Case Study A

You plan to visit a friend who lives in a town a full day’s drive away.

Two weeks before your journey, you realise that your vehicle excise license (road tax) will expire while you’re away.

At the beginning of the journey, you reach a roundabout. Another car cuts in front of you, causing you to do an emergency stop.

Later, you join the motorway, where a red X is flashing above the outside lane.

While travelling along the motorway, you start to feel tired and stop at a service station.

It’s just after 11 pm when you park outside your friend’s house.

Why must you avoid using your horn when parked outside your friend's house?

What should you do at the roundabout, what must you do on the motorway, what should you do two weeks before you leave, what should you do at the service station.

In order to drive professionally you must also pass the driver CPC case study test (also known as the Driver CPC case study theory test - Step 2). Both the truck and the bus case study tests ask you to look at three real-life situations a professional driver might face.

Each case study test is computer-based and user-friendly, and works as follows:

  • you will be asked 15 questions on each of three real-life driver situations
  • to pass you must score at least 5 out of 15 in each situation and have an overall score of at least 28 out of 45.

You can prepare for the case study test by reading and learning the Rules of the Road. There are a wide range of official printed, digital and online learning materials available.

Case study test learning resources

To prepare for your case study test you should study the following:

  • The Official driver theory test truck and bus book , available online or in most book shops
  • The Rules of the Road

The RSA also has  approved Driver CPC Trainers  who can help you pass the CPC case study test.

How to book your case study test

If you want to become a category C (CPC truck) or category D (CPC bus) driver you must pass a case study test.

You must have passed the Driver CPC theory test (Step 1) in the relevant category before you can sit your case study test.

You have the option to sit it at any of the  40+ theory test centre locations nationwide.

If you're ready, you can go ahead and book your case study test online now.

Book, reschedule or cancel a CPC theory (case study) test

Rescheduling or cancelling your case study test

You can reschedule or cancel your case study test online.

You must submit your cancellation or rescheduling request at least five days before your test booking. These five days must include three working days.

Your case study test result

When you complete your case study test you will be given a score report. This will tell you whether you have passed or failed your test.

If you've passed

When you pass the case study test you are issued with a driver CPC case study test certificate. This is valid for up to two years. You should apply for a learner permit within that time. After two years the certificate will no longer be valid and you will have to pay for and sit the case study test again.

If you're unsuccessful

If you're unsuccessful at your case study test, you'll get a score report with feedback telling you where you went wrong. Pay attention to these areas as they will help with your revision and give you a better chance of passing next time.

You can  book another case study  test straight away, but you can't take it for another three clear working days.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. But we would not recommend this as the multiple choice theory test can take up to 3 hours to complete (depending on which theory test you have applied for) and the case study test takes 1.5 hours to complete.

How To Book The Theory Test

How You Take The Test

You take the test using a touch screen computer. You will have a fifteen-minute practice session before the test begins, which will give you all the information you need to take the test correctly and familiarize yourself with the touch screen controls. If you have any problems, a member of staff will assist you.

Only one question will appear on screen at a time, and you will be able to navigate backward/forward through the questions assessing answers and changing them if necessary. Unanswered questions will show at the end of the test on the Review Screen.

You will be able to return to any unanswered questions to provide an answer. To select or deselect an answer, press the box next to the answer.

So you know how much time remains to complete the test, a countdown counter will show in the top right-hand corner of the screen.

As some questions require more than one answer, the system will warn you if you try to move to the next question without giving the correct number of replies.

If you complete the test before the allotted time, you can end the test by pressing the Review Button followed by the End Button.

The images below show a screenshot of the Question and Review Screens. The Review screen appears after question fifty, or by pressing the Review Button on the Question Screen.

Theory Test Touch Screen Computer

The Pass Mark

You will need to answer 43 of the 50 questions correctly. A pass mark of 86%.

Test Duration

You have 57 minutes to complete the test. The computer will indicate throughout how much time remains.

It will cost £23. This price includes the hazard perception test. Make sure you book your test directly with the DVSA.

Do not use a third-party booking service, as these will charge you more than the DVSA charge. Don't be fooled by offers such as free re-tests, as there may be terms and conditions that make getting a free re-test difficult.

Documents You Must Bring

Take to the test centre both parts of your provisional licence - the photo card and the paper counterpart. If you fail to present these documents, the test centre will cancel your test and offer no refund.

You should also take your appointment card or booking number.

Hearing and Reading Difficulties

If you have trouble reading the questions, you can apply to have the test extended for up to twice the normal time, and you can listen to the questions via a voice-over. You will need to provide a letter from a suitable person, such as a doctor, who can confirm your reading difficulty. You can arrange this when you book your test.

If you are deaf or have other hearing difficulties, the multiple-choice part and the introduction to the hazard test can be delivered in British Sign Language by an on-screen signer. A BSL interpreter, signer, or lip speaker can also be provided. You will need to request this when booking.

The Results

You will receive your results before you leave the theory test centre.

If You Fail the Test

You will have to wait a minimum of three working days before retaking the test. You can, however, apply to take it the day after your initial failure.

Change Your Test Date and Time

If you want to change the test date, you can do so for free. However, you must give at least three working days' notice.

Cancel Your Test

You can cancel your theory test appointment and receive a full refund if you give three working days' notice. You can do this online or over the phone.

THEORY TEST CASE STUDIES

case study driving theory test

The case studies section of the UK driving theory test is designed to assess your ability to apply your knowledge of road rules and safe driving practices in real-world scenarios.

You will be given one case study with five multiple-choice questions. The case study section is meant to test your understanding of driving theory and how you would apply it in practical situations. The scenario will be based on a real-life situation that you could face, such as dealing with adverse weather conditions, managing road rage, or responding to emergency situations.

It is important to prepare thoroughly for the case studies section of the driving theory test by studying the Highway Code and practicing with mock tests. This will help you to feel confident and prepared when taking the test, and increase your chances of passing first time.

Theory Test Case Study

Part of the multiple choice section of the DVSA theory test is presented as a case study. Case studies are also part of this mock theory test designed to replicate the real test.

A case study is a scenario involving a set of circumstances that are based around events that might happen in real life. You will be asked some questions based on these circumstances.

As you move through the case study, you will be presented with multiple choice questions but the same scenario also presented on screen. Questions may also be accompanied by a picture.  If you wish, you can leave a question and come back to it later, just like the real theory test.

Below is an example of what you can expect in the case study part of the theory test.

Below are two case study scenario and question examples from the mock theory test.

C1 Driving Test: Theory & Practical Preparation Guide

C1 Driving Test

If you feel restricted by the category B licence, you may have looked into the C1 driving licence. This HGV licence allows you to drive medium-sized lorries, motorhomes and other vehicles under 7.5 tonnes (7,500 kg). But to acquire this entitlement, you must pass the C1 driving test. That’s what this article is all about. We’re set to cover everything you need to know about the C1 test, helping you prepare for the theory and practical sections.

Table Of Contents

  • 1 Requirements For The C1 Driving Test

Requirements For The C1 Driving Test

An Empty Medium Sized Truck Awaiting Loading

Before getting to the main part, let’s start with the driving test requirements. To apply for the C1 test, the eligibility criteria are that you must be at least 18 years old and have a standard Category B driving licence to show that you are capable of driving smaller vehicles under 3.5 tonnes (3,500 kg).

You’ll also need to pass the LGV medical test. This test serves to evaluate your health, eyesight and other conditions that could impact your driving ability. The LGV medical examination can be conducted by your local GP or private doctor.

If you’re interested in driving vehicles beyond 7.5 tonnes, you should check out our blog post on the Category C licence .

C1 Theory Test

After the licence application process comes the C1 test, which you must pass to get a C1 licence . The C1 driving test is separated into two sections. The first part comprises theory tests designed to assess your knowledge of the Highway Code and other driving rules. The theory tests are made up of multiple-choice questions, case studies and a hazard perception test.

  • Multiple-choice theory test: The multiple-choice theory test costs £26 and you’ll be faced with 100 questions that cover topics like traffic signs, driving theory, vehicle handling and control, driver and road users’ safety and vehicle loading. You must answer 85 questions correctly to pass this section.
  • Hazard perception: The hazard perception test costs £11 and involves you watching 19 one-minute clips to spot developing hazards. You must identify the hazards as early as possible to score points. Passing this section requires a minimum score of 67 out of 100 points.
  • Case study test: After the hazard perception test comes the case study theory test. You’ll need to shell out £23 for this test, which comprises 50 questions. The pass mark for this section is 80%.

You must have been a UK resident for at least 185 days during the previous 12 months to take these theory tests.

C1 Practical Test

After the theory test, you’ll take on the practical test, which will set you back £115. This test will assess your ability to drive C1 vehicles safely and includes various components like vehicle safety, practical driving, reversing exercises and unloading.

The safety test commonly known as ‘ Show me, Tell me ’ involves you performing vehicle safety checks like checking the oil level, testing the lights and examining the tyres. You’ll also explain how to check vehicle brakes. The following sections will have you drive in various road and traffic conditions and perform manoeuvres to show your control and precision.

You can pass the first part of the C1 practical despite making mistakes, as you’re allowed up to 15 minor faults but no major faults. Minor faults are regarded as less serious and involve small, common mistakes, while major faults are those that indicate a significant risk to safety.

See our article, where we provide deep insight into the dimensions of 7.5-tonne lorries .

Tips For Preparing For The C1 Driving Test

Two Trucks In Motion

The C1 driving test doesn’t have to be very complex. You can pass with proper C1 test preparation.

  • Master the Highway Code. The Highway Code forms the foundation of safe driving. Get a copy and study the rules and regulations relevant to the C1 category.
  • Take training courses and use online resources or revision apps that offer mock tests designed for the C1 theory section. This will help you identify areas that need improvement and build confidence.
  • Get familiar with the C1 vehicle you’ll be using for the test. Understand the controls, instrument panel and dimensions of the vehicle.
  • Take regular lessons with a qualified driving instructor. The instructor will guide you through essential manoeuvres and driving techniques before the test.
  • Focus on developing smooth and safe driving habits. This includes minimising gear changes, maintaining a steady speed and taking corners safely.
  • Finally, master the pre-drive checks , as this is one of the most overlooked parts of the practical test.

What Happens After Passing The C1 Test?

After passing the C1 test, you’ll get your driving licence. The Driver and Vehicle Licencing Agency (DVLA) will process the licence and send it to you within 10 to 15 days after passing the test. Once you receive your licence, you’re ready to legally drive different types of C1 trucks on the road. However, keep in mind that you’ll also need a Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) if you plan to drive for pay in the UK.

What’s more, you have to keep up with maintaining your Category C1 driving licence (for drivers over 45 years old). You don’t have to worry about renewing your licence when you’re under 45, but when you cross this age limit, you need a medical assessment every five years. The frequency of the renewal increases to every three years when you turn 70.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible to take a c1 driving test.

Anyone who is 18 and has a category B driving licence is eligible to take the C1 driving test. You’ll also have to pass a medical examination from a doctor to ensure you meet the physical and mental health standards for C1 vehicle categories. You must have applied for the provisional C1 licence and previously practiced with a C1 vehicle.

What Is The Difference Between A C1 And A C1+E Driving Licence?

The difference between a C1 and a C1+E driving licence is their towing capacity . Both licences allow you to drive different sizes of lorries up to 7.5 tonnes (7,500 kg). However, you can only tow trailers with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) of up to 0.75 tonnes (750 kg) with a C1 licence. With a C1+E, you can tow trailers exceeding 0.75 tonnes but the combined weight of the vehicle cannot be more than 12 tonnes (12,000 kg).

Do I Need A Category B Driving Licence To Apply For The C1 Driving Test?

Yes , you need a Category B licence to apply for the C1 licence. The Category B licence is the standard driving licence in the UK, allowing you to drive cars and other vehicles under 3.5 tonnes in MAM. In addition to this licence, you need to pass a medical exam to get your provisional C1 driving licence and register for the test.

How Long Does The C1 Practical Driving Test Take?

The C1 practical driving test takes 1 hour and 30 minutes . This time covers all the components of the test, from vehicle safety and reversing to manoeuvres. The time may slightly vary, depending on how the test progresses with your examiner. If your test involves a trailer (like the C1+E), this exercise will take an additional 10 to 15 minutes.

Do I Need An LGV Medical Test To Apply For The C1?

Yes , you need an LGV medical test to apply for the C1 licence. The test serves to ensure that you’re medically fit to drive vehicles in this weight class. To sign up for the test, obtain the D4 medical form from the Driver and Vehicle Licencing Agency (DVLA) website. Then you can book an appointment with your local GP to carry out the test.

The C1 driving test isn’t just about obtaining a licence. It aims to demonstrate that you have the skills to drive large vehicles safely. So make sure to enjoy the process and learn everything you need to. You can also continue your learning through additional training programmes to further improve your driving skills.
