“No pain, no gain” is quite an old proverb dating back to the second century. In The Ethics of the Fathers, the Rabbi writes:

“According to the pain is the gain.”

One of the oldest printed records of the proverb comes from the poet Robert Herrick in his “ Hesperides .” Published in 1650:

No Pains, No Gains. If little labour, little are our gains: Man’s fate is according to his pains. — Hesperides 752.

In 1670, John Rays wrote a Collection of English proverbs , featuring:

“Without pains, no gains.”

In The Way to Wealth (reprinted in 1758), Benjamin Franklin penned the proverb as:

“There are no gains without pains.”

It was made into a famous catchphrase in the 80s by Jane Fonda (US actor) in her aerobics videos. She shouted, “ No pain, no gain” and “Feel the burn” during her workouts. From this, we hear the mantra repeated all over the western world, most often by athletic or sports coaches and personal trainers (probably in your local gym) nowadays.

Are you sure the saying “no pain, no gain” is actually correct? Let’s have a look at its origins and usage in religion, economics, fitness and psychology before.

Language can easily hide huge contents in tiny containers, so that we don’t have to struggle over the ideas behind a word: we simply use the word, without wasting our time reflecting over the concept it relates to. What happens, though, when we stop and take a closer look? Well, sometimes we can see the origin of a word, its etymology, and travel back in time. Other times, we can dig deeper and see the origin of an idea, its development through the centuries, and an innocent catchphrase becomes the vehicle of a whole worldview . This is the case with the idiom “no pain, no gain”.

The meaning of this idiom is quite simple to catch: a chievements require some sort of sacrifice . This might be what your parents used to tell you when, as a kid, you didn’t want to spend the whole afternoon exercising for the dance recital or the final exams. You might have heard it later in life, from your gym instructor, or even at work, when you were thinking about that promotion you longed for.

He wouldn't have liked that but it was no pain, no gain in this case.

Even though this catchphrase gained popularity in the Eighties, when Jane Fonda used it as her slogan for her aerobics workout videos , together with “Feel the burn”, the idiom “No pain, no gain” is older than you may think. The concept dates back to the V Century BC, when the ancient Greek playwright Sophocles wrote that “there’s no success without pain” in his play Electra. The same idea crossed borders and centuries, to resurface in the Jewish world. In chapter Five of The Ethics of the Fathers (Pirkei Avot), a document consisting of sayings of Jewish sages who lived from 300 BCE to 200 CE, we find some something very similar: “According to the pain is the gain” . Much later in time, we find the same idea in a poem by Robert Herrick in his “Hesperides”, published in 1650:

If little labour, little are our gains:
Man's fate is according to his pains.

A similar version of the phrase was created by Benjamin Franklin in 1734, to illustrate the axiom "God helps those who help themselves":

Industry need not wish, as Poor Richard says, and he that lives upon hope will die fasting. There are no gains, without pains...

As he was one of the early philosophers of capitalism, sociologist Max Weber used Franklin’s autobiography to connect his attraction to the “no pain, no gain” philosophy to the risks of investing in a new business: in those situations in fact there is always the chance of failure , along with the potential for great success. According to Weber, capitalism creeps into every corner of our lives, leaving us trapped in a “steel shell” where economic thought dominates even non-economic aspects of our lives. Why should economic logic guide what we do outside of the economic sphere? That was the underlying question for him.

What shaped capitalism was the Protestant work ethic : when it comes to accumulating profit, what’s better than hard work, self-denial, plus the threat of eternal damnation for the couch potatoes (by the way, if you want to know more about this idiom check out this post )? The only way to gain Heaven is atoning for our sins, which is just another way of saying “No pain, no gain”.

However, from a psychological point of view, pain doesn’t actually lead us to gain anything. Traumas do not make us stronger, nor do they let us gain a wiser mindset. As Noam Shpancer wrote in this article , “American culture, itself born of trauma and imbued with a hopeful can-do ethos, wants to believe this idea, finding it self-affirming. Once we have acquired a certain belief, we tend to see, remember, and report mostly instances and events that support it. This is called confirmation bias.” Our rationalising the pain in order to get past it and state that at least all that suffering made us better, together with our tendency to seek details to support our preexisting theories, and see meaning and causality when events simply happen at the same time, all help explain how we arrive at our belief in pain as something which makes us stronger . Despite what you might think though, if you get stronger after a hard time, that is probably despite, not because of it. What doesn't kill us makes us weaker, not stronger.

Considering pain from another point of view, that of fitness , pressing too hard can lead to injury, illness and exhaustion. With running, for instance, pushing through pain can lead to a secondary injury, as this article explains. Pain is a powerful alarm system warning us when we are harming ourselves: it actually asks us to back off. Forcing through pain can have long-term negative outcomes to our body and our fitness level: chronic pain even results in loss of brain connections to the painful area.

The idiom “No pain, no gain” refers to the fact that, in order to succeed, we must endure some pain. According to psychologists and doctors, though, we shouldn’t force ourselves too much, both in our fitness training and in our lives. While writing this post, a Roman proverb my grandma used to say is coming up to my mind: “Chi bella vo’ compari’, qualche male ha da soffri’ ” , which translates to “Those who want to look beautiful must suffer a bit”. This saying is addressed to women, summarizing a whole line of thought, from “In sorrow thou shalt bring forth children” to waxing, diets, high heels and all that jazz. In order to gain a husband, you’ve got to suffer . Don’t misunderstand me: I loved my grandma, and she was not at all a bigot. Yet, even though she was a creative mind and an educated woman, she still used to say it. And even though I stopped waxing because to me that’s just too much pain, I sometimes hear that saying in my mind.

When it happens, I just slow down, take a breath and shush that voice. How many among us ended a relationship because there’s no gain when we feel too much pain? How many had to realize they were wasting their lives overworking in order to get a promotion? This is the reason why I strongly recommend you stop and think twice before saying something like “No pain, no gain”: we shouldn’t have to endure trauma, either physical or psychological, in order to achieve our target.

In her exercise videos, Jane Fonda made the phrase famous. “No pain, no gain.” This idea captures a core truth in psychoanalysis —so much so that Sigmund might have said it himself!

Freud put forward the idea that there are essentially two guiding methods by which we can approach life: the pleasure-pain principle and the reality principle. We all begin with the first and some of us get the hang of the second as time goes by.

The first way of approaching life is by avoiding pain and seeking pleasure. It is a very simple system. If it feels good, then eat it, take it, or do it. If it feels bad, then spit it out, get rid of it, or avoid it. This works pretty well for most organisms. It is a simple, rudimentary system that helps even bacteria survive! For a little while, it works pretty well for people, too. During the first few months of our lives—when life is pretty simple and all we need to do is eat, poop, and sleep—the pleasure-pain principle is a winning strategy. Smile and coo if it feels good; frown and scream bloody murder if it feels bad. In either case, mom will come running, and all will be well.

The second way of approaching life is to willingly take on painful experiences now in an effort to have gains later. I know, it sounds a little crazy, but bear with me. This second strategy underlies the psychological concepts of “delayed gratification” and “frustration tolerance” which are so essential as we mature because they have direct bearing on everyday matters like standing in the grocery store line, putting money in your savings account, going to college, and even biting your tongue when you want to yell at the guy on the freeway who just cut you off. Freud called it “the reality principle,” because he believed that these capacities are necessary if we are to deal with the complex reality of adult life in an effective way. I call it hard work.

One of the main principles of life is that our attitude toward work makes or breaks us. If we live out our whole lives under the sway of the pleasure-pain principle, we will never make the kinds of investments that lead to a successful, satisfying life. We will never learn to walk, speak, ride a bicycle, or bake a cake. We will eat too much and exercise too little. We will spend too much and save too little. We will be taken over by our greed which will never be satisfied. We will miss opportunities because we are too frightened to take a risk. We will avoid having intimate relationships (or, really, any relationships at all) because relationships by definition involve conflict, pain, and separateness—which we will not be able to stand, even though that means we will never love or be loved. Put simply, we will waste away because we never challenge ourselves to do anything that means anything. Freud also called the pleasure-pain principle the Nirvana principle. But when you stop to think about it, Nirvana in reality is a pretty miserable place.

Lucky for us, though, we are capable of more than that. The reason we are capable of more than that is because we have minds. We human beings have the potential to shape our lives in extremely productive ways so that we can learn, grow, be in relationship, and develop a lasting sense of security even in the face of threats and challenges. But the mind needs to be developed, and the only way it can be developed is to be challenged. Like the body, the mind needs to be exercised in order to get stronger. And the way the mind is exercised is by taking on painful, confusing, and frustrating experiences and building the capacity to deal with them.

Wilfred Bion, a British psychoanalyst who came to Los Angeles in the late 1960’s, thought a lot about how we grow our minds by learning through experience, by facing frustration rather than evading it. He thought of this process as developing mental muscle. I love that image. Just like we must challenge the body to develop physical muscle, so we must challenge the mind to grow mental muscle. It cannot happen in a vacuum. It cannot happen without pain. It cannot happen in Nirvana. We must push ourselves to engage with the real world, in all of its complexities, with all of its challenges, in the face of its uncertainties and even our fears. We must feel the burn.

Hard work grows the mind.

By growing the mind through this kind of hard work, we reap great rewards. We develop more capacity to deal with life. What once seemed difficult now seems pretty easy. What once frightened us now feels like no big deal. And if that weren’t satisfying enough, there’s even a bonus! Because we can see that we have gotten stronger, we have greater confidence that we can grow even stronger still. This is the basis of feeling capable , which I think is one of the most important underpinnings of mental health.

In putting off today’s pleasures by investing in tomorrow’s rewards, we tend to be healthier, happier, and more successful. Why is this? Fundamentally, I think we reap these rewards because we have earned them. Now, I don’t mean that we’ve earned them like we’ve been good little boys and girls and so now we get our prize. I mean we have earned them in the sense that we have worked for them and so we can feel confident, deep in our bones, that they belong to us. Rewards that come by luck are fleeting, because we know we didn’t do anything to bring them about. But rewards that come through hard work feel more lasting and make us feel more secure because we know that we deserve them—and that, if we keep working, we can even have more of them.

Thomas Jefferson once said, “The harder I work, the luckier I get.”

He sure got that right.

Chances are you’ve heard the quote “No pain, no gain” before. Especially if you enjoy hitting the gym and getting a nice pump going on. What this means is that in order to make your muscles grow, you’ll have to shred the fibers so they can grow back bigger and stronger. This progress causes physical pain because you’re tearing apart your muscles, but the reward for the pain is always worth it.

Many people don’t realize that this golden quote applies everywhere. Even outside your local gym. In all the different areas of your life. Fitness, dating, finances, mental health. You’ve probably faced different challenges and setbacks in these areas, but have you ever wondered what kind of lesson you’ve gained? Have you ever thought about your progress and the impact that your failures have had on it?

Pain and gain in your everyday life

You probably know that if you want to achieve something, you’ll have to put in the effort. Nothing good in life comes without it. Just like you have to put the effort into your training to become fitter, you have to put effort into learning new skills when building a business. 

You’ll probably encounter pain when losing money, but those mistakes will teach you important lessons. When you’re looking for love, you’ll have to face rejection when approaching people. The list goes on. When you pursue your goals, there’s some pain you’ll have to go through to reach them. It may be physical pain at the gym or mental pain and stress in business.

So, whatever your dreams are, start seeing them from this perspective. Just like at the gym, every moment of pain and discomfort will be rewarded later. Don’t be afraid to encounter pain because it’s a sign that you’re making progress. The burn in your muscles will make them stronger, the pain of getting rejected will teach you how to approach better, and the pain of losing $1000 will teach you many valuable lessons in business. 

All this is something that will help you to succeed later. Mastering any area of life will require those painful repetitions and effort. No book or any information can replace the skill you gain from your own experience. So remember, it’s OK to fail, it’s OK to be stressed, and it’s OK to feel confused. It means you’re improving!

Using pain to your advantage

“What do you mean use pain to your advantage, are you insane?” No, I’m not. What I mean by this is that you should start seeing failure, rejection, and pain from a new perspective. One of the greatest differences between the top 1% of successful people and mediocrity is the way they treat failure.

Rather than seeing a painful failure as a sign of lower worth, consider it a great lesson. Just like a rep in the gym. The more it hurts, the more it will reward you later.

A rep in business could be investing in training that doesn’t work but will teach you how to find one that works. A rep in dating could be a brutal heartbreak that teaches you to not put another person on a pedestal. A rep with your mental health could be a negative experience that forces you to learn to control anxiety.

Do you see the point here? One of the fundamental, unwritten laws in this world is that if you want to achieve something great, you’ll have to put in the effort and exit your comfort zone.

Many people don’t do this because they aren’t patient enough to be consistent, or their ego and fear of failure are stopping them. Don’t let that toxic mentality hold you back. Rather than shrinking away and avoiding the risk of pain, put yourself out there and do that rep! And when you do those reps over and over again, you’ll reach success. Rather than seeing failures as heavy bricks in your mental backpack, you’re using them to build stairs that will reach the clouds one day.

Pain, the greatest motivator

Have you ever seen the following phenomenon in your life? Someone faces a horrible setback in their life such as failing in business or a brutal heartbreak. For a while, they’re feeling terrible but along with time, they change and end up becoming a new, better version of themselves. They may even claim that the setback was the best thing that ever happened for them.

I certainly have seen this and experienced it myself. The reason why this happens is very simple. When life hits you hard, you end up in a situation so painful, that it nearly forces you to take action and improve your life. Once you take that action, you become a better version of yourself.

There are two types of motivation. The first is a desire to move towards pleasure. This is the most common one. People see something they want and they go for it. Then there is the more powerful one, an urge to move away from pain . Obviously, the second one gives you better results because you start from a situation that’s painful and something you want to get rid of. Yes, it’s uncomfortable but extremely effective. This is how you can turn a major setback into your greatest advantage.

Start seeing different forms of pain and discomfort as reps that will reward you later. Just like at the gym. No pain, no gain. Once you apply this principle properly, you can achieve pretty much anything you want!

What if I told you that the negative thoughts or self-limiting beliefs that you may have, are not actually yours? In this article, I will discuss subconscious programming and how it can be reprogrammed in a way that allows you to reach your greatest potential. I will also provide tips on how you can integrate this information as a leader within the workplace.

The subconscious mind is shaped before we begin forming our own conscious thoughts, and these conscious thoughts are influenced by the subconscious mind. This means that even the thoughts that you’re consciously having, are merely an extension of that pre-existing conditioning. 

When something becomes deeply ingrained within your mind through repetition, and there are other supporting thoughts that reinforce it, you will identify this information as your truth. These repeated thoughts become beliefs, and your actions will align to support and validate these beliefs.

The Importance of Observing Your Thoughts

If you continuously tell yourself that you aren’t capable or good enough, how likely are you to put in the effort to challenge this narrative? If you’ve always been a procrastinator and tell yourself that you always will be, you’re going to continue procrastinating. If you run into an obstacle and don’t believe you can overcome it, you’re not going to look for solutions or try your best to resolve it.

It’s extremely important for you to become an observer of your thoughts and understand the impacts of how those thoughts can impact your life, relationships, and overall outlook on life. Here are some questions to help guide you: – What are your recurring negative thoughts, and how are they impacting your performance and relationships? 

– How have these thoughts held you back from achieving your goals and living the life that you’ve always dreamed of? 

– What have these thoughts already cost you and what else will they cost you if they don’t change? Societal conditioning, influenced by a lower level of collective consciousness, has made the experience of debilitating thoughts highly prevalent. It’s not your fault that you have them, but it is your responsibility to change them and choose better ones.

The Subconscious Must Be Reprogrammed 

Reprogramming the subconscious involves positive affirmations, visualization, and consistent repetition to replace negative beliefs with positive ones. You have to become aware of the thoughts that make you feel bad and do not serve your best interest. What are the growth-oriented thoughts that would you rather have instead? Any time that a debilitating thought crosses your mind, always correct it with new thought that uplifts, encourages and empowers you. Be consistent, be patient and understand that your logical mind will not make this process easy for you at first.

Being Delusional vs. Consciously Creating a Better Reality for Yourself 

By definition, the term delusional means “holding false beliefs or judgments about external reality that are held despite incontrovertible evidence to the contrary”. When you have held onto debilitating beliefs for so long and your previous actions have served as evidence to confirm their truth, it is inevitable that your logical mind will deem your new thoughts as delusional. This is where embracing change tends to become most challenging, as it involves confronting this resistance with unwavering commitment. 

What you have to understand is that your former beliefs and former actions do not dictate your future, unless they remain the same. As the old beliefs become obsolete and new beliefs take their place, there will also be new aligned actions that produce different results, and this will serve as evidence to support your new truth. That being said, the most delusional thing that anyone can do is elect to keep an unfavorable mindset that was programmed for them by external factors and willingly relinquish their own personal power as a result of it.

Success is Fundamentally Rooted in the Mindset

How we show up for ourselves and others, communicate with employees, and perform in business are deeply connected to our mindset and everything that has shaped it. Let’s delve into these interconnected aspects and explore five transformative tips that will catalyze positive change in the workplace. 

A growth-oriented mindset encourages resilience, adaptability, and a willingness to embrace challenges. On the other hand, a fixed mindset hinders progress and limits potential.
