Fashion is when people decide that certain styles of clothes are popular. These styles can change very fast. What is fashionable one year might not be the next. Some people like to follow the latest fashion and wear new styles. Other people don’t care about fashion and just wear what they like or what is comfortable.

Caring for clothes.

Taking care of our clothes is important. It means they will last longer and we won’t have to buy new ones so often. We can look after our clothes by washing and drying them the right way. Reading the labels on our clothes can tell us how to do this. Fixing clothes when they get a little tear or a button comes off can also help them last longer.

Clothes are a big part of our lives. They keep us safe from the weather, show who we are, and can be a fun way to express ourselves. We should think about how they are made and how we can take care of them so they last a long time. By doing this, we can help the environment and save money too. Clothes are not just things we wear. They tell a story about who we are and the world we live in.

Now, companies like Louis Vuitton and Tommy Hilfiger can fabricate identical items of clothing to be shipped globally at affordable prices, forcing many local businesses into bankruptcy.

For example, in many parts of Asia, there are the rich cultural traditions of various ethnic minorities. These skilled garment-makers follow traditions dating back hundreds of years. However, these days few local residents are interested as they prefer wealthy western fashion brands that showcase their social status. There are more people who prefer fashion clothes instead of normal outfits. In my opinion, it is a positive tendency. It implies that people can do what they like, and it also improves the clothing industry.

This situation shows that people have the capacity to buy the clothes they want. Nowadays, society is developing fast, which leads to more wages and a better life for each citizen. With more income, people could spend money on the fashion clothes they like instead of considering how to survive. More than a thousand years ago, people needed to try their best to keep themselves alive. High taxes from the government, weather catastrophes, and wars may all kill people. At that time, the fashion clothes exist only in royal family, and other citizen had to find food for living. But now, people not only have the ability to have a feast, but they can also afford fashion clothes, which shows that people are having better lives.

The tendency of fashion clothes can also have positive influence on the clothing industry. Because the demand for fashion clothes is increasing, more effort is required to produce fashion clothes. For instance, the demand for jeans is rising, which leads to more jeans-producing factories. More factories means more competition. Those factories would develop new techniques to reduce the price of dealing with raw materials. And the lower the price of jeans, the more the market would win. As a result, people can buy fashion clothes at a low price and a mature clothing industry is obtained.

In sum, the popularity of fashion clothes indicates that people have a good life without worrying about the supply of living, which can further lead to an advanced cloth manufature. The aim of having a better life should be advocated.

As the use of technology and western countries taking over has had an upsurge, today’s world is highly westernized. This leading to most countries adapting to the western culture and abandoning their traditions inherited long ago.

Firstly, I believe the leap in technology where social media plays a prime role is a crucial element of westernization. Celebrities and influencers from the western world are taken as role models by many young users. Which further paves the path to the young generation picking suits and jeans over sarees and kimonos as they grow up. Suit and jeans, as they are made to seem much more attractive and pleasant than their own traditional clothing. Furthermore, on most occasions’ individuals bully other individuals when they embrace their traditions. This includes impolite comments on social media accounts, leaving out ones that wear their traditional clothing on a daily routine etc.

The more TV is watched, the more traditions are eradicated. Most movies and TV series are filled with western fashion and ideas. Hence, watching TV being a hobby of many also results in individuals picking western over traditional clothing. Therefore, I firmly assent that we should start including more ethnicities in what we do. For instance, producing movies and TV series accepting other cultures, discouraging bullying when people choose traditional fashion etc.

In conclusion I abide with the fact that fashion westernization does bring a negative development. Cultures and traditions brought down from ancient years simply being eliminated is unacceptable. It also brings around the idea that no one should be accepted unless they follow the normal. Consequently, although there is no problem with suits and jeans, I suppose we should encourage traditional clothing more to bring about a positive improvement.

In recent years it’s been absorbed that in a lot of countries the popularity of traditional cloth is decreasing , and modern cloth is becoming more current. In this essay I will be discussing why this shift is happening and why I think this is a good change.

To begin with, the predominant reason why this is happening is due to the inconvenience of traditional clothing. To be more precise, most traditional clothes are complex and hard to wear. For instance , the japanese traditional clothing for women is the kemono. This outfit is designed in a very complex manner and it takes quite an amount of time to wear. That is why wetran clothing is becoming so trendy because they are simply designed and easily worn and more convenient to people of all ages.

On the other hand , this change has a positive influence in a lot of aspects. There is some negativity in this shift, clothes have always been a reflection of people’s identity, tradition and culture. That is why we see that most youngsters do ot have that deep connection with their culture and this can lead to loss of identity. 

In conclusion , although wearing trendy western clothes has some negativity in it, the convenience of it is overcoming this negativity.

How to Describe Clothing in Writing Without Boring Everybody

If you’re trying to learn how to describe clothing in writing, you’re probably like me:

You’ve only pretended to know what organza is. When you’re shopping for yourself, you know what you like but you don’t know how to describe it. And ninety-nine percent of the clothing descriptions in your first draft are just “jeans.” I get it. Clothing description is something I have to actively choose to create, too. It’s not an aspect of character design that bubbles up naturally from the depths of my creative soul. And as a reader, nothing bores me like an entire paragraph of detailed clothing description.

But I’ve also noticed that artful clothing description does make a character, a setting, and even a moment more engaging. It’s all in the craft.It’s good that you’re here to learn how to describe clothing in writing, because it’s a powerful tool. What your character wears reveals where they come from, how they rank in society, how they want to be perceived, and even how they feel about themselves.

These shallow details help us go pretty deep on character .

The good news is that attire is not only important, it’s also kind of fun when you start digging into it. You find that it’s about more than throwing out fashion terms and listing articles of clothing. It’s about building a life and a world, and that is something you can do.

Let’s talk about how to use clothing description as a storytelling tool, how to dress your character for their personality and setting, and how to make clothes interesting to anyone. Because it actually is possible.

Why Clothing Description Matters

One very important aspect of describing attire well is understanding why you’re describing it in the first place.

What exactly are you trying to communicate about the character, setting, or situation?

The answer to this question gives you a ton of clarity. You suddenly know which details to include, which to leave out, and whether to call it a “blood-red cloak” or a “goji berry wrap.

”Let’s take a look at how clothing description indicates your character’s identity, goals, and culture.

Clothes That Fit Your Character

Those of us who don’t get all jazzed about writing clothing descriptions often fail to consider that a good wardrobe has layers.

I don’t mean camisoles and cardigans. I mean what your character wears provides a clue to how they see themselves, how they want to be seen, and even how others see them.

Clothing description also presents an opportunity to play with different points of view . Maybe your character heads out on the town wearing a “daring leopard print jumpsuit,” only to have their best friend immediately ask where they got the “kitty costume.”

When you use clothing to define who your character is, remember that it can also clarify how they feel about themselves and how they fit into the world around them.

Here are some classic characteristics you can draw out through clothing description.

Conveniently, a lot of high status positions come with outfits or accessories that telegraph a person’s position in the hierarchy. This includes things like a pilot’s uniform, a tiara, or a Pink Ladies jacket.

But status can be communicated in more subtle ways, too. One of the first things I learned when I moved to L.A. is that writers do not dress “professionally” for big meetings in Hollywood. As a friend told me, “Wear jeans and glasses and have a favorite pen. Otherwise they won’t take you seriously as an artist.”

What are the rules of your character’s world? What’s the respected “uniform,” and does your character wear it?

It’s fun to play with power in clothing, because it's a relative concept.

One character might demonstrate their power by showing up to prom in a designer gown. Another might claim power by striding in wearing torn jeans and a tank top.

‍ Both can lose clout simply by the way their peers respond to their wardrobe choices.

Play with the question of presentation and power! It’s a good time.

A band t-shirt. A velvet scrunchie. A pair of starched Wranglers. A vintage polka dot dress with a sweetheart neckline.

I’d be willing to bet each of these items immediately brought to mind a semi-clear character. If you stopped to think about it, you may even notice yourself imagining things as specific as age, hobbies, and ambitions.

It really doesn’t take much. We naturally link clothing and identity, which is why wardrobe is such an effective tool for building a vivid character .

This one is simple, right? Give your wealthy character a pair of Louboutins and dress your non-wealthy characters in hand-me-downs.

That works. But it can also be fun to play with the confidence and ease that comes with wealth.

Your trust fund character might be completely confident showing up to a party in board shorts and flip-flops. Meanwhile, the character who works two jobs while going to school full-time might scour the Goodwill rack for a designer tag to help them fit in at the same party.

If I’m wearing lipstick with no plans of going out, one of two things is happening:

I’m in a great mood or I’m feeling like I have zero control over my life and failure is inevitable.

What your character wears can tell us a lot about how they feel or how they want to feel. A self-conscious kid tries to disappear inside their oversized sweatshirt. An anxious college student buys a flower crown in the hopes of feeling young and free at Coachella.

Clothes can betray our greatest joys and our deepest insecurities. So have fun with that.

Clothes That Fit Your Character’s Goals

As I write this, I am wearing jeans that are too big, a gray t-shirt I inherited from a former roommate, and a pilled hoodie from a lighting vendor that works with my friend’s husband’s company.

Given that I am writing alone in my apartment, you might rightfully conclude that my goal is to be comfortable.

But put me in a job interview wearing the same outfit, and you’d probably start making new guesses about my intentions. Am I trying to blow the interview? Impress someone with my indifference? Slog through another meaningless day in a world where nothing matters?

Or is comfort just that important to me?

Clothing tells your reader a lot about your character’s goals and motivations within a given scenario.

Which of these clothing types is your character most likely to reach for when starting their day?

Sturdy Clothes

This includes items like steel-toed boots, heavy denim, or tech-forward, snag-resistant superhero spandex.

If sturdy is a top consideration, your character might be expecting trouble or adventure. Maybe a bit of both. They’re probably less concerned with how they look (unless they want to look intimidating) and more concerned with things like survival or victory.

Attractive Clothes

Is your character trying to attract positive attention? Then this is their category.

Maybe they’re hoping to impress the cool kids or please their parents. Maybe their goal is to entice a mate. Or it could be that they want to be charmed by their own image when they look in the mirror. Either way, their goal is to be desirable, whatever “desirable” means in this situation.

Details about fit, cut, and material go a long way when describing the clothing of a character who longs to attract. Non-visual senses are big, too. Think touchable fabrics and the light scent of lavender soap.

Comfortable Clothes

Maybe your character is snuggled up in their fleece pajamas while the blizzard rages outside. Or they could be frantically running errands in leggings and a t-shirt.

Whether it’s a matter of indulgence or survival, feeling good is a deeply relatable goal. Help your readers feel the relaxed, organic cotton or the memory foam slipper, and they’ll feel your character’s priorities deep in their own souls.

Stealthy Clothes

This is a fun one. Does your character need to hide? Sneak around? Blend in?

Stealthy clothes bring to mind burglars clad in black outfits and soft-soled sneakers. But the definition of “sneaky” depends on your character’s situation.

Do they need a ghillie suit to blend into the natural environment? Or are you writing a spy character who dons Lululemon to infiltrate an upscale yoga studio?

Protective Clothes

Is your central conflict a life-or-death situation? Odds are, you’ve got a character who dresses to stay alive. Think armor, bulletproof vests, and bandoliers.

Your character might also have a job or hobby that requires protective clothing. Whether it’s a beekeeping suit, climbing helmet, knee pads, or sun-protective fabric, what your character wears provides a clue about what’s at stake in the coming scene.

Clothes That Fit Your Character’s World

The first time I joined my family for our biannual Minnesota fishing trip after moving to L.A. from the Midwest, I found myself constantly losing my aunt and mother.

Every time we got separated in a public space, I discovered myself in a sea of mature women with the same haircut and pastel tops. I never thought of there being a uniform for Midwestern ladyness. It took leaving the Midwest to recognize it.

But that’s the case wherever you go. Our wardrobes are influenced by our age, geography, culture, hobbies, and a million other aspects of our worlds.

Even the non-conformists are influenced by societal norms. The surrounding culture dictates what they can’t wear if they want to be seen as free-thinking individuals. (Huh.)

All this to say: there is substantial storytelling power in a coral “Life is Good” t-shirt.

Here’s how to describe clothing in writing to show your readers the world to which your character belongs…

…or the world they’re desperately resisting.

Clothing is one of the easiest and most immediate ways to establish an historical setting. If your protagonist is donning a tri-cornered hat, loosening a corset, or strutting through town in a new toga, your reader has a good sense of time period.

Or at least they know what century they’re in.

Now, if you write historical fiction, it’s important to research the clothing of your chosen era. More on that in a bit.

Clothing reflects the resources available in a specific time and place. When describing clothing in writing, consider:

• The time period of your story. (Has denim been invented yet?)
• The geographical location of your story. (Would people living in this area have access to leather goods?)
• Your character and community’s financial resources. (Where do they buy their clothes? How long do they need their clothes to last?)

You can also use this aspect of clothing description to paint a vivid picture of the world you imagined. Would the fashion designers in your fantasy novel make use of dragon scales? Are the characters of your dystopian novel forced to make do with burlap and mud?

Where does your story take place?

The answer can guide you towards certain fashion trends to inspire your character’s wardrobe. The geographical setting might suggest that your characters are expected to abide by strict rules for modesty or are celebrated for being wild and free.

And of course, location provides a clue for what it takes to be comfortable in the world of your story. If your character comes home and immediately sheds three layers of down and fleece, I’m going to assume they’re not in San Antonio, Texas.

Do your characters care deeply about looking respectable, or are they more afraid of putting on airs? What matters more to them: fashion or function? Do they strive to be humble before their god or do they want to spend this one and only life as their bold, ostentatious selves?

What is the prevailing value in the society of your story? Do all your characters embrace it? Who's your rebel, and how does their clothing reflect their defiant spirit?

How to Describe Clothing in Writing Without Dragging Down the Story

Hopefully, you now have more wardrobe ideas for your characters than just “red shirt, blue pants.” But what about the process of actually sharing these details in your novel ?

Let’s talk about how to describe clothing in writing organically . Like all forms of exposition, your goal is to deliver this information without pulling the reader out of the story. We’re trying to avoid, “Isabell gazed out the window, and by the way, she was wearing a white terry cloth robe.”

Here’s how it’s done.

Focus on Building the Scene and Character

First and foremost, remember that clothing description is still storytelling. You’re not infodumping. You’re working essential details into the narrative at the moment when they are most relevant.

It’s okay if Todd’s checks his designer watch three pages after you mention his silk tie. The reader does not need the full outfit in one go.

Also bear in mind that not all clothing descriptions have to be presented as “She put on x” or “He was wearing y.” You can draw your reader’s attention to an item of clothing by having your character draw on their jeans or fiddle with their collar.

Characters can also comment on or react to one another’s clothing, as long as the exchange reveals something about the world or relationship.

Don’t Show Everything

Our imaginations can do a surprising amount with just a few key details. If you tell your readers about Nanette’s light pink cardigan and string of pearls, you don’t have to say much about the shoes and skirt and silk blouse. They’ll see it automatically.

Select the most striking details and move on.

Use the Senses

One reason clothing descriptions can start to feel like a tedious laundry list (see what I did there?) is because we get stuck on what things look like. But there is so much more to the experience of clothing than that.

Tell us how the wool of your protagonist’s sheath dress scratches the skin on the underside of her arm. Mention the familiar swooshing of the neighbor’s tracksuit as he runs by the house every morning or how the aunt’s jacket always smells like cold air and pine needles.

Fabric, Fit, Quality, Color

If you’re good at talking clothes, you can sit this one out. But for writers like me who get stuck in the “white socks, green dress” rut, here’s a quick reminder:

Details about fabric, fit, quality, and color are super effective when it comes to creating a sense of character, place, or moment.

Baggy jeans. A scarlet pantsuit. A four-layer, bubble-gum pink taffeta skirt. The only cloak in the world made with silk spun by the cat-sized spiders that live in the forbidden mountains.

These images all go a lot further than “white socks, green dress,” and most of them don’t require a lot of extra words.

Make It Significant

Consider whether your character’s attire might serve as a symbol, highlight a theme, or represent a conflict .

Maybe they’re wearing an article of clothing that once belonged to someone they’ve lost. Or they’ll be living off soda crackers and peanut butter for the next week because they drained their checking account for a suit to impress at their job interview.

Let the Clothing Tell a Story

Really, the topic of this article is not how to describe clothing in writing as much as it is how to tell a story with clothes. Because like all other character details, it’s not enough to paint a picture. The image you create has to play a role in the narrative.Consider the character arc . Who is your character at the beginning of the story, and how can you dress them to establish their “normal”? How do they change, and how does their clothing reflect that change?

Be specific and accurate. In other words, research.

If you write historical fiction, you’re probably way ahead of me. You’re already obsessing over hat styles and what the undergarment situation was at the time of your story. Not to pile on, but don’t forget to make sure you know which materials were—and weren’t—available in the world of your novel.

And if you don’t write historical fiction? You’re still not off the hook. Make sure you know what’s hot and what’s not in your specific setting, as well as what specific words the locals would use. Are they overalls or coveralls? Sweaters or jumpers?

Get it right, and you transport your readers to a vivid world.

Dabble with Depth

If there is one thing I hope you take from all of this, it’s that none of this is about describing what a character looks like. Not really.

Sure, it helps your reader to know how you picture a character. It makes for a more entertaining read. But your reader is going to picture something whether you guide them or not. The reason we fuss over physical descriptions is not because it’s so important that the reader’s imagination gets it right.

It’s because concrete details are incredibly effective in communicating abstract concepts. In writing, the clothes kind of do make the (hu)man. Fashion photographer Bill Cunningham said, “Fashion is the armor to survive the reality of everyday life.” Try applying this philosophy to clothing descriptions in your writing and see what happens.

What does your character wear to feel safer in their world or in their own skin? How does their attire reflect what they want, what they fear, or where they’re going?

History of Fashion

Fashion is all about the history of people. For thousands of years, people have loved fashionable clothing. Clothes, from the early days of Egypt, have become our expression. Over time, the form of the dresses transferred from voluminous dresses into soft, frequent, high-waisted skirts.

Women’s skirts were shorter and thinner at the beginning of the century. Trousers of men slowly went from ankle to knee-length. During the World Wars, women’s style transformed into shorter skirts below the knee.

The ‘80s brought significant trends related to fashion and hairstyles for both genders. The transitional fashion period is from the sixties and seventies. During this time, women wearing trousers became acceptable.

From the 20th century to the 21st century, fashion change continued, and still today, it is evolving.

When we talk about influencing fashion, political influencers play a vital role. There are a lot of instances where politicians become fashion symbols, like Princess Diana and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. Political revolutions also left a significant impact on fashion trends.

Technology is another significant factor that influences fashion. The fashion industry saw rapid growth in technology such as 3D printing technology, wearable technology, etc. The Internet also affects fashion trends.

Knowing your taste in fashion enables you to discover more about yourself. We all want to express ourselves through the clothing we wear, but it can be  really hard to figure out what kinds of clothing you actually like! Today, I’m going over the 42+ most popular types of fashion styles.

One huge benefit of learning about fashion styles is that shopping is  much easier once you know what you want. Knowing your style keeps you from impulsively purchasing discounted pieces of clothing or getting something you won’t  actually wear.

When you know your fashion style, you’ll have an easier time buying clothing and planning outfits. You’ll instinctively know what suits you and how you want to dress for various occasions.

How To Mix & Match Types Of Fashion Styles:

Obviously, most of us don’t wear only  one type of fashion style. If you’re like me, then you lean towards a few specific fashion styles, but you also like to mix and match.

There are certain styles that go better together. For example, NYC fashion and edgy fashion styles go well with minimalist, while boho-chic and romantic styles tend to go well together. You can mix Victorian with minimalist, biker, goth, edgy, or many other fashion styles on this list.

If you’re just starting out on your style journey, then I recommend that you figure out whose style you like on social media. Think about not only what looks good on the influencer, but what would look good on  you and what you  actually see yourself wearing in everyday life.

Your style should be reflective of who you are, but it should  also be practical. For example, because I live in New England, I tend to focus a lot of city chic/edgy fashion during the winter with a hint of minimalism. It just wouldn’t make sense for me to dress  only in island style!

Fashion really is an art, and over time (and with a lot of practice), you’ll get comfortable mixing and matching fashion styles. The first step is to learn about the various types of fashion styles. Once you can define what makes each type of fashion style unique, you can start to blend them.

42. Goth Fashion

Goth fashion originated in the 18th-century era. The style features dark, mysterious, and conspicuous details that resemble the desire of our late ancestors to question tradition and resist conformity. Basically, it’s all about being edgy and different.

Goth fashion is also tied with witchcraft and magic – which is why modern witches love this dark and mysterious get-up.

Under goth fashion, there is also a sub-category called “Glam Goth” which features an artsy, classy, and, avant-garde look compared to the traditional gothic style.

Obviously, you can mix goth style with many other fashion styles. If you want to go full-on goth, then you’ll probably want to lead towards the ’90s goth vibes, but I like to incorporate pieces of other styles, too.

41. Victorian-Inspired Style 

How do you dress like a royal?

The victorian-inspired style was founded during an era when Queen Victoria rose to the throne (in 1837). At a young age, she inspired women of all ages and statuses through her vogue taste in fashion. Her love for velvets, satins, ruffles, silk, and heirloom jewelry did not only last for a few decades, but continues to inspire the fashion industry up until the present.

40. Cottagecore

One of the newer types of fashion styles, cottagecore started as a movement to promote rural living, simple farm life, and local artisan products. The rule that Modest Style follows is this: being covered doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style. Higher necklines and longer sleeves are not boring or bland at all.

If you have a reserved and conservative personality, this style may suit you, even if you don’t dress for religious reasons.

24. Minimalist

Minimalist fashion aims for sustainability, timelessness, and versatility. With the dangers of fast fashion beginning to become evident, minimalism became a widespread option for conscious individuals.

Minimalism also gained popularity when Japanese wisdom reached the opposite side of the world. Marie Kondo is one living proof of how this style reached the West and stuck!

However, the minimalist style is one of the fashion styles that really is timeless. It’s worth it to invest in minimalist fashion pieces because they will literally never go out of style.

Minimalism is not necessarily keeping a monochrome wardrobe. It is simply keeping a range of neutral pieces that can be worn repeatedly and avoiding excessive accessories. In a fashion sense, a minimalistic style focuses on functionality and practicality without sacrificing style.

Vintage Vogue brings 20th-century nostalgia to the table. Think 1930’s housewife stereotype – the type that wears sweetheart dresses and a-line skirts while baking a pie in the kitchen.

There may be a lot of negative insights nowadays about the “submissive wife era,” but we cannot deny how dainty, chic, and vibrant fashion was back then. I personally think we can incorporate some of that feminine charm and still be independent!

To score a vintage vogue look, you will need a wardrobe of A-line dresses, high-waisted shorts, and lots of hair scarves. For formal occasions, the best way to style your hair is by teasing it for a volumized look.

22. NYC Style (American City Chic) 

The streets of New York City are where the [fashion] party happens! NYC is a melting pot of different cultures, personalities, and tastes – but they all have something in common: they love the city. 

NYC style leans on the masculine, edgy side of the meter and locals tend to wear blazers, trousers, and coats. Despite that, this is one of the types of fashion styles that leaves room for your personal and unique twists.

You might see someone in an oversized blazer, two-piece denim, or someone in a bracket (jacket or blazer over a bra). 

NYC style is definitely one of the edgier types of fashion styles, but it’s typically quite monochrome in color. You want to mix in some high-end, luxury pieces with a trendy business style, plus some of the trendiest, current fashion accessories.

Dark Academia is a recently established trend by art school students and literary lovers on Instagram and Tiktok. Influencers in this category line up their feed with pictures of stacked books, splattered coffee, and random journal entry snaps. 

In simpler terms, Dark Academia goes after a goth-like, artsy, Oxford mood. The dress code is also inspired by private school regulations, hence the common appearance of tailored trousers, pleated skirts, cardigans, and blouses in this style.

The Academia style is followed by several subcategories, including Light Academia and Green Academia, which I’ll discuss further in a different section.

“What is popular right now?” Trendy fashion focuses on anything that is hot on social media, particularly Tiktok and Instagram.

To maintain this style, however, you must be open to constantly change your wardrobe along with the fast movement of trends. 

Trendy fashion is not simply wearing clothes that are popular. You must also have a foundation in styling and combining pieces. The last thing you want to look like is a melting pot of everything trendy. Overdoing this style is a recipe for c-r-i-n-g-e. 

I like to put  some trendy pieces with more classic, minimalist pieces to create a cohesive wardrobe. This is definitely one of the types of fashion styles that you want to mix and match.

If you’re into trendy style, I recommend that you follow some up-and-coming boutiques (Grey Bandit, Princess Polly, etc.) on Instagram in order to keep up with the trends.

On the opposite side of the trend scale, the Edgy street style conveys a unique form of fashion centered on self-expression and revolution. Somehow, edgy street style is like goth but with modern and straightforward elements. 

Edgy street style challenges gender-based dressing and subtleness. If you want to flaunt an edgier flair, you must also consider how you bring yourself no matter what you wear. Keep your chin up and your head high. 

Sometimes, edgy style almost has an NYC style vibe, but it tends to be a little  more trendy and is more commonly found in European cities.

Because hip-hop was the rising star in the music industry in the 90s, the genre also influenced fashion with its love for baggy pants and loose silhouettes.

The 90s was also a time when people loved maximalism. This means that the more accessories you have, the better. Think scrunchies, big hoop earrings, butterfly clips, and chokers. Incorporating athleisure wear with a tint of hip hop can also give you an effortless aura for lounge-y days.

The Types of Clothing Style in Modern Society

Introduction.

Details are very important, especially when it concerns the clothing style of the particular person. The human character can be easily explained by observation and analysis of what one wears. Such characteristics as color and shape are important, however, the overall image must be evaluated holistically. Clothing style can tell much about cultural affiliation, socioeconomic status, emotions, and character of the person.

Different types of clothes can identify the ethnic or professional culture one belongs to. Many peoples have their traditional costumes that express characteristic features of their nationalities. For instance, if one wears a sombrero, it is easy to guess that this person comes most likely from Mexico. In case one wears a saree, then he or she is from India, while a long white shirt disease indicates a citizen of the UAE. The same goes for the professional culture, where a specific uniform is associated with a particular occupation. For example, nurses tend to wear white or green costumes of loose fit, firemen usually have suits and protective accessories of red color, chefs in restaurants have typical white caps, builders obligatory take orange helmets.

Furthermore, clothing is tightly associated with socioeconomic status and income. Experts and professionals can easily differentiate cheap and expensive fabrics, the quality of apparel, and its fittings. If one is wearing garments that look untidy with uneven seams that are most likely signifying that a person cannot afford to buy quality clothes because of socioeconomic status. Meanwhile, people who wear very expensive clothes can be easily recognized as well. Luxury and elite brands serve as status indicators associated with income levels, preferences, and even lifestyles. In some cases, people are not willing to accentuate their status and prefer simple clothing instead.

The color of garments can also explain much about people who wear them. As a rule, men prefer neutral or dark colors, while women usually like brighter clothes, especially during warm seasons. While black, grey, and white colors are considered neutral, some people prefer those because they do not want to stand out from the crowd. Such colors are also preferred in business and office suits because they do not cause many emotions.

On the contrary, bright colors tend to influence everyone around, including the person itself. People who prefer red clothes are characterized as rather emotional and strong, affecting others with energy, passion, or anger. Those who like yellow are usually cheerful and happy; green color signifies love towards nature, while the shadows of brown identify personal stability and reliability with the hints of conservatism.

Holistic analysis of the image and garments determine the character and temperament of a person. While the color of apparel may vary depending on mood or weather, clothing style remains constant. For instance, if one wears a business suit, watch, glasses, complemented by perfect hairdo and overall neatness, this makes consider that a person is disciplined and responsible. When one prefers a chaotic but stylish combination of clothes, then this person is probably very creative. Meanwhile, untidy image and inattentiveness to details may signify a lack of self-confidence or irresponsibility. The overall image is also complemented by the way people behave and communicate. All those factors indicate personal character and temperament.

People usually choose things that correlate with their preferences, behaviors, world outlook, and lifestyles. Clothing is a powerful tool of self-expression that allows converting the inner feelings into the exterior appearance. Thus, garments can identify socioeconomic status, profession, culture, emotions, and even temperament. A thorough analysis of one’s clothes can say much about the particular person.

• A pear shaped body:This body type is blessed with beautiful shoulders so highlight them using necklaces or scarfs. Avoid tight bottoms, go for A- line dresses or flared pants.For the bottoms use dark colors for color blocking with bright tops.
• An Apple shaped body: Your bust is a virtue for you try enhances that wear belts on bust on waist as that will create more curves. Don’t wear tight tops, wear which are layered, or ruffled. Avoid putting on double breasts jackets. Skinny pants or straight pants are a big NO!, try flared or loose palazzo or pants. Wear prints. A rectangular body shapeIf your body don’t have natural curves, create them with your clothes. Wear belts on waist to highlight them, tops, peplum jackets, skirts and dresses will create the illusion of an hourglass shape.

Over the past century, different clothing styles and techniques of designing clothes have emerged and have helped shape the way society views clothing. In the past, there were not many options as to which clothes to wear because of the lack of efficiency when developing them. Up until the Civil War era, many people were stuck having to wear clothes that didn't fit because custom made clothes were only accessible to the wealthy. Tailoring and ready-made clothing has changed the way society perceives clothing and has shined light upon new opportunities for people to express themselves at an affordable price. These new ways of developing and sizing clothing are drastically changing for the better and are the beginning of something much bigger.

           Ready-made clothing has played a big role in the mass-production of affordable clothing. Although some might see ready-made clothing as a sign of loss of individuality, many see it as modern and fashionable. The National Institute of Standards of Technology "Ready-Made Clothing" article states, "A tailor might take two dozen measurements when making a man's suit." Many people have found that although custom clothing is no longer as common as it used to be, it is still much more accurate and fits better, that is if you are willing to pay the higher price for it. Modern culture has been dominated by ready-made clothing because of trending styles and the desire to wear popular name-brand clothing. This new way of developing clothing is more efficient than any other method ever seen before and has definitely had an enormous impact on society.

               New clothing styles are constantly emerging and with social media playing such a big role in modern-day society, trends spread like wildfire. In this day and age, the only way the clothing industry can survive is by mass-producing products that are popular in modern culture. There is little to no room for any other method of clothing design in today's society because of the way modern culture is set up. Price range no longer plays a big factor in the way clothing is manufactured because of people's desire for name-brand clothing and styles that are popular. Because of this method, it is only a matter of time before custom made clothing is off the radar for good.

           In essence, tailoring and ready-made clothing has changed the way society perceives clothing and has shined light upon new opportunities for people to express themselves at an affordable price. Although custom made clothing may make people seem more of an individual, ready-made clothing is more practical and is overall more efficient. With these new ways of developing clothing, custom made clothing is no longer practical and will soon be gone.

The world of fashion is something that has tremendously evolved through the decades. There has especially been a huge growth in the study field of fashion. Two of the most in demand careers are fashion merchandise and fashion design and although both careers deal with the same subject and have some similarities, they also have many differences. Both occupations have a common background with some minor changes in detail; they also differ in career choices offered by the industry, and most importantly each profession requires a different degree.

Fashion merchandise is defined as the point where fashion and business meet. Fashion merchandising involves marketing fashions to various retail stores, boutiques, and wholesalers. The mission of a fashion merchandiser consists of connecting different fashions to consumers and anticipating what your clients will be interested in. Fashion merchandise does not center on fashion alone; it requires a devoted business sense and comprehension of assorted marketing strategies and techniques.

On the other hand fashion design is defined as the art of the application of design and aesthetics or natural beauty to clothing and accessories. Fashion design is influenced by cultural and social freedom, and has varied over time and place. Fashion designers work in a number of ways in designing clothing and accessories. Some work alone or as part of a team. They must consider who is likely to wear a garment and the situations in which it will be worn.

They work with different materials such as; pattern, color, texture, and diverse styles. Although both professions deal with the fashion industry one is more inclined to business and the other is more inclined to art. It is not necessary to be really artistic and creative to be a fashion merchandiser; however it is necessary to be artistic to be a fashion designer. The amount of careers in the field of fashion has grown immensely within the last few decades and the demand for more designers and merchandisers is astonishing.

While many workers were losing their jobs due to the recession, it seemed as if the fashion industry did not get impacted by this very much. Fashion merchandising has a vast amount of careers one could generalize in while design only focuses on one. Some of the careers merchandise offers is: management, buyer, seller, visual, trends, display, store owner, and the list goes on. On the other hand designing deals with the design of the garments or accessories.

Although, you can divide it in specific fields such as: drawing, sewing, construction, course design, etc. hey all lead to the same destination, and that is designing the product. However, when you study merchandise, you get a little taste of all the aspects of the merchandise field and then generalize in one. A big advantage to that is that you are able to change your specific line of work at any time without having to go back to school, for example going from working at a retail store as a buyer to opening your own boutique to writing editorials for a top magazine. Getting a degree is one of the most important steps in pursuing a career.

Whether it is for design or for fashion it is standard to get an education and a degree in order to reach your goal. Although both professions require a 2-year or 4-year degree they are not going to be the same degree. When studying design the courses required are hands on, sewing, drawing, textile, fabric, fashion trends, etc. Unlike design, merchandise is more inclined to math and business, reading, and writing; however you are still required to take many of the design courses.

It is important to know the basics, being fashion, however one takes you to the business side while the other the more artistic side. As explained before these two professions have many similarities especially the most important being that they both deal with fashion. But, once you have decided what occupation you are interested in it is important to see what field that falls into. You cannot be an assistant to a major designer like Karl Lagerfeld if you do not have experience in design nor can you open an accessory store without having experience in merchandise.

The reason for this is simple; if you do not have the experience and knowledge necessary in either then you may not be as successful as expected. When I first started school 5 years ago, I was not aware of the merchandise program and took fashion design for a year, I decided I did not like drawing nor did I like sewing and I changed my major to business until I was informed about merchandise. I wasted a couple years and a lot of money and this is why being aware of the careers and what it takes is so important.
