Despite this fact, there comes a point in time when the student needs to supplement the income from their parents or rather source funds to even cater for their education (Sloman, 652).

As a result, most students end up engaging in part-time jobs. It can be due to the necessity or desire to have some extra money to spend. The decision to engage in part-time jobs is entirely the student’s choice. Some get support from their parents, tutors, and friends, while others don’t.

But should students have part-time jobs? This essay tries to answer this question.

Before any decision to engage in part-time jobs is reached, three things have to be critically considered. These are the students themselves, their financial situation, and, finally, the type of work. The listed factors will allow a person to make decisions that they will not live to regret.

Therefore, this part-time job essay is an in-depth analysis of the advantages of students having jobs and a little discussion on the disadvantages.

Part-time jobs are of great essentiality since students are able to earn while at the same time studying. Most part-time jobs require that one works for about three to four hours a day, something that is manageable by almost every student, given the fact that lessons don’t take the entire day. Some of the benefits associated with part-time jobs for students include the following;

Relief of financial burden

Students who engage in part-time jobs get paid for the services offered; hence the earnings obtained can be used to partly relieve the students’ financial burden they could have.

This is because the cost of education has in the recent past sky-rated, making students from poor families not able to afford yet the banking systems have also failed to loan such students; therefore, engaging in part-time jobs makes such students meet their education expenses (Somoski 1). In addition, part-time jobs give students pocket money that they can spend on their own without nagging their parents with money.

Promotion of education

Students who undertake part-time jobs are able to upgrade their studies, making them understand whatever they learn in school even better. For instance, an accounting student who gets a part-time job in an accounting firm will be able to experience the theory learned in school practically hence having a better understanding of the course. The same applies to medicine, engineering, law, and biology students, among others (Pickett 1).

Accumulation of work experience

Engaging in part-time jobs enables the students to gain experience in their field of work hence boosting their resumes. This is important when it comes to job hunting after completion of studies.

Research has shown that students that have undertaken part-time jobs and gained relevant experience have the upper hand when it comes to getting jobs, unlike those that are just fresh from school. On the other hand, working part-time for recognized organizations increases one’s chances of landing a better job.

Time Management Skills

Having a part-time job helps students to acquire time management skills in the sense that they treasure every time they get and use it efficiently. This happens because their study time is now preoccupied with the job, thus having to restructure their schedule to fit in the study time, work time, leisure time, etc.

Learn the value of money

Most parents have complained that their children who are students do not know the value of money until they get jobs. Therefore, students who take part in part-time jobs while in school are in a position to understand the value of money, thus using it well in the future (Pickett 1). For instance, they are now able to refrain from impulse buying and resulting in smart shopping hence making their money last longer than before. This, as a result, makes them responsible adults even in the future.

Other benefits associated with part-time jobs are that the students get new ideas while in the workplace (Somoski 1). This happens mostly for challenging courses that need great minds, such as web design, whereby the students learn new technologies as soon as they are generated. Last but not least is the improvement in communication skills since the student interacts with different people at the workplace.

As mentioned above, the decision to engage in part-time jobs is wholly dependent on the student. This is because there are disadvantages that come in handy with a student engaging in part-time jobs.

Among them is the effect it has on students’ performance, given the less time allocated for study (Anti Essays 1). Other students may be overwhelmed by their greed for money and end up forgoing their studies to indulge in full-time jobs hence affecting their education.

In a nutshell, it can be concluded that the pros of part-time jobs for students outweigh the cons. From the discussion above, the benefits that a student gets on deciding to engage in part-time jobs are endless. The good thing is that the disadvantages attached to part-time jobs for students are manageable depending on the mind and focus of the students in their education and life.

Teenagers and Part-Time Jobs: Benefits, Drawbacks and Tips

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, 50 percent of American teenagers hold informal jobs, such as babysitting or yard work, by age 12. Boys tend to begin their jobs at younger ages and work more hours than girls. By age 15, nearly two-thirds of American teens have had some kind of employment. By the time teens graduate from high school, 80% will have held a part-time job at some time during the school year. The average high school student works 20 hours per week, and about 10% work full time (35 hours or more).

There are many obstacles to teens obtaining employment. Finding reliable transportation is critical, and that can be difficult if the job is not close by and the teen’s parent(s) work. Fighting stereotypes that employers have about adolescents, such as poor attitudes or lack of skills, can be challenging. In this particular economy, there aren’t very many job opportunities for teens.

Teens want to work for a variety of reasons, but more than half report their involvement in work is motivated by the desire to buy things. Typically, teens spend their money on car expenses, recreational expenses, clothing, educational expenses, saving for college, and helping their families with living expenses (e.g., rent, groceries).

Researchers have studied and debated the benefits and drawbacks of teens and part-time jobs for more than 2 decades. Many researchers, including those on government panels like the National Commission on Youth, praise part-time work and say it contributes to the transition from youth to adulthood. Other studies have found significant negative consequences to students working over 20 hours a week. We will take a close look at both.

Benefits of Teens Holding a Part-Time Job

There are many benefits to adolescents obtaining employment, including:

• Obtain valuable work experiences, which are excellent for a resume.
• Learn how to effectively manage finances. Even if the teen is simply using their earnings to pay for their own expenses, they will learn to budget between clothes, movies, and car expenses.
• May provide networking possibilities and set a child on a rewarding lifetime career path.
• Provide constructive use of free time. An after-school job can also provide adult supervision, especially if you work longer hours than those in a typical school day. Employment gives teens less time to engage in risky behaviors.
• Learn time management skills.
• Form good work habits.
• Gain useful, marketable skills such as improving their communication, learning how to handle people, developing interview skills and filling out job applications.
• Instill new confidence, sense of responsibility and independence.

Drawbacks of Teens Holding a Part-Time Job

There are also negative consequences of teen employment that may outweigh the positive benefits, such as:

• Less time for homework. Working students may not have or make the time to complete their work.
• Higher rates of absenteeism and less school involvement. Employment may place constraints on the student’s study and sleep time. Fatigue or lack of preparation for the day’s academic activities may discourage the working teen from going to school and a job may take the place of extracurricular activities.
• Lower grades in school. Students who work more than 20 hours a week have grade point averages that are lower than other students who work 10 or less hours a week.
• More likely to use drugs and alcohol. Research suggests that substance abuse is higher for students who work 20 or more hours per week.
• Development of negative views of work itself. Early entry into a negative or harsh work environment may encourage negative views of work. This would depend greatly on the maturity level of the teenager and the type of job obtained.
• Increased stress. Balancing work and school can prove to be too much for any student.

Research seems to suggest that students that work 10 hours or less a week gain the benefits of employment, while students that work over 20 hours a week suffer the negative consequences of work mentioned above. Other factors that affect how students handle employment and school life include the intensity and difficulty of the work done.

Summer Employment

Summer employment is an excellent alternative, as it does not interfere with schooling and provides teens with a constructive use of their free time. It allows adolescents to garner all the benefits of employment without overtaxing their busy school schedules. Teens should begin looking for summer employment during Spring Break. Possible jobs for teens are: landscaping, delivering newspapers, babysitting, retail stores (such as grocery stores or clothing stores), movie theaters, working at a theme park, being a camp counselor, lifeguarding at a pool, and dog walking.

Work Requirements

The U.S. Department of Labor sets the minimum age for employment at 14. It also limits the number of hours worked by minors under the age of 16. However, minimum age requirements do not apply to minors employed by their parents or guardian. Youths of any age may also deliver newspapers; perform in radio, television, movie, or theatrical productions; and babysit or perform other minor duties around a private home. Laws regulating employment of minors vary among states and U.S. territories, for example, many states require youth to obtain an employment and/or age certificate prior to being hired. Many times these certificated are issued by the school, but you should contact your state’s Department of Labor for more information.

How Parents Can Help Working Teens

Before your teen applies for employment, be sure to discuss the pros and cons with him or her, as well as the responsibilities associated with a job. You may also want to agree to a job on a trial basis, such as “you can work x number of hours a week this grading period and then we will decide if you can keep working, based on your grades.” There are several things that you as a parent can do for your teen to help ease the stress associated with juggling school, work, and family life:

• Come to a consensus about how you expect your teen to use his or her income. Will they be helping out with family finances? Would you like them to begin saving for college? Reaching a consensus will help to avoid later conflicts about money. Prepare a budget with your child, setting limits on spending and enforcing a percentage-of- paycheck-into-savings policy with which you’re both comfortable.
• Create a daily or weekly schedule with your teen that highlights the time that they spend working and the time they spend on homework and other school-related activities.
• Set up family time periodically. This could be once a week or month and is a time where you and your teen can reconnect through conversations, game playing, or family outings.
• Teach your teen practical ways to manage adverse situations on their jobs as well as in school.
• Teach your teen effective ways to manage the many demands that are made on their time. As they move closer to adulthood it will be necessary to manage many demanding roles as their responsibilities increase. This is a good time to learn how to use their time and resources wisely.
• Most importantly, be supportive.

Part-time jobs can be a wonderful experience, with the right supervision and parental guidance.

All teenagers must have a job. Teaches them responsibility. The current generation of youths are going to turn out to be lazy because all they do is play video games. All teenagers need a job, even if it is a job working a few hours a day.Please check out my blog, for ideas for youths.

As a student myself I already work hard during school and even on weekends because of school. I barely get time for myself because of school even if I am on top of my work, that’s how much they pressure use to do better and give us loads of work. And even during summer I don’t have much time for myself either, I take extra curricular classes and summer classes and I have little time for just myself. don’t call us lazy and especially me when you are probably not in school anymore, things change and I personally don’t think you can just call all youth lazy. I personally put everything into my education and making myself a good person and I didn’t need a job to give me these life lessons.

I’m a senior this year and I work 20 hours a week and I’m taking all my core classes so I am loaded on homework this year. It is extremely stressful and I would not recommend it to anyone unless you have a lot of motivation and are willing to giv up most of your social life. If you are currently in school I would not recommend working more than 10 hours a week. 15 at tops unless you want to be stressed and not get proper sleep

I am still at school and worj for 30 hours a week i agree it is very stressful. I tend to leave my howework undone and not to stud enough for tests and although I get good grades they could get much better if I didn’t work and my grades wouldn’t look so much like a yoyo sometimes ver high and others very low :/ I also lack social life since only sundays are off. To sum up I strongly discourage working for more than 20 hours.

I work 42 hours a week and have a 4.0 its all about your work ethic people are to quick to just say its to stressful and give up thats why I always push myself to work more hours to prove how lazy and how quickly others quit and thats why i want my kids to work someday because it installs the never quit attitude.

Im in college full time, taking 5 classes at nights and on the weekends, and I work 45 hours a week at my job. The truth is, some people can’t go to school and support themselves on 15 or 20 hours a week. High school teens having jobs is good, because it prepares them for the work-study balance that they may have to live with in college.

Well another option for teens is to work online. There are lots of work from home employment opportunities out there for them. Among the advantages that they can get is better pay and they don’t have to leave the house. Transportation alone takes a lot of time. Do you want your child going through their life, wondering what it is like to not have a job? To wonder, how would it be if I could actually be a teenager and hang out with my friends when I am not in school? I would never want that for my child. If they want a job, I will encourage them. What Students Are Saying About Having a Part-Time Job While in School

We asked teenagers about their after-school jobs and what they think young people can learn from working. Some said it’s not for everyone.

The week we asked teenagers: Should All High School Students Have Part-Time Jobs? The question was inspired by an Opinion essay by Pamela Paul , in which she argued that even while lots of American teenagers need to work to help support their families, “there’s a case to be made that those who don’t need to work should get a job anyway.”

Many students said they agreed. They shared the jobs they have had and the invaluable skills they have learned from them. But others said work isn’t for everyone — kids today are already under too much pressure, they argued, and their time is better spent studying, doing the extracurricular activities they enjoy, and being with friends and family.

Before you read their responses below, we want to take a moment to recognize the students this week who have been replying to others in the comments across our writing prompts, including those from Atrisco Heritage Academy High School, Centerville High School, Hoggard High School, Nashoba Regional High School, Reynoldsburg High School, and Roaring Fork High School . You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic

Many children are encouraged by their parents to get a part time job in their free time. What are the advantages and disadvantages to children of doing so?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

Nowadays, parents motivate their children to indulge in various kinds of activities and doing a part time job is one of them. In this essay, I will shed some light on the pros and cons of doing a part time job.

It is evident that parents are supporting their children to do part time job; thereby, leading to obvious outcomes: the children learn the importance of money and also become a responsible person. Doing part-time job at an early stage of life not only teaches them the importance of earning money, but also prevents them from being a spendthrift. For instance, during my college days, I used to take part-time tuition classes which taught me to save my hard-earned money. Further, working part time also makes the children a responsible person. To exemplify, odd-jobs like a pizza-boy teach the children how the employer is dependent on them to run his business; consequently, they do their work seriously/ sincerely and take complete responsibility.

However, every coin has two sides and despite all the advantages of a temporary job, there are some drawbacks too. Firstly, it will disturb the regular schedule of the children. To illustrate, the students are already burdened with their own study schedule; therefore, doing other jobs will affect their studies. Moreover, they will not be able to spend time with their parents. To exemplify, children will have to do the part-time job in evening or night only after the school hours; as a result, they may not be able to spend any quality time with their parents.

In conclusion, a part-time job has a plethora of advantages and disadvantages. On balance, however, I tend to believe that parents should motivate/ encourage their children to do the part-time job as it teaches them better qualities; provided that, they manage their daily routine properly.

You should spend 40 minutes on this task. Some people believe it is a good idea for students to work part time to ensure better opportunities in future. Others are of the opinion, job during study distracts the individual. Discuss both views and give your opinion. Write at least 250 words.

SAMPLE ANSWER -One 

Part-time job is the kind of work a person does for a fewer hours per week allowing an individual to explore different other aspects of his or her character. While in many countries it is common for students to work part time allowing them the freedom to learn their course practically, allowing better knowledge about their subject. Some people are of the opinion, that a job during the student years take away the time and attention required during education.

Doing a part time job while studying surely ensures a more practical knowledge about a subject to the student. For example, a student doing a course on mechanical engineering is more likely to know about what he or she is studying when they get to work on the real tools in real life scenario. Even more, part time jobs allow students to become more independent. Most students are seen to save money from their part time jobs for their graduation.

However, odd jobs are very tough to handle for students. They need to focus not only on their studies but also work, leaving them drained off, with no social life. It has been even observed that some student leave their education to work, while in many cases there have been positive results, in many the students were left with neither a good job nor a better education.

Overall, part time jobs offer more exposure to the students about their subjects, if chosen wrongly, it can leave the person drained off to pursue other plans. In my opinion, an individual should do a part time job, but it should always be something that he or she loves to do and enhances their personality.

SAMPLE ANSWER -Two

Most of the successful companies that we have today in our world, from Apple to Microsoft, the successful people that we cherish, from Shahrukh Khan to Kangana Ranaut, started with what they do as part time job. It was when they realized that they have fallen in love with this work, that they did actually made it big. Many people are of the opinion that part time jobs allow an individual to explore his or interest early in life while others believe that more often a part time jobs leave the person drained off to pursue future plans.

Odd jobs surely help an individual to grow, to perform better and work on the different skills that he or she has. For example, a person may like writing, but when he or she starts working as a part time writer they get to know the seriousness of their interest. It becomes much more easier for them to make a choice of career later in life because they have already become aware of their potential. Even more, a part time job, allows a person to learn different aspects of life, like hard work, punctuality, discipline which may or may not directly affect their lives.

However, if done in a wrong way, often leads to emaciation. Even more, part time job workers are not included in the health benefits and the other services that the company offers to its regular employees. Also, a part time job worker is less likely to get a promotion as compared to a regular worker. A student can find it difficult to focus on studies, sometimes skipping classes to fulfill the sleep that he or she missed. It could make up for a very stressful life for the student, when there entire focus should be on grasping knowledge.

In conclusion, nothing is perfect. Maintaining a job while studying is not what everyone can do. It demands lot of focus from the individual. One need to make sure that they learn things well in school, meanwhile maintaining a balanced work. However, in my opinion a person who is able to do it, is more likely to benefit more than his or her counter parts.

Many museums charge for admission while others are free. Do you think the advantages of charging people for admission to museums outweigh the disadvantages?

Some people like to try new things, for example, places to visit and types of food. other people prefer to keep doing things they are familiar with., does being famous have more advantages or more disavantages, robots and artificial intelligence are being developed to replace humans in workplace. why is this happening do you think will have a positive or negative impact on society, today, some food travels thousands of miles from farms to consumers. some people think that it would be better to our environment and economy if people only eat locally produced food. to what extent do the disadvantages outweigh the advantages.

Job of Moscow

Our father among the saints Job ( + 1607) was the first Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia. He is commemorated by the Church on June 19 and April 5 .

St Job was born into the family of pious tradesmen in Staritsa near Tver in the 1530s. His baptismal name was John. As a teenager, John knew most of the biblical texts by heart and strove to become a monk . His father, however, insisted on his marriage . Once, John asked his father's permission to see his confessor in the Uspensky Monastery in their native town of Staritsa (Tver Oblast). Upon his arrival, John immediately took monastic vows and assumed the name of Job. He spent fifteen years in the cloister and finally became its abbot in 1566 with the help of Ivan the Terrible , who had made Staritsa his residence in times of the Oprichnina (secret police).

In 1571, Job was transferred to Moscow and appointed abbot of the Simonov Monastery . In 1575, he became the abbot of the Novospassky Monastery. In 1581, Job was appointed bishop of Kolomna.

Known as a person of mediocre mental abilities, he, nevertheless, managed to draw attention of Boris Godunov by his talent for reading the longest of prayers by heart in a very expressive manner. During the reign of Feodor I (whose government was controlled by Boris Godunov), Job was appointed archbishop of Rostov and Metropolitan of Moscow and All Russia in 1587.

Realizing the necessity of strengthening the ecclesiastic authority in Russia , Godunov managed to persuade the Patriarch of Constantinople Jeremias II to establish a patriarchate in Russia. On January 26 , 1589, Job was elected the first Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia. He exercised all his influence and played a major part in Boris Godunov's ascending to the Russian throne.

Job did not approve, however, Godunov's proposal to open a university in Moscow with foreign professors because he believed their influence and non- Orthodox faith would cause "heterodoxy" and endanger the authority of the Russian Church. Under Job's supervision, the Russians corrected books for divine service and prepared them for publishing.

He assisted in glorification of some of the Russian saints , ordering the celebration of the memory of Basil Fool for Christ in 1588, as well as that of Joseph Volotsky and others. Job also favored the construction of new cathedrals and monasteries and Christian missionary activities in the recently conquered Astrakhan Khanate and Siberia. After the mysterious death of tsarevich Dmitry Ivanovich in 1591, Jove accepted the noncriminal version of his demise, supporting Boris Godunov every step of the way.

After the invasion of False Dmitriy I and sudden death of Boris Godunov on June 1 , 1605, there was an uprising in Moscow.

Job was known as a harsh critic of False Dmitriy I, and he tried to persuade the people of Moscow to remain loyal to the deceased tsar. The armed supporters of the impostor burst into the Cathedral of the Dormition, and a boyar named P.F. Basmanov declared Job a traitor. Job was sent into exile to his monastery in Staritsa, where he went completely blind and finally died a very sick man in 1607.

In 1652, Job's relics were transferred to the Cathedral of the Dormition of the Moscow Kremlin, where they remain to this day. Patriarch Job was glorified as a saint by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1989.
