Wondermind Will Destigmatize Mental Health with Its 360 Degree Ecosystem

NEW YORK , April 4, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- Selena Gomez , Mandy Teefey and Daniella Pierson announce the first drop of Wondermind , the world's first mental fitness ecosystem with a mission to democratize and destigmatize mental health globally via daily editorial content, insightful entertainment, and tangible tools.

Wondermind  is a comprehensive, multifaceted platform designed to offer a new category of inclusive mental fitness support, while normalizing mental health by covering honest, real-life topics. Inspired by the founders' own mental health journeys, Gomez, Teefey and Pierson have joined forces to create a platform rooted in actionable healing, for all gender identities, races and ages, all developed in partnership with their committee of licensed professionals from diverse fields and backgrounds.

"Every person has their own mental health journey. If we ignore them, glamorize them or hide them from the world, it doesn't change that the journey is very real," says co-founder, entrepreneur and mental health advocate Selena Gomez . "Wondermind is extending a larger mental health conversation that began for so many during this pandemic."

Wondermind  is taking expert-backed treatment methods and turning them into a more creative and more accessible resource. It will debut with a 3x weekly newsletter content experience featuring guided and editorialized content–offering tips, resources, interviews and a compelling point of view on mental health. In addition to speaking to experts and giving a stage to raw and real content, they will also debut a monthly "cover story" featuring global names.

This summer, Wondermind will also launch a weekly podcast and audio experience, "MindHit," that features approachable, honest interviews with a variety of notable personalities, including prominent psychiatrists, athletes and celebrities and leaves listeners with actionable insights and advice. As part of the podcast network, a second podcast will launch, featuring conversations with founders and leaders in the business world getting real about their mental fitness and mindsets. The newsletter and podcast network will be followed by an innovative product line which will include first-of-their-kind physical tools, created in partnership with top mental health professionals, to encourage users to make tangible progress in their own mental fitness. Wondermind will eventually develop into a multimedia brand producing TV and original film content.

"We hope to be the one stop shop for all aspects of mental fitness. We have taken an unexpected and innovative chance on the way people can understand and participate in a creative foundation to show anyone that a shift is possible," says co-founder and co-CEO Mandy Teefey . "Far from medical or preachy, we've struck a balance between education, media and self-reflection that truly inspires growth."

"We created Wondermind as a mental fitness ecosystem where everyone is welcome," adds co-founder and co-CEO Daniella Pierson . "We hope to democratize and destigmatize mental health by providing users with content, tools, and resources backed by proven science and psychological treatments, while normalizing the conversation on a global scale."

Selena Gomez Launches Wondermind Mental Health Platform, Says "It's OK to Not Be OK"

WESTWOOD, CALIFORNIA - JANUARY 11: Selena Gomez attends the premiere of Universal Pictures'

Selena Gomez is turning her years of mental health advocacy into something more tenable. Today she launched Wondermind , a mental health company she'll head with her mom, Mandy Teefey, and media entrepreneur, Daniella Pierson, who previously founded The Newsette. Wondermind was described in a press release as a platform that "destigmatizes and democratizes mental health." Teefey said, "We hope to be the one stop shop for all mental fitness and conversation."

"We hope to be the one stop shop for all mental fitness."

So, what exactly will the "ecosystem for mental fitness" entail? The website will serve as the main hub with daily content, interviews with experts, and other tools and resources — free of charge. There will also be a weekly podcast featuring a variety of guests, including therapists and celebrities who are known for their mental health advocacy. "We'll talk to prominent psychiatrists and therapists who charge a thousand dollars an hour and share their resources. We'll also interview celebrities and ask them questions most people don't ask," Pierson said in an interview with Entrepreneur. In an interview with Good Morning America this morning , Gomez said, "We want to be that place where people feel comfortable to talk about the things under the hood. I really want people to be understood and seen and heard. It's OK to not be OK."

When Gomez revealed she had bipolar disorder in 2020 , she said, "It was really freeing to know that information. It made me really happy because I started to have a relationship with myself, and that's the best part."

Taking care of your mental health is so important, especially recently with the pandemic. So many people are struggling, and dealing with so many emotions, and "this emptiness that they're not used to navigating," Teefey said. "You should be working on your mental fitness just like you work on your physical fitness," Pierson added.

The eventual goal is to expand Wondermind into a production company that also releases books, exercise journals, and streaming content. Its founders have experience in that capacity, as Teefey was an executive producer on "13 Reasons Why" along with Gomez. "Something I've always tried to do in my career is make sure I lend my voice to places where it matters," Gomez told Entrepreneur. "And I have to give my mom credit for that because she taught me everything."

The platform is personal for all three founders: Pierson has an obsessive compulsive disorder diagnosis ; Teefey is open about her experience with anxiety, ADHD, and unpacking childhood trauma; and Gomez has spoken publicly about dealing with anxiety and depression. "Every person has their own mental health journey," Gomez said in the Wondermind press release. "If we ignore them, pretty them up or hide them from the world, it doesn't change that they are very, very real."

Selena Gomez partners to create Wondermind, a company advocating mental health fitness

wondermind mental fitness no essay scholarship

DETROIT (FOX 2) - Mental health is a struggle that more Americans are faced with daily. Selena Gomez has teamed up to form Wondermind, a way to help one another to navigate our mental fitness.

With the daily stresses of a work-life balance, family, a global pandemic, and whatever else life throws at us, there is no wonder why our mental health is more at risk now than ever.

Their story is simple, ‘Wondermind is our space to let it all out,’ as clearly displayed on Wondermind's front homepage . They are trying to take a new approach to mental health, similar to a fitness app., always at our fingertips, with the goal to end the stigma around mental health.

RELATED: Stopping the Stigma on Mental Illness

The Wondermind website greets users with a welcome video from its three creators. The founders are three women who are open to their own mental health struggles. Mandy (Amanda) Teefey, 45, along with Daniella Pierson, 26, are the co-founders and co-CEOs of Wondermind. They both have additional business initiatives that they have founded and are CEO of as well.

With them, is Selena Gomez, 29, as the Chief Impact Officer. Much of the media attention given to Wondermind surrounds Gomez, who is a singer, actor, producer, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, who says she uses her platform to advocate for important causes. One of those causes is through her makeup company, Rare Beauty’s Rare Impact Fund, where Gomez committed to raising $100 million over the next 10 years. Her goal is to help give people access to the mental health resources and support that they need.

Gomez, who was diagnosed bipolar in 2020, says she lives with it, not that she suffers from it anymore.

"Putting your heart and soul out there, and being vulnerable and seeking help is one of the most terrifying things in the world, but requires so much courage and bravery," Gomez said.

Teefey, who is actually Gomez’s mom, knows mental health struggles. She gave birth to Gomez at just 16. She and the father, Rick Gomez, married but divorced five years later. Teefey later remarried in 2006, and in 2011, at the age of 34, lost her baby girl due to a miscarriage. She was open about losing her baby, Scarlett. About two later, she gave birth to another baby girl, Gracie Elliot Teefey.

"I was misdiagnosed with bipolar for over 20 years, and I had to go to a facility, where I found out I was actually ADHD with trauma," added Teefey.

There is also a personal letter to fans, where all three women open up about the mental health struggles they’ve faced over the years, where they say 'we realized there was no inclusive, fun, and easy place where people could come together to explore, discuss, and navigate their feelings. So we created it. Welcoming to Wondermind.’

Wondermind is also resourced with six mental health advocates, in a variety of specialties. It’s scattered with positive affirmations throughout, reminding those who are looking for healthier mental answers, to ‘Be kind to your mind, Let's rethink how we think.’

Though they admit that it takes more than an inspirational quote to change the way your brain works. They highly emphasize mental fitness, saying, ‘You work out your body, but what about your mind?’

According to a study done in 2020 by the National Institute of Mental Health  (NIMH), nearly one in five U.S. adults live with a mental illness. That’s almost 53 million people.

Mental illness includes many different conditions, and vary in the degree of severity, ranging from mild to moderate to severe. The conditions can either be categorized as any mental illness (AMI), which covers all recognized mental illnesses, or serious mental illness (SMI), which are conditions that are smaller and more severe.

In 2020, of the almost 53 million Americans with mental illnesses, the statics change on which age group or race has the highest number of cases, and those seeking treatment. But across the board, with every chart, women were always listed as having the majority of mental illness cases.

Wondermind aims to help people practice their mental fitness with the right tools, and honest conversations, but also, by changing the way we think and talk about our mental health. Not only to overcome the stigmas but to also shift your own mindsets, as well as to get any needed support—whatever that looks like for you.

"Like a workout for your mental health, Wondermind is where you’ll build your mental fitness routine through exclusive, honest conversations with people you've definitely heard of (and some you maybe haven't heard of...yet), mindset-shifting advice from experts, and essays that will make you feel seen and heard.   Less jargon—more meaningful, relatable stuff you can actually use."

"I think a golden rule is trying to live a lifestyle of moderation," says Vasilis K. Pozios, MD, Chief Medical Officer for the Oakland Community Health Network .

"Taking care of yourself by eating well, sleeping properly, being mindful of your sleep hygiene, but also engaging in social activities and connections that are fulling to you," added Pozios.

Having social activities and connections is important to our mental health. The lack of it within the last two years has shown how vital it can be. But for those who may still feel hesitant to be social due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Pozios agrees, but again, everything in moderation.

"I want to make it abundantly clear that the pandemic is not over, and that people should get vaccinated and boosted. Hopefully, we’re going to be looking at warmer weather soon, so engaging in outdoor activities is certainly safer to do during the pandemic. Just getting outside, seeing other people, dining outdoors, engaging in physical activities outdoors," said Pozios.

The women behind Wondermind encourage creating a routine, to work through your feelings and better understand your mind. Having the right tools and community to support growth is vital. It also means committing to a daily practice, even when you feel out of your comfort zone, which according to Wondermind, shows it’s working.

With daily, moderate routines, comes a healthy work-life balance, which we all know is easier said than done. Dr. Pozios says with everything, it’s important to do what is fulfilling to you, but sometimes, that deadline may be calling you, or your kids may be literally calling you.

"One of the hardest things for people to do is to say no. And saying no is not always possible of course, given what our responsibilities to work and family are, however, if you can, try to exercise that ability," said Pozios. "It’s important to know when your cup is full, and practicing saying no in a polite manner, knowing when you're taking on too much, and limiting your over engagement and setting better boundaries can really benefit your mental health and wellness."

It all comes together because if you bend so much, you'll break, and you wouldn't be good for yourself, or anyone else at that point. Additionally, when it comes to self-care, of course, Dr. Pozios says though it is not therapy, it can be helpful to do things that make you feel good. But of course, not every person has the same needs, which can be difficult for couples, or for anyone you share a close relationship with, whether intimate, with family, or with work. So Dr. Pozios has a great tip that could assist in all of those areas of our lives, and potentially help with our work-life balance.

"I think everybody could benefit from a regular checkup from the neck-up, as we say. So just as we go in for a physical every year, we should get comfortable and normalize going to see a mental health professional on a regular basis, just to check-in, and take stock of your mental health," said Pozios.

Dr. Pozios wants us to be aware of a few signs that may mean, you should seek treatment: when any of your relationships seem negatively impacted, your feeling down or anxious, having trouble eating, sleeping, and concentrating.

If you do feel like you need help, Oakland Community Health Network (OCHN) has a 24-hour crisis helpline, 1-800-231-1127. For Oakland County residents, they also have a non-urgent line, 248-464-6363, as well as a non-emergency care center, at 1200 Telegraph Road, in Pontiac. For those who cannot afford this help, or do not have insurance, OCHN offers payment assistance or can help enroll in Medicaid, for those who qualify.

With mental illnesses on the rise, especially among women, who statically do take on the majority of responsibilities at home and at work, the need for more resources, such as Wondermind, are so vital. We all know the toll that stress takes on our bodies, so having help that is easy to access is important for our minds and bodies. Also adding actual mental health apps on your phone could serve as a booster. Helpful mental fitness apps are: Wysa: Mental Health Support and Bloom: CBT Therapy & Self-Help  are two reputable mental health apps.

Additional local resources are always available at your doctor’s office, or online. The CDC has the People Seeking Help program , which offers specific resources based on your needs, such as LGBTQ+, veterans or active-duty military, and opioid treatment.

Other local programs include The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS)'s Community Mental Health Services Programs, The University of Michigan Health, Michigan Medicine’s Mental Health section, including their Mental Health Resource List

"Mental health treatment works, and we want to encourage people to normalize talking about mental health issues … Seeking help when it’s necessary," concluded Pozios.

  • “Being vulnerable and seeking help is one of the most terrifying things in the world,” Selena explained. “It requires much courage and bravery.”

Selena Gomez' new project Wondermind is out to change the way we think about mental health. The pop star, 29, started the company with her mom, Mandy Teefey, and Daniella Pierson "to create a world where caring for your mental health is democratized and destigmatized," according to Wondermind's website.

Wondermind emails daily mental health resources directly to subscribers that are designed to improve mental fitness. "It takes more than an inspirational quote to really change your mindset. Even if you see a therapist (which is amazing), you still need to work on yourself between sessions," the site says.

"(You wouldn’t expect physical fitness results seeing a trainer only once in a while, would you?) That’s what Wondermind is here for—to give you easy, doable ways to put your mental fitness first every single day."

"To us, mental fitness means creating a routine; working through your feelings to better understand your mind—with the right tools and community to support growth. It means committing to a daily practice, even when you feel out of your comfort zone (which shows it’s working!)," the founders explain on the site.

Wondermind includes everything from candid conversations about mental health to tangible tools designed to help users focus and reflect. As Selena says in a video on the website, "I want there to be a place of people coming together and understanding that they're not alone."

"Being vulnerable and seeking help is one of the most terrifying things in the world,” she continued. “It requires much courage and bravery.” In the clip, each founder shares their own mental health struggle: Mandy reveals her misdiagnosis before realizing she had ADHD, while Pierson mentions her lifelong battle with OCD.

And, Selena opens up about dealing with bipolar disorder. “I understand what it's like to be confused and not really understand what are these feelings and emotions coming from," she said. "I live with bipolar—I don't suffer from it anymore. I'm really happy and proud of the progress I have made.”

Wondermind is also creating a podcast "where no topic is taboo and everyone is welcome," according to the site. Based on a recent Instagram post from Selena, Wondermind is set to launch officially in 2022—but subscribers can sign up with their emails now for updates.

"Welcome to Wondermind! The first mental fitness ecosystem," Mandy wrote in a recent IG caption. "I’ve battled mental health since I was child and took me decades to realize with the right support and tools I can live with my ADHD and work through my trauma. So, we wanted to create an ecosystem for anybody and everybody to have access to these tools and celebrate their individuality!! Let’s wondermind!! XO @officialwondermind www.Wondermind.com."

Wondermind is a new company setting out to create a world where caring for your mental health is “democratized and destigmatized.” Its three cofounders are Selena Gomez (singer, actress, producer, and philanthropist), Mandy Teefey (Founder & CEO of Kicked to the Curb Productions, mother of Selena Gomez) and Daniella Pierson (Founder & CEO of The Newsette).

In November, I wrote about why mental fitness is more important than resilience .

I got to sit down with two of the three cofounders to discuss Wondermind, why they chose to use the language of mental fitness, and what we can expect next.

Julia Wuench : Why use the language of mental fitness versus mental health or resilience?

Daniella Pierson: We use the term “mental fitness” because it feels more approachable and less intimidating than “mental health,” and it also describes our philosophy: we believe you should work on your mental wellbeing every single day, just like you take care of your body. And Wondermind makes that easy, accessible, and entertaining.

Wuench: In your opinion, what makes somebody mentally fit?

Pierson: In our Wondermind world, being “mentally fit” means working on your mental health every single day. There is not a universal threshold. Everyone heals and grows at their own speed—what matters most is putting in the time and committing a few minutes every single day to reflect on your feelings, grow your mindset, and learn from others.

Apple iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Pro Release Date Claimed In Controversial New Report

Today’s nyt mini crossword clues and answers for thursday, august 22, bayesian yacht: bodies of entrepreneur michael lynch and morgan stanley chief recovered in italy.

Wuench: Why does the world need this and you to lead it?

Mandy Teefey: Social media that was created to connect people has disconnected people. We have lost community. The three [founders] have struggled with mental health issues for the majority of our lives. But, we will not be leading this on our own. Our community is still growing. We are learning with our community, not preaching to them. We will have professionals guiding our content and assisting us in creating tangible tools for our users.

Pierson: The world needs an ecosystem dedicated to normalizing working on your mind and stifling the stigma that prevents so many (including myself previously) from getting the professional help they need. For so long talking about your mental health struggles was perceived as “weak” or “embarrassing” but we are here to change the conversation and flip the script—people need to feel safe, excited, and hopeful, which is the environment we are building. As far as why we are the right people to do this, that’s simple: all three of us have suffered from the debilitating effects of mental illness and know firsthand how our Wondermind users feel, because we’ve lived through it (and continue to deal with it). Additionally, I love that we are all from three different generations—I’m Gen Z, Selena’s a millennial, and Mandy is Gen X—because it represents who we are targeting: everyone. Mental health doesn’t discriminate against age, race, gender, or socioeconomic status, and we’re excited to be inclusive to all.

Wuench: What experiences have the founders had that led to the inception of Wondermind?

Teefey: My mental health conditions were misdiagnosed when I was younger. After a 20-year struggle, I went to a mental health facility and found a supportive community. I was able to heal. I was correctly re-diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). But when I came home from the facility, it was much harder to find safe spaces to talk about mental health.

Pierson:  I realized something was wrong with me when I was six years old and I couldn’t sleep because there was black tape on one side of my canopy bed and not on the other—they weren’t even. From there I would annoy my family with rituals, including having to close doors a certain number of times, looking under the bed until it “felt right,” and bolting to doors or cabinets that weren’t entirely shut to close them. I didn’t realize what this was until freshman year of high school when I took a health class where we covered mental health disorders, where I finally discovered the three letters I had been searching for: OCD. It got worse, but I didn’t receive help until seven years later, as a senior in college. Now, five years later, my life has completely changed due to the extensive therapy, medicine, and support I’ve been lucky enough to receive. But not everyone is as lucky as I am to have access to these three things—so that’s why I decided, despite already being incredibly busy with my other business, that I had to help make Wondermind a reality.

Wuench: What do you hope Wondermind becomes?

Teefey: I hope Wondermind becomes the safe space I had the privilege of experiencing at the mental health facility. I hope it becomes the beginning of a world of acceptance about caring for our mental health.

Pierson : I hope Wondermind becomes the world’s largest mental fitness ecosystem via our three verticals—production, media, and product—and encourages millions to get professional help and treat their mental fitness just as important as they treat physical fitness.

Wuench: How can people learn more and get involved?

Teefey: We will be launching content in the beginning of 2022, but to get on our mailing list to receive our updates you can go to our website www.wondermind.com or @officialwondermind on all social platforms, except Twitter @letswondermind.

Selena Gomez Announces Wondermind, a New Mental Health Platform

wondermind mental fitness no essay scholarship

Selena Gomez is a proud advocate for mental health — and in 2022, she’ll be taking her advocacy a step further by launching her own media platform devoted to the cause.

The platform, called Wondermind , will be an online space that fosters community around mental health and provides tools and resources for those hoping to strengthen their “mental fitness,” with “no judgment, just progress.”

“To us, mental fitness means creating a routine; working through your feelings to better understand your mind,” the Wondermind site reads. “It means committing to a daily practice, even when you feel out of your comfort zone (which shows it’s working!).”

Wondermind is a collaboration between Selena, her mother Mandy Teefey , and founder and CEO of The Newsette, Daniella Pierson. All three women have experienced mental health struggles, and recognized a digital void — there was no media platform that supported or encouraged people as they worked through their mental wellbeing.

Instagram content

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

“I’m so excited about Wondermind, because I want there to be a place of people coming together and understanding that they’re not alone,” Selena says in the Wondermind welcome video .

One of the central missions of Wondermind is to end the stigma around mental health and mental illness, and to celebrate the courage of vulnerability. The “mental fitness ecosystem” will provide daily exercises designed to strengthen one’s mental health, produce a wide variety of digital content — video, daily on-site content, a podcast — and create physical products such as a journal and an hourglass intended to nourish one’s focus and creativity.

"Your mind is truly like a muscle, and to work on it every single day, it does require content and tools, and we're so happy to deliver that to you all," Wondermind co-founder Daniella Pierson adds in the welcome video.

According to CNN , Selena’s mother Mandy will act as the Wondermind podcast host, exchanging mental health stories and speaking with “notable psychiatrists, athletes, and celebrities.” Wondermind will also feature a “Committee of Mental Health Advocates,” including licensed therapist and wellness coach Minaa B. and author and licensed therapist John Kim.

This isn’t the first effort Selena has made towards destigmatizing mental health. For years, the singer has been vocal about her relationship to social media and the impact it’s had on her mental health, and has spoken publicly about her experiences with anxiety and depression .

Earlier this year, through her brand Rare Beauty, Selena launched a “Mental Health 101,” a wellness initiative and mental health fund that provides resources to young people struggling with their mental health. The initiative was launched only a few weeks after Selena shared that she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder .

“I live with bipolar, I don’t suffer from it anymore,” says Selena in the Wondermind welcome video. “And I’m really happy and proud of the progress that I’ve made.”

And Wondermind seems to be focused on helping others make progress they are proud of, too.

“Putting it all out there can be hard, but when we share and open up, we actually help each other heal,” the site reads.

Wondermind is set to launch in February 2022. Watch the welcome video below.

If you are a middle schooler or the parent of a middle schooler who is already thinking of scholarships, congratulations! You are already ahead of the curve in planning your or your child’s college education. There are a myriad of other ways to help prepare for college in addition to scholarships.

One of the best things a parent can do to start planning early is start saving money . Oftentimes, a 529 plan is the best way to do this, as it allows your earnings to gain interest before being taxed. Remember, the earlier you start, the better!

Many states are also beginning to offer savings accounts that allow parents to buy college courses for their children starting at a young age. Programs like the Texas Tuition Promise Fund allow parents to lock in current college prices and avoid paying higher prices in the future.

It’s also a good idea to do some thinking about where your child may thrive in high school. You may consider charter , Montessori , and Parochial schools as options. It’s a good idea to do some reflecting and decide which would be the best fit for your child.

And remember, education is not limited to the school year! It can be very valuable to investigate some educational summer programs to help a student’s learning to extend beyond the classroom. Our list of the top summer programs for high school students includes some opportunities that middle schoolers can also apply for. This has the added benefit of helping to prepare your middle schooler for high school!
