Sex, Romance & Nudity

Lots of graphic, detailed, explicit descriptions of adult college students having sex with the intention of causing arousal, from both male and female perspectives of an opposite-sex relationship. Oral sex, manual stimulation, vaginal sex, masturbation, genital and manual penetration, stimulation with a shower head; many different positions specifically described and sex done in places like the back of an SUV full of passengers. Details about body parts, placement, and bodily functions are described with crude words like "clit," "t--ts," "p---y," "c---k," "d--k," "pr--k," "cum," and "precum." Detailed descriptions of the physical sensations of orgasm. Lots of sexual innuendo and banter. Mention of a past unwanted pregnancy. Good examples of consent and using condoms and birth-control pills.

Drinking, Drugs & Smoking

College students of legal age drink to excess a lot, in glamorous situations like a Vegas casino-themed birthday party, house parties, or a popular Hollywood nightclub. Characters often don't remember what happened or how they got to where they woke up. Consequences include hangovers, vomiting, and dealing with poor decisions. Playing beer pong is mentioned several times but not described, and adult situations come up in a game of Never Have I Ever. A character invents a way to incorporate drinking into playing Twister.

Violence & Scariness

A fight with punching, shoving, knocking things over, and choking isn't detailed. Cuts on faces mention blood but aren't described. A punch in the face. An unwanted kiss. Punches to friends' arms while teasing. A character is in danger of drowning after falling through thin ice.

Did you know you can flag iffy content? Adjust limits for Violence & Scariness in your kid's entertainment guide.

Products & Purchases

Luxury consumer products to establish rich characters. A few food, beverage, and alcohol brands. A playlist in the front features a variety of pop and rap artists.

Positive Messages

Winning is worthless if you hate yourself for what you have to do to win. Recovery isn't linear; trust the process and forgive yourself when you make a mistake. Real love makes each partner better, and makes anything possible.

Diverse Representations

Both main characters are White. Nate's family is extremely wealthy. Anastasia's is middle class, and she's always known she was adopted. Nate's friend group includes his best friend and coach who uses a wheelchair; a teammate who's pansexual, has a name that reads as South Asian, and has a knack for making curry; and another teammate with brown skin, auburn curls, and two moms who's an art major. There are a few stereotypes and cliches, but overall the characters seem very individual, and it's refreshing to see such an accepting group of friends from the world of elite college athletes.

Positive Role Models

Neither Anastasia nor Nate are very likeable. Anastasia (Stas or Stassie) is a stereotype of a stubborn spitfire. Nate is a little against type as a caring jock, but he often goes too far out of jealousy or being too protective. As we get to know them they become easier to understand and sympathize with. They're surrounded by loyal, supportive friends, harsh coaches, and one villain.

Oral sex, manual stimulation, vaginal sex, masturbation, stimulation with a shower head, and many different positions are specifically described. Lots of sexual innuendo and banter. Anastasia's eating habits are disordered and her skating partner is emotionally abusive and manipulative. Anastasia has a history of anxiety and control issues and sees a therapist. Violence and scariness is mild, including a fight with punches that mentions bleeding cuts and swollen faces, an unwanted kiss leads to a lot of emotional upset, and a character who nearly dies after falling through ice into a pond. I CANNOT BELIEVE!

O.M.G This book was horrible! my 9 year old daughter read this because her friend gave it to her! I started reading it myself and boy oh boy I will be contacting this friends mother! the amount of sexual intercourse is horrible and they didn’t even wait before marriage! CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS! AND SHE GOT PREGNANT AT ONLY 12?!? my daughter will be punished for reading!

Innapropriate for pre-teens

What's the story.

ICEBREAKER is the story of University of California college students Anastasia (Stas) and Nate. Stas is on track to make the Olympic team in pairs figure skating, and Nate is the captain of the hockey team with a slot in the NHL waiting for him when he graduates. When a malicious act of vandalism damages the hockey team's ice, Stas and Nate are thrown together -- the hockey team has to share a rink with the figure skaters. Stas has no room in her life for distractions, but as she gets to know Nate she can't deny her feelings of attraction to him. As circumstances bring them together on and off the ice, their feelings for each other deepen, and they each begin to wonder, is this love?

Is It Any Good?

This is a fairly predictable, lightweight college sports-themed romance that fans of the genre are likely to enjoy, but there's little else to offer other readers, except the sex, of course. ICEBREAKER isn't marketed to teens, but there's a lot of teen appeal in the many steamy, explicit sex scenes. Teens who are looking for a fun, breezy romance may actually find that all the sex starts to get in the way of the romance as it becomes more and more gratuitous. College life is pretty glamorized too. Aside from all the sex here, teens can look forward to independence, fun friends, lots of parties, and lots of drinking. And to everything turning out all right in the end.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about the graphic sex in Icebreaker. Is it over the top? Realistic? Is reading about it different from seeing it in movies, videos, and other media?

What are some concerns about reading or watching explicit sex ? Do you compare yourself or your body to the characters? Does it make you afraid, creepy, or unsure about what sex is like for real people?

What about all the strong language? Is it realistic? Is it a big deal? Why, or why not?

For part of this story, Anastasia struggles being comfortable with her body and eating normally. Is this a struggle for anyone you know? Why is this an issue for some people? What can be done?

Review: Icebreaker by Hannah Grace

icebreaker book review

Article contributed by Alexandra Vargova

Figure skater Anastasia Allen has worked hard her whole life to reach her athletic dream of going to the Olympics. With her precise plan, strict schedule, and a no-nonsense attitude, she’s fully focused on accomplishing her goal—there’s no time for a distraction.

Nate Hawkins, a six-foot-something, gorgeous captain of the university’s hockey team, is exactly the type of complication Anastasia doesn’t need. However, due to a prank gone wrong, Anastasia and Nate are forced to share a rink together, and after her partner gets injured, Nate steps up to be the replacement. With their goals within their grasp and their future on the line, falling in love is a tremendously bad idea. But the more time Anastasia and Nate spend together, and with each new wall broken down, keeping their hands—and feelings— to themselves seems impossible.

Lovers of sports romances and enemies-to-lovers, as well as fans of Elle Kennedy’s Off-Campus series should keep an eye on Icebreaker . It also features the sunshine x grumpy dynamic, however in a slightly different way than we are usually used to seeing it—here, it’s Anastasia who has the hardened exterior and strict, almost terrifying personality; and Nate is this kind and cheerful goofball. The story reminded me of Cutting Edge so fans of this film will definitely enjoy this read with this classic being given a modern and a much spicier tone. I’m not a big hockey or figure skating nerd, but the book explains all the necessary details about both of the sports cleverly without it being overly complicated or too info-dumpish. The sports are woven into the background as kind of a stage on which Stassie and Nate’s relationship takes a place. While they are relevant for the duration of the novel, this is romance first and foremost and you can rest easy because Hannah Grace properly delivers on this front.

To be honest, after the first couple of chapters, I was worried that Anastasia won’t work for me as a heroine. The way she was cold-shouldering Nate made me think that she will be the kind of female lead who keeps her emotions bottled and never lets the hero close enough. Unnecessary drama and miscommunication is a pet peeve for me when it comes to romance novels and that’s why I have a love-hate relationship with this genre. However, their mutual dynamic and especially the hilarious banter and delicious sexual tension urged me to keep reading and I’m honestly so glad that I didn’t let my first impression fool me.

Both of the protagonists grew on me with every next chapter and it felt like I was getting to know them, layer by layer, as Nate and Stassie were getting to know each other. Their chemistry is off the charts and once the tension between them finally explodes, you can be sure that you won’t want to be caught reading it in public. While the novel can’t be really labelled ‘erotica’, the sex scenes are incredibly hot and graphic; undoubtedly one of the best spice I’ve ever seen in a New Adult book.

Nate is such a sweetheart, caring and tender, he was giving this ‘overprotective older brother’ vibe, but behind closed doors, he easily put machos like Christian Grey or Gideon Cross to shame. He blended the qualities of a good boy and a rogue together so well that I guarantee that every single girl’s expectations will grow exponentially after reading this. Grace truly created an amazing boyfriend MMC in Icebreaker .

As much as both Anastasia and Nate are truly well-written and are an enjoyable duo to read about, it’s definitely the secondary characters that steal the show. Personally, I love a wide arrange of characters, and there’s something so inexplicably appealing when it comes to big groups/crews in stories. Nate’s whole hockey team was an entertaining bunch, their bromance and loyalty was spectacular and felt realistic. Besides, with so many collage guys thrown together, you can be sure there will be some chaos and hilarious shenanigans. The guys were Nate’s greatest support, yet also the greatest menace, giving him a hard time. Not only does this book succeed in making you blush, it will also cause some stomach ache from laughing so hard. It has been announced that there will be more books in this universe, so there’s a high chance that these guys will get their own stories. There’s still hope for more if you end up falling for these fools like I did.

All jokes aside, while Icebreaker is in no sense a heavy novel, it still deals with serious topics such as body image and eating disorder, depression and anxiety and toxic relationships. They fit into the story well, without affecting the pacing, quite the contrary; they flow along with the plot and serve as a welcome juxtaposition to all the humour and romance. It shows real life, where everything is often far from ideal. It made the novel that much more relatable. There’s also a fair disability and different culture representation. Even though they were all side characters, it’s always great to see the underrepresented groups of society be featured in fiction.

What I would fault the book for, however, is that it didn’t have to be dragged for so many chapters. Although there’s still a solid plot and problems that need to be resolved, the pacing could have been a bit better. Nate and Stassie’s disagreements seemed to echo one another and were starting to get a bit repetitive. On the other hand, I applaud the author for writing them as mature and rational adults that dealt with all their issues directly, and communicated properly which seems so rare in romance genre. In this regard, I’d say Icebreaker is quite unique.

Overall, this romance was a pleasant surprise in many ways and I’d never guess that this was Hannah Grace’s debut novel. The plot, the writing and the characters as well are done excellently and the book reads swiftly and easily, and even people who don’t usually enjoy romances like I do, won’t be disappointed. If you are looking for a satisfying read with wholesome characters, great banter and 50 degree heat, Icebreaker should definitely have a place in your to-read list!

Review: Icebreaker by Hannah Grace

Lately, I’ve seen Icebreaker by Hannah Grace around a lot. I was somewhat intrigued by this title, but still I didn’t want to pick it up. I had serious doubts whether it would be something for me or not. I’ve read many new adult romances in the past and let’s face it, sports romances are the most present within this age category. Not that I mind that, but I’ve read a lot in the past and maybe I’m satisfied by the amount I’ve read. However, this particular book got translated into Dutch and my ongoing curiosity needed to be fed. So, I caved, bought the book and read it. Was it exactly what I was hoping to get?

About the book

Book cover for Icebreaker by Hannah Grace

  • Series: Maple Hills #1
  • Publish date: August 21, 2022
  • Publisher: Pig & Bear Publishing
  • ISBN: 9781915593009

  • Genre: New Adult, Contemporary, Romance
Anastasia Allen has worked her entire life for a shot at Team USA. A competitive figure skater since she was five years old, a full college scholarship thanks to her place on the Maple Hills skating team, and a schedule that would make even the most driven person weep, Stassie comes to win. No exceptions. Nathan Hawkins has never had a problem he couldn’t solve. As captain of the Maple Hills Titans, he knows the responsibility of keeping the hockey team on the ice rests on his shoulders. When a misunderstanding results in the two teams sharing a rink, and Anastasia’s partner gets hurt in the aftermath, Nate finds himself swapping his stick for tights, and one scary coach for an even scarier one. The pair find themselves stuck together in more ways than one, but it’s fine, because Anastasia doesn’t even like hockey players…right?

This story is about figure skater Anastasia (Stasi) and icehockey player Nathan. Stasi is determined to become the best figure skater in the world and she really wants that place in Team USA at the Olympics. This means that she’s really competetive and does everything to win. Nothing or nobody may interfere, especially no hot guys. A relationship is out of order. Nathan on the other hand is a teamplayer and has the responsibility for the entire hockeyteam resting on his shoulders. When after a misunderstanding one of the rinks is out of use, both Stasi and Nathan have to share the ice. Well, that can’t go right, can it? When something happens Stasi can’t fix by herself, Nate seems the only one able to help. Will they part ways afterwards or does one thing lead to more?

Quite honestly, this book is a little two-faced to me. I’ve had an enjoyable time reading on one hand, but got annoyed on the other. Yes, the writing is accessible and easy to read, but I still found it easy to put the book aside for a while. I have the feeling this is a life phase thing, because I graduated college about 6 years ago. I was 26 at the time and I’ve read a lot of college romances in the past years. However, I’m turning 32 now and I got a bit disturbed by student life. I avoided student life like the plague anyway when in college.

One of the best things – probably the best thing – about this book are the characters and their growth. They both are truly passionate about their respective sports. However, this was more noticeable with Stasi, to the point where it felt really toxic and unhealthy. Figure skating was the only thing that mattered to her and she forgot that there’s more in life. Later on, we learnt what made her think like this. Nathan on the other hand has some struggles of his own, but he seems to hide them. However, their time together really made them grow, especially on individual level. They both learnt to find their balance within their lives, including their sports.

Unfortunately, I struggled a lot with the plot itself. This storyline is nowhere new for a new adult romance. In fact, it’s becoming so repetitive and predictable, I’ve already seen it all in previous books. Therefore, I wasn’t really intrigued. Gladly, Grace put more serious themes in this book, for instance toxic relationships. And yes, you can take this literally and figuratively. If these themes weren’t existent in this book, it was just plain smut. Because oh, the smut guys, the smut. I had a feeling that there’s more of it than in any other books I’ve read within this subgenre. It also started faster and that’s exactly what annoyed me in this book. Why so fast? I mean, they already did it at about a quarter of the book? I think I’m done with that and therefore feel so old LOL. However, the plot with its more serious themes support the characters in their growth and that has been done well.

Overall, Icebreaker by Hannah Grace is not a book I’ve fully enjoyed. The characters and their growth were great to witness and the writing is easy to follow. However, the plot is paperthin and the smut is a bit too fast. I don’t mind sex and smut, but I think I’m at an age now that I prefer growth and slowburn over quick sex. In my opinion, this book was more of the latter and less of the first, allbeit both present. This makes me less excited for the second book in the Maple Hills series than I’d hoped.
