Dorothée Meilichzon designed the sumptuous interiors in locally inspired shades of terra cotta and soft yellow, while retaining the centuries-old exposed beams and Gothic windows: it’s the ideal spot for watching vaporettos buzz up and down the Giudecca Canal while you tuck into plates of Venetian cicchetti on the restaurant terrace, or take afternoon tea in the secluded garden. You can summon a gondola to the private pier or take a trip on hotel pontoon – or just set out on foot and lose yourself in ‘La Serenissima’…

Go for a Deluxe Canal room, for the extra space, sitting area, and views over the Giudecca Canal.

Packing tips

Binoculars, for peering at the pontoons zipping along the canal (bonus: you’ll feel like a Bond villain).

There are two ground-floor rooms which are suitable for wheelchair users, and all the common areas are also accessible.

All ages are welcome. Babysitting is available for €30 an hour (plus extra for taxis and if the sitter is needed after midnight). There are high chairs and a kids’ menu in the restaurant.

Sustainability efforts

All bath and cleaning products are environmentally friendly, water and energy consumption are monitored regularly and single-use plastics are a thing of the past. The restaurant uses local, seasonal produce and the hotel prioritises hiring local staff and working with local suppliers.

Food and Drink

The prime perches are on the sun-trap terrace, overlooking the Giudecca Canal.

Anything but stripes and straw boaters, unless you want to be ambushed by selfie-seeking tourists.

Hotel restaurant

The Giudecca-side restaurant specialises in modern Venetian cuisine, which means you can look forward to fresh takes on seafood classics, handmade pastas, and piles of polenta. Booths and banquettes make for an intimate indoor space, and there’s an outdoor terrace for alfresco dining. Meanwhile, in the rear courtyard, you’ll find tables set for breakfast and afternoon tea.

The Experimental Group prides itself on first-class and fiercely creative cocktails. Pick from a menu of newly imagined house drinks and sip them in the sun on the terrace, or in the Cristina Celestino–designed interior.

Last orders

Breakfast is from 7am until 11am; food is served in the restaurant until midnight. The Experimental Cocktail Club serves food from 7pm until 10pm, and drinks from 5pm until 2am.

Il Palazzo Experimental is on the Giudecca Canal, one of Venice’s busiest waterways just a few minutes’ walk from Ponte dell'Accademia on the Grand Canal.

You can fly into Venice Marco Polo airport with British Airways or Easyjet, then take a 30-minute transfer to the hotel (€130 each way).

Santa Lucia station is two kilometers from the hotel, which takes around 20 minutes by water taxi. There are high-speed Trenitalia services from Venice to Florence (two hours), Milan (two and a half hours) and Rome (three and a half hours).

Automobiles

There aren’t many roads here, ragazzi.

The hotel has its own private pier on the Rio del Ognissanti, so you can come and go easily by gondola or vaporetto water taxi.

Worth getting out of bed for

Wake up and check on the morning traffic on the Giudecca Canal , then head down for breakfast in the courtyard garden. After a day of pottering around piazzas and marvelling at museums, return to the very same spot for afternoon tea . Or, if you’re in the mood for something stiffer, one of the signature house cocktails .

Take a day trip to Burano Island , where colourful fishermen’s houses line the canals, and craftspeople weave delicate lace (even better, you get views of Venice from the boat). Rollover, Renaissance – it’s all about modern art at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection ; check the exhibition programme, and book tickets ahead of time. And then, of course, there’s the Rialto Bridge . OK, it’s not exactly under-the-radar, but it’s just one of those things that has to be seen – go at night and you’ll have fewer tourists to contend with.

A trip to Venice wouldn’t be complete without a stop at Piazza San Marco , the iconic centrepiece of the Floating City.

Local restaurants

There’s no shortage of coffee in Venice, but the best beans in town are at Caffe del Doge . Superstar chef Massimiliano Alajmo’s Amo  whips up baked, steamed and fried pizza along with family-style antipasti. Osteria al Portego (Calle Malvasia) is a Venice institution, known and loved for its bar counter cicchetti and local wines.

Cocktails are the cornerstone of the Experimental group, so stick with the hotel bar for your sazeracs and spritzes.

Venice is everything you expect and more – more museums than you could ever do justice to, more gondolas than you could ever count, and more people than it was ever designed to handle. So when you’re visiting it, you need to box clever – and that’s where Il Palazzo Experimental comes in. It’s only a few minutes’ walk (or boat ride) from everything you’ve seen on the postcards, but it’s niftily positioned off the tourist trail. Your local ‘hood, Dorsoduro, is the city’s erudite university district, which means that you can mix it with the locals at unpretentious wine bars, and escape the crowds at the end of a long day of sightseeing. In this most poetic of cities, even the building itself has a relatively prosaic recent history, as the headquarters of the Adriatica shipping company. All of which combines to make Il Palazzo Experimental a savvy choice for a first-time visitor or Venice veteran – and perhaps the city’s best-kept secret.

Review: Il Palazzo Experimental, Venice hotel review

Set the scene Venice can be light, fun and chic – who knew? Heavy velvet brocade and brown interiors are nowhere to be seen in this canal-side hotel, set in restored Renaissance palace, where you pretty much enter through the stylish, airy restaurant, and look through the lobby to a delightfully secluded back garden. In the bedrooms, designer Dorothée Meilichzon, a regular collaborator with the group, has paired Art Deco touches with the kind of playful, colourful, curvaceous furniture and fittings associated with Italy’s 1980s Memphis design movement.

What’s the story? This is the sixth hotel to be opened by the Experimental Group, and the first in Italy. Founded in 2007 by three globetrotting Parisian friends, the company focused on cocktail bars and restaurants before opening its first hotel in the French capital in 2015. And the scene created by the buzzy ground-floor grazing and quaffing spaces is a key part of the appeal here. The 16th-century building once belonged to a shipping firm, but pretty much all that remains of the original interior are the bedrooms’ outer doors, which designer Meilichzon has jazzed up in vibrant stripes that recall old gondola mooring posts.

What can we expect in our room? My pretty-in-pink executive room had a balcony that looked out over a busy, boat-filled stretch of the Giudecca Canal from a lovely Gothic triple window (though it’s only tiny – useful mostly as a photo-opportunity perch). There’s little to choose between the nine room types in terms of decor, though the size and colour scheme changes.

How about the food and drink? A Thirties mosaic on the palazzo’s façade reads ‘Adriatica’, the name of the shipping company that was based in this building for many years. Silvio Pezzana and Stefano ‘Toto’ Dell’Aringa of London’s Italian Supper Club took their cue from this when planning the menu, which riffs on dishes from the entire length of Italy’s Adriatic coast. The evening begins with aperitifs that push the Experimental Group’s cocktail remit – don’t miss the almondy house Negroni – accompanied by revisited Venetian cicchetti nibbles, such as sesame crackers with creamed cod and capers, and segues into a supper where pasta takes top billing. The meltingly good and light agnolotti filled with buffalo ricotta, lemon zest and mint stays on the palate for a long time.

Anything to say about the service? There’s an enthusiasm and willingness to help among the mostly young team that makes up for any small ingenuities. In fact, a large part of the charm of Il Palazzo Experimental lay in the amabilità of the welcome, and the fact that these guys clearly get on with each other and are excited to be here.

What sort of person stays here? This city attracts two types of visitor: the tick-off-the-sights tourists and the global literati and glitterati who come for the art Biennale, the film festival and the sheer joy of being in this unique place. Il Palazzo Experimental belongs unapologetically to the latter. That said, enterprising families who don’t like family hotels would probably love the place.

What’s the neighbourhood scene like? The Venice hotel lies far from the melee at the eastern end of Le Zattere, a long promenade beloved by dog-walkers, joggers, café loungers and the owners of the moored high-end yachts that just occasionally get in the way of the canal view from certain first-floor rooms. The streets between here and the church of San Nicolò are Venice at its most charmingly residential, and the area is becoming a bit of a restaurant hub, with nearby Riviera and Balkan-themed Sudest 1401 among the current highlights.

Anything else? The Palazzo is only the fourth of the group’s openings with a bar that bears the name of the neo-speakeasy that launched the whole ship back in 2007: Experimental Cocktail Club. A stylish nook with a street entrance on Le Zattere, it had still to open at the time of our visit in August 2019, but promises to become quite the haunt for serious mixology fans.

Is it worth it – why? If all that Casanova fakery bores you, if you believe that Venice should be fun rather than a worthy cultural chore, Il Palazzo Experimental may very well be the place for you. We love the fact that it comes across more as a hotel attached to a very cool bar-restaurant, rather than the other way round.

Otoh the Molino Stucky itself has an interesting history but it's still a big chain hotel.

Thanks both, you’ve made the decision very easy for me :)

Agreed, I find the Stucky soulless inside. Visit it for a drink at the rooftop bar, but there's really no comparison between the two hotels.

Have stayed at the Hilton (points stay). We had a great stay but I would much prefer to stay in the center of things than on the island across the canal even though the Hilton does have a convenient shuttle boat.

For others I think they may prefer the unique property, luxury amenities (pool, rooftop bar, private dock), quiet aspect and the overall standardization one gets with a chain ; especially an American tourist that may prefer things feel more as they are at home.

If you prefer to have things at your doorstep and overall a more Italian feel ; go with the Il Palazzo Experimental

Italian Supper Club is incredibly excited to announce their very first dinner outside London in what is going to be a great night of bold flavours, interesting ingredients and loads of fun. In Milano-Venezia the menu will draw inspiration from the rich Milanese and Venetian food tradition and wants to bring to the table the buzz of 2 of the most visionary cities in the North of Italy. ‍

‍ We will start the evening with different Chicchetti alla Milanese to pay tribute to the great habit both cities have on aperitivo: a few nibbles to wet your appetite before the main event. They will include “deep fried schie and white polenta”, a typical small prawn fished in the lagoon at this specific time of the year and then “homemade brioche, malga butter and anchovies”

For mains we will have a classic saffron milanese  risotto paired with canestrelli, a small type of typical Venetian scallop and pork neck milanese with pumpkin in saor.

To finish things off, a typical Venetian pinza served  panettone style with plenty of raisins and a boozy sauce. Wine for the nights will be an exquisite selection of wines from Lombardia and Veneto.
