteous ruler with riddles on whose answers their fate rests, Vikram Vedha transports the mythic tale to the capital city of Uttar Pradesh.

Lucknow, with its historic structures, has a key role in the film if only as a physical setting that gives the film a distinctive visual texture just as Chennai did in the original Vikram Vedha.

At three specific junctures, the police officer is forced by Vedha to confront an ethical dilemma regarding his role as a defender of the law and his firm belief that none of the encounter deaths he has caused was of an innocent man.

If you are among those that have seen the Tamil-language original, be warned that this is by and large a scene-by-scene, line-by-line reiteration that is 20 minutes longer than the Madhavan-Vijay Sethupathi starrer. The film's ability to startle and shock is therefore severely curtailed. But if you are unaware of the plot, Vikram Vedha has enough twists and turns to hold your attention all the way through.

Pushkar and Gayatri, perhaps the only husband-wife duo of directors in Asia, do well not to tinker with a successful construct. They fall back on not only the same Sam C.S. background score to shore up the action on the screen, but also on the director of photography (P.S. Vinod) and the editor (Richard Kevin).

While the cinematographer has to make significant adjustments to factor in a new location and a significantly altered production design, the editor is not required to do much that he has not done once before. But familiarity does not take anything away from Vikram Vedha .

Thanks to a new setting - Lucknow serves as a strikingly evocative backdrop to the fast-paced crime drama - and a fresh set of actors, Vikram Vedha has a colour palette of its own. Despite its length, it never feels stodgy or sluggish. The credit for that accrues as much to the technicians as to the writers (the directors themselves).

If comparisons are to be made no matter how odious they may be, Saif Ali Khan makes a far better Vikram. He inhabits the character of the tough cop with conviction and exudes the external toughness that defines the man and his mission.

Hrithik Roshan, who refrains from modelling his performance on that of Vijay Sethupathi, harnesses his star appeal and screen presence to deliver the goods and then some. It is well-nigh impossible to go one better on the inimitable Vijay Sethupathi. Roshan does not even try and that stands him in good stead.

With two major Bollywood stars powering the film, the actors in the supporting roles suffer just a touch. Be that as it may, Radhika Apte, stepping into Shraddha Srinath's shoes as Vikram's lawyer-wife, Satyadeep Mishra playing Vikram's police academy mate SSP Abbas Ali (replacing the Tamil film's Simon), and Sharib Hashmi in the role of Vedha's foe-turned-friend-turned-foe Babloo add their mite to the film.

The characters played by Rohit Saraf and Yogita Bihani - Vedha's younger brother and the girl in his life - somehow do not seem to make the impact that Kathir and Varalaxmi Sarathkumar did in the same roles in the 2017 movie. But these are but small blips in a power-packed, compelling action thriller that knows exactly what it is getting at and achieves its ends with aplomb.

Director duo Pushkar and Gayathri, has demonstrated through their earlier films Oram Po and VA Quarter Cutting, their quirky style of filmmaking. In their third directorial Vikram Vedha, Madhavan and Vijay Sethupathi join them for a brilliantly written story that is bound to satisfy the audience from all corners.

This is for all those who do not know about the Vikramaditya-Vedhal stories. In these tales, Vedhalam is being carried by King Vikramaditya and the former narrates a story to the latter and upon its culmination, a tricky question is put forth to the king. If Vikram keeps mum despite knowing the answer, his head would be blasted to pieces. This is the basic knot around which Pushkar and Gayathri have spun their gangster tale and in due course, poses a query of dharma and adharma too.

Right from the word go, Vikram Vedha begins on a clever note and maintains it till the end. It is a long time since we saw a writing that trusted the audience’s intelligence and respected them too. Kudos Pushkar-Gayathri!

It is said that a film is 90% done when it has the apt casting and Vikram Vedha can boast from the rooftop on this feat. What a performance by the leads Madhavan and Vijay Sethupathi! Amazing demonstration of their skills! It is to the credit of both these artists that they have chosen a story that has two leading heroes. It clearly shows the confidence and secure feeling they have towards their respective crafts. There are quite a few scenes where Vijay Sethupathi sashays through his role effortlessly and gains the applause- his body language, dialogue delivery, movement of his facial muscles and his nonchalant swag. Hats off to Maddy for giving the space for another actor to score. It is a delight to watch these seasoned actors perform. The supporting cast of Shraddha Srinath, Kathir, Varalaxmi, Prem and others have all done a brilliant job.

Dialogues are one of the many highlights of the film  and they exude sharp wit, sarcasm, emotions and intelligence, a sample being- “Gandhi payyan Gandhiyaa, Godse payyan Godse yaa?” “Yen sir, indha factory ellaam , nejamavae yedhachum seyvaangala , illa namma maadhiri gangster sanda poda katti irukkaangala ?” There are plenty in the film like these to relish. Cinema is a visual medium and it does not need pages of dialogues to explain what is happening. This is evident throughout Vikram Vedha and the best one is when Maddy goes to Prem’s house to inform an important news.

Technically also, Vikram Vedha scores its brownie points. Sam CS’s tracks are a winner all the way and his BGM is at a different level in every scene. PS Vinod’s camera work is perfect in his sepia tones and in other scenes where his lens is reflective of the mood of the film.

As conveyed by the team, the film is all about good and evil, but the interesting aspect here is the difficulty in choosing the sides. So, when the film comes to end, you still wonder which is black and which is white and realize that most of it falls in the gray realms.

The writing is brilliant and deserves all the plaudits. The film’s narrative structure follows a pattern of Vijay Sethupathi narrating a story to Maddy and it suits fine in most occasions. But there could be a few who might feel it a little odd when a police officer stops to listen to a story by a criminal at a crucial juncture of the investigation. This again is a minor niggle and does not appear huge in the larger scheme of things. Summing up, Vikram Vedha is a very cleverly written, engaging story, carried on by the superb performances of its cast members and supported best by the technical department.

vikram vedha 2017 movie review

A beautiful song for the situation of love. Singer Pradeep Kumar who’s voice was magical in ‘Poo Avizhum’ sounds very impressive with Pogatha Yennavittu as well. It has some nice use of strings, Oud, flute and traces of violin as well. Nega Venugopal has a sweet voice and this compliments Pradeep’s beautiful vocals. Composer Sam CS has delivered a neat song in the melody genre. The latter half of the song is particularly beautiful as it has an emotional connect with the play of instruments.

Yet another track in this album which is completely ruled by the orchestra and no lyrics. The Chennai Orchestra takes total control of the track with an expert usage of the strings and arranges a haunting score. Singers Sam C S, Sethu Thankachan, Kannan M & Ravikumar hum their bits with total robust rage.

Vikram Vedha movie review: Don’t miss this thriller starring Madhavan, Vijay Sethupathi

Vikram vedha movie review: the crime drama starring madhavan, vijay sethupathi is by far the best film to release in tamil this year so far. the film is directed by pushkar-gayathri and the film is inspired by the mythological characters of vikram and betaal..

vikram vedha 2017 movie review

Vikram Vedha movie cast:  Madhavan, Vijay Sethupathi, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Shraddha Srinath Vikram Vedha movie director:  Pushkar-Gayathri Vikram Vedha movie rating: 4 stars

Nearly 30 minutes into the film, we are introduced to Vedha (Vijay Sethupathi), a wanted gangster, who is being hunted by a unit of encounter specialists headed by Vikram (R. Madhavan). The police team put together a huge force as they gear up to storm the hideout of Vedha based on a tip off they received. And that’s when Vedha walks into the police compound with a snack in his hand. He is there to surrender himself to the police.

vikram vedha 2017 movie review

It’s for the first time Vikram and Vedha come face to face with each other in flesh and blood. While Vikram’s introduction was very subtle, Vedha gets a mass hero introduction. Vikram and Vedha are bound together on a journey that questions the well-established moral compass of the society that helps one to tell good people from bad ones.

Vikram is a ruthless police officer, who has killed many criminals in his illustrious career. He thinks he can identify who is a criminal just by looking at someone’s eyes. This very confidence of Vikram is shattered as Vedha begins to unravel the flaws in the former’s judgements with a series of personal stories that gradually unveils a much bigger conspiracy in the story.

Vedha is also ruthless when it comes to being a gangster. But he has a sentimental and righteous mind that allows him to identify a good egg from the rotten ones. For Vikram, there is only right and wrong, good and evil, and there is no in between. Vedha, with stories of his personal tragedies, teaches Vikram to appreciate the nuances of a situation before arriving at a conclusion. Maybe that’s the reason director duo Pushkar-Gayathri have shown Vedha’s character with a lot of grey hair, which traditionally signifies one’s wisdom.

Festive offer

Pushkar and Gayathri, who are also married to each other, has written Vikram Vedha based on the mythological characters of Vikram and Betaal, which were made famous through folklore. The film questions the criminal justice system of the country and its dubious methods that are vulnerable to corruption and manipulation.

It’s highly difficult not to love Vedha’s character, thanks to his wisdom and never-say-die attitude. While Vikram is naive and sort of represents the general public that easily judges one’s character without knowing the entire story.

Madhavan and Vijay have competed with each other in delivering intense and convincing performances. However, it is Vijay that manages to draw the applause and whistles from the audience for his natural performance.

Cinematographer PS Vinod’s past experience in working on gangster movies have come handy for Vikram Vedha. His camera work complements the thrilling narrative of this crime drama.

It’s by far the best Tamil film to release this year so far. And it is the movie you should not miss this week.

Vikram Vedha Review [2017] – A Well-made Pulpy Crime Thriller

The events that change one’s life don’t always happen with perceptible slowness. It may not often provide breathing space for a person to react as per their gut feelings. But a good cinema keeps moral questions at the fore, bestowing us with a moral compass in a world that’s bafflingly gray. Husband-wife directing duo Pushkar & Gayathri’s crime thriller Vikram Vedha (2017) pits a clean-handed police officer against a remorseless gangster, although the adjective which describes their character nature is put into question by string of freshly unearthed predicaments and moral dilemmas.

Tamil movies often find it hard to create mass entertainers with two strong male leads; partly due to the excessively demanding star persona and flat characterization. The spectacular leads – Madhavan and Vijay Sethupathi – and smart writing uproots those storytelling troubles to brings us an absolutely engaging entertainment. Pushkar-Gayathri propels their characters through mordantly funny and pulpy narrative structure. There are obvious flaws and familiarities in the approach, but it doesn’t exactly water down the narrative’s high-wire intensity.

Vikram Vedha

As an interpretation of popular child-lore Vikramadityan and Vetal, the film plays up with a police officer’s monochromatic vision of good and evil. Vikram (Madhavan) is an experienced cop who is part of a task force with a mission to eliminate the notorious Vedha (Sethupathi) and his gang. The film opens with a well-crafted encounter sequence where Vikram casually walks through an old building, effortlessly striking up conversation with other members of his force. Before long, he blasts through a door and shoots up all the gang members without any hesitation or remorse. Vikram later says he can soundly sleep after a successful encounter because he knows that world is better off without these gangsters. But already Vikram’s righteousness is brought to question, especially when he shoots down an alleged gang member who holds no weapon and tries to surrender. Vikram frames the crime scene to cook-up the perfect forensics report, and yet he fiercely believes to be on the right side of law .

When Vedha continues to elude Vikram’s men they plan a full crackdown on the gangster’s unassailable home ground in the North Chennai area. As the riot police deliriously move out of the station, geared-up for action, Vedha makes a calm entry (accompanied by a thunderous Bgm and deafening whistles in the audience section) into the police station to surrender. The scheming gangster with 16 murders to his name decides to play a mind game with his nemesis Vikram. He recollects key events from his life in brief episodes (starts with the punchline ‘Sir, oru katha sollata?’, ‘Shall I tell you a story?’) and at the end of each episode, Vedha poses a moral question and Vikram’s answer to each blurs the strict boundaries between good and evil. Furthermore, the specifics of the flashbacks may provide clues to Vikram to solve the mysterious present-day crimes.

The crux of the story is familiar and when the moral conundrums are solved it looks like a fairly simplistic tale. However, the twisty, non-linear narrative attaches interesting perspective to the otherwise thin story. Indian movies’ idea for anti-hero is always confined to ‘gangster with a golden heart’ definition. They do bad things for noble reasons. But in the characterization of Vikram & Vedha there’s no clear line delineating good from the bad. They possess certain right reasons but the means to achieve it predominantly rests in the morally grey area. Directors Pushkar-Gayathri’s previous two films (Oram Po, 2007 &Va Quarter Cutting, 2010) also explored the quirks and exploits of two lead roles, but the results were ultimately underwhelming. Now they have made their first unassailably well-crafted movie. Cinematographer PS Vinod and the directing duo brings double thrill in the scenes the two fine actors play off each other (employing simple yet effective over-the-shoulder & profile shots). The female characters — played by Shraddha Srinath  and Varalaxmi Sarathkumar — are also written well. They are as un apologetic as the tale’s men characters and play vital role in the proceedings rather than being used as eye-candy.

vikram vedha 2017 movie review

The confrontation scenes work perfectly because Madhavan and Sethupathi don’t worry about dwarfing each other. The words seem to spark out from their character’s intuition and gut feelings. While Madhavan underplays and internalizes the character, Sethupathi just goes with the flow, mixing bravado and craftiness in equal measures. Vedha is the dark pulsing heart of the film. Despite talking about dharma and posing moral questions to Vikram, Vedha does like to gun down rivals in broad daylight. Sethupathi keeps Vedha opaque, and at some point we really believe the character is capable of doing vile things with a smile. The film’s second-half is a full-fledged ‘Sethupathi the star’ show. Yet, his charming one-liners and the stylish walks doesn’t come at the expense of diluting the story flow. There are definitely some flaws in the predictable flashback, which more or less adheres to the rules of gangster-film grammar (sentiment, rivalry, drunken song, etc). The choreography of the violent face-off comes off as mere gratuitous actions. But the good thing is that Vedha’s past is fleshed-out in small episodes which never become tiring. The ending portions are smartly executed and the union of two opposing moral universes thankfully doesn’t lead to wan buddy movie territory. Even when the enemies’ identities are revealed and they are conquered, Vikram and Vedha are destined to stand at opposite sides, committed to do what they do best.

Armed with a clever script and fantastic lead performances, Vikram Vedha (147 minutes) offers a deliciously entertaining take on the standard cop and thief tale.

Vikram Vedha movie review: Hrithik Roshan, Saif Ali Khan's chemistry shines through in this masala action thriller

Vikram vedha movie review: hrithik roshan and saif ali khan make each other shine bright in an enjoyable--if somewhat sanitised--remake of the tamil cult classic action thriller..

Disclaimer: How you look at Vikram Vedha and analyse it largely depends on whether you have seen the Tamil original or not. The Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan -starrer is a remake of the 2017 Tamil hit, which had Vijay Sethupathi and R Madhavan in those roles respectively. The shadow of that cult classic looms large on the Hindi remake but to the credit of the directors Pushkar and Gayatri, the film manages to stand well on its own, delivering a taut storyline, impressive action, and some laughs. If you have seen the original, you may end up comparing the two too often to enjoy, but if you haven’t, you may even love the film. (Also read: Vikram Vedha directors Pushkar-Gayathri say film isn't copy of Tamil original )

Vikram Vedha movie review: Saif Ali Khan and Hrithik Roshan star in this enjoyable remake.

Vikram Vedha is loosely based on the folktale of Vikram-Betaal. Vikram (Saif Ali Khan), here, is an officer in the Uttar Pradesh Police STF while Vedha ( Hrithik Roshan ) is a gangster who lords over Lucknow. In their cat-and-mouse game, Vikram comes face to face with Vedha thrice. But each time, a riddle posed by Vedha forces him to re-evaluate what is right and wrong. Each of the answers also helps him solve a case he is working on. Surrounding this beautiful and layered folk-inspired script is an assortment of slick fight scenes and action sequences, and a Hrithik dance number. Quite simply, there is something for everyone here.

The Samurai Jack-inspired animated opening sequence sets the tone quite nicely before transporting us to Lucknow. It is an interesting choice of setting for the story, as far removed from the original’s Chennai as possible and yet desi enough to retain the earthy touch of the script. The film begins on a rather disjointed note with the first 20 minutes or so rather scrappy. But the story kicks into high gear as soon as the two leads face off for the first time. Their chemistry is crackling and the best scenes of the film are always when Vikram and Vedha are talking, not fighting, or shooting, but merely engaged in dialogue.

Maybe there is something to be said about the fact that the best part about a masala action film is its dialogues. That can be a good thing or bad, depending on what expectations you have from this film. But that is the signature of Pushkar and Gayatri. Their previous works (the original Vikram Vedha or that brilliant web series Suzhal) all worked best when the characters spoke and shared stories with each other.

The action does not disappoint though. Hrithik Roshan brings in a different kind of swag and style than Vijay Sethupathi’s Vedha. This one is more fluid, less amateur, but at times, also less imposing. The bottom line is that it is different enough to enjoy on its own, without comparisons. His fight scenes are beautifully choreographed and stylishly executed. The shootouts are cliched with once again the heroes walking around with some insane amount of plot armour. One can shoot at them with Kalashnikovs from a close range but nothing will hit them. That is so 90s.

The best parts of the film are scenes involving the two leads in conversation.

What Vikram Vedha gets right is how to balance a two-hero film. Invariably, in a cop and gangster film, the latter walks away with the whistles and all the crowd’s love. Bad guys are naturally more enigmatic. But Pushkar and Gayatri’s script makes sure Vikram gets his due too. It gives equal importance to the two, not letting one overshadow the other. Saif Ali Khan makes use of this opportunity well, stamping his authority on the scenes he gets. And in their scenes together, neither actor outshines the other. It’s like a dance, with both leading each other fluidly.

Both actors have said it’s their best work. Both are quite wrong. The performances here are decent and not a shade on what these gents managed in Omkara and Guzaarish. To their credit, they are good enough that you don’t miss Madhavan and Vijay Sethupathi too much. The support cast is strong, particularly Radhika Apte and Sharib Hashmi, the latter thankfully cast against type in a role that allows him to showcase his versatility.

The accents of the characters are a bit out of place at times, with many of them merging the Bihari-Maithili accent with the eastern-UP one to create something that isn’t spoken in either region. Saif and Radhika Apte’s prolific use of ‘hum’ and Satyadeep Mishra’s ‘ama yaar’ notwithstanding, the dialogue doesn’t help in transporting one to Lucknow and Kanpur. But the cinematography and script fills in those gaps. PS Vinod’s camera work brilliantly captures the rural-urban amalgamation of UP’s capital and marries it with this story almost seamlessly. Lucknow becomes a character in the film, almost.

Vikram Vedha is a stylised, blown-up, and somewhat sanitised remake of a cult classic. It needs to be all those things given its size and scale, and the star power it carries. The remake is choppy with some bits left out from the original, which may have made the film better. But the makers decided to opt for style over substance in some parts. The good thing is that it is not choppy enough to be noticeable or at least, annoying. Vikram Vedha works as both a thriller and a masala action flick. It is enjoyable and even manages a few whistles and claps in a packed hall. It will get you your money’s worth, even if that worth is not ₹ 75 anymore.

'Vikram Vedha' review: Hrithik Roshan comes in all guns blazing in this action drama

The star makes for a formidable antagonist in this bollywood remake of a tamil film.

Aarti Jhurani author image

It may be a remake, but Pushkar and Gayatri's testosterone-fuelled action film Vikram Vedha can stand on its own two feet, thanks in large part to Hrithik Roshan's engaging performance.

Directors: Gayatri, Pushkar

Stars: Hrithik Roshan, Saif Ali Khan, Radhika Apte

Rating:  3.5/5

The story takes inspiration from the ancient Indian legend of Vikram and Betaal, in which King Vikramaditya faces off against the demon Betaal, who outwits him again and again by entangling him in tales that end in riddles.

Vikram, played by Saif Ali Khan, is a virtuous police officer on the hunt for notorious gangster Vedha (Roshan). Caught up in a game of cat and mouse, each time Vikram gets close to nabbing his target, Vedha offers to tell him stories, which play out as flashbacks of his life.

To further complicate the storyline, Vikram's wife Priya (Radhika Apte) is Vedha's lawyer, which causes a high level of tension in several scenes.

But the film is not the simple battle between good and evil that the trailer would have you believe — there is more to it than meets the eye, and some of the best scenes are those in which the two lead characters face off over questions of morality, justice and the meaning of right and wrong.

The high-octane, occasionally gory drama is fast-paced, offering several twists and turns, and the stylistic slow-motion action scenes are done well, without veering into the monotonous.

The main track, Bande, plays intermittently throughout the film, adding the right amount of grunge and grit to the action scenes. The only dance number, added in an effort to “Bollywood-ise” the film, feels quite out of place and tips into the cringeworthy.

This Bollywood remake stays fairly faithful to the 2017 Tamil film starring R Madhavan as Vikram and Vijay Sethupathi as Vedha. It's almost a shot-for-shot remake — a safe move, given that the south Indian film did very well at the box office. Despite that, it is a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Roshan makes for a formidable antagonist in all his dishevelled glory, playing Vedha infinitely better than Sethupathi. He portrays the character with a swagger so impressive you cannot help but root for him.

Khan, on the other hand, pales in comparison to Madhavan's rendition of the character. Even if you see the Hindi film without watching the original, there is a sense of deja vu, as Khan played a similar role in the Netflix series Sacred Games .

Abu Dhabi stands in for Lucknow in the film. Twofour54's backlot in the Khalifa Industrial Zone was set up as the historical Indian city, and Al Wathba Wetland Reserve makes an appearance in a few scenes as well.

Whether or not you've seen the original, Vikram Vedha is certainly worth going to the cinema for, even if it's only to see Roshan in one of the best roles he has played in a while.

Vikram Vedha is in cinemas across the UAE on Friday.
