1. Early life

Born on December 20, 1968, Ogalla hails from Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State.

In June I987, he obtained his West African School Certificate from the Nigerian Military School (NMS) Zaria, where he emerged the Best Boy in Sciences.

He attended the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), where he bagged his first degree in Mathematics and was given the Sword of Honour as the best naval cadet in his course.

2. Naval courses

In May 2000, he completed his STC NNS QUORRA, Basic Hydrography, at the National Hydrographic School in India .

He also participated in and completed the Junior and Senior Staff Courses at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College (AFCSC) Jaji.

Ogalla was a participant in the NDC Course 22 and was awarded FDC, as he holds a Master's in strategic studies program from the University of Ibadan.

3. Rising through the ranks/operations

As a senior officer in the Nigerian Navy, he was on board as a ship crew member for NNS AMBE, ARADU, LANA, EKUN, AGU, QUORRA, BEECROFT, DELTA , and PATHFINDER.

In those times, he participated in operations in several countries, including his first operation in Liberia in 1996.

Also, as the base operations officer in NNS PATHFINDER, he was responsible for coordinating anti-illegal bunkering operations and the entire policing duties of the base.

4. Achievements

During his time as a base operation officer in NNS PATHFINDER, there was a reduction in crime and illegal activities.

While also serving as an instructor in the NNHS, he taught geodesy, datum conversion, tidal predictions and analysis, satellite surveying, and bathymetry for six years.

He was also instrumental in the review of the School’s curriculum to align with IHO requirements.

According to Leadership, he is decorated with FSS, MSS, DSS, and GSS. He is a member of the Nigerian Hydrographic Society, the Nigerian Institute of Management, the International Earth Rotation Services, and a fellow of the UK Occupational Safety and Health Association.

5. Personal life/family

He is married to Ijeoma Ogalla, and the marriage is blessed with two children.

His hobbies include jogging, reading, listening, and researching about science and nature.

Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu sacked the police boss, Usman Alkali Baba, and replaced him with Deputy Inspector-General of Police , Kayode Egbetokun.

Tinubu also approved the retirement of all service chiefs, advisers, and Comptroller-General of Customs, as well as their replacements, with immediate effect on Monday, June 19.

Egbetokun lectured Mathematics briefly at Yaba College of Technology, Lagos , before his enlistment into the police.

On Monday, Rear Admiral Ikechukwu Ogalla was appointed the new Chief of Naval Staff.

Ogalla’s appointment came following the removal of Service Chiefs by President Bola Tinubu on Monday.

He replaces Rear Admiral Awwal Gambo, who was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari in January 2021.

Here are some things you need to know about the new Chief of Naval Staff.

1. Ogalla was born on December 20, 1968, in Enugu Ezike, Igbo Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State.

2. He is a member of the 39 RC NDA, graduated with a BSc in Mathematics and was awarded the Sword of Honour as the best naval cadet in his course.

3. Ogalla was commissioned S Lt on September 16, 1992, and rose to the rank of R Adm wef on September 16, 21.

4. The senior officer completed the STC NNS QUORRA, Basic Hydrography National Hydrographic School India in May 2000, and Junior and Senior Staff Courses AFCSC Jaji on November 1 and July 6, respectively.

5. He participated in NDC Course 22 and was awarded fdc on August 14.

PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu, today, appointed Rear Admiral Ikechukwu Ogalla as the new Chief of Naval Staff.

Ogalla replaces Rear Admiral Awwal Gambo, who was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari in January 2021.

Rear Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla was born on December 20, 1968 in Enugu Ezike, Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State. He obtained the West African School Certificate from the NMS Zaria in June, 1987 where he graduated as the ‘Best Boy’ in Sciences.

He is a member of the 39 RC NDA, graduated with a BSc in Mathematics and was awarded Sword of Honour as the best naval cadet in his course.

He was commissioned S Lt on September 16, 1992 and rose to the rank of R Adm wef on September 16, 21. He completed the STC NNS QUORRA, Basic Hydrography National Hydrographic School India in May 2000, Junior and Senior Staff Courses AFCSC Jaji in Nov 01 and Jul 06 respectively. He was a participant of NDC Course 22 and was awarded fdc in Aug 14. As part of the Course, he took part in the MSc Strategic Studies programme, University of Ibadan from 2014 to 2015.

The senior officer served on board many ships including NNS AMBE, ARADU, LANA, EKUN, AGU, QUORRA, BEECROFT, DELTA and PATHFINDER.

While on board NNS EKUN, he took part in the ECOMOG Operations in Liberia in 1996. Also as the Base operations officer in NNS PATHFINDER, he was responsible for coordinating anti illegal bunkering operations as well the entire policing duties of the base.

During the period there was a remarkable reduction in illegal activities in the maritime area within the base area of operations.

The senior officer also served as Instructor, CI and Comdt NNHS, SO 1 Survey and DD Instruments NNHO, ADCP, DD Hydro and DPR NHQ, as well as DS/ DARAS NDC and D Audit NASS NHQ. He is currently the DLL NHQ.

During his cumulative 6-year tour of duty in NNHS, he taught geodesy, datum conversion, tidal predictions and analysis, satellite surveying, bathymetry, among others.

As Comdt, he linked the School with Teledyn Marines, a reputable OEM in the US, which enabled the NN to procure several survey equipment from the company, leading to improvements in practical training.

He was also instrumental to the review of the School’s curriculum to align with IHO requirements. During his tour of duty in the NNHO, the senior officer was instrumental to the localisation of tidal prediction and analysis.

He participated in the FAO sponsored Guinea Current Large Marine Ecosystem survey in 2004 and provided professional inputs during the survey and production of the NNHO charts.

During his tour of duty at the NDC, he contributed towards the improvement of the College research package and also led the 2018 participants research study tour to China and South Korea.

As DLL he was responsible for collating and analysing previous NN Operations and activities with the objective of drawing lessons necessary for doctrinal and operational improvements.

The Senior officer is decorated with FSS, MSS, DSS and GSS. He is a member of the Nigerian Hydrographic Society, Nigerian Institute of Management, the International Earth Rotation Services and also a fellow of the Occupational Safety and Health Association of the UK.

He is married to Mrs Ijeoma Ogalla and the marriage is blessed with two children.

  • Rear Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla is Nigeria’s new Chief of Naval Staff.
  • He hails from Enugu State in the South-Eastern part of the country and is the first Igbo Chief of Naval Staff in the history of Nigeria.
  • Ogalla has a distinguished career, holding various command appointments and attending courses both domestically and internationally.

On Monday, President Bola Tinubu announced the retirement of all service chiefs, advisers, comptroller general of customs, and their replacements.

According to the press release  issued by the  SGF on June 19, 2023, the president approved the immediate retirement of all service chiefs and the inspector-general of police, advisers, and comptroller-general of customs from service as well as their replacements with immediate effect.

The move was seen as a major shake-up in the security and administrative sectors of the country, as the new president seeks to consolidate his power and implement his agenda.

One name that caught the attention of Nigerians online is Rear Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, the new Chief of Naval Staff. He is a native of Enugu State in the South-Eastern part of the country.

Until his appointment, he was the Director of Lessons Learnt at the Naval Headquarters Department of Policy and Plans.

Ogalla is a regular combatant and has held several command appointments and attended several courses both at home and abroad.

He is married to Mrs Ijeoma Ogalla with 2 children.

His early Life and Career

Ogalla was Born on the 20th of December, 1968, in Enugu Ezike, Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State. He did his secondary schooling at NMS Zaria, completing his West African School Certificate in June 1987 where he graduated as the ‘Best Boy’ in Sciences.

He has completed courses in the Navu including the STC NNS QUORRA, Basic Hydrography National Hydrographic School India in May 2000, Junior and Senior Staff Courses AFCSC Jaji in November 2001 and Jul 2006 respectively and also the NDC Course 22 and was awarded FDC in Aug 2014.

He was also part of the recent reshuffling of officers in the NAVY in 2021 where he was reappointed as Director of Lessons Learnt and formerly Director of Audit, at Naval Headquarters.

Rear Admiral Ogalla is the second Igbo Chief of Naval Staff Nigeria has ever had. This has contributed to the heightened interest in him.

His statutory duty as the Chief Naval Officer is to formulate and execute policies towards the highest attainment of National Security and operational competence of the Nigerian Navy.

Why would this appointment have “caught the attention of Nigerians”?

Is it because he’s the only Ibo appointee out of the 22 listed appointees? Or 1 of the only 2 Ibo appointees out of President Tinubu’s first 33 appointments? Is this President Tinubu’s idea of federal character or a rehash of Buhari’s vindictive “5% v 95%” formula?! Or perhaps there are no meritorious Ibos to be appointed. LMAO!!
