By Gunnar Rehlin
The true story of how Finnish kids during WWII were transported to neutral Sweden to be safe from the conflict, “Mother of Mine” has all the right ingredients to become a big hit across Scandinavia. Finnish helmer Klaus Haro comes up with an emotionally involving tale that could also resonate beyond the region in specialty situations. Pic is Finland’s official submission for the Oscars’ foreign film category.
More than 70,000 Finnish children were uprooted from their homes and sent to Sweden. For many, it was an adventure; for others, especially the very young, it was a tragedy. The latter returned to Finland after the war, not knowing their parents and speaking only Swedish.
Film starts in the present, as Eero (Esko Salminen), a Finn in his 60s, visits his aged mother, Kirsti (Aino-Maija Tikkanen). He tells her he’s just been to Sweden for the funeral of a woman called Signe, and it’s now time to have a proper talk about the war and what happened during and after Eero’s stay in Sweden. The mother grudgingly agrees, and in long flashbacks Eero’s story unspools.
After his father (Kari-Pekka Toivonen) was killed during the war, young Eero (Topi Majaniemi) was sent by his mother (Marjaana Maijala) to Sweden. The boy protests, but is transported along with hundreds of other children, ending up at a farm belonging to married couple Signe (Maria Lundqvist) and Hjalmar (Michael Nyqvist). Signe, who was expecting a girl, is initially hostile towards him, but Hjalmar is more welcoming.
Eero starts going to school, but is ridiculed by the other kids and desperately wants to return to Finland. Overhearing a conversation between Hjalmar and Signe, he realizes they once had a child who died.
Eero occasionally receives letters from his mother, and at Christmas she also calls him from Helsinki. When he hears the Finnish capital has been bombed by the Russians, he tries to sail home on a raft and almost drowns.
Soon after, Eero’s mom writes that she’s met a German officer and wants to go to live with him in Germany. Could Eero stay with Hjalmar and Signe forever? But as the audience knows from the beginning, it’s not meant to be.
Pic has many similar themes to helmer Haro’s first movie, “Elina,” about a fatherless little Finnish girl whose teacher tried to force her to speak Swedish. But where “Elina” was an optimistic story about a feisty girl who fought back, “Mother of Mine” is a tragedy. Eero is a victim, bereft of parental love — most strikingly captured in the B&W modern-day scenes where he confronts his aged mother. Though sentimental, pic never feels manipulative.
As in “Elina,” Haro’s direction is slow and somewhat old-fashioned, with Jarkko T. Laine’s widescreen lensing often contrasting the wide open landscapes of southern Sweden with the murky interiors of the farmhouse, where time seems to stand still. In some sequences, all natural sound is removed, with a melancholy piano tune used instead, to striking effect.
Majaniemi is a find as the young Eero, often letting just his eyes and face do the talking. As Hjalmar, Nyqvist (last seen in “As It Is in Heaven”) is fine, as always. However, both are almost acted off the screen by Lundqvist, in the pivotal role of Signe. Mostly known for TV comedy, thesp proves herself here as a dramatic actress to be reckoned with.

On The Road: Water The Forests Of Finland
Well, this was a very interesting viewing experience. You see, the version I could find in Spanish for some strange reason had the picture running at almost 1.25x and the audio normal on speed. I watched most of the movie like that until I found a version that had the picture running normally but was in Russian, muted that one and watched the video with the Spanish dubbing running on another tab.
And the reason I made such an effort with this movie instead of giving up is due to the fact that this movie is worth it. Although it can sometimes fall into the sentimental, this was a very welcome change…

Mother of Mine ( Ä ideistä parhain ) is a beautiful Finnish film directed by Klaus Härö. It is based on a novel by Heikki Hietamies. Remember that during World War II, more than 70,000 Finnish children were evacuated and separated from their respective families to neutral Sweden to avoid conflict.
A Finnish boy named Eero Lahti loses his biological father, after he dies at the front. Eero's mother, Kirsti, falls into a deep depression. As the war progresses, Eero is sent to Sweden with a new Swedish family.
His new family is made up of a father Hjalmar Jönsson, a mother Signe Jönsson and a grandfather. Despite the fact that Hjalmar and the rest of the family are very welcoming, Eero does…

After WW2 broke out in Finland over 70,000 children were evacuated and sent to live in neighboring Sweden.
Mother of Mine tells the tale on one boy, 9 year-old Eero, who went to live on a farm with Hjalmar and Signe Jönsson.
Over 3000 people have rated this film on IMDb and it averages out at 7.7. I honestly couldn't score it that high if my life depended on it. Has the feel of an averagely made TV film and is a 6.0 at best, on a good day.
One of the major issues I have with this film is my dislike of directors who introduce sad and melancholic piano music. Sad, sad, manipulative piano music littered throughout the film.…

Fascinating historical event which I've never heard about! The best moment in the film is the family photo in front of the background of the waters - subtle and emotionally powerful. Overall, however, the movie fails to make the sensual connection which it's so much striving for. The narrative structure is too Hollywoodian, the psychological reversals of Signe and Eero are completely out of the blue (even though there was potential for them to seem more natural), and the ending is attacking with some banal poetry. I think it was a wrong choice not to include the sociopolitical historical events in the story and especially the relations between Finland and Sweden at the time, which would've given the viewer more historical background and reasons to care. The film takes the safe route - to perpetuate timelessness, but this isn't a timeless story and cannot be eternalised as such.
Review by thenerdyangel ★★★
This movie is made in a very traditional and classic way.
It is sometimes too slow, but it shows well how attachment develops in children and how strong links can be built with other people than the parents.
Also, an occasion to learn about how WWII affected Finland.
And I always like an unlikely bonding story.

Not gonna rate this cuz we watched this in school and people in the room were annoying. They kept talking over the movie. Also since it's 45mins per class i couldn't remember what had happened previously. The last 10 -ish minutes were very pretty tho
Maybe some day i'll be able to give this my full attention

It’s based on the novel by Heikki Hietamies and written by Jimmy Karlsson and Kirsi Vikman. Mother of Mine tells the fictional story of just one of the 70,000 Finnish war children who were evacuated to neutral Sweden while the Finns were engaged in combat with the Russians. Klaus Härö (“Elina”) directs this solid family value drama about one such 9-year-old named Eero (Topi Majaniemi), who was taken in by the middle-aged childless Jönsson farming family (Michael Nyqvist & Maria Lundqvist) of rural Skane. Eero’s soldier father was killed in combat at the front, and his mother (Marjaana Maijala) felt he would be safer in Sweden. The good-natured new foster-father Hjalmar, a former sailor, hits it off with the youngster, but the new foster-mother Signe is cold to him because she recently lost her 6-year-old daughter in a drowning accident and wanted a girl foster child. This causes many silent moments and a few acts of mild rebellion from the conflicted youngster, who reluctantly reasons that it’s better to make a go of it then resist.
This painful patch of World War II Finnish history shows how Eero increasingly feels abandoned by his real Finnish mother and finds it difficult to adjust to his embittered surrogate Swedish mom. The scars from this period are dealt with in the film’s present-day black-and-white sequences, in which the middle-aged Eero (Esko Salminen) goes to Sweden to attend his surrogate mother’s funeral and then visits his elderly Finnish mother (Aino-Maija Tikkanen). He, at last, after suppressing his lifelong feelings about this abandonment, finds out her motives for shipping him out during the war and their relationship is improved when the secrets are revealed.
It’s acted in a subdued manner, as the fine cast all give outstanding performances and make this touching story a strong emotional dramatization. It was the winner of a number of festival awards including the ones in Toronto, Seattle, Palm Springs and Cairo.
