A Research Study and Czechoslovakian Wedding Pastries

  • 2 Extended plot
  • 3.2 Recurring

John suggests that Sheldon and Missy begin participating in a weekly twin study. Mary is concerned about possible effects on the children, but George likes the $300 that the study pays every week. Sheldon excels at the analytical tests, but has little patience for the tests of perceptiveness, while Missy is the opposite. She also suggests ways that her psychologist could make herself more attractive to her colleague. While monitoring the sessions, Mary learns that Missy feels a bit neglected, so she is given the choice of restaurant on the way home.

Extended plot [ ]

Older Sheldon narrates the tumultuous history between himself and his sister Missy. He mentions that when he was two years old he started reading books, while Missy tried to eat them. He then mentions that when they were five, he tried to have an organized work and play space, while Missy came in and trashed his workspace, just for kicks. In the same speech, he speaks of a much more recent and more positive interactions with her, specifically an incident where a spider was crawling around their bedroom. While Missy is focused directly on the spider, Sheldon is frantically standing on his bed. When she finally kills the spider, Sheldon has some doubts about whether it's dead or not. Then Missy shows her the shoe with the dead arachnid, causing him to run away screaming.

Dr Sturgis and Meemaw visit George with kolaches

Dr. Sturgis and Meemaw offer George a box of kolaches... with a catch.

Around the same time, George opens the front door to find a visit from Connie Tucker and Dr. John Sturgis who offers him a box of kolaches. However, there's an alternate motive to the gift and the visit, which Meemaw announces. George makes a sarcastic remark assuming that he's going ask for his mother-in-law's hand in marriage (When Dr. Sturgis doesn't get the joke, Connie admonishes him to finally ask his question). From there, Dr. Sturgis informs him that a study on the intelligence of both fraternal and identical twins is being carried out at a branch of East Texas Tech, and after mentioning Sheldon and Missy to his colleagues, they're quite interested in using the two as part of their studies. He almost considers offering to send his two twins to them, until he finds out the study is being conducted in Houston. Fortunately, Dr. Sturgis points out that the university is offering $50 an hour, plus fuel and other expenses, making George change his mind. Later that evening, George tells Mary about it. However, she is not sure and worries about Sheldon because she thinks he is already insecure due to his intelligence towards others. Likewise, if she worries about Missy getting along, she'll find that she's not as smart as Sheldon. George then tries to convince his wife and makes it clear that they could use the money for the later college of children well, but also secretly so that he can buy a motorboat for himself. At dinner together, George and Mary tell the twins this news. Georgie is slightly offended that the news doesn't apply to him. George reports that a study on twins is taking place at the university where John teaches and asks Sheldon and Missy if they feel like participating. While Sheldon is immediately excited, Missy has doubts. Mary immediately makes it clear that the two do not have to participate in the study, but George still tries to talk them both into it. While Sheldon is still eager to get involved, Missy is bribed by her father into a trip to a Dairy Queen franchise along the way, and ultimately agrees to participate in the study.

George, Mary, the twins, and Connie are escorted by John to meet two of his colleagues; Dr. Edward Thrope and Dr. Sandra Pilson. After a brief conversation, they ask Mary, George, and Connie for a conversation, which neither Sheldon nor Missy can understand. The doctors make clear that they want to catch up on background information about the children, which Sheldon finds very clever. He says that he was already more mature than his sister when he was an infant. Meanwhile, Connie asks John to take care of the twins. The latter promises to make an effort, but points out that he can not catch up with them if they run away.

As John waits with the twins, he reminisces about his childhood, because he himself once participated in a study. Sheldon assumes that John's parents also thought he was smart. But John denies that and tells them they were convinced that he was crazy. From there he tells them that Albert Einstein's parents were worried about him during his childhood because he wanted nothing to do with other children and often tended to burst out into tantrums. Missy interjects that this sounds like Sheldon, which he happily confirms. When talking to the doctors, Mary mentions that Sheldon never wanted to have anything to do with other children. The doctor then wants to know if there was anything unusual in pregnancy, which Mary denies. George reminds her of her crying, which lasted seven months; Mary, however, denies this and says that these were tears of joy. When they finally come to speak about Missy, she indicates that it is balanced. George, however, says she would occasionally bite, which Connie can confirm. Then she makes it clear that the doctors are wasting their time trying to find out anything about Mary and George and should start with the twins.

Drs Edward Pilson and Sandra Thorpe; Before and After Missy

Dr. Pilson and Thorpe, before (top) and after (bottom) meeting Missy.

Dr. Pilson tells Sheldon that the first test is about problem solving skills. The doctor appears surprised when Sheldon makes it clear that he already knows these tests. At the same time, Dr. Thorpe tells Missy the same purpose of the test. But before she can start, Missy makes some requests about her appearance in the videorecording, ranging from the position of the camera to whether or not she has food in her teeth. She also has a few questions that are less about the test but more about the doctor. Meanwhile, George, Mary, Connie and John in a next room watch a TV set up to monitor the testing process carried out on Sheldon and Missy. Unlike the others, Mary is not enthusiastic and does not want to see all that. George completely disagrees and is more impressed with his daughter's repartee. The feeling is mutual with Connie, who is rather bored watching Sheldon doing his test. On one of these videos, Missy reveals to Dr. Thorpe that Dr. Pilson has a crush on her, which Mary finds embarrassing. Though Dr. Thorpe tries to get Missy to focus on the test, she briefly inquires about what she knows about the other doctor. "When you're not looking, he stares at your tushie." Connie and Dr. Sturgis are equally impressed with her over this.

When the test is over, the two doctors ask the kids how they felt about doing it. Sheldon is pleased to that he was allowed to do a test on the weekend, while Missy is delighted to meet her own doctor, who she is very sympathetic toward. This returns the compliment and at the same time advised the hair to be worn down. After the Coopers leave, she awkwardly uses her hair to attract attention from her colleague, but it still works. Romance is in the air!

At home, Georgie watches an episode of "Soul Train" on TV when his family returns. Since Mary is still worried that the study is not good for Sheldon, she talks to George. Unlike her, he sees no problem in it and reminds his wife how much money they'll receive with the study.

A week later, the twins have more tests to show how empathetic the two are. More than dissatisfied Sheldon, who does not pay attention to the facial expressions on the pictures shown him. This also causes Mary to aggressively try to help her son. Meanwhile, Missy strikes herself great, as she shows a lot of empathy. Additionally, Dr. Thorpe is quite grateful for Missy's fashion advice, because she and Dr. Pilson are now romantically involved with one another. Although Mary is proud of her daughter, she must hear that she feels incredibly lonely and therefore has a good empathy. Shocked, she tries to make amends and offers Missy to select a restaurant. Much to the chagrin of George (and the delight of Meemaw), Missy selects a Red Lobster franchise, convincing him that his chance of getting a motorboat are now lost.

In the evening, Missy reveals to her father that she knows that there is money for the study and wants a fair share. George, however, tricked her, leaving his daughter to run to Sheldon for help with the math. Shortly thereafter, Georgie asks his father to change the channel, hoping to see the Soul Train dancer he has developed a crush on, and even hopes to marry someday. Annoyed, George finally switches to the desired program.

Young Sheldon – “A Research Study and Czechoslovakian Wedding Pastries” Review

When we last left Sheldon Cooper, he was finally relieved of a secret that ended up involving MeeMaw, George Sr, and Gorgie. This week in “A Research Study and Czechoslovakian Wedding Pastries”, we dive into the Sheldon and Missy’s similarities and differences. The episode opens with Adult Sheldon discussing how much better of a twin he was when they were younger, but how he really does admire some qualities Missy has. His favorite being her spider killing ability.

Dr. Stergis comes over to the Cooper house with MeeMaw to discuss putting Sheldon and Missy in a twin study that his colleagues are running at the University in Houston. George Sr is adamant about saying no since he doesn’t want the children harmed in any way. When the Doctor assures him that they only have to answer questions and do puzzles, George Sr. still isn’t convinced.  It isn’t until Dr. Stergis drops the fact that it’s paid per hour and gas is reimbursed that George Sr. is on board. He then manages to get Sheldon’s mother on board. After convincing her that the money will go to the kid’s college funds, they next have to convince Missy. After all, Sheldon is super excited to learn he will be in a research study. Missy is eventually bribed to go after demanding an Oreo Blizzard Milkshake. That’s my kind of girl!

When they arrive at the University, the scientists want to speak to the parents. It’s clear that Mary is trying to make them seem as normal as possible. As MeeMaw says “They are scientists. You can’t trick them.” Sheldon is a genius with tantrums and Missy is happy go lucky until she bites you for touching her food. Every kid has their quirks. As the testing begins, fans can clearly see that Missy and Sheldon are polar opposites. Sheldon is completely enjoying this research study and is getting along with his tester. Missy, on the other hand, is taking her sweet time doing the study. She asks the tester to move the camera to her good side. She compliments the tester and gives fashion advice. She even goes so far as to tell her tester that Sheldon’s tester has a crush on her. Neither kids know this but the adults can see both kids the entire time. When the study ends, we see everyone happy including Missy’s tester who has taken some of her advice. As the kid’s exit, the audience is shown that Missy was indeed correct about the testers.

The family returns home from the study to find Georgie watching Soul Train which confuses Sheldon to no end. Meanwhile, Mary and George Sr talk in the backyard about the study and its effects on Sheldon. He can’t stop talking about how smart he is. Mary doesn’t want to continue even after George Sr tells her they made $300 cash, but ultimately they return the following week. This week’s test is talking about what’s happening in a picture the tester is holding. Within minutes it’s clear they have found Sheldon’s kryptonite. Sheldon points out everything wrong about the photo, while Missy tells a story. He eventually gets really frustrated with the tester and screams “Poppycock” when he is told there are multiple types of intelligence! Meanwhile, Missy is told she is extremely perceptive and see things people miss. I loved her reply “My name is Missy. Go figure.” She goes on to explain that it must be because she’s “on her own”. She elaborates further that Georgie and George Sr have football, and Mary and MeeMaw tend over Sheldon. So she is usually left to fend for herself. When the camera goes back to the adults, you can tell this hurts Mary to the core. So on the way home, Missy is allowed to choose where she wants to eat for dinner much to George Sr and Sheldon’s dismay. When Sheldon starts to protest, Mary lets him have the saying that all children with siblings have heard at least a dozen times, “It’s not all about you in this house.” Missy is surprised and happy. Her choice? Red Lobster! The episode ends with Missy confronting George Sr about getting her fair share of the study money. When she is asked what’s half of $7.50, of course, she runs to find Sheldon.

I thought this was another great episode of Young Sheldon. It was really awesome to see this side of Missy and how they emphasized more on her this episode. We all know Sheldon loves research studies so the episode would have been really boring just concentrating on him. His outburst against the test Missy succeded in it only helped show how intelligent she really is.  By focusing on Missy, it is really widening this series and making you care about everyone in the Cooper family. I hope the creators continue to showcase each of the Cooper kids. It’s helping understand how we got the Adult Sheldon Cooper that we love on The Big Bang Theory. Young Sheldon season 2 episode 5 is titled "A Research Study and Czechoslovakian Wedding Pastries." This episode centers around Sheldon's academic pursuits and how those pursuits sometimes impede his ability to connect with others.

The main plot of the episode centers around Sheldon's participation in a research study. After discovering that a graduate student in the physics department is conducting research on gifted children like him, Sheldon eagerly signs up to participate. As part of the study, Sheldon is given a series of tests and asked to complete various tasks in order to measure his intelligence and overall academic abilities.

However, as Sheldon becomes more and more invested in the study, he begins to neglect his friendships and relationships outside of the academic world. He turns down invitations to hang out with his friends and instead spends the majority of his time studying and working on the research study.

Meanwhile, Meemaw is preparing for a big fundraising event at her church, where she plans to sell her famous Czechoslovakian wedding pastries. However, when she realizes that she won't be able to complete the task alone, she enlists the help of Georgie and Missy. Both of them are hesitant at first, but eventually come around to the idea of helping their grandmother out.

Throughout the episode, viewers see how Sheldon's intense focus on academics can sometimes make him difficult to be around. Overall, "A Research Study and Czechoslovakian Wedding Pastries" is a lighthearted episode that explores the difficulties of balancing academic pursuits with social relationships. Viewers get a glimpse into the inner workings of Sheldon's mind as he navigates the challenges of growing up as a gifted child, and see how his friends and family respond to his intense focus on academics. Despite its serious subject matter, the episode is filled with plenty of laughs and heartwarming moments, making it a must-watch for fans of Young Sheldon.

Young Sheldon S 2 E 05 A Research Study And Czechoslovakian Wedding Pastries » Recap

"A Research Study and Czechoslovakian Wedding Pastries" is an episode of Young Sheldon that first aired October 18, 2018.

  • Middle Child Syndrome : When asked if she's always been so perceptive, Missy attributes her skill to not being on a "team", with George Sr. and Georgie connected through football, while both Mary and Meemaw are always focused on Sheldon's upbringing. Upon watching this in the study's recordings, Mary tries to help Missy feel more included by asking her what restaurant she wants the family to go to for dinner.
  • No Social Skills : Sheldon's lack of social awareness is highlighted in the second round of the study, when he's shown drawings of people and animals acting like people while being asked to interpret their situations, and gets frustrated when his literal answers aren't enough. Missy, in comparison, identifies all of the depicted situations perfectly but is then a tad too forward asking the doctor testing her about their relationship with another doctor.

The researchers begin by talking to Mary, George, and Meemaw. They then take Missy and Sheldon and start running their tests. This round is on fact-finding. Missy is delightfully being herself, while Sheldon is in his glory taking a test on a Saturday.

Despite Mary’s reluctance, they go back to the study. This time, the focus is on social conventions. Missy is doing very well. Sheldon is not. He doesn’t get the point of this test and gets upset when the researcher reveals that there are different types of intelligence. Missy reveals that she feels like she’s alone in the family which upsets Mary. On the way home, Missy gets to pick where they go to eat.

'Young Sheldon' Recap "A Research Study And Czechoslovakian Wedding Pastries"

I enjoyed this episode so much. Missy might be my favorite character. That’s probably because she reminds me of myself when I was younger (I will still do anything for a Blizzard), but she also has some really funny lines and Raegan Revord’s timing is impeccable. Also, that kolache, it looks delicious but I had to Google it. The dessert is accurate in the episode, I’m just used to a more roll-like Kolache, which, according to Google is a Hungarian version.

When Beth “grows up” she wants to see her creations appear on the screen and stage. In her free time, Beth blogs about her love of craft beer and writes screenplays. She received her bachelors in journalism from Youngstown State and received her masters in communication from The University of Akron. She is honored to be a part of the FanFest family.

Young Sheldon – A Research Study and Czechoslovakian Wedding Pastries

By: Ujjyani Banerjee

The episode opens with adult Sheldon (Jim Parsons) recollecting how different he and Missy have been since childhood. At two years old he read book while Missy (Raegan Revord) ate them. At five years old he was organized while she liked things messy. Nonetheless, he admires her innate fearlessness, something he’s always lacked. Adult Sheldon feels that twins share an incredibly close bond and that’s the reason why he moved 1500 miles away to California.

Coming back to young Sheldon days, Connie (Annie Potts) and John Sturgis (Wallace Shawn) come to get George’s (Lance Barber) permission on allowing Missy and Sheldon (Iain Armitage) to participate as volunteers for a “research study on twins” at John’s university in Houston. They’d be tested via questionnaires with stipend of $50/hr and all travel expenses. Though apprehensive about the location first, George eventually agrees. He goes to Mary (Zoe Perry) to persuade her. She’s worried about Sheldon self-consciousness and Missy’s low self-esteem. However, the helpful remuneration makes her give a nod. At dinner, upon learning about written tests and puzzles involved at the volunteering, Sheldon is already sold. To persuade Missy, George tells that she can have that Oreo Blizzard at the Dairy Queen on their way. This does it for Missy. She’s in.

At the center Sturgis introduces the Coopers to the scientists – Dr. Thorpe (Amy Farrington) and Dr. Pilson (Wallace Langham). They approach the elders for background information while Sturgis babysits the twins. Mary reveals Sheldon mixes less with friends his age. George speaks about Sheldon’s temper tantrums which, according to Mary, is voicing out opinions.  Connie mentions Sheldon’s yelling, stomping and unhinging of door knobs. Mary gives her a look, but Connie feels scientists can’t be fooled. Switching to Missy, Mary shares her outgoing and friendly nature. When asked if she’s got temper tantrums as well, Mary says she’s rather even-keeled. George points out her violent side that surfaces while she’s eating and that she could chomp fingers off if someone gets a hand near her face. Mary disagrees; Connie immediately reveals her wrist bite mark crafted by Missy on Thanksgiving, circa 1986.

Dr. Thorpe asks Mary if she had any pregnancy complications with these two. Mary denies it, but George remembers her crying for seven months. To Mary they were tears of joy. When Gorge asks about her punching, Mary says they were punches of joy!

Next, the scientists start testing the twins separately on problem-solving. They’re being filmed so that the elders can watch. Sheldon starts off the questionnaire immediately and asks pretty intelligent questions which impresses Dr. Pilson, his scientist, while Missy counsels her scientist, Dr. Thorpe, on fashion and her camera angles. She also points that the other scientists have a crush on her. Being a woman too, the scientist starts appreciating Missy’s free tips and bonds well with her subject. On the other side, Connie is having fun watching her granddaughter throw in her iconic Missy shade. Mary and George remain wide-eyed watching Missy’s side and feel low-key proud of Sheldon who’s clearly winning the round.

After the session Dr. Thorpe, who’s gotten a beautiful new hairdo, gets complimented by Dr. Pilson. She asks him out for drinks after work who is happy with the invitation.

At home Georgie (Montana Jordan) is transfixed on this girl’s dance moves he’s watching on TV. Missy and Sheldon join him. Sheldon asks what he’s watching and Georgie tells it’s called Soul Train . Sheldon mentions he loves trains too and his adolescent brother immediately points this out to be an entirely different type of train. Complaining it to be false advertising, Sheldon starts mimicking the girl’s moves.

George here is busy appreciating a woman in the newspaper. He stuffs the paper under his chair in a reflex as soon as Mary storms in. She’s worrying about Sheldon’s escalating pride. George tells her to remember the three hundred dollars in cash that’s helping them. Though Mary doesn’t like the idea of profiting off their children, she understands the monetary worth and drops the complaint. George goes back to complimenting the newspaper woman.

Next week Dr. Pilson’s shows a picture with four chimpanzees hanging out in a living room and asks Sheldon to explain what he sees. He describes it quite literally without focusing on the underlying message at all. Missy; however, gets the undertones of how it depicts a living room tea party where two monkeys are apparently doing some adult talk as mother monkey is sending her kid away to prevent him from listening to all that and there’s a picture of a late Meemaw monkey hanging on the wall.

Another picture is shown wherein a scorned woman is standing by the doorway. According to Sheldon, it’s a girl standing at the doorway holding her head with her hand. According to Missy, the girl’s sad probably because she’s not been invited to the monkey’s house for a tea party. Missy also finds the girl’s belt very cute, kinda like Dr. Thorpe’s belt. She also compliments Dr. Thorpe’s new hairdo. Loving all the praises pouring in, she thanks Missy.

Dr. Pilson shows another picture of a thoughtful lion seated in an armchair holding a tobacco pipe. Sheldon, who’s already had enough of this session’s absurdity, just picks up all factual stuff: a random lion sitting on a chair probably trying to figure out why’s he posing for a silly picture instead of eating a gazelle.

Sheldon’s mad as his smartness is not being tested with this. Dr. Pilson tells him that different types of intelligence exist. Sheldon argues that there’s only one type of smartness that exists.

Missy receives praise for being insightful and being able to grasp what other people miss. Missy tells being alone helps her spot these things fast. Her dad plays football with Georgie so they’re like a team. Mom and Meemaw keep fussing over Sheldon so that’s another team. She’s left alone. Mary hurtfully realizes how ignorant they’ve all been towards her daughter.

While going home, Mary suggests stopping somewhere for dinner. George feels five of them dining out would be a pricey affair, but he has to agree when Connie mentions his expensive fishing boat purchase. Mary lets Missy pick the restaurant and Sheldon gets jealous. Missy picks Red Lobster. George is left cringing and muttering under his breath.

Back home in the evening George and Georgie are watching TV. Missy barges in demanding her half from the research work earning and asks George about the net amount. He bluffs it to be $7.50/week and asks her the amount she should be getting. That’s a big calculation for Missy. She asks him to wait as she stomps off to get it solved by her twin genius.

Georgie here asks dad if he they can watch Soul Train . He asks why? Georgie reveals to his father that there’s a girl in there he kinda wants to marry. Puzzled at his genuinely nodding son, George flips the channel.

Quotes

Sheldon Cooper : [Dr. Pilson shows Sheldon part of a psychological test]  A lion sitting in a chair, holding a pipe.

Dr. Edward Pilson : Good. But what do you think is on his mind?

Sheldon Cooper : How should I know? Maybe he's wondering why he's posing for a silly picture instead of eating a gazelle.

Dr. Edward Pilson : Anything else?

Sheldon Cooper : What exactly are we doing here? I thought the purpose of this study was to find out how smart I am.

Dr. Edward Pilson : That's what we're doing, but there are different kinds of intelligence.

Sheldon Cooper : Poppycock!

Dr. Edward Pilson : Okay, Sheldon, this first battery of tests measures basic problem-solving abilities.

Sheldon Cooper : Is it the Kaufman test or the Wechsler Intelligence Scale?

Dr. Edward Pilson : Are you familiar with those?

Sheldon Cooper : It's embarrassing, but I enjoy a little light reading in the bathroom.

I hope Missy makes an appearance on BBT and is doing well before it ends (but it's doubtful).
