സാ ങ്കേതിക വിദ്യ ദിനംപ്രതി വികസിച്ച്, വായനയെ ഡിജിറ്റല്‍ പ്ലാറ്റ്‌ഫോമിലേക്ക് മാറിയെങ്കിലും വായനാനുഭാവത്തിന്റെ മാറ്റ് ഒട്ടും കുറഞ്ഞിട്ടില്ലെന്ന് തന്നെ പറയാം. ''വായിച്ചാല്‍ വളരും, വായിച്ചില്ലെങ്കിലും വളരും വായിച്ചാല്‍ വിളയും വായിച്ചില്ലെങ്കില്‍ വളയും''എന്നാണ് കവി കുഞ്ഞുണ്ണിമാഷ് പറഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നത്. ഈ വാക്കുകള്‍ പരിചിതമല്ലാത്ത മലയാളികള്‍ വളരെ വിരളമായിരിക്കും. വായിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ എങ്ങനെയാണ് വളരുന്നത്? വായന തലച്ചോറില്‍ എന്തെല്ലാം മാറ്റങ്ങള്‍ ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്നുണ്ട്? എന്നിങ്ങനെയുള്ള ചോദ്യങ്ങളിലേക്ക് നമുക്കൊന്ന് കണ്ണോടിക്കാം.

വായന എന്ന അനുഭവം തലച്ചോറില്‍ എന്തെല്ലാം മാറ്റങ്ങള്‍ ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്നുണ്ട് എന്ന് നമുക്ക് നോക്കാം. ചെറിയ കുട്ടികള്‍ മുതല്‍ മുതിര്‍ന്നവര്‍ വരെയുള്ളവരില്‍ വായന, അറിവിനോടൊപ്പം അവരുടെ വൈകാരിക ബുദ്ധിവികാസത്തിനു സഹായിക്കുമെന്ന് ഗവേഷകര്‍ കണ്ടെത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.

പുസ്തകങ്ങള്‍ ആഴത്തില്‍ വായിക്കുന്നതിലൂടെ വൈകാരിക ബുദ്ധിവികാസം ത്വരിതപ്പെടുത്തുമെന്ന് നമ്മുടെ തലച്ചോറിന്റെ ന്യൂറോപ്ലാസ്റ്റിസിറ്റി എന്ന പ്രതിഭാസത്തെ ആസ്പദമാക്കി പ്രശസ്ത മന:ശാസ്ത്രഞനായിരുന്ന ഡാനിയേല്‍ ഗോളെമാന്‍ പ്രതിപാദിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.

എങ്കില്‍ പിന്നെ വൈകാരിക ബുദ്ധിവികാസവും ന്യൂറോപ്ലാസ്റ്റിസിറ്റിയും എന്തെന്ന് നോക്കാം. നമ്മുടെ സ്വന്തം വികാരങ്ങളെയും മറ്റുള്ളവരുടെ വികാരങ്ങളെയും മനസിലാക്കുവാനും സാഹചര്യത്തിന് അനുസരിച്ച് പെരുമാറാനുമുളള കഴിവാണ് വൈകാരിക ബുദ്ധി അഥവാ Emotional Intelligence. ഇന്നത്തെ സമകാലീന ഗവേഷണങ്ങള്‍ വൈകാരിക ബുദ്ധിവികാസത്തിന്റെ ആവശ്യകതയ്ക്ക് കൂടുതല്‍ ഊന്നല്‍ നല്‍കുന്നുണ്ട്.

നമ്മുടെ ജീവിതത്തെ ആരോഗ്യകരമായരീതിയില്‍ അഭിമുഖീകരിക്കുന്നതിനും സാമൂഹിക ഇടപെടലുകളില്‍ വന്നുചേരാവുന്ന പ്രശ്‌നങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് പരിഹാരം കണ്ടെത്താനും സാമൂഹിക ബന്ധങ്ങള്‍ ആരോഗ്യകരമായി നിലനിര്‍ത്തുവാനും മാനസികാരോഗ്യം അതിന്റെ പൂര്‍ണ്ണതയില്‍ കാത്തുസൂക്ഷിക്കുവാനും വൈകാരിക ബുദ്ധി അത്യന്താപേക്ഷിതമാണ്. ഇന്നത്തെ മാറിയ ജീവിതശൈലിയില്‍ കുട്ടികള്‍ മൊബൈല്‍ഫോണിനും ഇന്റര്‍നെറ്റിനും അടിമപ്പെട്ടു പോകാതെ ഇത്തരം ജീവിത നൈപുണികള്‍ നേടിയെടുക്കാന്‍ അവരെ പ്രാപ്തരാക്കേണ്ടത് സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ ഉത്തരവാദിത്വമാണ്.

ഇനി ന്യൂറോപ്ലാസ്റ്റിസിറ്റി എന്ന പ്രതിഭാസം എന്തെന്ന് നോക്കാം. നമുക്ക് ലഭിക്കുന്ന അനുഭവങ്ങളിലൂടെയും പരിശീലനത്തിലൂടെയും തലച്ചോറിന് നമ്മുടെ സ്വഭാവസവിശേഷതകളില്‍ പുരോഗതിയുണ്ടാക്കാന്‍ ഏതു സമയത്തും കഴിയും എന്നതാണ് ഈ വാക്കുകൊണ്ട് അര്‍ത്ഥമാക്കുന്നത്. ഇത് തലച്ചോറിന്റെ ഒരു പ്രതിഭാസമാണ്. ഉദാഹരണമായി, ഒരു കുട്ടി കണക്കില്‍ ജന്മനാ വളരെ പിന്നോക്കമാണെന്നിരിക്കട്ടെ നിരന്തരമായ പരിശ്രമവും അവന് കിട്ടുന്ന നല്ല പരിശീലനവും അവന്റെ കഴിവില്‍ പുരോഗതിയുണ്ടാക്കും. കൂടുതല്‍ ലളിതമായി പറഞ്ഞാല്‍ ഒരാള്‍ക്ക് അപകടത്തിലൂടെ തലയ്ക്ക് ക്ഷതമേറ്റ് സംസാരശേഷി നഷ്ടമായാല്‍ സ്പീച് തെറാപ്പി നല്‍കാറുണ്ട്. ഇതിനുപിന്നിലുള്ള തത്വവും വിരല്‍ ചൂണ്ടുന്നത് നിരന്തരമായ പരിശീലനങ്ങളും നമുക്ക് ലഭിക്കുന്ന അനുഭവങ്ങളും തലച്ചോറിലെ ന്യൂറോണുകളെ സ്വധീനിക്കുകയും അവരില്‍ പുരോഗതിയുണ്ടാക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നുണ്ടെന്നു തന്നെയാണ്. ഇപ്രകാരമുള്ള പ്രതിഭാസം നല്ല പുസ്തകങ്ങള്‍ ആഴത്തില്‍ വായിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ സംഭവിക്കുന്നുണ്ടെന്ന് തന്നെയാണ് ഗവേഷകര്‍ കണ്ടെത്തിയിട്ടുള്ളത്. അതെ, നല്ല സമൂഹത്തെ വാര്‍ത്തെടുക്കാന്‍ പുസ്തകവായനയ്ക്കുള്ള പങ്ക് ഒഴിച്ചുകൂടാനാവാത്തതാണ്.

നല്ല പുസ്തകങ്ങള്‍ നമ്മെ ചിന്തിപ്പിക്കുകയും നമ്മുടെ അന്വേഷണത്വര വികസിപ്പിക്കുകയും കൂടുതല്‍ അറിവ് നേടാന്‍ നമ്മെ പ്രാപ്തരാക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. ഇപ്രകാരം നാം സ്വതന്ത്രമായി ചിന്തിക്കാനും അത് വഴി കൂടുതല്‍ സ്വയംപര്യാപ്തരാകുവാനും അനീതികളെ എതിര്‍ക്കുവാനും നല്ല സമൂഹ്യനൈപുണികള്‍ നേടിയെടുക്കാനും നമുക്ക് സാധിക്കുന്നു. ബൗദ്ധികവും സാമൂഹികവുമായ വികാസത്തിന് പുസ്തകവായന സഹായിക്കുമെന്ന് നമുക്ക് നിസംശയം പറയുവാന്‍ സാധിക്കും.

അതെ നല്ല തലമുറയെ വാര്‍ത്തെടുത്ത് നല്ല വ്യക്തിത്വം വളര്‍ത്തിയെടുക്കുവാന്‍ ചെറുപ്പം മുതലേ കുട്ടികളില്‍ വായനാ ശീലം വളര്‍ത്താം. നല്ല പുസ്തകങ്ങള്‍ തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കുവാന്‍ മാതാപിതാക്കള്‍ക്ക് കുട്ടികളെ സഹായിക്കുകയുമാകാം. നമ്മുടെ മസ്തിഷ്‌കം ഒരു അത്ഭുതം തന്നെയാണ്. അതുകൊണ്ട് ഇനിയും വൈകിയിട്ടില്ല ഈ വായനാവാരത്തില്‍ നമുക്ക് നല്ല പുസ്തകങ്ങള്‍ വായിച്ച് നല്ലൊരു ശീലത്തിനു തുടക്കം കുറിക്കാം.

കുട്ടികളിലെ വായനാശീലം വളര്‍ത്തണം

വായന അറിവിന്റെ ഉറവിടമാണ്. ലോകത്തിലെ മഹാന്മാരില്‍ മിക്കവരുംതന്നെ നല്ല വായനക്കാരായിരുന്നു. വായന വ്യക്തികളുടെ വ്യക്തിത്വത്തെ സ്വാധീനിക്കുന്നു. എബ്രഹാംലിങ്കന്‍ എന്ന ദരിദ്രബാലന്‍ ചെറുപ്രായത്തിലെ വായനയില്‍ വളര്‍ന്നു. ഒരു പുസ്തകം വാങ്ങുവാനുള്ള കാശ് കൈയിലില്ലായിരുന്ന അവസ്ഥയിലും ആ ബാലന്‍ കടംവാങ്ങിയ പുസ്തകം വായിച്ചും, അത് നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടപ്പോള്‍ പകരം പണിചെയ്ത്കടംവീട്ടി അറിവിന്റെ അടിസ്ഥാനമിട്ടത് കുട്ടിക്കാലം മുതലുള്ള വായനാശീലത്തിലൂടെയായിരുന്നു. ഇന്നത്തെ കുട്ടികള്‍ വായിച്ചു കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ ഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നതിലുപരി ഗൂഗിളില്‍ തപ്പി ഉത്തരം എളുപ്പത്തില്‍ കണ്ടെത്തി പരിഹാരം അന്വേഷിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ ആരോ വായിച്ച് എഴുതിവച്ചവ കോപ്പിയടിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ സ്വന്തമായി വായിച്ചുനേടുന്നതിന്റെ സംതൃപ്തി ലഭിക്കുന്നില്ല. വിരല്‍തുമ്പില്‍ ഉത്തരം കണ്ടെത്താന്‍ കഴിയുന്നതിനാല്‍ വായന വിരസമായിത്തീരുന്നു. പത്തുമിനിട്ടുപോലും ശ്രദ്ധയോടെ വായിക്കാനിരിക്കാന്‍ അവര്‍ക്ക് പലപ്പോഴും കഴിയുന്നില്ല. പുസ്തകം ഒരു പേജുവായിച്ചു തുടങ്ങുന്നതേ അവര്‍ക്ക് ബോറടിയാണ്. ഉടനെ പുസ്തകം അടച്ചുവച്ച് ടി.വി. ഓണ്‍ ചെയ്യുകയോ, കമ്പ്യൂട്ടര്‍ തുറക്കുകയോ, പഠിക്കാന്‍ കിട്ടിയ മൊബൈലില്‍ ഗെയിം കളിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുകയോ ചെയ്യലാണ് കുട്ടികളുടെ പതിവ്. വാങ്ങികൊടുക്കുന്ന പുസ്തകം പലപ്പോഴും ഡൈനിംഗ് ടേബിളിലും, കിടപ്പുമുറിയിലും, വായനാസ്ഥലത്തും, കളിസ്ഥലത്തും, ചിലപ്പോള്‍ അടുക്കളയിലും കാണാം. ഒരു ചെറിയപുസ്തകം പോലും വായിച്ചുതീര്‍ക്കാന്‍ അവര്‍ക്ക് മടുപ്പാണ്, മടിയാണ്, ബോറടിയാണ്.

കുട്ടികള്‍ ചെറുപ്പത്തില്‍ തന്നെ വായനാശീലം വളര്‍ത്താന്‍ മാതാപിതാക്കള്‍ പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കണം. കുട്ടികളില്‍ വായനാശീലം വളര്‍ത്തുന്ന മാതാപിതാക്കളും അധ്യാപകരും കുട്ടികള്‍ക്കൊപ്പം നല്ലശീലങ്ങള്‍ പഠിക്കുന്നു, പുതിയവാക്കുകളും പഠിക്കുന്നു. ദിവസത്തില്‍ ഇരുപത്തിനാലുമണിക്കൂറില്‍ ഇരുപതുമിനിറ്റെങ്കിലും കുട്ടികളെ വായിക്കാന്‍ ഇരുത്തിയാല്‍ വായന അവരുടെ ഭാവിജീവിതത്തെ കൂടുതല്‍ ഫലദായകമാക്കും. വായനാശീലം വളര്‍ത്താന്‍, പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കാന്‍ പലമാര്‍ഗ്ഗങ്ങള്‍ നമുക്കു മുമ്പിലുണ്ട്. പരിശീലനമാണ് കുട്ടികളെ കൂടുതല്‍ പൂര്‍ണ്ണരാക്കുന്നത്.

♣    ആകര്‍ഷകമായ പടങ്ങളുള്ള പുസ്തകങ്ങള്‍ കുട്ടികള്‍ക്കായി തെരഞ്ഞെടുക്കുക. ♣    വായിക്കാന്‍ അറിയാത്ത വാക്കുകള്‍ കൂട്ടിവായിച്ചു കൊ ടുത്ത് സഹായിക്കുക. ♣    പുതിയ വാക്ക് എഴുതിപ്പിക്കുക, പ്രധാന ആശയങ്ങള്‍ പറയിപ്പിക്കുക. ♣    പുതിയവാക്കുകള്‍ പഠിപ്പിക്കുന്നതില്‍ പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കുക. ♣    പുതിയ കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ അടയാളപ്പെടുത്താന്‍ അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ എഴുതിവയ്ക്കാന്‍ സഹായിക്കുക. ♣    വായനയില്‍ തെറ്റുപറ്റിയാല്‍ തിരുത്തിക്കൊടുക്കുക. ♣    ആവര്‍ത്തിച്ച്് ഉറക്കെ വായിക്കാന്‍ പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കുക ♣    ഒരു സ്ഥിരമായ സ്ഥലം വായനയ്ക്കായ് നല്കുക. ♣    സ്വസ്ഥമായിരുന്ന് വായിക്കാനുള്ള അന്തരീക്ഷം വീട്ടില്‍ സൃഷ്ടിക്കുക. ♣    യാത്ര പോകുമ്പോഴും ഒരു ചെറിയ ബുക്ക് കൈയില്‍ സൂക്ഷിക്കുക. ♣    പല ഭാഷകളിലെ ബുക്കുകള്‍ വായിക്കാന്‍ കൊടുക്കുക. ♣    വായിച്ച കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ ചുരുക്കി എഴുതാന്‍ പഠിപ്പിക്കുക.

വായന കുട്ടികളുടെ ഭാഷാപരിജ്ഞാനം വര്‍ദ്ധിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. പുതിയ ഉള്‍ക്കാഴ്ചകള്‍ അവര്‍ക്കു നല്കുന്നു. വായിക്കുന്ന കുട്ടികള്‍ കൂടുതല്‍ ചിന്തിക്കാനും വിശാലമായ ഭാവന വളര്‍ത്താനും, വാക്കുകളുടെ ശേഖരം വര്‍ദ്ധിപ്പിക്കാനും പ്രാപ്തരാകുന്നു. വായന ആസ്വാദിക്കുന്ന കുട്ടികള്‍ക്ക് ഏകാന്തത ശല്യമല്ല, വിരസതയല്ല അവര്‍ കൂടുതല്‍ ഏകാഗ്രതയിലേക്ക് വളരുന്നു. കുട്ടികള്‍ക്ക് ശ്രദ്ധിക്കാനുള്ള കഴിവു ലഭിക്കുന്നു. അവര്‍ അച്ചടക്കത്തോടെ ഇരിക്കാന്‍ പഠിക്കുന്നു. ഇത്തരത്തില്‍ ഇരിക്കാന്‍ പഠിക്കുന്ന കുട്ടികള്‍ ക്ഷമയോടെ പല കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ ചെയ്യുവാനും പഠിക്കുന്നു. വായന കുട്ടികളുടെ വീക്ഷണം വിശാലമാക്കുന്നു. പലതരത്തിലുള്ള പുസ്തകങ്ങള്‍ വായിക്കുന്ന കുട്ടികള്‍ അവര്‍ക്ക് ചുറ്റുമുള്ള ലോകത്ത് നടക്കുന്ന കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ അറിയുന്നതിനോടൊപ്പംതന്നെ കൂടുതല്‍ അറിവുനേടാനുള്ള ജിജ്ഞാസ വര്‍ദ്ധിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. വായന, വാക്കുകളുടെ ശേഖരം കൂട്ടുന്നതിനോടൊപ്പംതന്നെ കൂടുതല്‍ പഠിക്കണമെന്ന ആഗ്രഹവും കുട്ടികള്‍ക്കുണ്ടാക്കുന്നു. അനുദിനജീവിതത്തില്‍ ഉപയോഗിക്കാത്ത പുതിയ വാക്കുകള്‍ കുട്ടികള്‍ സ്വന്തമാക്കുന്നു. നന്നായി വായിക്കുന്ന കുട്ടികള്‍ സ്‌കൂളില്‍ നല്ല മാര്‍ക്ക് വാങ്ങുന്നു, നല്ല വിജയം കൈവരിക്കുന്നു.

Reading comprehension is a complex process that stems from the development of decoding and understanding the written form of a language. Reading development largely depends on the typological and orthographical features of a language. Hence, research investigating the impact of different writing systems on reading processes and acquisition is needed to inform reading models and teaching practices across language/learning contexts. Malayalam is a prominent Indic language, but has hardly been studied in reading research. Therefore, to stimulate such research, the present chapter explains the orthographical features of Malayalam, considering these in terms of cross-linguistic factors that are important for reading acquisition. The chapter then presents a review of the relevant studies in reading, focusing on akshara orthographies and those recognising metalinguistic awareness as an aspect of successful reading acquisition, particularly in multilingual contexts. The chapter ends by arguing that phoneme-based instructional strategies should be usefully applied to Malayalam, despite its akshara characteristics.

Who Becomes ‘Who’: Dalit Representations In Malayalam Cinema 

From the panoramic lens of cinema, various aspects of life and reality are often brought onscreen by the skilful weaving of the director and scriptwriter. This practice is enriching for the millions and trillions of audiences who are moved and reformed bit by bit; at least in the ideal speculation. In this practice of representation, the choice of ‘ what to ,’ ‘ what not to ,’ and ‘ how to ,’ is a matter of power and domination. Therefore, the range and deliverance of visual-audio combinations have not even been able to depict the ‘real,’ world in the experiential dimension. Of the many themes so far impacted by this seamless practice of selection is Dalit representation. The representation of Dalits in many film industries, including Malayalam, is relatively low.

Though there are many films portraying the Dalits and the issues they are facing in society, not many films exclusively deal with them. Rather than this, the Dalit theme is mostly relegated to a minor one which makes it insignificant and unworthy of discussion. Yet, in recent times numerous films dealing with these themes with the much-needed attention were produced and gave way to serious discourse on the situations surrounding them.

Kismath and the perils of inter-caste marriage

Though known for unity and harmony among different communities, in Kerala too, caste and religious differences can impact and destroy quiet living and peace. Kismath written and directed by Shanavas K. Bavakutty is a 2016 film that deals with the perils of inter-caste and inter-religious marriage and also evidently about the reaction of not just the community surrounding them but also the system. It follows the love story of a Muslim man, Irfan and an SC woman, Anita, both of whom decide to live together as mature citizens. They clearly understand that their families and society are not ready to accept them and, therefore, they seek the help of the system. Whereas the system is also one consisting of individuals from society who often hold the same prejudices. Hence, it becomes oppressive to the extent that there is nothing to trust and hold on to easily.

In the case of the couple, Irfan-Anita, it again becomes complicated as both of them are of different castes and different religions, in addition to the fact that Anita is older than Irfan by five years. All these factors make it difficult for the society to accept them at any cost. Anita is meanly treated by the police officer whom they approach as part of their only hope. More than the fact that both of them are mature and independent individuals capable of deciding for themselves, Anita’s Dalit position is seen as the main issue of society that is unwilling to accept them. The range of acceptance received for the film with its Dalit theme was well discussed among the audience. 

Kammatti Padam and loss of community

Another notable film was Kammatti Padam (2016) which exclusively dealt with the struggles of Dalit lives spanning many years, shedding light on how far they progressed materially and emotionally. Directed by Rajeev Ravi and written by P. Balachandran, the film talks about the land and its cultural and emotional significance for the marginalised Dalits. It takes a long time for the poor people to build up a community in any location and especially being on the marginalised side, they deem much importance to this home.

Kammatti Padam portrays this crisis faced by the Dalit community with the others in Kammatti Padam, a slum-like area on the outskirts of Ernakulam. Balan and Ganga, Dalit childhood friends of Krishna, an upper caste share a close bond with their land.

Yet, out of the craving for money, they evict their land for an upper-caste businessman; unknowingly erasing themselves. It is only after their wants are over, they understand their barren status and want to rebuild the community that is irretrievably lost. The theme was distinguished in that it depicted the pathetic condition of the Dalits who are forced to be landless and homeless for the dominant classes and the Dalits themselves who out of choice destroy their communities.

Land Struggles in Pada

Pada (2022) by Kamal K.M. is yet another film strongly advocating for the land rights of the marginalised sections, both tribals and Dalits. It is based on a real incident that took place in Palakkad, Kerala where the district collector was held as a hostage in the collectorate by four tribal activists. This act grew to attract the attention of many other activists and leaders to the plight of the Dalits and tribals who were forced to be evicted from the land where they built their homes. It was the amendment to the Adivasi Land Act 1975 that infuriated the Dalits and tribals to act and reclaim their land from the unjust interests of the outside parties and corrupt politicians. This act was a strong political statement that questioned the motives of the changing governments who always favored the affluent groups to possess the resourceful lands. This incident grabbed attention at the national level and became a symbol of what the common man could do to register their protest.

As a film, it placed the audience in a tight grip throughout and it reflects the craftsmanship of the director and scriptwriter. Even more, it helped the viewers to be reminded of a time when the oppressed powerfully voiced their needs. 

Jana Gana Mana and casteism in educational institutions

At a time, when the news makes rounds of Dalit and tribal students being abused and tortured in various top universities and institutions across the country, ‘ Jana Gana Mana ,’ (2022) created a strong wave as a kind of protest. Though the main focus of the film is religious and caste discrimination and media-produced truth, Dalit representation is underscored throughout. Vidya, a studious research scholar from the Dalit community is seen to be tortured by her upper caste supervisor to such an extent that she gives up on her dream. To him, it is their duty to torture them and create obstacles to prevent their growth. 

By looking at the various representations discussed so far, it is not possible to say all of them actively stood out and fought for the Dalit voice. There are various flaws in these representations as well since some of the characters were enacted and made hit by actors from the upper caste. It becomes political as the identity and power statement is given life by a person who has never experienced these discriminations at hand.

On the other side, if these characters were breathed life by Dalit actors, the depiction together with the acceptance showered by the audience could be considered as consent by the society at large. Though it is also true, a wide permanent change cannot be activated so soon. Besides this, many Dalit life-oriented films are actively made in Malayalam, especially when the last two decades are considered but the problem is the fact that these films mostly go unattended without the presence of a megastar. Take, for example, Puzhu (2022), it became noticeable due to the leading actors Mammootty and Parvathy Thiruvoth. Because of them, the film widely reached people creating discussions over current dalit oppressions even in the liberal spaces.

Re “ Tim Walz, Protect My Son as You Do Yours ,” by Tina Brown (Opinion guest essay, Aug. 24):

Thank you, Tina Brown, for expanding readers’ understanding of neurodivergent persons. As the proud father of a 14-year-old son with developmental disabilities, I, like Ms. Brown, recognized Tim Walz’s son, Gus, as “one of ours” — a sweet, sensitive-looking, neurodivergent person who appeared somewhat unsure of himself during his father’s nomination acceptance speech.

When Gus met his father’s declaration of love for him by standing up, pointing at the stage and shouting through tears “That’s my dad!,” my heart exploded.

My son’s third-grade teacher once asked his class of various neurodivergent children, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” He responded, “I just want to be a good dad.” I have never felt more recognized and honored in my life.

Neurotypical people have something important to learn from Gus Walz’s unfiltered love, my son’s thinking and Ms. Brown’s son’s (Georgie’s) matter-of-fact honesty. In our constant reading of others, we can miss the truth of our own experience.

Who knew that Tina Brown and I might ever have anything in common, let alone that we could share a gigantic part of our emotional makeup as parents of neurodivergent children. The cult of Trump has amply demonstrated what Ms. Brown, Gwen and Tim Walz, and countless other devoted parents like us already know: Too many of the cruel, tiny-minded bullies who mocked and stalked our kids starting in early childhood have grown into adults who are just like that.

National Portrait Gallery Announces Winner of the 2024 Director’s Essay Prize for Scholars in the Field of Portraiture

Laura Katzman Receives $3,000 and Will Present Lecture Oct. 15

The Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery has announced Laura Katzman, professor of art history at James Madison University, as the winner of its 2024 Director’s Essay Prize. Her essay, “Lorenzo Homar’s Cine Alba : An Intimate Portrait of North American Artists in Nineteen-Fifties Puerto Rico,” was chosen for its interdisciplinary contributions to the fields of American art, biography, history and cultural identity. The text was published in the book  La mirada en construcción: Ensayos sobre cultura visual (2022), which was edited by José Orlando Sued and René Rodríguez-Ramírez.

Founded in 2019, the Director’s Essay Prize fosters leading research in the field of visual biography and American portraiture. The 2024 prize was juried by PORTAL, the Portrait Gallery’s scholarly center. Its advisors include Martha S. Jones, the Society of Black Alumni Presidential Professor, professor of history and a professor at the SNF Agora Institute at Johns Hopkins University, and Julio Capó, associate professor of history at Florida International University.

“In mining numerous public and private archives, Katzman unveils new understandings and an astute analysis of the work, the artist and his subjects and their lives. In so doing, she offers a nuanced reading of the work and demonstrates how it reflects key social, political and cultural moments in Puerto Rican history and, especially, its place in cultural nationalism. Katzman’s engaging, beautifully written essay is a masterwork in interdisciplinary research and analysis, and the text will serve as an excellent model for future works on portraiture.”

Katzman was the Terra Foundation Visiting Professor at the Freie Universität Berlin from 2018 to 2019 and served as a postdoctoral fellow at the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Research and Scholars Center. An internationally recognized scholar of 20th-century documentary photography on the U.S. continent and in Puerto Rico, she curated the widely acclaimed retrospective “Ben Shahn, On Nonconformity” for the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid (2023–2024). She is the editor of The Museum of the Old Colony: An Art Installation by Pablo Delano , principal author of Re-viewing Documentary: The Photographic Life of Louise Rosskam, and co-author of the award-winning Ben Shahn’s New York: The Photography of Modern Times . Katzman’s current research examines a post-World War II photographic archive that U.S. artists created for the Puerto Rican government at a time of profound industrial transformation in the Caribbean nation and in the context of its complex colonial relations with the United States.

“The Director’s Essay Prize offers the exciting opportunity to bring wider attention to the extraordinary work of Lorenzo Homar and his collaborations with North American artists at a critical period in Cold War history—a fateful moment for Puerto Rico’s ambiguous political status, distinct cultural identities and long-standing struggles for self-determination.”

Katzman will deliver a lecture on her prize-winning essay , “Lorenzo Homar’s Cine Alba: An Intimate Portrait of North American Artists in Nineteen-Fifties Puerto Rico” Tuesday, Oct. 15, at 5:30 p.m. in the Nan Tucker McEvoy Auditorium at the National Portrait Gallery, Eighth and G Streets N.W., Washington, D.C.

The Director’s Essay Prize complements the Portrait Gallery’s Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition , a triennial juried contemporary art exhibition established in 2006. The prize is specifically dedicated to supporting the next wave of written scholarship on portraiture.
