assignment ASSIGNMENT (index finger to palm version) Yes, I'm cheating on my assignment (heh) and using the same graphic as I use in the sign for "NEGATIVE." (Bad teacher.) Actually to differentiate between the two signs (if you need to) you can start the sign "ASSIGNMENT" closer to the mouth. ASSIGNMENT ("appointment" version) This sign circles (horizontally, either counterclockwise or clockwise but I prefer clockwise) the dominant hand in an "A" handshape above the stationary non-dominant "A" hand (or "S" hand) then bring the dominant hand down on top of the non-dominant hand. APPOINTMENT / assignment: Also see: " APPOINTMENT "

Hands-On Communication: A Starter Kit to American Sign Language

Contrary to what many might think, sign language isn't just about hand signals. It's an intricate dance of gestures, facial expressions, and postures.
In fact, American Sign Language (ASL) is a language that bridges gaps, fostering inclusivity and understanding within the Deaf community. Let's dive into the essentials of ASL, a journey not just into a language but into a rich, cultural dialogue.
This is a primer into engaging with the language and its community.
Understanding the Structure
ASL isn't simply visual English. It has its own grammar, syntax, and rules — think of it as painting with your hands, where each gesture has its own grammar. For example, ASL often uses the TIME + TOPIC + COMMENT structure, offering a dynamic way to convey information that differs fundamentally from spoken English.
In ASL, your face and body do as much talking as your hands. A raised eyebrow or a tilted stance isn't just flair; they're integral parts of the conversation, providing the nuances and punctuation that spoken languages convey through voice modulation.
Getting Started with Basic Signs
Embarking on ASL learning can be daunting, but breaking it down into simple, everyday words can build your confidence. From greetings like " Hello " to expressions of courtesy such as " Please " and " Thank you ," these foundational signs are your first steps toward fluency.
Introducing kids to ASL can be a fun and enlightening process. Start with signs for everyday items , food , and family . It's not just educational but also a way to instill empathy and understanding from a young age.
Techniques and Best Practices
ASL requires precision. The placement of a hand or the orientation of a palm can change the meaning of a sign. Smooth, confident movements ensure that your attempts at communication are clear and understood.
Simultaneous communication, or 'sim-com,' mixing sign and spoken words, can lead to grammatical errors in ASL. Also, remember, eye contact in sign language is equivalent to listening in spoken conversation — it’s all about giving and receiving respect and attention.
![sign assignment in asl sign assignment in asl](https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/5f0a377561756321899b9e96/665763006851ff5e545139da__GmsOGmJfrLNmNR9dsRF6HFi7ST2_j-ZBDAl6ijSxps7oR-DITKwUD6__U3T1uX4OhzYvKQJbrE_tTS41CfLvUDakL_9GqCsOMt0zht4BvCfT2q5_PU8CUO6C79eSj53FK03fzCJQZN6WGq5zFYAtPc.jpeg)
Mastering ASL is an ongoing endeavor that extends far beyond memorizing signs. It's about cultural immersion, continuous learning, and most importantly, about making meaningful connections.
Fluency in ASL not only opens up new avenues for personal and professional growth but also deepens your engagement with a diverse community. It’s about more than just communication — it’s about cultural enrichment and cognitive development.

Video guidelines and tips for ASL students
These video guidelines and tips may be helpful for your ASL assignments. But, you should follow your ASL instructor's official video signing criteria or guidelines for your video-mediated assignments. Your instructor may have some different expectations.
A purpose of this post is more of an entertainment value. So, enjoy!
Handling a video camera
Use a tripod or a solid surface. Avoid handheld shaking. Such eyesore for a Deaf instructor's native eyes!
Avoid a mirror effect in your camera. The direction or room description may end up the opposite from the actual scene.
Don't use effects. No editing at all -- no cuts, no speed change, etc. I can tell whenever my ASL 101 student edits his/her video with a speed. This would affect their mark in fluency.
Setting up a video frame
Stay within the signing frame from the top of your head to your waist.
Scenario: You cut off your hands or even arms.
Avoid a close-up that might cut off your signing frame.
Scenario: You set up your phone in a vertical orientation.
Use a horizontal frame. A vertical frame with black sides is not acceptable. It's a pet peeve.
Scenario: You set distance shot a long distance in hope that your instructor misses your mispronunciation in ASL and save a few points.
Sorry, this mission fails. You cannot fool a Deaf eye but time is inconvenient for the instructor as marking videos is time-consuming. To save your marks, show your signing clearly and visibly.
Use a straight angle, not high nor low.
Use sufficient lighting to see your signing clear. Avoid lighting in the background (e.g. window) that makes you look like a shadow.
Wear a solid color that contrasts your skin color. No hat or hair in your face. No chewing.
Scenario: You dress up for your video assignment.
It's unnecessary, really. It doesn't affect your mark. But, don't be scruffy, neither.
Or, sometimes it's too much. Whether wearing make-up or not doesn't make a difference for your mark.
But, a long bright red (or cyan blue) fingernail painting ritual prior to video recording is really unnecessary. It can be eyesore. Imagine a long painted fingernail swooping near an eyeball. Shivering?
Checklist your video
Check your video before uploading it to eclass. Make sure that none of these happens to you.
Scenario: Your video submission can occasionally turn out like this -- upside down or sideway.
The instructor may watch your video on her/his laptop as a desktop, not a tablet. It could be a hassle to turn the laptop upside down. And worse, to pause the video, one would have to manipulate a mouse in the opposite direction. For this all, maybe deduct a couple of points on your mark.
Or, your video may cut off in the middle of your work.
Well, it did happen occasionally (ok, rarely). One out of 75 students in one semester hits this jackpot. Not just check your video but watch it from the beginning to the end before submitting it.
Good luck. Too many rules, I know. But, use your general common (not always common) sense to make your video a good quality that is pleased to eye.
Time again and again
You feel anxious when your instructor is picking out a student to do a signing task...
.. and you feel envious of a class peer who is adept in conversing beyond his basic signing skill...

Washington Nationals Sign Former Tampa Bay Rays Designated Hitter Harold Ramírez

- Tampa Bay Rays
The Washington Nationals have signed outfielder/designated hitter Harold Ramírez to a minor league contract, the team announced Saturday afternoon.
The Tampa Bay Rays designated Ramírez for assignment on June 7. He was released on Friday, making him a free agent and opening the door for him to join the Nationals.
Ramírez is set to report to Triple-A Rochester.
The Nationals have agreed to terms on a Minor League contract with outfielder Harold Ramirez. He will report to Triple-A Rochester. — Nationals Communications (@NationalsComms) June 15, 2024
Ramírez was batting .268 with one home run, 13 RBI, five stolen bases, a .589 OPS and a 0.1 WAR before the Rays removed him from their 40-man roster. He hit just .189 with one RBI and a .400 OPS between May 10 and June 5, failing to record an extra-base hit in that stretch.
There were trade rumors circulating around Ramírez this past offseason, but the Rays wound up becoming the latest team to ship him away for nothing.
Before he ever made his MLB debut, Ramírez bounced around from the Pittsburgh Pirates to the Toronto Blue Jays , then to the Miami Marlins . Ramírez enjoyed a promising rookie campaign with the Marlins in 2019, but he was eventually cut loose and failed to find much success until the Chicago Cubs traded him to Tampa Bay in March 2022.
Ramírez then hit .306 with a .780 OPS and 3.3 WAR between 2022 and 2023, appearing in 120 and 122 games, respectively. Per 162 games, he averaged 12 home runs, 29 doubles, 165 hits and 84 RBI, all while owning a 121 OPS+.
The 29-year-old wasn't coming anywhere near that kind of production in 2024, though, which is why the Rays let him walk. Still, it isn't surprising that those numbers drew the Nationals' interest, even if they only gave him a minor league contract.
After all, first baseman Joey Gallo is on the injured list, and Eddie Rosatio hasn't exactly thrived since taking over as designated hitter. The 32-year-old outfielder is batting .185 with a .586 OPS on the whole this season.

Cards catcher Willson Contreras likely will begin a minor league rehab assignment on Tuesday
St. Louis Cardinals catcher Willson Contreras likely will begin a minor league rehab assignment on Tuesday
CHICAGO — St. Louis Cardinals catcher Willson Contreras likely will begin a minor league rehab assignment on Tuesday.
Contreras has been out since he was hit by a swing on May 7, breaking his left forearm. He had surgery the following day.
The 32-year-old Contreras had a couple of batting practice sessions in St. Louis this weekend. Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said before Sunday's 2-1 victory at the Cubs that he wasn’t sure just yet where Contreras was going to do his rehab stint.
Contreras, a three-time All-Star, is batting .280 with six homers and 12 RBIs in 31 games this season.
St. Louis placed right-hander Kyle Gibson on the bereavement list before the series finale at Wrigley Field. Right-hander Ryan Loutos was recalled from Triple-A Memphis.
Gibson pitched seven sparkling innings in Friday’s 3-0 victory over the Cubs. Marmol said he thinks Gibson will be back in time for his next start Wednesday at Miami.
Marmol also said infielder-outfielder Tommy Edman is moving his rehab to the team’s facility in Florida this week. Edman hasn’t played this season because of a right wrist sprain.
“When we’re at home, it’s easier to get a lot of things done, like defensive work and hit on the field,” Marmol said. “Now he’s at a point where he can get on the field and do all those things. So when we’re on the road, it’s much easier for him to just be where there’s coaches and activity going on all the time in Florida.”
