Doctoral researchers for the PhD in English will be examined in three parts.

  • The first part relates to the coursework. The candidates need to score at least 50% in the assessment of each course. However, candidates who have successfully completed M.Phil. in the relevant subject and discipline are exempt from this part.
  • The second part is a thesis, which is an original body of work representing the methods and results of the research project. The minimum limit is 80,000 words for the main text. The word limit does not include appendices (if any), essential footnotes, introductory parts and statements, or the bibliography and index. At the time of thesis submission, the candidate must have published research articles and make presentation(s) at conferences as specified in the VCD.
  • The third part includes an open defence at the Viva voce.

Research Supervisor

The proposed PhD programme is intended to involve English not only as a language of instruction but also as a core component. A teacher registered/recognized as a PhD supervisor in English with research interest publications in English studies may act as the primary/first supervisor. Owing to the interdisciplinary and inter/multilingual scope of research areas, faculty members relevant disciplines may participate in this Doctoral Program as co-supervisors as needed. The primary supervisor will normally be the main contact throughout the doctoral research journey and will have overall responsibility for academic supervision.

  • It is recommended that to be eligible as primary research supervisor, the concerned teacher, (even though they are already registered as Research Guide/Supervisor in English), should get a separate recognition from the University as Research Supervisor in Applied Language Studies in English.
  • Besides the existing norms of the University for Recognition as research supervisor/guide, the concerned teacher must have minimum three Research Papers published in National/International/ research journals on English language studies.

Research Advisory Committee

The research centre shall constitute the RAC as per the latest VCD of the University. The research advisory committee with the centre will scrutinise the proposal for research and will hold the formal presentation of the scholar and forward the recommendations to the RRC at the University.

A research proposal is a document explaining what you would like to research for your doctorate. It is important that the candidate knows about the particular requirements of the research centre before submitting their application. In general, the proposal should have the following:

The Title of the Topic Area

The title should be concise and descriptive. An informative but catchy title proves effective.

Research Area

The proposal should indicate the intended research area. The candidate might also refer to the way in which their own background and experience give them competence in their chosen area. They should avoid broad research areas as a PhD topic or one that has no relevance to the research areas of research supervisors registered with the University of Mumbai. Also, avoid vague descriptions of your research interests.

Rationale/Significance

An overview of the research question, explaining why it is of academic and or practical importance, should be provided. Focus on key questions within the candidate’s niche area to demonstrate that the proposed research is manageable and can be completed within the normal time period allowed.

The objectives should be formulated with the hypothesized conclusion of one's research in mind for a more cohesive research framework. Further, it is perfectly acceptable for the objectives to not be met due to incompatible research findings in the course of your research. However, this process should be detailed in your research work nevertheless.

Review of Literature

The proposal should demonstrate that the candidate is aware of existing debates and issues raised in relevant bodies of literature. They should indicate the importance of previous research in the concerned area. References to key articles and texts should be made to show that the candidate appreciates the relevance of those references to their research area. The proposal needs to indicate how the candidate’s project fits into the secondary literature/criticism on this topic as well as how their own research question might make a useful contribution to the area. Since any PhD is expected to be an original piece of research, you should be able to demonstrate that your proposed area has not been studied before or that it examines a previously studied area through a new perspective/methodology etc.

Research Method

The candidate needs to demonstrate an awareness of the methodological tools available to them and show some understanding of those suitable for their research. Descriptions of the method may include the design, procedures, the sample, and any instruments (interviews, case studies, modelling, etc.) that will be used, where applicable.

Plan Outline/Timeline

Add a plan for the work to be undertaken. It should explain roughly how long you would spend on each chapter, what each chapter may be about, etc. Also, give a tentative timeline of the proposed work. Please ensure that your timeline is realistic. It should not seem over-ambitious to potential reviewers.

Bibliography

You need to include a shortlist of references to key articles and texts.

Length of the proposal

The proposal should normally be 1500 to 2000 words long.

The demand for English scholars has been

growing, and the supply of English Ph. Ds is outpacing the demand. Students who are able to complete their degrees can work as editorial assistants for large publishing houses. Public relations officers and advertising agencies also seek out Ph.D. English graduates. Authors can take time to build their careers. Another good option is publishing books on scholastic subjects.

As with many fields, the career and future scope of English Ph.D. graduates is constantly changing and growing. In addition to increasing their employability, they can also use their research to improve society's ability to communicate and understand complex literature. With these skills, English Ph.D. graduates are well prepared for a variety of positions in educational administration, government, and new media.

The growth of for-profit institutions has created a shortage of English Ph.D. candidates. This shortage has caused an increased demand for advanced degrees in general education and English. This means English Ph.D. graduates will have to adapt to the demands of the for-profit world in order to find a job. For-profit companies are much more likely to assess candidates' performance than traditional academia.

A degree in English focuses on educating individuals in the art and science of writing. While traditional Ivory Tower jobs are disappearing, these graduates are still largely needed in society. With skills in communication, administration, and critical thinking, these graduates are a great choice for positions in government, education, and the new media. A good career opportunity for an English Ph.D. is guaranteed.

For those who have a Ph.D. in English, the possibilities are limitless. Despite the lack of traditional Ivory Tower jobs, the field is still growing and expanding in the humanities. As a result, English Ph. Ds have a variety of options in their fields. A degree in English is a valuable asset for many people, especially those who have a passion for writing, education administration, and the new media.

The job market for an English Ph.D. is huge, and the field of English is no exception. The degree will increase the scope of English-language work and help society improve the quality of language. Those with a Ph.D. in this field will be more well-equipped for administrative roles, while those with a Ph.D. in history will be in a position to teach, research, and write.

After earning a Ph.D. in English, students can go into a variety of fields. Some are in creative writing while others may choose to work in an academic library. They can become lexicographers or librarians. Generally, they can choose to write about different aspects of the English language. A doctorate in this field is a valuable qualification for any person interested in learning more about the language and its culture.

Mumbai Münster Institute of Advanced Studies (MMIAS)

The Mumbai Münster Institute of Advanced Studies (MMIAS) came into existence on 23rd November 2021, with the signing of an addendum to the long-standing MoU between the University of Mumbai, India, and the Westfälische Wilhelms University Münster (WWU Münster), Germany.

MMIAS is an international, interdisciplinary institute jointly administered and funded by the Mumbai and Münster Universities. It follows upon their earlier collaboration in the setting up of the International Diasporic Constructions of Home and Belonging (CoHaB) doctoral research training project that was funded by the Marie Curie ITN, European Union. This was followed by the second phase of CoHaB, the CoHaB Indian Diaspora Centre (CoHaB IDC) which functioned as a research centre and organized international and national level interdisciplinary conferences, seminars and workshops. The CoHaB IDC set up a Diaspora Studies Series under which it publishes research anthologies with contributions from national and international level scholars from diverse disciplines. Apart from collaborations with the WW University of Münster at the level of publications, teaching and conferences, the Centre has also collaborated with other centres and departments of the University of Mumbai and diaspora centres at universities in India as well as abroad. For more information on CoHaB IDC click here .

The MMIAS continues to foster these interests and accommodates even more collaborative and interdisciplinary activities, which are the need of the hour at the global level. This collaborative Institute is unique at Mumbai University and is the first such institute with a non-European partner at Münster University thus widening their joint global footprints.

The focus areas of the MMIAS – the political, social, cultural and economic value of Diasporas – are also at the cutting edge of academic studies and of wider interest to both India and Germany. The Indian Ocean is central to the revival of India’s interests and ongoing contributions to cultural links, trade and commerce in the Indian Ocean littoral states, so MMIAS targets these areas too in its research projects. The wider aspects of Asian Studies at WW University Münster are also central to the activities of the MMIAS.

1. International Interdisciplinary Lecture Series

MMIAS International Interdisciplinary Lecture Series are held in the following target areas:

  • Political, Social, Cultural and Economic Aspects of Diaspora Studies
  • Law and Literature
  • Cultural Links, Trade and Commerce in the Indian Ocean Littoral States
  • India’s Diplomatic and Security Role in the Indian Ocean Region
  • Asian Studies related specially to the History, Politics and Economics of South Asia
  • Other related Historical, Political, Diplomatic and Financial areas of Higher Research

These lectures are delivered by well-known experts in the field.

2.Workshops

MMIAS organises research student oriented workshops in the areas listed above.

3.International Conferences

MMIAS  organizes international interdisciplinary conferences. The themes of the conferences revolve around:

  • The Reflections of the Indian Diaspora in the 75 th Year of India’s Independence
  • The Indian Ocean as a Memory Space
  • The Contribution of the Kuchchhi Diaspora from India to the Development of East Africa
  • The Changing Face of the Indian Diaspora in the 21 st Century

These conferences are held jointly with collaborators in India, Germany, Kenya, and the USA.

4.Senior Fellowships

The MMIAS has instituted an annual Senior Fellowship. This fellowship is by invitation only and the Institute shall invite appropriate senior experts in the field. Public lectures by the Senior Fellow will be announced near the date of the event.

5.Junior Fellowships

The MMIAS has also instituted an annual Junior Fellowship. This fellowship is awarded to young researchers in the Institute’s core areas of critical concern. This fellowship is by application and interviews.

6.Internships:

The MMIAS encourages undergraduate/postgraduate/research students to work as interns at the institute for periods ranging from 1-3 months. Such internships would provide them with scholastic and research experience. In the process, they would also gain work experience in the administration of an international interdisciplinary research institute. Internships are by application and interviews.

7. Publications

MMIAS continues with the Diaspora Studies Series started during the CoHaB IDC period. SO far, two volumes – Beyond Borders and Boundaries: Diasporic Images in Literature and Cinema and The Past, Present and Post Diaspora: New Directions in Diaspora Studies have been published and the third volume – India 75: Reflections On and From the Indian Diaspora is forthcoming.

MMIAS draws upon the extant collaborations of CoHaB IDC and has also struck new ones.

The extant collaborations:

  • The Department of Law, Mumbai University ( Click Here for details) and the Law and Literature Project ( Click Here for details) at the WW Münster University have been collaborating for over a year with the CoHaB IDC in the organization of webinars and webcasts and research publications. This collaboration is further extended through the MMIAS at both the universities.
  • The Centre for Excellence in Maritime Studies, University of Mumbai ( Click here for details), has also collaborated with the CoHaB IDC in the context of several webinars on the Indian Ocean and the Diaspora. This collaboration is extended to include full-scale projects on the Maritime Indian Diaspora and the Indian Ocean as a Memory Space.
  • CoHaB IDC has been collaborating with the Department of English, University of Bayreuth, Germany, in the areas of migration and diaspora studies which the MMIAS shall extend through student and faculty exchange, joint research publications and projects.
  • CoHaB IDC has collaborated on a joint international interdisciplinary conference on Gandhi in Africa with the KSKV Kachchh University, Bhuj, India and the MMIAS is now considering joint research projects with the Kachchh University in the area of maritime diaspora from Kachchh to the Arab world and to East Africa.
  • The Diaspora Centre at the University of Hyderabad, India, has already collaborated with the CoHaB IDC through participation in conferences and webinars. The MMIAS will carry on with this collaboration and extend it to joint research projects and publications.

Series Editors:

Diaspora Studies Series is an interdisciplinary series developed by the Constructions of Home and Belonging Indian Diaspora Centre (CoHaB IDC), University of Mumbai. It focusses on cutting edge research produced in the context of the Diaspora at the intersections of literature, cinema, sociology, history, economics and politics. It encourages interaction between these disciplines in the context of the changing trajectories of diaspora studies in the new Millennium. The focus will inevitably be on the Indian Diaspora as it is the second largest diaspora today with over 26 million Persons of Indian Origins living in over a 100 countries around the world. With the globalisation of the Indian economy this diaspora is becoming increasingly visible in the host countries and of vital importance within the home country of India too. The Indian Diaspora today is also active politically, culturally and economically in its host lands and needs to be studied in all its varied aspects.

However other global diasporas, especially in the context of the new millennium, will also be under the scanner in this series, such as the Eastern European and Russian in the post-communist era. In this millennium we also have to deal with the issue of the displacement of thousands of men, women and children through wars in Syria, Yemen and other places in the Middle East. These refugees from violence and bloodshed are beginning to constitute new and often contentious diasporas in Europe and North America.  Political changes in the European Union, such as Brexit, have placed question marks on the continuing residence of countless European citizens in Britain and the possible backlash against British citizens living for generations in other European countries.

This series looks at classic diasporas as well as focus on diasporas in the new millennium where the older constructs of diaspora as a fixed construct with binary oppositions of old and new homelands has been replaced by more fluid constructs of transnationalisms. There is also the emerging trend of de-diasporisation and living in post-diaspora societies in for instance an economically resurgent India.

This series contributes to the rise and consolidation of the study of Diaspora in the New Millennium and provide fresh perspectives on older diasporic theories and emergent post-diaspora work. It will thus provide new and challenging perspectives from home, host and transnational locations.  Given its scope, the readership of the volumes in this series should be students, researchers and teachers of diaspora studies at universities around the world.

Launched on 25 July 2018 by Her Excellency Mukta Dutta Tomar, Indian Ambassador to Germany, at the Study India Day, WW University of Münster, Münster, Germany, the first volume in the – series is directed at adding new perspectives to the academic understanding of diaspora studies. This volume helps broaden the understanding of diaspora into the political, economic, socio cultural realms for researchers in this field. The voluntary or involuntary movement of individuals and groups across international borders results in a diaspora which could be caused by economic necessities, political incompatibilities, human aspirations, armed conflicts, trade and globalization. Diasporas could also be internal in the sense that they do not cross national boundaries. All these diasporas could result in identitarian crises and problems with acceptance from older, more settled populations. These problems take on new dimensions when the diasporic communities are challenged with the changing expectations of their own second and third generation descendants. All these issues are reflected in literature and cinema which has emerged from across such diasporic borders and boundaries.

In this volume, researchers from around the world have offered varied perspectives on the target areas. The articles analyse theoretical frameworks, literature and cinema and offer critique from ideological, socio-cultural and gender points of view. This volume isthus of interest to researchers and teachers of diaspora studies at universities around the world.

Since the past two decades, many researchers have made scholarly interventions with respect to defining ‘diaspora’. An overused, over theorized yet an uncontested term, scholars have now begun to not only use it as a collective noun but also an adjective, a verb and an adverb:   ‘diasporic’, ‘diasporization’, ‘post-diaspora’. In this volume we ask, what lies next? The basic focus of this volume is to examine, within an inter-disciplinary and an alternative framework, both the historical phenomena of ‘diaspora’ and contemporary alternative approaches to diaspora studies. It seeks to address the following questions:  What constitutes the discourse of diaspora and diasporic culture? What is the current state of diaspora studies and what are its trajectories of evolution? What’s next and are we thinking post-diaspora/post diaspora? How does the language of various disciplines like economics, mathematics, sociology, history and so on travel and intermingle to define and expand the contours of the notion of “diaspora”? How does the language of literature in the form of novels, poetry, short stories, plays, films, other forms of visual arts, social and mass media shape or define diasporic cultures? Who is representing them and how? What is the role of literary devices like allegory, fantasy, wit, satire, etc in representing particular diasporic trajectories and what is the result of such representations? Thus, this volume aims to be a part of a new emerging inclusive interdisciplinary research and promotes a dialogue to encourage development in diaspora studies.  The essays in this volume have been contributed by national and international scholars on diaspora studies.
