Review: ‘M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story’ Recalls a Cricketer’s Ascent

You don’t have to understand cricket to enjoy a good cricket movie. “Lagaan” (2001), whose centerpiece was a rousing match of underdog (Indian) versus overdog (British colonials), got the heart pounding, even if you couldn’t follow all the ins and outs of the game. It was the rare Bollywood movie to reach across the aisle, as it were, attracting moviegoers beyond the faithful.
To warm to the biopic “M. S. Dhoni: The Untold Story,” you probably do have to be a cricket fan, and an indulgent one at that. Long (180 minutes) and languid, it takes you through the life of Mahendra Singh Dhoni , the unflappable captain of the Indian cricket team that won the 2011 World Cup.
Dhoni (Sushant Singh Rajput), as presented here, is a natural athlete — cricket wasn’t even his sport of choice as a boy — a nice guy and, in the end, something like a national hero. He meets setbacks with a pause (a kind of timeout) and a hard-to-read smile. Then he goes on. What makes him tick? That remains the untold story.
The movie, written and directed by Neeraj Pandey, is not hagiographic or overly obvious. Instead, it’s something of a quiet muddle, with too many squandered or dramatically blurry scenes. (Even the song montages are wasted; in one we see three versions of the same action, as if the editor ran out of ideas or footage.)
Mr. Pandey gets a bit of help from his star: Mr. Rajput lends Dhoni a poker-faced charisma and manages to convey some vague determination. But vague determination does not a hero make. I learned more about Mr. Dhoni — his enigmatic character and what marked him as a great captain — by reading about him after watching this movie than I did during three long hours.
“M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story” is not rated.

Quick take: An authentic personal account of MS Dhoni's life
MS Dhoni: The Untold Story is a biopic that promises to give you never-heard-before details about an Indian sporting hero. The untold story of an Indian cricketing legend, under whom the Indian cricket team ascended from being good to great. The film reserves to contrasting halves for its storytelling effort. The first half establishes Dhoni as a character, a person and a boy who dreams big and hits bigger. The second half portrays him as an achiever and a lover. What the movie doesn't do is get intimate. At least not with the cricketing great. Mahendra Singh Dhoni's personal life has been depicted with detail, even his reported shy and aloof nature has been drawn out on the big screen to good effect. But the film does not touch upon a cricketer, his journey through dressing rooms and pitches and definitely not his conflicts or controversies. But the personal story of MS Dhoni, combined with director Neeraj Pandey's no nonsense approach to filmmaking does give you a decent watch. At 190 minutes (a staggering 3+ hours) the movie does take its time. But it never drops the ball. It always manages to draw you in and that's not such a bad feat.
The story kicks off with MS Dhoni's birth and goes all the way up to his winning six in the 2011 World Cup final. The first half is set in '80s and '90s Ranchi as a bright-eyed Dhoni discovers the trappings of cricket over football. His prodigious talent makes him an instant favourite in the local circles. As he grows up, so does the imminent wait for his big break. His lower middle-class family does everything in their power to make Dhoni an international cricketer. The chances don't come easy and the travails of a small town boy trying to live his dream make the first half of MS Dhoni authentic and genuinely fascinating. In reality, Dhoni is perceived as a simple and humble man, despite his herculean achievement and talents. The film's setup does justice to that fact. It gives you a genuine and insightful peek into the life of an aspiring cricketer. It makes its play on the fact that dreaming big is okay and that achieving dreams doesn't need miracles.
The second half though is an all new ball game. It just breezes through Dhoni's cricketing life keeping focus on his romances and humility rather than his involvement in the politics of cricket. There is a brief mention of his aggressive selection policies, but everything else from his professional life is just conveniently omitted. You never quite get intimate with India's most successful cricket captain. The focus is kept solely on a small town guy hitting it big on a global stage.
While MS Dhoni the film does not have the all-rounder ability of the person it's inspired from, it excels within its limitations. Director Neeraj Pandey crafts an engaging story with Dhoni's life. His efforts, especially with detailed production design and screenplay writing make even the 190 minutes seem balanced and nimble. Mention must also be made of the superb use of CGI in transferring Sushant Singh Rajput's face onto real-life footage of Dhoni. The visual effects quality on offer is top notch all through.
The biggest contributor to the impact of the film though is its lead Sushant Singh Rajput. His efforts are pitch perfect. With every passing minute all you feel is that you're actually watching Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Not some actor trying to be a cricketer and a confident but restrained man. He lives the part and makes Dhoni come alive. His cricketing shots and his body language are a masterclass. Sushant Singh Rajput's efforts alone make the movie worth a watch. Supporting performances by Anupam Kher, Bhumika Chawla, Rajesh Sharma and Kumud Mishra are perfectly adequate. The heroines Disha Patani and Kiara Advani only come up in the second half and both ladies have marginal roles. Disha Patani though, does stand out with her screen presence.
MS Dhoni: The Untold Story is a long film but it does well to both entertain and engage its audience despite its length. While it may not draw on major insights into Dhoni's cricketing career, it does make for a compelling story through his personal life. If you ever wanted to get up close and personal with MS Dhoni the person, this is the film to watch. Its a solid biopic, one that makes a true hero out of its subject.

MS Dhoni The Untold Story review: Sushant Singh Rajput delivers a pitch-perfect performance
Planning to watch ms dhoni the untold story this weekend here's our review. .
Listen to Story
Director: Neeraj Pandey Cast: Sushant Singh Rajput, Anupam Kher, Kiara Advani, Disha Patani, Rajesh Sharma, Kumud Mishra, Neeta Mohindra, Bhumika Chawla
MS Dhoni: The Untold Story aims for an immediate high as it revisits the memorable night of the 2011 World Cup Final in Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. The audience chants India! India! India! and then it is instantaneously replaced by another five-letter word in Dhoni, who, as the captain of the Indian cricket team, takes to the pitch to chase the target set by Sri Lanka. Thereafter the film turns back in time, precisely 30 years to the day Dhoni was born and then unfolds, occasionally sluggishly, the bouncers-laden journey to the top of one of India's most beloved sportsmen. The film works best when it showcases that talent alone is never enough, one needs to toil, persevere and take risks. Trouble is that once Dhoni achieves his dream which is to play for India, the film totters to the finish line struggling to hit the high note it began with, and the interest it maintained in the first 90 minutes.

That it isn't to say that this is a poorly constructed biopic of a sporting hero, one who in fact continues to play. Given that the film is co-produced by Arun Pandey, who founded Rhiti Sports, the agency which in turn represents Dhoni, the film could easily have been a straight up hagiography. But Neeraj Pandey just about manages to present the failures, frustrations and (hardly any) flaws of his film's eponymous hero. Dhoni has more memorable moments than Mary Kom and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag combined and that's largely because the film shines a light on the supporting players who played an instrumental role in the making of Dhoni.
There is his school coach Banerjee (Rajesh Sharma), who spots him and encourages him to ditch goalkeeping and take up wicket-keeping instead. Kumud Mishra is a powerful official at Central Coalfield Ltd who encourages Dhoni in his teenage years by offering him a stipend. Friends in Ranchi in Pratam, owner of a sporting goods shop, and Santosh, from whom Dhoni learned the famous helicopter shot, are always watching out for him. An Indian railways officer AJ Shukla (Kali Prasad Mukherjee) and a roommate at the Railway headquarters in Kharagpur also come to his aid as Dhoni struggles to shuttle between being a ticket collector and a cricketer at the regional level. And finally there are the supportive women, his mother (Neeta Mohindra) and sister (Bhumika Chawla), and Paan Singh Dhoni, the reluctantly supportive father (Anupam Kher) who doesn't want his son to end up being a pump operator like him.
Through Paan Singh what the film does particularly well is highlight why the middle class Indian patriarch is still wary of sports as a profession even if it is as popular as cricket. So much so that young Dhoni gets his chance because the school's first choice wicket keeper is forced to leave the team by his father. After all studies should be priority as it promises a job. By creating a realistic middle class milieu, best seen in Dhoni's tiny, crammed house and later in the railway quarters he resides in Kharagpur, the film is able to draw you further into Dhoni's fraught journey from state sensation to international cricket icon.
The film covers key moments in Dhoni's career but the focus here is solely on Dhoni the big hitter than Dhoni the wicket keeper or the composed captain. So the highlights footage is largely Rajput flinging his bat than doing wonders behind the stumps. Watching the film's second half can at times feel like watching the tail order bat to avoid defeat in a test match. That's because once Dhoni has made the national team Pandey along with his writer Dilip Jha are unable to present as compelling a portrait as they did earlier on. Instead of focusing on Dhoni's ascent to India's captain and his rapport with players, viewers are made to sit through Dhoni's romantic life which has its share of contrived moments. The love portions start out well but then quickly fizzle, adding little substance to the narrative other than telling us, Hey, Dhoni was perhaps commitment phobic? Sorely missed are moments like the showdown with Yuvraj Singh at the regional level seen earlier on. There is little on how Dhoni reacted to failures and attacks to his house. It almost seems that Dhoni didn't want the untold locker room and boardroom nuggets to make it into the film.
Neeraj Pandey's fourth film is his biggest yet but it is not his finest work. That honour still goes to his second feature, Special 26. But with a physically committed and emotionally measured performance by Sushant Singh Rajput and enough untold and lighter moments, MS Dhoni manages to give us a glimpse into the cricketer albeit only till 2011. MS Dhoni The Untold Story may not bowl you over, but it is an inspiring tale which reminds you that the road to success is mostly prolonged like a test match and not as entertaining as a Twenty20 tie. The challenge with films that tell real-life stories (of public figures) is that the audience already has a broader picture of the narrative. The director’s ability to pull it off then is in the telling. And there are few storytellers in Hindi cinema like Neeraj Pandey. His debut A Wednesday still stays his best work so far. But MS Dhoni – The Untold Story is an ambitious project, bigger than anything he’s helmed before.
MS Dhoni trails the journey of a young passionate boy from Ranchi with big dreams. He won’t settle for a meagre existence, like his father. The film interestingly captures his journey from the school kid who takes keen interest in sports (though not cricket) to a star cricketer loved by millions.

It’s an inspiring, moving tale. But what’s endearing about this journey is that it doesn’t change or lessen the person he is. The tremendously talented Sushant Singh Rajput in the role of M.S. Dhoni made sure he brought that out with his near-flawless performance.
The actor adds another great work to his remarkable filmography. He’s achieved much in a short span of time. He along with Neeraj Pandey majorly take home the credit for the success M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story has turned out to be. The rest of the cast — Anupam Kher, Rajesh Sharma, Kumud Mishra, Bhumika Chawla, Zeeshan (who played young Dhoni) equally well supported the film.
Despite its three-hour runtime, MS Dhoni is a thoroughly engaging film. Watch it!

Movie Review! ‘MS Dhoni: The Untold Story’ is a must-watch for Dhoni fans
MS Dhoni’s biopic ‘MS Dhoni: The Untold Story’ is an intriguing take on MS Dhoni’s life, on and off the field. It starts with Sushant Singh Rajput, who is playing MS Dhoni’s role in the movie, walking down the steps of Wankhede Stadium for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 final and then immediately takes you back to MS Dhoni’s childhood days, and the story starts unfolding from there.
A young boy from Ranchi who just wanted to hit every ball for a six comes through the ranks and becomes the most successful Indian captain ever. It’s a story of boy who preferred football over cricket but went on to become only the second Indian captain to lift the ICC Cricket World Cup trophy, after Kapil Dev.
ALSO READ: MS Dhoni’s biopic did a business of 21.30 crore on the opening day
Sushant Singh Rajput has acted brilliantly throughout the movie and the supporting cast, which includes veteran actor Anupam Kher, has also done a very good job.
Cricket and life as a ticket collector
There are no dramatic cricket matches in the movie as Dhoni’s cricketing journey has been shown in a very undramatic and realistic manner. There is also a fairly long chapter on Dhoni’s life as a ticket collector in Indian railways. Fans will enjoy watching this particular part of the movie as it shows how hard it was for MS Dhoni before he became the captain of Indian cricket team and achieved what he has.

Is it really the untold story?
The movie lives up to its name ‘The Untold Story’ as many personal and professional secrets of MS Dhoni’s life have been disclosed in the movie.
If you are looking for controversies, then you will be a bit disappointed. Just like Dhoni’s life on the field, his biopic is also free of any controversy.
The Cricket Lounge gives ‘MS Dhoni: The Untold Story’ 4.5 stars.
It is an absolute must watch for Indian cricket and MS Dhoni fans. Some might complain it’s long but we believe narrating one of the most glorious journeys in Indian cricket in three hours is a job well done.
The last scene of the movie will make you stand up on your feet and applause the way you did when India won the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2011.

‘MS Dhoni – The Untold Story’ review: Some thrills and many slog overs
Neeraj pandey’s biopic features a dogged performance from sushant singh rajput..
Neeraj Pandey’s seat-warmer of a biopic begins right at the beginning, in a hospital ward where Paan Singh Dhoni (Anupam Kher) is pacing the corridors.
Is it a boy or a girl? There is some confusion on that score. This sequence shows the first of many details about Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s early years that Pandey has dredged up in order to create a supposedly intimate study of one of cricket’s most charismatic figures. The 190-minute MS Dhoni – The Untold Story aims to be to cricket what Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi was to the historical biopic¸ but it is only as intimate as Dhoni and the filmmakers allowed it to be. The movie has been presented by the Rhiti group, which is run by Dhoni’s associate Arun Pandey, who is also one of the movie’s producers. Dhoni was reportedly paid vast sums to approve the project and allowing the considerable magnetism of his brand to rub off on the promotions.
We are shown a dutiful son, an attentive boyfriend and an entirely successful Indian team captain, whose level-headedness and fierce attacking style on the field wins Indian many crucial games, including the World Cup in 2011.
The movie is less a study of psyche than of personality. But within its hagiographic constraints, Pandey and lead actor Sushant Singh Rajput assert themselves admirably.
The most compelling portions that depict the trudge into the spotlight are all in the first 100-odd minutes, tracing Dhoni’s school-level breakthroughs with the guidance of his physical trainer (Rajesh Sharma), and encouragement from a supportive mother and sister and loyal friends. This propels him out of the small orbit of Ranchi into the stratosphere. Pandey perfectly captures the milieu of the small-town government housing complex and public school where Dhoni first displays his ability to smash the ball out of sight. State-subsidised facilities and opportunities are crucial to paving the path of this poster boy of individual achievement.
It is at the much-derided state-level selection camps that Dhoni catches the eye of a Coal India officer (Kumud Mishra) and later an Indian Railways official (Kali Prasad Mukherjee), and both encourage him by giving him employment and a wide berth to train himself into a run-generating machine.
This public sector undertaking baby finally takes his step towards adulthood – but at the interval point, he is still a long-haired Railway ticket collector waiting patiently for his big break. Pandey stretches out Dhoni’s formative years since the rest amounts to little more than an advertisement for Dhoni’s brilliance.
Clunkily packed into the rest of the movie are his relationships with two women (Disha Patani and Kiara Advani), his stewardship of the Indian cricket team, and his final match-winning performance at the World Cup in 2011. Pandey’s interest in Dhoni’s captaincy – a colourful and complex phase in his life – doesn’t extend beyond the winning knocks. For the real untold story about Dhoni’s controversial association with the Indian Premier League team Chennai Super Kings, for instance, we have to wait for an unauthorised biography from the likes of the Bhatt brothers.
Rajput works admirably within the limits and displays a dogged determination in wrapping his head around a character whose inner life remains out of bounds. By depicting Dhoni as a loner within a crowd rather than as a gregarious person, the actor perhaps inadvertently gets to the movie’s core.
When Dhoni has to cry from disappointment or heartbreak, he hides in a corner. When he exults, it is with the preternatural calm that we known Dhoni for. “He made leadership seem such light work that when he won the World T20 in 2007, he didn’t seem like Atlas, shouldering some great burden, he came across as a karmayogi in blue: his superpower was unflappability,” Mukul Kesavan wrote in his lovely tribute in 2015.
There is a test-match quality to the efforts taken to highlight every bump and curve on the way of the journey of a quick scorer. Yet, Dhoni remains an enigma. When and how did a young man from Ranchi grow out his hair, develop a love for motorcycles and evolve into the flamboyant genre-breaking cricketer with the gum-baring grin and the irresistible insouciance? Even Dhoni cannot figure that one out.

MS Dhoni review: Sushant’s film entertains, but stays away from controversies
Ms dhoni - the untold story review: sushant singh rajput has played mahendra singh dhoni in a brilliant way. he is the backbone of the film..
MS Dhoni: The Untold Story Cast: Sushant Singh Rajput, Disha Patani, Kiara Advani Director: Neeraj Pandey Rating: 3/5
When India is reeling at 114 for 3 against Sri Lanka in the cricket world cup final of 2011, a man decides to take charge of the situation. It helps that he is also the captain of the team. He silently walks past the crowd, enters the ground and creates history.
The cricketer’s image of rotating the bat as if he is wielding the sword is etched in our memory.
On April 2, 2011, India reaffirms its faith in the hero who was selected into the team through BCCI’s tier-two city programme.
Here, director Neeraj Pandey takes us 15 years earlier when Pan Singh Dhoni (Anupam Kher) is a pump operator in Ranchi. The local stadium needs water and that requires him to wake up at eleven in the night. He waters the stadium in a hazy winter night. Pan’s little son watches him from the balcony of his government quarter, and probably this is the moment when the kid decides to make it big in life.
It’s the story of Mahendra Singh Dhoni (Sushant Singh Rajput), the current India captain and one of the game’s most popular exponents ever.
One may argue about the struggles of a player who gets into the national team at 23. There are many who keep waiting for a call till their bodies stop responding. But, ducking bouncers in search of a half volley is also a mammoth struggle.
When coach Banerjee (Rajesh Sharma) picks a football-loving kid for the school team’s wicketkeeper job, he only wanted a new boy to play well. The lad turns out to be a brute force, whose mother candidly declares, “ Ye itne se me khush hone waalon mein se nahi hai ” (Sky is the limit for him).
A teenage Dhoni might be a local cricketing hero, but that doesn’t mean much for his father, who wants the security of a government job for him. This forces the boy to play for small stipend money, but his friends are his strength. They show faith in Mahi, even more than his family does.
However, love doesn’t replace necessities, and the ticket collector’s job brings him to Kharagpur. Not getting enough chances, he looks impatient, but it’s just another perfectly-pitched out-swinger he needs to leave.
There excels Sushant, who is every ounce Dhoni in this ‘box-office oriented’ biopic. His body language, walk, helicopter shot, everything matches the India captain. And where even that can’t do the trick, real footage has been used.
The first half of this nearly 180-minute film goes into the riveting details of a middle-class boy’s life in the hilly town of Ranchi. People are concerned about each other, and there is a genuine love for talented kids. Nobody is a villain here, not even the cricket officials. Optimism and hard work are expected to take people to new destinations.
However, the dream can be smaller. Like, Dhoni’s sister Jayanti (Bhumika Chawla) says, “ Mehnat karega toh ek din railway me RM bhi ban sakta hai ” (If you’ll keep doing hard work then you can also become the RM in railways). Dhoni smiles, we too.
We knew the man, and now we have seen the journey too. So, what’s still untold?
Maybe the backroom politics of the cricket governing bodies? The pressure on the captain? The sponsors’ role?
This is where it begins to falter. Sushant keeps going though, like one true commander on the screen.
Watch: We list top 5 Bollywood biopics
A love song here, an overtly dramatic scene there, slowly it becomes a typical Bollywood product. It still entertains though. Just don’t expect any take on controversies. The film tries to establish Dhoni above all the petty issues.
A tribute to MSD’s success, this works due to the extensive research. They have touched Dhoni’s tender sides as well and the treatment is likely to suit the protagonist. In short, he may become a cleaner and bigger hero after the film.
Our heroes are generally virtuous, but a biopic also needs objectivity. The director has silver-wrapped the facts that are mostly known.
But you have to give to Pandey to keep it intriguing enough for you to get hooked throughout the three hours. Unquestionably entertaining. Also, it’s the role of a lifetime for Sushant, and he has aced it.

MS Dhoni: The Untold Story Review: Journey of a Small-Town Boy With Big Dreams

MS Dhoni: The Untold Story
Director: Neeraj Pandey
Cast: Sushant Singh Rajput, Anupam Kher, Rajesh Sharma, Bhumika Chawla, Kumud Mishra, Disha Patani, Kiara Advani, Harry Tangri
MS Dhoni: The Untold Story is like a calendar of events from the life of India’s most successful cricket captain. This happened, that happened, this person helped him, that person encouraged him, he won this match, he fell in love with that girl. It’s really a hagiography. Never an insightful character study of a fascinating and largely impenetrable personality. If you’ve always wondered what lies beneath Dhoni’s calm veneer, or what’s going on in his head when the chips are down, be warned this film doesn’t answer those questions.
Which is not to say that it doesn’t work. Special 26 director Neeraj Pandey’s film is a rousing drama. Mostly because our protagonist’s journey from a small-town boy with big dreams to India’s star wicketkeeper-batsman is an inspiring one.
Pandey’s recreation of life in small-town India feels authentic, as do his characters. The early portions, in particular, are pure gold. A young Mahi is ‘discovered’ on the school football field by the cricket coach (Rajesh Sharma), who spots his potential. His father (Anupam Kher) insists that he focus on his studies, because a job will help him more than sports. Yet, he finds supporters in his mother and sister, and a bunch of loyal friends who believe in him. Before long, “Mahi maar raha hai" becomes a common refrain in his native Ranchi as he repeatedly whacks the ball out of sight, enthralling the growing crowd, and graduating to bigger things.
Sushant Singh Rajput is riveting as Dhoni; he’s got the body language and the cricket down pat. He makes the character’s frustration palpable, as you watch him trapped in a job as a railway ticket collector in Kharagpur. He makes you root for him as he pursues his goal single-mindedly, refusing to be swept away by small successes or discouraged by obstacles and failures.
It’s a terrific performance and the key to staying invested in the film even when it trudges down a frankly boring and predictable path in its second half. There are two romances and they come in quick succession (one with Disha Patani’s Priyanka, the other with Kiara Advani’s Saakshi), but these relationships offer little by way of a glimpse under Dhoni’s inscrutable surface. Neither do we get a sense of his strategy as Team India’s captain, or his relationships with the other players. It’s a shame Pandey never really addresses the controversies associated with Dhoni (barring a fleeting mention of two), or any of the brickbats that came his way, choosing instead to stick to a wholly reverential portrait.
Clocking in at nearly 3 hours and 10 minutes, the film is overlong and far from perfect. But climaxing with Dhoni’s incredible performance in the 2011 World Cup, Pandey pushes all the right buttons and leaves you, your chest swelling with pride.
So even though your head knows this is far from a no-holds-barred, warts-and-all biopic, your heart is happy to settle. Much of the credit for that must go to the finely executed cricket scenes, and to the film’s terrific ensemble of actors led by Sushant Singh Rajput who does some of his best work here.
I’m going with three out of five for MS Dhoni: The Untold Story.

M. S. Dhoni - The Untold Story - Preview
The idea of watching the beginnings and struggles of one of India's most successful cricket captains is extremely exciting. That too one whose career is not closing in, just yet. But, we don't really want to see what we already know, do we? I am very keen on what is not very well known through newspapers and interviews.
A better peek into the man who fought it through. Maybe a glimpse of his thoughts when he lost his first match or he hit that sixer to win India the world cup. Sushant Singh seems to be geared up well, alright!
Interestingly, even the romantic in me, is hoping that not much time is spent on his love life. Unfortunately, the number of songs in the film indicate that that's unlikely. I surely hope the background music doesn't add too much drama. Even if the music isn't all that enticing.
Music Reviews : Bollywood Life – "3.5/5" filmfare - "4/5" indiatoday.in - "mostly interesting" Milliblog - "In his first solo soundtrack, Amaal hits a century." Music Aloud – "2.5/5" Times of India - “3/5”

A biopic usually chooses to paint a larger-than-life picture – and it would be justified because hey, the person has achieved enough for a biopic to be made on his life. A biopic usually elaborates the well-known, key moments of success. A biopic rarely goes beyond what newspaper headlines cover. M S Dhoni – The Untold Story does none of the above. It chooses to impress with details of a more than humble beginning. It chooses to inspire rather than merely awe. The pace is slow. At 185 minutes, the film is long. A person waiting for the scoop on Dhoni's controversial decisions will have to wait longer.
Of course, they promised us things we didn't already know. And a lot of the first half's charm comes from those little details. In fact, the makers might have taken advantage of the reverence his fans have for him. Had this been a fictional story, the details might or might not have been as interesting. We'll never know. But as it stands, the film is cute, refreshing, surprising and inspiring. Not only because Dhoni had to fight a lot of odds. He did so with humility and gratitude. It almost feels like Dhoni chose this medium to thank the people who helped him reach where he is now and told the filmmakers only about those situations and moments.
The writers also give us these philosophies that he had, developed and lived by. Unfortunately though, we are not made privy to his strategy, his thought process. They even tease the audience with an instance of how he took his teammates in confidence but they never tell us exactly what he thought or said. That I was looking forward to and sorely missed.
That Mahi bites his nails, is afraid of commitment, wants to please his father, is a prankster, gets frustated – make him human – like you and me. These tidbits keep him from becoming a superhero and instead show his level-headedness.
Ok, I will stop myself from making this into an essay on Mahendra Singh Dhoni. One last thing - I loved the romantic flirt in him. Not to mention, the couple of romantic scenes in the film do much more than feature length romantic films. Of course, if it were not for Sushant Singh 's cutesy boy-ness, these scenes might not have worked. Otherwise too, he carries the character and the film well, never once seeming unconvincing.
However, there are quite a few things that kept me from enjoying the movie more than I did. The background music. The occasional use of slow-motion and other dramatic elements. Sure these elements worked to bring a smile. Of course, a reaction shot of a non-believer of Mahi's shot is bound to bring a smile. I digress again.
There was a slack in pace at the beginning of many sequences. There is attention to detail and there is detail. You can appreciate the simplicity of the clothes that Mahi's family wears, the pains taken to show a true-blue middle-class household, the characters that make small-town India and so on. The movie fills you with warmth for the hard-working, dedicated working class of India. But the movie also begins to annoy with too much detail. The audience enters almost every scene a little too early. Way too many scenes have a character enter a room, open a door, sit, exchange pleasantries and so on. Precious screen time spent on setting the mood, and it doesn't really happen.
But hey, for a person who likes to watch test matches more than a T-20 , it was worth the wait for me.
And yet, when the second half picks pace it sorely lacks detail. 35 years isn't a very long life. However, when you have achieved a lot in those 35 years, it can warrant a film. When one sets out to make that film, they have lots to pick from. Biopics could be interesting or not depending on what was left out. M S Dhoni – The Untold Story picks a lot of lovely details from before the man's rise to success and stardom. However, life after success is skimmed through in a rush.
Maybe it is intentional, metaphorical even. The struggle was long. The success, once it came, happened all too quickly. Or maybe the last 8-10 years are too “current”; a little risky to have the details open for public scrutiny. Maybe it is an opening for an untold story - Part 2, when this will all be history. Yes, I am a fan and I can't have enough.
Till then though, we can bank on Bollywood to deliver the predictable. And this once we are thankful. You know how this specific biopic is going to begin. In fact, you want it to begin and end so, and no other way. And yet you have goosebumps when you watch it. That is the power of your fandom and your love for the game. The makers would have to really mess it up to take that away from you. They don't.

So-So, by Kunal Guha, Mumbai Mirror : ...Director of films like A Wednesday, Special 26 and Baby, Neeraj Pandey steers this story with the conviction and game of a conveyor belt handler, loading one sequence after the other in succession, with little thought to the overall impact. I have no issues with film makers successful in one particular genre trying their hand on another genre. In that sense Neeraj Pandey shifting genres is alright. But of all things why select a biopic on a still serving player - and that too a player whose life has probably no secret aspect thanks to the 24x7 social and other media barrage?
The only aspect in a Dhoni film would be a rags-to-riches tale. But that saga has been the staple income of Bollywood producers over the decades, and thus cannot be made further interesting.
I cannot say that I am really waiting with bated breath for this Neeraj Pandey film to release.
That a Neeraj Pandey film would be brilliant on screenplay, story telling & direction is a given. But the real genius in him lies in the fact that he's paused the film at the 2011 world cup & not focused on the 14 overseas test defeats which puts a huge question on MSD's already dubious legacy. Imo, he's a good ODI cricketer blown out of proportion by the media. His poor test record would always remain a question mark on his legacy.
Full marks to Neeraj Pandey though! MSD is easily miles ahead of BMB and Mary Kom in terms of film making.
Along with Shoojit Sircar, Neeraj Pandey is the best film maker in Hindi cinema today Imo. I rate both of them ahead of Raju Hirani bcos Hirani tends to stick to his comfort zone while Sircar & Pandey have excelled in diverse genres in all aspects of film making, be it writing, screenplay and of course direction.
MSD is a bigger film star than SRK, HR, and Akshay as per 2016 first day box office. Welcome to bollywood Mr Dhoni.
The movie is about the cricketing great and the people who supported him to be what he is through success and failure.
41 cr is 2 days is a superb start and brand MSD once again proves to be a bigger brand than any bollywood actor. Despite a boring and prolonged second half, this biopic is worth a watch. At the box office, the movie would find favor among the urban and mass audiences alike. Brand MSD is a blockbuster and the bumper box office opening has reiterated this fact! I expect an 80%+ recommendation rate which could take the film to a lifetime number of around 180 cr.
http://simplebollywoodreviewer.blogspot.in/2016/10/ms-dhoni-untold-story-calender-of-events.html
If this film does not cross TJB, it will not be encouraging for Bollywood.
Prediction is 173cr.
I loved the movie and can give 3/5 stars to it. But I know since this is a biopic that why it has very low chance to become a blockbuster.
Huge drops on Monday and Tuesday. Seems like the lack of known faces and foot tapping music is impacting this movie badly in the mass sector. Agreed that the second half is labored and boring, but so was the second half of Sultan. The only difference being that that had the [comment partially delete because it is a personal attack]. As of now, it seems like MSD is carrying appreciation only among the high end and mid range multiplexes of metro and semi metro cities and the final tally would be in range with films like ZNMD, Barfi, BMB and Airlift. But at a cost of over ₹100 cr (thanks to [comment partially delete because it is a personal attack] MSDs remuneration), this movie would never be the success that the above mentioned films became.
So as per admin, insulting actors is an act of personal attack (not that most of them deserve anything better)! Wow, way to go :D
Yes @Anuj, insulting, especially by calling names is a personal attack.
Yeah it is! Doesn't matter if that person is a proven criminal, pseudo secular dimwit or a complete opportunist. Perfect communist line of thought from the critics and parallel cinema junkies who make legends out of mediocrity like Naseer "saab", Shabana "memsaab", Nandita Das and Anurag-The flop Kashyap.
My views on censorship are quite known (I hope). When Anurag Kashyap is told by censor board to clip certain dialogues as it hurts sentiments, all pseudos including those on the wogma site, are up in arms.
When @Anuj or somebody else does an Anurag, the admins are quick to remove everything that they deem as objectionable.
Why the double standards? Or basically nobody has the courage to the stand up to industry bullies?
@Fan : Different strokes for different folks is something that every strata of the society in the country tends to follow. Be it online censorship or be it theatrical viewership. I have no issues with MSD's uneven word of mouth, but I fail to understand why the audiences are always so selective in their judgement. Why is it that a Salman starrer like Sultan with an equally boring second half continued to run to packed houses into week 2 and 3? Why is it that despite a pathetic trailer, a HNY opens to much higher occupancy than an equally massy BMB or an MSD. Or even among the urban audiences, how's it that a movies like FAN and TALAASH whose trailers have virtually nothing to write home about open to better occupancy than far more convincing trailers like PIKU, Pink and Drishyam? "Stardom slavery" is ingrained among both, the urban and mass audiences alike (more so among the masses, at least urban audiences give urban movies a chance on word of mouth, eg Neerja, Pink, Kapoor & Sons etc) and is here to stay. Gone are the days of rank new comers and unknown actors like Rishi Kapoor & Amitabh Bachchan delivering mega hits and top annual grossers like Bobby and Zanjeer. Or even a newcomer Salman delivering a mega hit in MPK as late as 1989. Indian audiences seem to be moving in reverse gear as far as star worshipping is concerned!
Anuj - havnt seen the movie..But definitely got confused of your comments. So please clarify. The movies was brilliant on screenplay, story telling & direction , then a full marks to Neeraj Pandey (which you give to all his movies so you are a fan no doubt like anybody can be any bodies fan and defend him , but tye fact is that you dont like it when someone defends a person whom you byyourself dont like) and then you say the Movie has a Boring and Prolonged 2nd half. How can a movie having brilliant screenplay and director having full marks can have a boring 2 nd half. Quite contrary of thoughts by a same person.
I clearly mentions "The first half is brilliantly written, edited and directed. Neeraj Pandey brings his expertise to the fore. The dialogues are delightful and the viewer gets a good entertaining insight into MSD's upbringing and his young days. Watch out for the scenes where his coach (played by an exceptional Rajesh Sharma) is convincing him to forgo his passion for football and take to cricket."
"After a riveting and delightful first half, the movie becomes more of a romantic drama in the second half and all we get is an overdose of MSD's love life [Comment partially deleted because it gives a part of the movie away] and the sequence of events leading up to his marriage."
Rest is left to your interpretation. As for Neeraj Pandey's skills, I'm not the only one who thinks that he's a master of his craft!
@Admin : I committed the cardinal sin of calling Naseer mediocre and Anurag a flop director. Please [delete the comment partially as it amounts to personal attack] :P
I am surprised that none of the regular wogma users have watched this movie as yet to indulge in a discussion. After further thought though, I personally cannot help but get a feeling that this movie has perhaps been made to cater to MSD and portray him as a holier than thou who could do no wrong. No wonder, it does not work as well as a usual biopic should. Biopics need to delve on the vulnerable and no so perfect aspects of the individual too. None of which is a part of this film. Aspects like the IPL CSK match fixing allegations, MSD's rift with the seniors as well as the 13 embarrassing overseas test defeats between 2011-14 have all been conveniently given a miss.
Anuj - couldnt watch it , some injury problem i have. Not saying that Neeraj Is not a good director , anybody who made A Wednesday is a craftman , but unlike Shoojit whom i find better and better with every film , i find Neeraj Going down with everyone of his films..
Anup : A Wednesday is a once in a generation film that might never be recreated. Special 26 was interesting and Baby was a notch above that. MSD is in the biopic genre and his weakest movie till date imo, still a decent one time watch nevertheless.
I have yet to watch the film. As noted in one of my initial comments on this film, it is not something for which I was waiting with bated breath. I very much enjoy watching Dhoni as a cricketer, but I am not a fan of his overhyped image of captain cool.
However, I must appreciate Neeraj Pandey for his integrity, courage and position on country coming before everything else. To have the guts to remove each and every scene featuring Fawad Khan is surely commendable. The last thing we need in times of crisis is to encourage foreigners who are refusing to condemn terrorist acts against Indian soldiers, thereby accepting that they support the terrorists more than the soldiers. If for that one single reason, if I have to watch every Neeraj Pandey film, then I shall do so.
On the one hand we have Neeraj Pandey who did not mind sacrificing the solidness of his film for the right cause. And on the other hand we have the champion of mediocrity, Dharma and YRF, who for some monetary gains are backing Ali Zafar and Fawad Khan who refuse to condemn terrorist act against Indian soldiers. That those monetary gains are delusional will be known by Diwali, when Karan will lose money instead of making money due to his lack of guts to take a position for the right cause.
Even more proud of you Neeraj Pandey.
@Fan : Was Fawad part of this film initially? I didn't know that.
@Anuj: yes, he had a cameo. Playing Virat Kohli. When Fawad refused to criticize the terrorist attack on Indian soldiers, Neeraj removed the cameo parts. Good thing, in my opinion.
Yup! Good that he'd followed up movies like A Wednesday and Baby with a courageous stand in real life too.
@Anuj, you were the one telling us who is the most popular among these actors (pseudosuperstars) and went as far as telling us how popularity matters more than money making. Akshay and Salman can do charity and set up infrastructure with money and not popularity. If we the audience empowered other actors, we will see major surprises in highest earning movies. We are stuck in this popularity battle between Salman and Aamir, sometimes SRK comes in and we forget that others deserve to make it. The rise of Salman coincided with the fall of Hrithik when Kites was rejected and Dabangg was accepted. As for me, I have watched movies from India starring Akshay Kumar Akshaye Khanna John Abraham Vir Das Kunal Khemu Om Puri Nana Patekar Kangana Ranaut Kareena Kappor Karisma Kappor Radhika Apte Amitabh Bachchan Irrfan Khan Tusshar Kapoor Sanjay Kapoor Sanjay Dutt Ajay Devgan Dharmendra Sunny Deol Bobby Deol Esha Deol Hema Malini Vivek Oberoi Aftab Shivdasani Abhishek Bachchan Aamir Khan Salman Khan Saif Ali Khan Shahrukh Khan Imran Khan Jaya Bachchan Nawazuddin Siddiqui Nikhil Dwiverdi Rajpal Yadav Harman Baweja Rajnikanth Suriya Mahesh babu Ram Charan Teja Tabu Prabhas Boman Irani Shiney Ahuja Emran Hashmi Ranbir Kapoor Hrithik Roshan Dino Morea Bipasha Basu Twinkle Khanna Uday Chopra Rahul Dev Rani Mukherji Kajol Mahima Choudary Priyanka Chopra Genelia D"Souza Katrina Kaif Twinkle Khanna Juhi Chawla Zayed Khan Aishwarya Rai Jimmy Shergill Amrita Rao Sushmita Sen Karan Shah Neelam Amrish Puri Mumta Kulkarni Arjun Rampal Sohail Khan Arbaaz Khan Sunil Shetty Madhuri Dixit Sharman Joshi Sahil Khan R. Madhavan Manoj bajpai Sonakshi Sinha Diana Penty Abhay Deol Farhan Akhtar Sonu Sood Ileana DCruz Vidya Balan Mohan Lal Raj Ranade Mithun Chakraborty Arshad Warsi Anupam Kher Manisha Koirala K.K Menon Asin Jacqeline Fernades Sonali Bendre Omi Vaidya Anuksha Sharma Lisa Haydon Neha Dhupia Ali Zafar Kalki Koechlin Zarine Khan Sohum Isha Koppika Jackie Shroff Konkona Sen Sharma Chunkey Pandey Meena Kumari Siddharth Malhotra Varun Dhawan Since I know these actors, they are equally popular to me, those who chose to know certain actors and want to watch them repeatedly sometimes by buying multiple tickets do not want to expand their horizon. I wont complain,In fact Aamir and Salman must rule Bollywood till they are 75 years, lol.
Yes, audiences have made them popular and there's nothing wrong in making on screen performers popular. But the recent trend of audiences "saving money" to watch movies of the popular one's (irrespective of how pathetic the trailers are) and not bothering to watch a new comer or a not so popular actor despite the movie being a one time watch (or even better at times) is a worrying trend. And this worrying trend has directly coincided with this "holiday release" craze and hype that's been created by the media and the PR of most of these so called superstars. I have witnessed people accumulating savings and spending on movies like Bodyguard and Kick but the same folk would give a boot to Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and Airlift and prefer watching them on television instead, only b'coz Kick has "Bhai" acting in it. Had this mentality prevailed in the 70's we'd never have had an Amitabh Bachchan or a Vinod Khanna. Heck, even the likes of SRK, Aamir and Salman would have been struggling back then and there would be no DDLJ's and HAHK's to write of. Its high time the Hindi movie audiences give a 300 cr grosser to a non Khan, just to get things back to equilibrium. I do not see that happening as of now. I'm sure even before its trailer, there are more people saving up for Dangal and Tubelight than for even a tried and tested movie like Baahubali among the Hindi audiences.
In normal circumstances I would not have had watched this film. In general biographical Hindi films are not something that I am fond of.
so what gave? Several factors, but the biggest being the commercial success that the film achieved, and secondly my soft spot for Neeraj Pandey.
Quickly on the fact v/s fiction, I am unsure on how much of the film is factual and how much is fictional. So I will skip that aspect, and treat the whole film as fictional and rate it based on that.
It is a very long film, but I did not mind the duration - it did not get tiresome.
The performances are very good, from every character. Sushant Singh Rajput has very well mastered the mannerisms of Dhoni (walking style, batting style, etc.)
I did enjoy the film immensely, but I find it very difficult to put my finger on the precise things that made it work for me. The overall package is simply good, and I think rewatching the historical wins all packed in 3 hours gives you an immensely feel good emotions filled with pride. Probably that was it which made it work. At least for me.
Nice movie. Well, I am not a cricket fan. But I watched this movie. And became a fan of him. Great personality.
Nice movie, I watched this movie ....

MS DHONI-The Untold Story | Movie Review| Bookosmia
- August 4, 2021
Hello, your friend Sara here! I love how you are all pouring in your write ups on movies that inspire you.
But the one movie that is extremely close to my heart is MS Dhoni: the untold story. It is the story of a cricketer we all know – MS Dhoni, a small boy from Ranchi who grew up to be the most loved cricketer in India.
The movie talks about the boy’s financial struggles and the problems he faced as a kid.
The most prominent thing I learnt from the movie was the never give up attitude. The boy, despite being bullied and under pressure to choose a clerical job, persevered with his career in cricket and became very successful later.
Moreover, I also learnt that it is not the physical and financial condition but the passion for something that decides your future. The boy despite being from a small town in Jharkhand became one of the most successful players in international cricket.
It was the (late) Sushant Singh Rajput who played this gem of a role. Sushant was one of the most loved actors across the Bollywood industry.
In addition to this, I would like to mention a quote from the film which has become my success mantra
“Thode se mein khush hone wala mein se nahi hai ye mahiyaa”
( Mahi is not someone who will be satisfied with little).
I rate this movie 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it for all ages.

M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story is a 2016 Indian Hindi-language biographical sports drama film directed and co-written by Neeraj Pandey. It is based on the life of former Test, ODI and T20I captain of the Indian national cricket team, Mahendra Singh Dhoni. The film stars the late Sushant Singh Rajput as MS Dhoni, along with Disha Patani, Kiara Advani, and Anupam Kher.

The film covers key moments in Dhoni's career but the focus here is solely on Dhoni the big hitter than Dhoni the wicket keeper or the composed captain. So the highlights footage is largely Rajput flinging his bat than doing wonders behind the stumps.
The rest of the cast — Anupam Kher, Rajesh Sharma, Kumud Mishra, Bhumika Chawla, Zeeshan (who played young Dhoni) equally well supported the film. The actual footage of the matches lent more believability, more realness to the scenes. The anxiety, the nervousness in the final moments of the last match was so palpable.

MS Dhoni's biopic 'MS Dhoni: The Untold Story' is an intriguing take on MS Dhoni's life, on and off the field. It starts with Sushant Singh Rajput, who is playing MS Dhoni's role in the movie, walking down the steps of Wankhede Stadium for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 final and then immediately takes you back to MS Dhoni's childhood days, and the story starts unfolding from there.
Starting off from the dusty roads of Ranchi, right down to the sacred stadium grounds of the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai in the 2011 World Cup final, M. S. A biopic rarely goes beyond what newspaper headlines cover. M S Dhoni - The Untold Story does none of the above. It chooses to impress with details of a more than humble beginning. It chooses to inspire rather than merely awe. The pace is slow. At 185 minutes, the film is long.
With a runtime of 3 hours 5 minutes, M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story is painfully long. There are two romantic tracks in quick succession, and cricket takes the backseat as Dhoni and his better half go on a holiday. The scenes in the first half, though, will strike a chord with the audience. Dhoni's exchanges with his parents and sister, show ...
