The skill of persuasion can be used to get better prices from merchants and persuade others to do as you ask.
Speech is a skill in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and is one of the six skills that falls under The Thief playstyle. This skill is a combination of both Speechcraft and Mercantile skills of previous Elder Scrolls games and replaces them. Speech may also help with quests by unlocking special dialogue interactions, including Intimidate, Persuade, Bribe, Mock, Brawl , and more.
Governing Guardian Stones : The Thief Stone
Speech directly affects the prices paid when buying from and selling to merchants , even without the assorted perks . At 0 Speech, merchants sell items for 3 times their base price, and buy for a third of their base price. At 100 Speech, merchants will sell items for twice their base price and buy them for half as much. Alternatively, Speech can be used to persuade people into doing things or divulging crucial information. Bribes made are also governed by Speech. There are 65 male and 45 female merchants in Skyrim, so Dragonborns interested in Allure have an advantage if they choose to be female.
The following are the perks that become available to select as the skill is leveled up:
Haggling (5) | Buying and selling prices are 10% better (+5% per additional rank) | |
Allure | Speech 30, Haggling | 10% better prices with the opposite sex |
Bribery | Speech 30, Haggling | Can bribe guards to ignore crimes |
Merchant | Speech 50, Allure | Can sell any type of item to any kind of merchant |
Persuasion | Speech 50, Bribery | Persuasion attempts are 30% easier |
Speech 70, Merchant | Can invest 500 gold with a shopkeeper to increase their available gold permanently † | |
Intimidation | Speech 70, Persuasion | Intimidation is twice as successful |
Fence | Speech 90, Investor | Can barter stolen goods with any merchant the Dragonborn has invested in |
Master Trader | Speech 100, Fence | Every merchant in the world gains 1000 gold for bartering |
† The way Investor seems to work is that the 500 gold ends up in the shopkeeper's personal inventory rather than the store inventory. Also, it seems like any gold in the shopkeeper's personal inventory is added to the store gold when calculating how much they can buy. This means two things:
Prices are computed by the following:
Skills over 100 have no effect.
The speech skill increase depends on the base value of the item traded or the difficulty of the bribe or persuasion. When selling items, it is not actually required to receive any gold, only that the transaction takes place. The skill increase only occurs once per transaction. In order to optimize leveling, expensive items in groups of 6 or more should be sold individually, rather than all at once.
The following books provide a permanent one-time increase to the Dragonborn's Speech skill. See each book's page for a list of possible locations.
The following quests increase or help to increase the Speech skill:
Bribing guards, persuading guards.
Similar to the above method, after progressing far enough into the Thieves Guild questline, the Dragonborn can commit a minor crime, such as failed pickpocketing or stealing. Once the crime has been committed, the Dragonborn can go up to a guard and initiate the "Wait, I know you." dialogue. Any option (aside from resisting or submitting to arrest) should be available to persuade them to overlook it. Though the guards says they will not let it slide the next time, they will never attack or arrest the Dragonborn (unless the submit or resist dialogue option was chosen).
Note: This will not remove the bounty, it will just stop the conversation peacefully, while slightly improving Speech. This can then be done to all of the guards in a Hold , but it should not be repeated on the same guard, as this can cause the option to go away. Instead, all the guards should be cycled through with the dialogue. This is especially useful at medium-high levels, since nothing has to be paid or sold, and the risk is practically zero.
Wearing the Aetherial Crown , obtain the blessings from the Lover Stone and the Thief Stone , and combine with Gift of the Gab and any rested bonuses (remove crown/lover stone before resting) will make leveling up Speech even faster (65% with the rested lover's comfort bonus, 60% with well rested). Note that only the Lover and Thief Stones, and Gift of the Gab may be used if the Dragonborn is infected with lycanthropy , as werewolves do not benefit from resting bonuses.
To increase the efficiency of this method get all the learning bonuses above, sell items in groups of 6 or more individually, get a necklace with the Fortify Barter enchantment or an Amulet of Zenithar , activate the Shrine of Zenithar , get The Gift of Charity and take a Haggling potion .
Get a large amount of high value items, in total the value should be tens of thousands of Septims or more. Stolen items are fine. If you have a large pile of otherwise useless items as the result of levelling Alchemy , Enchanting , Pickpocketing or Smithing that is perfect. Keep in mind that you will sacrifice these items to level Speech. Find a merchant who accepts your items. If your items are stolen this should be a fence and if you get better prices from the opposite sex make sure your merchant is. Now sell them items until the merchant runs out of gold. Now buy one or two items back. You will probably pay several times more than they gave you for it, but the seller has gold again. Sell the merchant some more items until they run out of gold again. Repeat this until you run out of items. This allows you to work around the otherwise limited gold merchants have because you are effectively giving it to them.
Persuade and intimidate calcelmo.
Those who deliver a Dwemer item to Calcelmo may both persuade/intimidate for a better deal and exit the conversation before selecting either, "Sold. Here you go. (Gain ___ gold)," or, "Not good enough. I'll hold onto this. You'll need to find another one." Intimidation requires 40 Speech to be successful; persuading requires 50. Each option can be performed once per item brought to him.
Ahkari's merchant inventory.
In Dawnstar , Ahkari's merchant inventory can be accessed through a glitch (see page for details). After placing all gold in the chest, all the items in inventory can be sold to the merchant. Doing this will give back the gold put into the chest. Afterward, the items can be retrieved from the chest and the process repeated forever. The net is no change to gold or items, but an increase in Speech skill.
During the Dark Brotherhood quest " Recipe for Disaster ," Anton Virane can be intimidated repeatedly to level Speech. This can be accomplished by:
This can be repeated forever.
During the " Dampened Spirits " quest, the Dragonborn can loop a conversation with Sabjorn to quickly level Speech. To do this:
During the Daedric quest "The Black Star," the Dragonborn can continually intimidate Nelacar in the Inn in Winterhold. When he asks "Who sent you?" choose the Intimidate option and immediately exit the conversation. This can be repeated indefinitely.
At anytime the Dragonborn can enter the Black-Briar Meadery where you will encounter the shop attendant Ungrien . Confront him and then repeatably persuade him to tell the truth about how he feels about his employer Maven Black-Briar. This glitch can be repeated indefinitely.
During the quest " Season Unending ", Ulfric Stormcloak can be persuaded to attend the peace council. If immediately left in dialogue following the persuasion attempt, the option can be used again.
Some items increase the Speech skill or bartering. These include:

Skills are the bread and butter of Skyrim , the one thing that truly defines a character. The skills in Skyrim can be roughly divided into three: Mage, Warrior, and Thief . While you can make your own mix of whatever skills you'd best like to use during your adventures, specializing in a certain skill category is always more beneficial in the long run.
In order to progress in your skills , you need to actually practice them. For players who want to train skills and level up faster, there are tons of Skyrim trainers in the mainland, Solstheim, and beyond, all willing to teach what they know in exchange for coin.
Updated January 19, 2024 by Erik Petrovich : Finding all Skyrim skill trainer locations can be tedious, as trainers of various skill ceilings are spread throughout the deeps and reaches of Skyrim (and some are locked behind DLC and questlines). But before worrying about finding all Skyrim skill trainers, it's a good idea to get a feel for what each skill actually contributes to a build. There's no point focusing on Illusion magic if you want to paralyze enemies and transmute items, and there's little use in training Block as a dual-wielding maniac. Each section in this guide to all trainers in Skyrim now includes some examples of what to expect from each skill tree, as well as more distinct groupings for each trainer's location.
There are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to using Trainers in Skyrim , especially if you plan to use them to max out a skill as fast as possible. Skills cost increasing amounts of gold to train as players level up, to the point that training one or two Skill Points can cost more than 10,000 gold.
However, this is also when leveling skills is most difficult as there is more XP required to rank up. Try to avoid training your main skills until at least after level 50, and instead use Trainers to level the skills you won't use too often but still come in handy, like Lockpicking or Block.
The world of Skyrim is filled with two-handed weapons. Here's a look are some of the absolute best available and how to get them.
Additionally, there is a limit to the number of times you can train at every level. Players can only use the services of a Trainer five times every level, which carries over across NPCs and skills. This means you can't get five skill-ups for every Skill at every level.
However, leveling up a skill with a Trainer still counts towards overall player level progression. Because of this, leveling up while training skills is a very common occurrence, essentially letting you improve a skill 10 times in a single session if you're close enough to the next player level.

Arcadia in Whiterun not only runs an ingredient store but also gives Expert level training.
In Morthal, Lami can give you Adept level training.
If you're an assassin of the Dark Brotherhood , young vampire Babette can teach you at Expert level. Owners of the Dragonborn DLC can head to Raven Rock and speak to Milore Ienth for Expert level training, too.

A high Archery skill unlocks the ability to zoom and slow time, deal extra damage with different types of shots, and grant a higher chance to recover ammo. Four trainers can be found in Skyrim , not counting Angi at Angi's Camp who gives a special quest related to Archery.
In Riverwood, Faendal can give you Adept level training.

If you'd like apparitions from other planes to assist you in battle, Conjuration is for you. This school lets players summon a Daedric companion, usually tied to an element, which can be extremely powerful for combat. But it's also a good school for those looking to improve their defenses as it lets a mage summon Bound Weapons and Bound Armor, temporarily.
Runil in Falkreath will give you the basics at Adept level.
After that, join the College of Winterhold to speak with Phinis Gestor, who will train you at Expert level.
In Morthal, Falion can also train you at Expert level.
If you own the Dragonborn DLC, Talvas Fathryon in Tel Mithryn can train you at Master level.
If the Dragonborn is looking to bulk up fast, these strategies can help them quickly take certain Skyrim skills to the top.

Drevis neloren | 0-90 (Master) | College of Winterhold | Must be a member of the College of Winterhold |
Illusion is a school of magic focused on tricking the enemy's mind and senses. Different from Alteration, Illusion is meant to confuse or bewilder targets, not necessarily actually change properties about them. An Illusionist, then, can scare enemies into submission, encourage their allies, and turn themselves "invisible". Only two trainers exist in Skyrim, and are not necessarily easy to access either .
If you're a member of the College of Winterhold, Drevis Neloren can teach you at Master level.
Alternatively, if you have access to Orsimer strongholds, you can speak to Atub at Largashbur for Expert level training.

If speed is your thing and you want to be light on your feet, Light Armor is ideal for you. Improving Light Armor improves one's ability to maneuver in a variety of ways, and its ultimate skill grants the wearer a chance to totally avoid melee attacks with a full set equipped.
Outside of Windhelm, you'll find an Argonian named Scouts-Many-Marshes who can give you Adept level training.
In Riften, Grelka offers Expert level training should you head to the marketplace.
If you're already part of the Dark Brotherhood, you can also seek out Nazir, who'll be happy to train you at Master level.

Ma'jhad | 0-75 (Expert) | Windhelm to Solitude Caravan | N/A |
Vex | 0-90 (Master) | Theives Guild | Must be a member of the Theives Guild |
No doors or chests will remain inaccessible should you invest in Lockpicking. Easy enough to level on its own due to how many locked chests there are in the world, only two trainers exist in all of Skyrim.
Vex from the Thieves Guild will train you at Master level, provided you're a member of the Guild.
If you happen to come across a Khajiit caravan, a Khajiit named Ma'jhad will also offer Expert level training.

If you'd like to overwhelm your enemies with speed, One-Handed is perfect. Two-Handed weapons can overwhelm a foe, but the One-Handed tree is more focused on speed and dextrous attacks, especially for Dual Wielding. This tree increases attack speed, reduces Stamina, and unlocks a few special attacks for One-Handed weapons alone.
In Whiterun, Amren can provide you with Adept level training.
Still in Whiterun, Athis, a member of the Companions, can give you Expert level training.
If you have access to the Orsimer strongholds, you can head over to Dushnik Yal and seek Master level training from Burguk.
There are a handful of daggers strewn throughout Skyrim that are incredibly powerful. Here's a look at the best of the bunch and where to find them.

Vipir the Fleet | 0-90 (Master) | Thieves Guild | Must be a member of the Thieves Guild |
Other people's belongings are now yours, through Pickpocketing. A higher Pickpocketing skill gives players a variety of bonuses to the minigame, like outright increased chance to succeed, but also the ability to pickpocket things onto your target, like poisoned apples. But it's risky to practice, and it's also hard to find someone who'll actually train you.
In Windhelm, you can ask Silda the Unseen to train you at Expert level. She'll usually be wandering around Candlehearth Hall.
In the Thieves Guild, Vipir the Fleet will train you at Master level.

Restoration is defensive, healing magic that can support you and your companions in battle. Though Skyrim isn't multiplayer, focusing on Restoration can still be helpful for supporting a group of summons, followers, or other "party" members – including friendly NPCs in scripted events. You can, of course, heal yourself very effectively with this school of magic, too.
For Adept level training, you can either speak to Keeper Carcette in Hall of the Vigilant or Aphia Velothi in Raven Rock if you own the Dragonborn DLC.
At the College, Colette Marence can train you at Expert level.
In Whiterun, Danica Pure-Spring in the Temple of Kynareth will train you at Master level after completing the quest The Blessings of Nature. Additionally, in Fort Dawnguard in the Dawnguard DLC, Florentius Baenius will train you at Master level.

Smithing allows you to create better armor and weapons in a variety of ways. Improving the skill unlocks more smithing options and the ability to make better gear, usually by unlocking a branch of smithing entirely – like Orcish weapons, Ebony armor, Glass gear, and more.
There are four Smithing trainers in all of Skyrim. Ghorza gra-Bagol is Adept level, and found in Markarth.
In Riften, you'll find Balimund, who's Expert level.
In Whiterun, Eorlund Gray-Mane is a Master level trainer for those who are members of the Companions. In Fort Dawnguard in the Dawnguard DLC, Gunmar is another Master level Smithing trainer.
The balance in each mainline Elder Scrolls game typically leans towards easy, but that doesn't mean that each title doesn't have tough moments.

An ideal skill for those who prefer to travel the shadows, Sneak is a staple for thieves. Improving one's ability to Sneak directly improves your ability to stay out of NPCs' sight and alert range, but also unlocks some new moves and th ability to deal extra damage with Sneak Attacks. Later on, high Sneak players can avoid triggering traps and even disappear from combat.
If you happen to catch a Khajiit caravan, try and find a Khajiit known as Khayla, who can train you in Sneaking at Adept level.
In Markarth, seek out Garvey who can give you Expert level training.
Head over to Riften's Ragged Flagon and speak to Delvin Mallory, who can train you at Master level.

Speech is the art of influencing others with your words, which in Skyrim means bartering and passing dialogue checks. By leveling Speech, one improves their ability to sell items for the right value, gains the ability to invest in stores, can sell more thanks to extra money at merchants, and improves your chance to succeed with Persuasion and Intimidation checks. While Speech is easy to level up by bartering with vendors, there are also five trainers in Skyrim to help you.
In Windhelm, Revyn Sadri can train you at Adept level. If you find a Khajiit caravan, seek out a Khajiit named Dro'marash, who can also train you at Adept level.
In Markarth, Ogmund from the Silver-Blood Inn will train you at Expert level, and owners of the Dawnguard DLC can ask Ronthil in Castle Volkihar to train them at Expert level too.
Giraud Gemane in Solitude's Bards College can train you at Master level.

Two-Handed swords are a classic choice for a fighter. While One-Handed weapons are made for fast, rapid attacks, nothing quite compares to the crushing might of a heavy Two-Handed weapon. Leveling this skill will increase damage, cause new effects, and unlock new attacks.
To level up fast, you can find Torbjorn Shatter-Shield in Windhelm who can provide you with Expert level training.
In Whiterun, Vilkar, a member of the Companions, will also train you at Master level.
Owners of the Dawnguard DLC can find Fura Bloodmouth in Castle Volkihar for Master level training and those with the Dragonborn DLC should find Wulf Wild-Blood in Skaal Village for Master level training.

Hundreds of books can be found in Skyrim. Most books provide backstory or cover lore material. However, there are three special types of books:
These special books are each listed on their own individual page.
Other types of reading material found in the game include scrolls and notes and letters . For books and notes added by Creation Club , see this page . A list of books broken down by subject can be found here .
Standard books in the game are all placed in one of five leveled lists, as provided on each individual book page.
The primary use of the book type is for books found in randomly-generated loot, including containers and some enemies (in particular, vampires and Warlocks ). These random books are level-dependent, as specified in the following table. The selection is also weighted to make List 0 books the most common books even at high levels. For example, at level 15 you have a 4 in 9 chance of finding List 0 books, a 3 in 9 chance of finding List 1 books, and a 2 in 9 chance of finding List 2 books.
In addition, the books stocked by Urag gro-Shub are determined by the book type. His inventory is not level-dependent; even List 4 books can be purchased from him at level 1. However, he only stocks a fixed number of books of each type, meaning that the chances of finding any specific List 4 book are very small.
Book Leveled List | Level | Chances | Out of | |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 4 | 4 | Stocks 10 | |
6 | 3 | 7 | Stocks 5 | |
12 | 2 | 9 | Stocks 3 | |
18 | 2 | 12 | Stocks 1 | |
18 | 1 | 12 | Stocks 1 |
Most books sitting out on bookshelves or lying around are randomly-generated. They are usually generated from a list named LItemBookClutter, which represents a combination of lists 0-2 with equal chances, but without Boethiah's Proving from list 2. Dawnguard adds The Aetherium Wars to it.
Standard books new with Dragonborn are placed into one of four lists ( 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ). Most random books found in the open are either from one of those lists, or a combination of those lists and a list from the basegame with the same number. Randomly generated treasure uses an evenly weighted combination of all four lists and lists 2-4 from Skyrim. The books sold by Fethis Alor are drawn from Dragonborn lists 1-4.

I've combined Reading Improves Speech and Books Books Books into one mod that adds almost 200 books and increases your speech skill for each book that you read. I've just begun making mods and I only have a few made, I'd appreciate any feedback for it! If you use popular mods that edit leveled lists, let me know and I can try to make a compatiblity patch for it.
Making this mod with almost no modding experience was like using glass to hammer in a nail. I learned why people hate the creation kit so much. That thing is abominable.
Character creation skills.
This page details an overview of the Speech skill in Skyrim, including recommended perks, leveling tips, and where to find Speech trainers.
Speech, Skyrim.
Speech determines the prices you get when buying and selling things, and determines your chances of success when attempting to persuade, bribe, or intimidate others. Speech perks also allow you to sell items to merchants who don’t peddle those wares, invest in a shop to increase their available gold, sell stolen items to merchants you’ve invested in, and even increase the money available to every merchant in the game.
As Speech is pretty much all about making more gold, you don’t necessarily need to spend any perks to increase combat effectiveness. But let’s not be hasty, I hear you say; what about the story and quest sides of Speech? Well… sadly even with a Speech score of 0 there was not a single situation where a Speech option was possible that couldn’t be overcome. Now, even with a score of 100 some characters will be unmoved by one attempt or another, but a character that isn’t moved by a Persuade attempt might be Intimidated, or failing that, Bribed. Since every quest can be done without spending any perks, why bother wasting perks? You’ll get enough gold without blowing perks in the Speech skill, and improving your Persuade/Bribe/Intimidate chances aren’t necessary.
There are really only two ways to level up Speech; succeed at Persuade/Intimidate/Bribe checks, or sell items. There are plenty of options to do the former throughout Skyrim, but aside from joining the Thieves Guild, committing minor crimes and getting caught, bribing your way out of trouble is the only somewhat reliable way to grind them, and even that’s limited.
Fortunately, you’ll generate tons of loot to sell when you’re performing the radiant quests for Vex and Delvin, and while leveling up the crafting skills. Just sell the items you steal or craft to Tonilia in the Thieves Guild (preferably after completing some of the quests to upgrade the Thieves Guild to increase her funds) to increase your Speech. Do so one item at a time, as this gets you more Speech experience than selling in bulk.
