This special collection from the Journal of Experimental Botany ( JXB ) celebrates the centenary of the Society for Experimental Biology (SEB), which founded the journal in 1950. To commemorate the SEB’s centenary, we commissioned a special series of Centenary Reviews from leading plant scientists that reflect the goals of the society and the diverse range of plant science topics published by JXB , including cell biology ( Meinnel and Giglione, 2022 ; Hartenstein et al ., 2023 ; McFarlane, 2023 ; Mencia et al ., 2023 ), crop molecular genetics ( Alseekh et al ., 2023 ), growth and development ( Beveridge et al ., 2023 ; Caumon and Vernoux, 2023 ; Loupit et al ., 2023 ), photosynthesis and metabolism ( Liebers et al ., 2022 ; Velikova et al ., 2023 ; Walsh et al ., 2023 ), and plant-environment interactions ( Hernández-Sánchez et al ., 2022 ; Munns and Millar, 2023 ; Oliveira et al ., 2023 ). In this special collection, we present these Centenary Reviews together with a selection of our flagship Darwin Reviews published in the last year.

JXB is published by Oxford University Press but continues to be owned and run by the SEB for the benefit of the plant science community. The SEB is a learned society for animal, cell, and plant biologists that was founded in 1923 at Birkbeck College in London to ‘promote the art and science of experimental biology in all its branches’ ( https://www.sebiology.org/who-we-are/about-us.html ). The SEB provides a forum for communication among its members, with a mission to disseminate their work to the broader scientific community and the general public. To this end, the SEB has founded a number of journals over the years, of which JXB was the first. Over the last 100 years, the SEB has grown from its roots in the United Kingdom to become an international society with members from around the world. The income from JXB and other SEB journals flows back into the scientific community, enabling the SEB to bring scientists together at its scientific meetings to exchange ideas and information, and to communicate their work to other scientists, governments, international agencies, and the general public. Making such connections is essential for tackling major problems associated with global climate change and growing human populations – to improve food security while conserving and restoring the natural world. In this special collection, we are pleased to present a selection of reviews reflecting the contribution of the journal to addressing these goals. We congratulate the members and officers of the SEB, past and present, on the society’s achievements in its first 100 years. JXB is honoured to be part of the SEB family, helping to support its work for the scientific community as it enters its second century.

“Quantitative Biology to Molecular Mechanisms” (formerly ”From functional genomics to systems biology”) aims to bridge the gap between technologies and scales, serving as a platform for the emergence of ideas and concepts to model complex biological systems. Leaders in genomics, functional proteomics, quantitative imaging, microscopy, and theory will gather to discuss their data and models, transcending their respective fields of expertise. The meeting will be bridging three interconnected themes where systems level approaches in molecular biology research are transforming our understanding of biological systems.

Conference-Service.com offers, as part of its business activities, a directory of upcoming scientific and technical meetings. The calendar is published for the convenience of conference participants and we strive to support conference organisers who need to publish their upcoming events. Although great care is being taken to ensure the correctness of all entries, we cannot accept any liability that may arise from the presence, absence or incorrectness of any particular information on this website. Always check with the meeting organiser before making arrangements to participate in an event!
