Learning Objectives:
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: 1. Identify and describe the main functions of a business. 2. Understand the characteristics of each business function. 3. Explain the interdependence of business functions. 4. Apply knowledge of business functions to real-world examples.
Vocabulary:
- Production – The process of creating goods and services.
- Marketing – Promoting and selling products or services, including market research and advertising.
- Finance – Managing money matters including budgeting, saving, investing, and forecasting.
- Human Resources – The function dealing with the staff or employees of a business.
- Operations – Day-to-day activities required for the business to function efficiently.
Previous Learning:
Students have previously learned about different types of businesses and their roles in the economy. They have also been introduced to basic business terminologies and concepts.

Beginning Activities (10% – 6 minutes):

In this lesson we will only look at 3 functions of a business namely the financial function, the marketing function and human resource function however please do remember that there are 8 function in a business we will cover the rest of the functions in the following lesson.

Natural Herbs and Spices an established factory in Cape Town has 8 Different business functions to ensure the success of the business. However you know Emma, Garth and Dave who works at Natural Herbs and Spices. Emma works in the Human Resource Department, Garth works in the financial department and Dave works in the Marketing department.
- Describe in detail the roles and responsibilities that Emma, Garth and Dave has in their respective departments. [12]
2. Discuss how each of these departments can contribute to the success of the business. [6]
3. What department looks at advertising and sales promotion. [2]

I chose to divide functions of a business in three lesson so that learners can grasp all 8 functions better. This method allows learners to focus on each function more instead of having to study all 8 at once.
This particular assignment is primarily for learners to understand how the Marketing, financial and human resource function works in a business and also to see whether they understand that their are various departments that contribute to the success of running a business.
