However, the modern newspaper as we know it today emerged in the 15th century with the invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg.

The 19th century witnessed a significant transformation in the newspaper industry with the introduction of new printing techniques, such as the rotary press and linotype machines, which allowed for faster and more efficient production. This period also saw the rise of investigative journalism, with newspapers playing a crucial role in exposing societal injustices and holding authorities accountable.

The 20th century brought about further innovations, including the use of photographs, color printing, and the integration of radio and television news broadcasts. The advent of the internet and digital technologies in the late 20th century revolutionized the newspaper industry once again, leading to the emergence of online editions, multimedia content, and new business models.

For some, it might be politics; for some, it might be sports; while for others, it might be technology. Though the number of people subscribing to printed newspapers is reducing day by day, there are still some who prefer reading them rather than the digital versions of the news on their personal phones or laptops.

Due to the severe scarcity and cost of paper, print media has pushed people to switch to reading digital news. The internet’s presence has made things easier. We can learn about the state of the planet simply by pressing a button. We may need to know and understand weather conditions a number of times. Previously, newspapers would bring this to us. We may now check the news on our gadgets to learn about current weather conditions throughout the world. News is also broadcasted on radio and television in live and recorded forms.

Cultivating the habit of reading a newspaper would prove beneficial in not just updating your knowledge about everything that is happening around the world but also in helping you improve your vocabulary and language on the whole.

Newspapers keep people informed about what is happening around the world. Major media companies publish newspapers. The news that is broadcast on television every day is the news that is printed the next day. Newspapers were initially widely circulated in Rome on a yearly basis. They largely discussed the Han Dynasty’s whereabouts. The information was written on stone tablets. Due to the high cost of publishing the news on a daily basis, an annual publication was started. As a result, the first newspaper took the form of a stone tablet. Its beginnings can be traced all the way back to the eighth century A.D.

Today’s newspapers provide all kinds of information like sports, national, state, international, political, social, economic, entertainment, etc. So, newspapers can be said to be a medium to learn all that is happening or has happened in and around the world. Reading newspapers every day has a lot of benefits, two of them being – it improves your general knowledge and helps you develop your vocabulary.

Newspapers have their own importance in the world. Newspaper publishing companies have now built applications or websites that allow users all over the world to access them. Current events and general knowledge can be learned by reading instructive articles in newspapers on a daily basis. There are a number of popular English newspapers published in India. Some of them are The Hindu, Hindustan Times, The Indian Express and The Times of India. Each newspaper has a different style of presentation though they speak about the same events/happenings from around the world.

Now, what interests a person; why do they read newspapers? There are people who feel their morning tea/coffee is incomplete without a newspaper. In addition to all the news from around the world, a newspaper also includes a variety of puzzles, comics and riddles. Supplements with such miscellaneous articles, stories and puzzles interest many. There are also supplements which focus solely on the economic developments, opportunities for work and study, what’s new in cinema and so on. Youngsters and kids seem to love these more than the main newspaper.

What most of us don’t really think about is the time and effort put into publishing a newspaper every single day. It is due to the relentless work of writers, journalists, news reporters, editors and the printing presses that we have been able to receive newspapers first thing in the morning, without fail.

How do we write a paragraph on newspapers?

In order to write a paragraph on newspapers, we need to add information like the importance of reading the newspaper, what one can expect in a newspaper, what might interest each reader, how it helps the individual and so on.

How important are newspapers in our life?

There are a huge number of people who cannot start their days without reading newspapers. Newspapers give us information about all the events happening around the world and help us stay up-to-date.

Introductory essay

Written by the educators who created Covering World News, a brief look at the key facts, tough questions and big ideas in their field. Begin this TED Study with a fascinating read that gives context and clarity to the material.

At the newsstand, on our smartphones and while watching the evening news, we learn about faraway people and places from the journalists, stringers and correspondents who work for news agencies and other media outlets around the globe. Global news is everywhere — from the front page news read by a New Yorker on Madison Avenue to the government radio station broadcasting in Pyongyang.

However, it would be a mistake to consider this a completely new phenomenon or to overstate its pervasiveness. Many people tend to think that global news is both a recent phenomenon and one that we can credit to advances in technology. If we think of 'news' in terms of newspaper articles or television reporting, then news is only as old as the technologies of press and video, and dates back to the first newsletters that circulated in Europe in the 17th century.

But in reality, humans have shared information about current affairs within and across borders for thousands of years, starting with the news networks of the ancient Phoenicians. The historical record also describes merchants sharing political news along ancient trade routes, minstrels and other traveling artists whose fictional performances also carried information about social change, and criers in medieval town squares.

If news is not a product of modern technologies, it's nevertheless true that technological change has had a dramatic impact on how news is made and consumed: where once we had printed newsletters distributed twice a day, now we have Twitter feeds refreshed twice a minute, and carrying information from an ever-widening array of sources. We live, as media critics like Marshall McLuhan have argued, in a global village.

The trouble with this vision of 'global news' is that it's not nearly as complete as we imagine it to be. According to the World Bank, of the world's seven billion people, only 80% have access to electricity (or the gadgets like computer and televisions that depend on it), 75% have access to mobile phones, and a meager 35% to the Internet. Most people on the planet aren't connected to what we think of as the 'global media' at all. As Global Voices founder Ethan Zuckerman points out in his TED Talk, "There are parts of the world that are very, very well connected, [but] the world isn't even close to flat. It's extremely lumpy."

Just as critically, the content that makes up the 'global media' is still heavily focused on a few key centers of power. In her TED Talk, Public Radio International's Alisa Miller shares a powerful map of the news consumed by American audiences in 2008: most of it focused on the U.S., and to a lesser extent, on countries with which the U.S. has military ties. Ethan Zuckerman points out that this lack of global coverage is pervasive, whether it's at elite news outlets like The New York Times or on crowdsourced digital information platforms like Wikipedia.

Moreover, Zuckerman argues, it's not just about the stories that get made — it's about what stories we choose to listen to. Thirty years ago, Benedict Anderson made waves when he argued that political structures (like states) depend upon a set of shared values, the 'imagined community,' and that the media plays a key role in creating those values. Zuckerman, however, argues that in today's world the disconnect between what we imagine to be our community, and the community we actually live in, is a major source of global media inequality. We connect to the Internet, with its technological capacity to link up the whole world, and imagine that we live in a global village. But in practice, we spend most of our time reading news shared by our Facebook friends, whose lives and interests are close to our own. Zuckerman calls this 'imagined cosmopolitanism.'

Compounding the problem, the stories we do attend to can be heavily distorted, reducing whole countries or societies to a single stereotype or image. As author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie explains in her TED Talk about the 'single story,' when all the tales we hear about a country follow the same pattern, we begin to imagine that this pattern is all there is know. The 'single story' can affect all of us, rich and poor: Adichie talks of her own misconceptions about Nigeria's rural poor, of her surprise at encountering the diversity of life in Mexico, and of her college roommate's reductive vision of Africa as poor and underdeveloped. The difference, she argues, is that there are simply more stories out there about powerful countries than about less powerful ones, and that makes it harder for us to reduce those societies to 'single stories' in our minds.

What can we do?

First, we can tell different stories about the places that are prone to reduction. In her TED Talk, Yemeni newspaper editor Nadia Al-Sakkaf takes us to the Yemen she lives in — where terrorism and political upheaval are real problems, but far from the whole picture. Moreover, in her account, each image can tell many stories. A woman with a veiled face can represent the role of fundamentalist Islam in Yemeni society, but she argues that a look behind the veil shows us that many of these women are holding down jobs and earning income, and in so doing, changing their role within their own families and in Yemeni society more broadly.

Second, we can find ways to invest in journalism. As Alisa Miller argues, a major obstacle to a truly global news media is the cost of production, of keeping bureaus in every country and paying for journalists to produce deep, investigative stories. The great paradox of media economics in the digital age is that the Internet makes it possible for us to consume more content, but falling advertising revenues means that each piece of content must cost a little less to produce. That pushes news outlets, even wealthy ones, in the direction of gossip and regurgitated press releases that can be produced by a reporter who hasn't left her desk.

One way to break this cycle, Ethan Zuckerman argues, is to make small and targeted investments in local journalists in the developing world. He describes a blogger training program in Madagascar that became a newsroom overnight when world media outlets needed verified content from a country undergoing revolution. He highlights the critical work of professional curators like Amira Al Hussaini at Global Voices or Andy Carvin at the Associated Press.

At the heart of these recommendations is a shift in the way we understand the mission of journalists — or rather, a return to an old way of thinking about news.

Right up until the early 20th century, all journalists were assumed to be opinion writers. Reporters went places to report, made up their own minds about a topic, and wrote an account that included not only facts, but an argument for what position readers at home should take and what political actions might follow. George Orwell's colorful and opinionated essays from South East Asia, for example, were published as reportage.

Then the Cold War started, and in the democratic West, journalists began to strive for objective impartiality, to distinguish their work from the obvious, state-sponsored propaganda of the Soviet bloc. Many critics at the time questioned whether 'true' objectivity was possible, but no major western news organization disputed that it was the ideal.

Today, we're seeing a return to the older understanding of journalism, towards an acceptance that even independent reporting carries a viewpoint, shaped by the people who produce it. Moreover, contemporary journalists are increasingly coming to see this viewpoint as a strength rather than as a weakness, and using social media to be more transparent to readers about the values they bring to stories. New York University's Jay Rosen, for example, has argued powerfully that the 'view from nowhere' advocated by 20th century western reporters is dangerous because it can lead journalists to treat 'both sides' of a story equally even when one side is telling objective falsehoods or committing crimes.

Many of the speakers in Covering World News describe their journalism — whether it is Global Voices or the Yemen Times — as having an explicit moral and political mission to change our perceptions of under-covered regions of the world.

But no speaker is more passionate on this subject than TED speaker and photojournalist James Nachtwey, who credits the activist context of the 1960s for inspiring him to enter journalism, using photography to "channel anger" into a force for social change. Nachtwey's work has brought him, at times, into partnership with non-profit aid organizations, an alliance that is increasingly common in today's media world but would surely not have fit within the 'objective' media of a half-century ago. Nachtwey sees himself as a 'witness' whose place in the story is not to be invisible, but to channel his own humane outrage at war or social deprivation in order to drive social and political change: in one case, a story he produced prompted the creation of a non-profit organization to collect donations from readers.

This kind of work is a form of 'bridge building,' a theme that emerges in many of our talks. For while there may not be one 'global media' that includes all communities equally and reaches all parts of the globe, there are many individuals whose skills and backgrounds enable them to go between the connected and less connected pockets of the world, bridging gaps and contributing to mutual understanding. That, perhaps, is the way forward for international journalism.

Let's begin our study with Public Radio International CEO Alisa Miller, an ardent advocate for a global perspective in news programming. In her TEDTalk "The news about the news," Miller shares some eye-opening statistics about the quantity and quality of recent foreign reporting by American mainstream media organizations.

Lebanon: Nine dead and 2,750 wounded after Hezbollah pagers explode

People gather outside a hospital, after hundreds were seriously wounded by exploding communications devices, in Beirut, Lebanon on 17 September 2024 (Reuters/Mohamed Azakir)

At least nine people have been killed and 2, 750 wounded in Lebanon  on Tuesday after pagers used by Hezbollah  exploded, in an extraordinary attack that the movement and Lebanese government blamed on Israel.

Hezbollah said "mysterious explosions" hit pagers across "various Hezbollah units and institutions" and that Israel would get "its fair punishment" in response.

Among the dead was a 10-year-old girl who was killed in eastern Lebanon's Bekaa Valley when the pager of her father, who is a Hezbollah member, exploded.

The son of a Hezbollah MP was also reportedly among those killed.

A Lebanese official, speaking anonymously as he was unauthorised to talk to the media, told Middle East Eye that he suspected that Israeli authorities penetrated the pagers in order to "provoke a war".

According to Syrian and Iranian media, Hezbollah members were also wounded and taken to hospital in Syria, where they have been supporting the government of Bashar al-Assad.

Mojtaba Amani, Iranian ambassador to Lebanon, was among those wounded. Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was unharmed, his group said.

Chaos at Beirut's hospitals

People covered in blood were seen staggering on the streets of Beirut immediately after the blasts, attended by passers-by.

Ambulances rushed the victims to the capital's hospitals, though several of them quickly reached capacity.

In Beirut's southern suburbs, an area commonly known as Dahiyeh where many Hezbollah supporters and members live, emergency medical tents were erected to treat patients.

Outside the Rafic Hariri University Hospital in southern Beirut, medical staff placed emergency beds outside the entrance to receive the wounded as quickly as possible.

Members of the public also gathered at hospitals, responding to calls for blood donations.

"I am still trying to understand what happened. I am just waiting for my husband to get out of the emergency room," a woman outside Hotel-Dieu de France hospital, who asked to remain anonymous, told MEE.

Onlookers were reprimanded for taking photographs of the wounded Hezbollah members.

'Groundbreaking' attack

A Hezbollah official told the WSJ that hundreds of fighters had such devices, and said that malware may have caused the pagers to heat up and explode. Some people felt the pagers heat up and threw them away before they detonated, the official added.

It is not yet clear how the pagers were made to explode. Some have speculated that explosives were somehow placed inside the devices. Israel has not commented on the attack or the accusation that it was responsible.

Since the 7 October Hamas-led attack on Israel and the ensuing war on Gaza began, Hezbollah and the Israeli military have been engaged in exchanges of fire. The fighting has killed hundreds of Lebanese, mostly Hezbollah fighters, and dozens of Israelis.

The Lebanese movement, which is the strongest non-state military power in the world, says it is attacking Israel in solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza and will stop fighting if the Israeli government agrees to a ceasefire with Hamas. Israel has repeatedly threatened to invade Lebanon in response to Hezbollah's attacks.

Earlier on Tuesday, Israel's Shin Bet internal security service said it had foiled a Hezbollah plot to kill a former Israeli defence official using a remotely detonated explosive.

Military analyst Mustafa Asaad described the pager attack as a "groundbreaking method" using "state of the art" technology.

He told MEE that Israel appeared to have broken into Hezbollah's "command and communications networks, identified operatives one by one, analysed their movements, and then directed a form of kinetic attack over the entire broadband".

Asaad was sceptical that the pagers were booby-trapped, saying such a scheme would be too simple and easily detected on delivery.

A man watches a video, published on social media, showing a wounded man after explosions hit Hezbollah pagers (Joseph Eid/AFP)

Wary that Israel's technologically savvy military and intelligence services could infiltrate its communications, Hezbollah has increasingly relied on more rudimentary devices and methods, like pagers and couriers.

In February, Nasrallah urged his followers to beware of smartphones and social media.

According to Asaad, "those targeted so far appear to be operatives in the security branch, counterintelligence, field operatives and higher echelon leadership levels".

"This means that the entire communication platform has been hacked and broken through, and one could only imagine since how long," he said.

"All in all, this is a severe blow to Hezbollah and this means that the entire structure has now been compromised. You cannot replace entire security units overnight and you cannot find replacements that easy and train them during an all-out war."

Ragip Soylu contributed to this report from Ankara, Turkey.

China’s Domestic Politics and Editorial Control over Foreign News Coverage in the People’s Daily, 1993–2022

Under Xi Jinping, China has become more assertive in its foreign policy and positioned itself as a champion of globalization. Yet foreign news coverage in China’s official media during Xi's administration declined compared to during the administrations of his predecessors. In “China’s Domestic Politics and Editorial Control over Foreign News Coverage in the People’s Daily , 1993–2022,” Jianbing Li, Jiakun Jack Zhang, Duoji Jiang, and Weifeng Zhong show that China’s shift in propaganda strategies is less about external interests and more about domestic policy concerns.

A Shift in Propaganda Strategies

The People’s Daily is the official newspaper of the Chinese Communist Party and serves as the Party’s chief mouthpiece and instrument of propaganda. The paper combines the functions of news reporting and editorial commentary, which are traditionally separate in Western media outlets. As Chinese leaders have consolidated power, they have exerted greater control over the newspaper’s content, printing less objective “news” in favor of more subjective “editorial” pieces.

Using advanced natural language processing techniques, the authors have analyzed foreign coverage in more than one million articles published in the People’s Daily between 1987 and 2022. They find that the Chinese public is hearing less about America, even as China becomes a more active player on the world stage and features more prominently in US media.

What Explains the Shift? What Dangers Does It Pose?

The strategic reduction in foreign news coverage in the People's Daily is a consequence of Chinese leaders’ attempts to consolidate power. Chinese leaders are allocating more editorial space to promote their foreign policy visions and are thereby squeezing out conventional foreign news coverage. This development risks making diplomacy more difficult and conflict more likely.

  • China has been positioning itself to exert substantial influence on international affairs by elevating the importance of foreign policy within its overarching political agenda.
  • The coverage of foreign affairs shapes both public and elite opinions on international relations. The risk of miscalculations and misperceptions in China’s dealing with foreign nations increases when the information available to the Chinese public about the outside world becomes less objective and less accessible.
  • The fact that the country’s state-controlled newspaper is reporting less foreign news does not mean China is becoming more inward-focused. Rather it means that the Chinese president is further consolidating his power at home and prioritizing domestic control over foreign reporting.

Sean 'Diddy' Combs arrest live updates: 'Freak offs' at center of sex trafficking, racketeering charges

What to know about combs' arrest.

  • Music mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs was arrested yesterday at the Park Hyatt hotel on West 57th Street, a representative said.
  • In a federal indictment unsealed today, Combs was charged with racketeering, sex trafficking and transportation to engage in prostitution. The charges are tied to "freak offs," coerced sex acts that Combs allegedly orchestrated and recorded.
  • An attorney for Combs said today he plans to plead not guilty and "will fight this with all of his energy."
  • Combs has faced a wave of lawsuits — one as recent as last week — accusing him of sexual assault and misconduct in the past year. He has denied any wrongdoing.

Combs allegedly has history of coercing witnesses, government says

english essay news paper

David K. Li

Federal prosecutors argued that Combs can't be set free ahead of trial because he allegedly has a long history of tampering with witnesses.

Shortly after a sex abuse lawsuit was filed against him in November 2023, Combs "made multiple calls to another victim of his sexual abuse and recorded certain of those calls" while asking for that victim’s "support and 'friendship,'” prosecutors said in their letter asking to deny Combs bail.

Combs, in that call, "attempted to convince the victim that she had willingly engaged in acts constituting sexual abuse," prosecutors continued.

"Even more concerning, since learning about the criminal investigation, including following the execution of the search warrants at his residences, Combs contacted other witnesses on multiple occasions, including other witnesses who had received grand jury subpoenas."

One 'freak off' cost Combs $46,000, prosecutors say

Money was no object when it came to Combs' desires in highly orchestrated sex acts known as "freak offs," the government said.

"The defendant arranged Freak Offs with the assistance of members and associates of the Enterprise, including employees of his business, and the hotel rooms where they were staged often sustained significant damages," according to a prosecution memo seeking to deny Combs bail.

In one such 2012 incident, held inside a Manhattan hotel, Combs had to pay more than "$46,000 to cover damages to a penthouse room following a Freak Off," the prosecution said.

Combs accused of arson, prosecutors detail Molotov cocktail attack on car

In addition to a long list of alleged sex crimes, prosecutors accused Sean "Diddy" Combs of arson in the racketeering conspiracy charge against him.

While U.S. Attorney Damian Williams declined to elaborate on specifics of the the alleged arson, the act might be detailed in the prosecution's request for Combs to be held without bail.

Combs and a co-conspirator kidnapped a victim on Dec. 22, 2011, from the home of someone only identified as “Individual-1,” according to a prosecution memo.

"Approximately two weeks later, the defendant’s co-conspirators set fire to Individual-1’s vehicle by slicing open the car’s convertible top and dropping a Molotov cocktail inside the interior," prosecutors said. "Police and fire department reports extensively document the arson and conclude that the fire was intentionally set. Multiple witnesses would also testify to the defendant bragging about his role in destroying Individual-1’s car."

Combs offers to post $50 million bond, backed by Miami home

Yasmeen Persaud

Sean Combs offered to post a $50 million bond so he could be released from custody, pending his trial on three federal counts which accuse him of sex crimes that go back more than a decade.

He's also offered to wear a GPS monitor while limiting travel to New York City and Miami, where he'd only be attending court and seeing his doctors and lawyers, according to a proposed bail package filed by his defense team.

A plane owned by Combs is in Los Angeles and he's in the process of selling it, his lawyers said.

Federal prosecutors are asking a judge to deny bail for Combs, insisting that the defendant is a flight risk and danger to the community.

Read the full indictment of Sean 'Diddy' Combs

Combs a flight risk who poses threat to community, prosecutors argue.

Accused sex trafficker Sean Combs is a serious risk of flight and "poses a significant risk of obstructing justice," federal authorities said.

The music mogul has a long history of seeking to bribe and illegally influence witnesses, federal prosecutors said in a 16-page letter to the court asking for Combs to be remanded into custody until trial.

"There are simply no conditions that would ensure that the defendant's efforts to obstruct and tamper with witnesses will stop," prosecutors wrote to Magistrate Judge Robyn Tarnofsky.

Prosecutors said they worry nothing could stop the defendant from acting out violently.

"In sum, the defendant's long history of violent conduct makes clear that even the most stringent bail conditions will not suffice to ensure the safety of the community," according to the government memo.

Combs faces 15 years to life behind bars if convicted of all charges, allegedly making his flight a threat due to his $1 billion net worth.

Combs' alleged 'freak offs' at center of federal prosecution

Hours- and days-long sex acts known as "freak offs" —  allegedly produced, directed and recorded by Combs — are at the core of this federal prosecution against the music mogul.

U.S. Attorney Damian Williams mentioned "freak offs" at least five times in his 18-minute meeting with reporters.

"Combs allegedly planned and controlled the sex performances, which he called 'freak offs' and he often electronically recorded them," Williams told reporters.

"The 'freak offs' sometimes lasted days at a time, involved multiple commercial sex workers, and often involved a variety of narcotics such as ketamine , ecstasy and GHB , which Combs distributed to the victims to keep them obedient and compliant."

Federal prosecutors claimed they seized more than 1,000 bottles of baby oil and other lubricants from Combs' homes that were used in these sex acts.

Combs shows he's a danger based on AR-15 rifles seized, government says

Federal prosecutors put on display images of weapons seized during raids on Combs' homes, including several high capacity firearms.

Two of three AR-15s taken from Combs were in his bedroom closet in Miami, where they had been "broken down into parts, along with magazines with ammunition loaded in them," U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said, pointing at enlarged pictures of the weapons.

Serial numbers on those AR-15s had been defaced, prosecutors said.

Combs will be safe behind bars, prosecutor says in response to Epstein suicide question

U.S. Attorney Damian Williams rejected any hints that Combs could be in danger while behind bars while responding to a question about Jeffrey Epstein's suicide in jail .

"We are concerned with anyone's safety whenever they are detained prior to trial, it's part of our obligation," Williams said.

"But I do not draw any sort of connection between Jeffrey Epstein's suicide and what may or may not happen to any other defendant while they are detained pretrial. Our position is that pretrial detention is warranted (for Combs) under the law and based on the facts of this case."

Federal prosecutors want bail denied to keep Combs locked up until trial

The U.S. government doesn't want Combs released on bail, saying there's a "presumption of detention" in this case.

"So we will be seeking detention," U.S. Attorney Damian Williams told reporters. "There is a presumption of detention in a case like this, and we think that's warranted."

From key to New York City to federal lockup

Combs went from the top of New York City to a federal lockup in one year, with U.S. Attorney Damian Williams pledging the investigation is not done and refusing to take further charges off the table.

"A year ago, Sean Combs stood in Times Square and was handed a key to New York City," Williams told reporters today. "Today, he's been indicted and will face justice in the Southern District of New York."

Combs was later forced to give the ceremonial honor back, when Mayor Eric Adams asked for it to be returned.

"We are not done," Williams added when asked about the potential for more charges. "This investigation is ongoing, and I encourage anyone with information about this case to come forward and to do it quickly."

‘Grotesque’ and a ‘monster’: Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs charged with sex trafficking and more

Sean “Diddy” Combs was charged with sex trafficking and more. NBC News’ Chloe Melas is outside the courthouse with the latest reporting. MSNBC’s Lisa Rubin also joins José Díaz-Balart to break down the indictment.

Combs allegedly punched and kicked his sex abuse victims

In addition to employing drugs and elements of his business enterprises to control victims, Combs also used physical violence to keep women in control, federal prosecutors said.

"On numerous occasions," Combs would assault women by "among other things, striking, punching, dragging, throwing objects at and kicking them," according to a three-count indictment against the music mogul.

In May of this year, Combs apologized for violent behavior after  video surfaced of him beating his ex-girlfriend Cassie in 2016 , matching the description of an incident she detailed in a lawsuit.

At the time he said that his “behavior on that video is inexcusable.”

Criminal acts date back to 2008, prosecutors say

The three-count indictment against Combs include alleged criminal acts going back 16 years, court documents said.

The racketeering count covers acts allegedly committed by the defendant starting in 2008, while sex trafficking and transportation to engage in prostitution started in 2009, court papers showed.

Combs changed his public name and persona to Diddy in 2005 , dropping the P in "P. Diddy."

1,000 bottles of baby oil, lubricants seized in raid of Combs' homes

Federal agents raided Combs' homes in Miami and Los Angeles in March and came away with supplies allegedly used in sexual assaults, court documents showed.

At the time of the raids, federal officials would only say they “executed law enforcement actions” in New York as part of an ongoing investigation, along with teams in Los Angeles and Miami.

In court papers made public today, government officials revealed that they took supplies Combs allegedly used in "Freak Off" sexual assaults.

Agents "seized various Freak Off supplies, including narcotics and more than 1,000 bottles of baby oil and lubricant."

Combs' business empire key to crimes, prosecutors say

english essay news paper

At the height of his power, Combs was more than just a musician: He controlled a vast business empire — including record labels and alcohol and clothing brands — that made him a billionaire.

Now, prosecutors are alleging that Combs' commercial enterprise was a key component of his criminal enterprise. The mogul used his businesses and several of his employees "to carry out, facilitate, and cover up his abuse and commercial sex," according to the indictment unsealed this morning.

"Those employees — including security staff, household staff, personal assistants, and high-ranking supervisors — and other close associates acted as COMBS’ intermediaries, and their conduct was facilitated and assisted by COMBS’ control of the Combs Business," prosecutors added.

Federal prosecutors seeking to seize assets

The U.S. government is seeking to recover significant financial assets from the famed music mogul through this prosecution, court documents revealed.

Combs could be on the hook for "any and all property, real and personal" and an undetermined "sum of money" involved in these alleged crimes, according to the indictment.

The court document did not specifically list any assets or amount of money it would be seeking to take from Combs.

Drugs fueled dayslong 'freak offs,' videos used to 'ensure ... obedience,' prosecutors say

Sex abuse allegedly directed by Combs was fueled by drugs and often went days at a time, prosecutors said.

Victims were filled with drugs to control them for long stretches of time, authorities said, with participants “typically” having to get “IV fluids to recover from the physical exertion.”

And once victims were lured into this orbit, they were coerced to keep following the suspect's orders, prosecutors said.

Combs used "the sensitive, embarrassing and incriminating recordings that he made during Freak Offs as collateral to ensure the continued obedience and silence of the victims," according to court documents.

'Freak offs': Combs accused of forcing and recording sex acts

Federal prosecutors accused Combs of forcing victims into sex acts that he allegedly called "freak offs," acts which he recorded for his viewing pleasure.

Combs "used force" to "cause victims to engage in extended sex acts with male commercial sex workers that Combs arranged, directed, masturbated during and often electronically recorded," court documents charged.

The defendant called these acts his "freak offs," prosecutors said.

Combs allegedly used his powers to abuse, coerce and 'fulfill his sexual desires'

The charges against Combs allege he "threatened and coerced women and others around him to fulfill his sexual desires" for years, federal prosecutors said.

Combs created "a criminal enterprise whose members and associates engaged in" various crimes, such as "sex trafficking, forced labor, kidnapping, arson, bribery and obstruction of justice," court documents said.

A federal indictment was unsealed against Combs, charging him with three felony counts.

He's been accused of racketeering, sex trafficking and transportation to engage in prostitution.

The artist and music mogul — referenced in the indictment by his real name, Sean Combs — has entered a New York City courtroom to hear the charges.

Combs' attorney arrives at the courthouse

Carolina Gonzalez

Combs’ attorney, Marc Agnifilo, has arrived at Manhattan federal court and briefly spoke to a large media gathering outside.

"He came to New York to basically engage the court system and start the case, and it will start today and he’s going to plead not guilty," Agnifilo said. "He’s going to fight this with all of his energy and all of his might and the full confidence of his lawyers."

Sean “Diddy” Combs is in custody after being arrested in New York last night by federal authorities under charges that are part of a sealed indictment. Combs' arrest comes amid a wave of lawsuits against him alleging sexual assault and sex trafficking. NBC’s Chloe Melas reports and Laura Jarrett offers analysis on the possible charges.

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs arrest: Timeline and what to know

Since November 2023, Combs has been hit with a series of lawsuits in New York accusing him of sexual assault, sexual trafficking and engaging in other criminal activity.

Here are the lawsuits that were filed against Combs as well as information about law enforcement investigations. Combs has denied all of the allegations individually through statements by his representatives.

The first big hint that Combs could be facing serious legal issues came in November of last year when the singer Cassie, Combs’ former romantic partner, filed a civil suit against him for alleged sexual and physical abuse. That abuse allegedly ranged from 2007 until Cassie left him in late 2018, according to the civil complaint.

Cassie's action then prompted Joi Dickerson-Neal to come forward  and file a suit against Combs, accusing him of drugging and sexually assaulting her while secretly recording that act in 1991. She was a Syracuse University student at the time.

Then in December of that year, a  Jane Doe filed a lawsuit alleging  that she was gang-raped and sex-trafficked by Combs and his business partner, Harve Pierre. The unnamed victim said the assault happened in 2003, when she was 17 and Combs was 34.

Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones  alleged  in a federal suit in February of this year that, while working as a producer for Combs, he and his associates engaged in “serious illegal activity.”

Combs' homes in Los Angeles and Miami were raided by Homeland Security Investigations in March of this year, NBC News reported at the time, citing three sources familiar with the matter. Those raids were mentioned in the indictment made public today, as "Freak Off supplies, including narcotics and more than 1,000 bottle of baby oil and lubricant" were seized.

Stunning video surfaced on CNN in May of this year, showing Combs attacking Cassie  in a 2016 assault she described in the suit.

And earlier this month, Dawn Richard, a former member the Danity Kane musical group that Combs assembled on MTV reality competition “Making the Band,”  sued Combs in federal court, claiming he groped, assaulted and imprisoned her, and threatened her life when she tried to intervene in defense of Combs’ then-girlfriend Cassie.

Combs and one of his cronies kidnapped an individual at gunpoint in December 2011 while they tried to break into the home of another person, according to prosecutors.
