Friday Night Plan Review:

Friday Night Plan Review: A Fun and Frothy Sibling Comedy
Director: Vatsal Neelakantan
Writer: Vatsal Neelakantan
Cast: Babil Khan, Amrith Jayan, Aadhya Anand, Medha Rana, Ninad Kamat, Juhi Chawla
Duration: 1h 49m
Streaming on: Netflix
It’s a little disorienting to watch an Indian high-school drama that has no murder, sex, drugs, violence, abuse, class rage and general depravity. But Friday Night Plan , directed by Vatsal Neelakantan, is that rare streaming-era film. It has some alcohol, but let’s just say that if this movie were a person, it’d be the designated driver in a group of wine connoisseurs. Friday Night Plan is so light and breezy that I didn’t need to draw my curtains and switch on the ceiling fan all day. It’s so vanilla that a group of chocolate brownies rang my doorbell. It’s so frothy that…never mind, the puns sounded smarter in my head. On a serious note, it’s a welcome antidote to shows like Class and School of Lies : The one-night-only premise of American teen comedies marries the sanitized tone of urban Hindi college flicks. Choose the cultural hybrid: Superbad (2007) meets Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na (2008), Project X (2012) meets Dil Chahta Hai (2001), or License to Drive (1988) meets Main Hoon Na (2004)? I was also reminded of the recent You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah , an old-school dramedy that reclaims teen friendship from the narrative pressures of romance.
Brothers in Arms
In Friday Night Plan , sibling revelry shapes the highs and lows of a SoBo party. Eighteen-year-old senior Sid Menon ( Babil Khan ) and younger brother Adi (Amrith Jayan) paint the town green when their mother ( Juhi Chawla ) goes away on a business trip. After scoring the winning goal in a football match, Sid gets invited by the Cool Kids to the mythical FNP (Friday Night Plan) – a wild all-nighter that, as Adi explains, is the opposite of Mohabattein ’s ‘parampara-pratishtha-anushasan’ rule.
Sid is reluctant; he didn’t ask for this quarterback-style fame. Suddenly, he’s a legend. All it took was one (accidental) goal in a game he wasn’t even supposed to play. If he were in Harvard, he would have invented a networking app to teach everyone a lesson. But he’s no lunatic, at least not yet. The shallowness of social currency is not a deal breaker. Naturally, the two brothers have a memorable time – replete with pregaming, emotional awakenings, quasi- Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy music, beer pong and towed cars.
The tropes are familiar. Sid is a joyless nerd who only cares for college applications; he hopes to ask universal crush Natasha out for prom night. Adi craves social validation. They’re not from the same class bracket as the others at the international school. They take their mother’s car out despite her warnings. The popular kid, Kabir, is a typical rich brat who has bullied the likes of Sid for years. The party is at a posh penthouse, the kind where fatal mistakes tend to happen. There’s also a bitter sub-inspector who wants to teach these ‘spoiled youngsters’ a lesson. It’s almost like the film is inviting us to expect something edgier. But I like that Friday Night Plan stays sober – it presents a utopian version of the teen angst we’re conditioned to see. None of it is bonkers, which is sort of disarming.
Family-friendly Fun
In a way, this is a children’s movie disguised as a young-adult tale. It doesn’t judge characters that are routinely written as empty stereotypes. The cop is not as evil as we imagine; it’s just a slow night for him. He merely puts the shenanigans in perspective. It also stops short of subscribing to the eat-the-rich template. Kabir and gang, for instance, simply turn out to be kids looking to get wasted. The friction with Sid and Adi never arrives. The rivalry and tension refuse to explode.
It’s easy to look down on their entitled idea of fun – just as Sid initially does – but they’re more of a passing experience in the protagonists’ journeys. It’s not that they’re reframed as sensitive or kind teenagers (they still behave like potential victims in a slasher movie), but they’re also not dismissed as flimsy cautionary tales. What works is that the party exists in service of the brothers’ relationship. Adi wants Sid to be less uptight; Sid wants Adi to be more responsible. They may never be friends with the harmless one-percenters, but the film doesn’t shy away from expressing that they’ve always fantasized about a night like this.
Amrith Jayan is a scene-stealer as Adi; he plays the baby brother as less of an attention-seeking nuisance and more of a sane bystander. You can tell that he views people through the lens of pop culture – the way he speaks, jokes, thinks, groans – and that he also misses the youngness of his brother. A spitting image of his late father, Babil Khan owns the mopey gait of Sid, like an arthouse hero awkwardly occupying a mainstream environment. That’s the arc, too. You can tell that the script is calibrated to reflect his own life experience – he brings a sense of lived-in gravity to a fictional character who grew up too fast after his father’s death. An introvert’s struggle to loosen up – and to let adolescence infect him – is the beating heart of this sugary drama. The intensity of premature adulthood threatens to consume Sid. It’s only fitting that a night with the kids of Zoya Akhtar movie characters reminds him of his age.
The flipside of the film’s virginal debauchery (no smoking, no swear words, no selfies) is that it sacrifices cultural punch at the altar of family-friendly fun. It refuses to cross a moral line. The staging is visible. The policeman, for example, feels like a PG-13 reminder that it’s fine to have fun, but not too much fun. The songs feel like symptoms of a story that wants to be taken seriously, but not too seriously. The ‘pranks’ involve sprinklers and hurling eggs at rival students. A car chase unfolds on – horror of horrors – deserted Mumbai streets. Multiple resolutions happen over the course of a night that offers too much clarity. This curated vibe is a bit of a trade-off, especially because the film never escalates the way it’s set up to. As a result, Friday Night Plan is no Saturday night fever or Sunday boozy brunch – yes, the wordplay sounded smarter in my head. But it does diffuse the excesses of a showy genre. It does make youth look hopeful again. I wouldn’t have thought the same a decade ago, but maybe a frothy vanilla shake on a breezy afternoon is what they call a “guilty pleasure”. Or maybe it’s the perfect hangover cure after a night of binge-watching decadence.

Friday Night Plan Review – a touching teen comedy about the relationship between siblings
There are some genuinely hilarious moments and several emotional scenes. It’s rare for teen comedies to get this balance right without seeming disingenuous.
Here is our review of the 2023 Netflix Hindi movie Friday Night Plan, which does not contain significant spoilers.
The Hindi-language Friday Night Plan is a teen comedy reminiscent of cult classics like Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Superbad . The film was written and directed by Vatsal Neelakantan , and it features performances from established Bollywood stars such as Juhi Chawla and Ninad Kamat alongside relative newcomers Babil Khan , Amrith Jayan , Aadhya Anand , and Ria Chaudhary .
Friday Night Plan Review and Plot Summary
The movie starts by introducing the two leads, brothers Sid and Adi. Since their father’s passing, the two siblings have been raised by their mother. Despite being close in age, they struggle to get along.
At 18, Sid is the oldest and most responsible brother, while Adi is mostly focused on enjoying his teenage years and sleeping in. On the Friday in question, their mother has to go on an overnight work trip and leaves the two boys to their own devices.
After scoring the winning goal for his team in the school football finals, Sid (who was previously mostly ignored by his classmates) gets invited to the so-called Friday Night Plan, or FNP for short. At first, the studious boy is not interested in the party but allows himself to be convinced by his younger brother.
It helps that Sid’s crush, Nat, is hosting the party, and the boy wants to ask her to prom. While Adi wants to attend the hottest party of the year, and his older brother is his ticket in.
While their mom left clear instructions not to touch the car in the driveway, Sid takes it anyway. This, of course, leads to more troubles involving eggs, an angry cop, and a tow truck.
Friday Night Plan is a well-made coming-of-age comedy that doesn’t fall into the over-the-top trap many teen movies do. While formulaic, the movie does a great job of presenting these characters as individuals, not one-dimensional stereotypes.
We even get scenes where teenage boys play pranks on each other, but the jokes are funny and harmless, which is a breath of fresh air for this type of film.
The relationship between the two brothers stands out. It’s clear they care about each other, so when they bicker, it never turns into nastiness, making the result a relatable viewing experience.
Is Friday Night Plan good or bad?
Friday Night Plan is a touching teen comedy exploring the complicated relationship between siblings. There are some genuinely hilarious moments and several emotional scenes.
It’s rare for teen comedies to get this balance right without seeming disingenuous.
Is Friday Night Plan worth watching?
If you’re looking for a lighthearted comedy about teen shenanigans, this is the film for you. It’s funny, thoughtful, and very entertaining.

‘Friday Night Plan’ review: The sibling bond is the life of this party
Vatsal neelakantan’s film is out on netflix..
You know things will only go wrong when a single parent leaves her two teenaged sons home alone with access to her car keys. Vatsal Neelakantan’s Friday Night Plan , which he has co-written with Sapan Verma, follows the beats of a typical American high school comedy (in the vein of Project X ). The film is out on Netflix.
Sid (Babil Khan) is in a sort of time loop of wake up, play football, dance in the shower, repeat. He’s the man about the house and impatient with his irresponsible younger sibling Adi (Amrith Jayan). But at school, Sid’s the nerd.
It’s a normal day until their mother (Juhi Chawla) declares that she has to go on an overnight business trip, leaving the responsible Sid in charge of both the house and his precocious brother. Sid and Adi are constantly at odds. Sid is exasperated with Adi’s carelessness and overall presence just as Adi is frustrated with Sid’s reticence, lack of confidence and inflexibility.
But a surprising event offers the brothers a chance to make this an unforgettable Friday. Sid is hesitant, but Adi’s enthusiasm persuades Sid that he should capitalise on his first invitation to the school’s legendary party called ‘Friday Night Plan’. Sid is motivated by the opportunity to meet classmate Natasha (Medha Rana).
Being a part of the cool gang comes with its conditions. Plus there is the overarching need for Sid and Adi to ensure that their mother remains clueless about their shenanigans. All seems to be going well until... Revealing anything about a plot point involving a car would also be a spoiler.
The scenes capturing the interpersonal family drama are the most emotional and relatable, whether involving Sid and Jai or Natasha and her younger sister Nitya (Aadhya Anand). On the other hand, the high school situations feel less rooted and derivative. The Friday night party includes drinking games such as beer pong and juvenile competitiveness so often seen in American comedies.
On the surface, Friday Night Plan is the story of one day and a night in the lives of these teenagers, with the high school tropes of bullies, jocks, graduation, first love, rivalry and secrecy. Beyond the scaffolding, this is a coming of age story of brothers who learn to embrace their differences and forge a bond.
Whether bantering, bickering, bonding, singing or slinging eggs, Khan and Jayan are amiable and well suited to their parts. The chemistry between the two young lead actors carries the 108-minute Hindi film that is unambiguously aimed at teenagers and young adult viewers.

‘Friday Night Plan’ Review: A Refreshing, Slice-Of-Life Sibling Tale
'friday night plan' is streaming on netflix..
Friday Night Plan is the kind of high-school drama that seems like it could go very wrong or perhaps that’s the skepticism that recent shows of the same kind have instilled in me. This is, of course, not an indictment of shows that aim to explore grittier themes but there is something uniquely enjoyable about a soft, coming-of-age story where the biggest problem is that a cop got hit by an errant egg.

In this film, nothing is as serious as it could be. Siblings squabble and argue but they’re not out to actively get each other. Even the jocks are brash and indifferent but they aren’t absolutely reprehensible people.
Sid Menon (Babil Khan) is shoved into the limelight by a goal he makes by mistake in a high-stakes (for them) football match in his final year. This is the perfect setting for his younger brother Aditya Menon or Adi (Amrith Jayan) to fulfill his biggest goal – to be one of the ‘cool’ kids.
He stares at the football team (and the school’s resident head jock) with an almost fan-like reverence and yet, as the film unravels, we see a kid who has always idolised his older brother the most. Unlike the jock, he looks at his brother with a tinge of nostalgia, for a childhood he imagined with his brother that he can’t act out.
Adi wishes Sid was less ‘responsible’ and uptight and the latter wishes the former wasn’t so cavalier. Their father’s passing has meant that Sid has had to grow up earlier than he needed to – perhaps because he had a front-row seat to the way his mother put their lives back together.
The way their relationship with their mother has impacted their lives is heartwarming to watch – it’s not fear that guides their decisions, it’s respect and genuine affection.
All of this comes to a head when the brothers decide to attend a ‘Friday Night Plan’ when their mother is out for a business trip. As the old adage goes, ‘When the cat’s way, the mice will play’. And play they do. To impress his (and everyone’s) crush Natasha (Medha Rana), he sneaks out his mother’s car and shenanigans ensue.

Friday Night Plan has an interesting insight into how teenagers from such an affluent setting would behave. While there are way too many ‘bro’s thrown around, these teenagers almost speak the way actual teenagers do instead of how most Indian content portrays them. Sure, 2023 Gen-Z slang hasn’t caught up to them but the dialogues are still giving teen ( ;) ).
This is a Y/A tale, complete with characters that are one-tone caricatures but this isn’t a bad thing here. The only issue is that you’re hyper-aware of the fact that you’re watching a story unfold on a screen. There is little to be invested in and little payout. This is coming-of-age at its most sanitised. It’s more You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah than it is Do Revenge. It is not a Lady Bird. It’s just a Friday Night Plan.
Babil Khan carries himself with an almost morose, old poet aura around him which is punctuated with the innocent gait and smile of a young child standing at the precipice of adulthood. This back-and-forth seems seamless in Babil’s able hands and it endears you to Sid.
Adi is no less endearing. He speaks and lives pop culture (at one point comparing his brother to Vin Diesel) and his eagerness to impress his older brother above all is delightfully affecting. Jayan imbibes a callous charm to this character which really helps you buy into the Adi-Sid sibling context.
Juhi Chawla as the boys’ mother brings an infectious kindness to the screen. She is raising her sons in an environment that doesn’t force them to ignore their wants – she only provides a guiding hand and a sensible voice. Her gentle parenting is reflected in how sensitive and well-rounded her sons are growing up to be.
In a still from Friday Night Plan.
The way the background score (courtesy Rahul Pais and Nariman Khambata) shifts from mindless revelry when the story is focusing on the kids to something edgier when the cops get involved is a nice touch. It doesn’t lead anywhere so it becomes a little overdone towards the end but as a whole, the score gets the job done.
The camerawork by Krish Makhija is reminiscent of shows like Dil Dosti Dance and Sadda Haq that I would secretly watch with my cousins on a sweltering Friday evening because we were asked not to. The 2000s nostalgia and the ache to be back in college hit me almost instantly.
Friday Night Plan is pretty much a one-time-watch but it’s a film that leaves you with a smile on your face.

After making a great debut with ‘Kala’, Babil is once again seen on the OTT platform. Following the footsteps of his father, the late actor Irrfan Khan, Babil has well known how to make fans crazy with his acting. Today on September 1, his film ‘Friday Night Plan’ has been streamed on Netflix. Let us know how this film is!
Story: The story of Friday Night Plan is mainly about two brothers. Elder brother Sid (Babil) is good at studies and is called a bookworm by all. Whereas his younger brother Adi (Amrit Jayan) is very mischievous. Both brothers love each other very much but they always keep fighting with each other at home. Apart from studies, Sid is also very interested in sports. One day, he becomes a hero in everyone’s eyes by scoring a brilliant goal in school football. Only that is being discussed everywhere. Meanwhile, the school students plan the most fun party of the year.
Meanwhile, Sid and Adi’s mother (Juhi Chawla) has to go out for some important work. She consoles both of them and leaves them alone at home. But still, both the brothers plan to attend the party after their mother leaves. Now after the departure of the mother, will both the brothers be able to attend the party? What happens to them on Friday Night? You will have to watch the film to see this.
Performance: Babil Khan is very good in the character of a school child. He has played the role of a good school student as well as sports and mother’s darling. On the other hand, if we talk about Juhi Chawla, she has been such an actress who always surprises the audience with her performance. Every time something new is seen in his screen presence. Amrit Jayan has also done a great job according to his character. His bubbly and mischievous demeanor as the younger brother will endear him to the audience.
Technicalities: This is Vatsal Neelakantan’s debut film, and he has tried his best to make the best out of his school experience. Neelakantan’s direction infuses a dynamic energy in the film which keeps the audience engaged from beginning to end.
Analysis: Friday Night Plan is a movie that reminds us that we need stories that are easy and make us feel comfortable amidst stories that “wonder” and move us. The music of the film is possibly slow which will take some time to develop, but it is definitely interesting and not something that one can ignore.
Verdict: Even though the film is relevant and entertaining, it is only good for one viewing. While the film attempts to convey light-heartedness in a good way, the balance between the two seems up and down at times. The transitions between comic scenes and deep reflections could have been smoother, adding to the emotional resonance of the film. Overall, the film is okay but it could have been made better.

What's the Story?
Sid (Babil Khan) is a model student and a good son who becomes a sudden sensation when he helps his school win a soccer match, leading the popular kids to invite him to their FRIDAY NIGHT PLAN, an exclusive party where teenagers escape the stress of the week. Urged by his youngest brother Adi (Amrith Jayan) to take their mother's car and bring him to the party, the teenagers encounter several misadventures and learn about the importance of staying true to themselves and following rules.
Is It Any Good?
This Indian, Hindi-language film follows the tradition of high school comedies like Mean Girls and Ferris Bueller's Day Off without adding anything new to the genre. In Friday Night Plan, brothers Sid and Adi become involved in a night of misadventures as they try to climb up the popularity ladder in their high school. Although the film starts with a kick, quite literally as a winning goal turns the nerdy Sid into a school celebrity, it soon loses its freshness and falls into predictable tropes.
As Sid, Khan makes for a lovable hero and, through body language and silence, infuses his character with depth often lacking in the screenplay. Juhi Chawla as the boys' mother only has a few scenes but she almost warrants a movie of her own, as she fills every moment with thoughtfulness and clear love for her children. At almost two hours long, the film could have done with some trimming, especially scenes involving overlong pranks that aren't as funny or interesting as they think. The film is pleasant enough to make for a good, if not particularly memorable, Friday night plan.

Friday Night Plan movie review: Too clean for a teen film
Rating: ( 2.5 / 5).
It’s a bit difficult to relate with Excel Entertainment’s version of coming-of-age cinema. Let’s face it, for most of us our bachelor party won’t be in Spain ( Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara ) and nobody leaves for Goa on a whim ( Dil Chahta Hai ), even if you live in Mumbai. This is not to say that there is no connection with the characters or their journeys. It’s just that these stories are more aspirational than relatable. The ordeal the characters find themselves in runs the risk of being labelled as first-world problems. While watching their latest outing, Friday Night Plan , helmed by debutant director Vatsal Neelakantan, I kept on hoping for it to strike a chord with me. For it to take me back to my own teenage years, the pressures of board exams, the haywire hormones, the incessant need to be accepted among some coveted groups and in colleges. Sadly, what I got was a Disneyfied teen dramedy, shown in a rather American lens. Do kids these days really play beer pong at parties?
Cast: Babil Khan, Juhi Chawla, Ninad Kamat, Amrith Jayan
Director: Vatsal Neelakantan
Streamer: Netflix
After scoring a winning goal by fluke at a football match, the rather nerdy and nobody Siddharth Menon aka Sid (a nervous but adorable Babil Khan) becomes the new popular guy at school. He gets an invite for the “Friday Night Plan” (FNP as the kids call it these days), which is basically an after-school party on a Friday. Sid has an overly enthusiastic younger brother Aditya aka Adi (an entertaining Amrith Jayan) who is desperate to attend. Their single mother (a bit too angelic Juhi Chawla) is out of town, the party is at Sid’s crush’s house, and they also have the car to themselves. What would the brothers do?
What is endearing about Friday Night Plan is that it is honest and innocent. It might be true in depicting the world of sanitized IB schools, where no student has pimples or braces, but it falters when it comes to exploring the uncertainty of youth. For Babil’s Sid, the only dilemma is to choose a college and that too his options range from the US to Africa. There is some thoughtful writing, depicting the relationship between him and his brother and their contrasting personalities. After losing their father, while Sid became the responsible elder brother, Adi is trying to find solace in being carefree. “You used to be fun… but after Dad you became so cynical,” he tells Sid during an altercation.
The fun bits feel a bit too safe. For two high school kids who have gotten the car out for the first time, the worst that happens is that it gets towed because they accidentally threw an egg at a cop. The policeman, played by Ninad Kamat, is as terrifying as a Looney Toons villain. I kept on wondering what worse could have happened? Would they have gotten into an accident? Probably Adi could have gotten too drunk and had to be dragged back home before their mother reaches? Could they have broken an expensive vase at the host’s house and then had to cover it up? Maybe they were caught by the cop and had to escape from the jail? The what-ifs could be endless but the what-is is rather plain, sometimes too sweet and always mellow.

‘Friday Night Plan’ movie review: A sweet but forgettable sibling dramedy
Babil khan and amrith jayan play brothers in a film that papers over difficult emotions to retain its feel-good tag.

Is Farhan Akhtar growing nostalgic for Dil Chahta Hai , the definitive Mumbai coming-of-ager he directed in 2001? Some of his recent production choices certainly betray that yearning. Last year, I was sufficiently charmed by his quirky Netflix offering Eternally Confused and Eager for Love , about a virgin twentysomething and his trash-talking toy. The series didn’t fly; I’m guessing the zany but off-colour humour turned some of its target demographic away. As if to tone it down, Akhtar has now produced the Netflix film Friday Night Plan , which is so coy and inoffensive it could easily have aired on Disney Channel.
Brothers Sid ( Babil Khan ), 18, and Adi (Amrith Jayan), 16, attend the same private school in Mumbai. Sid is nerdy, unpopular, awkward – other than the fact that he’s stalling his college applications, he has nothing in common with Miles Teller in The Spectacular Now . Adi, on the other hand, is a typical movie character – the twerpy younger sibling who drives you mad with unsolicited tips and pep talks. “You should totally ask her out,” he advises his brother, wisely, over a girl in his class. The opportunity for the same presents itself when Sid unexpectedly scores a goal in a crucial derby and gets invited to a ‘Friday Night’ bash after school. Adi, all too eager to hang with his cooler ‘seniors’, tags along.
Friday Night Plan (Hindi, English)
With their mum (Juhi Chawla), a single parent, out on a business trip, Sid and Adi decide to take the car (never a good omen in frisky teen comedies). One prank leads to another, and soon Adi ends up ‘egging’ a khaki-clad officer on duty. It’s a moment, one of many, that made me wonder if Friday Night Plan has enough ignition for its 108-minute runtime. “That was freaking epic, man,” says a kid, evidently having the night of his life. Director Vatsal Neelakantan and co-writer Sapan Verma are probably being true to the experience of sheltered high schoolers, where the slightest antic or misadventure can take on the proportion of a crime. When the rich degenerates in Shaitan (2011) took off in a Hummer, the threat was a potential jail term. Here, all Sid and Adi have to do is apologize and retrieve their mom’s car.
This safe, sanitized feeling never quite leaves the film. The bullying Sid experiences in school is limited to verbal slights and barbs. The school itself is one of those elite joints, with Macs and gym showers and personalised career counselling for all. At the party, the kids play beer pong and flip the cup - instead of Uno or dumb charades. Adi being underage isn’t allowed to drink (Neelkantan is wary about losing that 13+ rating). The emotions, too, are papered over lest they upset the film’s ‘feel-good’ tag. When Sid and Adi finally come to blows and there’s a mention of their deceased father, I expected a carnage. Instead, it’s all resolved swimmingly with a pillow fight.
Babil Khan made a haunting debut in last year’s Qala , a highly stylized and esoteric film. As striking as that performance was, it’s sometimes hard to judge actors in a setting or world far removed from their own (Ranbir Kapoor was arresting in Saawariya but truly hit his stride with Wake Up Sid ). Friday Night Plan , in this regard, is a better test for Babil’s talents. Juhi Chawla plays a widowed single parent with a nice mix of affection and exasperation. I would like to see more of Amrith Jayan too - if he isn’t typecast in sidekick roles. Protagonists named Sid tend to flourish in Hindi films. The Adis not so much.

Friday Night Plan: Is Netflix’s Teenage Drama Inspired by a True Story?
Directed by Vatsal Neelakantan, Netflix’s ‘Friday Night Plan’ is an Indian coming-of-age comedy movie that revolves around Sid and Adi, two teenage brothers navigating high school life. After the former wins a crucial football match for his school, he suddenly becomes popular and is invited to a Friday night house party thrown by his classmates. Eager to hang out with the cool seniors, Adi decides to tag along with Sid, but what starts as a fun night soon takes a messy turn when things go out of control.
Featuring stellar performances from actors like Babil Khan, Amrith Jayan, Ninad Kamat, and Juhi Chawla, the movie delves into the adventurous age of adolescence, capturing both the joys and confusion it brings along. Through the adventures of Sid and Adi, it authentically explores themes such as peer pressure, the bonds between siblings, and the true meaning of growing up. Naturally, the realistic characters and the relatable situation they find themselves in remind the audience of their own teenage days . Moreover, it begs the question — is ‘Friday Night Plan’ rooted in reality?
Friday Night Plan Takes Inspiration from Real-Life Elements
No, ‘Friday Night Plan’ is not based on a true story. Adapted from an original script penned by Vatsal Neelakantan and Sapan Verma, it is reportedly their tribute to cult coming-of-age movies like ‘ Ferris Bueller’s Day Off ,’ ‘ Project X ‘ and ‘ Superbad .’ Although the film is fictional, the writers likely drew inspiration from their own teenage years and their observations of modern-day Indian high schoolers. In fact, Neelakantan shared in an interview with Filmfare that it is a very personal project for him, as it reflects his early years.
The filmmaker revealed, “The story is very much based on the experiences I’ve had and the kind of people I’ve met. My family, friends, and my school life were the issues I faced growing up. There’s a lot of honesty that the script was built on. That’s the first thing I spoke to the cast about. I wrote a lot of backstories and bios, so I shared all that with them and heard their thoughts on it. It was important for me to take their feedback if there was anything old or outdated. I hope that has given a sense of authenticity to the film.”
Furthermore, Neelakantan stated that though the movie is not a replica of his life, the equation between the protagonists, Sid and Adi, is quite reminiscent of his own relationship with his brother. “My father passed away when I was very young. I have a brother, and our mother brought us up. So while it isn’t autobiographical, the emotional truth is there, and the whole arc of the brothers having to deal with the responsibility and the love they have for their mother comes from the dynamics between us.”
Not just that, Babil Khan, who essays Sid in the movie, stated in another interview with Vogue India that portraying his character was easy for him. He commented, “Having a younger brother in real life, this film feels so relatable to me. It’s a heartwarming journey that brings back fond memories of our own misadventures.” Coming to the movies it draws inspiration from, ‘Friday Night Plan’ bears a lot of resemblance to Nima Nourizadeh’s 2012 movie ‘Project X,’ which also involves high-school seniors whose plan to throw the most epic party for their classmates gets wilder as the night progresses.
In addition, the trope of teenagers getting in trouble with an authority figure outside school has been explored masterfully in many movies, such as the 1986 movie ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.’ Just like Sid and Adi cross paths with a cop, in the John Hughes directorial, a high schooler fakes sickness to spend time with his best friend, but falls into a mess when his dean decides to spy on him. To sum up, ‘Friday Night Plan’ is a work of fiction, but it draws from the real-life experiences of today’s teenagers and the director’s own life to create an authentic coming-of-age tale.
