Science (skill)

The Sims 3: University Life

Science is a skill introduced in The Sims 3: University Life . Science skill can be increased by reading any of the 3 skill books, by using the Science Research Station or the Group Science Project , by taking classes in the Science building, or by using scientific socials with others.

Having the Science skill will boost job performance in the Science and Medical careers. Sims with enough points in the skill will begin these careers at a higher level when accepting job offers.

Having the Science skill is also helpful when fishing , gardening , and collecting . Items that a scientific Sim acquires in these ways will have a chance to be higher quality. Samples can be gathered by analyzing minerals, plants, fish and insects. These samples can then be researched to gain even more scientific knowledge.

Interactions [ edit | edit source ]

The Group Science Project activities are: Study the Red Pad Tie Node, Interface with the Green Mind Melder Module, and Adjust the Blue Magnatomic Pulse Array. These experiments gives sims various moodlets and abilities:

Experiment Color of Beam Moodlet Notes
Picture Name Mood Time
Interface with the Green Mind Melder Module Green Hive Mind! No Mood Effect 6 Hours Sim gains skills faster
Study the Red Pad Tie Node Red Uninhibited +20 4 Hours Sim wants to streak
Adjust the Blue Magnatomic Pulse Array Blue Power Nap +10 2 Hours Everyone nearby knocked out, after 3 hours waking all motives are filled
All three experiments at the same time White Meteor Shower! +30 3 Hours On lot is raining moneybags, gems, metals and spacerocks and sometimes magic gnomes. Note that the player doesn't need all three Sims at the same time to activate this. Have one Sim gradually fill a light to one third of the machine and repeat with the other two. This way, the player can achieve this state more easily.

The Science Research Station activities are: Research Science, Gene Splicing Experiment, Horticulture Experiment, Clone from Sample, Research Sample, Herb Experiment, and Radiation Experiment. Experiments may fail or succeed:

Experiment Ingredients Failure Success Epic Success
Gene Splicing Experiment Seed Destroyed or decreased quality Changed from one seed into another seed Transformed into a Forbidden Fruit Seed
Horticulture Experiment Seed or coffee bean or plant Destroyed or decreased quality Increased quality Transformed into a perfect Empanada (food)
Herb Experiment Herbs Destroyed or decreased quality Increased quality Transmute into a Bottle of Super Spice
Radiation Experiment Bugs Destroyed Bug stays alive Transmute into a Plasma Bug
Resulting Item Use
Forbidden Fruit Seed Can grow Forbidden Fruit to become
Empanada Eat
Bottle of Super Spice Use this on food to add spice (foods quality increases) or on PlantSims to cure them
Plasma Bug Very expensive bug (§4,000)

Gardening (the sims 3).

  • Edit source

The Sims 3

Gardening is a skill in The Sims 3 . The skill is augmented by the Green Thumb trait , and the Super Green Thumb lifetime reward . It involves (as with gardening in real life and the previous Sims games) the planting, growing and harvesting of various plants that Sims can find within the game. Unlike the previous Sims games, The Sims 3 gardening has been much expanded upon, introducing many real-life plants and several fictional species such as the ' Life Fruit ', 'Flame Fruit', and ' Plasma Fruit '.

Some expansion packs include more varieties of plant collections. Some of the plants can be used as ingredients for Nectar Making , Mixology and Alchemy , with the key ingredients for Nectar Making being the grapes from Champs Les Sims . With Ambitions , Sims can register as a self-employed Gardener. Gardening can be profitable by selling the harvested produce from the inventory, supermarket , or consignment store .

Only teens and older can tend gardens. Children cannot learn the Gardening skill, but they can learn the Child Gardening hidden skill . Once a child grows up into a teenager, they will earn Gardening skills at the same level of their Child Gardening and Scouting hidden skills.

Once a Sim has maximized their Gardening skill, they will receive a certificate in the mailbox a few days later, along with a notification saying: "The Dillinger Diggers Guild congratulates you, [Sim name], for achieving the very highest level of excellence in bringing life forth from our fertile Earth. Please accept this handsomely framed certificate and display it with pride knowing others will see just how skilled you are."

Challenges [ ]

A Master Planter must plant 19 types of plant that can be planted in the game. Once you have mastered the varieties you will be able to reduce weed growth significantly on future plants.

Botanical Bosses must harvest at least 75 Perfect fruits and vegetables. After so many Perfect harvestables, the plants of Botanical Bosses almost never die from neglect.

Master Farmers have harvested at least 650 fruits and vegetables. The plants of Master Farmers remain watered and fertilized longer, meaning their gardens are more efficient.

  • Max Produce is the maximum produce the plant can bear before being barren.
  • Nectar Value is the value of the produce when used as a single nectar ingredient.

Quality & varieties [ ]

Harvested produce has a quality ranging from horrifying, putrid, foul, bad, normal, nice, very nice, great, excellent, outstanding, and perfect. Higher quality produce is worth more for selling and will have increased strength as fertilizer. The quality of the harvested produce roughly corresponds to the quality of the plants. Thus, an excellent apple tree will usually bear excellent apples, however there is a chance of harvesting higher quality produce.

Produce can be used for the following:

  • Cooking ingredients
  • Nectar Making ingredients [ TS3:WA ]
  • Mixology ingredients [ TS3:LN ]
  • Alchemy ingredients [ TS3:SN ]
  • Jam and preserve ingredients [ Store ]
  • Science samples [ TS3:UL ]
  • Fishing baits

Generally, plants are used for ingredients. Store plants are usually used to complement other premium contents:

  • Lemons are used to create lemonades from the lemonade stand. The lemonade stand is part of Humble Harvest Stands premium content.
  • Lemons and purple eggplants are ingredients of some of the pizzas from the wood fire oven. The wood fire oven is part of Monte Vista special premium content.
  • Plants from Bohemian Fruit and Nuts premium content are ingredients of most recipes for the Baker's Station premium content.

Additionally, produces can be used to create jams and preserves with Canning Station premium content.

Some plants also have their own unique variety, which makes them have other usages aside from ingredients.

Mushrooms [ ]

Mushrooms are plants that came from Supernatural . The common use of mushroom is for Alchemy ingredients. Some mushrooms are edible and can be used as a food ingredient, i.e. truffles, porcinis, and white caps; while the others are inedible. Collecting wild mushrooms is also part of the Collecting challenges. Collecting 7 of them will increase the quality of mushrooms grown. Harvested mushrooms don't count to the challenge.

Edible mushrooms:

Inedible mushrooms:

Herbs are plants that came from University Life . Herbs are related to Rebel social group . Herbs can be used as an addition to meal or herbal drink, burned in bonfire or fireplace , or eaten raw, which will give a moodlet and various certain effects. The moodlet time is based on how the herb is consumed: 8 hours if eaten raw, 5 hours if added to meal, 3 hours from herbal drink, and 2 hours from being burned. There's a 15% chance the herb will cause herb nausea when consumed, which will increase or decrease based on the quality of the herb.

Below is the list of herbs and its effects:

  • Peppermint - Gives a simple positive status effect moodlet giving a simple mood boost.
  • Chamomile - Increases social group influence gain by 15%
  • Cinnamon - May increase the effect of romantic interactions and the strength of the moodlets gained from romantic interactions is increased
  • Greenleaf - Increases weight loss rate by 20%
  • Basil - Increases performance gain by 5% and opportunity reward by 10%
  • Bumbleleaf - Extends the "On Fire" moodlet to 4 hours, diminishes the risk the Sim gets caught while cheating in University, or performing anything attracting law enforcement, such as unsolicitated Street art , and possibly stealing or sneaking away for teens
  • Buzzberry - Increases Athletic skill gain by 15%
  • Ginseng - May decrease energy need decay
  • Lavender - Increases energy need gain by 10%
  • Licorice - Decreases hunger need decay by 30%
  • Wonderpetal - Increases academic performance gain by 10%
  • Sweet Grass - Removes "Nauseous", "Visceroidal Nausea", "Virtually Nauseous", "Seasick", "Herb Nausea", and "Buzz Crashed" moodlets. Does not remove "Liquid Crash" and "Food Poisoning" moodlets, however.

Coffee beans [ ]

Coffee beans are plants that came from University Life . Coffee beans can be consumed raw or as coffee drink from the barista bar. Coffee beans cannot be used as any ingredients or for the espresso maker. Consuming coffee bean will give various moodlets, which work like "Buzzed" moodlet from drinking coffee, which will temporarily override "Sleepy", "Tired", and "Exhausted" moodlets, as well as getting "Buzz Crashed" when the effect expires.

Below is the list of coffee beans:

  • Midnight Bean
  • Red Berry Bean
  • Cortado Bean

Crystal flowers [ ]

Crystal flowers are plants that came from Into the Future . The main use of crystal flowers is as ingredients to create trait chips for plumbots . A crystal flower has 5 types of emotional charges. The common emotional charge is neutral. Sims can charge a crystal flower so the emotional charge will turn into either kindness, laughter, love, or rage. After that, they must charge the flower regularly, or the emotional charge will lose its power and eventually turn back into neutral. Sims can also neutralize the flower to change the emotional charge to neutral instantly.

When the flowers are harvested, Sims can harness the flower or imbue it to other Sims. When harnessed, the flower will grant a special moodlet to the user. Only non-neutral flowers can be harnessed.

Collection Helper refers to them as Crystal Plants .

Money tree [ ]

Money-tree-ts3

Money trees

Money tree is a special tree that has money bill leaves and grows money bags. Sims can harvest the money bags and exchange them for money. Sims can receive the seed from certain opportunities, fishing , analyzing an unknown special seed, and so on.

If tended well, money trees will never die. However, should it be neglected too long and perish, it will explode and leave many bills behind.

Special plants [ ]

The following plants have the rarity of special. Sims can plant these seeds after they've completed certain opportunities . Completing the Uncommonly Good opportunity will grant the ability to plant cheeses and eggs. Completing the Outstandingly Rare opportunity will grant the ability to plant steaks and patties. Completing The Omnificent Plant grants the ability to plant omni plant and order its seed from the mailbox. [6] These opportunities can only be received in order, but not necessarily consecutively. This is because The Omnificent Plant requires Sims to plant outstanding steaks and Outstandingly Rare requires Sims to plant excellent cheeses.

Omni plant is a special plant which can be used to replicate many things. The plant can be fed with items, and once the plant is on its harvest state, Sims can harvest whatever the plant was fed with. The following are items that can be fed to the omni plant:

  • Books (general, fishing, skill, toddler, written, and sheet music)
  • Ingredients (harvestable produce, fish, and grocery ingredients)
  • Rubber duckies
  • Teddy bears
  • Toy box toys

There are several things to consider about the items that can be fed to:

  • Cooking recipes, alchemy recipes, and comic books cannot be fed to omni plants. This means that the players cannot exploit Ambrosia recipe book worth §12,000.
  • Not all plants are considered as ingredients. Death flowers , forbidden fruit , and crystal flowers cannot be fed to omni plants in particular.
  • Inedible plants may still be considered as ingredients, such as kelp, inedible mushrooms, mandrake root, and wolfsbane flower.
  • Imaginary friend doll is considered as a teddy bear, but cannot be fed to omni plants nonetheless.

Fertilizer [ ]

Fertilizer can be used to increase the plant speed growth. Fertilizer does not affect the quality of the plant or produce. Most ingredients can be used to fertilize plants, as well as horse fertilizer from the horse stall. Below is the list of fertilizers, the time the effect lasts, and the grade.

Ts3 sprinkler area

Sprinkler area of effect.

  • Sims can use a sprinkler to water plants in a 5x5 area. It can be turned on and run indefinitely. Sims can upgrade the sprinkler with Auto-Water so it will run between 4 AM and 7 AM, but it has to be turned off first.
  • Science skill helps aid Sims with gardening. The higher a Sim's Science skill is, the more chance they will harvest extra produce, boost the harvested produce quality, and increase the seed quality. [ TS3:UL ]
  • The harvester can be used to harvest multiple plants at once.
  • Selling the produce in the supermarket is worth 10% higher than selling from inventory, and even more if sold in consignment store . [ TS3:A ]
  • Sims can plant indoors with the planter bowls from Supernatural or soil rugs from Into the Future .
  • Unicorns and fairies can use their abilities to grow up the plants one level higher, up to their harvestable state.
  • The Green Thumb trait increases the quality of plant produce when they plant a seed or harvest produce.
  • The Loves the Outdoors trait will create a positive moodlet when Sim is outdoors.
  • The Eco-friendly trait will create a positive moodlet when gardening.
  • The Gatherer trait increases the quality of produce harvested from seeds the Sim plants.
  • SwiftGro Gardening Station ( Store link ), which can be used to identify unknown seeds, water plants instantly, talk to plants, and use composter to fertilize the plants.
  • Plants Vs. Zombies™ Sunflower ( Store link ), which produces sun that can be used as an excellent-quality fertilizer.
  • Grandpa's Grove Tractor ( Store link ), a set of a tractor and track pieces, which can be used to tend, water, fertilize, and harvest a large amount of plants at once, so long as the plants are within the range of the track, approximately 8 tiles away.
  • Plants will turn to dead state if they are neglected from wilting state. Sims with Green Thumb can revive plants with 70% chance of success, while failure attempt will destroy the plant. [ clarification needed ] Money trees cannot be revived as they'll explode upon their death.
  • Plants will turn to barren state once they reach their maximum amount of produce. Barren plants cannot be revived.
  • Fertilizers and weeds don't affect the plant quality. They only affect the growth time of the plant: fertilizer shortens the time, while the weeds increases the time.
  • Plants are immune from meteor impact, but the produce will be destroyed. [ TS3:A ]
  • Banana [ TS3:ST ] and corn [ Store ] don't have proper plant mesh. Instead of growing on a banana palm tree like in The Sims 2: Castaway and a corn stalk, they grow on a generic fruit tree and a staked bush, respectively.
  • Watch out for zombies as they will eat the plants and set them to dead state. Keep the plants indoor to keep them away from zombies. Consider enclosing gardens with fences and lock the gate to only the household - this will keep the zombies out. Plant the garden a few squares away from the house to avoid zombies spawning in the garden. [ TS3:SN ]
  • Like zombies, horses and deer will also autonomously eat garden plants. Fencing off the garden and locking the gate will prevent them from getting in. [ TS3:P ]
  • During and near winter , plants will remain dormant until it's mid-spring. During the dormant period, Sims cannot tend the garden. Planting indoors will prevent plants from getting dormant. It will also change the dormant state to normal when the plant is moved indoors, but only after 4 AM or the next time the game is loaded. [ TS3:S ]
  • There is a glitch that prevents Sims from ordering Omni Plant seeds via mailbox normally after patch 1.17 causing the Sim's action queue to be automatically dropped when they reach the mailbox. There is a temporary workaround for the Sim to bypass the glitch and order the Omni Plant seed via mailbox normally.
  • There is a glitch with Gardening after installing Supernatural . Sims' action will be dropped shortly when they are interacting with the plants. The plants will remain in the harvestable state after Sims harvest them instead of going back to mature state, causing the plants to be stuck and unable to produce again. The bug is caused due to the new collection journal feature introduced in this pack. This bug only occurs to Sims who have had history in Collecting; newly-made Sims will not experience this bug. The bug is fixed in Twallan's Overwatch mod.
  • The cucumber plant from Canning Station premium content is missing translation strings for all languages except English. This prevents the game from loading the plant data properly, and causes the plant not to grow at all. There is a mod that includes all the missing strings, although the strings are all in English.
  • Kelp plants can only be harvested underwater at diving areas , despite the plants themselves being easily placeable on land.

Carl's The Sims 3 Gardening Guide: Learn about Fertilizer

Path to the perfect garden.

This Sims 3 Guide was originally written for the PC and Mac versions of the game, but also will help owners of the console versions - PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii. Please remember some info or numbers may have changed.

How to Use/Get Fertilizer in The Sims 3

How Plants and Fertilizer Work In order to understand Fertilizer, you need to understand how plants evolve in the Sims 3. When your Sim plants a seed and it grows to maturity to begin producing fruit, the fruit can be replanted. Fruit that is higher quality being planted in the ground results in a better starting plant. Using fertilizer can boost the quality of vegetables and fruit that come from your Sims' garden.

All items like fruit and fish have quality ratings in the Sims 3. They go from bad to Perfect. Higher quality items are worth more, plain and simple. Higher rated items also deliver better fertilizing effects, resulting in stronger fertilizing effects for your plants.

Fertilize your garden, and weed it regularly to keep plants healthy and producing great crops.

The patch released with The Sims 3 World Adventures , which also affects the game with no expansion installed introduces a new feature: the ability to fertilize all the plants in your garden with just a couple clicks. Your Sim will automatically go about using the best fertilizers on hand to take care of the garden. Try to get rid of high-value items that can be used as fertilizer like vampire fish before you do this.

How does fertilizer work in the Sims 3? Does it affect how fast plants grow, or produce quality?

I decided to try to definitively answer how Fertilizer works in the Sims 3 after a recent comment on the Carl's Sims 3 Guide thread: here Although this section of my fertilizer guide is long, if you want to learn a few things, bear with me. I've highlighted facts I learned from my tests for those of you who want to skip a big read.

Since I will be talking a bit about quality in this article, I will post a scale of (relevent) quality: Nice, Very Nice, Great, Excellent, Outstanding, Perfect

Fertilizing Plants in the Sims 3 can boost their growth rate and the quality of produce they create

MeestorMark made an interesting point about growth rate. I hadn't done truly extensive testing, and he had proven me wrong. I decided to fix this by doing several experiments. As a control, I made myself a level 10 gardener with no green thumb. He grew a patch of perfect life fruit to use for testing, and raised fishing to get plenty of perfect vampire fish. I wanted to see if life fruit and vampire fish are truly identical (aside from duration).

I planted four patches of plants. Each patch contained the same plants: Grapes, Garlic, Lime Tree, Tomato, Life Fruit. A representative sample of the types of plants in the game. I know from previous testing that garlic can receive a boost to growth rate from perfect vampire fish, so I'm curious why Lobster didn't cause Lime trees to grow faster. Lobster does cause grape vines to grow faster. Thus the following setup: I will have twenty plants in the garden. One row will be unfertilized, the next will be fertilized with store-bought lobster, then a row with Perfect Vampire Fish and finally Perfect Life fruit.

The first day brings new information: Tomatoes and other 4 day plants always grow at the same rate, whether they are fertilized or not . Check the plant list to see what plants are grown in four days. The reasoning is simple. There are five stages of plant development: seed, sprout, growing, mature, harvest. Since the 4 day plants all start at seed, the next four steps brings them to harvest in 4 days. There are no stages to crunch.

The grapes that are unfertilized are the only ones not sprouted. The two top-quality fertilizers are managing to sprout the lime tree, while lobster does not. Garlic is still in seed form for all the plants. This produces our second gardening fact: Plants must have a certain minimum strength fertilizer to achieve an improved growth rate . Based on the plant, of course. Thus why the grapes do so well, while lime trees are harder to hurry. This means that higher quality plants require a bigger kick to get benefit from fertilizer. Fertilizers rated as Excellent or Outstanding should do the trick.

The next fact arrives after the plants are done growing: Fertilizer can have a huge effect on growth rate on some plants, while offering a smaller benefit on others . Lime trees seemed to benefit heavily, at three or four days sooner, while garlic was only two days shaved off.

From these experiences, I also arrive at the conclusion that fertilizer does not improve the base quality of the parent plant . That great tomato plant will still be a great tomato plant the day it dies. The only exception seems to be the money tree, which evolves this way as they are nearly immortal.

Why is this highly significant? If you don't care about the growth-rate boost, or your plants are all four day plants, don't worry about fertilizing until you're ready to start harvesting. The plant, when fertilized, will begin producing higher quality produce just as well as the one fertilized since it was planted.

At the first harvest , I learned another fact: Even high-grade fertilizer will only reliably boost harvested produce by one quality level . Whether the lobster or life fruit, I only saw improvements of one level most of the time when harvesting. Since lower quality plants can get that 'kick' from being fertilized with something lower price like store-bought lobster, you can get by early on using store ingredients. There is a small chance that the produce can go up by more than one level, however, it is the exception. Still, the chance for this to happen does correlate to the quality of the fertilizer. For it to trigger, it seems to need perfect life fruit (or equivalent).

Another harvesting fact: High Grade fertilizer will reduce the time it takes for a plant to grow harvestables . All the plants that usually take three days fall to two, and plants which used to produce every two days now produce every day.

Green Thumb is a must if you want to take gardening in the Sims 3 seriously . It does not affect the plant quality after planted. I gave my farmer a mid-life crisis by cheating and gave him green thumb. It does however bestow one more quality level increase to the harvestables. This can allow you to skip an entire extra generation of plants on the way to perfect. Additionally, they can Talk to Plants which can boost the quality of harvestables by one level.

Super Green Thumb will give your plant quality a boost when you plant a seed . If a level 10 gardener usually gets 'Great' plants out of Nice tomatoes, they would instead get Excellent plants. With perfect life fruit and the green thumb trait to boost even further, that Nice tomato plant will be growing perfect tomatoes.

The last fertilizer info I'd like to provide is that Life Fruit and Garlic are by far the best fertilizers in the Sims 3 . Why? They are both outstanding level fertilizer (at perfect quality), and last a full three days longer than vampire fish (also highly potent). At 6 days, with the quality bonus of 2 days bestowed by Perfect (great, excellent and outstanding receive 1), the fertilizer will last 8 days. Add to that master farmer's bonus of 1 day (the challenge to harvest 650 produce), and we arrive at 9 days fertilized. Long enough to grow almost any plant from seed to maturity.

So, vampire fish does the same thing, but lasts a shorter amount of time. Unfortunately, vampire fish can be worth 6 or more times a life fruit. Angel fish are also highly potent, but should be used for fishing death fish. That's throwing away more money than using vampire fish, by far.
