What is Case Study Methodology ?

Case studies in research are both unique and uniquely confusing. The term case study is confusing because the same term is used multiple ways. The term can refer to the methodology, that is, a system of frameworks used to design a study, or the methods used to conduct it. Or, case study can refer to a type of academic writing that typically delves into a problem, process, or situation.

Case study methodology can entail the study of one or more "cases," that could be described as instances, examples, or settings where the problem or phenomenon can be examined. The researcher is tasked with defining the parameters of the case, that is, what is included and excluded. This process is called bounding the case , or setting boundaries.

Case study can be combined with other methodologies, such as ethnography, grounded theory, or phenomenology. In such studies the research on the case uses another framework to further define the study and refine the approach.

Case study is also described as a method, given particular approaches used to collect and analyze data. Case study research is conducted by almost every social science discipline: business, education, sociology, psychology. Case study research, with its reliance on multiple sources, is also a natural choice for researchers interested in trans-, inter-, or cross-disciplinary studies.

The Encyclopedia of case study research provides an overview:

The purpose of case study research is twofold: (1) to provide descriptive information and (2) to suggest theoretical relevance. Rich description enables an in-depth or sharpened understanding of the case.

First-year undergraduates’ expectations and experience of university and student engagement variables were investigated to determine how these perceptions influence their student identity and overall course satisfaction. Data collected from 554 first-year undergraduates at a large private university were analyzed. Participants were given the adapted version of the Melbourne Centre for the Study of Higher Education Survey to self-report their learning experience and engagement in the university community. The results showed that, in general, the students’ reasons of pursuing tertiary education were to open the door to career opportunities and skill development. Moreover, students’ views on their learning and university engagement were at the moderate level. In relation to student identity and overall student satisfaction, it is encouraging to state that their perceptions of studentship and course satisfaction were rather positive. After controlling for demographics, student engagement appeared to explain more variance in student identity, whereas students’ expectations and experience explained greater variance in students’ overall course satisfaction. Implications for practice, limitations, and recommendation of this study are addressed.

The global  Mastering of a Music City  report in 2015 notes that the concept of music cities has penetrated the global political vernacular because it delivers “significant economic, employment, cultural and social benefits.” This article highlights that no empirical study has combined all these values and offers a relevant and comprehensive definition of a music city. Drawing on industry research,1 the article assesses how mathematical flowcharts, such as Algorithm A (Economics), Algorithm B (Four T’s creative index), and Algorithm C (Heritage), have contributed to the definition of a music city. Taking Melbourne as a case study, it illustrates how Algorithms A and B are used as disputed evidence about whether the city is touted as Australia’s music capital. The article connects the three algorithms to an academic framework from musicology, urban studies, cultural economics, and sociology, and proposes a benchmark Algorithm D (Music Cities definition), which offers a more holistic assessment of music activity in any urban context. The article concludes by arguing that Algorithm D offers a much-needed definition of what comprises a music city because it builds on the popular political economy focus and includes the social importance of space and cultural practices.

Abstract. Populism seems to define our current political age. The term is splashed across the headlines, brandished in political speeches and commentaries, and applied extensively in numerous academic publications and conferences. This pervasive usage, or populist hype, has serious implications for our understanding of the meaning of populism itself and for our interpretation of the phenomena to which it is applied. In particular, we argue that its common conflation with far-right politics, as well as its breadth of application to other phenomena, has contributed to the mainstreaming of the far right in three main ways: (1) agenda-setting power and deflection, (2) euphemisation and trivialisation, and (3) amplification. Through a mixed-methods approach to discourse analysis, this article uses  The Guardian  newspaper as a case study to explore the development of the populist hype and the detrimental effects of the logics that it has pushed in public discourse.

Abstract. Sociological practitioners often face considerable methodological uncertainty when undertaking a quantitative analysis. This methodological uncertainty encompasses both data construction (e.g. defining variables) and analysis (e.g. selecting and specifying a modelling procedure). Methodological uncertainty can lead to results that are fragile and arbitrary. Yet, many practitioners may be unaware of the potential scale of methodological uncertainty in quantitative analysis, and the recent emergence of techniques for addressing it. Recent proposals for ‘multi-strategy’ approaches seek to identify and manage methodological uncertainty in quantitative analysis. We present a case-study of a multi-strategy analysis, applied to the problem of estimating the long-term impact of 1980s UK government-sponsored youth training. We use this case study to further highlight the problem of cumulative methodological fragilities in applied quantitative sociology and to discuss and help develop multi-strategy analysis as a tool to address them.

However, these are problematic for critical IR research, pointing to the need for a non-positivist case study methodology. To address this issue, this article introduces and adapts the extended case methodology as a critical, reflexivist approach to case study research, whereby the case is constructed through a dynamic interaction with theory, rather than selected, and knowledge is produced through extensions rather than generalisation. Insofar as it seeks to study the world in complex and non-linear terms, take context and positionality seriously, and generate explicitly political and emancipatory knowledge, the extended case methodology is consistent with the ontological and epistemological commitments of several critical IR approaches. Its potential is illustrated in the final part of the article with reference to researching the socioeconomic dimension of transitional justice in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Abstract. Many libraries in the Global South do not collect comprehensive data about themselves, which creates challenges in terms of local and international visibility. Crowdsourcing is an effective tool that engages the public to collect missing data, and it has proven to be particularly valuable in countries where governments collect little public data. Whereas crowdsourcing is often used within fields that have high levels of development funding, such as health, the authors believe that this approach would have many benefits for the library field as well. They present qualitative and quantitative evidence from 23 African countries involved in a crowdsourcing project to map libraries. The authors find benefits in terms of increased connections between stakeholders, capacity-building, and increased local visibility. These findings demonstrate the potential of crowdsourced approaches for tasks such as mapping to benefit libraries and similarly positioned institutions in the Global South in multifaceted ways.

A case study is a detailed study of a specific subject, such as a person, group, place, event, organization, or phenomenon. Case studies are commonly used in social, educational, clinical, and business research.

A case study research design usually involves qualitative methods , but quantitative methods are sometimes also used. Case studies are good for describing , comparing, evaluating and understanding different aspects of a research problem .

A case study is an appropriate research design when you want to gain concrete, contextual, in-depth knowledge about a specific real-world subject. It allows you to explore the key characteristics, meanings, and implications of the case.

Case studies are often a good choice in a thesis or dissertation . They keep your project focused and manageable when you don’t have the time or resources to do large-scale research.

You might use just one complex case study where you explore a single subject in depth, or conduct multiple case studies to compare and illuminate different aspects of your research problem.

• Provide new or unexpected insights into the subject

Unlike quantitative or experimental research , a strong case study does not require a random or representative sample. In fact, case studies often deliberately focus on unusual, neglected, or outlying cases which may shed new light on the research problem.

Example of an outlying case studyIn the 1960s the town of Roseto, Pennsylvania was discovered to have extremely low rates of heart disease compared to the US average. It became an important case study for understanding previously neglected causes of heart disease.

However, you can also choose a more common or representative case to exemplify a particular category, experience or phenomenon.

Example of a representative case studyIn the 1920s, two sociologists used Muncie, Indiana as a case study of a typical American city that supposedly exemplified the changing culture of the US at the time.

While case studies focus more on concrete details than general theories, they should usually have some connection with theory in the field. This way the case study is not just an isolated description, but is integrated into existing knowledge about the topic. It might aim to:

• Exemplify a theory by showing how it explains the case under investigation
• Expand on a theory by uncovering new concepts and ideas that need to be incorporated
• Challenge a theory by exploring an outlier case that doesn’t fit with established assumptions

To ensure that your analysis of the case has a solid academic grounding, you should conduct a literature review of sources related to the topic and develop a theoretical framework . This means identifying key concepts and theories to guide your analysis and interpretation.

There are many different research methods you can use to collect data on your subject. Case studies tend to focus on qualitative data using methods such as interviews , observations , and analysis of primary and secondary sources (e.g., newspaper articles, photographs, official records). Sometimes a case study will also collect quantitative data.

Example of a mixed methods case studyFor a case study of a wind farm development in a rural area, you could collect quantitative data on employment rates and business revenue, collect qualitative data on local people’s perceptions and experiences, and analyze local and national media coverage of the development.

The aim is to gain as thorough an understanding as possible of the case and its context.

In writing up the case study, you need to bring together all the relevant aspects to give as complete a picture as possible of the subject.

How you report your findings depends on the type of research you are doing. Some case studies are structured like a standard scientific paper or thesis , with separate sections or chapters for the methods , results and discussion .

Others are written in a more narrative style, aiming to explore the case from various angles and analyze its meanings and implications (for example, by using textual analysis or discourse analysis ).

In all cases, though, make sure to give contextual details about the case, connect it back to the literature and theory, and discuss how it fits into wider patterns or debates.

What Types of Case Studies Are Out There?

Where do you find data for a case study, how do i write a psychology case study.

A case study is an in-depth study of one person, group, or event. In a case study, nearly every aspect of the subject's life and history is analyzed to seek patterns and causes of behavior. Case studies can be used in many different fields, including psychology, medicine, education, anthropology, political science, and social work.

The point of a case study is to learn as much as possible about an individual or group so that the information can be generalized to many others. Unfortunately, case studies tend to be highly subjective, and it is sometimes difficult to generalize results to a larger population.

While case studies focus on a single individual or group, they follow a format similar to other types of psychology writing. If you are writing a case study, we got you—here are some rules of APA format to reference.  

At a Glance

A case study, or an in-depth study of a person, group, or event, can be a useful research tool when used wisely. In many cases, case studies are best used in situations where it would be difficult or impossible for you to conduct an experiment. They are helpful for looking at unique situations and allow researchers to gather a lot of˜ information about a specific individual or group of people. However, it's important to be cautious of any bias we draw from them as they are highly subjective.

What Are the Benefits and Limitations of Case Studies?

A case study can have its strengths and weaknesses. Researchers must consider these pros and cons before deciding if this type of study is appropriate for their needs.

One of the greatest advantages of a case study is that it allows researchers to investigate things that are often difficult or impossible to replicate in a lab. Some other benefits of a case study:

• Allows researchers to capture information on the 'how,' 'what,' and 'why,' of something that's implemented
• Gives researchers the chance to collect information on why one strategy might be chosen over another
• Permits researchers to develop hypotheses that can be explored in experimental research

On the other hand, a case study can have some drawbacks:

• It cannot necessarily be generalized to the larger population
• Cannot demonstrate cause and effect
• It may not be scientifically rigorous
• It can lead to bias

Researchers may choose to perform a case study if they want to explore a unique or recently discovered phenomenon. Through their insights, researchers develop additional ideas and study questions that might be explored in future studies.

It's important to remember that the insights from case studies cannot be used to determine cause-and-effect relationships between variables. However, case studies may be used to develop hypotheses that can then be addressed in experimental research.

Case Study Examples

There have been a number of notable case studies in the history of psychology. Much of  Freud's work and theories were developed through individual case studies. Some great examples of case studies in psychology include:

• Anna O : Anna O. was a pseudonym of a woman named Bertha Pappenheim, a patient of a physician named Josef Breuer. While she was never a patient of Freud's, Freud and Breuer discussed her case extensively. The woman was experiencing symptoms of a condition that was then known as hysteria and found that talking about her problems helped relieve her symptoms. Her case played an important part in the development of talk therapy as an approach to mental health treatment.
• Phineas Gage : Phineas Gage was a railroad employee who experienced a terrible accident in which an explosion sent a metal rod through his skull, damaging important portions of his brain. Gage recovered from his accident but was left with serious changes in both personality and behavior.
• Genie : Genie was a young girl subjected to horrific abuse and isolation. The case study of Genie allowed researchers to study whether language learning was possible, even after missing critical periods for language development. Her case also served as an example of how scientific research may interfere with treatment and lead to further abuse of vulnerable individuals.

Such cases demonstrate how case research can be used to study things that researchers could not replicate in experimental settings. In Genie's case, her horrific abuse denied her the opportunity to learn a language at critical points in her development.

This is clearly not something researchers could ethically replicate, but conducting a case study on Genie allowed researchers to study phenomena that are otherwise impossible to reproduce.

There are a few different types of case studies that psychologists and other researchers might use:

• Collective case studies : These involve studying a group of individuals. Researchers might study a group of people in a certain setting or look at an entire community. For example, psychologists might explore how access to resources in a community has affected the collective mental well-being of those who live there.
• Descriptive case studies : These involve starting with a descriptive theory. The subjects are then observed, and the information gathered is compared to the pre-existing theory.
• Explanatory case studies : These   are often used to do causal investigations. In other words, researchers are interested in looking at factors that may have caused certain things to occur.
• Exploratory case studies : These are sometimes used as a prelude to further, more in-depth research. This allows researchers to gather more information before developing their research questions and hypotheses .
• Instrumental case studies : These occur when the individual or group allows researchers to understand more than what is initially obvious to observers.
• Intrinsic case studies : This type of case study is when the researcher has a personal interest in the case. Jean Piaget's observations of his own children are good examples of how an intrinsic case study can contribute to the development of a psychological theory.

The three main case study types often used are intrinsic, instrumental, and collective. Intrinsic case studies are useful for learning about unique cases. Instrumental case studies help look at an individual to learn more about a broader issue. A collective case study can be useful for looking at several cases simultaneously.

The type of case study that psychology researchers use depends on the unique characteristics of the situation and the case itself.

There are a number of different sources and methods that researchers can use to gather information about an individual or group. Six major sources that have been identified by researchers are:

• Archival records : Census records, survey records, and name lists are examples of archival records.
• Direct observation : This strategy involves observing the subject, often in a natural setting . While an individual observer is sometimes used, it is more common to utilize a group of observers.
• Documents : Letters, newspaper articles, administrative records, etc., are the types of documents often used as sources.
• Interviews : Interviews are one of the most important methods for gathering information in case studies. An interview can involve structured survey questions or more open-ended questions.
• Participant observation : When the researcher serves as a participant in events and observes the actions and outcomes, it is called participant observation.
• Physical artifacts : Tools, objects, instruments, and other artifacts are often observed during a direct observation of the subject.

If you have been directed to write a case study for a psychology course, be sure to check with your instructor for any specific guidelines you need to follow. If you are writing your case study for a professional publication, check with the publisher for their specific guidelines for submitting a case study.

Here is a general outline of what should be included in a case study.

Section 1: A Case History

This section will have the following structure and content:

Background information : The first section of your paper will present your client's background. Include factors such as age, gender, work, health status, family mental health history, family and social relationships, drug and alcohol history, life difficulties, goals, and coping skills and weaknesses.

Description of the presenting problem : In the next section of your case study, you will describe the problem or symptoms that the client presented with.

Describe any physical, emotional, or sensory symptoms reported by the client. Thoughts, feelings, and perceptions related to the symptoms should also be noted. Any screening or diagnostic assessments that are used should also be described in detail and all scores reported.

Your diagnosis : Provide your diagnosis and give the appropriate Diagnostic and Statistical Manual code. Explain how you reached your diagnosis, how the client's symptoms fit the diagnostic criteria for the disorder(s), or any possible difficulties in reaching a diagnosis.

Section 2: Treatment Plan

This portion of the paper will address the chosen treatment for the condition. This might also include the theoretical basis for the chosen treatment or any other evidence that might exist to support why this approach was chosen.

• Cognitive behavioral approach : Explain how a cognitive behavioral therapist would approach treatment. Offer background information on cognitive behavioral therapy and describe the treatment sessions, client response, and outcome of this type of treatment. Make note of any difficulties or successes encountered by your client during treatment.
• Humanistic approach : Describe a humanistic approach that could be used to treat your client, such as client-centered therapy . Provide information on the type of treatment you chose, the client's reaction to the treatment, and the end result of this approach. Explain why the treatment was successful or unsuccessful.
• Psychoanalytic approach : Describe how a psychoanalytic therapist would view the client's problem. Provide some background on the psychoanalytic approach and cite relevant references. Explain how psychoanalytic therapy would be used to treat the client, how the client would respond to therapy, and the effectiveness of this treatment approach.
• Pharmacological approach : If treatment primarily involves the use of medications, explain which medications were used and why. Provide background on the effectiveness of these medications and how monotherapy may compare with an approach that combines medications with therapy or other treatments.

This section of a case study should also include information about the treatment goals, process, and outcomes.

When you are writing a case study, you should also include a section where you discuss the case study itself, including the strengths and limitiations of the study. You should note how the findings of your case study might support previous research. 

In your discussion section, you should also describe some of the implications of your case study. What ideas or findings might require further exploration? How might researchers go about exploring some of these questions in additional studies?

• Never refer to the subject of your case study as "the client." Instead, use their name or a pseudonym.
• Read examples of case studies to gain an idea about the style and format.

What Is the Harvard Business School Case Study Method?

The case study method , or case method , is a learning technique in which you’re presented with a real-world business challenge and asked how you’d solve it. After working through it yourself and with peers, you’re told how the scenario played out.

HBS pioneered the case method in 1922. Shortly before, in 1921, the first case was written.

“How do you go into an ambiguous situation and get to the bottom of it?” says HBS Professor Jan Rivkin, former senior associate dean and chair of HBS's master of business administration (MBA) program, in a video about the case method . “That skill—the skill of figuring out a course of inquiry to choose a course of action—that skill is as relevant today as it was in 1921.”

Originally developed for the in-person MBA classroom, HBS Online adapted the case method into an engaging, interactive online learning experience in 2014.

In HBS Online courses , you learn about each case from the business professional who experienced it. After reviewing their videos, you’re prompted to take their perspective and explain how you’d handle their situation.

You then get to read peers’ responses, “star” them, and comment to further the discussion. Afterward, you learn how the professional handled it and their key takeaways.

HBS Online’s adaptation of the case method incorporates the famed HBS “cold call,” in which you’re called on at random to make a decision without time to prepare.

“Learning came to life!” said Sheneka Balogun , chief administration officer and chief of staff at LeMoyne-Owen College, of her experience taking the Credential of Readiness (CORe) program . “The videos from the professors, the interactive cold calls where you were randomly selected to participate, and the case studies that enhanced and often captured the essence of objectives and learning goals were all embedded in each module. This made learning fun, engaging, and student-friendly.”

Breaking Down the Candidate’s Performance

This Bain case study sample features a large direct-to-consumer conglomerate that sells lamps and other small home furniture pieces in the United States. The company is looking to expand into the Mexican market, particularly with their lamp segment. The candidate’s job is to size the market for lamps sold each year in Mexico.

The candidate asks a few clarifying question before and after building out a structure for the case. It’s always smart to ask questions to clarify assumptions. The basic structure the candidate created looks like this: Population > Households X Lamps / Household > Spend / Lamp. One thing he missed was converting his market size into a per-year (or annualized) figure. In most cases, the per-year basis is standard. If you are unsure, ask a clarifying question!

Overall, it was a good performance, with a final score of 3/4.

McKinsey: Market Study Case Study Sample (Interviewer-Led)

The client in this case is a beverage producer in the U.S. that wants help in designing a product launch strategy. The candidate’s job is to analyze the factors surrounding the product launch and the company’s internal capabilities to support the launch.

The candidate brought strong level 2 insights that McKinsey is looking for in its future consultants. Also, take note of how the interview was structured, with the interviewer taking the lead in presenting the information and driving the case. This interviewer-led style is typical in McKinsey case interviews. In the conclusion, the candidate led with the recommendation first (“here is what I recommend you do”), and followed that up with supporting data. McKinsey loves this answer-first (or hypothesis-driven) style of communication, derived from the Pyramid Principle . The candidate gets a score of 4/4 in this case study sample.

BCG: Profitability Framework Case Study Sample

• CANDIDATE PERFORMANCE : 2/4

In this BCG case study sample, the client is a B2B and B2C housewares and home furnishings retailer. In order to combat a recent slowdown in growth, the company implemented aggressive price promotions. However, profitability has continued to decline. The candidate’s job is to analyze the promotional campaign and determine what can be done to increase its effectiveness.

The candidate in this case study sample had what we call the “game factor.” He was eager and excited to tackle any challenge, and that positive attitude is what interviewers are looking for, especially in the second round of case interviews. He also showed that he wasn’t afraid of the math portion of the case. What was missing from his performance was insights. Ultimately, consultants are hired because of the insights they provide – not to crunch numbers, or use frameworks, but to provide recommendations built on insights. Because of that, this performance gets a score of 2/4.

Deloitte: Market Study Case Study Sample

• CASE NAME : Chainsaw Pants
• FIRM STYLE : Deloitte

The client in this Deloitte case study is a uniform producer in Australia. The company is looking to expand with a new product. The candidate’s job is to look at the market for the product to determine if it is a good opportunity for growth.

The candidate nailed the likeability factor that is always important in Deloitte interviews. Where she fell short was in communication, both in verbalizing her structure, numbering the buckets in the structure, and doing the math out-loud. We can’t emphasize this enough: you must over-communicate in any virtual interview setting – there is no such thing as communicating too much!

Bain: Market Study – Market Growth – Case Study Sample (with Diagrams)

• CASE NAME : Candy Company

The client in the Bain case study sample is a candy company that is looking to double revenues – while maintaining margins – in 4 years. The candidate’s role is to help the company create a short-term strategy to accomplish the goals of the CEO.

The candidate – who already landed an offer at Bain – absolutely crushed this case. Take note! From his opening statement (“this looks like a sweet case!”) to his final recommendation (42:25), he conveyed a sense of confidence in himself. This is crucial in case interviews. The case provides an example of how to interpret math diagrams – skip to 20:47 for that. We’re giving this one an overall rating of 4/4.

BCG: Profitability Case Study Sample (with ex-Bridgespan Consultant)

• CASE NAME : Needle Needer

In this case study, the candidate’s job is to help a medical device manufacturer maintain profits despite new regulations causing a negative shift in demand.

The candidate does well in opening the case and asking clarifying questions to simplify the problem. Where he fell flat was in the structure – both in the communication of the framework, and in the actual strength of the structure that he created. Especially for BCG cases, the firm is looking for your structure to be robust because you’re going to have to follow it more, so make sure to allow yourself enough time to build a strong structure. We’re giving this case study sample a score of 3/4.

McKinsey: Mergers and Acquisitions Case Study Sample

• CASE NAME : Margaritaville
• CASE TYPE : Mergers & Acquisitions

In this back-of-the-envelope Mergers & Acquisitions case study sample, the business situation in the case involves a restaurant chain (Margaritaville). The candidate is being asked to analyze the chain as a potential investment to a PE firm. Is the restaurant chain worth acquiring?

The case is a good reminder to stay on track when it comes to timing. The ideal time in a case interview is 2 minutes to create a structure, and 2 minutes to present it. The candidate took 5.5 minutes to present! Not only did this eat into her time, it also make it hard to get into a comfortable rhythm as she continued into the rest of the case. The biggest weakness for our candidate was the creative question. Jenny Rae (the interviewer) recommended that she make that the focal point in her practice for future cases. There’s a lot of really good learnings in the feedback, so make sure you watch this one to the end. The candidate gets an overall score of 2/4.

BCG: Market Study – Market Entry – Case Study Sample

• CASE NAME : Pakistani Car Market

The client in this case study sample is a German luxury car maker that is looking to enter the Pakistani market. There is 1 luxury car competitor in the country. The client wants to break even in 2 years if it enters the market. The candidate’s job is to gather the data needed to inform her go/no-go recommendation to the client.

Right off the bat, the candidate did not gain the confidence of the interviewer when she commented, “I’m not a car person.” In case study interviews, that’s a no-no. Even if you don’t know anything about the subject matter in the case, refrain from negative statements like that. Firms are asking, “can I see this person interacting with a Fortune 500 CEO on a consulting engagement?” In addition, the candidate used the issue tree in her structure, which created confusion en masse. Issue trees are effective in an in-person interview, but in a virtual environment, irrelevant at best, and confusing at worst. In virtual interviews , the interviewer relies heavily on you over-communicating your structure, and that includes numbering. Every bucket/category in your structure needs a number that is clearly communicated. Overall, this case gets a score of 3/4.

McKinsey: Market Sizing Case Study Sample

• CASE NAME : Disposable Diapers

In this McKinsey Market Sizing case study sample, the candidate is being asked to size the market for disposable diapers in China.

Overall, this was a fantastic performance by the candidate. Given that she is ex-McKinsey, that shouldn’t be too surprising! She did a great job giving the interviewer confidence that she’d be able to crush the case. Her structure was clear and linear. One ‘good to great’ pointer: she could have simplified her math by rounding at several different points. Overall, this gets a 4/4.

McKinsey: Revenue Growth Case Study Sample

• CASE NAME : Mango Maker

The client in this case is an agricultural chemicals producer in North America that is looking to grow revenues through the introduction of a new product in Mexico.

The candidate’s performance was good enough to pass a first round at McKinsey, but there were different areas with room for growth to go from a “B” performance to an “A.”

Case Interview Frameworks: Explained

Market sizing framework.

Market sizing case studies allow a business to know if a particular market would be appropriate to expand into. The capital expenditure required to expand into a new market is high, and exposes the company to a lot of risk. Therefore, extensive work by consultants to determine those risks and opportunities is an important step for companies to take. From a firm perspective, they want to know if you understand how to build a framework for this type of business problem, and appropriately defend your assumptions used to build your market sizing framework. If you’re able to do that, then you stand a good chance to do well in your case interview.

Market Study Framework

The Market Study framework is the most versatile of the basic frameworks. There are three types of Market Study framework questions.

• Market share (“How can the client grow market share?”).
• Market growth (“How can the client increase revenues?”).
• Market entry (“Will it be profitable for the client to enter the market?”). The framework looks at the external factors first – market, competitors, and customers. After looking at the external, it works its way to the internal factors – the company and the product/service.

It’s important to focus on the financial impact when using the Market Study framework!

Profitability Framework

The Profitability Framework is the most important of the basic frameworks. Why? Without profits, businesses can’t survive for long. There are 4 business situations in case study samples where the Profitability framework should be utilized.

• Growth Strategy : the client wants to grow significantly in a short period of time, meaning revenues, market share, profits, or a combination of the 3. How can you factor in any increased costs to grow both revenue and profits?
• Declining Profits : in this scenario, the client wants to not only stop the profit decline, but reverse it and get the business going in the right direction. Your job is to get to the root of the decline, and create a plan to reverse it.
• Creative Cost Benefit : in this business situation, the goal is often increased revenues or decreased costs. These types of case studies are often used for non-profits, because a non-profit’s success is not determined by profitability.
• Weighing Scenarios : the client is deciding between several options and needs your analytical skills and insight to guide them to a decision.

When using the Profitability Framework, it will serve you well to keep the ultimate goal in mind: profitability!

M&A Framework

The M&A Framework is the most complex of the frameworks, and also the most uncommon. It generally includes elements of the other basic frameworks, including Market Sizing, Profitability, and Market Study, with a fair amount of case math thrown in. The M&A Framework involves either a scenario where Company A wants to merge with Company B, or Company Y wants to acquire Company Z. There are 2 types of M&A buyers:

A case study is a process of researching into a project and documenting through writings, sketches , diagrams, and photos. To understand the various aspects of designing and constructing a building one must consider learning from other people’s mistakes. As Albert Einstein quoted, “Learn from yesterday, live for today, and hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop questioning.” 

A case study can be a starting point of any project or it can also serve as a link or reference which can help in explaining the project with ease. It is not necessary that the building we choose for our case study should be the true representation of our project. The main purpose is to research and understand the concepts that an architect has used while designing that project and how it worked, and our aim should be to learn from its perfections as well as from its mistakes too while adding our creativity.

• Primarily, talk to people and never stop questioning, read books, and dedicate your time to researching famous projects . Try to gather information on all famous projects because it is essential for a successful case study and easily available too. Also before starting the case study do a complete literature study on a particular subject, it gives a vague idea about the requirements of the project.
• Study different case studies that other people have done earlier on the projects which you would choose for your own just to get a vague idea about the project, before actually diving into it.
• Do case studies of similar projects with different requirements. For example, while doing a case study of a residential building, you should choose 3 residential buildings, one with the minimum, average, and maximum amenities. It helps in comparing between different design approaches.
• If possible, visit the building and do a live case study, a lot of information can be gathered by looking at the building first hand and you will get a much deeper insight and meaningful understanding of the subject and will also be able to feel the emotion which the building radiates.
• While doing the case study if you come across certain requirements that are missing but went through it while doing the literature study, they should try to implement those requirements in the design.

Certain points should be kept in mind while preparing the questionnaire, they are as follows,

Style of architecture

• The regional context is prevalent in the design or not.
• Special features.

Linkage / Connectivity diagrams

• From all the plans gather the linkage diagram.

Site plan analysis

• Size of the site.
• Site and building ratio.
• The orientation of the building.
• Geology, soil typology, vegetation, hydrography

Construction technologies and materials

• Related to the project.
• Materials easily available in that region and mostly used.
• Technologies used in that region. Search for local technologies that are known among the local laborers.

Environment and micro-climate

• Try to document a building situated in a region that is somewhat similar to the region in which the project will be designed.
• Important climatic factors- sun path, rainfall, and wind direction.

Requirements and used behaviors

• Areas required that will suffice the efficiency of the work to be done in that space.
• Keeping in mind the requirements, age-group, gender, and other factors while designing.

Form and function

• The form is incomplete without function. To define a large space or form it is necessary to follow the function.
• To analyze the reason behind the formation of a certain building and how it merges with the surroundings or why it stands out and does not merge with the surroundings.
• Why the architect of the building adopted either of the philosophies, “form follows function” or “function follows form”.

Circulation- Horizontal and Vertical

• Size and area of corridor and lobbies.
• Placement of staircases, ramps, elevators, etc.

Structure- Column, beam, etc.

• Analyzing the structure detail.
• Types of beams, columns, and trusses used, for example, I- section beam, C- section beam.

Building services or systems

• Analyzing the space requirement of HVAC, fire alarm system, water supply system, etc.

Consideration of Barrier-free environment in design detailing

• Designing keeping the requirements of disabled people, children, pregnant women, etc. in mind.

Access and approach

• Entry and exit locations into the site as well as into the building.
• Several entries and exit points.

How to conduct a Case Study?

When students begin studying  Architecture at a University, the first thing that they are supposed to become excellent at, is doing a documentation or a case study . It could be a case study of a small village, town, a villa, a bus-stop, or a high-rise commercial or residential building. A case study is an in-depth investigation of a single individual, group, incident, or community. Other ways include experiments, surveys , or analysis of archival information

What is the purpose of conducting a Case Study?

As the term Case Study suggests, it is the study of a particular case that is similar to your topic of design project. Doing a case study will help you understand the various aspects that you have to consider while designing.

Literature Case study

Before you start with your live case studies, first of all do a complete literature case study. Literature case study consists of reading everything you can find on the subject. You can refer books in a library, use Google to look up research papers, check out Standard Code books and statutory laws or from technical journals.

A literature case study would give you a vague idea about your topic. There will be various questions arising in your mind after you are done with your literature case study. To find the answers to those questions, you will have to go for minimum two live case studies….

Always possibly go for more than two different case studies, because a comparative case study of two or more different cases is very important and helpful.

• While you are doing your first case study, say a Villa, go for a smaller Villa first so that you can figure out the basic minimum requirements.
• In your second case study, go for an extremely lavish Villa so that you are aware of the maximum requirements you could give.

(Being able to provide maximum or minimum requirements in your design is very important)

If there are some requirements that you haven’t come across while doing your case studies but you went through it while you were doing a literature case study, then try implementing those requirements  in your design.

Eleven most important things to analyze in any Case Study

• Environment and micro-climate Analyzing the surrounding environment and the micro-climate of that place will help understand the reason of the orientation of the structure, the kind of roof chosen and the materials used in its construction.
• User behavior and requirements Studying the functioning of a particular place, say a Hospital, is very important; without which you will not be able to figure out the requirements and the area that should be allotted for each of the requirements.Talking to people working at that place (Hospital), will help you figure out if the requirements that are provided are adequate and he area that is allotted is sufficient for its efficient working.
• Utility and space enhancement Study of Utilitarian facilities of a particular case is also important. Various measures taken to enhance a particular space should be analyzed.
• Form and Function Analyzing the reason behind the form of that particular building…and how it merges with the surrounding environment. Form and Function go hand in hand. The form of the building should be able to convey the function of the building. A lot of Architects say “Form follows Function”.As an example, an institutional building should not end up looking like a museum or a disco.Some other Architects might disagree with that philosophy. They’d say that the function of a structure keeps changing but changing the form of the building everytime its function changes is not possible. They say, Adopt a “Universal Design Scheme”.
• Horizontal and vertical circulation Horizontal circulation consists of elements such as the corridors and lobbies. Vertical circulation includes elevators, staircases, ramps etc. The efficiency of the placement of these services should be analyzed.
• Site Planning and Landscape detailing Refer to the Article on the blog “ A Guide to Site Planning “, which deals with different aspects considered in site planning in greater detail.
• Structural details such as Column and Beam Design, Steel  and Composite structures Understanding and analyzing the structural details is also important. For example, large span structures such as Auditoriums use trusses or heavy I-section steel beams and sometimes shell-roofing that involve construction of Ring beams whereas in small span structures, RCC construction is used.
• Building Services such as Fire Alarm system, HVAC, Water supply systems The working of Fire Alarm system, HVAC and Water supply systems should be examined and their space requirements are to be analyzed.
• Design detailing considering the Barrier-free environment Implementation of the Barrier-free architecture for comfortable access to disabled people. Most public buildings have mandatory accessibility systems for the disabled. Check out Guidelines to the Disability Standards for Access to Premises 200X. (Australian law)
• Socio-economic profile of user group It might also be important to find out the socio-economic profile of the people using the services so as to determine their requirements and available resources.
• Parking details and standards Measure the allotted parking area on site, say for ten cars, then calculate the average area for each car and compare it with the areas specified in TSS (Time Savers Standards).

Conducting a case study is hard work. Sometimes, it is so small, it could be done in days, but on other occasions, it takes weeks to document and compile all the data. It involves going on-site, meeting and taking to people, lots of traveling, plenty of photography, and some fun. It is the most important of assignments you might get as an architectural students.

This is where you learn from reality, actual stuff, as opposed to only theoretical knowledge. When I was learning law I took every chance I could get to learn from people actually doing the work I was aiming for, yes I did “donate” many hours to Winters & Yonker, P.A. , but in the end is was worth every minute. Looking at places first hand  and documenting information would give you many insights and ideas and let you peek into the minds of professional architects and designers who have used years of experience and improvisation to design and create incredible structures.

The hardest part is looking for related literature especially when your research topic is new. It may be that difficult but it is surely unique when done and published.

I’m an attorney and when studying law we spent the bulk of the time reading what is called caselaw which is existing decisions that forms our law. We are to find cases that support our clients’ fact scenario so that the decision is our clients’ favour.

The parallel with architecture is uncanny as architects use existing structures and environments to form the basis for a new project. As the saying goes, “no need to reinvent the wheel” but it’s good to evolve from existing structures. Likewise, the law evolves.

Case Study is itself a very necessary work to be done before appearing to anything to be done. It’s just a sample report before appearing for any cases to get it solved properly.

For me, Case Study is really important on anything you are planning in order to have a well planned and a successful outcome. Doing a Case Study on anything gives you an idea for the pro’s and con’s of that. I’m glad there’s such an article like this!

Case studies are a great way to plan lots of things, not just architectural projects. It’s almost like doing the work without actually doing the work, so you can identify sticking points, potential problems and lots more.

Number of sheets doesn’t matter until you pin down your inferences correctly …… for a first year student i guess a max of 1 or 2 A1 sheets or a ppt of less than 20 slides should be enough in terms of quantity …. make sure you put the point across 🙂 🙂

For a project like that, you should visit a minimum of two schools. One would be a high profile school and the other one could be a private low budget school or a government school. After you casestudies you will be able to draw comparisons between the two and that should help you come up with your list of requirements. let me know if you have any other questions.

It is not an excellent topic for design. You should have chosen something that would let you explore your ideas. Embassy building would look like a commercial block…nothing interesting… this is not something people havent seen. I do not think you will get permission for a livecasestudy of any embassy. No one would let you in. So if you still have time, i would suggest you choose a more design oriented topic.

The Live Case Study Series offers students an insider perspective of what it is like to be a family entrepreneur. During each event, a guest with a strong family entrepreneurship background presents a challenge they are facing at the nexus of business, family and personal. In a highly interactive discussion, students form groups to discuss how this issue relates to their personal situation and to come up with solutions to the guest’s challenge.

MAS Holdings is one of the largest apparel manufacturers in Sri Lanka and is noted for its emphasis on ethical and sustainable work environments. Its customers include Victoria's Secrets, Nike, Lululemon, and PVH.

Live Case Study: The Project

• evaluate the business of the firm, and its strengths or weaknesses.
• conduct an in-depth study of a deal that the bank or FI has been involved in.
• examine the competitive context: who were competing players, and how did your institution stack up against them?
• evaluate how well the deal has survived, after the fact..
• This is a group project. Each group must have about five individuals in it.
• Each person in the group will pick one or more aspects of firm and its deal to analyze: for example, corporate strategy, range of businesses, geographical and product policies, and how the deal fits in with these.
• One person should study the financial institution itself
• One person should perform a comparative industry analysis, looking at other companies in the same financial services business.
• One or more people should research the deal
• At the end of the process, the group will write one report. In this report, the results will be presented as a whole rather than as five separate parts.
• The financial institution may be large or small, domestic or international, a commercial or investment bank or money manager.
• I'd choose one for which plenty of information is publically available.
• Examples: Chase; Fidelity; BNP; Morgan Stanley Dean Witter; AIG.
• Perhaps an interesting "story" can be your guide. You'll find stories daily the Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, Institutional Investor, among other places.
• A 5-10 page case study, plus appendices, plus references including websites.
• The appendices should include relevant backup info including relevant financials, industry tables if appropriate, a table showing the sequence of events if appropriate, and any key articles.
• The case should conclude with a pithy summary of any major insights gained or lessons learned from the study.

Major study reveals if multivitamins actually help you live longer

Multivitamin supplements have become a routine addition to many Americans' diets, with as many as 1 in 3 U.S. adults consuming them regularly, but are these daily doses improving overall health and longevity?

A study from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) published Wednesday found that multivitamins won't help extend your life, with researchers reporting, "multivitamin use to improve longevity is not supported."

The study analyzed datafrom nearly 400,000 adults over 20 years. Participants had a median age of 61.5 years old and were generally healthy, with no history of chronic diseases, according to the study published in JAMA Network Open.

The study found no evidence that daily multivitamin consumption reduced the risk of death from conditions such as heart disease or cancer.

Rather than living longer, otherwise healthy people who took daily multivitamins were slightly more likely (4%) than non-users to die in the study period, according to researchers.

Researchers reported nearly 165,000 deaths occurring during the follow-up period of the study, out of the initial group of 390,000 participants.

The study, however, did not analyze data from people with pre-existing vitamin deficiencies.

"What this study shows is that, generally, multivitamins aren't going to help you live longer," Dr. Jade A Cobern, MD, MPH, board-certified physician in pediatrics and general preventive medicine, told ABC News.

"Even though the cost of many multivitamins isn't high, this is still an expense that many people can be spared from," Cobern said.

Cobern explained that, when possible, it's best to get vitamins and minerals from your diet, focusing on increasing vegetable intake and limiting red meat consumption, rather than relying solely on a supplement.

"We can all likely benefit from adding more vegetables and whole grains or legumes into our diets, reducing red meat intake, decreasing our sedentary time and reducing alcohol intake," Cobern suggested.

While taking a multivitamin supplement does not increase longevity, Cobern said it's important for people to ask their doctor to know if a multivitamin or specific vitamin supplement would be helpful in their case, based on their health history and diet.

"If a doctor prescribes a vitamin for someone, it's important to take that medication," Cobern said, adding, "I recommend everyone get routine health checkups and to talk to doctors about your dietary history and disclose any supplements you're taking in those appointments."

(CNN) – New research shows homosexual sex between animals is more common than we think.

Same-sex sexual behavior has been observed in more than 1,500 animal species.

But, the new study shows it’s massively underreported.

Out of 65 experts surveyed, 77% had observed such behaviors.

Only 48% collected data on them, and only 18% published their findings.

That’s due to multiple reasons, including researchers assuming the behaviors were rare or were not a research priority.

Many of the observations were also anecdotal and not the result of a systematic study.

Still, researchers concluded same-sex sexual behavior is likely widespread and natural in the animal kingdom.

The study was published in the journal “ PLOSOne .” It was conducted by American, Canadian and Polish scientists.

Tears flow as witnesses recount victims in Wade Wilson capital murder trial

Kristine Melton's cousin, who also happened to be her best friend, dried tears as she read a scripted statement in remembrance of the brutally murdered woman, accompanied by her husband.

Wade Wilson, 30, faces a possible death penalty. A jury convicted him on June 12 of the 2019 first-degree murders of Melton, 35, and Diane Ruiz, 43, and other charges linked to the crimes.

The penalty phase in Wade Wilson's capital murder trial began Monday. The penalty phase only happens in capital murder trials, where the accused faces the death penalty. It begins after the jury convicts the accused of the first-degree murder charge.

The jury may choose whether to recommend the death penalty or life in prison without parole, with testimony taking up all of Monday into the evening hours. On Tuesday, Lee Circuit Judge Nicholas Thompson is expected to allow closing arguments before he sends the jury to deliberate.

Family members, friends and medical experts testified Monday.

Cousin said Kristine Melton, a godmother, loved travel

Melton's cousin, Samantha Catomer, said they were best friends and that Melton was her child's godmother. Catomer's husband stood by her as she testified. Catomer was frequently engulfed in tears.

Catomer said Melton loved to dress up. Halloween was among her favorite holidays.

"He threw her away like garbage," Catomer said of Wilson, later adding that Melton "was precious, not just to me, but to everyone who knew her."

Melton had a quick wit, Catomer said. She said everyone felt safe and understood around her.

"She was a relief just to sit next to her," Catomer said.

As Catomer continued to describe Melton, she said she became her child's godmother. Catomer described that milestone as Melton's "greatest honor."

"Kristine will never experience motherhood, a role she was born to play," Catomer said, adding that Melton loved to travel and "get to know the world."

Melton lived less than a block away from her mother, Catomer said. She added Melton's mother was horrified after the murder and moved to Maryland with one of Melton's other siblings.

Melton's mother has not been present throughout the trial.

Catomer occasionally stared at Wilson as she read her prepared statement.

"Losing Kristine is like losing your son," Catomer said. "I would not wish it on my worst enemy."

Catomer also identified Melton's cat, who she said sat by her "crumbled body," as authorities arrived.

"Look at her," Catomer said, looking at Wilson. "I know you can."

The pictures were shown to jurors on a screen.

Zane Romero says mother Diane Ruiz missed major milestone

Ruiz's murder happened just days before she was set to watch her son debut in his high school band program.

Zane Romero was a freshman and now studies graphic design in college.

Ruiz was Romero's only living parent. Romero wanted her to watch his marching band performance later that week. Her murder happened on a Monday.

"I never got to see her in the crowd," Romero said.

Romero said Ruiz was engaged and months away from getting married.

"She was so close to getting everything she wanted," said Romero, who grew up with his mother wherever she went. Ruiz was murdered when Wilson stopped her and said he could not find a Cape Coral school. He enticed Ruiz to ride in Melton's car, which he drove after her slaying.

Wilson murdered Ruiz in Melton's car before he ran her over between 10 and 20 times, testimony uncovered.

Romero, who sighed while his voice pitch became affected by his emotions, recounted the accomplishments his mother has missed.

He completed three years of marching band, won awards for his photography and got accepted into all the colleges he applied. One of those colleges offered him a full ride, he said.

"My mom will never get to see me get married," Romero said.

Romero said he was involved in a severe car accident his freshman year of college and was taken to the intensive care unit.

"I wasn’t able to call my mom," he said.

Romero reviewed a series of pictures he took of and with his mother.

He also became emotional when he pointed at a specific photograph Ruiz took of him. Romero said he was not a fan of being photographer, but on one particular occasion, he allowed that Ruiz take his photograph.

It is the only time he said he allowed his mother photograph him, he said, as a Mother's Day gift.

Physicians weigh in on Wade Wilson's psychology

Three physicians testified Monday as to Wilson's mental health.

The defense called experts Dr. Hyman Eisenstein and Dr. Mark Mills, while the state called Dr. Michael Herkov.

They evaluated a series of clinical tests performed on Wilson as recently as last week.

Their various testimony revealed Wilson's parents, then 14 and 15, gave him for adoption. He grew up in the Tallahassee area, where he went to school.

Wilson received A, B and C grades, for the most part, they said. He struggled with mathematics.

Eisenstein, a neuropsychologist, said he met Wilson on three occasions. He said his test results show he was very effective at the beginning of the provided tests, but his performance declined quickly soon after.

Through his puberty, Wilson was "acting fine," Eisenstein said he determined. Wilson was active in sports and went to church.

Wilson's mental health changed after his puberty years, Eisenstein said.

Mood swings and the thought of an alien presence "out to get him" were among the symptoms Eisenstein noted.

Wilson was 15 or 16 when he was involuntarily committed to a mental hospital during a separate incident and released the following day. He was also expelled from high school on drug accusations.

Wade Wilson was afraid of deputies present during testing

While experts tested Wilson to prepare the penalty phase in the trial, Eisenstein said, Wilson asked that two jail deputies standing in the room as a safety precaution step out.

Eisenstein said Wilson cited privacy concerns.

The two deputies said they had to remain in the room during the testing, but they stepped outside after Wilson raised confidentiality issues, the testimony uncovered.

"He's very impulsive, he's very fast," Eisenstein noted of Wilson. Eisenstein reiterated Wilson is accurate toward the beginning, but his performance later wanes.

Wilson's testing score placed him in the borderline for the average percentiles and found he was not looking to fake, Eisenstein said.

His IQ was found to be 92, which is in the lower average range, with a "profoundly impaired" executive function, Eisenstein said. Being under the influence of a controlled substance would have brought his score even lower, he added.

"He was very interactive" during the testing, Eisenstein said of Wilson, who the doctor said has a "whole series" of head injuries.

The first of them, Eisenstein said, happened when Wilson was 10 on the baseball field. When Wilson was 11, he suffered a concussion during a football game, Eisenstein said.

At age 18, he was involved in a car crash, Eisenstein said, adding that Wilson was not wearing a seatbelt when the car crashed into tree. It was the first of two similar car crashes Wilson suffered in the span of three years, Eisenstein said.

During the time between both crashes, Eisenstein said, Wilson at age 20 overdosed on narcotics and suffered a seizure.

Eisenstein said he concluded Wilson suffered from "neurocognitive" brain impairment.

When Assistant State Attorney Sara Miller asked Eisenstein if he reviewed the 911 calls related to the case, Eisenstein said he did not. Miller is prosecuting the case along with Assistant State Attorney Andreas Gardiner.

Eisenstein said he did not review the statements Melissa Montanez — a victim in one of the listed charges — provided either.

Mills, a forensic psychiatrist, said he worked cohesively with Eisenstein.

Among the documents he reviewed was a letter written by Wilson's adoptive sister, Wendy Wilson, a radiologist, Mills said.

Wade Wilson exaggerated symptoms

Mills said Wade Wilson invalidated some tests when he exaggerated symptoms most people do not have.

During the different testing, Mills said, Wade Wilson appeared "very wary and very watchful."

Mills said his testing uncovered Wade Wilson in 2007 became paranoid, hostile and isolated.

"I don’t know exactly what Mr. Wilson has, but it is very significant," Mills said.

As a teenager, Wade Wilson believed others would harm him and his family, Mills said.

Mills said that while his testing uncovered anomalies in Wade Wilson, the convicted killer self-reported his clinical history.

Most of his older files spanning back to his childhood and teenage years were destroyed in a fire.

After Eisenstein and Mills testified, state prosecutors called Dr. Michael Herkov, a clinical and forensic neuropsychologist, to the stand.

Herkov said he met with Wade Wilson on June 19.

According to Herkov, Wade Wilson said he would only give him 15 minutes, but they spent over an hour.

Herkov said Wade Wilson does not suffer from any disorder. He also declined noticing any memory issues in Wade Wilson.

Wade Wilson chooses not to testify

Wade Wilson declined to testify, similar to what happened during the guilt phase of the trial, the same day jurors convicted him.

Defense lawyers Lee Hollander and Kevin Shirley said they had separated a series of photographs that pictured Wade Wilson along with his adoptive family.

The images were admitted into evidence after state prosecutors OK'd their use, but Wade Wilson said he did not want them shown to jurors, citing the appearance of specific relatives. He did not indicate which relatives' appearance he disagreed with.

State prosecutors present four aggravating factors

Gardiner, who presented the opening arguments for the state Monday morning, said the state is relying on four aggravating factors — which could ultimately mean Wade Wilson receives the capital punishment.

Jurors only need to find one aggravator exists to recommend death.

Gardiner said the murders of Melton and Ruiz had three characteristics in common: both victims were selected, secluded and strangled.

"I’ve already done it, I’ll do it again," Gardiner reminded jurors that Wade Wilson told detectives during a recorded interview at the Lee County Jail.

Gardiner said Ruiz "came back to life" three or four times as she confronted Wade Wilson's attack.

"Both Kristine Melton and Diane Ruiz endured a high level of pain," Gardiner said.

A different aggravator, Gardiner said, is that Wade Wilson was on probation for a felony he had committed in Palm Beach County two-and-a-half weeks before the Oct. 7, 2019, murders.

Wade Wilson will die in prison, defense says

Shirley said Wade Wilson will die in prison "either way."

"This portion of the trial is critical," Shirley said. "It’s critical to you, and it’s critical to Mr. Wilson."

Shirley said the verdict will be "one of the most important" decisions jurors will make in their lives.

A closer look into legal showdown in the YSL RICO case after the Fulton County Superior Court judge denied Young Thug’s lawyer’s motion that the judge step down from the case. However, the fallout from the judge's alleged secret meeting with a witness is far from over.

ATLANTA - The Supreme Court of Georgia has dismissed an emergency motion filed by Deamonte Kendrick, a defendant in the YSL RICO trial . Kendrick sought to disqualify Fulton County Chief Judge Ural Glanville from presiding over his case. 

Kendrick's motion originated from a meeting involving Judge Glanville, assistant district attorneys, a state's witness, and the witness's attorney. Kendrick's attorneys found out about the meeting two days later on  June 10. He filed the motion to recuse Judge Glanville, arguing that the judge improperly denied the motion without referring it to another judge. 

In an unusual legal maneuver, Kendrick's attorney bypassed the normal appellate process, claiming that the case would ultimately return to Judge Glanville. The motion also requested an unredacted transcript of the meeting in question.

The Supreme Court's decision underscored its policy of exercising original jurisdiction only in exceptional circumstances. The court noted that Kendrick had not pursued relief through standard legal procedures, specifically a standalone mandamus petition in the superior court. 

The court emphasized that if such a petition were filed, Chief Judge Glanville would be automatically disqualified from presiding over it, and the matter would be assigned to another judge. As a result, Kendrick's emergency petition for a writ of mandamus and a stay of proceedings was dismissed.

A jury in U.S. District Court ordered the NFL to pay nearly $4.8 billion in damages Thursday after ruling that the league violated antitrust laws in distributing out-of-market Sunday afternoon games on a premium subscription service

LOS ANGELES -- A jury in U.S. District Court ordered the NFL to pay nearly $4.8 billion in damages Thursday after ruling that the league violated antitrust laws in distributing out-of-market Sunday afternoon games on a premium subscription service.

The jury awarded $4.7 billion in damages to the residential class and $96 million in damages to the commercial class. Since damages can be tripled under federal antitrust laws, the NFL could end up being liable for $14.39 billion.

The lawsuit covered 2.4 million residential subscribers and 48,000 businesses in the United States who paid for the package of out-of-market games from the 2011 through 2022 seasons on DirecTV. The lawsuit claimed the league broke antitrust laws by selling its package of Sunday games at an inflated price. The subscribers also say the league restricted competition by offering “Sunday Ticket” only on a satellite provider.

The NFL said it would appeal the verdict. That appeal would go to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals and then possibly the Supreme Court.

Should the NFL end up paying damages, it could cost each of the 32 teams approximately $449.6 million.

“We are disappointed with the jury’s verdict today in the NFL Sunday Ticket class action lawsuit,” the league said in a statement. “We continue to believe that our media distribution strategy, which features all NFL games broadcast on free over-the-air television in the markets of the participating teams and national distribution of our most popular games, supplemented by many additional choices including RedZone, Sunday Ticket and NFL+, is by far the most fan friendly distribution model in all of sports and entertainment.

“We will certainly contest this decision as we believe that the class action claims in this case are baseless and without merit.”

The trial lasted three weeks and featured testimony from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.

“Justice was done. The verdict upholds protection for the consumers in our class. It was a great day for consumers,” plaintiffs attorney Bill Carmody said.

During his closing remarks, Carmody showed an April, 2017, NFL memo that showed the league was exploring a world without “Sunday Ticket” in 2017, where cable channels would air Sunday afternoon out-of-market games not shown on Fox or CBS.

The jury of five men and three women deliberated for nearly five hours before reaching its decision.

Judge Philip S. Gutierrez is scheduled to hear post-trial motions on July 31, including the NFL’s request to have him rule in favor of the league because the judge determined the plaintiffs did not prove their case.

Payment of damages, any changes to the “Sunday Ticket” package and/or the ways the NFL carries its Sunday afternoon games would be stayed until all appeals have been concluded.

The league maintained it had the right to sell “Sunday Ticket” under its antitrust exemption for broadcasting. The plaintiffs said that only covers over-the-air broadcasts and not pay TV.

Other professional sports leagues were also keeping an eye on this case since they also offer out-of-market packages. A major difference though is that MLB, the NBA and the NHL market their packages on multiple distributors and share in the revenue per subscriber instead of receiving an outright rights fee.

DirecTV had “Sunday Ticket” from its inception in 1994 through 2022. The league signed a seven-year deal with Google’s YouTube TV that began with the 2023 season.

The lawsuit was originally filed in 2015 by the Mucky Duck sports bar in San Francisco but was dismissed in 2017. Two years later, the 9th Circuit, which has jurisdiction over California and eight other states, reinstated the case. Gutierrez ruled last year the case could proceed as a class action.

Here’s the latest news about a global outbreak of H5N1 bird flu that started in 2020, and recently spread among cattle in U.S. states and marine mammals across the world, which has health officials closely monitoring it and experts concerned the virus could mutate and eventually spread to humans, where it has proven rare but deadly.

June 25 Finland said it plans to begin vaccinating vulnerable populations like farm workers against bird flu as early as next week using 10,000 vaccine series—each with two doses—acquired as part of a European Union deal with vaccine maker CSL Seqirus to provide up to 40 million vaccines to 15 countries.

June 11 The World Health Organization announced a four-year-old child in India was infected with H9N2 bird flu—a different flu strain from H5N1—but recovered after suffering from seizures, respiratory distress, fever and abdominal cramps; H9N2 has infected around 100 people globally since 1998, and this is the second human case in India.

June 6 Dozens of cows infected with bird flu have either died or been slaughtered in Colorado, Ohio, Michigan, South Carolina and Texas, which is unusual since—unlike poultry—cows cost more to slaughter and around 90% usually make a full recovery, Reuters reported .

May 1 The Department of Agriculture said it tested 30 grocery store ground beef products for bird flu and they all came back negative, reaffirming the meat supply is safe.

May 1 The Food and Drug Administration confirmed dairy products are still safe to consume, announcing it tested grocery store samples of products like infant formula, toddler milk, sour cream and cottage cheese, and no live traces of the bird flu virus were found, although some dead remnants were found in some of the food—though none in the baby products.

April 18 Jeremy Farrar, chief scientist for the World Health Organization, said during a press conference the threat of bird flu spreading between humans was a “great concern,” since it’s evolved and has increasingly been infecting mammals (on land and sea), which means it could possibly spread to humans.

April 1 The CDC reported the second U.S. human case of bird flu in a Texas dairy farmer who became infected after contracting the virus from infected dairy cows, but said the person was already recovering.

Can Bird Flu Spread Between Humans?

Bird flu doesn’t “transmit easily from person-to-person,” according to the World Health Organization. Bird flu rarely affects humans, and most previous cases came from close contact with infected poultry, according to the CDC. Because human-to-human spread of bird flu poses “pandemic potential,” each human case is investigated to rule out this type of infection. Though none have been confirmed, there are a few global cases—none in the U.S.—where human-to-human transmission of bird flu was thought to be “probable,” including in China , Thailand , Indonesia and Pakistan .

Is Bird Flu Fatal To Humans?

It is very deadly. Between January 2003 and March 28, 2024 there have been 888 human cases of bird flu infection in humans, according to a report by the World Health Organization. Of those 888 cases, 463 (52%) died. To date, only two people in the U.S. have contracted H5N1 bird flu, and they both were infected after coming into contact with sick animals. The most recent case was a dairy worker in Texas who became ill in March after interacting with sick dairy cows, though he only experienced pink eye. The first incident happened in 2022 when a person in Colorado contracted the disease from infected poultry, and fully recovered.

Is It Safe To Drink Milk Infected With Bird Flu?

Raw, unpasteurized milk is unsafe to drink, but pasteurized milk is fine, according to the FDA. Bird flu has been detected in both unpasteurized and pasteurized milk, but the FDA recommends manufacturers against making and selling unpasteurized milk since there’s a possibility consuming it may cause bird flu infection. However, the virus remnants in pasteurized milk have been deactivated by the heat during the pasteurization process , so this type of milk is still believed safe to consume.

Is It Safe To Consume Meat Infected With Bird Flu?

The CDC warns against eating raw meat or eggs from animals “confirmed or suspected” of having bird flu because of the possibility of transmission. However, no human has ever been infected with bird flu from eating properly prepared and cooked meat, according to the agency. The possibility of infected meat entering the food supply is “extremely low” due to rigorous inspection, so properly handled and cooked meat is safe to eat, according to the USDA. To know when meat is properly cooked, whole beef cuts must be cooked to an internal temperature of 145 degrees Fahrenheit, ground meat must be 160 degrees and poultry must be cooked to 165 degrees. Rare and medium rare steaks fall below this temperature. Properly cooked eggs with an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit kills bacteria and viruses including bird flu, according to the CDC. “It doesn’t matter if they may or may not have [avian] influenza… runny eggs and rare pieces of meat” are never recommended, Francisco Diez-Gonzalez, director and professor for the Center for Food Safety at the University of Georgia, told Forbes. To “play it safe,” consumers should only eat fully cooked eggs and make sure “the yolks are firm with no runny parts,” Daisy May, veterinary surgeon with U.K.-based company Medivet, said .

What Are Bird Flu Symptoms In Humans?

Symptoms of bird flu include a fever, cough, headache, chills, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, runny nose, congestion, sore throat, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, pink eye, muscle aches and headache. However, the CDC advises it can’t be diagnosed based on symptoms alone, and laboratory testing is needed. This typically includes swabbing the nose or throat (the upper respiratory tract), or the lower respiratory tract for critically ill patients.

How Is Bird Flu Affecting Egg Prices?

This year’s egg prices have increased as production decreased due to bird flu outbreaks among poultry, according to the USDA. A dozen large, grade A eggs in the U.S. costed around $2.99 in March, up almost a dollar from the fall. However, this price is down from a record $4.82 in January 2023, which was also spiked by bird flu outbreaks . Earlier this month, Cal-Maine Foods—the country’s largest egg producer—temporarily halted egg production after over one million egg-laying hens and chickens were killed after being infected with bird flu.

Why Do Poultry Farmers Kill Chickens With Bird Flu?

Once chickens have been infected with bird flu, farmers quickly kill them to help control the spread of the virus, since bird flu is highly contagious and fatal in poultry. The USDA pays farmers for all birds and eggs that have to be killed because of bird flu, as an incentive to responsibly try and curb the spread of the disease. The USDA has spent over $1 billion in bird flu compensation for farmers since 2022, according to the nonprofit Food & Environment Reporting Network.

Is There A Vaccine For The Bird Flu (h5n1)?

The FDA has approved a few bird flu vaccines for humans. The U.S. has a stockpile of vaccines for H5N1 bird flu, but it wouldn’t be enough to vaccinate all Americans if an outbreak were to happen among humans. If a human outbreak does occur, the government plans to mass produce vaccines, which can take at least six months to make enough for the entire population. CSL Seqirus, the maker of one of the approved vaccines, expects to have 150 million vaccines ready within six months of an announcement of a human bird flu pandemic. Although there are approved vaccines for other variants designed for birds, there are none for the H5N1 variant circulating. However, the USDA began trials on H5N1 animal-specific vaccines in 2023.

As of May 30, more than 92 million poultry (primarily chickens) in 48 states have been euthanized because of bird flu since 2022, and 57 dairy cow herds across nine states have tested positive, according to data from the CDC (unlike chickens, cows appear to recover from the virus). The USDA believes wild migratory birds are the original source of the cow outbreaks that recently has experts concerned it may mutate and spread more easily in humans, though the CDC said its risk to the public remains low . Farrar called the cattle infections in the U.S. a “huge concern,” urging public health officials to continue closely monitoring the situation “because it may evolve into transmitting in different ways.” The increased number of mammal bird flu infections since 2022 “could indicate that the virus is looking for new hosts, and of course, moving closer to people,” Andrea Garcia, vice president of science, medicine and public health for the American Medical Association, said . The first report of a walrus dying from bird flu was detected in April on one of Norway’s Arctic Islands, and the first U.S. dolphin infected with bird flu died back in 2022, according to a report published April 18. More than 10 human bird flu cases were reported to the World Health Organization in 2023, and all but one survived. Bird flu has devastated bird populations, and 67 countries reported the deaths of 131 million poultry in 2022 alone. Although bird flu typically infects wild birds and poultry, it’s spread to other animals during the outbreak, and at least 10 countries have reported outbreaks in mammals since 2022. Around 17,400 elephant seal pups died from bird flu in Argentina in 2023, and at least 24,000 sea lions died in South America the same year. Besides cattle, bird flu has been detected in over 200 other mammals—like seals, raccoons and bears—in the U.S. since 2022. Although rare, even domestic pets like dogs and cats are susceptible to the virus, and the FDA warns against giving unpasteurized milk to cats to avoid possible transmission.

On June 5, WHO confirmed the first human death of a strain of bird flu that’s never before been seen in humans and is separate from H5N1. A 59-year-old man in Mexico contracted H5N2, and died on April 24 after being hospitalized and developing a fever, diarrhea, nausea, shortness of breath and general discomfort. Cases of H5N2 have been reported in poultry in Mexico, but the man had no history with poultry or animals, WHO said. It’s unclear how he became infected. He was bedridden for weeks prior to the infection, and suffered from several other health conditions.
