ICC Cricket World Cup 2023: Can the sport finally go global?

As cricket’s marquee event kicks off in India, its ambitions to spread beyond the Commonwealth are on test.

Packed stadiums. Raucous crowds. Hooting vuvuzelas. The stage is set for cricket’s biggest carnival, which kicks off in India on October 5 with 10 nations competing for the World Cup over six weeks.

On the surface, the numbers suggest a global event: With over one billion fans , cricket is among the world’s most popular sports. But almost five centuries after the earliest recorded reference to cricket in southeast England, the sport’s market largely remains limited to a handful of countries, led by India.

The sport spread with the British Empire, with the first international matches played in the second half of the 19th century. Yet, even as cricket has evolved over the years with changes in rules and the introduction of new formats and competitions, it has struggled to expand its reach beyond Commonwealth countries.

India, Australia and England dominate as cricketing powerhouses on the field while also holding significant positions of power off the field in the governance structures of the sport. Apart from the ‘Big Three’, other major cricketing nations include Pakistan, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Bangladesh and Caribbean countries that play together as the West Indies.

And that’s about it.

Football’s governing body FIFA boasts more than 200 member nations. The International Cricket Council (ICC), by contrast, has only 12 full members, with dozens of other nations as associate members.

The 50-over World Cup , for long cricket’s marquee event, has swung between accommodating more teams – a record 16 participated in the 2007 edition – and limiting participation to a select band of top-performing nations, as will be the case this time around.

The next edition, in 2027, will see 14 teams battle it out, but that’s still a much smaller number than the 32 nations that have competed in the football World Cup since 1998. In fact, 48 will feature in the next football World Cup in 2026.

So, can the World Cup fire up interest in cricket beyond countries that already love the sport? Or are shorter formats, like 20-overs-a-side competitions – known as Twenty20 (T20) cricket – the vehicles that can propel support around the world? Does cricket even have a global future?

The short answer: Cricket does have scope to grow, but it is unlikely to become a global phenomenon anytime soon. And more than the 50-over World Cup, it is the three-hour spectacle of T20 cricket that is the way forward, say experts, especially with the emergence of franchise leagues in new markets such as the United States. Women’s cricket can also help improve the sport’s global footprint, while a possible return to the Olympic Games might serve as a boost.

Why has cricket not become global yet?

Unlike football, playing cricket involves high expenditure – be it buying the necessary gear, setting up stadiums or maintaining pitches.

“Cricket has a relatively high barrier to entry compared to most sports, simply due to the level of equipment required to play even a recreational game,” said Matt Roller, assistant editor at the ESPNCricinfo website. “In my view, that is the principal reason that football has long been a global sport: All you need is a ball and any small space.”

But there are other reasons, too, behind cricket’s failure – by and large – to expand beyond its traditional markets, believe some experts.

One key factor? The sport’s roots.

Jamie Alter, a cricket analyst and journalist, said that cricket’s foundations in colonialism mean the very fabric of the sport is tied to Commonwealth countries. “The game is too intrinsic to the cultures of most of these countries, and despite the efforts of the ICC to expand cricket across the globe, it remains a rather limited sport since it relies on too few countries to properly thrive and expand,” Alter said.

Traditionally cricket-loving nations like India, Pakistan and Bangladesh alone constitute a market of nearly two billion people.

“Even more insular is the strength of cricket from a commercial perspective,” he added, referring to the economic clout of India and developed cricket-playing countries like England and Australia. That insularity can blunt any sense of urgency to expand the sport’s reach among administrators.

Still, it isn’t as though the pool of nations that play cricket has remained entirely stagnant.

Though there are records of the British playing cricket in Afghanistan in the 19th century, the sport really took off in the war-torn nation among refugees who played in camps in Pakistan in the past two decades.

Then, in its first-ever 50-over World Cup in 2015, the Afghan side beat Scotland. In 2019, the country received test status – the pinnacle of the sport – and soon defeated two other test nations: Bangladesh and fellow greenhorn, Ireland. Afghan players are now regulars in T20 franchise leagues across the world.

But there is little to suggest that the sport’s bosses have plans in place to replicate Afghanistan’s success. In fact, some experts believe that administrators are wary of upstart teams upsetting major nations with big markets, especially in events like the World Cup.

‘Growing very slowly’

Cricket World Cups have often attracted criticism over their small pool of participating teams. The World Cups are poorly designed – too long and with too few teams – said Tim Wigmore, deputy cricket correspondent for The Daily Telegraph newspaper. The 10-team World Cup in India will have 48 matches spanning 46 days. The 2022 football World Cup in Qatar had 32 teams and yet ran for less than a month.

“Cricket has been incredibly conservative in the number of teams it has allowed in World Cups,” Wigmore, co-author of the book Crickonomics, said.

And the reasons are not entirely innocent, according to him.

In 2007, the 50-overs World Cup had 16 teams. But Ireland defeated Pakistan and Bangladesh beat India, pushing the South Asian nations out of the competition at the group stage. Wigmore believes the number of participating nations was “perversely” reduced in subsequent tournaments “to ensure that sides from bigger markets had more games”.

Like the men’s game, the women’s World Cups also feature very few teams. The first edition of the Women’s World Cup featured seven teams in 1973, and the participation fluctuated over the years, reaching the highest count of 11 in 1997. The latest Women’s World Cup in 2022 featured eight teams and the next edition in 2025 will also have the same count.

“So allowing more teams is long overdue – though this year’s ODI World Cup still only has 10 teams and the number in the women’s World Cups is only growing very slowly,” Wigmore said. ODIs – One Day Internationals – are 50-over-a-side matches between international teams.

Georgie Heath, a cricket commentator and presenter, said that the World Cups also need to be marketed in the right way to attract new fans.

“So much advertising seems to be targeted at those who are already cricket fans and are going to watch or attend games anyway. There needs to be more focus on how they are going to bring in new audiences, players and fans and what the sport offers them,” Heath said.

“Often only being on pay-to-view television is a barrier to expansion, too, and this is something that needs to be addressed as well as some of the extortionate prices often charged for tickets.”

A chaotic ticketing system at the World Cup that’s about to begin has frustrated fans. Ticket prices range from 499 rupees ($6) to 40,000 rupees ($481) on BookMyShow, the official ticketing platform. Rates in the resale market are exorbitant, with the most expensive ticket for the highly-anticipated India vs Pakistan match selling for 25 million rupees ($300,545) on Viagogo, a multinational ticket exchange and ticket resale brand.

Meanwhile, questions over the very survival of the ODI format are mounting.

The future: 20 or 50 overs?

In July, the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) – the custodians of the game’s laws – recommended limiting the number of ODI internationals following the 2027 World Cup. The suggestion comes at a time when the 50-over format is losing its relevance: Longer, five-day test matches remain the priority for traditional fans, while casual viewers have embraced a quicker and glitzier 20-over-a-side format that has spawned multiple franchise leagues.

Cricketers themselves are less convinced that it is time to bid farewell to ODIs.

A report in 2022 by the Federation of International Cricketers’ Association, the global body that represents players, said that 54 percent of cricketers still consider the ODI World Cup as the top trophy to compete for, though the number had reduced significantly from 86 percent in their 2018-19 survey.

“My view is that one-day cricket will be played less and less at the international level, but that the World Cup will remain a pinnacle event that players aspire to be part of,” Roller said. “The general issue for 50-over cricket is that bilateral international cricket is increasingly being squeezed by franchise leagues – and private investors clearly have limited interest in the idea of 50-over leagues, seeing the speed of games as a key component of short-form cricket’s appeal.”

To Roller, the T20 World Cup – held every two years – is a “much clearer vehicle for growth”. With next year’s T20 World Cup set to feature 20 teams, its biggest pool of participants so far, Wigmore, the cricket writer and author, expects the tournament to be a big catalyst for cricket’s growth.

But it won’t be easy. Lower-ranked teams are likely to struggle to remain competitive as they receive a very limited share of central broadcast revenue from the T20 World Cup, Roller pointed out, limiting the resources that they can funnel back into popularising the sport.

“Staging the tournament every two years also risks killing the golden goose: the scarcity of World Cups in other sports helps add to their prestige,” he added.

Other analysts believe the future lies in T20 cricket – not so much in international matches, but in franchise leagues.

‘Building a successful business’

In 2018, ex-ICC CEO David Richardson said that it was “quite clear” that T20 cricket would be the format by which the governing body could “globalise and grow the game worldwide”.

Fast forward to 2023, and the T20 format seems to be flourishing. There are domestic and franchise leagues taking place in Africa, the Americas, Asia, Oceania and some parts of Europe.

The Indian Premier League (IPL), which has an estimated brand value of $8.4bn, has built its status as the world’s top T20 competition since its inception in 2008. Lucrative leagues have also started in Australia, the United Arab Emirates, South Africa, England and Wales, Pakistan, the Caribbean and most recently in the United States.

“T20 cricket has spread the sport, but for cricket to be a sustainable and global game, it’s going to be these leagues that are starting up everywhere, like in the US or UAE,” said Bharat Sundaresan, cricket writer for the Cricbuzz website. “Eventually, we’ll reach a point where if there is a window, new leagues could come up in other nations.

“And that’s personally how I see cricket growing even more in a global sense,” Sundaresan said.

In July, cricket broke into the world’s wealthiest market, the US, with the launch of Major League Cricket , with six teams competing in the T20 format. The MLC assembled an impressive group of investors, with four of its six franchises owned by business entities that also own teams in the IPL.

The US – along with the West Indies – is also scheduled to host the T20 World Cup next year, offering an opportunity for the sport and format to grow there.

“All these IPL franchise owners, whether they have the best interest of the sport in mind or not, the one thing they do know to do is to run a successful business,” Sundaresan said.

“Their business is so dependent on their brand being showcased for a longer period during the year rather than just for two months, which is why they’re buying out all the teams around the world. It’s just going to lead to there being more leagues,” he added.

Sundaresan also tipped women’s cricket as playing a key role in enhancing the sport’s global image. The first full-fledged five-team Women’s Premier League (WPL) earlier this year saw several female cricketers witnessing the biggest payday of their careers at the auction.

Meanwhile, the FairBreak Invitational T20 held its second edition in Hong Kong this year, featuring some of the world’s best female cricketers who took part in the six-team tournament.

“I think women’s cricket will popularise cricket as a sport more globally than what men’s cricket has been able to do in the last 150 years,” Sundaresan said.

He cited the stunning emergence of Thailand – a country with no known history in the sport – as a petri dish of talent in the women’s game. They qualified for their first global event in 2020 when they competed at the Women’s T20 World Cup and the team has been ranked as high as 10th internationally.

Thai players have also grabbed attention in franchise leagues. In 2020, opening batter Natthakan Chantham played for the Trailblazers in the Women’s T20 Challenge competition in India, becoming the first Thai cricketer to play in a professional T20 franchise league. All-rounders Nattaya Boochatham and Sornnarin Tippoch, as well as batter Naruemol Chaiwai, featured in the FairBreak Invitational T20 this year.

“Suddenly, it’s a free-for-all, right?” Sundaresan said. “Like, you can be part of a national team in a country which doesn’t have a great standard of cricket, but you have a tournament to go to and play.”

An Olympic medal next?

The T20 format is also firing bigger ambitions for cricket. The sport’s authorities have bid for cricket to be included in the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028, having last featured at the 1900 Games in Paris.

The proposal: A five-team T20 competition, for both men and women.

But will cricket as an Olympic sport help expand its global reach? Not everyone is sure.

“I’d love to see cricket played at the Olympics for the second time especially as this will then include women playing cricket, too,” Heath, the commentator and presenter, said.

“My reservations here lie in considering how many countries will be included, what the qualification routes are, who plays, and the danger that it just becomes another tournament of the same countries playing out as we always see.”

Other experts agree that while Olympic involvement could give cricket more global visibility, it is unlikely to transform its footprint overnight.

“A small T20 tournament might not be transformative in itself and would likely be played by only a few teams in the first instance,” Roller said.

An Olympic stamp in itself wouldn’t mean that cricket has gone global, Roller said. “There are a number of relatively niche sports at the Olympics already, which are much smaller than cricket in terms of participation numbers or audience.”

Indeed, some analysts wonder whether cricket even needs to aspire for a presence in every part of the world.

“I love cricket and always will, but I don’t see how it going to the Olympics is going to really promote the sport,” Alter said.

“Does cricket need to be a global sport? It’s successful for over 150 years in its own world.”

Men's Cricket World Cup 2023: All you need to know about the 10-team tournament

What is it?

This is the 13th edition of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup, with the competition taking place every four years. The 2023 tournament is being held in India with 10 teams facing off in the 50-over one-day international format.

When is it?

The tournament starts on Thursday, October 5 when England face New Zealand in Ahmedabad. The last match of the group stage is on Sunday, October 12 with the semi-finals taking place on November 15 and 16 before the final is held where the tournament started, in Ahmedabad on Sunday, November 19.

What are the rules?

Each team has 50 overs to bat and bowl, as per a standard ODI match, and the team that scores the most runs win. 

There are also three powerplay phases of the innings during which the number of fielders that can be deployed in the outfield changes.

Powerplay one lasts for the first 10 overs and restricts the fielding team to having only two fielders outside the 30-yard inner circle. Powerplay two covers overs 11-40 in which the fielding team captain can only position a maximum of four fielders outside the inner circle.

Powerplay three is for the last 10 overs where a maximum of five fielders can be outside the inner circle.

Additionally, no bowler can deliver more than 10 overs during the innings. 

If both innings last the full allotted overs, they should last around three and a half hours each with a 30-minute interval between. There will also be two drinks breaks in each session around an hour and 10 minutes apart.

In the event both teams finish on the same score, a super over will be used to separate them. Teams can select any batsmen to take part, even if they have been given out in the match. If both nations are tied after the first super over, a second will follow. They will continue until there is a clear winner.

Who is taking part?

Ten teams are embarking for glory in India.

Eight sides qualified for the tournament through the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League comprising a series of matches between 2020 and 2023 with 13 teams facing off and the top eight qualifying automatically for the World Cup.

The eight teams who progressed were: India (who automatically qualified as hosts), Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, New Zealand, Pakistan and South Africa.

The bottom five teams of the Super League then faced off against the five qualifiers in a 10-team tournament in Zimbabwe to determine the final two entrants. Sri Lanka and the Netherlands prevailed to complete the line-up.

What is the format?

The 10 teams will compete in a single group stage with every team facing each other once. At the end of the group stage, the top four teams will advance to the semi-finals.

During the group stage teams will get two points for a win, and one point for a no result. If there are teams that finish on the same number of points at the end of the group stage, positions will be decided by who has the better net-run rate (NRR).

In the knock-out stage, the first-place team will face the team in fourth while the second-place team will take on third. The victors of each semi-final will then fight for the trophy in the final on November 19.

What happened last time?

The World Cup finished in dramatic fashion as England won on home soil, defeating New Zealand in the final after a tied super over saw them prevail on boundary countback, a rule that was soon scrapped.

Ben Stokes was England's hero, hitting 84 as they matched New Zealand's score of 241 and he returned for the super over, partnering Jos Buttler as they made 15 runs off Trent Boult. Jofra Archer then held his nerve, with Buttler running out Martin Guptill to secure victory at Lord's.

India topped the group in 2019 before losing out to New Zealand in the semi-final, while England defeated second-placed Australia to advance to the final.

What is the history of the tournament?

The Men's Cricket World Cup has been running for nearly fifty years and is the most storied international white-ball cricket tournament. 

England hosted the first two tournaments in 1975 and 1979, however, it was the West Indies who were the early trailblazers by triumphing on each occasion. The 2023 World will be the first time that the team from the Caribbean will not be present after they failed to make it through the qualifying tournament.

At the turn of the century, Australia displayed their dominance as they claimed the title on three successive occasions between 1999 and 2007. The Baggy Green are the most successful team with five World Cup titles overall.

India, who have won it twice (1983 and 2011), Pakistan (1992) and Sri Lanka (1996) are the other nations to go all the way.

What and who to keep an eye on?

Set in one of the most passionate cricketing countries in the world, a setting full of beauty, colour, and culture, this World Cup will have a vibrant atmosphere. And it promises to be particularly fervent when India play Pakistan on October 14 in a rare meeting between the two sides.

Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium, the largest cricket stadium in the world, will host one of the fiercest rivalries in world sport, let alone cricket, an intense and unmissable match in the group stage.

From Virat Kohli of India, to Australia's Mitchell Starc, England's Ben Stokes and New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson there are superstars at every turn. Meanwhile, the likes of Afghanistan, Netherlands and Bangladesh will be bidding to upset the status quo on the biggest stage.

Viewers in the UK can watch the tournament live on Sky Sports while Channel 5 will be showing highlights throughout the tournament on free-to-air.

Test Match Special will broadcast live commentary of matches throughout via Radio 5 Sports Extra and the BBC Sport website where video highlights can also be found.

Games will be shown live for Australian audiences via Fox Sports while New Zealand viewers will be able to watch on Sky Sports NZ.

In India the matches will be shown on Star Sports and Pakistan fans will be able to watch on PTV and ARY. 

ESPN will be showing the games for cricket fans in the Caribbean while fans in North America will be able to watch via ESPN+ and Willow TV.

ICC Cricket World Cup 2023: India Team Performance Review in the tournament

The stage was set - bigger than ever. Viewership peaked - More than ever. Records were broken - quicker than ever. Yet, the trophy just slipped out of India’s hands as they lost the ODI World Cup final at the hands of Australia by six wickets. 

The Men in Blue were impeccable during the league stage. They were not just winning but decimating opponents and hence, were the favourites to lift the cup and end the 12-year draught. In the end, it was so close, yet so far. Players like Rohit Sharma, Mohammed Siraj, and Virat Kohli were spotted shedding a few tears as they couldn’t have given more than they did throughout the tournament. 

Coming into the World Cup, they were under pressure despite winning the Asia Cup. Playing at home is never easy, as there’s always pressure from the supporters, media and especially, there’s more noise than required. However, from the very first match, the team made the fans believe that they were not going to give anything less than 100%, and the Rohit Sharma-led side maintained the same spirit till the very last game.

They only got better from time to time. Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, and Mohammed Siraj struggled in the initial phase but as time passed, these cricketers gained momentum and proved their worth in the middle. Going into the final, India had no concerns at all and were considered to be the favorites against Australia but the Pat Cummins-led side did what the skipper promised.

Ahead of the summit clash, Cummins in the press conference stated his desire to see more than 1 lakh people go quiet on the final and he eventually made sure that it happens. Gill went back to the pavilion pretty early but Rohit kept playing the way he knows the best. However, he got out on 47 runs, the road seemed difficult as Virat and KL Rahul struggled massively. Virat however kept rotating the strike to release the pressure but the stumper-batter failed to do so and hence, India were completely on the backfoot in the middle overs. They eventually got bundled out for 240 runs, which the Aussies chased down with absolute ease, all thanks to Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne.

Good, bad, and not so pretty

Whatever India touched seemed to have turned into gold in the ODI World Cup 2023 . Shreyas Iyer’s form was a major concern and was thought to be on the verge of getting dropped but ultimately, he finished as the seventh-leading run-scorer of the tournament, with 530 runs in 11 matches. The same happened with Mohammed Siraj. He was having trouble finding rhythm, but towards the end of the league stage, he returned to his best and delivered well.

On the other hand, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were phenomenal, to say the least. The skipper was in charge of setting the tone, and he did it in some style, but Virat once again proved to be the run-machine. Rohit finished as the second-leading run-scorer of the tournament with 597 runs in 11 matches, while Virat broke multiple records, including Sachin Tendukar’s most centuries in ODI cricket and finished on 765 runs after 11 matches, which is the most by a cricketer in the history of World Cup.

KL Rahul rose to the occasion from time to time. In the very first match, he scored 97 runs and helped India beat Australia in Chennai and later, he hit the fastest century by an Indian in ODI World Cup history, scoring a century in just 62 deliveries against Netherlands in Bengaluru. Ravindra Jadeja’s form with the bat was a bit concerning but that was barely required leaving the final, where it mattered but the southpaw couldn’t perform to his potential.

When it comes to the bowlers, Mohammed Shami absolutely stole the show. He didn’t feature in the playing XI in the initial matches, which was extremely surprising but after Hardik Pandya was ruled out with an ankle injury, Shami got back into the squad and picked up 24 wickets in seven matches and ended up as the leading wicket-taker of the tournament. The pacer also picked up a seven-wicket haul against New Zealand in the semi-final, which is remarkable.

The moments that mattered

Winning all nine matches in the league stage is an incredible feat. India were the only undefeated team until the final and that deserves a lot of appreciation. Other than that, there are multiple moments that will forever be edged into the hearts of cricket lovers. Virat scoring his 50th ODI century at Wankhede Stadium and bowing down to Sachin Tendulkar was an iconic celebration that cannot be recreated. 

The medal ceremony is another thing that the fans used to wait for after any India game. All the cricketers used to gather in the dressing room as fielding coach T Dilip used to announce the winner in a unique manner, which the stakeholders of the team absolutely fell in love with. Another thing that they fell in love with was Rohit Sharma’s selfless approach. He took the matter into his own hands and delivered time and again for the team, even when he was nearing a milestone. In a country where milestones are worshipped, Rohit showed that people also love the intent and approach.

Remember the Names

One can pick at least eight players for this category. Almost everyone who got a chance to feature in the playing XI did his best. If not batting, then bowling, if now bowling, then fielding - Indian cricketers were head and shoulders above everyone and they were ready to face any team and take on any challenge that the others offered. That’s what made this team ruthless.

However, three names that cannot be ignored at all are Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Mohammed Shami. These three players were extremely consistent and played a major role in helping India qualify for the finals against Australia.

Future fermentation

Going forward, the team will be built around the likes of Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan, and Shreyas Iyer. KL Rahul and Virat Kohli might still be in the picture for the ODI World Cup 2027, but a lot will depend on their form and how well they are dealing with all three formats.

The good thing about Indian cricket is that the youngsters already have enough exposure by playing in the Indian Premier League . Plus, there are A tours and on occasions, when the senior team doesn’t travel, the juniors get game time. That’s a massive positive. Players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Prasidh Krishna, and a few others have already played international cricket and hence, they know their jobs very well.

Coming of age

Shubman Gill in his very first ODI World Cup scored 354 runs in nine matches. There were a lot of expectations from him but he couldn’t deliver. Yet, scoring more than 350 runs is a commendable effort. He is deemed as the future star of Indian cricket and along with Ruturaj Gaikwad and Yashavi Jaiswal, he is expected to form the base of India’s batting. As said previously, the team is set. The more time they play with each other, the better it is for Indian cricket.

Prime Minister Modi must have been disappointed by India’s loss in the final – and not just because he’s a fan.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi may have felt a bit disappointed when he found himself sharing the frame with Australian Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles while handing the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 trophy to the winning captain.

Modi is known for his desire to command undivided attention during high-profile situations. So it is likely that the act of sharing the spotlight with another prominent figure during what was undoubtedly the most anticipated moment following a 46-day extravaganza didn’t go down well with him.

Needless to say, he hardly had a choice, given that the victorious captain, Pat Cummins, was an Australian, and not Modi’s compatriot. Hence, Modi couldn’t help involving the Australian deputy prime minister during the pivotal moment. 

But things could have been much different had the recipient been the Indian captain, Rohit Sharma. 

Just picture this: Modi, wearing the widest smile possible holding the trophy aloft, without any “third party” involved. Modi would pat Sharma on the shoulder, before theatrically passing the trophy to him, with fireworks and a sea of blue (and saffron, too) illuminating the background. And all this would have taken place inside an enormous sporting facility named after the prime minister.

Regardless of the apparent optics, it would have been as much a victory for Modi as for Sharma. The symbolic significance of this would soar to new heights, silently conveying that reaching the pinnacle of the world is achievable for India – but only under Modi’s able leadership.

And Modi could easily leverage this image as the go-to visual during his forthcoming electoral campaign in an attempt to ensure a third term in office.

But that’s not what happened. Thanks to Australia’s upset win, the World Cup eventually turned out to be somewhat a wasted opportunity for Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), despite its initial acclaim as “the greatest interactive electoral campaign of all time.” 

At one point, there was even speculation suggesting that if India emerged victorious, Modi might consider calling for elections approximately six months before the BJP’s term concludes in June 2024.

However, following the final in Ahmedabad, where India suffered a 6-wicket defeat to Australia on November 19, that possibility appears more remote than ever.

Nevertheless, Modi still had some tremendous takeaways from the event. Many have already given their verdict of the World Cup as a successful stage show for Modi’s domestic politics, akin to how hosting the G-20 summit in September played into his global aspirations.

Modi, advocating for a permanent seat on the U.N. Security Council for India, depicted the G-20 as a diplomatic rite of passage for his nation. However, in spite of Modi’s images gracing posters along the streets, the G-20 had minimal influence on the lives of everyday Indians.

This changed amidst the excitement and media focus on the World Cup over the past one and a half months.

The BJP, led by Modi, also wielded a direct influence on the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the organization of the World Cup through Jay Shah, the 35-year-old secretary of the party. Shah, the son of Amit Shah, India’s powerful home minister and a key ally of Modi, played a pivotal role in overseeing the coordination of the event. 

While the ICC officially orchestrated the World Cup, Shah’s prominent role as a spokesperson and key figure for the event highlighted the political entanglement surrounding the decisions related to the tournament. This ranged from scheduling to venue choices, contributing to the perception that political considerations played a significant role in the cricketing affairs of the nation.  

For instance, aside from hosting the opening and final matches, the Narendra Modi Stadium strategically accommodated high-profile encounters such as India-Pakistan and Australia-England. This ensured that the name “Modi” consistently occupied the spotlight throughout the entirety of the tournament.

Conversely, the BCCI’s choice to exclude Mohali, a city that hosted memorable World Cup matches in 1996 and 2011, was perceived by some as a deliberate omission directed at Punjab, which elected one of the BJP’s political rivals to power in the state elections last year.

Modi and his party had amassed substantial “political capital” well before the tournament commenced. 

India’s impressive 10-match winning streak leading up to the final only bolstered Modi’s “cricketwashing” agenda.

Now that India failed to secure the ultimate title, will it have any adverse effect on Modi and his party? Definitely not. The responsibility for the loss squarely rests on the team members and staff.

But what if India won? That victory would undoubtedly be attributed in part to Modi’s personal brilliance. It also would have provided the prime minister with an exclusive photo frame to cherish for the remainder of his life. While the final loss didn’t hurt Modi, it does represent an opportunity cost, as a win would likely have helped him. 

With that outcome not materializing, it’s reasonable for Modi to feel a temporary sense of disappointment.

A Big Year for India on the Global Stage Ends in Cricket Heartbreak

A dominant World Cup run closes with a loss to Australia in the final, a symbol of how far India has come and how far it still has to go.

The stage was amply set: an acrobatic air show by Indian military planes, performances by star Bollywood singers, a light display, lots of fireworks and — talked about as the highlight — an appearance by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the vast stadium that bears his name.

All India’s national cricket team, undefeated and heavily favored, had to do was win.

In the end, the Indians fell short, losing to Australia on Sunday night in the men’s World Cup, silencing the home crowd of about 100,000 and bringing heartache to more than a billion Indians who have grown used this year to unending validation of their country’s global rise.

The result was a bitter pill for a nation that expected a coronation as the most dominant force, measured in passion and money, in a sport that by some estimates is the world’s second most popular. It seemed to symbolize how far India has come, on and off the field, and how far it still has to go.

The Indian team had entered the final in Ahmedabad, in the western state of Gujarat, having handsomely won all 10 of its matches in the tournament. The image-savvy Mr. Modi hoped to lap up a moment of glory at Narendra Modi Stadium, in his home state, ahead of elections early next year, when he will be seeking a third term.

The choreography — of a strong leader handing the trophy to a commanding team that swept to victory — would serve to further fuse his image to the story of India’s ascent.

Women’s T20 World Cup debutants Scotland name squad

Star all-rounder Kathryn Bryce will lead Scotland in the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024.

Skipper Kathryn Bryce returns to lead the side for the upcoming global event.

Bryce last appeared in Scotland colours during the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier 2024 in May this year in the UAE. Her standout performance with the bat (177 runs) and ball (nine wickets) helped the European side qualify for their maiden Women’s T20 World Cup. Sri Lanka were the other qualifiers from the tournament.

We’ve got match-winners from start to finish within it, which I think is the big difference in the evolution of this squad during my short tenure. People have been putting in crucial performances each time they step onto the field, and that runs right the way through the squad," Wallace said.

“While it was really tough, it was also actually enjoyable to select this squad, looking back at many of those great performances, and we know all 15 players can go out there and win cricket matches for us at the World Cup.

“If you look at the recent Netherlands series, we won five games out of six, and there is a depth in the wider group now, proved by some of those who’ve not been selected but who’ve been pushing and performing all year. It was great to be able to argue about players’ cases in a positive sense based on the work they’ve all produced."

Scotland are in Group B of the competition along with neighbours England, South Africa, West Indies, and Bangladesh and Wallace is refusing to put any limitations on what his squad can achieve.

“I am so excited about what lies ahead. If we behave and play the way we have done during the last year, who knows what can happen at the World Cup – we could win as many games as we want to. The players play a great brand of cricket, and have so much belief in themselves, so the possibilities are limitless, really," he added.

“To help this squad qualify for the World Cup is the greatest thing I’ve achieved. To be part of history is massively special for all the players – and for me, though I’m just trying to help these players on a journey. I’m far more excited and more nervous about this World Cup than I was when I was a player!”

You can call to hard work, but I'm always ready for a chance. Only when you're ready can you prove yourself. Otherwise, I can only run to the field to give water! It's better to seize the opportunity when you get it," he added.

Head coach Simon Willis said he would expect to “have questions asked of me” if Hong Kong do not reach next year’s final round of T20 World Cup qualification.
