800 Movie Review: A Sincere Biopic That Needed Better Craft
Cast: Madhurr Mittal Mahima Nambiyar
Director: MS Sripathy
Runtime: 159 Minutes
Available in: Theatres
When 800 begins to narrate the life of Muttiah Muralitharan, it starts with the Srilanka of 1945, almost three decades before Muralitharan was born. It was when bonded labourers from Tamil Nadu were sent to Sri Lanka. One among them was Muralitharan’s grandparents and the community soon came to be called Indian Tamils in Srilanka or Hill Country Tamils (Malayaga Tamilar). MS Sripathy’s intention to begin the story with the origin of his community and not his birth is a commendable choice because his biopic delves deep into his identity and the constant need to prove it.
Identity As A Conflict
At one point, Muralitharan claims that it is not about whether he is a Sri Lankan or Tamilan but that he is a cricketer. To which, his father replies, “ Nammaloda adaiyaalatha naamalae nirnaika mudinja, inga prechanaye ila. (If we could decide our own identities, there would be no issues here.) A visual analogue of Muralitharan's statement can be seen when we first meet the cricketer as a young boy (played by a superb Rithvik). When the elder boys in his neighbourhood do not let him join their cricket game, he says he would field for both teams; a signifier of how he always remains somewhere in between, trying to balance his identities as a Srilankan and Tamilan.
Another major event the film extensively covers is the chucking controversy, where he was suspected of having thrown the ball by flexing his elbow too much. The film is at its best when it is about the controversy and how it affected Muralitharan. Be it in explaining his issue or how ICC (International Cricket Council) dealt with it, the makers ensure it is spelt out clearly to the general audience without compromising on depicting the emotional impact it had on the player.
Information Overpowers Intimacy
The film explores his inner struggles throughout its runtime but always keeps the questioners as outsiders. For example, when he gives an autograph to a Tamil guy from Sri Lanka, the man sarcastically asks if he ever speaks Tamil. When he is constantly ignored during team selection, people suggest it is because he is not a Sinhalese (native Srilankans). But when he joins the team, we do not see if this identity affects his relationship with his fellow players. In fact, except for his relationship with then-captain Arjuna Ranatunga, we are never told if he had any close friendships within the team or outside. At some point, his wife, Madhimalar ( Mahima Nambiar ), is suddenly introduced, and though they have a lovely chat a little later, such random placements pull you out of his world and always keep you at a distance. So much that even when you are witnessing his own journey, you don't feel like you're travelling with him. You see all that happened to him, even those in his personal life. But you never get to know Muralitharan, the person, and how he actually sees all these events in his life.
What upsets you the most is how his wife is introduced. It is through on-screen text! The film uses the technique several times to give you more details or facts about his life. However, this technique mostly makes it hard for the viewers to understand the story. Take the scene where he takes 16 wickets in a Test match, for instance. The sequence is already rushed with Muralitharan constantly taking wickets and is accompanied by an odd background score of whistles and thara local tune-like music. While you could have easily missed out on these 16 wickets as the text plays over the scene, it is even tougher to read it fully because the words quickly fade away. Likewise, except for the last Test match, the usual thrill and excitement for a cricket match are swapped for matter-of-fact captures of the historic feats.
Features Glimpses Of Beauty
That said, there are also a few brilliant filmmaking touches. When Muralitharan gets selected to join the National squad for the first time, we are not told through any major announcements or an amplified background score. Instead, we learn about it when his parents worriedly talk to one of the selection heads about sending their son to a different country. The scenes featuring only Muralitharan and the stadium are poetic. The cricketer possibly looks at the stadium as a place where he can be free of his identity and just play his heart out. Probably an empty stadium is one that never judges him. When he enters England for the first time, his fellow players are trying to close all the windows in the dressing room to avoid the cold breeze. But Muralitharan stands outside the boundary point, gazing at the stadium and the foreign players who are training. At the end of the tournament, when he is sort of mocked by his teammates, he opens the same door and walks out to the balcony with his tears visible only to the stadium. Years later, when he is enjoying a peak moment in his career and walks out the same way, you expect it to be a moment of ecstasy. But then he witnesses an event happening in the ground which completely changes the way he looks at his career.
Madhur Mittal proves to be a wonderful casting choice. Not just in the way he brings Muralitharan in front of your eyes and makes you feel his inner struggles, but how he shows the transformation of Muralitharan over the years. If innocence, blind confidence and nervousness are what Mittal shows the first time Muralitharan steps on the land of England as a 19-year-old, the next time he visits the place, Mittal completely changes his body language and steps out of the bus with more confident attitude and a burning aim to rewrite his own history. The cricketer has multiple records to his name. But I think the filmmakers chose to centre their narrative around the 800 Test wickets milestone for a reason. It is not to show how he managed to take those 800 wickets but to tell about the other 200 wickets (to reach 1000) that he chose not to try for.

‘800’ movie review: Muralitharan’s biopic is an ordinary telling of an extraordinary tale
Starring madhur mittal as the legendary sri lankan bowler, this sporting flick could have done with a lot more drama and depth.
Updated - October 06, 2023 06:49 pm IST
A still from ‘800’
World Cup 2023 is underway, but there’s something else that might interest cricket fans now. Playing on the big screen is Sri Lankan cricketer Mutthiah Muralitharan’s biopic, titled 800.
This 159-minute flick starts off with both sports and drama: Murali (played by Madhur Mittal) needs a few wickets to hit the magical 800 mark in his last Test, but some stubborn batting by the Indian tailenders and menacing bowling by Malinga at the other almost threatens to take away from the celebrations. There’s some rain as well earlier in the match. It’s probably the sporting equivalent of Rajinikanth’s introduction sequence in Thalapathi, where the actor — drenched in rain — takes on some bad guys.
If cricket isn’t about romance and drama, what is?
This scene unfolds at a time when Muralitharan is one of the best in the business. But his beginnings were very different. 800 takes us to the fields of Sri Lanka, where Muralitharan’s family struggles to make ends meet even as a young Murali takes to the ball. At a hostel, where he’s admitted as a young boy, toys don’t cut it for him. Neither does milk. All Murali wants is a ball, and all he wants to do is bowl.
All this might make for great cinematic material, but 800 doesn’t go all out. Like Murali’s reticent and almost-hesitant approach to the sport, the film just touches on many aspects of his life, largely sticking to the facts and thus coming across as just a visual record of the cricketer’s glorious achievements.
800 (Tamil)
Makers of most sporting biopics have the onerous task of choosing the best highs of the protagonist’s life and presenting that as an assortment on the big screen. The problem for 800 director MS Sripathy, who has done a great job with researching Muralitharan’s life, is the multiple angles that are present: a search for identity, a search for passion and the many hurdles in his cricketing journey. By trying to squeeze in all these aspects into his 159-minute runtime, Sripathy’s material lacks a certain focus.
However, it does have the highs. Like the first time Muralitharan discovers that he can spin the ball, a moment that gives him great joy. Or, much later, when he’s just a few inches away from the 800-wicket mark, a sequence that thankfully gives us a tension-filled last-ball finish kind of experience. There’s also simmering tension in the scene where Murali comes face-to-face with separatist groups, the leader of which is played by actor Narain. There is definitely some sincerity in these sequences. Take the lead actor, Madhur Mittal, for instance. Some audience members might be tempted to veer into the ‘What if Vijay Sethupathi had played this role?’ debate, but Madhur is apt and presents to us what Muralitharan really is, not just in demeanour and body language but also in his unorthodox bowling action. It’s not just Madhur; 800 gets most of its secondary casting right, prime among that being King Ratnam as Arjuna Ranatunga.
RD Rajasekar’s camera not just captures the different moods of the protagonist, who is trying repeatedly to prove himself to the world, but also provides visual insight into the cricket matches.
The chucking controversy, a huge part of Muralitharan’s career, gets a lot of screentime. While that might be important to the story, it can get a little jarring for people who aren’t too interested in the game and its intricacies. That’s the general mood of 800 itself. It might take cricket lovers on a nostalgic ride to the past, but it lacks the firepower to reach a winning total.
800 is currently in theatres

Muttiah Muralitharan’s ‘800’ - A story worth telling, told well
M S Sripathy, Madhur Mittal, and the '800' team can take pride in the fact that they have narrated the tale of one of cricket's greatest legends, Muttiah Muralitharan, in the best possible manner. There's no chucking here! However, they will face intense scrutiny, for they dared to stand alongside the likes of 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag,' 'M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story,' 'Dangal,' and more. '800' will undoubtedly hold its ground.
That said, the 2 hours and 39 minutes long film feels like a montage of The Magician's life that, at the same time, works for and against the movie. It's not just another rags-to-(sports) riches saga but also a survival story of a Tamil in Sri Lanka. Sripathy, who co-wrote the story with Booker Prize winner Shehan Karunatilaka, has done this meticulously by selecting the right moments from Muralitharan's life to portray his perspective and game.
The sports action may not match the high-budget movies in this genre, but it suffices to tie the story together. Like Muralitharan, Sripathy is unafraid to make his point. Watching Madhur Mittal portray Muralitharan makes one easily forget the question, 'How would Vijay Sethupathi have portrayed Lankan legend?'. The 'Slumdog Millionaire' actor has done a fantastic job as Murali, not just in appearance but also in essence.

'The Greatest of All Time': This Thalapathy Vijay starrer is a nostalgic yet uneven ride | Movie Review
If Sripathy had chosen one pivotal conflict in the life of the Lankan Legend instead of attempting to cover as much ground at breakneck speed, this could have been Madhur Mittal's role of a lifetime. Sripathy initiates the story from the washed-out second day of the Sri Lanka vs India Test at Galle.
With Nassar as the narrator, he unfolds The Magician's life story over the course of the next 'three days' of the Test. It was a brilliant move by the director to position a Sri Lankan Tamil from the Eelam opposite Nassar. To effectively narrate the story of a figure like Murali, who faced criticism from Tamils worldwide for his neutral stance during the Lankan conflict, one must address those probing questions.
And that's precisely what Sripathy has chosen to do. In the climax, the filmmaker takes Nassar, his sports journalist son who lost his legs and cricket dreams in a bombing, and the Man from the North to the ground, all eagerly waiting to witness Murali claim his 800th wicket. The message he aimed to convey was clear: even those who pointed fingers at Murali had to acknowledge his greatness, at least on the field.

Director MS Sripathy seems to have gone the extra mile by digging deeper into ace cricketer Muralidaran’s difficult past to come up with a compelling biopic on the Sri Lankan ace cricketer — 800: The Movie .
The film comprehensively depicts the significant events in the life of Muthiah Muralidaran from the time he was a boy to the time he achieved the record of scoring 800 test wickets — a feat no other cricketer had done before.
800 also presents the sensitive events that happened both in Sri Lanka and in the life of Muthiah Muralidaran, from the viewpoint of the cricketer.
An honest viewpoint
Director MS Sripathy seems to have been not just careful but also honest about the way certain controversial topics have been dealt with in his movie.

From the way Tamils are shown being attacked by Sinhalese people in the island nation to the way the Australian umpires chose to hound the spinning ace with allegations of chucking despite the ICC clearing the bowler’s legitimate bowling action, Sripathy doesn’t look to hide or distort facts.
Having said that, the director also does not delve deep into controversies and looks to only make fleeting references to such incidents and move on.
MS Sripathy partly succeeds in making 800 strike a chord with you. At some point, you begin to empathise with Muralidaran for the unfortunate and difficult position he found himself to be in.
However, the film’s content is not so strong as to leave lingering memories in you once you exit the theatre.
What it does in driving across is that it makes you understand that Muralidaran, despite having been honest to his craft and himself, has had to repeatedly keep proving himself because random people kept casting aspersions on him.
The film does not just show the challenges that the cricketer faced but also all those who stood by him during his darkest hours, such as Sri Lankan captain Arjuna Ranatunga.

Performances.

Madhurr Mittal, as Muthiah Muralidaran, does a reasonable job of playing the spin legend.
Since his bowling action is not quite the same as Muralidharan’s unique bowling action, the actor struggles to replicate the spinner’s mannerisms on the field. However, he is a lot more convincing as Muralidaran off the field.
Mahima Nambiyar, as Madhi Malar, is just perfect. The actress, who appears only for a brief while, is a natural and waltzes into the role of Muralidaran’s life partner with absolute ease.
Sri Lankan actor King Ratnam, who plays Arjuna Ranatunga, comes up with a fantastic performance, as do Nassar as Mugunthan Sathasivam and Vela Ramamurty as Muthiah.
Master Rythvik, who plays the six-year-old Muralidaran, is just adorable and steals your heart right at the start of the film.
Ghibran’s music goes with the flow and RD Rajasekar’s cinematography is neat.
In all, Sripathy’s 800 is a reasonably good film which is likely to delight cricket lovers while coming across as a fairly engaging entertainer to film lovers.

800 Movie Review: Madhur Mittal Marks A Notable Debut As Muttiah Muralidharan
Directed by m.s sripathy, the tamil movie releases in cinemas on october 6.
Director : M.S Sripathy
Cast : Madhur Mittal, Mahima Nambiar, Nasser, Yog Japee
Where : Releasing in cinemas on October 6
Rating : 3 stars
Sports dramas make for rousing narratives. Especially, when there is very little about the lives of our favourite sportspersons out there in the public domain. Considering that most of the knowledge available stem from either an outsider’s perspective or from an insider who is well-acquainted to said public figures, a good sports biopic considerably becomes a favourable theatrical bet.
While Indian films have explored the lives of famous cricketers from the likes of Kapil Dev, Sachin Tendulkar and M.S Dhoni to name a few, seldom has there been a germ of a film realised where the gaze is shifted towards an international achiever.
Filmmaker M.S Sripathy makes a well-intentioned debut with the inspiring story of ace bowler Muttiah Muralidharan with 800. The film offers a unique perspective on how a cricketer’s journey stemmed from an emotion of wanting to be known for his game and not his identity.
Young actor Madhur Mittal shoulders the responsibility of playing the Sri Lankan cricket legend and practically disappears into embodying every mannerism and expression that is known to popular perception.
As the beginning credits roll, we are briefed about how England popularised the game of cricket during its rule in India, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and West Indies. Soon the story shifts towards how Murali’s grandparents migrated from Tamil Nadu to settle down in Northern Sri Lanka and work at Kandy’s tea estates. A few scenes later, riots between the Sinhalese and Lankan Tamilians dictate the fate of Murali’s relatives, who move back to Tamil Nadu, while young Murali and his parents remain in Kandy. From here on, the movie focuses upon how Murali’s Tamil origins became imperative for him to mark his place in the Sri Lankan cricket team and how did he eventually chart about his milestone-laden career where he took over 800 test wickets. The film also takes the opportunity to address the chucking allegations that were hurled against the cricketer by Australian cricketers and other regulatory authorities.
Enabled by Ghibran’s powerful score, Sripathy executes his script with a lot of sincerity. Unfortunately, much of the writing is amateur and the screenplay falters on more than a few occasions. While the movie thankfully avoids the Wikipedia trope of depicting biopics, one wishes there was more focus laid upon Murali’s cricketing career than indulging in how national politics and social biases hampered his opportunities.
Yet, it is left to the responsibilities of Mittal who effectively conveys Murali’s initial ambition and child-like frustration, behind the seemingly menacing cricketer, we’ve always witnessed of him, on the field. If not for the young actor’s seamless act, 800 could nosedive to a point of no redemption. Thankfully, it sustains itself and serves as a humble reminder that there are multiple human stories of international sporting legends, waiting to be told.

800-The Movie Review: An extraordinary tale of a cricket legend
The film captures the many facets of Muralitharan's life -- the tale of an oppressed Tamil Sri Lankan, someone who was once called a chucker, later being universally acknowledged as one of the greatest cricketers ever
Mumbai: We all know about the on-field journey of the Sri Lankan spin maestro Muttiah Muralitharan .
Every cricket lover has seen his impressive bowling during intense tournaments, but this is the first time audiences are being introduced to the story of the real struggles of this living legend off the cricket field — from being oppressed, mistreated, attacked, bullied to taking everything in his stride and becoming the highest wicket taker in the history of the game.
- Kumari Srimathi: A refreshing tale worth binge-watching
Coming from a poor family, and going through riots, Muralitharan’s story as chronicled in the film will inspire you to dream, and follow it. Based on true incidents from the life of the first Sri Lankan to be inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame , played on screen by Madhur Mittal, the sports drama is not just a treat for cricket fans, but also a story that channelises emotions and narrates the heart-breaking tale of someone who, despite staggering odds, achieved something unheard of.
The story captures the many facets of Muralitharan’s life — the tale of an oppressed Tamil Sri Lankan, someone who was once called a chucker, later being universally acknowledged as one of the greatest cricketers ever. The film also shows how Murali finds solace in cricket, stands up to bullies, and transforms from an excitable pace bowler into the highest wicket-taker in cricket’s history.
The film also takes a deep dive into political issues — the conflict between the Tamils and the Sinhalese; terror attacks; the issue of nationality; and a whole lot more. Murali, despite being an ethnic Tamil, proves his commitment to the Sri Lankan team and fans, and rises above every adverse circumstance, making him an awe-inspiring individual. The film also features legendary cricketers such as Shane Warne,Arjuna Ranatunga, Kapil Dev and more, played by different actors.
This is the wow factor in the movie, apart from Murali of course. The music and background score of the movie add to the experience of this magnificent masterpiece, which is cinematographically rich and brilliant. Madhur Mittal has played Murali as if he was born to do the role on screen. The battle we fight within, will lead to victory outside. This truism is the message that we take home from the film. It’s a film that must be watched with family and friends.

ARM movie review: A thrilling folklore fantasy with Tovino Thomas in top form
Ajayante randam moshanam (arm).
Ajayante Randam Moshanam (ARM) is a folklore fantasy set in feudal Kerala, centred around a magical lamp crafted from a fallen comet.
- Jithin Laal
- Tovino Thomas,
- Basil Joseph,
- Krithi Shetty
- Fantasy/action
ARM is short for Ajayante Randam Moshanam, which means Ajayan's second theft. However, the title is somewhat misleading as the entire movie revolves around Ajayan's (played by Tovino Thomas) first theft. This film, penned by debutant screenwriter Sujith Nambiar and directed by Jithin Laal, features many narrators. This narrative style gives the film a distinctive quality, reminiscent of oral storytelling. The same story takes on different shapes and moods depending on the teller and the listener—like the tale of Maniyan (again, played by Tovino). The grandmother shivers at the mere mention of his name during a cold night in the '80s, while her granddaughter is thrilled to hear and imagine his adventures with a sense of adulation.
ARM begins with an omnipresent force, voiced by Mohanlal, floating in outer space, declaring, "I see everything." From there, we are taken into the world of mortals, where deception is the order of the day. It starts as folklore, told by grandparents to their grandchildren, about the great feats of bravery shown by extraordinary men in the face of crushing adversity and the magnanimity and generosity of kings who honoured heroes with gifts of their choosing.
A comet crashes into a small village in feudal Kerala. Years pass with the metal stone from outer space lying at the bottom of a deep hole created upon its impact. A king, upon learning about it, uses his resources to retrieve the piece of the star and takes it back to his kingdom. He enlists the services of the best blacksmiths to craft a beautiful lamp from that space metal. Under the light of this lamp, his kingdom flourishes. Word soon spreads about the magical powers of the lamp, capturing the imaginations of the people and leaving everyone craving a piece of that magic.
ALSO READ: ARM star Tovino Thomas: 'If I do a Telugu multi-starrer my career in Malayalam cinema will end'
The king who possesses the lamp becomes indebted to Kunjikelu (Tovino). In good spirits, the king promises to give Kunjikelu anything he wishes for. No points for guessing: Kunjikelu wants to take the magical lamp back to his village, where the comet originally fell. The king honours his wishes and hands the lamp to Kunjikelu.
Kunjikelu returns to his village as a hero, and the villagers hold him in great reverence. But once his mission is accomplished, he falls on hard times and sickness. The powerful men in the village disown his legacy, tarnish his lineage, and prevent those of "low birth" from even seeing the lamp. Maniyan, the love child of Kunjikelu, rebels against those who mistreated him and his loved ones.
Jithin Laal’s direction is complemented by the film’s remarkable visual aesthetics. The film’s depiction of feudal Kerala, its grand palaces, dense forests, and intricate cave systems, showcases not only the artistry but also the cultural depth of the region. Cinematographer Jomon T. John's breathtaking frames, paired with Dhibu Ninan Thomas' atmospheric score, pull viewers into the heart of the narrative, making the world of ARM feel both immersive and fantastical.
Tovino Thomas, in top form, delivers a career-defining performance. As Maniyan, he embodies raw physicality and emotional depth, making his portrayal of the defiant thief unforgettable. His ability to switch between the distinct personalities of his multiple roles highlights his versatility and cements his place as one of the finest actors of his generation.
It’s astonishing to note that this film was made on a budget of just Rs 30 crore. ARM’s visual grandeur and meticulous attention to detail rival productions with much higher budgets.
The fluid storytelling is one of ARM's most distinctive qualities, painting a dynamic portrait of its protagonists. This film is a triumph in storytelling, performance, and visual design.
