Ancient egypt egyptian mummies.

The methods of embalming, or treating the dead body, that the ancient Egyptians used is called mummification. Using special processes, the Egyptians removed all moisture from the body, leaving only a dried form that would not easily decay. It was important in their religion to preserve the dead body in as life-like a manner as possible. So successful were they that today we can view the mummified body of an Egyptian and have a good idea of what he or she looked like in life, 3,000 years ago.

Mummification was practiced throughout most of early Egyptian history. The earliest mummies from prehistoric times probably were accidental. By chance, dry sand and air (since Egypt has almost no measurable rainfall) preserved some bodies buried in shallow pits dug into the sand. About 2600 BCE, during the Fourth and Fifth Dynasties, Egyptians probably began to mummify the dead intentionally. The practice continued and developed for well over 2,000 years, into the Roman Period (ca. 30 BCE–CE 364). Within any one period the quality of the mummification varied, depending on the price paid for it. The best prepared and preserved mummies are from the Eighteenth through the Twentieth Dynasties of the New Kingdom (ca. 1570–1075 BCE) and include those of Tutankhamen and other well-known pharaohs. It is the general process of this period that shall be described here.

Mummification Process

The mummification process took seventy days. Special priests worked as embalmers, treating and wrapping the body. Beyond knowing the correct rituals and prayers to be performed at various stages, the priests also needed a detailed knowledge of human anatomy. The first step in the process was the removal of all internal parts that might decay rapidly. The brain was removed by carefully inserting special hooked instruments up through the nostrils in order to pull out bits of brain tissue. It was a delicate operation, one which could easily disfigure the face. The embalmers then removed the organs of the abdomen and chest through a cut usually made on the left side of the abdomen. They left only the heart in place, believing it to be the center of a person's being and intelligence. The other organs were preserved separately, with the stomach, liver, lungs, and intestines placed in special boxes or jars today called canopic jars. These were buried with the mummy. In later mummies, the organs were treated, wrapped, and replaced within the body. Even so, unused canopic jars continued to be part of the burial ritual.

The embalmers next removed all moisture from the body. This they did by covering the body with natron, a type of salt which has great drying properties, and by placing additional natron packets inside the body. When the body had dried out completely, embalmers removed the internal packets and lightly washed the natron off the body. The result was a very dried-out but recognizable human form. To make the mummy seem even more life-like, sunken areas of the body were filled out with linen and other materials and false eyes were added.

Next the wrapping began. Each mummy needed hundreds of yards of linen. The priests carefully wound the long strips of linen around the body, sometimes even wrapping each finger and toe separately before wrapping the entire hand or foot. In order to protect the dead from mishap, amulets were placed among the wrappings and prayers and magical words written on some of the linen strips. Often the priests placed a mask of the person's face between the layers of head bandages. At several stages the form was coated with warm resin and the wrapping resumed once again. At last, the priests wrapped the final cloth or shroud in place and secured it with linen strips. The mummy was complete.
 The priests preparing the mummy were not the only ones busy during this time. Although the tomb preparation usually had begun long before the person's actual death, now there was a deadline, and craftsmen, workers, and artists worked quickly. There was much to be placed in the tomb that a person would need in the Afterlife. Furniture and statuettes were readied; wall paintings of religious or daily scenes were prepared; and lists of food or prayers finished. Through a magical process, these models, pictures, and lists would become the real thing when needed in the Afterlife. Everything was now ready for the funeral.

As part of the funeral, priests performed special religious rites at the tomb's entrance. The most important part of the ceremony was called the "Opening of the Mouth." A priest touched various parts of the mummy with a special instrument to "open" those parts of the body to the senses enjoyed in life and needed in the Afterlife. By touching the instrument to the mouth, the dead person could now speak and eat. He was now ready for his journey to the Afterlife. The mummy was placed in his coffin, or coffins, in the burial chamber and the entrance sealed up.

Such elaborate burial practices might suggest that the Egyptians were preoccupied with thoughts of death. On the contrary, they began early to make plans for their death because of their great love of life. They could think of no life better than the present, and they wanted to be sure it would continue after death.

But why preserve the body? The Egyptians believed that the mummified body was the home for this soul or spirit. If the body was destroyed, the spirit might be lost. The idea of "spirit" was complex involving really three spirits: the ka, ba, and akh. The ka, a "double" of the person, would remain in the tomb and needed the offerings and objects there. The ba, or "soul", was free to fly out of the tomb and return to it. And it was the akh, perhaps translated as "spirit", which had to travel through the Underworld to the Final Judgment and entrance to the Afterlife. To the Egyptian, all three were essential.

Who Was Mummified

After death, the pharaohs of Egypt usually were mummified and buried in elaborate tombs. Members of the nobility and officials also often received the same treatment, and occasionally, common people. However, the process was an expensive one, beyond the means of many.

For religious reasons, some animals were also mummified. The sacred bulls from the early dynasties had their own cemetery at Sakkara. Baboons, cats, birds, and crocodiles, which also had great religious significance, were sometimes mummified, especially in the later dynasties.

The Study of Mummies Today

Ancient writers, modern scientists, and the mummies themselves all help us better understand the Egyptian mummification process and the culture in which it existed. Much of what we know about the actual process is based on the writings of early historians such as Herodotus who carefully recorded the process during his travels to Egypt around 450 BCE. Present-day archaeologists and other specialists are adding to this knowledge. The development of x-rays now makes it possible to x-ray mummies without destroying the elaborate outer wrappings. By studying the x-rays or performing autopsies on unwrapped bodies, experts are learning more about diseases suffered by the Egyptians and their medical treatment. A better idea of average height and life span comes from studying the bones. By learning their age at death, the order and dates of the Egyptian kings becomes a little clearer. Even ties of kinship in the royal line can be suggested by the striking similarities or dissimilarities in the skulls of pharaohs that followed one another. Dead now for thousands of years, the mummy continues to speak to us.

Still, now she helps me a lot to do my homework. I think she is the first teacher in my life and her teaching has taught so many important things.

After coming back from school, cook food again, and feed us. I think she is the best cook ever. She makes really delicious food. My mother is my biggest supporter. Whatever I do, she inspires and stands behind me as a guide. In my last science project, she helped me most and I came first in the competition. When I get succeed anything, she is the happiest person in that time.  

How Much She Loves Me: There is no limitation or I can’t measure the love of her for me. I know she loves me most and I also love her really too much. Home is called ‘HOME’ because of her only. She is my best friend and guide. She teaches me how to survive in the world.

She is the one who never gets tired loving us more and more. Love of a mother is different, unique and it’s not possible to replace by any other person. We won’t find any love in the entire world that can be compared with the love of a mother.  

Mother as a Guide: She has a crucial role in my life as a guide. Whatever I do, she guides me on the right path. Sometimes, we make mistakes and they show us the right thing as guardian. She is the one who brings us on light and removes all darkness from life.

Mother as a Teacher: Mothers are always the first teacher of everyone life. In my life, she was the first one who taught me speaking, walking and knowing the letters. I can’t remember the days but can realize that she is an incredible woman. She taught me the first poem in my life. Still, now she is an amazing teacher in my life. She always assists me to do my homework. And sometimes she helps me with my projects.

Ancient Egyptian Mummies: Their Contribution to the 21st Century

The preserved bodies of ancient Egyptians hold a widespread fascination for scholars, medical practitioners, and members of the public who visit Egyptology collections in public museums. However, over the centuries, mummies have been put to some very practical uses. From medieval times, Arab and European doctors used pulverised mummy tissue as a highly regarded medicinal ingredient – in the words of the philosopher, Sir Thomas Browne, “Mummy is become merchandise, Mizraim cures wounds, and Pharaoh is sold for balsam.” More recently, in his book Innocents Abroad , Mark Twain referred to the use of these highly combustible, resin-coated bodies as an effective fuel supply for Egyptian railways.

Today, Egyptian mummies provide a unique, although challenging, resource for examining the occurrence and patterns of disease, as well as methods of treatment, in an ancient society. They have been accurately described as “a museum of disease”, since the evidence of many medical conditions remains, embedded in the skeleton, teeth and body tissues, awaiting identification. This has become possible over the past century, when forensic experts have been able to examine mummy collections with a range of scientific techniques adapted from diagnostic methods developed for living patients.

As well as adding to our knowledge of an ancient civilisation, biomedical studies can provide information about the historical context of many illnesses and medical conditions found in the modern world. Some of these comparative results are unsurprising – for example, as might be expected, there is a marked prevalence of parasitic diseases in both ancient and modern Egypt. However, other findings, such as the incidence in ancient Egypt of so-called ‘modern’ diseases such as atherosclerosis and cancer, and the evidence that at least some of the ancient pharmaceutical treatments were apparently effective for other conditions, have provoked lively discussion.

Since the Renaissance, antiquarian collectors transported mummies from Egypt to enhance the collections of museums, learned societies, and private individuals in Europe, Britain, and later the United States of America. From the sixteenth century onwards, some of these mummies were unwrapped (‘unrolled’) in front of invited audiences. Most of these occasions were frivolous social events, with no serious scientific objectives, and any useful information that might have been forthcoming was lost. However, during the 19 th and early 20 th centuries, there were several serious researchers who unwrapped and autopsied a number of mummies, and recorded their work in detailed publications. This marked the start of ‘palaeopathology’ (the scientific study of disease preserved in ancient human remains) as a distinct academic discipline.

A new wave of interest in this type of research emerged in the 1970s, when the Manchester Egyptian Mummy Research Project (which I initiated in 1973) became a pioneer in this field. Over the past forty years, I have continued to lead this interdisciplinary team of specialists, drawn at first from the university and associated teaching hospitals. The primary aims of the project have been to establish a methodology for examining mummies, utilising techniques and specialist equipment that could be employed under near ideal conditions; and through this methodology, to gain as much information as possible about disease, diet, living conditions, the mummification process, and the religious and funerary customs of the ancient Egyptians. Other researchers have been able to adopt and adapt many of the approaches established by the ‘Manchester Method’, as the basis for their own studies in this field.

Being editor of Egyptian Mummies and Modern Science (2008) has given me the opportunity to bring together the story of Manchester’s continuing research programme over the past forty years. Chapters written by team members – pioneers of many advances in this field – describe how techniques including radiology, computed tomography (CT), histology, endoscopy, dental studies, facial reconstruction, immunology, and ancient DNA identification have been developed and used to investigate diet, disease and death in ancient Egypt. Other contributions deal with methods of treating disease in ancient Egypt – the medical and pharmaceutical systems, and the use of intoxicants. There is also a discussion of ways in which mummies – a fragile and finite resource – can be preserved and made available for future studies: these include conservation treatments, and the establishment at Manchester of the International Ancient Egyptian Mummy Tissue Bank .  A final chapter discusses the future of “biomedical Egyptology” and the desirability of establishing university facilities, such as the KNH Centre for Biomedical Egyptology at the University of Manchester, where research and teaching in this cross-disciplinary specialisation can be promoted and developed.

Whatever I am today is solely due to my mother’s presence in my life, as she was present for both my successes and failures. Of all the unique and invaluable treasures one can ever get in their life, maternal love is probably the most precious gift we’re granted at birth. People say that a mother’s love is all-forgiving and unconditional, persisting despite any circumstances and troubles. Only a mother can love you the way you are without voicing terms or considering your strong and weak sides. That’s the kinship we all cherish throughout our lives, even if we are separated by miles and time zones.

Looking back at my relationship with my mother, I can say that I have felt the heartiness and warmth of that relationship to the very depth since the times I remember myself. Mother has always been beside me, cheering up or comforting me when I needed it the most. She became my boon of hope, wisdom, and forgiveness, to which I resorted at all times and that became the unending resource of love and energy for me.

Returning to that hot summer of 2002 in my thoughts, I can recollect every single detail of that significant day that changed my mindset and taught me the life wisdom of maternal love. I woke up very early, welcoming the first sun rays in my bedroom and anticipating the joy of that remarkable day – my mother’s birthday. I had been waiting for that holiday for many weeks, thinking of how I could make it unforgettable for the most special woman in my life. I was so overwhelmed by the feeling of that day’s significance, knowing that I should do something special and make her happy. So, as I was standing in the middle of my bedroom, determined the create the best day in my mother’s life, I was already figuring out the strategy for making that happen.

My initial plan was to collect all the money I had saved for the past few months and rush to a local store to buy her that special gift. Though I had a scarce idea of what that gift should be, I knew for sure that it was something special. I also understood that I would easily figure that out once I saw that special thing on one of the mall’s shelves. So, I grabbed all the coins neatly collected in my ceramic pig and set out on the early morning trip to the local store. I was absolutely fascinated and thrilled by the upcoming purchase, already imagining the happy smile on my mother’s face and the sense of gratitude she would radiate.

Was I an ideal child? Definitely not, as we had some quarrels and arguments along the way. Could that spoil our relationships? Not at all, as my mother and I always felt that intricate bond that no temporary quarrel could ruin. Our love and appreciation for one another were rock-solid, and we had warm feelings and support towards each other even when we were far away, with my mother doing her chores to make our home cozy and inviting, and me spending time at classes to make her proud of my progress. I have always been committed to my mother, and the birthday gift I was planning to select was another symbol of that commitment.

I was walking along the street with those inspiring, cheerful thoughts in my mind, and the first stop I arrived at was the local store we often visited together. My mother liked to do the shopping there, but it was a regular local store with nothing special that could be suitable for such a grand holiday as my mother’s birthday. Even if there was a present that could be pleasing enough for my mother, I suddenly realized that, to my horror and bitter disappointment, the sum I had accumulated was not enough to buy even an insignificant trifle in that store, let alone something impressive. So, I felt deeply disenchanted and left the store with gloomy thoughts, determined to find something worthy in another store.

I did not want to give up and attended several other stores in our neighborhood, small and large, in an effort to find something suitable for my mother’s birthday. I had been cherishing a truly ceremonial image for congratulating my mother with a special gift she deserved, so the process of searching for that gift was complicated by my over-exaggerated expectations about it. Even after deciding to be more flexible and less demanding, I could not find anything suitable for the occasion or fitting my budget, which was killing me and my enthusiasm. I even started panicking a bit as I realized that I had wasted over an hour wandering in the nearby shops. My mother could already be up, not knowing where I was and remaining without a birthday present.

Those dark thoughts led me to a small roadside shop that created a strong impression of not having anything suitable for my purposes. However, I still decided to give it a chance because I was in despair about finding a worthy gift for my mother, and I probably came in to get some inspiration or ideas for that venture. The person at the checkout probably felt the same that I felt, knowing that I was not the typical kind of their store’s client. Nevertheless, he performed the standard greeting and asked me whether they could help. I had nothing to answer, so I answered the truth – that I was looking for a birthday present for my mother and could not find anything fitting my budget and my initial idea of a gift worth her appreciation. The cashier was genuinely surprised to hear that speech on my part, and his only answer was that the best gift to my mother could be love.

I was totally taken aback by this response, as it seemed so genius and so perplexing at the same time. What could my sincere expression of love look like? What could I present to my mother as a reflection of my warm and sincere feelings towards her? I was clueless as I was walking home, but then a thought struck me – I could cook a meal for her! She did that so many times for me, and I was always grateful for the care and attention she invested in feeding me with tasty and nutritious meals every day. So, why could I not treat her to a delicious meal on her birthday?

The idea of cooking a meal was so exciting that I rushed into the kitchen to get everything ready. Suddenly, I heard my mother walking down the stairs. I turned the panic mode again, as I had little time to figure out a delicious meal; I had no time even for pancakes, which I knew my mother loved so much. What could I cook within a couple of minutes of my mother’s routine walk around the house, a visit to the yard where her favorite roses were in bloom, and her return to the kitchen for her well-deserved morning cup of coffee?

The thought struck me – I could manage to prepare the instant noodles! I had no idea how my mother would react to them, but that was the only meal I had the time for. So, I hurried up to turn on the kettle and took out the pack of noodles we had for the rainy day of oversleeping and having no time for a normal breakfast. I threw a couple of veggies into the bowl of noodles so that they looked not that depressive and poured that masterpiece with boiling water. All I had to do after closing the meal with a cap was to pray.

The next morning, my mother entered the kitchen. I turned that bright smile on my face and chanted the “Happy Birthday to you” song, handing that bowl of noodles to her. My mother stopped in the middle of the kitchen in silence, and one moment later, I noticed the tears in her eyes. Worried about whether I had done something wrong, I asked her, “Are you okay?” The answer stays with me in my memories – she said, “This is the best birthday in my life, darling.” She gratefully ate those noodles as we were sitting in the kitchen, drinking her coffee afterwards and saying “thank you” a dozen more times. Though I knew those noodles weren’t the best-in-class restaurant meal, I felt the sincere gratitude and love of my mother and carried those feelings throughout my life.

Though over a decade passed since that day, I recollect those warm feelings every day as I leave home, look at my reflection in the kitchen window, and see my mother and me sitting at the table and eating noodles. After that, I take my phone and make that call, to tell my mother how I love her and keep all those warm memories in my heart.

Introduction

Mummies are one of the most appealing subjects within the field of archaeological science, not only to the general public but also to academics. Due to their unique preservation status, mummies can provide specialist avenues to historical and scientific knowledge of the past that cannot be obtained by other research methods. Thanks to the interdisciplinary work carried out by teams of scholars representing a great variety of research fields, mummies have provided us with unique opportunities to better understand the peoples and societies of ancient and later times (Cockburn et al. 1998 ).

Mummies are human (or animal) remains displaying preserved non-bony tissues. The term mummy is a derivation from the Old Persian word, mumeia , or mum , meaning bitumen or pitch (Lynnerup 2007 ). We call them mummies when a reasonable amount of soft tissue is preserved to an extent that the skin and/or hair, muscles, ligaments, tendons, or even internal organs can be observed...
