Congratulations to Fourth-year Geisel School of Medicine Student Adina Harri Who Received an American Medical Association Foundation Scholarship

Awarded to exceptional medical students in their final year of medical school, Adina Harri MED’25 is among 37 students nationwide to receive a scholarship from the Physicians of Tomorrow  program—a longstanding American Medical Association (AMA) Foundation initiative celebrating diversity in education.

Adina Harri MED'25

“It means a lot to me to be recognized amongst colleagues nationally who are committed to health equity, and I think it’s important for students to receive this type of financial support,” Harri says. “I’m grateful to those at Geisel who helped me apply for this—Margot, Michelle, and Dino at the financial aid office, and to Dr. Pinto-Powell and Dr. Pellegrini for their support.”

This scholarship builds on the AMA Foundation’s commitment to advancing medical education and leadership by helping to create an inclusive health care system that reflects the evolving needs of U.S. patient populations.

In addition, funds created by state medical societies and associations expand the AMA Foundation’s impact, allowing for a broader reach and more substantial student support.

In announcing this year’s scholarship recipients, Albert Ray, MD, FAAFP, president of the AMA Foundation Board of Directors, expressed pride in and enthusiasm for the recipients.

“We are thrilled to support these outstanding students as they embark on their medical careers,” Ray says. “Their dedication and passion for medicine is truly inspiring, and we are confident they will make significant contributions to the field of medicine and the nation’s health.”

The competitive application process considered academic achievements, financial need, community involvement, and a demonstrated commitment to equity in medicine.

Dedicating your thesis

I am writing mine and getting ready to defend. I read almost everyone dedicating their thesis to their loved ones. I don't know if this makes me a sociopath, but I don't feel like doing that. I know that my parents are very proud of me for achieving this and have supported me. But they have no idea what I went through and what it takes.

And apart from that feel no connection strong enough to any particular person to put their name on my thesis.

How formal should the dedication section in a master thesis be? [closed]

I want to make a little practical joke in the dedication of my master thesis. It's nothing extraordinary, and it's harmless, but it is all but formal.

I searched around and found this answer that states, as I already thought, that the acknowledgements section is not so formal and I can write it the way I want, but in terms of the dedication, it doesn't state anything.

Will the academia receive it well if I make this little practical joke in the dedication page, or should I write something a little more formal?

  • 3 This is a question for your advisor. The answer can differ greatly in time and place. In some places it might be seen as very rude, in others, no problem. Ask. –  Buffy Commented Sep 28, 2018 at 16:20
  • I see. I will ask my advisor what is her opinion in this matter. Thank you very much! –  undisp Commented Sep 28, 2018 at 16:33
  • I second @Buffy. I'd like to add that some restrictions may appear not obvious to the candidate himself, but pretty transparent or familiar to the advisor. For example, I was once strongly discouraged to use a certain (more "modern") LaTeX template in my PhD thesis. Don't ask me why, I've changed universities since and I am pretty sure it'd be Ok in my new place. –  Oleg Lobachev Commented Sep 28, 2018 at 20:33

You could wander to your department library and check the dedication page of several master's theses to see what other students have done.

In my case the department keeps a copy of every MSc and PhD thesis ever produced by students in the department, and they are available in the department library. I looked at a couple dozen. Most of them had some happy little thing like a line of poetry or something. A student who finished during my course work put the following on his dedication page.

One and One make Three

That's because he and his wife had a child during his grad work. On my PhD thesis dedication page I first gave a gushy thanks to my supervisor. Then I included a quote from Yoda, and a quote from a song by the music group Queen.

I think as long as it's generally not nasty it will be OK.

You can also get some general ideas about format, writing style, citations, etc. Maybe the people who did the binding will have left little notes in the cover so you can find out where to get that done.

And, hey, the content might even be interesting.

  • This is probably fine in some places, like most places in the US, but others are very formal. If you find lighthearted stuff then you are likely ok. But if you don't...? So, don't make assumptions. Ask for guidance. Even in a permissive place, an individual advisor might object. –  Buffy Commented Sep 28, 2018 at 18:24
  • (Unfortunately) I think @Buffy is right on this one. I would like to think that every jury is as permissive as one can be and wouldn't mind about a little practical joke on a personal section like the dedication page, but it isn't always that way. Even though I don't think that there will be any problem with what I want to do, I will ask the opinion of my advisor, just to make sure. –  undisp Commented Sep 28, 2018 at 19:07
  • 1 Upvote for looking at predecessors. I did exactly that in my MSc thesis and have even nailed some things that appeared natural to me then, but were quite field-dependent in the hindsight. –  Oleg Lobachev Commented Sep 28, 2018 at 20:34
  • Wow, Buffy and undisp. I'm sorry you understood "look at previous work" to be "do what I did and don't pay the least attention to what you find in your department's library." Good thing I didn't tell the story about "if you get this far I owe you a beer." –  user94256 Commented Sep 28, 2018 at 20:42

LaTeX scientific standards for thesis epigraph and dedication

I am a bit of noob with LaTeX, but I am enjoying learning it while I am doing my master thesis here. I've been wondering what would be the best scientific standards and LaTeX formats for dedications and epigraphs, since I wanna have those on my thesis.

Should it come before or after the abstract? Blank pages in between? I don't know much myself. Also, what are the best formats/packages for each one?

I wanted to make a nice simple dedication to my brother that passed away. I tried a new chapter, but it looked kinda lame... Can anyone suggest something? Also, is the sentence I used the most proper for such case? I am not native english speaker, so I can't be sure.

For the epigraph, I am using the epigraph package and forcing the epigraph to the bottom of a blank page, but I am still not 100% sure this looks good. Any suggestions?

Here's how my document starts:

So? Any feedback? I would be so thankful, this is very important for me.

Kind regards,

  • Welcome to the site! And to LaTeX :) A lot of this question is really about style and not really about TeX-LaTeX at all. On those points, you should really talk to your adviser, have a look at what's common in your field - that sort of thing. It's not really what we do here, and it's very opinion based too. We can't really tell you what your document should look like (although we delve into that occasionally, usually if you ask us to do something that's normally discouraged) just how to make it look a certain way –  Au101 Commented Nov 18, 2016 at 17:47
  • Would it be possible to edit this question down so that just the TeX specific questions are left? (It would ideally be better to ask separate questions separately too. This is one of the ways Stackexchange is weird. We don't really open up threads in which to talk about all of your problems, instead we have Q & As, so each question should be its own question with its own answers underneath) –  Au101 Commented Nov 18, 2016 at 17:48
  • I'm sorry about your brother. My condolences –  Au101 Commented Nov 18, 2016 at 17:49
  • AFAIK, there are no scientific standards when it comes to dedication pages. usually they are used to express gratitude to a professor or to one's parents and family, etc. In Memoriam pages can be included as well, sometimes half-titles are used for these sort of pages. Or you could add additional pages after the title page. How you wish to express your gratitude is up to you, same goes for 'memorial pages'. As for the epigraph: Do you mean 'epitaph'? because AFAIK, an epigraph is something mathematical. Also, my condolences, I know how you feel, my kid brother died recently, too. –  naphaneal Commented Nov 18, 2016 at 18:49

The template seems to come from Github and it is not good. A few comments added.

As there is no license given, it should not be used. There are other/better templates available.
