Ah, the million dollar question: How do you write an essay?

Well, it takes a lot more than crossing your fingers and blindly typing until 4 am, we can tell you that much.

The essay writing process can essentially be boiled down to three steps:

  • Essay research
  • Essay drafting
  • Essay proofreading/revision

But before we can dive into the nitty gritty of each of these stages, we’ll need to talk about structure.

After all, we can’t be throwing around terms like “body paragraph” without context. That would be cruel and unusual.

The Parts of an Essay

An essay is just a collection of paragraphs, right? And while this is an overly-simple way of explaining the structure, there is truth to it.

As we outline in our Paragraphing post, every essay has an introduction paragraph, 3-5 body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph.

The Introduction Paragraph

An introductory paragraph eases the reader into your topic. You’ll have a hook, a few context sentences, and your thesis, which consists of a stance on your chosen topic, and support points. This is the first impression your audience will get, so it’s got to be strong.

The Body Paragraphs

Body paragraphs are the meat and potatoes of any essay, so to speak. They are what come in between the introduction and conclusion paragraphs, and explain what you’ve stated in your thesis.

There is usually one body paragraph per supporting point/argument in the thesis (if we’re talking about a basic 5-7 paragraph essay).

The Conclusion Paragraph

The conclusion paragraph reminds the reader of your thesis and re-explains your supporting points (and, after having read the body paragraphs, the audience will have the context to decide if they agree with you or not).

This is where it gets extremely easy. This is what you’re here for. We’re about to break essay writing down into the simplest terms and most convenient definitions.

Step 1: Understand the Assignment

Seems obvious, no? You’d be surprised by how many people just jump into writing without fully understanding what they’re being asked to do or what the scope is.

It pays to know whether you’re shooting for 500 words or 2,500 words, so don’t skimp on this part. Understanding what you’re expected to deliver with regards to project scope, length, and formatting are really important.

Besides the details of the assignment, you should understand what type of essay you are being asked to write before you start writing .

If you don’t know any of these details, ask your instructor so you don’t waste time accidentally ruining your odds of stress-free essay creation.

The 4 Main Types of Essays

There are four main types of essays, which can each be broken down into more specific categories. However, for the sake of clarity and ease, we’re just going to be taking a look at the main four. They correlate almost exactly with the four writing styles , which we’ve covered previously.

The Narrative Essay

The best way to remember what a narrative is is to think of it as a story. Personal essays and book reports are both examples of narrative essays, because they follow and explain a clear narrative or motif.

The Argumentative Essay

This essay type slightly differs from its writing type parallel. Whereas persuasive writing relies on emotion and a strong knowledge of its audience, argumentative essays use facts and research to support their perspectives. Persuasive writing aims to get you on its side; argumentative essays aim to show you the logic behind their stances.

The Descriptive Essay

As its name implies, a descriptive essay is used to describe, or depict, something in great detail. These essays usually rely heavily on the senses and descriptive imagery.

The Expository Essay

This essay type is used to explain a topic. It differs from argumentative essays in that it does not aim to persuade or win the audience over to a particular side, but rather aims to inform and educate, as neutrally as possible.

Step 2: Brainstorm Ideas and Topics

Okay, so now you know how to write for a particular essay type, and now you need to figure out what to write to fit the assignment. It seems like a daunting task. It is not a daunting task.

The best way to brainstorm is to make a list. Good ideas, bad ideas—you’ll want them all. Check your inner editor at the door, because anything goes in a brainstorming session. Additionally, you can use the mind mapping technique during brainstorming, as it is highly effective, and you can build a mind map with a mind map maker to organize all your thoughts in the best possible way.

Let’s say you have to write a book report, which would fall under the narrative essay category. One way to figure out what specific theme or motif you want to talk about is by searching for topics related to your book.

Step 3: Find Your Angle

This just means “make it unique.” Your angle is your stance, essentially. If “UFOs” are your topic, for example, your angle might be “UFOs are nothing more than government aircraft,” or it might be “UFOs prove the existence of alien life.”

Of course, your angle is going to have to be backed up by outside evidence. A great way to find reliable sources, or even to find/refine your angle, is to have a summarizer tool sum up each article or source you find.

Step 4: Make an Outline

A lot of people skip this step; we suggest you do not skip this step.

Spoiler Alert: A lot of what makes essay writing so difficult for some people is skipping or skimping on the outline.

The beauty of an outline is that, once you write it, your job is simply filling in the gaps to create a fully-fledged paper. An outline helps you organize your thoughts or argument to set up a clear flow of ideas, note where you have supporting evidence already, highlight where you might need to add a section for clarity, or see where you need to find more evidence/sources.

Making a bulleted list is such an easy way to outline. Instead of trying to explain how it would work, I’ll just lay it out for you.

How to Outline, an Example

Once you have everything filled out in your outline, drafting will be easy. For some, this might be one of the hardest steps, especially if you dislike planning, but wow, does it pay off in the long run.

Drafting Topic Sentences in Your Outline

Want to go a little further? If you’re feeling the outlining vibe, keep up your momentum by adding more detail to your essay’s outline. For example, you could write out each of the topic sentences within your outline.

A topic sentence is the first sentence in a paragraph. It’s important because it needs to both act as a logical transition from the last paragraph but also explain to the reader what the overall message or the main points are for the paragraph.

The reason for drafting topic sentences within your outline is three-fold:

  • To make sure the transition between thoughts/paragraphs is smooth and logical
  • To make sure your points are flowing clearly from paragraph to paragraph and that your overall idea or argument is cohesive
  • To state what the paragraph is going to be about

Topic sentences can be a stumbling point when drafting because these babies have to multitask so hard.

Having them already written out in your outline, even just roughly, will make you feel like a superhuman drafter, skipping all those frustrating questions that arise in later stages of the process like: “What was I going for here?” and “Should that actually go after this point?”

Step 5: Write Your Draft

The biggest piece of advice that can be given for the drafting step is to not censor or edit yourself. Save that for the next step.

When you’re drafting, you want to stick to your outline and get it all out: your good ideas, bad ideas, and great lines. Don’t worry about overwriting. Just type, type, type.

Sometimes this is easier said than done. There are a lot of Writing Roadblocks that might try to stand in your way, such as writer’s block, procrastination, and imposter syndrome; there are also ways around these roadblocks.

Step 6: Edit, Edit, Edit

You’ve done it. You’ve written the essay. But now is not the time to celebrate. A pat on the back, maybe, but then it’s time to get back to work━you’re not quite at the finish line yet.

Editing is just as important as drafting, if not more-so. This is the stage where you refine your writing into the sharpest, smartest version of itself. This is where your writing is transformed from manic ramblings to a polished essay.

Different folks edit in different ways, but if you’re looking for efficiency, like us, consider this editing flow:

  • Edit for content
  • Fix those weird parts, take out redundancies, and make sure the order/structure flows
  • Edit for grammar, fluency, spelling, punctuation, word use (principle vs. principal), and formatting

  • Read your work aloud during the final proofread before submitting

That’s it. You’re done!

The MLA Handbook highlights principles over prescriptive practices. Essentially, a writer will need to take note of primary elements in every source, such as author, title, etc. and then assort them in a general format. Thus, by using this methodology, a writer will be able to cite any source regardless of whether it’s included in this list.

However, this guide will highlight a few concerns when citing digital sources in MLA style.

Best Practices for Managing Online Sources

Because online information can change or disappear, it is always a good idea to keep personal copies of important electronic information whenever possible. Downloading or even printing key documents ensures you have a stable backup. You can also use the Bookmark function in your web browser in order to build an easy-to-access reference for all of your project's sources (though this will not help you if the information is changed or deleted).

It is also wise to keep a record of when you first consult with each online source. MLA uses the phrase, “Accessed” to denote which date you accessed the web page when available or necessary. It is not required to do so, but it is encouraged (especially when there is no copyright date listed on a website).

Important Note on the Use of URLs in MLA

Include a URL or web address to help readers locate your sources. Because web addresses are not static (i.e., they change often) and because documents sometimes appear in multiple places on the web (e.g., on multiple databases), MLA encourages the use of citing containers such as Youtube, JSTOR, Spotify, or Netflix in order to easily access and verify sources. However, MLA only requires the www. address, so eliminate all https:// when citing URLs.

Many scholarly journal articles found in databases include a DOI (digital object identifier). If a DOI is available, cite the DOI number instead of the URL.

Online newspapers and magazines sometimes include a “permalink,” which is a shortened, stable version of a URL. Look for a “share” or “cite this” button to see if a source includes a permalink. If you can find a permalink, use that instead of a URL.

Abbreviations Commonly Used with Electronic Sources

If page numbers are not available, use par. or pars. to denote paragraph numbers. Use these in place of the p. or pp. abbreviation. Par. would be used for a single paragraph, while pars. would be used for a span of two or more paragraphs.

Basic Style for Citations of Electronic Sources (Including Online Databases)

Here are some common features you should try to find before citing electronic sources in MLA style. Not every web page will provide all of the following information. However, collect as much of the following information as possible:

  • Author and/or editor names (if available); last names first.
  • "Article name in quotation marks."
  • Title of the website, project, or book in italics.
  • Any version numbers available, including editions (ed.), revisions, posting dates, volumes (vol.), or issue numbers (no.).
  • Publisher information, including the publisher name and publishing date.
  • Take note of any page numbers (p. or pp.) or paragraph numbers (par. or pars.).
  • DOI (if available, precede it with "https://doi.org/"), otherwise a URL (without the https://) or permalink.
  • Date you accessed the material (Date Accessed). While not required, saving this information it is highly recommended, especially when dealing with pages that change frequently or do not have a visible copyright date.

Use the following format:

Author. "Title." Title of container (self contained if book) , Other contributors (translators or editors), Version (edition), Number (vol. and/or no.), Publisher, Publication Date, Location (pages, paragraphs and/or URL, DOI or permalink). 2 nd container’s title , Other contributors, Version, Number, Publisher, Publication date, Location, Date of Access (if applicable).

Citing an Entire Web Site

When citing an entire website, follow the same format as listed above, but include a compiler name if no single author is available.

Author, or compiler name (if available). Name of Site. Version number (if available), Name of institution/organization affiliated with the site (sponsor or publisher), date of resource creation (if available), DOI (preferred), otherwise include a URL or permalink. Date of access (if applicable).

Editor, author, or compiler name (if available). Name of Site . Version number, Name of institution/organization affiliated with the site (sponsor or publisher), date of resource creation (if available), URL, DOI or permalink. Date of access (if applicable).

Course or Department Websites

Give the instructor name. Then list the title of the course (or the school catalog designation for the course) in italics. Give appropriate department and school names as well, following the course title.

A Page on a Web Site

For an individual page on a Web site, list the author or alias if known, followed by an indication of the specific page or article being referenced. Usually, the title of the page or article appears in a header at the top of the page. Follow this with the information covered above for entire Web sites. If the publisher is the same as the website name, only list it once.

Citations for e-books closely resemble those for physical books. Simply indicate that the book in question is an e-book by putting the term "e-book" in the "version" slot of the MLA template (i.e., after the author, the title of the source, the title of the container, and the names of any other contributors).

If the e-book is formatted for a specific reader device or service, you can indicate this by treating this information the same way you would treat a physical book's edition number. Often, this will mean replacing "e-book" with "[App/Service] ed."

Note:  The MLA considers the term "e-book" to refer to publications formatted specifically for reading with an e-book reader device (e.g., a Kindle) or a corresponding web application. These e-books will not have URLs or DOIs. If you are citing book content from an ordinary webpage with a URL, use the "A Page on a Web Site" format above.

An Image (Including a Painting, Sculpture, or Photograph)

Provide the artist's name, the work of art italicized, the date of creation, the institution and city where the work is housed. Follow this initial entry with the name of the Website in italics, and the date of access.

Article in an Online-only Scholarly Journal

MLA requires a page range for articles that appear in Scholarly Journals. If the journal you are citing appears exclusively in an online format (i.e. there is no corresponding print publication) that does not make use of page numbers, indicate the URL or other location information.

Include the date and time of posting, using the reader's time zone; separate the date and time with a comma and end with a period. Include the date accessed if you deem necessary.

Video and audio sources need to be documented using the same basic guidelines for citing print sources in MLA style. Include as much descriptive information as necessary to help readers understand the type and nature of the source you are citing. If the author’s name is the same as the uploader, only cite the author once. If the author is different from the uploader, cite the author’s name before the title.

How to Cite a Website in MLA

If you are a student faced with creating an MLA website citation for the first time, you may be confused about where to begin. This guide is here to answer all of your questions and take the guesswork out of creating an MLA citation for websites.

All academic fields require students and researchers to document their sources. Those studying the humanities, including fields in language literature, will typically follow MLA format when structuring their papers as well as when documenting sources.

Citing your sources is a necessary part of any research paper or project. This element serves both to give credit to the researchers and authors whose work informed yours, as well as to preserve academic integrity. Any source that provided you with ideas or information that you have included in your work and which are not considered common knowledge must be included, including websites.

The Modern Language Association is not associated with this guide. All of the information, however, is based on the MLA Handbook, Ninth Edition as well as the MLA website, and is presented as guidance for students writing in this style.

What You Need

To cite a website, you should have the following information:

  • Title of source.
  • Title of the container ,
  • Other contributors (names and roles),
  • Publication date,
  • Location of the source (such as DOI, URL, or page range).

The Modern Language Association refers to these guidelines as “core elements” on page 105 of the Handbook. If your teacher has asked you to cite your sources in this format, these elements will form the foundation for each MLA website citation included in your MLA Works Cited list, as well as the entries for sources in any other format.

If one of the elements does not apply, students may omit it. Supplemental items may also be included when necessary. In addition to the supplemental details discussed below, a list of additional supplemental components can be found on the MLA website.

Changes to MLA Citation for Websites in Ninth Edition

In previous editions, students and researchers creating an MLA website citation were not required to include the URL. However, beginning with MLA 8, it is recommended that you include the URL when creating a citation for a website unless your teacher instructs you otherwise. Even though web pages and URLs can be taken down or changed, it is still possible to learn about the source from the information seen in the URL.

When including URLs in a citation, http:// and https:// should be omitted from the website’s address ( Handbook 195). Additionally, If you are creating a citation that will be read on a digital device, it is helpful to make the URL clickable so that readers can directly access the source themselves.

If the website’s publisher includes a permalink or DOI (Digital Object Identifier), these are preferable as they are not changeable in the same manner as URLs. Whether you include a URL, permalink, or DOI, this information should be included in the location portion of your citation.

Another change that occurred with the eighth edition that impacts how to cite a website in MLA is the removal of the date the website was accessed. While you may still find it useful to include this information or your teacher may request it, it is no longer a mandatory piece of your citation. Should you choose to add this optional information, you may list it after the URL in the following manner:

  • Accessed Day Month Year.
  • Accessed 2 May 1998.
  • Accessed 31 Apr. 2001.
  • Accessed 17 Sept. 2010.

MLA 9: Citing Websites With an Author

To make an MLA 9 citation for a website, you will need the following pieces of information:

  • author’s name
  • title of the article or page
  • title of the website
  • name of the publisher (Note: Only include the name of the publisher when it differs from the name of the website.)
  • date the page or site was published (if available)

Citing a Website in MLA

Place the author’s name in reverse order, the last name first, followed by a comma, and then the first name followed by a period. The title of the web page or article is placed in quotation marks, with a period before the end quotation. The title of the website is written in italics followed by a comma. If the name of the publisher differs from the name of the website, include it after the title. Immediately following the publisher is the date that the page or article was published or posted. Finally, end with the URL, permalink, or DOI, followed by a period.

The in-text citation for a website with an author is reflected as the author’s last name in parentheses, followed by a period. Unless the website includes numbered paragraphs or sections, you should not include any additional information. How to cite a website with two authors in MLA 9

According to Section 5.7 of the Handbook , for a website with two authors, place the authors’ names in the same order as the source (similar to an APA citation ). The first name should be formatted in reverse order as was done for a single author. The second name, however, is written as First Name Last Name and is followed by a period, as demonstrated in the template that follows:

How to cite a website with three or more authors in MLA 9

For a source with three or more authors, you should place the authors’ names in the same order as the source. The first name is listed in reverse order and is followed by a comma and et al. Et al is the abbreviation for et alia, a gender-neutral Latin phrase meaning “and others.”

Note about web pages by organizations/corporations:  Often, web pages are published by organizations or corporations with no author indicated. In these cases, you can assume that the publisher also authored the web page (like the example above). Since the author and publisher are the same in these cases, you can skip showing an author and just indicate the organization /corporation as the publisher ( Handbook 119 ).

The in-text citation for a website without an author is noted with the first noun phrase or words in the title in quotations and parenthesis, followed by a period. Unless the website includes numbered paragraphs or sections, you should not include any additional information. To cite an Instagram post, begin with the account holder’s name and their username in square brackets. In quotations, list the title of the photo, if it is given. Any other contributors (such as the photographer, if it is not the same as the account holder) are then listed, after which you will add the date the photo was published and the URL.

This is then followed by the title of the website in italics, and the publisher, if applicable. The date is then listed, followed by the URL, permalink, or DOI.

The in-text citation should identify the author and talk about the format (e.g., video, post, image, etc.) in prose.

The basic structure of a works-cited reference for social media stays the same no matter the format or the social media service (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.). Here are works- cited-list entry guidelines:

  • The name is listed in last name, first name format with a period following. If an organization, just write the organization’s name as it’s usually presented.
  • If the username is very different from the author’s real name, include it in brackets after the user’s real name but before the period.
  • Write the title, post text, or description of the post in quotation marks. End it with a period.
  • Write the website name in italics with a comma afterward.
  • List the day, month, and year that the post was created followed by a comma.
  • List the URL followed by a period. Leave out “https://” and “http://”.

By uncritically embracing climate catastrophism, Pope Francis, perhaps unwittingly and most certainly unwillingly, rejects the God he clearly tries to serve wholeheartedly. That is the main conclusion of the essay Pope Francis’ Climate Crusade or the erosion of faith in God , a tale of two encyclicals , written by Jaap C. Hanekamp and William M. Briggs and published by Clintel.

Pope Francis outlined his views on climate change in two encyclicals, Laudato Si’ (2015) and Laudate Deum (2023). Concisely, the Pope fears that the world in which we live is collapsing and may be nearing the breaking point because of climate change. In fact, the Pope announced in his encyclicals that there is a “global climate crisis.”

In the essay Pope Francis’ Climate Crusade or the erosion of faith in God chemist and theologian Jaap C. Hanekamp and statistician and meteorologist William M. Briggs reflect on both encyclicals, though they do not assess the scientific information on climate change as such. Instead, they examine the Pope’s use and understanding of models, and delve deeper into the overarching philosophy that sustains both encyclicals. They conclude that the Pope, carelessly in their view, embraces scientism , and not science , which inadvertently weakens his position, and those that follow his scientistic prescriptions.

Scientism is the ideology that science alone is deemed capable of elucidating and resolving all genuine human problems, and that all human affairs can be reduced to science. Accordingly, scientism is the effort to expand science to all other fields of human affairs, even theology, and to usurp them in a reductionist fashion.

Hanekamp and Briggs conclude that the climate scientism Pope Francis peddles stands diametrically opposed to the Christian worldview. “Scientism of any stripe is incommensurable with not only the Christian faith but also with science.”

About the authors Jaap C. Hanekamp is a chemist by trade and received his first PhD in 1992. Citations are required in all types of academic texts. They are needed for several reasons:

  • To avoid plagiarism by indicating when you’re taking information from another source
  • To give proper credit to the author of that source
  • To allow the reader to consult your sources for themselves

A citation is needed whenever you integrate a source into your writing. This usually means quoting or paraphrasing:

  • To quote a source , copy a short piece of text word for word and put it inside quotation marks .
  • To paraphrase a source , put the text into your own words. It’s important that the paraphrase is not too close to the original wording. You can use the paraphrasing tool if you don’t want to do this manually.

Citations are needed whether you quote or paraphrase, and whatever type of source you use. As well as citing scholarly sources like books and journal articles, don’t forget to include citations for any other sources you use for ideas, examples, or evidence. In some cases, you may have to choose a citation style for yourself. Make sure to pick one style and use it consistently:

  • APA Style is widely used in the social sciences and beyond.
  • MLA style is common in the humanities.
  • Chicago notes and bibliography , common in the humanities
  • Chicago author-date , used in the (social) sciences
  • There are many other citation styles for different disciplines.

In most styles, your citations consist of:

  • Brief in-text citations at the relevant points in the text
  • A reference list or bibliography containing full information on all the sources you’ve cited

In-text citations most commonly take the form of parenthetical citations featuring the last name of the source’s author and its year of publication (aka author-date citations).

An alternative to this type of in-text citation is the system used in numerical citation styles , where a number is inserted into the text, corresponding to an entry in a numbered reference list.

There are also note citation styles , where you place your citations in either footnotes or endnotes . Since they’re not embedded in the text itself, these citations can provide more detail and sometimes aren’t accompanied by a full reference list or bibliography.

A reference list (aka “Bibliography” or “Works Cited,” depending on the style) is where you provide full information on each of the sources you’ve cited in the text. It appears at the end of your paper, usually with a hanging indent applied to each entry.

The information included in reference entries is broadly similar, whatever citation style you’re using. For each source, you’ll typically include the:

  • Author name
  • Publication date
  • Container (e.g., the book an essay was published in, the journal an article appeared in)
  • Location (e.g., a URL or DOI , or sometimes a physical location)

The exact information included varies depending on the source type and the citation style. The order in which the information appears, and how you format it (e.g., capitalization, use of italics) also varies.

Most commonly, the entries in your reference list are alphabetized by author name. This allows the reader to easily find the relevant entry based on the author name in your in-text citation.
